CELEBRITY PROFILE BY MIKHALA HAILE
A SUPREME SUPERHERO SYDNEY VIENGLUANG AIMS TO SAVE THE WORLD FROM ZOMBIES ON Z NATION
From crunching numbers to slaying zombies, sometimes your career can take an unexpected turn. Such is true for up-andcoming actress Sydney Viengluang. With a degree in International Business and a Masters in Economics, Viengluang originally foresaw herself running a studio and working behind the camera every day. Instead, Viengluang is breaking into the acting business and making a name for herself on screen. (CONTINUED...)

Front & Center CELEBRITY PROFILE
urrently, actress Sydney Viengluang plays Dr. Sun Mei on SyFy’s resident zombie-based series Z Nation. Logical, intelligent and determined to help others, Dr. Sun Mei is perhaps the key to saving the world on the SyFy cult series. She plays a researcher from Laos who survived the original zombie outbreak and took shelter in the Forbidden City in Beijing. Using her brains and quick-wit, Dr. Sun Mei has the weight of the world on her shoulders—the survivors of the zombie outbreak look to her for both a vaccine for the ZN1 (zombie) virus and (hopefully) an eventual cure. Below, actress Sydney Viengluang explains the importance of Dr. Sun Mei, her personal background working in Hollywood and her dream acting role. What can you tell us about Dr. Sun Mei and how she’s about to save the world? My character is sent by the last remaining survivors of Pan Asia as Asia’s last hope. I first get introduced with the Pan-Asian forces as an antagonist to find and capture Murphy in order to collect his blood and create a vaccine to bring back to the Forbidden City. My team ends up getting killed, and I’m the sole survivor, which leads me to join Operation Bitemark as their resident doctor.

In many of your roles, you’re trying to solve a problem with the world, playing characters from Dr. Sun in Z Nation to guest roles as FBI and police officers in Jane the Virgin and Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders. Are these your favorite types of roles? I would say I have a natural inclination to be a leader and solve problems. I guess that comes from being the eldest of three and having a type-A personality, so strong roles tend to come easier for me. You worked as an accountant for a movie studio and learned the ins and outs of the business. How has this helped your acting career? Does it make acting easier because you know what is expected from producers and writers? Yes, knowing the behind the scenes of how the business side works definitely works in my favor. I’ve learned that there are so many factors in getting cast that it makes it a bit easier to not take it personally when I don’t get a part. There are so many moving parts in making a TV show or movie that the only thing you can really control is how much work you put into a character and audition—you just have to leave the rest up to the universe. You’re also a producer (The Letter, 2016). Is there a difference between being behind the camera instead of in front of it? Yes, [while] a producer you’re wearing many hats and making sure the whole production is going smoothly, from set dressing to directing. As an actor, I get to focus solely on my performance, so that’s nice. I enjoy both since they require different skill sets. Finally, what’s your dream role? I kind of already am playing my dream role. Sun Mei is smart, strong, multi-dimensional and has her own mission... I don’t think there’s a dream role; I just love playing multi-faceted characters, which aren’t frequently written for Asian-American women. As for now, I’m focused on advancing my acting career, booking more strong roles and positively representing the Asian-American community as a whole in 2017. Z Nation recently wrapped its third season. The series is currently available on Netflix and on DVD, with season 4 tentatively scheduled to bow in fall of 2017.

FASHION BY MIKHALA HAILE
WINTER WEAR
KEEP WARM THIS WINTER WITH COZY FASHION San Diego doesn’t get snow or sleet—the East Coast’s blizzard conditions are an infamous struggle we don’t have to face— but the icy chill of winter inevitably blows across the holiday season every year. While San Diegans don’t have to bundle up in wool hats and fur gloves to stay warm, haute winter wear is still necessary this January. Heat your winter in style this year with stunning new fashions for both men and women sure to keep you warm through the coldest of chills.
SWEATERS
For Men: “Lambswool” Biker Pullover, $135, available at scotch-soda.com.
Soft-washed for comfortable touch and wear, Scotch and Soda’s Lambswool Pullover can be paired with black denim and a chambray button-up shirt underneath. Made for the stylish man, this sweater comes in two colors: camel and moonrock melange. For Women: “Twirl Around” Poncho, $168, freepeople.com.
Cozy and with a relaxed fit, this stylish poncho comes in both charcoal and oatmeal. Pair this gorgeous sweater with leather leggings or taupe over-the-knee boots and a long-
sleeve shirt underneath to turn heads and let people know ponchos never go out of style.
BOOTS

For Women: “Tieland” Boot, $798, available at stuartweitzman.com.
These over-the-knee boots have a block heel for comfort and come in five colors,
including walnut, black, blue, slate and taupe. Though these leg-lengthening Stuart
Weitzman boots are a little pricey, you can’t beat a good boot with a comfortable heel.

