Yorkshire is where you go for a warm welcome, sprawling views and red brick pubs with roaring fires. But you stay for a cracking plate of food.

Yorkshire has more than its fair share of quality food and drink. Enough for us to write an entire supplement about it, and then some.

It’s nothing new, either: some of the country’s most celebrated foods come from Yorkshire. We look to it for hearty pies and cakes and puddings, artisan cheese and (let’s face it) anything to do with rhubarb.

That said, most readers will know that there’s much more to Yorkshire’s culinary landscape.

The quality of the produce grown here is outstanding. Products made with Yorkshire ingredients don’t just appeal because the idea of eating locally is romantic.

Yorkshire’s food scene is borne of centuries' old agricultural history, a diversity of local ingredients and a commitment to quality. It has both fertile farmland and a coastline, allowing it to produce high-quality meat, dairy and seafood.

As a region, Yorkshire shows time and time again the value of having a proper craft, through a network of farmers, artisan producers and top notch chefs.

Yorkshire is where you go for a warm welcome, sprawling views and red brick pubs with roaring fires. But you stay for a cracking plate of food. The

people of Yorkshire care about sustainability, and community-driven markets. All of this is the perfect canvas for a vibrant food & drink scene.

Not only that, but it has come on leaps and bounds in recent years, blending its traditional grounding with modern techniques and tastes – artisan bakers, brewers and charcutiers are everywhere these days. This is a vibrant, eclectic region where you’re just as likely to find excellent ice cream as you are a tremendous hot sauce.

There’s a reason why people visit Yorkshire, and why people across the UK seek out food & drink from Yorkshire. We’ve put together a supplement showcasing a handful of its producers, with the hope that after reading it, you will too extol its virtues – if you don’t already.

We’ve covered the four regions, from West (p.6) to East (p.11) and North (p.12) to South (p.17).

We’ve included a round-up of the Deliciously Yorkshire Awards (p.19), whose entire reason to exist is to shine a light on the best food & drink professionals in the area.

Retailers and the kind folk at Deliciously Yorkshire, who know the producers of Yorkshire better than anyone, have also shared their thoughts on the current state of food & drink here (p.5).

Yorkshire Bounty

Yorkshire’s food & drink industry has a historical farming heritage, diverse landscapes and a drive to move with the times. It defines itself by a strong sense of pride and collaboration among producers, retailers, and communities.

Whether or not food & drink from Yorkshire has a unique quality, one thing is certain: the people behind it firmly believe it does. And perhaps that’s part of what makes it special.

Allison Kane has been the business development manager at Deliciously Yorkshire – a not-for-profit members’ organisation and awards scheme set up in the 1980s to support and promote the region’s food and drink industry – for the past eight years. As Kane sees it, Yorkshire has it all:

“It’s so bountiful. We’ve got the Dales and the Moors and the coastline and everything in between. The variety of landscapes and soil really does define the county, and means we can produce everything from meat and cheese to beer and spirits.”

“And there’s such heart in this county, the love of food & drink and its provenance.”

This view aligns with how Katie Taylor of Drewton’s Farm Shop – and seemingly everyone in the industry – describes it. “Yorkshire is a treasure trove of culinary delights,” she says.

“We take immense pride in promoting the incredible talents and flavours that Yorkshire has to offer.”

The region’s long-standing traditions of farming, food & drink production, and independent retail have shaped Yorkshire’s local food culture, some of it known across the country and beyond: there’s the famed Parkin, Yorkshire Forced Rhubarb, Wensleydale

cheese and Yorkshire Dales lamb. At a local scale, there are fresh food markets, nose-totail restaurants and independent shops.

But for Vanessa Pitt, general manager at Fodder in Harrogate, the farm shop’s success – founded by The Yorkshire Agricultural Society to support farmers after the 2001

We

take immense pride in promoting the incredible talents and avours that Yorkshire has to o er.

foot and mouth outbreak – stems from the relationships it has built and nurtured over the past 24 years. “So many of [our suppliers] are family-run businesses, handed down through generations, as well as traditional farmers who have diversified.”

Kane describes a culture of collaboration within the Deliciously Yorkshire membership, where businesses are seen as interconnected. “It’s like a family,” she says. “In a good way.”

“If anybody’s got an issue, they might come to me and say they’ve got a bit of a problem with X, and do I have any ideas. I might not have the answer, but you can be

sure within the community there will always be somebody who has that answer and is very happy to help.”

And this “family” is open to newcomers. Stephen Fleming, the owner of George & Joseph, didn’t used to work in retail – nor was he always based in Yorkshire. After a 20-year career in IT, he followed his passion and opened a cheese shop in Chapel Allerton. To Fleming, Yorkshire’s food & drink industry is a continuously evolving environment.

“Certainly in my own business journey, it’s been great to have so much support from lots of other people starting out in the food and drink world,” whether cheesemakers, brewers, greengrocers, or fine dining restaurateurs.

“And they’re not necessarily Yorkshire people, but they’re doing it in Yorkshire.”

Of course, a thriving food and drink sector wouldn’t exist without strong demand.

While this applies across the UK, Fleming notes that certainly in Leeds and the surrounding areas, “buying habits have changed”.

“We are much more interested in where our food comes from, wanting to buy stuff that’s not ultra-processed or that’s got a good story to it, as opposed to just shopping in the supermarkets like our parents would have done. I think there’s a shift back to the way our grandparents would have shopped.”

This sentiment is echoed by Deliciously Yorkshire chair David Whittle, who believes that as provenance becomes more important to consumers, the county is well-placed to meet their needs.

“It’s our mission to make Yorkshire the food capital of Britain,” he says.

Whether or not that goal is achieved, it seems, depends on the fine people of Yorkshire.

West Yorkshire

Mario Olianas – an AustrianItalian raised in Sardinia – moved to Otley near Leeds in the early 2000s, where he started making Yorkshire Pecorino. The ewe’s milk cheese was unlike the aged style found here at the time, as it is only matured for 30 days, and so is soft and supple. The producer also makes Leeds Blue using the same base recipe as the fresh Pecorino, but injects it with blue mould spores. yorkshirepecorino.co.uk
