Benefit from International Exposure with our 681 Offices Worldwide Angela (Aiqi) Vander Klok was born in 1980 in China. After graduating from college in China, she went to Bremen, Germany to study. In 2006, she became a tour guide, traveling between China and Europe. She has great experience interacting with international clients. She has been living in the U.S since 2009. Her initial experience upon arrival in the U.S was very stressful as she had neither friends nor family in the U.S and most U.S companies would not recognize her college education or work experience from China. To survive, she applied for work at every Asian restaurant on Convoy Street in San Diego and secured a job as a waitress. While she was grateful to be working, she kept telling herself she could do better and pursued a job as a sales associate in a high-end retail store. In her first year of employment she was awarded for being the top producing salesperson. After achieving success in retail, she decided to become a realtor. Having dreams, setting goals, and working hard has resulted in great outcomes for her. She is motivated to explore what interests her and constantly push herself to pursue her dreams.

“THE MULSANNE SPEED IS FOR CUSTOMERS WHO DEMAND A CAR WITHOUT COMPROMISE TO EITHER LUXURY OR PERFORMANCE.”

ut before you settle in for a night at the opera, let’s set the stage a bit. The Mulsanne Speed is an upgraded version of the Mulsanne, launched by Bentley just two years ago, yet with a much more powerful and responsive engine beneath the aircraft carrier–sized hood. With a top speed of 190 mph, the Mulsanne Speed barely feels like it’s starting to get warmed up as you rush past 60 mph and soar rapidly toward the century mark. Assuming traffic laws allow, you will reach top speed easily, hardly noticing that you are going faster than any other luxury vehicle on the market. That’s because the handcrafted body and polished chrome interior are designed with comfort and quiet as top priorities. “The Mulsanne Speed is for customers who want a distinguished, elegant and exceptionally refined ultra–luxury limousine that also offers a dynamic and exciting driving experience,” explained Erin Bronner, Bentley communications manager. “The Mulsanne Speed

The Mulsanne Speed’s unique features include, clockwise from top left: electrically–operated tables; a frosted bottle cooler with champagne flutes; hand–stitched leather; and a 6.75–litre twin–turbo V8 engine.

32

is for customers who demand a car without compromise to either luxury or performance.” Named after the famous Le Mans racetrack corner in Monte Carlo, the Mulsanne Speed is a contrast in characters. A stately exterior, high–performance powerplant and luxurious cabin all lead to a truly unique blend of experiences. Bentley’s mighty 6.75–litre twin–turbo V8 engine propels the Mulsanne Speed to 60 mph in 4.8 seconds, while passengers enjoy contemporary exterior and interior styling features that define the Mulsanne Speed as a statement in quintessential British luxury. It’s truly a lion of an engine positioned within a very regal exterior. But that begs the question: Is the Mulsanne Speed meant for driving or for sitting in the back and enjoying the ride? The answer, of course, is both, depending upon one’s mood at the moment. Driving the Mulsanne is an experience in power and performance that one would not expect from such a classically vintage vehicle.

“The Mulsanne Speed is distinguished, calm and relaxing, but always with a connection to the road and relentless dynamic performance on demand,” said Wolfgang Durheimer, chairman and chief executive of Bentley Motors. “In this car, every journey becomes a drive.” Indeed, three suspension modes allow the ride to be as comfortable or sporty as one desires, and a custom mode choice gives the driver power to individually determine steering chassis and engine tuning preferences. But it’s not until you allow someone else to do the driving that one can truly appreciate the luxury and refinement that is the trademark of Bentley. The spacious rear cabin offers diamond quilted door panels and leather seats sporting embroidered Bentley emblems along with limousine–length leg room. Yet concealed beneath the exquisite materials that define the Mulsanne Speed cabin is a suite of technology to make any

journey as productive or relaxing as one desires. A 60 GB on–board hard drive can store the driver’s collection of music and films. Electrically–operated tables, with recesses and connections for iPads and matching keyboards, can be fitted to the rear of the front seats, while on–board Wi–Fi through a dedicated router keeps the car connected to the outside world. For refreshment, a frosted glass bottle cooler, complete with crystal champagne flutes, may be installed behind the rear armrest. A 2,200 watt premium audio system expands on the standard 14–speaker system and offers the best in–car sound experience in the world. Entertainment on the move can be provided through the Rear Seat Entertainment system, including two 8–inch screens and Bluetooth headphones. Available for a starting MSRP of $335,600, the Mulsanne Speed can be created and ordered through Bentley San Diego in La Jolla. Cheers to the road ahead! FINEsd.com • facebook.com/FINEmagazines

UNDERSTANDING THE WORLD OF AUTISM WITH PROFESSOR RALPH AXEL–MÜLLER BY SARAH MYERS

hances are, autism has already touched your life in some way. According to the National Autism Association, autism is the fastest– growing developmental disorder in the U.S. FINE Magazine’s upcoming 3rd Annual Amazing Lace Event benefits children with autism and their families throughout the many hurdles they must scale in their lifetimes. Ralph Axel–Müller, renowned professor at San Diego State University, is making waves in autism research with his Brain Development Imaging Lab, also known as the BDIL. The lab is dedicated to the study of brain development and its disorders, with specific focus on autism spectrum disorder. Professor Müller grew up in Germany and attended the University of Hamburg overseas, where he was a Guest Lecturer and Visiting Scholar at the Graduate School of Cognitive Science. He moved to San Diego 15 years ago, residing as an Associate Research Scientist with the Department of Cognitive Science at UCSD for 7 years before transitioning to his current role as Professor of the Department of Psychology at SDSU. With all of the outstanding institutes and research facilities that sunny San Diego County has to offer, Müller believes that San Diego is the best place for his research. But autism research has never been easy, and it’s certainly never been clear. Dr. Müller explains, “Ten years ago, scientists had come to the consensus that it is not one particular part of the brain that causes autism, but different parts that have contributed to abnormalities. Our lab has been the main driving force in debunking this.” While there has been much progress in autism research over the past few decades, there is still no definitive cause or cure for the illness. Müller’s years of experience in the field mean he understands the importance of continuing intensive research: “The prevalence has gone up in the last twenty years with more than one percent; now, 1 in every 68 babies develops autism.” Pinning down the root is incredibly difficult, not only because it’s spread across all age groups, but also because both hereditary and environmental factors are involved in finding the root cause. Because the rate of autism has increased tremendously, environmental factors play an important role in research, including toxins in our atmosphere that weren’t around fifty years ago. Outside elements have entered the puzzle. While researchers still have a long road ahead of them in finding a cause, they are hopeful. With new technological advancements, there’s optimistic hope placed in the ability to identify when autism

Professor Müller’s Brain Development Imaging Lab is helping families dealing with autism, even as it helps educate local students.

is present prior to the development of the disease—nip it in the bud, so to speak, explains Muller. Until then, exercise can do wonders for people suffering from autism. Studies have shown how physical activity is very effective for brain function in autistic humans. Surfers Healing, a non profit organization founded by surfer Izzy Paskowitz, is just one example of the many great services that have been created to help autistic children try things they never dreamed of before. This inspirational organization allows autistic children from around the world to get the opportunity to catch a wave and allows parents to catch a break. Whether autism has struck close to home or remains on the outskirts of your daily life, it is undoubtedly a cause we should all champion. FINE Magazine’s 3rd Annual Amazing Lace Event is a great way to become connected in your community and do your part to help in the fight against autism.

“WHILE THERE HAS BEEN MUCH PROGRESS IN AUTISM RESEARCH OVER THE PAST FEW DECADES, THERE IS STILL NO DEFINITIVE CAUSE OR CURE FOR THE ILLNESS.”