Not only does this jacket have a ’70s vibe, it also features leather inserts and a sheepskin
collar. Lightweight for comfort and durability, this jacket is natural and versatile for men. For Women: “Tatie” Jacket, $1975, available at moncler.com.

Home & Style FASHION
Where did your love of fashion and dressing alike come from? Our passion for fashion started at a very young age. When we were kids, we loved watching fashion shows. Afterwards, we would raid our mom’s closet and try on her clothing, handbags and high heels, [as if] we were as glamorous as the models. Like most twins, our parents began dressing us in matching clothing at an early age. We thought it was fun, and since our taste in fashion is similar, continuing to dress alike felt natural to us. Being twins has always been a source of pride for us, and we enjoy reflecting that by creating matching styles. At times, does it get frustrating or overwhelming being twin sisters who blog together? As is the case with most siblings, we have our fair share of arguments, but they never last very long. While being twins and spending a lot of time together is natural for us, we each enjoy our own personal lives as well.
“We don’t take ourselves too seriously, so in addition to writing with an eye for fashion, we try to view things from a humorous perspective.” 30

What sets you apart from other twins who blog? We don’t just write about fashion—we also blog about things like beauty, current events, news, travel and tips for everyday life. We don’t take ourselves too seriously, so in addition to writing with an eye for fashion, we try to view things from a humorous perspective. Also, the fact that we are from a small northern country, [Finland], where the total population is less than the city where we now live—L.A.—provides us with a unique world view. How would you describe your own personal style? Though similar, there are definitely unique aspects in each of our [separate] personal styles. For example, Nita tends to wear lighter tones like ivory, beige and rose, while Nina enjoys shades like gold, silver and red. For the latest in trends and for those with fashion fever, you can follow this unique duo on Instagram @ninanitatwins. View their fashion blog at ninanita.com.

KEEPING CLEAN
FAMILY-OWNED OHANA SOAPS CREATES HEALTHY SKIN n a country focused on healthy eating and organic foods, there is a surprising lack of attention on using healthy products. There’s a nationwide focus on what goes in the body, but most people neglect what goes on their bodies— namely, what goes on the skin. The skin is the largest organ in the human body. It’s the thick coat that protects us from disease and the elements—so why shouldn’t we take extra measures to keep our skin fresh and healthy?

Health & Beauty SKINCARE
How did you get involved in the bath and body industry? Susan Gresowski: I found that when using commercially-made soaps, when the weather changed, my husband’s skin would be dry and itchy… I created the Lavender Geranium soap—I added shea butter, avocado oil, sweet almond oil, vitamin E and jojoba for their skin nourishing properties. My husband enjoyed it so much that I started making more... a lot more. We now have more than 40 different types of soaps and 34 other bath and body products that are available on our online store. You handcraft all of your products. What’s the process like? SG: Our naturally-processed soap is made by mixing different oils with lye, causing it to saponify—violà, you have soap. Each oil adds a different characteristic. Some add amazing moisture, others cause the lather to be creamy or bubbly, others make the bar harder. When you make soap, it produces glycerin in the soap that is a natural humectant. A humectant pulls moisture from the air, leaving your skin soft and moist. When coupled with quality ingredients formulated to be gentle, you get a superior product that is good for your skin. We never use animal fats in the making of our soaps. Tell me about the different scents, herbs and extracts you use, and what are some of the health benefits? SG: In our Active Charcoal soap, we add hardwood charcoal, Mediterranean sea salt and essential oils. Charcoal is wonderful for removing impurities, while sea salts are moisturizing and full of minerals that are beneficial to the skin and help with healing. In our Avocado Peppermint
soap, we add fresh pureed California avocados and peppermint essential oil. Kasey Gresowski: Our Lavender Geranium soap uses essential oils to help calm and heal the skin. If a soap is made with a fragrance, we only use phthalate-free. [Phthalates] are a group of chemicals, most commonly diethyl phthalate, or DEP. DEP’s known risks for human health include reproductive disorders, allergies and cancer. All of the fragrances we use, when there is not an essential oil blend available, are phthalate-free. Unfortunately, this is not the case with all handcrafted and commercial products. 36

