Step Inside Elford Mill
A large elegant drawing room with wood beams and wood burning stove in large brick inglenook fireplace is a great entertaining space yet exudes a warm cosiness and provides a perfect place to relax. The library/study is an inviting and cosy space.
I really couldn’t choose one particular favourite room,” says Jane. “We use the whole house and each of the rooms has it’s own unique character and charm.

The garden room is a very pretty, light filled room with a wall of French windows opening onto the garden and terrace. A feature exposed brick wall brings character and texture to the room and helps to bring the outside in. A feature wood burning stove adds yet more character and gives the option for cosy nights in while being able to take full advantage of the glorious sunsets. The kitchen is at the heart of this lovely family home, and has a range of cream units flanked with black granite worktops, Belfast sink, integrated dishwasher, fridge freezer and washer/dryer. Exposed beams and a stable door all add to the period charm of the home with an oil fired, four oven Aga taking centre stage. There is space for a dining table and casual seating in which to relax and enjoy some quiet time. The kitchen also benefits from underfloor heating and together with the heat from the Aga, creates a very warm and inviting room. The Stoop, off the kitchen, is a casual light room with windows all around. Accessing the garden terrace, this a great place to enjoy casual dining with friends or relax with a G&T and enjoy glorious views of the gardens and surrounding countryside. There is a small ante room next to the kitchen, which the current owners use as a bar with fridge and sink.

Seller Insight We moved to Elford Mill in 1996, but it has only been a private residence for around 28 years,” says Jane. “It was dowered to businessman and novelist Robert Bage on his marriage, but although a miller by trade he gambled with the gentry and lost the property in 1773 to the Earl of Donegal after betting on a horse race. He went on to rent it for the rest of his life, and interestingly it’s where he wrote a number of books, including his most famous, Hermsprong.” “This house has definitely served us well as a growing family. We had two great weddings here, one a very English country garden tea party, and another for which we erected a huge marquee on the top field; the garden provided the most splendid backdrop. We love to entertain, this has been the perfect party house, and as such it has enabled us to host countless large gatherings, including some truly memorable Christmases. However when it’s just for the two of us here we don’t ‘rattle around’ as people often say they do in large properties, and I think that is because this house is so unique.” “During our time here we have landscaped the gardens, and they include a beautiful walled vegetable garden and a bird garden that enjoys lots of activity. The swimming pool was already here when we moved in and it’s been a wonderful feature. We have enjoyed swimming every summer, generally May to October, and hosted many pool parties.” “Because we’re surrounded by countryside we get magnificent panoramic sunsets that fill the sky – they are much photographed and admired – and with little light pollution the stars at night are sight to see. During August you can, and we do, lie on a sun bed late in to the evenings and count shooting stars. The village, which is very active, is just a few minutes walk away, which means we can be as involved as we wish to be,” says Jane. “And as the mill is set well back from the road, although convenient for travel, the setting means Elford Mill remains quiet” “We are leaving because of the pull of grandchildren,” says Jane. “We want to move closer to them and enjoy them whilst they are still young. I’ve no doubt it will be in somewhere quite different though, as it would be far too difficult to emulate Elford Mill, but we have had 21 lovely years here and we wish others to have the same.” These comments are the personal views of the current owner and are included as an insight into life at the property. They have not been independently verified, should not be relied on without verification and do not necessarily reflect the views of the agent.

On the first floor is an inner vestibule leading to the dining room, a spectacular room with vaulted ceiling, exposed beams and beautiful windows and balcony overlooking the delightful countryside. Large open fireplace with wooden surround and spiral staircase leading down to the kitchen. This room would make a very grand bedroom or could also be used as a sitting room, to take advantage of the stunning views and sunsets. A spacious master bedroom suite with elegant duck egg walls adding to the feeling of grandeur and large walk in wardrobe. Ensuite bathroom with period style free standing sink, bath with shower. Completing the first floor accommodation is a sunny double guest bedroom and a large family bathroom. On the second floor is a pretty double room with vaulted ceiling, views over open countryside and quirky door access to ground floor. There is a further double bedroom with built in storage cupboard and beamed arch to ante room, perfect for dressing area or nursery. A smaller bedroom and family bathroom complete the second floor. Open stairs lead to a mezzanine floor currently used as a games room but offering a host of possibilities. We have two daughters who were very keen members of South Staffs Pony Club and just about lived at a livery yard, so one of our motivations for moving here was that we had the space to build stables and a garage – above which we created a self-contained apartment. We were able to have years of ‘horses at home’, it was lovely!

A detached double garage block is topped by a delightful self-contained one bedroom apartment, fitted to a high standard and comprising a small kitchen, sitting area, bedroom with a free standing bath in corner of room and a separate toilet. This is perfect to use as an annex for a family member or as a separate office space. Equally it would make an excellent holiday let for additional income. A separate gated parking area, not visible from the house, provides parking for additional cars or larger vehicles. There are three modern stables and paddocks and various small store rooms.