You’ve Got It! CREDIAUTO FINANCIAL, A RECOGNIZED LEADER IN AUTO FINANCING

B

BY C E L I A TAG H D I R I / P H OTO G R A P H Y BY DA N M O R A L E S

ack in 1991 in Tom Bean, Texas, a Mexican high– school student by the name of Rafael Gomez did not envision creating a profitable start–up company decades later in San Diego. But in 2012, Gomez launched Crediauto Financial, a finance company that assists individuals without credit history or with less– than–perfect credit to “have a piece of the American dream.” Under his astute guidance and skillful management, the company has established itself as a leader in automobile financing in Southern California. Gomez, founder, president and CEO of Crediauto, was inspired to launch his company after witnessing the credit system deprive many deserving people of the opportunity to finance a vehicle. Due

36

to lack of credit history, many are forced to settle for less than their dream car, or no car at all. “I simply wanted to assist franchise and independent licensed car dealerships to offer trustworthy individuals access to car financing and help them establish or improve their credit,” said Gomez. Gomez has successfully combined his wealth of business knowledge and experience to establish profitable companies throughout North America. He is no stranger to building profitable businesses. As CEO of Crediamigo in Mexico, he triumphantly turned this medium–sized, nonprime finance company into a large and successful financial institution, which he and his partners sold to EZ Corp. in 2012. Gomez is also president of Conlana Capital, a company he unveiled in 2014;

Conlana Capital extends nonprime personal loans via its website, where the underwriting and credit approval process, as well as the immediate electronic funding, are 100% automated. “It is all decided and electronically funded automatically by our proprietary system and credit approval algorithm, without the intervention of a single person,” said Gomez. “Some time in the future, we should expect to see the application of that technology to Crediauto Financial.” Gomez enjoys a diversified educational background and skills. After earning law degrees from UC Berkeley’s Boalt Hall School of Law and Universidad Iberoamericana in Mexico City, where he also studied Business Administration, Gomez practiced law at Latham & Watkins and is a former partner of Baker & McKenzie. He is licensed to practice law in the State of California and Mexico. In addition, Gomez is an alumnus of the Los Angeles College of Music and a professional studio and live drummer. Although several factors can be attributed to the success of Crediauto, Gomez primarily credits the kind, honest, hard-working, intelligent and problem-solving group of individuals that conform his team, including his business partner, Guillermo Velarde. Prior to teaming up with Gomez, Velarde was a successful attorney and president of a lucrative financial institution in his native Mexico.

Like Gomez, Velarde’s highest priority is client satisfaction. “With us, every client is a VIP who must be completely satisfied with our services,” said Velarde. “The kindness and intelligence of our team, our customer–friendly processes, service–oriented policies and our bilingual English/Spanish speaking staff have significantly contributed to our success.” According to Gomez and Velarde, roughly half of Crediauto’s clients are Hispanic, while the other half come from various backgrounds. Maintaining a bi-cultural mindset has been essential to their winning formula. The business partners share the same passion for their families, exotic cars, luxury watches and fine wines. They credit San Diego’s favorable climate, beautiful scenery and its large Hispanic population as a strong base for its market. “We can really make a difference here in San Diego. Also, the city is a great place to live and raise our families,” said Gomez. “Living and working in one corner of the country is the perfect starting point to spread our wings throughout the nation in an orderly fashion.” The two entrepreneurs continue to advance their illustrious careers and show no signs of slowing down. In the next three years, Gomez and Velarde plan on purchasing $100 million worth of nonprime auto financing receivables. FINEsd.com • facebook.com/FINEmagazines

Redefining Service

REAL EQUITY ADVISORS IS CHANGING THE BROKERAGE LANDSCAPE

H

BY KAREN WESTON

eadquartered in the historic village of Rancho Santa Fe, Real Equity Advisors is an independent residential real estate brokerage on a mission to redefine expectations of service in the luxury market. “There is significant pressure on the role of residential real estate brokers today,” says the firm’s president, Adam Roark. “My grandfather was a real estate agent and it’s amazing to look at the fundamental changes our industry has undergone since his time in the business… particularly with the constant inundation of information brought on by the internet.” “In my grandfather’s time, the crux of the challenge for realtors was to obtain information in a timely way and facilitate its flow to their clients. Today, information is everywhere. Our clients don’t need more data. The vital service of today’s broker is to assist clients in curating the mountain of information so they can focus their precious time on the right opportunities and execute. Furthermore, clients today, especially in luxury markets, benefit greatly from a brokerage that will not only connect them with a home, but with a lifestyle.” Enter the Real Equity Advisors team. The foundation of their operation is traditional in that it offers services to clients trying to sell or purchase a home, but their robust offering only begins here. “Oftentimes a client selling their home isn’t ready to purchase something immediately,” says Jamie Danielle, Sr. Vice President of the firm. “While it’s true we do apply a massive effort in preparing a home for sale and designing a marketing strategy far in advance of the actual listing, our work doesn’t end when the transaction is complete. We help our clients in every aspect of the transition out of their homes, from providing moving service referrals to locating and negotiating temporary leased housing as needed. We handle the big things like managing an escrow to ensure proper disclosure and timelines are met, but we also handle the little things, like calling utility companies on behalf of our clients or even returning cable boxes!” With Real Equity Advisors, the concept of “Redefining Service” is much more than just a slogan. They are constantly looking for new and innovative ways to deliver unprecedented value to their clients. An additional aspect of this commitment has been the recent hire of their Client Services Manager, Ashtynne Calvert. Ashtynne and her team are tasked with managing a number of luxury residences throughout Rancho Santa Fe and surrounding areas. “Many residents of Rancho Santa Fe only live here part of the year,” says Ashtynne. “Big homes on large parcels have the potential for equally big problems. Having someone local on call 24 hours a day to handle basic maintenance issues, coordinate vendors and communicate with neighbors helps our clients feel connected to their home, even when they can’t be physically here. Our fee–based home management service also helps our clients enjoy the lifestyle they want when they are in town. No task is too big or detail too small. Whether we’re coordinating floral arrangements or grocery deliveries, personal chefs, housekeepers, vehicle rentals or even pre–arranging logs in the fireplace, our singular goal is to be sure the client’s stay is memorable and leaves them looking forward to the next visit!” With long standing backgrounds in brokerage services, estate staffing and home management, the team at Real Equity Advisors is perfectly positioned to wow the most demanding clientele. Said Adam, “We aren’t content to do things the way everyone else has always done them, and our clients are thanking us for it!” Speaking to the team, their sincerity is clear. Looking at some significant deals they’ve put together in their inaugural year (including an $8 million sale turned management client) may be the best indicator that clients are indeed responding to the team’s mission. Looking ahead they’re not only excited to continue growing (they just acquired additional office space last month for more agents), but to continue to find even more ways to bring exceptional value to their clients and their community.

“WE HELP OUR CLIENTS IN EVERY ASPECT OF THE TRANSITION OUT OF THEIR HOMES, FROM PROVIDING MOVING SERVICE REFERRALS TO LOCATING AND NEGOTIATING TEMPORARY LEASED HOUSING AS NEEDED.” 38

GETTING YOUTH HOOKED ON A NATURAL HIGH BY WESLEY BROWN

s kids enter their pre–teen and teen years, academic and peer pressures can get the best of them. In addition to turning to drugs and alcohol as an escape, today’s teens are spending a lot of time on social media, where they may learn about unsafe behaviors or be cyber bullied. According to the Pew 2013 Teens and Technology survey, 78% of kids ages 12–17 own a cell phone and three–quarters of that group

say they access the internet regularly from cell phones or other mobile devices. The non–profit Natural High, based here in La Jolla, is helping millions of middle and high school students nationwide steer clear of the negative influences surrounding them, simply by encouraging them to pursue what they love. The organization is a leading voice in the national conversation about how to prevent youth substance misuse and educate kids about healthy alternatives. Entrepreneur and investment manager Jon Sundt founded Natural

(l-r) Students express their natural highs; Tony Hawk, Natural High ambassador and 2015 Honoree at Sept. 12th Natural High Gala; Tierney Sheehan (center) with fellow Natural High Club members at Poway High School; Natural High founder Jon Sundt.

