s a true San Diegan, if there’s one thing I look forward to every single year it’s Opening Day at the Del Mar Racetrack. I spend the months leading up to the races picking out the perfect dress, heels and, of course, the perfect hat. In a miraculous twist of fate, Opening Day always greets us with sunshine and warm breezes, June Gloom a forgotten relic of the past. I don my Turf Club best and head to the track, where the world seems to buzz with excitement; its a blur of color, laughter and high stakes.

Opening Day doesn’t just symbolize the beginning of the race season- it’s the iconic starting line of summer. From that day forward, the next few months are filled with fun in the sun; hiking the dry mountains, relaxing on the white sands of our beaches, or just enjoying a cocktail outside in your backyard, from sunup to sundown we’re outdoors. This is our season, San Diego—get out there and enjoy it!

here’s something about summer that initiates the call of the wild for families all across America. School’s out, corporate vacations begin and the open road beckons, bringing the possibility of adventure to explorers of all ages. But sometimes that road can be closed, or overly congested, making the desire to get out of town a little more trying as families set out for fun on the summertime trail. CONTINUED ON PAGE 32

That’s why the folks at GoRVing.com (www.GORVing.com), the premiere resource for Recreational Vehicle (RV) travelers, have designed the perfect solution to overcoming gridlock: Destination RV Delivery. Just choose the location that you want to visit, and chances are there is an RV rental company in the vicinity that will deliver a luxurious, fully equipped, mini–mansion on wheels directly to that spot, all set up and ready for your arrival. It’s called glamour camping, or “glamping” for short, and it’s becoming increasingly popular among families who want to make the most out of their vacation time together. “Quite a lot of our customers use our RV delivery service, especially in the summertime,” said Samantha Elliot, office manager at San Diego Ultimate RV rentals (www.SDURV.com) . “Most of them are coming from across California, Nevada or Arizona, and they prefer to fly or drive in and have an RV all set up for them when they arrive.” These luxurious RVs feature all the amenities of a well–appointed home, including gourmet kitchens, stoves, ovens and microwaves, washers and dryers, big–screen televisions, fireplaces and plush, comfortable furniture. Renters can purchase kitchen utensils, bed linens and towels to come with the delivery or bring their own to enhance that home–away–from–home comfort and familiarity. Of course, the beauty of RV vacations is that you can go just about anywhere you want, exploring the many state and national parks across the nation, while spending quality time with the family in the comfort of your own home on wheels. RVs have the space to accommodate gear for activities of all kinds, like biking, hiking, fishing, horseback riding, off–road toys, and can be easily rigged for

handicap accessibility, making them perfect for cross–generational family vacations. Even the family dog is welcome to come along when you are vacationing in an RV. Available in all shapes and sizes, RVs can be the type that you tow behind your truck or SUV, or you can go with a model that is motorized and driven from within the well–appointed cab. Tent campers offer the unique feeling of camping outdoors, yet with an RV–base that provides a kitchen area as well as sleeping bunks. Many RVs come with trailer hitches to bring along a car for extra–curricular excursions, and there’s always room for bikes, scooters, surfboards and barbecues stored on the back or in below floor cargo areas. Outdoor showers are popular for hosing off kids after a day at the beach and most RVs offer retractable awnings to offer shady areas for families to relax out of the sun. There are even more permanent RVs that can be parked for a full season to provide a cabin–like experience. The beauty of destination delivery is that it takes all the work out of the driving, parking, set-up and take–down that is typical of traditional RV travel. By leaving the rough stuff to the RV pros, all you need to do is show up, settle in and start relaxing. Fun is the name of the game when it comes to RV travel. One of the more popular RV delivery destinations in the San Diego area is Campland on the Bay (www.campland.com), which offers a full variety of RV and tent camping sites along the tranquil Mission Bay. With a scenic, wooded dog park, several swimming pools and spas, a fitness center, marina with boat rentals, concert stage featuring free weekly “cover band” concerts throughout the summer, an amphitheater and many other vacation–oriented activities, CONTINUED ON PAGE 34

