Westgate Park City Resort and Spa.

A Winter Wonderland Park City, Utah Offers a World-Class Skiing Experience By Evangeline Turner

Freshly-fallen snow coats a tree-laden mountainside as wind whips through the air. Smoke curls from a quaint lodge’s chimney, delivering the scent of alpine logs to pink-tinged faces. Nestled in northern Utah near Salt Lake City, Park City is a picturesque ski town known for high-end resorts, delectable dining and incredible downhill skiing. Originally conceived as a mining town in the 1860s, the abundant silver veins that ran through the Utah mountains drew thousands of people to the area, leading to the creation of 1,200 miles of mining tunnels twisting beneath the surface. While the tunnels lie empty now, Park City’s mountains still bring thousands of people in every winter for their scenic ski slopes. (cont. on p.28)

Westgate Park City also boasts cutting-edge dining in the form of their opulent restaurant Edge Steakhouse. Opened in 2012, Edge Steakhouse is led by award-winning Chef Wayne Christian and provides top-quality American cuisine prepared with locally sourced and organically grown ingredients. The menu includes specialty appetizers made from fresh-caught fish that combine sweet and spicy flavors—such as their tantalizing Silk Road Spicy Shrimp—as well as heavenly sides demanding your indulgence, like their Truffle Parmesan Pomme Frites. The real standout at Edge Steakhouse, however, is the USDA Certified Prime Aged Beef and Wagyu Beef, which is easily paired with the steakhouse’s award-winning selection of wines. Edge Steakhouse isn’t the only first-rate dining experience in Park City—Deer Valley Resort offers fireside dining in their Empire Canyon Lodge. Featuring a rotating menu of warm, comforting food inspired by the European Alps, fireside dining is a fun, family-friendly experience perfect for a cool, snowy evening. straight from a stone fireplace, guests can enjoy gooey chocolate fondu, warm swiss raclette cheese, fire-roasted legs of lamb and fresh-baked breads. Then, after a hearty meal served by a toasty fire, snuggle up to your loved ones in a horse-drawn sleigh, crisp snow crunching beneath the horses’ hooves. For a five-star dining experience in Canyons Village, The Farm at Park City Mountain Resort offers a varied menu prepared with fresh, sustainably-raised fare. From Braised Oxtail Onion Soup to Chickpea-Crusted Lamb, The Farm’s menu blends flavors together to create gorgeous dishes that will dip into your dreams. For a nightcap near the base of Park City Mountain, High West Distillery and Saloon is a local staple. Founded in 2009, High West Distillery produces mostly complex bourbon and rye whiskeys. While their house-produced whiskeys are not to be missed—their American Prairie Bourbon is 92 proof and aged in a white American oak barrel—the Saloon also offers cocktails, single malt scotches and other whiskeys from around the world. While stellar slopes and exquisite eateries raise Park City

to a world-class standard of luxury ski towns, the city’s unique history deserves praise too—namely, the Utah Olympic Park. This local landmark played host to the bobsled, skeleton, luge, ski jumping and Nordic combined events during the 2002 Olympic Winter Games. Now open to the public, the park is a fantastic place to simaltaneously breathe in fresh mountain air and national Olympic history. From the George Eccles 2002 Olympic Games Museum to the interactive Alf Engen Ski Museum to the Joe Quinney Winter Sports Center, the park offers guided tours and a behind the scenes peek at our Olympic history. Help a Child... Join Childhelp

John O’Hurley for the Prevention and Treatment of Child Abuse By Jess Yacovelle More than 3 million reports of child abuse are made each year in the United States—that’s 3 million reports of neglect, maltreatment, exploitation and physical harm annually. It’s a statistic that should be wiped clean––ideally dropped to zero instances of abuse––and celebrities such as John O’Hurley are fighting for that change. During a fundraiser hosted at Headlines the Salon in Encinitas, John O’Hurley acted as a celebrity ambassador for Childhelp, a philanthropy dedicated to the prevention and treatment of child abuse. Working in the entertainment industry since the 1980s, O’Hurley is best known for his role as J. Peterman—boss of Elaine Benes—on the classic NBC sitcom Seinfeld. Though Seinfeld, regarded by many as the gold standard of television comedies, aired its finale in 1998, O’Hurley believes nothing will ever come close to recapturing that magic. “Seinfeld [is] forever, because it is still considered the number one show on television,” O’Hurley says. “I don’t know that anything will ever surpass that—television can’t garner that much focus anymore. There are too many other distractions. It was the day the music died, when they cut the pie into too many slices.” While Seinfeld will always hold an everlasting thrall over the world, John O’Hurley is recognizable in a number of other television series. “A lot of [people] recognize me from Dancing with the Stars. I eventually won the first year, as longtime fans of the show [know],” O’Hurley says, speaking to the infamous and controversial post-finale dance-off against Kelly Monaco, wherein the fans crowned O’Hurley the winner. “Family Feud is still running, and the children all recognize my voice from [about] 15 different cartoons that I do: Spongebob Squarepants, Phineas and Ferb, Scooby-Doo, and more.” Though O’Hurley certainly has his hands full working in the industry, his philanthropic work has been consistently strong, particularly with Childhelp. “I’ve been an ambassador with Childhelp [for] over ten years…” explains O’Hurley on how he