High over 20 years ago after losing both of his brothers to drugs. “I don’t want any parent to go through what my parents went through,” John remembered. Inspired to provide as many kids as possible with an alternative to the path his siblings could not escape, Jon started delivering his message at local middle schools, armed with his slide projector and two pro surfers. His mission was to encourage the students to discover, amplify and pursue their passion so they had a tangible reason to say no to drugs and alcohol. Natural High now reaches eight million youth across all 50 states and aims to spark a generation of youth focused on pursuing their passions. The organization partners with over 40 celebrity ambassadors, from pro surfer Rob Machado to Grammy Award– winning band Switchfoot, San Diego Chargers Running Back Donald Brown and NBC’s The Voice winner Casadee Pope, who share their stories about what inspires them and the impact the choice to live drug–free has had on their success. These celebrity video interviews are paired with worksheets and discussion guides for educators and parents to ignite meaningful conversations with youth about their goals, values, role models, support networks and natural highs. Most notable, perhaps, is that these programs are all available online free of charge. Natural High invites youth to share their own stories on social media to inspire their peers and be a part of a living, breathing community. “It’s so important to focus on your skills and your talent and see how far that can take you,” said skateboarding legend Tony Hawk, a local favorite and longtime Natural High ambassador, who will be honored at the upcoming annual Natural High Gala on September 12th at the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa. Teens can also join the Natural High street team, volunteering to advocate for the cause among their peers and connec with other like–minded youth at festivals like Vans Warped Tour in cities nationwide and the Switchfoot Bro–Am surfing competition in Encinitas. The organization has recently been helping teens launch student clubs, starting in San Diego area schools. The passion–driven message serves as a powerful icebreaker for conversations amongst students who may feel disconnected. Yanet Ibarra just graduated from Rancho Buena Vista High School in Vista, CA; though she first hesitated to join, she eventually became the club president. “Once kids started

seeing their friends going to the meetings and liking it, they’ve been more open to joining in the various programs we run.” Another local student, Tierney Sheehan, founded a Natural High Student Club at Poway High School. Sheehan said, “Some think our club is an anti-drug group but it’s not. It’s a bunch of driven individuals supporting one another to follow their dreams.” Natural High has helped her realize that she can do anything she sets her mind to. Once a competitive swimmer, Sheehan is now exploring paddle boarding and developing her mentoring skills via the club. Ibarra and Sheehan have both designed club outreach activities to connect students and fundraisers to help those students without the financial means to buy equipment and supplies or pay for lessons to pursue their passions. Motivational speaker, comedian and neuro–psychologist Matt Bellace, a Natural High partner based in New Jersey, explains why Sundt and his team have been able to have such an impact: “For one, it’s the visual appeal of their celebrity videos that draws kids in, speaking directly to them in an authentic way. It’s a hard thing to achieve since teens nowadays are exposed to so much media. It’s not easy to stand out.” Yet, the key to their success goes beyond the branding and to the way Natural High has carried the conversation to the next level, to the positive alternatives available for youth to embrace. They are pioneering the national conversation about pursuing one’s passion, providing the antidote to one–off informational school assemblies and to the standard “just-say-no” approach from the 1980’s War on Drugs era. Instead of “just–say–no,” Natural High inspires youth to just say yes to their passions and doing what they love. From the start, Sundt knew that the only way to increase desired behaviors in kids was to help them identify those positive alternatives. 94% of youth who participated in the Natural High program reported they were indeed choosing to live substance–free and pursue their natural highs. Sundt’s vision for Natural High is to continue expanding the programs to support even more students, educators and caregivers in communities across the country. Natural High currently has programs in 271 middle and high schools across San Diego County. Equally as disappointing is the fact that even adults who never experienced acne as teens can experience something called “adult– onset acne.” Usually, adults require a more comprehensive and sensitive treatment for their acne. We are here to discuss your options so you can once again experience beautiful, clear and glowing skin. First, let’s start with the basics: What is adult acne? “Adults get acne,” stated Dr. Ali Lashgari of Advanced Dermatology and Cosmetic Surgery in Encinitas. “A lot of times people think that’s unusual or uncommon which is not true but adult acne is quite common.” Lashgari explains there are differences in the two types of acne. Teen acne is usually caused by hormonal changes at the onset of puberty and might be all over the face or in what is referred to as the T–Zone. The most common form of teen acne is comodonal acne, which includes both white heads and black heads. In adults, acne is typically around the mouth, chin and jaw line. Adult acne is primarily inflammatory or cystic, which are deeper lesions. Adult acne can also be related to hormonal changes and genetic disposition. Things like changing or eliminating your birth control pills can lead to adult acne, according to Lashgari.

Why I care about adult acne: As a teenager I rarely got acne, but when I entered my mid-twenties, my acne returned with a vengeance in the form of cystic acne. Acne has the ability to make any normal adult feel like a bashful pimply child—I thought all anyone saw when they looked at me was my bad skin. My acne began to consume my thoughts—it was all I could think about. No matter how great my skincare routine was, I couldn’t stop the cysts from popping up. “One of the other misconceptions is (poor) hygiene and that is usually not a contributing factor for acne,” said Lashgari. It doesn’t matter if you use the finest skin care products on the market, if you have a genetic pre–disposition for acne, you will get acne. I was in the dermatologists’ office weekly receiving the common treatment for cysts, a Cortisone shot in the nodule. I had finally reached my last straw when, shortly before my 24th birthday, my dermatologist suggested I try Spironolactone. Spironolactone is an anti–androgen, which means it blocks certain types of hormones in your system; the medication was originally a blood pressure pill but is now used to treat certain kinds of acne, such as cysts. For the first few months I didn’t notice a huge difference, but by month six, my skin cleared. Acne sounds like a trite and shallow thing to be worried about, but it can cause emotional duress and become a huge emotional and financial burden. While going through my struggle, I researched skincare thoroughly and, with the help of dermatologists, articles about skincare and trial and error, I learned what the best routine was for my skin. What do I need to change in my skincare routine? Depending on the type of skin and acne you have there are a few different things you should add to your routine. Lasghari explains there are 3 important aspects to a great routine. The first step is to cleanse with a facial wash that does not strip the natural oil on your skin, which you need to have proper balance. Make sure that every trace of make–up is off your skin before you go to bed as well. The second step one should take is to wear sunscreen every day— but make sure that your sunscreen is a physical sunscreen. Physical sunscreen is comprised of Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide. Dr. Lashgari says the chemical ones can be more irritating and they are also not as protective, and can actually cause more acne on your face. “If people use good sunscreen, again non-comedogenic types of sunscreen, it shouldn’t be a problem. Sun can actually contribute to