What should people keep in mind when it comes to bath and body products? SG: Always remember that your skin is porous and absorbent. It absorbs whatever it comes in contact with, much the same as sticking something in your mouth. KG: Store-bought soaps, beauty bars, etc. are engineered to create the need for you to buy store-bought lotions and creams that contain glycerin, but also contain harmful ingredients, so instead of buying one product from the store, you now need to buy two or more products to serve the same purpose… thus increasing the commercial company’s profit. That’s great for
companies but bad for you and the environment. Where can people find you? KG: You can always find us at local farmers markets in Rancho Santa Fe on Sundays and at the Oceanside Night Market on Thursdays. Or [find us] online at OhanaSoaps.com SG: In farmers markets, [people] are overjoyed to talk to the person who makes their food, prepares their soaps [and]sews their clothes. It creates a village-like atmosphere, a connectivity to the things we bring into our homes, and promotes healthier attitudes, healthier environments and healthier families.

ONE BAR AT A TIME PHIVEBAR OFFERS UNIQUE HEALTH BENEFITS
ome-cooked meals are supposed to be the healthy cornerstone of modern life, but we’ve all had days where cooking is just too much work. Whether it’s first thing in the morning as we’re rushing out the door or right after a hearty workout at the gym, grabbing a quick Poptart or Powerbar is sometimes the easier alternative. But these foods are filled with sugars and artificial ingredients that can make your energy spike, then abruptly crash. Instead of reaching for a processed bar, aim for something healthier, something that includes natural ingredients, like PHIVEbar. This all-natural, purpose-driven superfood bar currently comes in three flavors—original, blueberry and peanut—and includes wholesome ingredients like dates, raisins, prunes, figs, sesame seeds, sunflower seeds, quinoa, almonds and more. The bars are certified organic and feature no artificial ingredients. They’re non-GMO and gluten-free—even better, there’s no sugar added. Featuring nutritious ingredients from start to finish, PHIVEbar is a welcome substitution for the sugared granola bars packing supermarket shelves. PHIVEbar is the brainchild of former NFL quarterback and San Diego local Kyle Boller and his wife, the former Miss California Carrie Prejean. The pair were inspired to start their own health-centered company after Prejean’s father underwent a scary battle with stage 4 base of tongue cancer. “We had a holistic healer come into our lives,” Boller explains, “and he introduced us to a whole food diet. Within about four and a half months, the tumor on my father-in-law’s neck was completely gone.” It was a miracle in the making, and it changed the course of Boller and Prejean’s lifestyle. “We started to learn more about how whole foods work within the body,” Boller adds. “[The holistic healer] told us about a fruit-nut-seed recipe he had discovered while traveling the world… We started eating it as a family and noticed the benefits.” From there, PHIVEbar was born as Boller and Prejean began to spread their unique superfood product throughout the community. Health and fitness has always been a part of Boller and Prejean’s lifestyles, so it’s hardly a surprise that their latest 38