30

got involved with the organization. “I was so taken by the story of what [founders Sara O’Meara and Yvonne Fedderson] did 57 years ago and the number of kids that they’ve saved through their focus on putting an end to child abuse.” Originally founded in 1959, actresses Sara O’Meara and Yvonne Fedderson were inspired to form Childhelp after participating in a U.S. backed goodwill tour in Japan. There, they encountered a number of children abandoned and neglected by American soldiers; in an effort to help these children, O’Meara and Fedderson formed International Orphans, the first iteration of Childhelp. Today, the child abuse prevention organization is one of the largest in the country. With a focus on prevention, intervention and treatment, Childhelp’s goal is to end abuse once and for all. “[Childhelp] takes the most profoundly abused children and tries to return them to a sense of normalcy,” O’Hurley states. “They restore these kids’ self-identities and self-worth.” The organization has chapters all over the country, including an extremely active chapter in San Diego. One way in which Childhelp fights to raise awareness is through the use of celebrity ambassadors. From Betty White to Bill O’Reilly, Jordin Sparks to Shaquille O’Neal, Childhelp works with celebrities across the board to raise awareness for their worthy cause—according to John O’Hurley, the notion of “celebrity” has a distinct advantage. “People tend to listen to you more,” O’Hurley muses. “You can carry the flag for the things you believe in—though I think you have to be very careful about what you believe in as a celebrity. I’ve chosen wisely about what I spend my time with, and Childhelp is certainly at the forefront.” Though John O’Hurley will be back on Broadway this fall with the 20th anniversary of Bob Fosse’s musical Chicago, O’Hurley will continue to promote and raise awareness for Childhelp throughout the spring. Reichel/Pugh Yacht Design Brings Luxury Yachting to Town By Rosalie Cushman Well-muscled and nimble, the design and engineering firm Reichel/Pugh Yacht Design may have less notoriety in its own hometown of San Diego than it has on the world stage. Internationally, the company enjoys an electrifying reputation for elite Superyachts, Sportboat fleets and Maxi racers. The company demonstrates with astonishing alacrity and dedication their award-winning designs that cut through the ordinary. From the engineering and craftsmanship of the 1992 winner of the America’s Cup America3 in San Diego to 2003’s Team Stars and Stripes and the 2007’s Team Desafio Espanol, Reichel/Pugh’s brilliance expresses itself in every imaginable type of keel boat, including the pocket rocket Melges 24. The current introduction of the 130-foot superyacht My Song elevates what it means to combine innovative design with engineering prowess. At the helm are the firm’s co-founders and visionaries: Naval Architect John Reichel and decades-long designer, Grand Prix racer and industry leader Jim Pugh. They both individually and collectively inspire and drive the finest talent available. “In this niche market, the goal is to take a vision, create it and exceed expectations,” says Jim Pugh, adding, “for you to succeed, [clients] need to win.” Inspired from the age of 16, when his family moved to the south of England, Pugh watched boats on the river, mesmerized, and ultimately incorporated sailing and design into his life’s work. To further facilitate the company’s success, Reichel/Pugh has brought on board professionals of like minds. As if it wasn’t enough to fill their company with premium engineers, architects and designers, each staff member also rides the pro circuit. Because the designer/engineer becomes the sailor, the

32

compelling process further inspires and informs innovation. The result? Reichel/Pugh is always pushing into the next paradigm of possibility. With razor focus, the team takes the potential for beauty and combines it with impressive high-tech scientific applications. In the last two decades, Reichel/Pugh has turned yachts into ultraluxury performance superyachts, and it’s morphed one-designs into astonishing Melges sportboat worldwide racing fleets. Integrated into this effort is crew safety and ship seaworthiness, a driving philosophy that balances robust design with minimum weight. With that, Reichel/Pugh has become an international leader—recognized by shipbuilders and clients alike—for their integrity as well as their science.

REICHEL/PUGH DESIGNS The ultimate in luxury cruising, superyachts combine pleasure with the thrill of the race. These dual-purpose, multi-role hybrid boats serve two masters: a cruising experience with luxurious appointments, and a high-performance, optimizedfor-speed craft for the racing circuit. Cruise the Caribbean or Mediterranean with friends and family for a week, then strip down the yacht for racing––it’s the best of both worlds. Case in point: Reichel/Pugh’s 130’ My Song has set the tone for performance superyachting. In collaboration with Baltic Yachts, Italian design house Nauta Design and MCM created one of the most remarkable state-of-the-art, all carbon superyachts launched this fall. Built by Finland’s Baltic Yachts, their world-class staff provided precision manufacturing based on Reichel/Pugh’s co-located design and engineering team—a collaborative relationship fostered and nurtured through

Reichel/Pugh 200‘ Classic—Recreating the natural beauty of a classic yacht on the fluid surfaces of a modern hull combines the romance of the past with modern performance and vastly improved seakeeping.

previous projects. With designer Nauta’s deck and interior design collaboration and Reichel/Pugh’s naval architecture and structural engineering, My Song provides just one example of superyachts of the future. With the advent of Reichel/Pugh’s innovative Melges 20 sportboat debut in 2008, the company has become a quintessential leader of the most popular and competitive one-design sportboats in the world. Nearly forty Melges 20s sailed the 2015 Worlds of San Francisco; the 2015 Melges 24 Worlds boasted ninety-five boats, and over a hundred Melges 24s are expected at the upcoming world championship in Miami this November. No question, the Melges fulfills the demand for a more compact yet comfortable well-built sportboat. From the company’s exclusively designed introduction, Melges has brought to market a new standard in sportboat racing. With a highly organized global event circuit that encompasses North America, Europe and Australasia, this revolutionary style of boat has attracted sailors hungry for one-design racing. The Melges 20 is easy to launch and has top-of-the-line equipment that results in a complete sailing experience. Innovation has led the Reichel/Pugh team to create some of the fastest racers in the world. However if one defines the confluence of water and speed’s ecstasy, its exhilarating effects are made manifest in Reichel/Pugh’s offshore distance racing boats. A recent distance race serves as an excellent case in point as the company’s canting keel design dominated the 2016 Brisbane to Keppel Race with a win and course record set by the RP100 Wild Oats XI.