acne and cause inflammation in the skin,” said Lashgari. The third product that is important to add to your skin care routine is a great oil–free moisturizer. A moisturizer ensures that your skin is properly hydrated without adding extra oil. This should also be non–comedogenic. Other things you should know: There are a lot of other treatments out there, including laser and light treatments. These can be pricey, and sometimes don’t show the best results. Speaking with your dermatologist will unveil the best option for you. Dr. Lashgari says that he often uses lasers on younger patients whose parents do not want them on oral antibiotics, the common treatment for teens with acne. The kinds of light treatments that are shown to work, according to Lashgari, are the Blu–Light treatment and Photo–Dynamic Therapy— where a liquid is put on the skin for an hour and you sit under a light source. These can help reduce inflammation and oil production. Micro-dermabrasion is another option that can be helpful for the skin. “You don’t want to do things that can be too irritating, but in the right hands it can be helpful,” Dr. Lasghari noted. Peels can be another thing that dermatologists offer their patients. Glycolic Acid and Salicylic Acid Peels can be helpful, or Lactic Acid for people with darker skin. “I think there are better treatment options which are the oral medications, but if people don’t want to do that, or sometimes you can do these in combination with other treatments, it is a viable option,” said Dr. Lashgari. The oral treatments that Dr. Lasghari is talking about are antibiotics, which are commonly used in conjunction with topical treatments for adult acne. The other options are Spironolactone, Isotretinioin and birth control pills. The topical treatments can range from Aczone, a specially formulated adult acne gel, retinoid creams, topical antibiotics and a whole slew of others. The important thing to know is that, although this may all seem overwhelming, you will find your golden routine and your acne will eventually go away. The first step is to speak to a dermatologist; it is their job to treat your acne. Take it from me, when you are deep in the acne trenches, it might seem that there is no hope, but there is a light at the end of the tunnel. You will have acne–free and beautiful skin once again— just make sure to educate yourself on the topic and speak to a dermatologist before you start treating yourself.

JEAN DREAMS

KATHERINE DAOU’S DAOU DENIM CO. IS CALIFORNIAN TO THE CORE

A

BY M AT T H E W Z A M U D I O

merica’s infatuation with denim jeans goes back to the gold rush, when lusty men came to California from all corners of the world with high hopes of striking it rich. But when jeans were first created by Levi Strauss in 1873, they were a product of necessity rather than style and fashion, made to replace delicate garments worn by gold miners which ripped easily and dried slow. Since the birth of blue jeans, they have become a staple of American culture, earning a status within the fashion industry that has transformed them from worker’s wear to high–class clothing. With intense creativity and vision, designers like San Diego’s Katherine Daou—founder, CEO and creative director of Daou Denim Co.—are guiding jeans into their next phase: the high–end, contemporary and artistic, yet wearable, world of everyday fashion. While fashion often moves forward, it often, too, moves backward, and it is up to designers like Katherine Daou to either progress or regress the state of attire. With Daou Denim, Daou understands her pivotal position in the fashion sphere, vowing to create progressive denim jeans which are comfortable, contemporary and authentic. But before she was the founder of her own fashion label, Daou noticed a void in denim design while working in the contemporary denim market. She set out to show the world what jeans could be with the right creative leadership. In late 2013, Daou Denim Co. was born, and by 2014 Katherine Daou and her product developer went into sample production, creating the very substance that would propel her into the world of design. The rest is history. CONTINUED ON PAGE 46

The first collection of the California based denim label, released on July 30th (daoudenimco.com), offers five different types of denim jeans, all of which have their own style name. The first, called “Robin,” is a stretchy, dark wash ankle zip skinny jean that can be worn zipped or unzipped from the waist to the ankle, revealing a denim pattern insert. The second, called “Liz,” is a light grey relaxed skinny jean made of soft and stretchy denim, which can be easily rolled up at the ankle. The third, “Dany,” is a classic straight leg blue jean with characteristic leather accents that appear on every jean in the collection. The fourth, “Anna,” is Daou’s take on the seventies bootcut jean, described by her as, “really sleek” with its dark clean wash. And the fifth, androgynous “Joey,” is a black, distressed skinny jean and the designer’s favorite; Joey features a four button closure instead of a zipper and a slight flare at the end of the hem for optimal roll up. These five different styles of jeans are the beginning of a geologically specific stylistic endeavor by Daou Denim Co. as they strive to embody the coastal California spirit with their look, feel and aesthetic. With most of the collection having been created while Daou was living in central California near San Francisco, the influence of nature melded itself into the seams of of her clothing and the philosophy of her brand. She found inspiration in the sight of white fog rolling over lush green hills and tall redwoods protruding into the sky. It was in her central California seclusion that Katherine Daou was first able to begin drafting the look and feel of Daou Denim Co., and in this quiet beauty where she created a brand that reflects California in style, comfort and essence. In her exploration of the central coast, Daou stumbled upon a sophistication not often affiliated with the relaxed lifestyle of southerners, which further influenced her latest collection and brand. After visiting beautiful places like Big Sur, Carmel, Paso Robles and sumptuous Hearst Castle, the designer was so inspired by the elegant allure of these locations that she decided to incorporate real leather, bronze and gold details into her collection, bringing sophistication to relaxed denim. These accents can be seen on buttons, zippers and pockets, creating a stunning contrast against the blue, black, and grey washes. For a young designer like Katherine Daou, who’s only twenty–four years old, to be based in California, influenced by California and to produce all of her clothing in California, is an inspiring feat. Daou Denim Co. is a brand which is deeply rooted in our soil in order to create an authentically made product that is Californian to the bone. Though Daou Denim Co. is strictly a denim jean outfitter for now, the future holds endless possibilities for the budding company and its young captain. While this collection is the first by designer Katherine Daou, it’s certainly not the last; she plans to release a new collection every season, each drastically different from the last. Eventually, Daou plans on widening her brand to include jackets, tops and knitwear, while continuing to be, as she says, “inspired by this beautiful state we are so fortunate to live in!” Whether you’re in California, Missouri, or New York, when you put on a pair of Daou Denim Co.’s jeans, you’re bound to feel a little of that magic of the Golden State.

project; “In order to envision an overall design, I like to view the whole thing as a complex property, including architectural space, to really understand the home itself, as well as the wants of my clients and the way they live in the home.” This high level perspective allows Susan to stylistically work across a wide range of interiors; be it a sleek beach side retreat, a sprawling Spanish revival or an elegant Tuscan manor, Spath has a knack for merging all things timeless and classic with a decidedly current flair. Case in point; a recent remodel Susan did with Del Mar Country Club owner Madeleine Pickens. Situated with a stunning view of the golf course, Madeleine was initially drawn to the residence’s prime location and casual living floor plan. Having worked on multiple projects with her before, Mrs. Pickens brought Susan and her team on board to bring the home’s possibility to life. Upon first glance, the home possessed the proverbial “good bones,” but was suffering from dark and heavy spaces. Seeing past its dated interiors, Susan and Madeleine worked together to

brighten up the homes’ major living spaces, letting its location set the tone while opening the rooms to outside light. Operating with a motto to “let neutrals work for you,” Susan and her team worked with a complex neutral color palette, ranging from embellished creams, whites, and tans. Mixing this palette with a variety of textures throughout, the finished home presents as an interconnected series of calm, light rooms. Structural changes in the kitchen, master bath and dining areas brought a much–needed sense of space and cohesion to the floor plan. Keenly aware that the smallest changes bring the most dramatic results, removing stacked stones from the living room fireplace and updating the kitchen cabinetry gave the home the sleek, contemporary feel that has become the hallmark of our Southern California lifestyle. The project’s end result is a stark counter point to its beginnings. Full of open, bright spaces, Susan and Madeleine have brought a renewed life to the definition of country club life.

