EDITOR’S NOTE
- almost mundane -but today they are cherished memories. This season, start your own, new family traditions that make sense in your lifestyle. Collecting or making ornaments is an old favorite, as is cooking or taking a special family outing. Whatever the act, create a new tradition this year that your family can participate in, and one day cherish. One essential holiday tradition everyone partakes in is shopping. In this month’s issue, we feature the city of Solana Beach, which not only offers beautiful beaches and trendy restaurants, but an entire design district on Cedros Avenue. You won’t want to miss out on these unique stores from local artists and national design houses. Get a jump on your holiday shopping without the fear of a repeat gift here. Also
EDITOR’S NOTE Rediscovering the Season of Giving! Fall is a time of harvest, where we collect the fruits of the year and gather together to celebrate with family and friends. It marks the beginning of the holiday season, which brings even more opportunities to reflect. Yet, despite the season best know for “giving thanks”, it’s hard to escape the hustle and bustle that accompanies it. Now more than ever with technology and world events moving us rapidly into the unknown, it’s time to get a new, fresh take on what lies before us. Life as we know it is changing rapidly, but there are ways to keep family tradition and all the things we hold dear front and center during this busy holiday season. First, instead of dreading technology, embrace it. From the i-pad to the latest droid, staying in touch and connected doesn’t have to be difficult. Digital calendars and google resources are available at our finger tips, making virtually everything we plan, buy or do that much easier. Send out virtual party invitations or holiday photos, buy seasonal goods from across the country, or organize a gift giving drive or local fundraising event. With time at a premium, use the resources before you (even if you have to ask your kids for help). Second, take a sincere look at what the season’s all about; that is, giving back. It’s so easy to get into a rut and simply go through the motions. This year, choose gifts from the heart, rather than the pocket book. Make choices that can be world-changing or have lasting effects that go beyond the day or season. Today’s economy doesn’t just speak to the concept of saving, it demands us to look at our world and how we effect others. The beauty of it is, we change ourselves for the better. Through organizations like Kids Korps, we can hand down this premise to our own children and encourage younger generations to transform their own lives by helping the less fortunate. On a personal note, when I look back at my childhood, it’s easy to recall the family traditions that were so routine

on the home fashion front, FINE is pleased to announce an exclusive book signing event with Home fashion maven and former model, Kathy Ireland. C’est La Vie of Encinitas will be hosting the book signing event that takes place on November 4th. Speaking of celebrations, this year marks the 7th anniversary of the San Diego Bay Food & Wine festival. Fall would not be complete without this much-anticipated event, which takes place on November 20th and features over 70 of San Diego’s finest food and 170 wine establishments. It’s a great way to kick off the holiday season, and a keen opportunity to shore up cooking ideas for your holiday table. In the world of fashion, San Diego is fortunate to have it’s very own designers who operate locally, however, their reputation in high couture is international. One such designer is Magorzata, who talked exclusively to FINE about her fall couture line, living here in San Diego and her experience at New York design institutes. Also in the spirit of giving and fashion, FINE magazine was privileged to speak with “Style Guy”, Leonard Simpson, who once again has chosen San Diego’s 10 Best Dressed Awards, which will be celebrated November 6th at the 3rd Annual Dressed to the Nth Degree event. This and much more awaits you in the pages of FINE, including a unique look at a new Polo Resort that will be opening soon in Cabo San Lucas. Club Polo owner, Tony Yahyai, talks about his franchise project that involves polo services previously unheard of in the world of polo. More beautiful homes and quality listings are the reason people return to the pages of FINE; to get everything thing they need to know about San Diego, and more importantly, about the lifestyle we all live. Here’s hoping this issue jump starts your holiday season and brings you a very rich harvest.