SETTING REICHEL/PUGH APART The company consistently outperforms itself by re-inventing racers and superyachts. An example of their strive for perfection? The company recently launched a 68’ Cruiser for a

repeat client whose goal included sailing along the California coast. Says Jim Pugh about the project, “While comfort and aesthetics were a priority, the owner was also focused on a high-performance design that would offer exhilarating rides.” The result has been an “all-carbon, nomex kevlar-core with a focus on high performance sailing, lightweight engineering and a simple, well-lit and functional interior.” Reichel/Pugh was chosen for the project based, in part, on their previous demonstration of design and engineering excellence. Yet the collaborative relationships the company has established with global giants such as builder Baltic Yachts and interior designer Nauta, as well as their own fully integrated design and engineering team’s ability to problem-solve in real time, were persuasive Is it any wonder Reichel/Pugh prevails as a global leader in design and engineering excellence? What’s next for the company? When asked about his vision for the future, Pugh comments, “We appreciate what we’ve achieved and want to provide opportunity for young talent who could have taken another route with their skills. We want to be an inspiration [to them], to realize and act on [their talents].” In an industry spread across several continents, providing a vehicle for this next generation to realize their own dreams is a dedication Pugh supports. The young guns who make their mark on this industry generally demonstrate “passion that is pretty amazing. Two of our guys just came back from winning two European regattas on our designs,” says Pugh. When asked about his own drive, Pugh declares: “It’s hard to put into words, [but] once you leave land and you’re out there… It’s quite amazing, something about it, it doesn’t go away.” Passion for design and talent for engineering fuel Reichel/Pugh and the high-quality yachts and superboats they craft. With a dedicated team at the helm of their luxury yachts and race boats, it’s easy to see how Reichel/Pugh can help you sail into the sunset. (cont. on p.34)

Veterans Research Alliance

Give Back to Local Veterans By Celia Taghdiri Military veterans are the pride and joy of our country––selfless acts of patriotism from these men and women protect our freedoms daily. Yet when veterans return home, the transition to civilian life is not always smooth. Many service members return with physical disabilities or emotional strain, and they need to obtain continuous medical treatments, adequate jobs and proper housing. Fortunately, San Diego offers supportive services for our veterans through the Veterans Research Alliance (VRA). According to the VRA’s Executive Director Steve Lewandowski, “The VRA was formed to serve as an independent non-profit organization charged [with raising] critically-needed private sector funds to supplement government grants. These funds fuel innovative, life-saving research and educational programs in San Diego.” The VRA primarily serves veterans residing in San Diego County, which has been a strong military town for the past century. San Diego has one of the strongest veteran populations in the U.S. with roughly 240,000 veterans, including 37,000 post 9/11 veterans––the largest in the nation. Due to this heavy influx of service members coping with medical challenges, there is an urgent need for the VRA in Southern California. As a third generation veteran and a former naval officer, Lewandowski is fully aware of the aftermath of war and the utmost need for medical services. “Just because the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are not garnering as many headlines, [that] doesn’t mean our members in uniform are no longer in need of services,” Lewandowski explains. “For some, the effects of war––such as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)––are just starting… We owe it to the few brave service members who volunteer to fight to also get the best medical treatment possible.” Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and PTSD are two of the most commonly reported mental health issues facing many veterans upon returning from overseas. If left untreated, these conditions can lead to suicide. According to the VRA, 22 veterans commit suicide daily, often as a result of TBI and PTSD. Since early 2014, the VRA has been successfully partnering with non-profit organizations and private enterprises to collect funds. To date, the VRA has funded: The Cognitive Rehabilitation Study. The VRA purchased and donated to a VA healthcare researcher the necessary

36

equipment to support a study examining the effects of cognitive rehabilitation among veterans. The Veteran Family Resilience Study. This study helps teach effective parenting skills, stress management and problem-solving skills to veteran families. A pilot program for combat veterans exposed to multiple blast explosions during wars fought after 9/11. This program will also help improve diagnosis for traumatic brain injury so more effective treatments can be offered. Another undertaking still in need of funding includes a VA transportation van, which is needed to transport patients from their homes to their medical appointments. Currently, the San Diego VA Medical Center has an aging fleet of transportation in need of replacement. Funding is also required for the Veteran Suicide Prevention Study, which aims to develop methods to better identify people at imminent suicide risk. Despite economic challenges, Lewandowski remains optimistic about the VRA’s future. “We’re starting to move the needle in the veterans community by identifying needs and resources.” If you would like to learn more about contributing to the VRA, please visit veteransresearchalliance.org.

The Legion of Boom The Remarkable Resurgence, Recovery and Revitalization of American Legion Post 416 By Emily Glaser America is a land of phoenix-like resurgences, tales where the underdogs overcome the seemingly impossible to rise from their ashes and fly to success. The rebirth of Encinitas’s American Legion Post 416 is one such tale. When Encinitas was a mere shell of a town in 1930, the American Legion—the largest veteran organization in the world—threaded their roots into the dusty soil, becoming the second still-existing business to call the city home. “We’re a part of the fabric of Encinitas,” says Post Commander Steve Lewandowski, a third-generation legionnaire. For nearly 90 years the legion was an integral part of the Encinitas community with thousands of members over the years, but two years ago the post was on the verge of collapse—literally and figuratively. Membership and money were negligible, and the leaders of the organization were content to see it fade away. Miraculously, new leadership stepped in and enacted a remarkable revitalization. “There were a lot of really high-quality, high-caliber, motivated individuals who were waiting in the wings,” says Lewandowski. “We got rid of the negativity and the hopelessness. We replaced [it] with people who were optimistic and willing to work, and a remarkable transformation occurred. It happened so vigorously that we achieved some incredible honors.” Among those honors are a bevy of awards and accolades, including the Boots on the Ground Award for recruiting the most members to an American Legion post (they recruited over 350 members in the last two years alone) and the National Commander’s Award of Post Excellence for California. The accomplishment for which Lewandowski is most proud, however, isn’t immortalized in bronze like the Boots on the