FINE MAGAZINE'S VINEYARD & WINE 2015

We Love What MAKING WINE IN SAN DIEGO COUNTY

he wild fires that swept through San Diego County in 2007 were devastating for many; property and homes were lost, thousands were displaced. But for one emerging field it was the start of what is now a full blown renaissance that continues to grow as fast as any industry in the county: the making of wine. Many of our local communities now feature tasting rooms and urban wineries and there are a breathtaking 100 wineries spread across the county. San Diego’s year–round warm, dry weather and multiple micro–climates across elevations provide a grower’s paradise. Hundreds of acres of new grapevines are planted every year—but not without risk. It takes five to seven years for a vine to reach the strength and maturity to produce usable grapes for wine, plus another year or two in aging before it’s bottled. The upfront cost and time commitment is staggering compared to most new businesses. Beyond the initial commitment, there is immense risk involved. From the fires we saw a few years ago, to animals scavenging your harvest, to disease infecting your crop, to extreme weather, the risks are endless. And if you make it through all that, the wine still might turn to vinegar in the barrel if it’s not handled correctly. If natural risks weren’t intimidating enough, wineries also have to navigate the harsh world of government. Our wineries operate under what are known as American Viticultural Areas or AVA; according to The Wine Institute, “American Viticultural Areas are to appellations of origin as grapes are to fruit. AVAs are delimited grapegrowing areas distinguishable by geographic, climatic and historic features, and the boundaries have been delineated in a petition filed and accepted by the federal government. In size, AVAs range from extremely small to extremely large. AVAs are one kind of appellation, but not all appellations are AVAs. An appellation can also be a political designation, such as the name of a country, a state or states, or a county or counties within a state.” As if that’s not enough, for the wineries operating in unincorporated areas of the county, the Boutique Winery Ordinance (which was founded with good intentions) is a confusing set of regulations and restrictions by which they must abide. In San Diego County, there are three AVA’s: The South Coast AVA, the San Pasqual Valley and the Ramona Valley, all of which operate differently depending on where the winery is located. As if that’s not enough, for the wineries operating in unincorporated areas of the county, the Boutique Winery Ordinance (which was founded with good intentions) is a confusing set of regulations and restrictions by which they must abide. Let’s not forget the Tobacco Taxation Bureau (TTB), which used to be part of the Department of Alcohol, Tobacco & Firearms, has to approve every label, there are zoning and square foot space restrictions if you hope to have an onsite tasting

54

FINEsd.com • facebook.com/FINEmagazines

They Squeeze! room, size requirements of the space you can have and restrictions on the size of tour bus that can stop at your tasting room. Wineries can’t consider offering food unless they can afford a Major Use Permit, which most can’t because they come with a hefty price tag— around $250,000. Along the way, there are more permits, codes and taxes. Talking with one of my urban winery friends about all of this, they said to me “I wake up every day and thank God we’re an urban winery and not a grower.” Sourcing is one of the most important issues to face for both growers and urban wineries. Urban wineries source all of their grapes; they are allowed to acquire as many tons as they as can afford, and don’t forget they, too, need to have the equipment for crushing, bottling and the space to store the casks for up to three years throughout the winemaking process. Growers, on the other hand, have additional restrictions. While they also have the same three year cycles, they are only allowed to source a percentage of what they can grow, and under the Boutique Wine Ordinance, 50% of sourced grapes must come from San Diego County. Say one of our wine makers has planted grapes for red wines, which do particularly well in their soil. But as guests drop by the tasting room, someone wants a white wine; since they have no white wine grapes, they have to source those to make a white so the guest is happy. It’s not just about making a white or red to keep people happy, it’s about making enough wine during the early years for the winery to keep their doors open and have enough wine to make it through the year. It’s not unheard of for a winery to have to close their doors because they run out of wine and have to wait until the next vintage is ready to be bottled. And remember, wine, unlike beer, is not something you can knock out in 30 days. As I traveled around our county over the last three months, much of this article was compiled during the many hours I spent with our wine makers while talking over a glass or two of wine; I came to realize many of them, as well as myself, share the same opinion: if the government would stop trying to help and simply allow the free marketplace to develop naturally, our wine makers would be far better off as a whole and the industry would expand as the demand for their wines does. The only thing that should be demanded of our wineries is truth in labeling: if you grow at your winery— great; if you source the grapes, just say so and where the grapes are from and again, enjoy it. As we celebrate California Wine Month throughout the month of September, consider our wine makers across the county; as they continue to grow and mature, making bolder wines with each passing year (and earning accolades and awards), please think about the risk and efforts they undertook to fulfill their personal passion to place that glass of wine before you. On the following pages, you can meet some of the people that bring you that wine. Some have been at it for a while, and others have just opened their doors. The one thing they all have in common is that they love what they do and it shows in their work, a feat not many of us can claim in our own lives.

FINE MAGAZINE'S VINEYARD & WINE 2015

rooking Vineyards is the first licensed estate winery in Vista since 1920. It was as much a passion for history as it was a love of fine wine that drove us to build a renaissance estate winery in the traditional style of this area and become a UC Davis Certified Winemaker. We want people to know what it was like to be here at the end of the 19th century enjoying the world famous wines that were being grown and produced in Vista. Much has been forgotten of San Diego County’s rich history of winemaking. Franciscan friars planted the first wine grapes in California in 1778 at Mission San Diego de Alcala. The friars made wine using a process developed by the British in the late 1600s, adding grape brandy to stop fermentation, thus retaining some of the natural sugars. This style of wine made at the missions became quite famous and was even a favorite of the King of Spain. Many old world wines are made using this style: Port in Portugal, Sherry in Spain, Madeira from the Madeira Islands, and the Vins doux naturels of France, to name a few. In California, this style of wine became known as Angelica. Only a half mile from the Brooking Vineyards estate was the most successful winery in San Diego County, producing 200,000 gallons of wine a year, before Prohibition relegated them to the pages of history. The reason for this success was the unique climate that Vista possesses; “Climate Capital of the World” was the motto. Vista has a Mediterranean climate with warm days and cool nights. At an elevation of 600 feet and with a view of the Pacific Ocean, Brooking Vineyards is just enough out of the coastal fog to help protect the grapes while still receiving cool onshore breezes. Historic varietals proved to make the most of this unique climate and winemaking method. Six years, seven gold medals, two best of shows, Winemaker of the Year at the 2014 San Diego County Fair and time in the barrel have made us ready to share this historic wine with you. Please make an appointment to come visit us and look for our Red Ribbon cutting coming this Fall. Sit back and sip the history. ighland Hills Winery features exclusively Ramona AVA wines produced in the McClellan family artisan winery. Most of the wines are estate grown; a few are vineyard–designated wines from selected neighboring vineyards. Every drop of wine is from premium Ramona AVA grapes and produced by Highland Hills Winery. Rich and Zoe McClellan moved to Ramona from the heart of the Sonoma Wine Country in 2005. They purchased a former race horse facility (with a Southern Mansion style house) specifically because the property was well–suited to agriculture. Rich and Zoe joined the Ramona Valley Vineyard Association and rapidly became convinced that Ramona had the potential to be a world–class wine region. Located on the West End of Ramona at an elevation of 1,400 feet, the vineyard features primarily Rhone varietals with an eclectic mix of interesting “experiments,” some even with pronounceable names. The main part of the vineyard was planted in 2007 by family and friends; the vineyard has expanded to seven acres—some as recently as spring 2015. The tasting room overlooks a wildlife preserve with a small lake. You may see a variety of raptors, including the nesting pair of bald eagles. In good weather, you can enjoy your wine and a picnic lunch on the patio—which is graced by historic Mission vines. The tasting room is air–conditioned for those warm summer days. Rich and son Matt do the winemaking, daughter Maggie and Matt’s wife Theresa run the tasting room. Grandchildren work in the vineyard and winery. The people who will pour your wine planted the vines, farm the vineyard, harvest the grapes, make the wine and operate the winery. Rich has been an amateur wine and beer maker since his teens. His winemaking career got started in earnest with a move to Sonoma County in 1980, where he found that he could purchase premium wine grapes. He followed up the “learning by doing” approach by completing the UC Davis Certificate in Winemaking in 2013. Highland Hills wines have won a variety of medals in local and national competitions.