Campland is a popular family friendly destination that draws families back year after year, according to Sally Romoser, Campland’s marketing chief. “We have so much to do here that many guests don’t even leave the campground,” she said. “Many people tell me that they have become best friends with people they met here and book together year after year.” And for a more VIP experience, Campland offers a special luxury “SuperSite”—a penthouse suite for RVers—that is completely enclosed by a privacy fence and features a Jacuzzi, sand beach, fire ring, chairs, barbecue and washer/dryer, all with a spectacular view of Mission Bay and the San Diego skyline. On summer nights, the SuperSite offers a perfect view of the nightly fireworks display at SeaWorld, just across the bay. Birds, fish and other wildlife frolic in your backyard as you sip cocktails or your morning coffee in the privacy of Campland’s SuperSite. The SuperSite is very popular among all Campland guests because it offers a luxurious glamping experience unlike anything else you’ll find at typical RV campgrounds. “Our SuperSite is so popular that I wish we had more than just one to rent out,” said Kim McAnally, Campland’s reservation and registration manager. “Some campers will pack up and move into the SuperSite for just one night when it is available because it’s such a unique experience.” Whether you decide to trek the open road in your RV or choose destination delivery, it’s a good idea to shape–up on your RV knowledge. Just as there are many camping options to choose from, there are a variety of RVs available to fit whatever needs a family may have. Type A – Conventional motorhomes are constructed entirely on

a specially designed motor vehicle chassis. Home–like amenities abound and generally these motorhomes have kitchens, bathrooms, living areas with entertainment centers and centrally controlled heating and air conditioning. Type B – Commonly called van campers, Type B motorhomes are built using automotive manufactured van or panel–truck shells. Van campers drive more like the family car, but offer the comforts and conveniences of home on the road. Type C – Motorhomes built on an automotive van frame with a wider body section attached to the original cab section. Many Type C motorhomes are easily recognizable by the over–the–cab area that is often an optional sleeping area. Amenities are similar to those in conventional motorhomes. Towable – Towable RVs must be mounted on or towed by a motorized vehicle to be moved from place to place. Some towables are small and light enough to be towed by the family car, while others require an SUV or pickup truck. Some examples include: Conventional Travel Trailers; Fifth Wheel Trailers; Expandable RVs; Sport Utility RVs; Folding Camper trailers; Truck Campers. Specialty RVs – Designed to complement a wide variety of lifestyles and needs, from hobbies to accessibility challenges, RVs can meet a wide range of needs and wants. Examples: Horse Trailers, Ice Fishing houses and RVs for the disabled. Park Model RVs – Unique units that provide temporary accommodations for recreation, camping or seasonal use. Park Model RVs are designed to look like a home, but they need to be hooked up to site electricity, sewer and water like any RV. With summer vacation season in full swing, perhaps it’s time to think outside of the hotel box and roll into a holiday on wheels.

hen you think of the perfect tropical vacation with white sandy beaches, swaying palm trees and lush, green mountains, only one place comes to mind: Hawaii. San Diego may be America’s FINEst city, but sometimes even us native San Diegans need a little escape, and there’s no place like Hawaii for get–away relaxation. Situated along the paradisiacal coast of Hawaii’s Big Island on 62 well–planned acres, overlooking crystalline blue waters and picturesque palms, the award–winning Hilton Waikoloa Village is where we recently chose to escape for our annual summer respite. As we took off and I thought about our week ahead, I began to realize just how much there is to see in Hawaii and worried I wouldn’t be able to see it all in one trip. Which island do you choose? Do you want to explore all the adventures the state has to offer or relax on the shore? With Hilton Waikoloa Village I soon realized I could have the best of every world. and crashing waves. We headed straight to the Big Island Breakfast at Water’s Edge, a bountiful breakfast buffet with fresh–baked pastries, native fruits, traditional American fare and a selection of Japanese specialty dishes. Water’s Edge offers breathtaking views of the tropical landscape, making it the perfect place to enjoy your morning coffee. After breakfast, the island is at your fingertips: whether you want to relax on the beach or do something a little more exciting, like paddle boating, snorkeling, or swimming, the resort is ready to provide. The best part about Hilton Waikoloa Village is that it’s peaceful, yet playful. And with the amazing transportation system of trams and canals, it’s always easy to get to your next activity. One of the best parts of the resort is definitely the Kohala Spa. Kohala Spa is committed to the native Hawaiian concept of “Ho’oponopono,” a therapeutic dimension or feeling that inspires a healing of body and mind, making it one of the most relaxing spa experiences out there. Kohala Spa was designed to feature all the elegance of a European–style spa within the natural habitat and aura of Hawaii. Our much–awaited couple’s massage provided the CONTINUED ON PAGE 38

