Mongeham Lodge
Northbourne Road | Great Mongeham | Deal | CT14

Step inside Mongeham Lodge

Built around the very end of the Georgian era, this superb detached five bedroom residence is full of wonderful period features that give it such a special character, but without the onus of being Grade II Listed. The property backs onto farmland, providing stunning rural views and a quiet and peaceful environment, nestling in the midst of 0.6225 of an acre of picturesque grounds in Great Mongeham. It is not far from Deal, Dover and Sandwich with easy access to excellent primary, grammar and private schools so is ideal for families. There is a pedestrian entrance from Northbourne Road and vehicular access via a private driveway leading up to a wood clad double carport and the entrance gate, which opens onto a wide gravelled parking area in front of modern detached wood framed carriage house style garage and car barn.

With its chimneys, ornate ridge tiles, cathedral style dormers with finials, varied roof lines, barge boards, multi-pane sash windows, pitched roof entrance door and a well-established wisteria covered front veranda the house has immediate external appeal. While internally the high coved ceilings, panelled doors, picture rails and high skirtings, fireplaces, staircase and original window shutters create memories of a bygone era of elegance. At the same time the property has been sensitively updated to incorporate everything needed for modern day living.

There is a spacious and welcoming entrance hall leading to an inner hallway with access to the ground floor living accommodation as well as to the utility room, cloakroom and the original staircase. The attractive sitting room includes two sets of original French doors with one that opens into a charming sun room where you can sit and admire the views across the front garden and the other opens onto the veranda, while an impressive marble fire surround and mantlepiece, with an ornate cast iron fireplace and coal effect gas fire, provides a charming focal point. You can happily entertain a number of guests in the large light and bright elegant dining room that also has two pairs of original French doors to the veranda, wood flooring and a black surround fireplace and mantlepiece with a large log burning stove.

A door from the dining room opens into the spacious triple aspect kitchen/breakfast room with its tiled flooring, central beam, inset range cooker and shaker style units housing a built in microwave and integrated fridge freezer and dishwasher together with a very useful understairs storage cupboard. From the kitchen there is access to the rear lobby that has an external back door, a door to the secondary staircase and a door to the charming study with its wood flooring, built in cupboards and shelving and where you can sit at your desk and enjoy the views across the rear garden.

The main staircase leads to a galleried landing providing far reaching views to Northbourne and has access to the large family with a bath and separate shower as well as three double bedrooms. These all have delightful views over farmland and even as far as Deal and round to Sandwich Bay including one with an original fireplace, another that has door access to the secondary staircase but this can be locked and the dual aspect main bedroom with a fitted cupboard and an en suite shower room with a vanity basin. Two further double bedrooms are accessed via the secondary staircase including one with an en suite bathroom, a fitted cupboard and an original fireplace. This area could be ideal for adult children or teenagers wanting a bit of independence as they can walk into the house through the back door and straight up the stairs.

The front garden includes sweeping lawns down to the road as well as steps and four impressive specimen trees with preservation orders including a beautiful sweet chestnut, two beech trees and a holm oak. There is a crazy paved path from the pedestrian entrance to the front door flanked by high hedging and shrub borders that continues round to the rear of the property where you will find a terrace for al fresco dining. This is edged by a raised lawn edged with a dwarf wall and a path leading to a large garden storage shed and a charming pond.

Seller Insight

We have lived here since 1998 and it has been truly wonderful home in which to bring up our children. However they have long since flown the nest so it is time for us to downsize and let another family enjoy everything the property has to offer. We have enjoyed updating and maintaining the house over the years including having a new roof of Spanish slate installed about three years ago. It is a great home for entertaining both indoors and outside and there is plenty of space for kids to kick a ball around or play hide and seek among the trees and we can just stroll into the adjacent fields and walk to Northbourne or Betteshanger.

Great Mongeham includes a good primary school while nearby Northbourne has the excellent private prep school, Northbourne Park. Sholden is only about a mile away with its convenience store, primary school and village hall with various activities as well as a pub, a farm shop and is on a bus route. It is only about a couple of miles to Walmer station where the high speed trains to St Pancras takes an hour and 20 minutes, while the lovely seaside town of Deal includes trendy shops, restaurants, bars and seafront as well as golf courses and the Tides leisure complex.

The medieval Cinque port town of Sandwich is not far and also includes excellent eateries, entertainment facilities and shops as well as championship golf courses and the Sir Roger Manwood grammar school while other excellent grammar and private schools can be found in Dover, Canterbury, Folkestone and Thanet. There is easy access to Dover and the Channel Tunnel for the Continent.”*