2015 Line Defines Autumn Style

By Emily Glaser Marchesa’s distinctive couture looks first graced runways and red carpets eleven years ago, capturing the hearts and gracing the lithe bodies of celebrities like Blake Lively, Jennifer Lopez and Halle Berry. The designer’s signature embellished gowns always garner praise and accolades, but the Fall 2015 Line, unveiled during February’s Fashion Week, is definitive of this season’s fashions. From Victorian silhouettes to flouncy feathers, every one of fall’s preeminent trends can be found in the delicate folds of Marchesa’s dresses.

Time–Turners

This fall, embrace the spirit of decades past. High, laced collars and lengthy lines of buttons bring to mind Victorian fashions, while delicately plunging necklines and tasseled skirts, paired with soft, wavy bobs, harken back to the risque ‘20s. Choose an era and build your fall look around it.

On the Fringe

Fall fashion’s favorite accessory: fringe. Marchesa’s take is flirty and feminine: dresses edged with layers of feathery, sparkly fringe; but this look belongs everywhere. Look for suede pieces, like jackets and satchels, with fringed bottoms and casual cotton tops and skirts lined with the trend. If all else fails, follow Marchesa’s lead and go full–on glam.

Fully Charged By Bob Morey

AN INTERVIEW WITH THE CHARGERS Malcolm Floyd

S

eptember marks the start of the NFL season and fans will flock to the stadiums and gather around TV’s in homes and Sports Lounges across America. In San Diego we are no different, for the next four months and hopefully longer, we will live week by week, win by win or loss by loss until the last game is played. In early August just as training camp was getting under way, I paid a visit to Charger Park and caught up with a couple of your favorite players, Malcolm Floyd and Danny Woodhead, and the newest member in the back field who we all have high hopes for, Melvin Gordon.

11th Season - Wide Receiver - Wyoming Fine Magazine: Back in 2004 you caught your first TD reception that was also Philip Rivers first TD pass. You’re both are going on 11 seasons together now, can you tell about what’s been like as one of the longest tandems together in the NFL. Floyd: It’s been awesome, just like thinking back at it. It’s kind of sad, you know, about where it’s leading to but at the same time we’re just trying to take advantage of it here, this year and just trying to make the most of it. It’s been awesome, he’s been a great great role

model, for me and the team, and I’ve been really blessed to have had him as a leader. So what happened to that ball? I got it. (Both laugh.) This is the last year on your current contract, there’s been some hints of you’ll retire. You think we might see you being in a Chargers uniform for another year or two? I doubt it. I think this has been in the plans since I signed this contract. I’m satisfied with the way my career’s gone. But it would be a lot better if I could just get a championship.

Last season was a career high year for you, everything seemed to click. How’s it looking so far through camp this year? It feels good. I feel a lot better this year. I’m really doing a lot of extra stuff, I’m trying to be there for my teammates too as well as making myself better on the field and off the field for them. So that’s my main focus this year, just going all in and being there for my teammates, because you never know when it’s going to be your last play, I still gotta finish this year before anything. I really want to do something great for my teammates and have them live on the legacy of what we passed down to them. Photography Courtesy of the San Diego Chargers

Danny Woodhead splits the defenders in the 2014 Charger home opener with a 30-21 win over the Super Bowl Champions Seattle Seahawks.

Danny Woodhead 8th Season - Running Back – Chadron State Fine Magazine: You had a remarkable college career. How was transitioning from college to NFL for you? Woohead: There’s obviously a transition in everything, every level that you go from high school, college to NFL. The transition went even smoother than I expected just because I was going from a small division 2 school, you think it’s going to be just crazy. It takes time to get adjusted to the speed….and there’s definitely a speed difference, maybe that’s playing for it the worse. But, I think the mental side of the game is the biggest change.

surprise as any. But what’s cool is that how some of the fans have embraced me and obviously that one was a surprise. I’ve heard this year that you have taken Kyle Emannuel under your wing. He’s an old family friend and he’s coming into his rookie season here, how is he coming along? I think as me being on the offensive and him being on the defensive, it’s hard to see everything that’s going on. But it seems like the transitions went well. He’s a good kid; a hard worker and hopefully he can help us out this year.sure these players share the same passion for the team, and for the city, as we do.

Melvin Gordon

2013 you can in here and sort of became a jack of all trades, kind of a go to guy. Then you had a personal best season, quickly became very popular with the fans and just how different was that playing for the patriots? Playing for the Patriots everyone noticed [you] just being in Boston and it being a very big market for the Patriots. So that helped things out once I transitioned here and had a big year. I’ve been fortunate; the fans here have been great to me. I’ve been very very blessed with the teammates around me, the staff and just the whole organization so it made the transition very smooth.

Rookie – Running Back – Wisconsin

And how surprising was it see Anne Hathaway sport your jersey one day? (laughs) That might have been as big of a

You have been here about six months, how do you like the city so far? It’s good, it’s good. I try to get out when I can.

Fine Magazine: You’ve had a remarkable year after having a record setting college career, and being drafted number one by the Chargers. How do you like it so far and how is the transition going. Gordon: The transitions’ been good. We got a great group of guys offensively and defensively, and I like to compete. So you go to those guys for help and anything else you want to follow up on. San Diego as a whole has been great as well as my teammates.

Go to the beach, it’s real relaxing here. You’ve been a huge learning curve, how is it different from the NFL to College? Everything’s a lot faster, protections, running the routes, the reads when you run plays. Everything is just a lot faster and the guys are a lot stronger. You’re having a very positive online trend right now, you’re being compared to a running back that came here years ago named LT, what do you say? I don’t think about it too much. I can never be LT, there’s only one LT, and there will only be one LT. I can just be Melvin Gordon, and I want to be good, I want to be great. I just come out here and work We have a lot of guys that are pushing me to the limit every day, and I follow behind some good leaders like Melvin Ingraham and Phillip [Rivers], and guys like that who know how to go about their business, and I’ll be where I want to be. With attitude like these players are showing already, it leaves no doubt this team is ready to strike and give us a season we’ll be talking about for years. We have a good mix of experience and youth across the depth charts and as long as we can avoid key losses to injuries, we should be looking at one of the best teams the Chargers have fielded in recent years. As we the fans Bolt Up in Charge Blue, there will be little in our focus for the next four months except maybe next January. FINEsd.com • facebook.com/FINEmagazines

Little Eatery in Little Italy SCRATCH COOKING SHINES AT CIVICO 1845 SAN DIEGO

BY MERILEE KERN, “THE LUXE LIST” EXECUTIVE EDITOR PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF KAREN MORRISON

If you wander down India Street in San Diego’s Little Italy neighborhood, you’re likely to notice a bustling neighborhood addition: Civico 1845 restaurant. This quaint, rustic–chic eatery is a breath of fresh air relative to the plethora of Italian dining options surrounding it. What truly sets this eatery apart is its vehemently authentic and hand–crafted approach to Southern Italian cuisine.

From the truly Italian dishes, to the rustic–chic interior, to the carefully selected team, Civico 1845 is Little Italy’s newest—and truest—gem.