ultimate relaxing experience. Each therapist was incredibly talented, so that neither of us left disappointed. Trust me, I am an expert when it comes to massages: this is something you don’t want to miss. If there’s a golf enthusiast in your group, you absolutely can’t miss the award–winning Kings Course. It’s a true player’s course, offering both challenge and reward. The course is carved into ancient volcanic rock and offers incredible views of the Big Island. We spent an entire day on the course and, between the amazing landscape and challenging golf game, we were never bored. Of course, the most magical part of our experience was undoubtedly swimming with dolphins! Hilton Waikoloa is the only Hawaiian resort with a dolphin encounter experience on property.

The Dolphin Quest interactive program is truly an experience of a lifetime, where you’re guided by knowledgeable experts and find yourself face–to–face with one of the world’s most intelligent creatures. Not only did I get to fulfill a lifelong dream by swimming with dolphins, we learned so much about these amazing animals, too. Hilton Waikoloa Village calls itself a “gateway to cultural immersion,” and it truly accomplishes that goal. Its foundation is built on the beautiful, peaceful spirit of Hawaii and it constantly incorporates those traditions into visitors’ everyday experiences. We left feeling relaxed, rejuvenated and inspired. Waikoloa sent me home with a little piece of Hawaii, and not just in the form of a lei: the serene spirit of the Big Island still rests in my heart, the best souvenir in the world. TRANSFORM YOUR OUTDOOR SPACE INTO AN EXTENSION OF YOUR HOME BY C E L I A TAG H D I R I

ackyards and patios are hubs for families and friends to socialize, unwind and even celebrate. Some homeowners use their outdoor living space to host company meetings, birthday parties and weddings. Due to San Diego’s favorable climate and recent technology, residents can create the ideal outdoor living area by adding a few new trends to the traditional amenities. Let’s begin with the sound system. What’s a friendly gathering without good music? Today’s stereos and speakers are designed to camouflage with plants, rocks and lights, blending perfectly with the surroundings without compromising quality. But why settle for only sounds? Thanks to the weatherproof outdoor TV, homeowners can move entertainment out to the patio and enjoy it throughout the year. Flat panel televisions of superior quality are made to resist weather damage. Some television screens and projectors are mounted directly into media centers that blend with the outdoor furnishings when not in use. For further protection, custom-fitted outdoor TV covers are also available. “Today’s outdoor televisions are high– bright and high–temperature panels with a special type of glass that has greatly improved image quality. Our outdoor TVs can be placed anywhere in the backyard, not just necessarily in the shade. You can even put it next to the swimming pool because they are sunlight viewable and sun–survivable. Also, the outdoor TV is the focal point of outdoor entertainment,” said Benjamin Chapman, president and owner of 2S2, Inc. 2S2’s TVs don’t just add to your outdoor space, they make it home. But outdoor home entertainment is not limited to sounds and images. Swimming pools provide recreation for people of all ages. Both old and young can keep active for a lengthy period of time by swimming and playing different water games such as pool volleyball, water hoops and relay races. Guests who prefer to remain dry can entertain themselves with an outdoor pool table and lawn games, like croquet and paddle ball. Enjoy your outdoor space even more with man’s greatest invention: fire. A fireplace, chimera or fire pit on the patio provides heating during chilly evenings and a romantic crackle.