career steps have been aimed at spreading healthy habits. “I’ve been doing pageants for my whole adult life,” Prejean says, “I had trainers and nutrition coaches, but I never really understood the meaning of food until we really started to educate ourselves… [Kyle and I] were both health-conscious, but eating healthy to us was not eating Taco Bell for a couple of months. We never understood why.” Now, Boller and Prejean make sure their diets are centered around feeling fit and energized, something PHIVEbar mirrors; the bars are nutrient rich, provide a digestive boost and (most importantly) are filled with stable fuel for the body. “The fruits in our bars—the dates, the figs, the prunes— those are all good sugars for your body that give you sustained energy,” Prejean says. “They don’t give you the peaks and valleys of fake sugars. There’s no crashing with our bar—you feel full, energized, satisfied… You feel great eating our bar.” So what’s next for PHIVEbar? “We do have another flavor that will hopefully be launching in 2017, though I can’t tell you what it is yet,” Boller coyly hints, “but we’re changing the world one bar at a time.” PHIVEbar is currently sold in local grocery and health food stores such as Sprouts, Jimbo’s, Frazier Farms and Equinox. BEYOND THE KNIFE
AN INTERVIEW WITH DR. JAMES CHAO M.D. F.A.C.S., PLASTIC SURGEON
Let’s start at the beginning. Tell me about your career in a nutshell. I studied at Stanford and then NYU School of Medicine. I also trained at Institute Kaplan in Spain for a bit. In addition to teaching in the Division of Plastic Surgery at UCSD, I’ve been practicing for over 22 years at 2 locations in San Diego. I also speak at various conventions across the country. That’s a full plate! And your brother is a doctor as well. Have you ever worked together? We operate in different fields so we don’t work together professionally, but we co-founded San Diego Sports Medicine Foundation 16 years ago. We collaborate often on behalf of that organization. Your annual event Taste of The Cove is notorious for being a great time. (laughs) Thanks. I guess you can’t go wrong when you have Charger players and great food. The best part of the annual Taste of The Cove event in La Jolla is that in the 14 years that we’ve been running it, we’ve been able to fund over $2 million in free surgeries and health

12 years, I’ve been working with Fresh Start Surgical Gifts, which has allowed me to conduct over 100 free surgeries. What is your most common surgery? In my practice, Breast Augmentation is definitely high on the list. It’s such a pivotal point of confidence for my clients. Really, the transformation is more than aesthetic, and my team has a reputation for excelling at it. We are also known for reconstructive surgery, hernias, mommy makeovers and, most notably, I specialize in micro-surgical reconstruction, which includes hand surgery and breast reconstruction. This specialization allows me to reconstruct and improve just about any part of the body with replacement parts. It’s highly rewarding because it allows me to be creative. Some days, I’m challenged with taking a leg bone and carving it into a jawbone. Other days, I take belly and turn it into breast.
care to under-privileged children who’ve been hurt in sports. This has, in turn, helped these kids get college scholarships.
What attracted you to plastic surgery? Some think that plastic surgery is a field that is “purely aesthetic,” but what we do changes lives, and that has always attracted me. When people feel confident and look their best, it brings out their best self.
And you’ve received quite a few accolades in the industry over the years. In 2008, you were named a “Health Hero” by the San Diego County Combined Health Agencies. How did that one come about? That was a great honor. For the last

A Passion
for Painting ROCKSTAR RALPH RIECKERMANN TRADES HIS BASS FOR ‘BRUSHES By Jess Yacovelle
When Ralph Rieckermann left Germany after his schooling and immigrated to the United States, he never would have guessed that one day he’d be the bass player for international sensation Scorpions. Through a bit of luck, personal struggle and endless talent, Rieckermann soared to new heights as an enviable rockstar and has maintained a strong presence and career even upon exiting the Scorpions roster. From classic musician to celebrated rockstar, from film composer to unique DJ, Ralph Rieckermann has excelled in the creative arts throughout his life. Now, Rieckermann is taking his renowned creativity to new heights as he delves into the world of painting and fine arts. (CONTINUED...)

hile he initially studied classical music at an esteemed conservatory in Germany, Ralph Rieckermann rose to fame in 1991 when he joined the world-famous rock band Scorpions as their new bass player. The now-classic German rock band originally formed in 1965 in Hanover, eventually finding extreme success stateside. According to Rieckermann his lifechanging chance with Scorpions came at a time when he desperately needed it. Feeling alone and down on his luck as a recent immigrant to the United States, Rieckermann received a phone call that would forever change his life. “A friend of mine called me and said, ‘The band Scorpions is hiring a bass player, and you’re the 60