Ground Award, but cast in hearts: over the last year, members of the post have documented over 17,000 hours in community service for veterans and their families across San Diego County. In a city like San Diego, where the community is inherently threaded with military culture, the success of American Legion is integral to the success of this city. “The American Legion is a very special place because it’s a refuge,” Lewandowski explains. “Keep in mind, less than 1% of our country is serving in uniform. When our country needs defending, it’s the 99% of the rest of us who are depending on that 1%—which is all volunteer.” Post 416 is a home for the San Diegans who keep our country safe. The problem is, the literal collapse of the Legion’s buildings is still an unfortunate reality. The Legion is currently divided into three structures, two of which are physically falling apart. Extensive termite damage led to the collapsing of a wall, and the roof spots as many holes and leaks as a colander. With the new Save Our Legion campaign, Lewandowski and his fellow members plan to inspirit the physical Legion as they have inspired their membership. “We’re looking forward to involving the community in building the new building,” says Lewandowski. That’s not the only big development on the horizon for Post 416. This year, Veterans Day coincides with Opening Day of the fall season at Del Mar, and the Legion will work with dozens of other veteran causes to raise money for local vets. And, on December 10th, the National Commander will visit the post during the Army-Navy game. Though Lewandowski and the members of American Legion Post 416 have made huge strides, their ascent from the ashes isn’t over. Their dreams are big, but their capabilities are even bigger.

IN A CITY LIKE SAN DIEGO, “WHERE THE COMMUNITY

IS INHERENTLY THREADED WITH MILITARY CULTURE, THE SUCCESS OF AMERICAN LEGION IS INTEGRAL TO THE SUCCESS OF THIS CITY.

Ashley Nell Tipton for JCPenney.

ASHLEY NELL TIPTON Project Runway Season 14 Winner and San Diego Native By MiKhala Haile In years past, the fashion industry focused heavily on the “perfect” type of body––a narrow waist, slim thighs and tiny bird-like shoulders were the ideal many designers used to create their garments. Slowly, over the last few years, the world has grown more accepting of all body types, allowing women of all shapes and sizes to find clothing designed to have a flawless fit. This industry-wide shift—though slow to take effect—has allowed promising young designers like Ashley Nell Tipton to simultaneously flourish and help impact positive industry change. (cont. on p.42)

Born and raised in San Diego, 24-yearold Ashley Nell Tipton has already led an extraordinary life. In November of 2015, Tipton was crowned the winner of season 14 of the acclaimed fashion design competition show Project Runway. During her tenure on the Lifetime series, Tipton was a frequent challenge winner and fan favorite; she ultimately went on to win both the admiration of the judges and the entire season. As the first contestant to win showcasing a plus-size line for women, Tipton is already breaking ground in the fashion industry. Since claiming her crown, she has released a nail polish line in collaboration with FingerPaints that showcases bright, bold colors. Her most recent project? An ongoing partnership with JCPenney producing their first plus-size fashion brand. The line is about embracing body positivity by showcasing colorful, fashionable and figure-flattering designs for plus-size women. With their daring #HereIAm campaign encouraging women to accept their outer beauty, Ashley Nell Tipton is the face of positive change and growth in the fashion industry. After showcasing her latest line at New York Fashion Week, FINE Magazine spoke with the burgeoning designer about her triumph, her upcoming partnership with JCPenney and her views on the plus-size industry. Describe the months since your Project Runway win. It’s been a rollercoaster of emotions. I’ve always wanted to make a difference in the plus-size community, and I knew it would happen. [I] just never knew when it would happen. How did your JCPenney #HereIAm campaign and collaboration begin? [ JCPenney] heard how much I talked about the plus-size community. They were inspired by my drive and passion to approach things differently, treat the community differently and make the plus-size community feel good about themselves with that boost of confidence.

42

FINEsd.com • facebook.com/FINEmagazines

After that, everything just kind of flowed. What can Ashley Nell Tipton fans and JCPenney lovers expect from the line? Something different, youthful and fun. I really want the women who purchase anything from this collection to have fun, think outside the box, have personality and shine through the clothing. I don’t want there to be negativity [surrounding] the clothing. I want women to have that boost of confidence that makes them feel alive and know they don’t have to hide behind clothing to feel good about themselves. How does it feel to be brand ambassador of JCPenney’s first plussize fashion brand? Crazy! I still can’t believe it. I’m the first plus-size designer to win Project Runway and have a plus-size line shown on Project Runway. [I’m] now working with JCPenney as a Brand Ambassador and designer for their very first plus-size line... I knew me making a change in the community would happen, [I] just never knew when. As of now I’m focusing on the JCPenney line. This was so hectic for me, with all of the deadlines I had to meet. I sometimes had to take pieces home to work on them because there was so much to do in order to have everything ready before Fashion Week. I do have a lot coming in the future—collaborating with other companies—but I want to focus on one line at a time. I always want to make sure everything is perfect. With the JCPenney line, I want to make sure the fit and quality is perfect and nothing was half-assed because that wouldn’t be fair to my fans and the women buying the collection. Ashley Nell Tipton’s collection with JCPenney can be found online and in stores now. With a warm spirit and raw determination, Tipton will undoubtedly implement change in the fashion world, bringing quality plus-size clothing to the forefront of the industry.