Regardless of the season, backyard campfires are a favorite pastime and greatly enhance outdoor living areas. Everyone loves to gather around built–in fire pits to roast marshmallows and tell ghost stories. What makes a good event great? Delicious food and drinks prepared in an outdoor kitchen! Varying in size and functionality, an outdoor kitchen not only helps feed hungry guests, its cabinets and countertops provide ample storage space. When it comes to backyard kitchen designs, the sky is the limit. Furthermore, this amenity adds value and versatility to any home, and with such a wide range of options, these kitchens are no longer limited to the wealthy.

But guests cannot savor the taste of delicacies while standing! With the wide variety of patio furniture available, enjoying a gourmet meal or a casual appetizer in the backyard has never been easier– or more comfortable. The right patio furniture can make any outdoor space as comfortable as your favorite indoor room. Switch up your look seasonally with colorful, squishy cushions. Even tree stumps can be used for additional seating while adding some rustic character to the backyard. One of the most important aspects of your space is, of course, landscaping. Terra Bella Landscape Development is the premier provider of professional landscaping in all of San Diego, transforming your backyard into an oasis. With experience in landscape renovations, concrete, masonry, pools and spas, fireplaces, outdoor kitchens, drought tolerant landscapes, water features, lighting and irrigation, Terra Bella is able to accomplish every one of your dreams with ease. The special touch of a professional can turn your outdoor space into a real room. Transform your backyard into an adult playground or the most relaxing area in the home while creating memorable moments with your friends and family. Whether you’re looking to relax and watch the game or sip on cocktails with friends, the possibilities are truly endless for a backyard retreat!

Putting Your Best Foot Forward MONIQUE FRIEDMAN’S FLIPINISTA IS CHANGING THE WAY WE WALK B Y E M I LY G L A S E R

W

ith summertime in full swing and sandal season upon us, we’re all faced with the difficult dilemma of what, exactly, to wear on our feet. What’s a discerning, fashionable woman to do— how do we choose between the comfort of a flip–flop and the style of a stiletto? With Flipinista, you don’t have to; Monique Friedman has created the perfect solution, a functional flip–flop with the chic elegance and unquestionable style of a pair of Manolo Blahniks. Since FINE last spoke with Monique, Flipinista has truly matured into a successful and prosperous business with fans across the nation. We sat down with the founder to get the scoop on her success. EG: What inspired you to form Flipinista? MF: Well, truthfully flip–flops are very frumpy– they don’t have any style or personality, so I thought, “I’m going to create a flip–flop that’s fun and glamorous!” I wanted to create something that made flip–flops not just something you wear to the beach, but something that you’d take from beach to black tie. I was inspired when I noticed people would take flip–flops to change into when they dress up. When I saw my friend change from heels to flip–flops, I said, “Oh my God, your outfit just went from fab to drab!” That was when I decided I was going to make the flip–flop world more beautiful. I wanted to create flip–flops that still make a statement, and don’t compromise; beauty, glamour and comfort– it’s all there. I never even wore wore flip–flops until I created Flipinista. I knew so many people who’d carry them in their bag, go from fab to drab to be comfortable. But now you don’t have to compromise! I decided to turn the flip–flop world on it’s heel, and Flipinista was born! What makes Flipinista special and unique from other brands? There are several factors that define Flipinista’s philosophy: Create