“L

ike Mama used to make, with modern flair,” is the guiding philosophy restaurant owners (and brothers) Dario and Pietro Gallo literally bring to the table. Civico 1845 (pronounced CHEE-vee-ko) serves up quintessential regional classics with a contemporary sensibility dedicated to the use of farm–fresh seasonal and sustainable ingredients along with specialty victuals native to (or principally used throughout) Southern Italy. The restaurant’s commitment to scratch– cooked staples like pastas, breads and desserts will make you feel like you’re eating one of “Mama’s” home–cooked meals. The restaurant’s Southern Italian orientation comes from Dario and Pietro themselves, who were born and raised in Cosenza, Italy—a city located in the southern region of Calabria. I recently visited Civico 1845 and had the pleasure of interviewing Dario who, in addition to being co–owner, is also the general manager. He underscored the restaurant’s unfussy au naturale approach, noting that it “avoids using fats and artificial elements to ‘enhance’ flavors. In every dish here at Civico 1845, you can taste the natural flavors of each ingredient we use.” In addition to cooking with locally–grown and seasonal ingredients, the restaurant also only utilizes wild–caught seafood and grass–fed meats. Pietro, who additionally serves as the restaurant’s kitchen manager, also commented on the origin of the eatery’s old–fashioned approach and adherence to proper technique, stating, “Our mother used to cook tomatoes for three hours to get the taste just right. That is the standard we desire to live up to.” While the restaurant is certainly steeped in tradition, certain aspects of the menu take a more modern turn, like the availability of gluten–free pasta substitutions as well as a completely vegan menu dedicated to maintaining exacting vegan standards—not something normally seen in Italian cuisine. This ancillary menu option stems, in part, from co–owner Pietro’s own veganism. He notes, “Most people read ‘marinara sauce’ and think tomatoes, which are vegan friendly. What they don’t realize is that the sauce is often made with butter, which is not vegan at all. We’re working with a number of vendors to make sure that our vegan menu is absolutely, 100 percent vegan.” All combined, the result for Civico 1845 is spot–on Southern Italian fare that is not only made from scratch, but also boasts top– quality natural, fresh and seasonal ingredients across the board. When looking for the right chef to execute their vision, the brothers struck culinary gold. Dario elaborated, “It was important for us to find an experienced, Southern Italian chef. We are lucky to have Alfonso Pisacane as our head chef. His family has owned and operated Le Tre Sorelle, a traditional Italian restaurant in Positano, Italy, for over three generations. He also spent the last 10 years working as a chef in North County San Diego, Orange County and Los Angeles.” Dario continued, commenting on some of Chef Pisacane’s creations that have become Civico 1845’s signature dishes. “Our Scialatielli Civico is one of our most popular dishes with handmade Calabrian chili pasta, Caledonian prawns, cherry tomatoes and wild rocket (arugula). The Casareccie alla Norcina is also a signature dish, one that I think really represents who we are as a restaurant—both the pasta and the fennel sausage are homemade. We also top the dish with ricotta dumplings, black truffles and Parmigiano–Reggiano.” When asked about his own favorites on

the menu, Dario indicated his go–to appetizer is the mixed board of Prosciutto and Formaggi—guest’s choice of varied meat and cheese options like mortadella, capicollo, gorgonzola dolce and sottocenere, all served with a caramelized walnuts and fig marmalade. Having dined at Civico 1845 for dinner, I have a few of my own favorites. Paramount among these is the Burrata Heirloom Caprese—a velvety mozzarella and cream spread served with heirloom tomatoes, cold pressed extra virgin olive oil, wild arugula and black lava salt all drizzled with a vibrant balsamic vinaigrette. The Calamari Fritti was also a winner due to its delicate, flaky and well–seasoned batter, and the fact that it was lightly fried just to crisp up the exterior rather than overcook or outright conceal the flavor of the seafood within. Traditional Arrabiata and garlicky aioli sauce sides were welcome but not mandatory enhancements. Entrée–wise, my personal pasta penchant is the Pappardelle Brasato. While the savory slow–braised, cabernet–flavored short rib ragù rife with aromatic herbs is an utter delight unto itself, the large flat ribbons of Pappardelle pasta—cooked to al dente perfection—stole the show. Obligatory shavings of hard Parmigiano-Reggiano complete this righteous recipe. In regards to seafood, I’m partial to the Scallops with Meyer lemon—a conceptually simple dish where the freshness and caliber of the ingredients and culinary execution shine. Well–seasoned, seared and cooked to a medium–rare, the oceanic essence of the scallops is aptly accented, not hindered. The pairing of painstakingly caramelized and doughy black garlic gnocchi with this tender, mild protein is apropos. For dessert, you just can’t go wrong with Civico 1845’s Cannoli—not just one but two large cheese–filled pastries with crunchy pistachio tips served atop an impossibly rich dark chocolate sauce. Also on the traditional treat front, this restaurant’s rendition of espresso and mascarpone cheese–laden Tiramisu will duly satisfy your Italian sweet tooth. For his part, Dario digs the Zeppole—filled Neapolitan doughnuts with vanilla cream and Italian Amarena cherry. Food aside, any discussion of Civico 1845 would be incomplete without a mention of both its location and the décor. When asked why Little Italy is the ideal spot for the restaurant (besides the obvious), Dario answered, “After getting to know the neighborhood, we thought that it could really use a more modern Italian concept and realized that it would be the best place to showcase our authenticity. Tastes are changing—more people have traveled to Italy and can appreciate and recognize an authentic Italian restaurant.” It’s certainly not easy for an Italian eatery to carve out a niche among a veritable sea of other Italian restaurants, but this Civico 1845 has done quite successfully. My own Wednesday night visit was proof positive. Even at nine o’clock in the evening, when most restaurants would be starting to clear out, there was nary an open table available in the lively and laughter–filled dining room. Speaking of the dining room, the restaurant has a light, bright and open concept floor plan that creates a relaxed and communal ambience. This is further enhanced with a casual but thoughtful interior design rife with reclaimed materials and natural, living elements—all a perfect complement to the eatery’s culinary inclinations. “I really enjoy the overall vibe of our restaurant,” Dario said. “We have a young, fun staff who are great at getting to know our guests and neighbors…everyone feels like family.” And that’s apparently what it’s all about for the brothers. “We want guests to feel like they are dining in our home in Italy, experiencing our family’s traditions and home cooking.”

Chef Leroy wanted to share one of his favorite recipes: lamb and scallops. Ingredients for lamb: 2 (8–rib) frenched racks of lamb (each rack 1 1/2 lbs.), trimmed of all but a thin layer of fat 1 1/2 tsp salt 3/4 tsp black pepper 1 tsp vegetable oil For herb coating: 1/2 head new garlic or 3 large regular garlic cloves, minced 1/4 cup finely chopped fresh flat–leaf parsley 1 tbsp finely chopped fresh thyme 2 tsp finely chopped fresh rosemary 1/2 tsp salt 1/2 tsp black pepper 1 1/2 tbsp extra–virgin olive oil Brown lamb: Heat a dry 12–inch heavy skillet over high heat until hot, at least 2 minutes. Meanwhile, pat lamb dry and rub meat all over with salt and pepper. Add oil to hot skillet, then brown racks, in 2 batches if necessary, on all sides (not ends), about 10 minutes per batch. Transfer racks to a small (13x9-inch) roasting pan. Coat and roast lamb: Put oven rack in middle position and preheat oven to 350°F. Stir together garlic, herbs, salt, pepper, and oil. Coat meaty parts of lamb with herb mixture, pressing to help adhere. Roast 15 minutes, then cover lamb loosely with foil and roast until thermometer inserted diagonally into center of meat registers 120°F, 5 to 10 minutes more. Let stand, covered, 10 minutes (Internal temperature will rise to 125 to 130°F for medium–rare while lamb stands). Ingredients for scallops: 3 tbsp garlic, minced 2 tbsp lemon juice 3/4 cup butter 2 pounds large scallops Salt and pepper to taste Heat a pan over a medium heat and melt butter. Add the minced garlic for one minute, until fragrant; add the scallops and cook for a few minutes on the first side so they are about halfway cooked. Turn the scallops and finish cooking until they are firm and opaque. Put the scallops aside to a plate and add the lemon juice to the hot butter and garlic in the pan. Season to taste. Drizzle scallops with lemon reduction, top with lemon zest and serve.