I WANT WOMEN TO “HAVE THAT BOOST OF

CONFIDENCE THAT MAKES THEM FEEL ALIVE AND KNOW THEY DON’T HAVE TO HIDE BEHIND CLOTHING TO FEEL GOOD ABOUT THEMSELVES.

THE

3 BIGGEST MISTAKES IN

EVENT

You’ve seen your future event in your mind, and you know your dream décor will give your party a lasting impression. The food you’ve selected will be delectable; the DJ and the band will provide sensational sounds sure to overwhelm the night with energy. It’s a vision executed down to the last painstaking detail; just add flawless lighting, and everything will be perfect.

BEFORE

AFTER

But wait—who can provide lighting? What kind of lights will guarantee your event’s dream look? How much does lighting cost? Is it even necessary? These are all good questions, and often they’re difficult to answer on your own—unless you know a lighting professional. Let’s look at the three biggest mistakes you can make in letting an amateur light the way:

Mistake # 1: Have the band or a DJ provide the lighting.

AFTER

BEFORE

LIGHTING

It’s common for a band or DJ to offer lighting packages with their service, but they generally own low-end and marginally professional lighting that doesn’t have bright color choices or reliability. As a musical service provider, a band or DJ may lack the technical skills and knowledge necessary, and their lights may be missing the clean appearance of unobtrusive lighting fixtures. Solution: Let the band or DJ do what they do best: create music and ambiance. Good bands and DJs will have lighting partners they can vouch for, ensuring that you receive top-quality lighting from start to finish from a standout professional.

Mistake #2: Expecting your venue to provide lighting as part of their rental package. Except in hotels, it’s rare for soiree venues to have in-house, high-quality audio/ visual equipment. If you do find a venue with A/V capabilities or gear, they’re often grossly overpriced and don’t offer creative lighting perspective. An additional drawback to in-house audio, video and lighting services is the standard procedure of management setting lighting up before the event, leaving and then returning later only to break it down. This provides zero lighting support during the event beyond operating an on/off switch, making complex lighting a nonstarter.

Solution: Seek out a small A/V or lighting company that has a vested interest in satisfying you, your needs and your guests to ensure complete satisfaction. Mistake #3: You think the lighting in the room is “good enough.” It’s true: Mother Nature does a fine job of providing unmatched lighting for entirely windowfilled event spaces during the day, but any evening soiree or gala in an enclosed space requires extra lights. Solution: Use a professional lighting production company to assist with developing your ideas and enhancing your concept to execute the experience of your dreams!

MADE TO ENTERTAIN

Actress Melora Hardin: Queen of the TV Screen BY JESS YACOVELLE

W

ith grace, poise and an Emmy nomination, actress Melora Hardin stepped onto the FINE Magazine fashion photoshoot set brimming with confidence. The actress has spent the last few decades basking in the spotlight, working hard to earn a number of reoccurring and guest starring roles in prominent TV shows. With a hefty resume and an award-winning smile, Hardin dominated our gala-themed photoshoot without breaking a sweat—but after playing everything from an amused, fast-talking therapist to a former flame for a leading lady, turning out stunning photos is an easy feat. The daughter of actor Jerry Hardin—best known for his role as Deep Throat on The X-Files—acting is in Melora Hardin’s blood, and it’s always been on her mind. “When I was six years old I accompanied my dad to his commercial agents,” explains Melora, describing how she fell in love with the trade. “I pestered my parents until they finally decided to let me go on ten auditions and had a plan that if I didn’t get anything, they’d ease me out of the business. But I got the first audition I went out on, and I was hooked!” Her passion for the industry shows; to date, Hardin has appeared in over 70 movies and television series, including NCIS, Friends, 27 Dresses, Gilmore Girls, Scandal and Falling Skies. With a wide array of guest roles under her belt, it’s perhaps difficult to differentiate between some of her past performances, but a few have stuck out in Hardin’s mind. “When I was a little girl I was pretty excited to be on The Love Boat because it was one of my favorite shows as a kid,” Hardin explains. “I also loved doing two episodes of Little House on the Prairie because I had a huge crush on Matthew Labyorteaux (Albert Ingalls on the show), who became one of my very best friends—and still is to this day.”

W

hile Melora Hardin is most recognizable as the versatile actress who has been in almost every modern television show, her reoccurring and series regular work is just as extensive. From her first main role as Cindy Prescott in 1977’s Thunder to her 45 episode run as Vice President of Northeast Sales Jan Levinson on The Office, Hardin’s no stranger to developing thoughtful, wellrounded characters. Her current project is playing Tammy Cashman on Transparent, which recently released its third season all at once on Amazon Prime’s streaming service. Amazon’s Transparent revolves around the Pfefferman clan as their patriarch reveals he has always identified as a woman. Playing a former lover (and eventual love interest) of eldest child and married woman Sarah Pfefferman, the role of Tammy Cashman garnered Hardin her first Emmy nomination for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series. While the award wound up in the hands of Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, the character Tammy has become a critical darling and granted Hardin some much-deserved recognition. “Tammy is such a rich role and unlike any character I’ve seen on TV,” Hardin says. “It was just wonderful to feel that my peers and Academy voters felt that Tammy resonated enough with the audience that my portrayal of her should be recognized.” Transparent itself is no stranger to Emmy recognition; to date, the Amazon show has received twenty-one nominations and eight wins over the last two years. The show is quickly becoming a cultural touchstone, something iconic that will live on in people’s hearts for years after the series ends. It’s the progressive nature of Transparent, Hardin believes, that has endeared the show to viewers so quickly. “The greatest thing about being a part of Transparent is the good it’s doing in the world,” Hardin says. “To open people’s minds and hearts with love and laughter to a part of society that has been otherized for so long is really significant. Transgender people are just people getting through life the best that they can, like all of us.” Indeed, part of what makes Transparent so enthralling to watch is that the Pfefferman family is relatable— they undergo trials and tribulations of the heart and mind just like everyone else. From an unhappy marriage to employment struggles, Transparent runs the gamut of everyday situations with one culturally relevant exception—and while some might call the heavy focus on a transgender character a gimmick or an oddity, upon viewing the series, it’s apparent that relying on a gimmick is the exact opposite of what Transparent is doing. “The show is really about a family, and the father just happens to be transgender,” illustrates Hardin. “[It’s] an amazing door into normalizing transgender people while exploring family dynamics.”