LA JOLLA, CA
San Diego’s preferred luxury home furnishing destination, Seaside Home, is relocating to a new 32,457 square foot location in the heart of La Jolla this November. The landmark space was previously occupied by retail giant, Saks Fith Avenue, on the corner of Wall Street and Herschel Avenue. With this move, Seaside Home will not only revitalize one of La Jolla’s landmark buildings, but it also represents the largest square footage transaction in the home furnishing industry in San Diego County for 2010. By merging its Rancho Santa Fe and Girard Avenue locations into one venue, Seaside Home will effectively triple its space as compared to its previous locations. Owner, Sheryll Jackman, plans to include an upstairs lounge area where designers and clients can meet in a relaxed and comfortable setting. The space will include a complimentary coffee and wine bar adjacent to an outdoor patio. It will also feature two elevators and a wide central staircase. Jackman’s vision for the new flagship store is to build upon the past 14 years by redefining the meaning of home styling and design. She and Seaside Home will continue to be at the forefront of design innovation and trends, adding credibility to another trend; that San Diego remains a top design destination for all of Southern California. Mariana Posthwaite is an interior design guru. The culmination of her life work and experience has brought her here to San Diego, where she owns and operates Casa Duhagon; an interior design house that specializes in interior design, furniture, interior decor, lighting design and accessorizing. To appreciate Mariana’s expertise, it’s best to look at her background and the road that led her to the world of design. Growing up, Mariana was inspired by art, painting, drawing and sculpture always leaning toward all that is three dimensional. She comes from a diverse artistic background; her father was in construction, her mother’s family was in fine art, her aunt was a photographer and her grandfather was the President of the Mexicali BC House of Culture. With these influences, she chose to study architecture in college. To her, the decision was plain and simple. She studied at ITESO (Ibero), a school founded by Jesuits in Guadalajara, Jalisco. There, the faculty of Architecture had the academic examples of the great creative masters of Jalisco; Luis Baarragan, Ignacio Diaz Morales and Juan Palomar, to name a few. This movement of theory and contemporary Mexican architecture changed her life. She started to form in-existent spaces and imagine how they looked completed with a single line and drawing paper. After earning her degree in architecture, she started a new path towards interior design. This journey took her to Boston, where she earned her master’s in interior design. At her new University (BAC), she fell in love with the school and learned that interior design is different than what is called “decoration.” Immersed in this new environment and style of Victorian Boston, Mariana was awe struck by the intimate European and American design which was so different from the brutalist design that she had seen in her days in Guadalajara. She took on her first job in San Diego under the leadership of Amy Noel Finley. Amy introduced her to the world of interior design aesthetic by taking her to the furniture fairs in Milan, New York and Paris. Mariana quickly realized that anything is possible. In 2008, she formed Casa Duhagon where she has combined her work experience and aesthetic design skills into a successful career. Today, Casa Duhagon caters to clients throughout San Diego county and beyond. Mariana strives to bring her life philosophy into each design project, specializing in bringing a new, creative soul to each home that is truly reflective of the owner’s essence. Each project is different, having its own fresh style and is 100% livable and turnkey.

Along with choosing the right location, food and wine selections, restaurateurs have been keeping ambiance, aesthetics and design details a top priority when opening or re-opening their establishments. For the past several years the creative and more artfully themed designed restaurants and bars have made their way into the neighborhoods and hot spots across San Diego. From the whimsy and novel to the super creative, ingenious and visually stimulating; the newest and best designed restaurants and bars that San Diego has to offer are a design experience worth taking a bite into.