42

FINEsd.com • facebook.com/FINEmagazines

lavish flip–flops immaculate in detail and design while making sure to exude first class comfort. It is also our mission to provide our clients with the best customer service possible. Flipinistas are not just made for comfort, but extravagance, no matter the occasion. The attention to detail, quality and comfort is unparalleled. Every pair is impeccably hand–sewn by an expert shoemaker in San Diego; they’re designed to last. And they’re not just beautiful, we have to keep in mind the function of the foot in order for the user to be comfortable. I truly design with my heart. Any original piece of art is a reflection of the artist, and to create something extraordinary out of the ordinary is truly art! Love is in the details, as an example; I always place a different crystal at the end of the design on the strap. It acts as an exclamation point to the design’s story. Each one is designed with so much love and attention to detail, you can’t duplicate that in a mass–produced item. Wearers feel that energy, they feel happy when they wear them! People covet and collect each one–of–a–kind pair. I’ve even received calls from the hospital, fans of Flipinista who tell me, “When I get better, the first thing I’m going to do is buy a pair of Flipinista.” This woman who’s laying in a hospital bed is comforted by photos of Flipinista. If that doesn’t tell me that I’m doing my job well, I don’t know what does. What words of advice would you give to someone thinking of starting their own company? It does take a lot of work and a lot of time to be successful, in any occupation. But if you follow your dream and believe in your dream it will come true. The key is never give up and persevere. The biggest surprise is you really think it’s going to be easy, but it doesn’t turn out that way. A path without obstacles leads to nowhere. You will encounter many obstacles on the road to success, it’s is how you handle them that makes the difference. I choose to view obstacles as opportunities to learn from. They teach me how I can improve my business and brand. It is also very important that you know and identify your market and customer. Regardless of the type of business, a business’ success is based on the client being happy. And that is Flipinista ‘s number one priority: making our clients happy.”

Veterans’ Best Friend

LOCAL CHARITY SHELTER TO SOLDIER CONNECTS RESCUE DOGS TO VETERANS BY N ATA L I E N E E C E

A

s the old saying goes, “a dog is a man’s best friend.” The idiom rings particularly true when it comes to Shelter to Soldier, a local non–profit organization that rescues shelter dogs and trains them to be psychiatric service companions for wounded combat veterans. Shelter to Soldier is a unique organization because with one act of charity they save two lives. They train rescue dogs from shelters and match them to a veteran suffering from PTSD (post–traumatic stress disorder) or TBI (traumatic brain injury). Their mission: to provide a therapeutic service outlet for post–war victims. “We want to create awareness of PTSD and TBI by rescuing dogs to help veterans live a normal life. The dogs provide these men and women with love and support. We train them in specific tasks that help create comfort and make them feel safe,” says Shelter to Soldier founder Graham Bloem. Shelter to Soldier began in 2012 when Bloem, who was inspired by his past dog training experience and his interactions with Marines, whose relationships with their dogs helped them maintain a sense of home during times of war. According to the Department of Veteran Affairs, in the past year alone the number of diagnosed cases of PTSD in the military increased by 50%. Studies estimate that one in five military personnel returning from Iraq and Afghanistan are suffering from PTSD. For medically retired Navy Veteran Vic Martin, his experience with Shelter to Solider was absolutely life changing. Having suffered from both PTSD, TBI and anxiety, Martin qualified for a service dog but the VA didn’t cover it and other organizations had already exceeded their budget. Thankfully, Martin’s wife discovered Shelter to Soldier.