Apart from being A+ entertainment—filled with comedy, drama and heartbreaking moments—Transparent is having a real world impact and broadening the conversation surrounding LGBT rights. Popular and available media like the Amazon hit is actively changing opinions daily—and Hardin is thrilled to be a part of it all. “To be on a show that is opening up and engaging in a larger conversation about the need to de-stereotype transgender people and include them in creative expression more honestly,” Hardin says, “as well as helping to dissolve prejudice and misunderstandings that [lead] to far too many murders and suicides in the transgender community is incredible!” Few shows can boast such a positive cultural impact after only three seasons, but the Amazon series is breaking ground. But then, Amazon has always been considered a groundbreaking media provider; along with Netflix, Amazon Prime was one of the first streaming services to develop original content and release it all at once, with every episode available on the same day. While binging TV is now many people’s preferred method of consuming media, for an actress like Melora Hardin, it changes the way a TV show is written and performed. “The through-line of a show is even more important now than ever before,” explains Hardin. “When you know that your audience is watching two or three episodes at a time, you don’t have to keep reminding them of the details that have just occurred and can delve deeper into the characters and the narrative.” The result? Stronger stories told at a faster pace designed to keep an audience hooked and entertained for hours on end. And entertaining is what Melora Hardin does best. Whether she’s gracing the small screen in a myriad of television roles or dazzling as a singer and songwriter, Hardin’s charisma and dedication to her craft always shines through. Impassioned with acting from a young age, perseverance and hard work has landed Hardin numerous roles and opportunities, including ISSUES, an upcoming pilot with Freeform inspired by the life of Cosmopolitan editor-in-chief Joanna Coles. Earning new roles left and right, Melora Hardin continues to dominate and turn heads, the true queen of the television screen.

ou must be fearless to cross national borders and travel unseen terrain with nothing more than a winning spirit, portfolio and smile. With hopes of captivating an audience, Russian-born Anastasia Baranova desired the taste of success regardless of her grasp on the English language. Beginning her career as a model in still Sovietcontrolled Moscow, Baranova and her mother eventually moved to the United States so she could pursue modeling and acting despite speaking almost no English. Using JumpStart computer games and working hard in school, Baranova mastered the language and broke into the entertainment world. With the stealth-like finesse of a warrior in battle, Baranova accomplished what she aimed to do by starring in a variety of roles on television series such as Scout’s Safari, Veronica Mars, and Joan of Arcadia. Her tenacity and infectious personality would lead to a golden record and a role as Addison “Addy” Carver on the ongoing Syfy series Z Nation, currently in its third season.

In the hit Syfy series, Addy is a caring, tenacious communications specialist— an interesting parallel to Baranova herself. With refined skill and cultured wisdom, Anastasia Baranova proves passion triumphs above all else. You’re a long way from Moscow. How has your journey benefited your career motivationally and spiritually? I think the biggest advantage of having my kind of upbringing—which in a lot of ways was unconventional and unstable because we moved around a lot—[is] it gave me the opportunity to see and experience different cultures and values in different places in the world. So my understanding of humans in life or the human experience is just “bigger.” When it comes to playing characters who I don’t necessarily relate to, I can draw on things that I’ve learned with this weird life that has taken me all over the world in a lot of ways. I’m curious to know what inspires your love for acting over modeling. (Laughter) You know the answer to this is not super logical! The Bodyguard, Pretty Woman and Dirty Dancing were the defining films of my childhood. I watched The Bodyguard and was like “Cool!! That’s what I’m gonna do with my life, that’s what I’m here for. I’m gonna be Whitney Houston!”

I was always really out there, and I got really lucky because my mother supported me… She put a lot of things on hold for herself. We moved from a different country, we moved from a different state, she took me to all my auditions. We’re very close… [She’s] an example of what it means to work really hard, the influence of not giving up… We’re Russian, so there’s not a lot of fault acknowledged (laughter). We don’t get stickers for spelling our name right, and a lot of the feedback maybe wasn’t what I wanted to hear, but what I needed to hear to grow. When did you have that initial “A-ha!” moment and feel you could do this professionally? It was either in an audition or in an acting class, but [it was] when I understood that I could make people laugh by being myself… It’s not difficult for me to be open, vulnerable, loud or really intimate with people right away. But definitely when I started making people laugh, I realized “Wait, this is actually really valuable. People are happy just because of something I’m doing,” which I thought was really cool.

grade, and right at the end of the school year [in Russia], my best friend’s mom shaved her head so her hair could be longer and thicker, and I didn’t want her to be alone, so I did it too. So I shaved my hair and immigrated to a new country! I was bald, thin and tall—I didn’t speak right away either—and I was pretty weird. I’ve been here a long time, and I’m still naturally weird (laughter). I definitely was not like anyone else. I learned English pretty quickly after the move to Minnesota. I went right to standard American English, and there definitely was an adjustment period. I still just won’t know something; [for example], I may not know a reference because I had to teach myself the American culture… I will say that my [English] world claim to fame is I missed only two grammar questions on my SATs, and I always really prided myself because I am foreign, but I had an incredible English teacher who had a real respect for the language… She wasn’t easy by any means, but you walked out like, “I just learned some shit!” You considered yourself lucky if you got her, and you definitely felt smart for having her for a year.