VIN DE SYRAH Located in the basement on the corner of 5th and E, in the Gaslamp Quarter, Vin de Syrah takes a trip to a storybook wonderland. The secret, secret garden entry door is just the beginning to the genius and creative interior design filled with layers of color and texture. Hanging Victorian parasols, silk boxwood lined walls and glass goblet pendant candle holders are just a few of the originally designed details that have you looking for more. Vin de Syrah artistically combines a vivid color pallet with rustic wood paneling and mirrored columns. Enjoy a wine tasting at the organic solid wood dining table surrounded by terracotta pot towers. Vin de Syrah raises the design of this bar to a higher level; a design experience worth taking. CAFÉ CHLOE On G Street and 9th Avenue in the East Village, Café Chloe brings a little Paris to San Diego. With its rich worn wood floors, dark stained woodwork and clean contrasted counter and bistro table tops, this quaint and beautifully designed café is one beret away from a perfect Parisian design experience. Sit outside on a true bistro styled chair among the cast metal patina urns filled with green shrubs and flowers. Inside the white walls and high gloss crown and base boards allow the afternoon light to accent the black and white portrait photography and daily offerings on the chalk board menu. Merci to Café Chloe; truly the best designed bistro our city has to offer. Dowtown San Diego | 721 9th Avenue |San Diego, CA 92101-6101 (619) 232-3242 | www.cafechloe.com
CUCINA URBANA Formally known as Laurel Restaurant, Cucina Urbana (re)opens with a new name and one of the best (re)designed restaurants San Diego has to offer. Where citychic meets the farm; Cucina Urbana creates a hip and stylish restaurant for all to enjoy. From the rustic turned leg dining tables to the burlap backed dining chairs; the creative use of materials proves that great design starts with a good, if not brilliant design concept. Reclaimed wood paneling throughout the columns and walls, and polished concrete floors paired with rustic accents and accessories, and industrial lighting allows for a comfortable dichotomy that fits within a San Diego casual lifestyle. COWBOY STAR RESTAURANT & BUTCHER SHOP Saddle up to Cowboy Star Restaurant on 10th Avenue in the East Village for an entirely new design experience. This seamlessly converted warehouse space is the perfect combination of modern design, just the right touch of theme and a creative use and mix of materials. No howdy here, but be welcomed by a gas fireplace, a cowhide sofa, and rocking chairs while you wait to be seated. Walk past the open styled chef’s kitchen surrounded in exposed wood beams and stainless steel panels. Take note of the exposed brick wall lined with photographs of landscapes and cowboys that have you thinking it’s time to chow time. Opulent Design Luxurious Dreams of Couture
PHOTOGRAPHY BY: Jonah Gilmore CREATIVE DIRECTION & STYLING BY: Venessa Johnson HAIR AND MAKEUP BY: Diesel Salon CLOTHING BY: Malgorzata Couture HATS BY: Carol Bader Designs
Malgorzata is a name whispered off the lips of San Diego’s most fashionable, but what many people aren’t aware of is the journey that landed such talent here in our finest city. Born in Poland, Malgorzata was expected to be an architect like her father, however, these family plans did not come to fruition after she was chosen to study fashion in the United States. Prior to this, she was not aware that one could make a career out of fashion, but thanks to the college program led by the great Marvin Traub, an American retail legend and creator of the famous Bloomingdale’s, Malgorzata received the chance of a lifetime.
After graduating, she worked her way up the ranks of New York fashion by working as a seamstress in a dress shop, creating costumes in a theater and eventually as her own designer. After gaining more experience at numerous design houses from New York to Los Angeles, she made her way to San Diego where she has built an impressive career and reputation out of creating couture dreams for an elite, but ever-growing following. These style mavens trust her to create for them one-of-a-kind gowns or cocktail dresses that, in the fashion world, are the closest thing to a personally commissioned work of art. FINE magazine caught up with Malgorzata to give its readers a glimpse of the woman behind the couture magic. Here is what she had to say… FINE Magazine: What inspires you? Malgorzata: Oh my goodness, people inspire me, fabric inspires me, a photograph, a piece of artwork. I love looking at the trims and fabric, that is the most inspiring. FINE Magazine: Who are your fashion icons? Malgorzata: Valentino, the real Valentino, not the team now. Alexander McQueen was amazing. He was incredible. I love celebrities, Cate Blanchett, Meryl Streep. The interesting women who wear the clothes. FINE Magazine: When did you know this was the career for you? Malgorzata: At a very early age I was making clothes. I didn’t know you could even choose fashion as a career until entering college. INE Magazine: What has been your most rewarding design so far? Malgorzata: It’s always the latest. Lately [it is] the solid gold and the sequence [one in the photo shoot]. FINE Magazine: What is your favorite quote? Malgorzata: “Life without passion is inexcusable.” FINE Magazine: Tell our readers one thing about you that they would not expect? Malgorzata: I love camping! FINE Magazine: What piece of clothing would you not wear in public? Malgorzata:
Sweats!