Martin graduated from the dog training program in November 2014 with his dog Kira. She had been in training for 10 months prior to their meeting, then they continued with 4 months of one– on–one training. The healing process began right away. “I was scared to leave the house with a brain injury, PTSD, and anxiety; it was sheer terror. I was scared of the influence the people in the outside world had on my life. I was fragile. Shelter to Soldier was my last hope. I’m married with 3 children and I was scared to attend functions. It was heartbreaking for everyone,” said Martin. “Shelter to Soldier is an amazing process and I noticed a difference in my life. I gained back normal confidence. I was excited to leave the house on my training days with Graham. It gave me something to aim for, great connection to give me enough smiles for the next week. It was powerful from the beginning. It’s unbelievable, how much has changed. I love Kira and she loves me. Shelter to Soldier gave me my life back. It gives veterans an amazing tool to help with this terror,” Martin continued. Martin’s story is just one of many; Shelter to Soldier is changing the lives of countless local veterans and lovable dogs. Shelter to Soldier’s motto is saving lives two at a time and that is truly what they do. t’s morning. You roll out of bed and stagger to the coffee pot. Maybe you turn on the news and hear something like this: market is down today and the Dow has dropped 50 points. As you pour that coffee into a trembling cup, you might think, “There goes my portfolio and it’s only 8am.” Since the Dow (Dow Jones Industrial Average) is one of the most common indices quoted on the news, it’s good to know what the Dow is: the Dow is comprised of 30 well–established, household name U.S. Companies. It’s one of the oldest indices, around since 1896, but with only 30 stocks, this is a small sampling of the total market. If your portfolio has more than 30 securities, you may not experience that level of volatility in the original scenario. If your portfolio has less, you probably experience more. Diversification is a way to reduce (but not eliminate) risk by increasing the number of stocks. If you invested in every stock on the planet, you could have well over 10,000 stocks in your portfolio. Your response to daily news can squash your portfolio and take you off track. If every time you hear of a drop you sell, you won’t be invested when the market recovers and you can miss the best days of the market. As the wife of a planner, I enjoy learning about the number of stocks in a portfolio. Obviously, it’s not just a numbers game; asset allocation is crucial. I leave complex allocation decisions to the Certified Financial Planner™ professionals, but, if you are interested in understanding the risk in your portfolio, here are some questions worth asking: 1. How many stocks are in my portfolio? 2. Is there an option that keeps the number of stocks in the portfolio high for diversification, while matching our risk/ return goals? 3. How does asset allocation help identify the risks that are worth taking and the risks that are not? 4. How does missing the best days of the market impact my portfolio? Keeping these questions in mind when you speak with you planner allows you to invest wisely.

M

ay Grey and June Gloom have finally given way to sunshine in July with sunny days and warm nights, what San Diegans know and love. It’s time to get off the couch, out of the office and into the outdoors for fresh air in your lungs, sunlight on your skin and sand under your bare feet; disconnecting from all electronic tethers and freeing yourself from electromagnetic field (EMF) bombardment will add life and health to your days. SUNSHINE Before you venture outside with your long sleeve sun–shirt, floppy hat and common commercial sunscreen in hand to avoid the ‘harmful’ rays of the sun, there is something you must know: the sun is good. Yes, that’s right, getting safe sun exposure every day, both measured and gradual, is one of the best things you can do for your immediate health. Twenty minutes of full body sun exposure during the midday produces 20,000 I.U. of vitamin D, the “sunshine vitamin.” Recent research has shown that increasing vitamin D levels in the general population could prevent chronic diseases that claim the lives of one million people worldwide. In fact, optimizing your vitamin D levels can reduce your risk for as many as 16 different types of cancer, including pancreatic, lung, ovarian, breast, prostate and skin cancers. A study of menopausal women showed that maintaining healthy vitamin D levels lowers overall cancer risk by 77 percent. Vitamin D also fights infections, including colds and flu, and influences your immune system to attack bacteria and viruses. For extended periods in the sun, a quality zinc oxide based sunscreen to avoid photo–aging and facial wrinkles is recommended. Avoid any sunscreen that contains Oxybenzone (hormone disrupters), Retinyl Palmitate (a form of vitamin A that can trigger cancer), SPF over 50 (false and misleading) and sprays that can be mistakenly inhaled. Sunglasses may be necessary to protect your eyes when snow skiing or boating, but wearing sunglasses too often can