What were the challenges of not knowing how to speak English? I definitely was an outsider. I came to the United States the summer after second

this character calls for––I can live authentically and truthfully in this moment, therefore I can play the character. As you get each script, what are the things you look for that help you play Addy on Z Nation with increasing depth? The cool thing about Addy right from the beginning is she’s been the one who cares. From the jump she cared enough about herself and Mack [Thompson, Addy’s boyfriend,] to survive. She cared once she understood who [former convict Alvin Bernard] Murphy is and what that could mean for the future of Earth and humanity. This season, there are definitely a lot of things for her to care about and the biggest one is Lucy—Murphy’s daughter—who she and Doc go looking for in the middle of the season. They’ll spend the rest of the show tracking her down while all sorts of apocalyptic things are happening, and Murphy is off being Murphy (laughter). With each script I was always looking for what it is she cares about right now, particularly in regards to Lucy. The only reason I think you give so much of yourself towards anything is if you know the value, you know that it matters.

light by the American media, and I believe that Russia—for various reasons—falls under that category. I definitely have been selective about the Russian parts I play. They tend to be roles like a Russian sex trafficker or a stripper. We’re not all prostitutes! Then, there have been a few things where being Russian has been like a good thing because it makes me different and unique, but it’s been something that I’ve had to balance in a way and almost work against how Hollywood tries to portray [Russians] now. Did you find a technique to help you prepare for your auditions? What techniques can you share for future artists who want to hone their craft? I just read as much information as I can, if the script is available or the sides. At this point it’s pretty instinctual. It seems as if I am reading something, then I’m seeing it; I am seeing whether I make sense to play this person or not. I worked in casting for a while. I interned with a really incredible set of casting directors and learned so much about how casting really comes together. As an actor, it was information that wasn’t privy to me. You realize that you can do this role, [that] I have the emotional capacity to do whatever

How well do you collaborate with the directors? We are super fortunate with this show. Our showrunner Karl Schaefer has always been very open about the fact that [he] created these characters and gave them mental fallback, but [the actors] came in and really made these people people and gave them life. We’ve always had an incredible amount of room to adjust dialogue, wardrobe and makeup. [With] where the characters are going, it really has been a co-creation. Do you prefer comedy or more serious roles? I love… getting to be deep and emotional with somebody. There really is nothing like being with another actor who is fully committed, fully grounded, fully present—really in something with you. Comedy still has that instant gratification of somebody laughing and having a pleasant little moment because of something I did. It’s affecting someone instantly, and I did my job. “I know what I’m capable of; I am a soldier now, a warrior. I am someone to fear, not hunt.” -Pittacus Lore, The Rise of Nine. How does this quote apply to you? It’s beautiful. I think if you’re lucky everyone has one defining moment in their life, or a string of them. The world isn’t something I have to fight or get through. This world is really mine, and I can make whatever I want out of it. I certainly have had moments like that in my life, and that’s a perfect way to describe it.

“I HAVE THE EMOTIONAL CAPACITY TO DO WHATEVER THIS CHARACTER CALLS FOR. I CAN LIVE AUTHENTICALLY AND TRUTHFULLY IN THIS MOMENT, THEREFORE I CAN PLAY THE CHARACTER.” 58

DREAMIN’ OF A WHITE CHRISTMAS SDMT Brings Two Holiday Shows to Town By Tanzie Reynolds

C

an you hear the sleigh bells in the distance? The soft padding of reindeer feet on freshly fallen snow? The sound of Santa ho ho hoing as he slips down your chimney? The holiday season is approaching, and with it comes amazing annual theatre productions, the foremost of which are produced by the acclaimed San Diego Musical Theatre company (SDMT). Founded in 2006, SDMT has quickly risen to become a go-to company for standout musical productions—and part of what makes SDMT shine is their annual performance of White Christmas. For the last five years, SDMT has performed Irving Berlin’s musical White Christmas, a tale in which veterans Bob Wallace and Phil Davis follow a duo of beautiful singing sisters en route to their Christmas show at a Vermont lodge, which just happens to be owned by Bob and Phil’s former army commander. Funny and sweet, this is San Diego’s final chance to see White Christmas performed with SDMT at Spreckels Theatre, running from November 25th–December 4th. While White Christmas is coming to a close, SDMT has a burgeoning tradition in their midst: from December 1st–December 24th, the production company will be performing the heartwarming classic Miracle on 34th Street at the Horton Grand Theatre. Though both the venue and the production are new to SDMT’s repertoire, the famed local company is guaranteed to bring the iconic radio play to life in an unforgettable way. The company is newly adapting their version of Miracle on 34th Street from the radio play based on the 1947 film. We spoke with Colleen Kollar Smith—the Executive Director of SDMT and the director of Miracle on 34th Street— as well as writer Lance Arthur Smith—the man adapting the radio play into a stage production—about their two fresh and fun upcoming holiday shows.

members have been with the show since the first year, and each year it becomes a homecoming and reunion for our artists.