SOL ANA BEACH article by: MACHEL PENN SHULL
California Drea min’ by the Sea
The Belly Up is one of San Diego’s best live music venues to visit.
What beach town in San Diego has countless restaurants, a design district, a theatre group and a renowned musical venue? That would be Solana Beach. From the Belly Up Tavern to the North Coast Repertory Theatre; from a perfect picnic at Fletcher’s Cove to a day of shopping in the Cedros design district, Solana Beach is more than just a popular beach town along the 101 Highway. Solana Beach has its own verve or vibe of electricity that sets it apart from its neighboring beach communities. There’s an air of ‘California cool’ that emulates from this town, from its residents to its business owners, whose comfortable lifestyle show us what it means to live and breath the California dream. Residents of Solana Beach are like any other town; some have been there for decades or more, while others have moved in more recently. All share a love of the ocean, a proximity to San Diego’s main attractions, and an affinity for gorgeous sunsets. Resident, Steve Ostrow, has lived in Solana Beach for over 20 years. He explains why he feels this is no ordinary train stop on the Southern California Coastline. “There is so much that goes into this small town,” he says. “The residents have the ability to really touch the city by participating in community events. We have our share of sushi restaurants, yoga, night time hot spots like the Belly Up, and you must mention the North Coast Repertory. It has been there

for years. If you want to take your family for a picnic, Fletcher’s Cove is within walking distance from the train station. I don’t know of any other beach town that has such a diverse culture with world class music and a design center in the heart of the city.” With so many diverse, cultural attractions, we’ve highlighted the top four must-see spots that one should not miss when visiting this unique beach city: 1. CEDROS DESIGN DISTRICT This cultural hot spot has more than just furniture shops lining its storefronts. You can spend one fabulous day walking Cedros Avenue. With countless art galleries, gift shops and antique dealers, this area attracts everyone from interior decorators to home furnishing businesses vying for their own address on Cedros.
2. FLETCHER’S COVE This wonderful beach park with playgrounds is just steps away from the waves. There are picnic tables, bathrooms and showers all conveniently close to make a perfect day under the sun. A wonderful idea would be to bring lunch with your family and spend the day relaxing, enjoying the surf and sun.

3. THE BELLY UP Touted as one of the hottest clubs on the West Coast by Rolling Stone, The Belly Up is a local tavern that brings live music every night to Solana Beach. Internationally acclaimed and also voted “San Diego’s Best Live Music Venue” by the UT, it promises to be an exciting evening no matter if you see a headliner or tomorrow’s next great act. Check out their web site for performances and dates at www.bellyup.com
funishings to design galleries
4. THE NORTH COAST REPERTORY Are you ready for some live theatre? North Cost Repertory Theatre, a non-profit organization, started over 29 years ago in Solana Beach. Their mission is “to create a platform where artist and audience thrive through the intimacy of live theatre, recognizing the power of theatre to challenge complacency, revitalize the imagination, nurture the unexpected and embrace the variety and diversity in our lives.” The setting is intimate, and don’t be fooled by it’s size. This theatre has year round performances with talented actors, selling around 40,000 tickets in the 194 available seats. Check the show times at their web site http://www.northcoastrep.org . Bring your family or a date, and be ready to experience live theatre at its finest. How wonderful that Solana Beach supports this non-profit organization. So, the next time you’re looking for some California dreamin’, take note of Solana Beach. Of course, there is always the Pacific Ocean with reliable waves, sunshine and relaxation. But don’t be afraid to add a little music or theatre into the mix. When it comes to more choices, don’t forget the shopping and restaurants along the 101 to end your S.B. experience on a high note.
Fletcher cover is a wonderful place to spend the day with your family.

