Oakwood House is a lovely 3-4-bedroom character residence situated in the village of Brocton which is within easy reach to the county town of Stafford. Situated with direct access to Cannock Chase the accommodation includes 3 receptions and 3 bathrooms. The gardens are child friendly and private. In summary an ideal family home in a idyllic location.
On entering Oakwood House you really appreciate the spacious reception hall and its traditional features. Even though this property dates to the 1930’s much of the styling was taken from Beaudesert Hall when the property was being demolished and was the property of The Marquis of Anglesey (Paget family), whose family had permanently moved to their “seat” in Anglesey, Plas Newydd. So, there are features in Oakwood House which came from Beaudesert Hall where the original builder included such as large oak beams and 400-year-old oak panelling, all of which contribute to the unique character of the home. There have also been some new additions to the ground floor with a relaxing sunroom which overlooks the front garden via the floor to ceiling windows. The downstairs wet room off the reception hall and the dining room ideally suits itself as an en-suite to a downstairs bedroom if required. The former kitchen has now been replaced as a breakfast area off the now existing kitchen as well as having a separate utility/laundry room. The main reception room is spacious and extensive in size with some lovely character features with the fireplace being the focal point of the room as well as views overlooking the rear gardens to enjoy. There is also a secondary staircase from the boot room to the first floor as well as an internal door to the garage.
When we visited the property for the first time, the house felt very welcoming and warm with a lot of character,” say the current owners of Oakwood House. “The property was built in the early 1930s by a builder for their own occupation, so is structurally very sound and beautifully finished. At the time, the builder was demolishing Beaudesert Hall, which was the property of The Marquis of Anglesey (Paget family), whose family had permanently moved to their “seat” in Anglesey, Plas Newydd. So, there are features in Oakwood House which came from Beaudesert Hall, such as large oak beams and 400-year-old oak panelling, all of which contribute to the unique character of the home. Our favourite room is the Lounge with its panelling, fireplace and stained glass/leaded-light window complete with the Paget family crest. The sheer amount of space there is, both inside and out, makes the property ideal for entertaining and having visitors, too.”
Since moving in, the owners have made various improvements to the property. “We removed one bedroom (which can easily be re-instated) to make a galleried landing,” they say, “as well as removing the old kitchen (which is now what I call the Breakfast Room) and making the scullery into a new kitchen. We also added a Laundry Room at the back of the rear hall; built a Conservatory/Sun Room; installed new bathrooms and refurbished the existing ones; and converted an open area above the garage into a closed office space. All windows are now double glazed, as are the outside doors. Outside, a good part of the garden was overgrown with brambles, which we cleared to expose a stream bed at the bottom. We subsequently made a feature of this.”
Indeed, the generous part-tiered gardens now serve as an extension of the indoor living accommodation during the warmer months of the year. “A patio sweeps around the whole house so we can follow the sun throughout the day,” say the owners, “making this the ideal property for al fresco dining and outdoor entertaining. The grassy slope with the stream makes this a very tranquil place to be. Further, the property is positioned on a track which is part of Cannock Chase and is a no-through road, contributing to the sense of peace and quiet.”
The local area has much to recommend it, too. “In the village we have a small church, a Post Office, a Village Hall which has a Play Group, W.I., Mothers Union and Yoga Classes, and a Golf Club (Brocton Hall) which is open to everyone and has good dining facilities,” say the owners. “There are at least three good junior schools within one and a half miles. There are two supermarkets, a doctors surgery, butchers, hairdressers, pubs, a café and a good High School (Walton) about a mile away.”*

The first floor like the ground floor has been altered and changed from originally a 4 bedroom to a 3 by the current owners and as a result a spacious galleried landing offers a feeling of space with access to a balcony over the gardens. The master bedroom is spacious light and airy and has its own modern ensuite with the 2 further double bedrooms complimented by the modern family bathroom. There is a further room off the secondary staircase from the boot room which could be utilised as a further bedroom or office.
The Gardens that surround the property are mainly laid to lawn with patio areas interspersed with mature shrubs and a stream to the bottom of the garden. The house sits in the centre of the plot and is private and child friendly. There is ample parking to the front of the double garage for numerous vehicles with access via a driveway and 5 bar gate.