perfect guy,’” Rieckermann says, amusement coloring his voice. “I hung up the phone because I was asleep—it was 2 in the morning. I said, ‘Dude, call me later, I’m not in the mood.’ He called me back and screamed in my ear: ‘Are you f***ing crazy? They’re one of the biggest bands in the world!’” Recognizing the importance of such an opportunity, Rieckermann was quick to send an audition tape. Though he was confident in his own skills as a bassist, he was initially skeptical about his chances playing for the Scorpions. “They said they’d fly me to Germany and I’d meet the band. We played about 6 or 7 songs… after about an hour, they were super rude to me—they said I had to go because they had a business meeting—and they didn’t even ask for my number. I went back to Los Angeles.” While Rieckermann may have
assumed he’d been passed over, he quickly found out he was wrong. “About a month later I had a message [saying] that the Scorpions wanted me to play on their new single, and [then] that I was the new bassist,” he explains. “They never auditioned or even talked to anybody other than me.” Rieckermann continued to play with the Scorpions until 2004. Since leaving the band, he’s found success composing scores for feature films. “I studied classical music in Germany,” Rieckermann offers. “I’m very good… One day, a friend asked if I wanted to score Lancelot: Guardian of Time, and I said ‘Why not?’” he explains. “By now, I’ve done film scoring and acting in about 42 films.” While Rieckermann’s talent for composing new music is immense, he’s since found a new passion in life, one that
allows him to further his creative drive in a new, tangible manner: painting. The former prolific rockstar creates detailed pieces teeming with vibrant colors and bold themes across the canvas. Rieckermann’s paintings are unique and burgeoning with character, but unlike his history with music, Rieckermann never received formal artistic training. “About 3 years ago, I was working on a movie with Sharon Stone [What About Love, out 2017],” Rieckermann recalls. I was sick and tired of looking at computer monitors. I was really bored—I was like a girl. I wanted to go out and shop, and look at something other than computers and music. I ended up at an art store. There were all these cameras and all these paints. I’d never painted before, and I thought, ‘Why not try painting?’” ( CONTINUED...)

The phrase “why not?” has guided a number of Rieckermann’s career moves, and it’s paid off; since 2013, Rieckermann has produced over 200 paintings, and he has no intention of slowing down. “[Painting has] became a passion of mine. From that day on, I became obsessed.” From realism to abstract art, Rieckermann finds solace in painting. His true standout style, however, is pop art. Filled with an array of bright colors, blended tones and unique shapes, Rieckermann’s pop art paintings provide more and more nuanced details the longer you look. Picking apart intricate details is a staple of Rieckermann’s work. As he notes, “It’s just like making music. I’m a visionary, and I like to improvise. I live in the moment and come up with new ideas—that’s how I compose music. I come up with a baseline, and more and more gets added to it and [then] I come up with a story.” For more information about Ralph Rieckermann’s one-of-a-kind paintings, visit ralphsart.com.

West is the Best LOCAL CARLSBAD FARM SERVES THE FARM TO TABLE TREND
new year brings new goals and lifestyle decisions to the forefront of everyone’s mind. One way many seek personal improvement is through altering their diet to include more natural, locally-grown foods. While it’s easy to select local or organic fruits and vegetables at your neighborhood supermarket, finding delicious crops grown in a sustainable and healthy way at a restaurant or nearby eatery isn’t that simple. Sure, your favorite neighborhood joint may have delicious salads, but where exactly is the food coming from? How was it grown? In the modern day of mass-produced farming, these questions matter. Sustainability and a focus on flavor and nutrients are key to producing healthy, viable crops, and no one exemplifies this better than West Farm. Sustainability and natural growing techniques are embedded into West Farm’s DNA. Located a few miles away from West Village in Carlsbad, West Farm is a quaint three acres of fresh produce heaven owned by the prolific West family. The farm provides some freshly-grown fruits and veggies for restaurant West Steak and Seafood, but the majority of their produce is delivered daily to Bistro West, the upscale-casual restaurant beside the West Inn in Carlsbad. Bistro West is a family-friendly, authentic farm-to-table restaurant serving comfort foods with a hint of Asian flair. The restaurant features a varied 70

menu that evolves with the seasons, including everything from pizzas baked in a stone hearth oven to Shanghai-style short ribs. The Bistro West menu is designed by Executive Chef John Miller and based around the locally-produced fruits, vegetables and herbs grown at West Farm. The farm is run by Raul Castillo, an seasoned farmer with experience growing clean crops from natural soil. According to Castillo, soil is everything when it comes to produce—a good soil can either make or break crops. “Being a soil geek, I recognize that in order for food to taste good and [possess] nutritional value, you want the best soil,” Castillo says. Nowadays, most farms rely on an abundance of fertilizers and additives to produce large, bursting crops for profit, but Castillo argues that’s not the best way to work. “We don’t want just fertilizer—the people I’ve studied under call that ‘moron farming’ because you keep putting more on and more on and more on. If you have healthy soil, you have healthy and tasty food without an abundance of fertilizer.” One indicator of soil health, oddly enough, are the different weeds that grow near the crops. While it may be the instinct of some farmers and growers to toss away weeds without a second glance, weeds are actually a great indicator for the viability of crops. Explains Castillo, “We keep our weeds down, but weeds are an indication of what the soil needs and what can grow. [Weeds show] whether the soil is high on phosphorus, calcium, etc. For example, we want to grow blueberries out here, so I have to create an environment (CONTINUED...)