INTRODUCING
Aaron Roth R E A LT O R
For Aaron Roth, real estate success is a family tradition. Aaron grew up in the real estate industry, where he spent many hours as a teenager in his mother’s successful appraisal office. He was further mentored by his Uncle, who built high end custom homes. Today, Aaron has built his own impressive career as one of North County’s top producing Realtors for Ranch and Coast Residential. In addition, he is the Owner and Senior Appraiser of Accelerated Appraisal Source. Aaron’s extensive real estate background encompasses over 15 years of appraisal/valuation experience, investments/ acquisitions and sales. 2010 has been a substantial year of growth for his agency, and Aaron is only expecting new growth and opportunities in the coming years. As a State Certified Appraiser, Operations Manager/Realtor and a member of the Institute of Luxury Home Marketing, he is confident that his dynamic credentials separate him from the crowd in ways that not only look good on paper, but pay rich dividends to his clients. What Separates You From All of Your Competitors? I’m so grateful that I love coming to work each day. My unique background of high end appraisal work, from San Diego County to Los Angeles County, has provided me with a wide-ranging and diverse professional experience. I consider myself to be a complex, luxury home appraisal expert. This niche experience, combined with my tenacious work ethic, excellent customer service, integrity and ability to negotiate set me apart from the competition.
What Are Three Things That Most People Don’t Know About You? Most people don’t know that I’m a former Marine; I’m completely addicted to hot yoga; and I’ve recently committed to reading more in my spare time.
Have You Had Any Mentors Along The Way? My mentors have come into my life when not expected, and are from all walks of life. My mentors are individuals who have the intangible qualities that I cherish; respect, honesty, modesty and loyalty.
How Have You Helped Someone This Year? I’m grateful for the numerous and continuous testimonials of gratitude from my clients. Every time I successfully represent a seller, buyer or investor, I have assisted someone with my professional skill set and dedication. On a personal level, I support local and community events, as well as various philanthropic non-profit agencies. I consider it my responsibility and a privilege to give back to the community I love, work and reside in.

CLUB POLO RESORT IN CABO article by: l.a. nelson
They say it’s the oldest organized sport known to mankind, dating back some 2,500 years and having its roots in Persia. They also say it was the game of Kings and Queens, played for sport, or “fun”. Being an effective means of training one’s military cavalry, it spread to other countries, including the U.S. After the end of WWII and the demise of calvary usage, the sport found another niche. Today, it’s become its own elite business, celebrated internationally as a sport that is played, followed and otherwise revered by the rich and famous. Competition amongst players and horse owners has become fierce in the past decade, where trophy titles rank synonymous with social status. This pedigree is part of polo’s history and roots; however, such complicated evolution has one man wondering if it isn’t time to get back to the other root of the game; that is, the “FUN” of it. Tony Yahyai, President of Club Polo, remembers it quite vividly. Having spent his childhood in the large, multi-cultural city of Tehran, Iran, he was made well aware of the game’s lofty status and unfortunately, how it was not accessible to common people. “In my youth I longed to play polo, but the game was only played among the Shah, his royal family and friends, or people involved in politics or the high ranking military. I studied the history of polo from day one, as it was always my wishful thinking to play myself.” Having lived in the United States for the past 36 years and making his own successful business and fortune here in Rancho Santa Fe, Tony decided it was time to realize his childhood dream. For the past five years, he has devoted six days a week at the San Diego Polo Club; playing, riding, learning, and most of all having fun. He soon became a member of the United States Polo Association and a member of the Board of Directors for the Mexican

Federation of Polo. Along this journey, Tony came up with the idea of building a world-class “polo resort”. What makes it unique is that Club Polo resorts will be a franchise with many locations around the world. Cabo San Lucas is the first “pilot” location. The second location being negotiated is in the Ensenada region; Baja north in the middle of wine country, also called Valley Guadeloupe. There is talk of a third location just north of Sacramento. Just like golf country clubs, the Club Polo resort will change up the menu to include everything about the sport of polo. The 130-acre Cabo San Lucas community sits on top of a hill with vast views of the pacific ocean from the field of play. The completed resort will consist of two polo fields; one practice field and one arena. It will have installations for 130 horses. 125 homesites are planned, 60 condos and a 37-suite 5-star hotel are planned. Field One will have 500 stadium seats and a VIP section. The facility will have 40-60 horses at all times