This is your fifth and final year producing White Christmas. What’s it been like for SDMT to produce this show for the last five years? Colleen Kollar Smith: White Christmas has delighted audiences during the holiday season over the past five years, but it has also been [a] great source of joy and pride for our staff, performers and musicians as well. Many of the cast

What makes Miracle on 34th Street stand out as a holiday production? Colleen Kollar Smith: Our creative team is working together to make this a total experience for the audience. From the moment you walk in the door, we want you to feel as though you’re walking into a 1947 Hollywood recording studio. We have an incredible cast of seven multi-talented performers—four of

This is your first year producing Miracle on 34th Street: A Live Musical Radio Broadcast. How did you choose to produce this radio play? Colleen Kollar Smith: At the Horton Grand, we wanted to create a new holiday tradition for our audiences by taking something familiar and putting a little twist on it. With Miracle on 34th Street, we are adapting the radio broadcast of the classic Academy Award-winning film, adding original music and fresh arrangements of favorite holiday tunes and creating an experience where our audience will feel like they are a key-player as the live studio audience. We are also working with the Horton Grand Hotel to offer special events for families in conjunction with the show, so finding a piece that would appeal to every generation was a priority in deciding what show to produce. Lance Arthur Smith, you are adapting the piece from the original broadcast; what’s it like adapting and working from source material? Lance Arthur Smith: This is a unique process in that I’m adapting a radio play—itself adapted from the motion picture screenplay—into a live theatrical musical. Using the original as a template, I’m able to utilize our talented actors and live foley artist to create something truly magical. Having Jon Lorenz (music and arrangements) as a collaborator invigorates and challenges me, as I’m a big fan of his music. The central theme of Miracle on 34th Street is belief—[belief ] in yourself, in your community and in the magic of the imagination. This was present in the original 1947 broadcast, and Colleen, Jon and I have made it the focus of this new version.

whom will voice dozens of characters. The entire soundscape— footsteps, door slams, the bustle of the NYC streets and rustle of Macy’s bags—will all be created by our foley artist live every night (applause and laughter courtesy of our audience). This is your first time performing at the Horton Grand Theatre; what’s it like transitioning into this new space? Colleen Kollar Smith: Moving into the Horton Grand allows SDMT to produce musicals downtown all year ‘round. We’ll continue to produce our Broadway Series at the Spreckels Theatre, and the new venue allows us to produce more intimate productions with longer runs. While this will be SDMT’s first production in the new space, the artistic team of Miracle on 34th Street has a strong history there, as Jon and I co-created the musical revue Mixtape which ran for over three years at the Horton Grand with Lance in the original cast. Why are the holiday shows important to the yearly lineup? Colleen Kollar Smith: Many of our subscribers were first

introduced to SDMT through our holiday productions. Since our shows are a great way to get into the holiday spirit and celebrate with a group, we see a lot of families, reunions and office parties. People who might not have heard of us get a taste and want to order the whole meal with a subscription. San Diego Musical Theatre’s recently announced 10th season includes their Broadway Series at Spreckels with classic shows such as 9 to 5, Damn Yankees and Billy Elliot, the last of which will be co-produced with California Ballet. While Miracle on 34th Street will be SDMT’s inaugural production at Horton Grand Theatre, the company will perform two other shows at the venue this season: First Date and Pump Up the Volume: A ‘90s Palooza. Subscriptions for the entire season are available now, as are tickets for the two holiday shows. Step into a winter wonderland and draw out the holiday spirit with the final production of White Christmas and the premiere production of Miracle on 34th Street.

FOR WHAT WE GIVE THANKS By Bob Morey

F

all is in the air… or the west coast version of it, anyway. The now shorter days are cooler than those of the previous month. November boasts national holidays that honor our veterans and encourage giving thanks—though it should be noted that both of these days came with a heavy price tag. November 11th is Veterans Day. At about 10:00 a.m., parades across the nation will take place to honor those who have served in America’s Armed Forces. Most businesses will close while Americans celebrate the decades-old tradition. In November of 1918, on the 11th day, in the 11th hour, at the 11th minute is when a ceasefire of World War I occurred. It was supposedly the war to end all wars—bloody, violent and filled with the tragic loss of American lives—but unfortunately, it wasn’t. Veterans Day as we now know it was first celebrated in 1919 when President Wilson proclaimed November 11th as the first commemoration of Armistice Day, a tradition that has lasted through the years. In 1938, by an act of congress, Armistice Day was reborn as Veterans Day. Thanksgiving is another holiday whose origins stemmed from tragic hardships. The tale espoused in grade school is that of the small ship, Mayflower, which departed from England and arrived at Plymouth Rock. The people on the ship came ashore and made friends with local Native Americans; this friendship—according to the youthful narrative—culminated in a huge feast. That’s the condensed Disney version of our history, minus Disney’s penchant for spontaneous song and dance. The true history is, as always, much darker. In September of 1620, Mayflower left Plymouth, England with 102 passengers onboard. These religious separatists were

seeking a new home sans persecution where they could freely practice their faith, lured by the promise of fortune and a fresh start in the fabled “New World.” While they initially landed in Cape Cod—north of their intended target—eventually, Mayflower entered the Massachusetts Bay and found a home at Plymouth Rock… in the midst of a dead-cold winter. Exposure and diseases killed many of the settlers; only 49 of the original 102 survived to see spring. Struggling to make it through the winter and ill-equipped for New England’s wide variety of seasons, the settlers were in trouble when various Native Americans made contact in March of 1621. Weakened by malnutrition and illness, these natives taught the settlers how to cultivate corn, catch fish and avoid poisonous foliage. An alliance was formed between the settlers and the Wampanoag tribe, which lasted for over 50 years. It was in November of 1621 that the settlers had their first successful corn harvest. The colony celebrated with a feast and invited a small group of their Native American allies to partake in the three day extravaganza. It was America’s first Thanksgiving, and though it was a time of joy, it came after a year of loss, pain and hardship. Both the veterans we celebrate at the beginning of November and the American history we commemorate near the end are filled with struggle and sorrow, but with bravery and perseverance too. We use November to honor those who are a part of our rich history, who fought and worked hard for the America we know and love. On these days, give thanks to our veterans and hold your family and friends close. We are grateful for those who came before us and have hope for what the future may hold.
