F E AT URED ARTIST | Eileen Dorsey Eileen Dorsey is a Cleveland native who graduated from Kent State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Art in 2006. Since earning her BFA, Dorsey has shown her work in several regional galleries and museums, and examples of her paintings can be found in many public and private collections. Her newest work focuses on the landscape that surrounds her, painted with vibrant color palettes and robust surfaces. Dorsey approaches each canvas with an aggressive, yet subtle sensibility – her tool of choice is the palette knife, and with it, she makes sharp decisions as she slathers, scrapes, and tosses paint across the surface of the canvas.

F E AT URED ARTIST | Mark Thomas After receiving a BFA in painting from Kent State University, Mark Thomas moved to Cleveland, Ohio, and was immediately attracted to the decayed and industrial areas of the city. Drawn to the textures found on the oxidized metal surfaces covering the city’s bridges and abandoned structures, Thomas combed the rusty underbelly of the metropolis for inspiration. He began to experiment with automotive enamel and other industrial pigments – laying the paint down in thick layers, then stripping it back by applying a belt sander directly to the surface of the canvas, often leaving imperfections and holes in the process. Over time, he gathered the skills necessary to create these laborious compositions, while still enjoying the inevitable element of chance that informed each piece. His Ballast series is a direct reaction to the urban landscape – tough, man-made, gritty, with bursts of vibrant color, and hints of America’s industrial past.

F E AT URED ARTIST | Bruce Checefsky Bruce Checefsky is an award-winning photographer and independent filmmaker – his photographs and films can be found in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art NYC and many other notable institutions. To achieve his remarkable photographs, Checefsky devised a unique system of recording flowers and plants from his garden with a photo-scanner mounted to a tripod, then connected to a laptop computer, all of which he actually takes outside in his yard to use. Each scanned image is a detailed, one-of-a-kind rendering of the sophisticated forms and textures found in nature.

Understanding Specialty Effects Our state-of-the-art equipment and advanced printing techniques allow us to embellish both Level and Non-Level designs with a variety of specialty effects. These effects are excellent for use in “protected” areas, such as behind a headboard or other furniture, and they are the most noticeable and effective when properly lit by strong, directional lighting. Effects can be used alone or in combination with others to create a variety of stunning effects. Designs that feature specialty effects are also available without these effects. WALLFX® Level’s proprietary printed emboss effect which allows select areas of a design to be raised and appear embossed. Designs featuring this effect are indicated by . Spot Gloss A special ink formulation that allows for select areas of a design to be coated with a glossy finish. Designs featuring this effect are indicated by . Metallic True, reflective metallic effects, achieved through a combination of inks and materials. Designs featuring this effect are indicated by . Some Metallic effects necessitate the additional use of white ink to achieve a “blockout” effect, in which only selected areas appear metallic (as opposed to an overall metallic look). | How to Order
A Step-By-Step Guide to Specifying Level
1
SELECT A DESIGN & COLOR The designs in the Level program are available in a range of colorations and many feature several layout variations. Each of these designs can be specified as is, or may be customized to better suit your needs. Design Samples of all standard colorways are available to assist you in your selection. In addition to demonstrating actual color and scale, these samples explain the various types of customizations available for the design. We recommend requesting a Design Sample prior to finalizing any custom options.

CHOOSE CUSTOM OPTIONS A key feature of the Level program is the ability to tailor the designs to your needs. There are a variety of ways in which our designs can be customized, and your sales representative can assist you with these choices. Basic Customization Basic Customizations are scaling, sizing, and cropping a design to your specifications. Advanced Customization This includes adapting a design to be a repeating pattern, custom overlaying or combining artwork, fitting artwork to a complex space where very specific tolerances are required, changing the text of a word wall, and any other adaptations to Level designs. Advanced Customizations also include adapting a Level design for use on window film (as shown throughout this book), printing with white ink on any material, and creating custom WallFXÂŽ (raised embosses). Custom Coloration The colors within Level designs can be changed to your specifications, though the intricacies of some designs can affect the way custom colors appear when printed. When customizing colors, our Color Book is strongly recommended and more accurate than other color references such as paint swatches, though both are acceptable.

DETERMINE SIZE & SCALE All Level designs, customized or not, are sized to customer specifications. In many cases you will simply need to know the overall height and length/ width of your space, and your selected design will be sized accordingly. If you have a complex installation that requires multiple sizes or custom fitting to intricate spaces, please have as much information as possible ready when you call for your quote.

SELECT A SUBSTRATE One of the great features of digital printing is the ability to produce your image on a wide variety of substrates, from vinyls to clear films to rigid materials and more. Feeling overwhelmed? After two decades of experience, we recommend specifying one of these standard substrates: Type II 20 oz. Vinyl (Smooth, Stipple Embossed, & Silver Smooth) Optically Clear Polyester Window Film Type II Carta Smooth PVC-Free Premium Contract Wallcovering These are our most often specified and popular materials (making up roughly 90% of our production). They are competitively priced, have been thoroughly tested, and we keep them in inventory to help you meet tight deadlines. We can of course digitally print on hundreds of other materials, so if your job calls for a specific material, don’t hesitate to ask. We have state-of-the-art print equipment and can print on just about anything that our competition can. However, it is important to remember that printing on specialty materials nearly always involves a longer lead time, potential R&D, and more up front expense than the popular materials above.

We are able to print your design on an ever-growing list of materials including Type II vinyls, PVC-free commercial wallcovering, window films, laminates, rigid materials, and more. Many of our materials feature environmentally friendly attributes, and we continually expand our offering of substrate materials to keep up with the demands of the market and provide new options for designers and specifiers. We also offer WallMax, our optional liquid laminate top-coat that provides additional durability and abrasion-resistance, and gives the printed surface of your mural a true Type II specification.

Level Proofing Tools Explained While digital print technology allows for unparalleled design freedom, its print-on-demand nature necessitates some unique sampling and proofing solutions. Our goal is to provide the most accurate, beneficial, and cost effective tools possible to help you visualize the final product at various stages of development. We have created an assortment of proofing devices, each targeted at demonstrating a specific task or specification. Depending on the complexity and level of customization associated with your project, you may receive one or more of these during the course of production. A digital PDF of your artwork in an elevation view (or superimposed over an architectural elevation upon request). The intent of this mockup is to demonstrate how a requested design will appear when sized, cropped, scaled, and/or customized to your specifications. V I NYL SAMPLE
This 17.5” x 24” sample features both a large detail crop and full thumbnail of a standard Level design. It is typically printed on Type II Stipple Vinyl, except when an upgrade materials (such as Silver Smooth) is the design’s standard material. The sample also contains swatches of the colors within the design as well as information regarding the design’s scalability, pattern repeat, and color style (tonal or solid). Design Samples can serve as your Strike-Off when specifying a standard Level design with no custom colors, when the scale of the final design is close to that of the sample scale, and when the material and presence of WallMax laminate match that of the sample. A small swatch of substrate material, including its basic specifications, is available for all standard substrates and many specialty substrates. These samples are available printed or unprinted. COLOR BOOK
A set of approximately 1,200 color swatches printed on our Type II Stipple Vinyl. When specifying custom colors, the Color Book is strongly recommended and more accurate than other color references such as paint swatches*. S T RIKE-OFF
The Strike-Off is your final sign-off prior to production. It is printed on your specified substrate and features a crop of the final artwork, demonstrating its actual production size, scale, color, material, and layout. 36” x 52”. Strike-Off approval is required prior to printing to ensure your satisfaction. *Due to differences between paint and print technology and the paper of paint swatches and our vinyl, our Color Book is the most accurate method of selecting your custom color.