where there is acidity in the soil, and the weeds will tell us if that acidity is missing. Soil always needs a balance.” It’s through examining the soil and surrounding weeds that quality farmers can determine how to best adjust and perfect their crops into the mouthwatering meals we love and enjoy. Though West Farm does its best to provide high-quality fruits, vegetables and herbs in bulk, Castillo admits that there’s only so much you can grow on three acres. “We try to incorporate our produce into the menu, but with 300 prepped items every day, [Bistro West] can’t get all of our produce from West Farm. Other produce is supplemented by local purveyors,” Castillo acknowledges. However, West Farm still works closely with the restaurant to create their seasonal menu. “This is a quaint three acres, so we can focus on our artistry. It’s more about focus and incorporating [West Farm crops] into the meals. For example, we have a fresh catch of the day on the menu. The chefs will get a fresh fish and decide how to prepare it, incorporating West Farm herbs and vegetables into the dish.” Currently, Bistro West features freshly grown herbs and crops from West Farm, including mint, cilantro, thyme, micro greens, kale, beets, parsnips, cauliflower, brussels sprouts, leeks, passion fruit and more. Though their menu features some year-round favorites (such as beef stroganoff and chicken pot pie), Bistro West’s menu is flexible and ever-changing with the seasons due to the strong relationship between Executive Chef John Miller and farmer Raul Castillo. Says Castillo, “John [Miller] has been out here, which is exciting. John wants to have his hands in absolutely everything.” Miller has made numerous requests of West Farm, including ensuring the existance of some perennial favorites. “Brussels sprouts are high in cost [to buy], and we need them because they’re on the menu,” Castillo explains. “Chef John Miller has also asked for kale and chard. We use edible flowers in a lot of our food as a garnish. We grow lettuce and root crops, like turnips, carrots and beets. Those are always on the menu, so we want to keep that going.” The menu at Bistro West and the farm itself work in tandem to develop delicious dishes from fresh fruits and vegetables, with neither lording supreme over the other. The growing process is a delicate dance between Castillo and Miller—the farmer and the chef—because one cannot successfully exist without the other. Agrees Castillo, “Farmer-chef communication is clutch. We’re lucky to work so well together.” And by working well together, West Farm and Bistro West help to make sustainable, nutritious, high-quality eating a reality in their Carlsbad locale. 72

ENDLESS SUMMER
Before you can step inside the newest watering hole that’s been shaking up the sleepy beach town of Carlsbad Village since September, you can feel the grin sliding across your face. Yes, the curb appeal of new hotspot Campfire is stunning, but that’s not why your smile beckons. A waft of nostalgia hits you on the street and takes you back to that communal circle of your youth around the campfire. The mesquite scent in the air causing you to reminisce is courtesy of the 12-foot hearth known as Grace––just one of the sources of open flame that celebrity chef Andrew Bachelier (of Addison and Cucina Enoteca fame) uses to create his ever-changing menu of seasonal fare. Inside, Campfire has transformed 6,000 square feet from an old auto-body shop into a summer camper’s dream. Long, communal tables anchor the expansive space with an inlaid wood art installation evoking a mountain pass flanking the wall. Properly lined picnic baskets, buoys and fishing poles divide the space, hinting at the menu’s staples: fresh fish flown in daily and produce straight from the vine. (CONTINUED...)