built. Like the entire resort, 90% of the lots have ocean views, and 80% are around the polo fields. But, with all this talk about luxury and beauty, Tony cannot help but return to his original dream: “My vision is basically to bring fun back to polo. Coming from the old country - Tehran where polo was created - I want to promote it and show it to the world community that anyone can play polo.” When asked how he’ll go about it, Tony’s response is well thought-out: “First, my number one goal is to target teenagers - boys or girls - and teach them polo, just like football or basketball... so these young people will at least be able to taste the sport of polo. My second target is ladies. Today, polo is very much dominated by males, however, if you go back to the history of Persia over 1,000 years ago, queens and princesses had no problem playing against men. Third, doing charity work that is tied to children and polo is another concern. For example,
so that weekend travelers can play any time of year. Season players can ship their horses out, and residents will have the luxury of having their own horses maintained by our staff. “We have chosen Century 21 as our real estate firm, as they have a strong international showing in over 58 countries,” says Tony. “Their sales and marketing divisions will help facilitate our future locations around the globe. Because of their international experience, we are assured of working with an established company able to deal with and address international property concerns. They will work with our U.S. attorney and title companies on these issues to gain any buyer 100% confidence that they are working with a legitimate operation and that their investment is 100% secure - just like you would do with any transaction in the U.S. or elsewhere.” Other amenities include two Clubhouses, a resort-style swimming pool, spa, fitness center and tennis courts, as well as very elaborate restaurants and bars. The anticipated final completion date is 5-7 years. Currently, they are working on the infrastructure and utilities. Next they will build a clubhouse and 3-4 model homes. Architect, Michael Avery, is a Berkeley graduate who has worked in Southern California, Bel Air, Malibu and Orange County will bring a certain design to the resort. Within this architectural guideline, custom homes can be
in Cabo San Lucas there is an orphanage with 22 children, and already we’ve signed a contract with them to bring six orphans over to our facility to play polo. As long as they are willing to stay and learn, we will teach them for free.” Through the Club Polo franchise, Tony envisions a true polo community, where people can build a love and respect for the game through play and interaction with horses - all in a safe, conservative, family oriented environment. He looks forward to making this once-forbidden sport accessible to all who desire it. The Club Polo Season Opening will kick off this November 20th with the Club Polo Cabo 2010 Baja Gold Cup. Although the resort is under construction, the event’s regular sponsors will help put together an exciting event. Sponsors include Fiesta Amaricana, Clase Azul Tequila, The Me Melia Hotel, Corona, National Rent-A-Car, Shops of Palmia, Diamond International, Red Bull, Aeromexico, and more. Tony encourages everyone to come stay in one of their sponsored hotels at a discounted rate, see the tournament, view the property and enjoy all polo has to offer. SAN DIEGO article by: HAROLD S. SMALL, J.D., AEP
Now that wine and food pairings have become all the rage, I am frequently asked, “What wine should I order” or “What wine should I buy? My response is typically, “What wine do you like?” If you’re not sure, the best solution may be to experiment with different pairings, and try, try again. Trial and error with good food and good wine provides a great way to learn. The San Diego Bay Wine & Food Festival gives you the opportunity to find wines that you like and learn more about pairings. Now in its 7th year, and with 70 of the San Diego area restaurants/chefs creating terrific food and more than 170 wineries pouring more than 700 different wines, it’s the perfect opportunity to be schooled. Food preparation/cooking stations are created for each of the chefs and similar pouring areas are set up for all of the wineries. Each participant at the Grand

The idea for this event came from Irina Rachow, owner of Fairen Del boutiques, who had the vision to create an exciting and fun nighttime event as a way to promote the fashion and vitality of the downtown Carlsbad village. The event was held at Relm, a new wine and beer bistro on State Street.