A Fresh Start

EVERYTHING’S COMING UP NEW AT SAN DIEGO OPERA BY ERICA MINER

new General Director at the helm. A fresh season, replete with beloved favorites and a groundbreaking premiere. Recitals by operatic greats, including a season–opening recital by one of opera’s hottest new tenors. San Diego Opera (sdopera.com) continues to intrigue opera mavens with its exciting, forward–looking agenda. From the moment newly–minted General Director David Bennett arrived at his office on June 15th, the SDO atmosphere became ebullient. His mere presence seems to evoke cheerfulness and optimism from the staff. He is the emblem, not only of the season to come, but also of a vision that looks confidently toward the future. When I first met with Bennett, I was immediately struck by his keen intelligence, boundless enthusiasm, affable and genuine manner and ability to express his ideas articulately. He was quick to emphasize how impressed he has been with the tireless work of the opera staff. “In absence of a General Director last year they did an amazing job,” says Bennett. “(COO) Keith Fisher jumped in and led the company in a beautiful way. The staff learned to feel a sense of empowerment in what they’re doing. I think they all are feeling creatively engaged.” Aside from endless meetings with the board, the press, the San Diego Arts Commission and even the Consul General of Mexico, how has Bennett fared in his first few weeks with the company?

“Much of the work focused on preparing for the Annual Membership Meeting on June 29th,” Bennett said. “Making sure we were closing the fiscal year as soundly as possible… doing everything we could to continually raise money and solidify some gifts that were still outstanding. But also trying to clarify what’s definitive versus what we think things are going to look like down the pike.” Bennett described a new look for 2016–17. “The season will be split as opposed to back–to–back... an October main stage production, a January–February production and late April production.” He plans to intersperse those with more than just the recitals SDO is presenting this season and to explore a broader collaboration with the San Diego Symphony, figuring out the business model for a co–production of a concert opera at Copley Hall. “We’d both sell it, share the expenses and in some way share the revenue… Something family friendly, that might happen in December as part of their holiday programming.” Making decisions about how to reduce the budget down to what is needed is another of the company’s major goals. “Our work is not finished,” says Board of Directors President Carol Lazier, who has continually expressed her appreciation at each and every contribution from the San Diego community. Lazier, whose generous gift helped jump–start the campaign to save SDO, hopes the new “Stand for SD Opera” fundraising campaign will help the company sustain their successful efforts over the last year and contribute toward the future. As of July 4th, approximately $1,700,000 of their $2.1 million goal had

been raised. Clearly the community remains passionately devoted to SDO’s continued existence. In May of 2016, SDO will present the San Diego premiere of a new Jake Heggie opera, Great Scott, in which the composer explores the music of the past while contrasting it with today’s music of popular culture. Based on the original story by Terrence McNally and directed by former Old Globe Artistic Director Jack O’Brien, the all–star cast features baritone Nathan Gunn, soprano Isabel Leonard and mezzo-soprano icon Frederica von Stade. Other productions include Puccini favorites Tosca and Madama Butterfly on the main stage at the Civic Theatre and recitals by Ferruccio Furlanetto, Patricia Racette and hot new tenor René Barbera at the Balboa Theatre. Barbera, who wowed audiences and critics at SDO’s 50th Anniversary Celebration Concert in April, will kick off the new season with his September North American Recital debut singing opera, zarzuela and art songs. “I am quite excited about being a part of David Bennett’s first season with SDO,” says Barbera. “I have heard nothing but good things about his track record and am hoping this will be the beginning of a long relationship with SDO for the both of us.” Bennett’s creative innovation seems limitless. In addition to works aimed specifically at San Diego’s Latino, African–American and military communities, Bennett is exploring a Chicago Lyric Opera production written for and meant to be performed in a zoo. “We want to start conversations with the San Diego Zoo to see if that might be a way to celebrate their 100th anniversary in 2016.” That sounds like the vision of a new, forward–looking opera company: one that not only fits squarely into the 21st century, but also has earned a lasting place at the heart of the cultural life of America’s Finest City. “We still have a lot of work to do, clearly,” Bennett says, “But I’m not daunted, which is a good way to begin.”

ART & SOCIETY

t’s that time of year again, when many families get to squeeze in that long–awaited vacation before the dreaded school year begins. Then our kids get a case of the “back–to–school blues.” But what if going back to school meant returning to your passions? As many of you know, I am big on the performing arts and music being part of any K–12 educational curriculum. Over the years, as budgets have been slashed in those areas in our schools, the San Diego Unified School District (SDUSD) has created two magnet schools with core programs that are dedicated to the arts. The San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts (SCPA) in Paradise Hills offers programs for grades 6 through 12. Opening in 1978 on the grounds of the Roosevelt Middle School, SCPA started as a school within a school with just 1 administrator, 17 teachers, 1 counselor and 17 support staff for the 180 students in grades 4 through 6. 7th & 8th grade classes were added over the next year and in 1982 SCPA graduated its first class. The school bounced around the area a couple of times, but was so popular and successful that a new permanent campus was built for it in 1990. SCPA is now home to over 1,500 students with 72 teachers and staff of 78 to support them. The school offers an annual artistic season of dance, choral and instrumental concerts, art exhibitions, musical theatre and dramatic productions. SCPA has a 500–seat theatre, 6 dance studios, a TV studio, art and music rooms, a library, as well as traditional academic classrooms with computer and science labs. If the South Bay is too far, the SDUSD has another public magnet school program in Clairemont, the Creative, Performing and Media Arts Middle School (CPMA). CPMA is smaller then its cross–town counterpart, offering classes from just grades 4 through 6. Their program focuses on specialized training in the creative, performing and media arts. The integrated curriculum allows students to develop artistic and technical skills while meeting demanding academic standards. If these schools don’t meet your needs, San Diego County boasts a great number of charter schools that offer high education standards while tailoring a program to fit the creative path your child wishes to pursue. Whatever you choose, our schools are making a valiant effort to ensure that the arts will not be lost to our students and that somewhere the right program for them is readily available. In our May issue, I wrote about our beloved Speckles Organ and “The Drive To 5000” campaign. In May, just 96 pipes were left to reach the 5,000 pipe goal. I’m proud of you San Diego! As of June 22nd, the last four remaining pipes were purchased and when these latest pipes are installed the mighty Speckles Organ will once again reclaim its title as the World’s Largest Outdoor Organ. Well done San Diego and a big thanks to the Speckles Organ Society for bringing this all together!

“WHATEVER YOU CHOOSE, OUR SCHOOLS ARE MAKING A VALIANT EFFORT TO ENSURE THAT THE ARTS WILL NOT BE LOST TO OUR STUDENTS AND THAT SOMEWHERE THE RIGHT PROGRAM FOR THEM IS READILY AVAILABLE.” 82