Outside, tree stump benches circle a fire pit, while tables line the patio under a rustic pergola set against a galvanized steel siding—repurposed from Camp Pendelton’s Marine Base. But the showstopper is the Oregon-made custom teepee. Filled with books, toys and large Fat Boy bean bag chairs, it perfectly portrays the spirit of Campfire restaurant: community. Kids in tow or not, it’s hard to resist hopping inside and taking in a little wilderness respite while you wait for your smoked salmon grilled cheese sandwich to finish roasting. Campfire is the first solo project of owner John Resnick, who reigns from the Consortium Holdings collection. CH boasts local faves Ironside Fish and Oyster as well as Craft and Commerce, both similarly featuring fresh, local menu selections and a crazy handcrafted cocktail game; Campfire’s bar offerings follow suit. The refreshing Aloe Black features tequila, aloe vera, violette, cucumber and lemon shaken. Nothing is safe from the flame—even the garnishes get thrown into the fire. The Grilled Pineapple, for example, marries the flavors of pineapple roasted on an open flame with white rum, coconut and lime juice. If you’re feeling a tad less adventurous, order the Rosé. When it appears on your table more a l’orange than rose-tinted, fret not; it is pure provencal countryside in a glass. With a warm, nostalgic atmosphere and an upscale, expertly crafted menu, the result is undeniable: summer camp has never been better. 76

WINE D’VINE BY WALDEN FAMILY SERVICES
PHOTOS COURTESY OF JADE COAST PHOTOGRAPHY; STORY BY GRACE MERCY Walden Family Services (Walden) honored longtime champions Harley and Maryanne Sefton with the inaugural Fostering Hearts Legacy Award during Wine D’Vine, which attracted a soldout crowd of 350 business and community leaders and raised over $675,000 for the nonprofit’s foster care, adoption and parent training programs. The award honors individuals who have made a lasting commitment to ensure that children and youth in foster care have loving families and opportunities to become vibrant, productive members of the community. In honor of Walden’s 40th anniversary, the evening also featured an unforgettable concert with rock legend John Fogerty, the former lead singer and lead guitarist of Creedence Clearwater Revival, who got the room up and dancing with classic hits including “Bad Moon Rising,” “Proud Mary” and “Have You Ever Seen the Rain.”

THING
BY BOB MOREY
IT’S ’17… IF YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN With a countdown from ten, a drop of the ball and hugs and kisses all around, 2016 went out and ’17 came roaring in. One thing 2017 is already marked by? Massive changes—not just for San Diego, but for the entire country. On January 20th, you’ll stop discussing President Obama and start referring to President Donald J. Trump. Whether you love him, hate him or are somewhere in the middle, it doesn’t take a crystal ball to predict that the Trump administration is going to be far different from the Obama regime of the last eight years. The voters were all over the place in the last election, proving California exists in its own alternate universe. On November 8th, California voted to uphold the death penalty (under which no one has been executed for 30 years) while at the same time releasing non-violent felons early upon a thorough case review. California residents voted to ban plastic bags at stores, to tax cigarettes higher in the hopes that smokers will quit and to legalize recreational marijuana for anyone over 21. Keep in mind, California has had legalized medical marijuana since 1996 under Proposition 215. California is getting tougher on legal gun owners who buy ammunition for their firearms by creating a new tier of background checks accompanied by more fees. But here, in San Diego, the most important topic of all is if the beloved San Diego Chargers are going to stay or go. There have been many fingers pointing back and forth over the past 15 years in regards to the stadium shenanigans, but there can no longer be any doubt as to where San Diego voters stand. Tax payers firmly rejected both Measures C and D, which would have given the Chargers firm incentive to stay in town. Now that the voters have spoken, it seems neither the mayor’s office or the Chargers are listening to what the citizens/taxpayers/fans are saying on the issue. We do not want a downtown stadium where there is no parking, no tailgating and too much traffic already, and San Diegans certainly don’t want to pay for it. Many of us think we have a great stadium in a great location right now, though it needs some work—well, a lot of work. The refurbished, former Jack Murphy Stadium is iconic to San Diego. With its post-modern design, Qualcomm has become a part of our social fabric; it’s where we saw games with our parents and now take our children in San Diego tradition. As a personal note to both the city officials and to the Chargers, the Cubs owner Joe Rickets is about to complete a multi-phase and multi-year remodeling of Wrigley Field. We have seen other cities remodel rather than rebuild, and that is likely the best plan for San Diego. Remember: the bait must suit the fish and not the fisherman. Qualcomm, with its vast history in Mission Valley, is the bait we want—that, and a team we can take pride in. 82