weaken your immune system and block the beneficial wavelengths of light that actually strengthen your eyes. GROUNDING How fortunate we are to live in San Diego with its miles of sandy beaches to kick off our shoes and walk along the water’s edge! Research tells us the reason it feels so good is that the earth has a negative charge and when barefoot you are receiving a virtual transfusion of healing electrons from the ground. The earth is a natural source of electrons which are essential for proper functioning immune and circulatory systems. In addition, inflammation in the body, responsible for most diseases of aging, can be reduced by grounding to the earth. Wearing too many rubber and plastic soles on your shoes will block beneficial electron transfer from the earth, while leather soles will allow this beneficial electron transfer into your body. BREATHING Many people complain about fatigue and low energy; often poor posture and poor breathing habits are big contributors. Forward head and rolled shoulders, common with excess computer, smart phone and tablet use, can reduce lung capacity upwards of 30%. Coupled with poor breathing habits, such as shallow chest breaths, bad posture can lead to excess carbon dioxide in the blood and poor oxygen exchange in the lungs resulting in fatigue, low energy and stress. Performing regular diaphragm breathing exercises with correct posture can do wonders for your energy, alertness and vitality. Mindful breathing can reduce common symptoms of stress such as anxiety and digestive problems. Strengthening the diaphragm helps oxygenate your blood, pumping the lymphatics and aiding in the elimination of toxic waste while strengthening your immune system. Begin your day with a routine of 40 repetitions of diaphragm breathing and increase your energy and well–being rapidly. Adopting these simple and powerful health promoting habits will help you change your life today and your health tomorrow. Get outside and live!

rom the beginning, the Del Mar Races were a party like no other, a playground of the stars where high society gathered in a spectacle of beauty, finery and competitive spirit. But in the 1930’s, what Bing Crosby might have seen as the most commonplace of things, the wearing of a hat, morphed into one of the most fun and anticipated fashion scenes of the year, The Opening Day Hat Contest. What began as artistic license of the rich and famous has developed into a playful competition, rife with creativity, glamour and humor. The five categories, Most Glamorous, Best Fascinator, Best Flowers, Best Racing Theme and Funniest/Most Outrageous, usually attract hundreds of contestants. Winners receive a wide array of prizes from various sponsors, among them, Studio Savvy Salon in Rancho Santa Fe, which plays an integral part in the contest.

“At the early age of 17, when most teenage girls were busy daydreaming, Deena was already cutting, styling and coloring hair.”

And not many know fashion like Studio Savvy’s owner, Deena Von Yokes. At the early age of 17, when most teenage girls were busy daydreaming, Deena was already cutting, styling and coloring hair. Her mother’s salon was the perfect playground for her talents and she quickly fell in love with the fashion world. Fast forward 34 years and Deena is still rocking the local glamour scene. Her salon, Studio Savvy, a cornerstone in Rancho Santa Fe, is best known for their crew of color specialists. Having been dubbed a “salon for the perfect blonde,” Deena contests the title. “Our glam squad doesn’t try to specialize in blondes. It’s just a niche that we happen to be very good at. Personally, I just love working creatively with color. It’s important not to be limited in such a creative arena. I think hair is a beautiful art form and I consider myself, above all else, to be an artist.” With her expertise in all things fashion and beauty, it made

perfect sense when Craig Dado of the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club approached her with the opportunity to direct, with Joe Cuviello, the famous Opening Day Hat Contest at the Del Mar Races. Her experience in the community with events for the Children’s Hospital, National Charity League, Art of Fashion, San Diego’s Top 10 Dressed and her collaboration in the industry with fashion leaders like Zandra Rhodes lend credibility to her new position and make her the perfect spokesperson for the event. “This event is a blast,” Deena commented. “Fun for the judges, fun for the contestants and fun for the spectators. It’s a great way to honor the tradition of the racetrack’s early days with new creative flair.” Deena’s fashion tip for the races: This is one day where you don’t want to blend in with the crowd. It’s a great opportunity to have crazy fashion fun and go big, literally. It just makes the day that much more festive! FINEsd.com • facebook.com/FINEmagazines

Into the Summer Wild

I

A SIMPLE, CURATED APPAREL GUIDE FOR THE MOUNTAIN–PRONE BY JAMES MORAN

t seems that summer is unequivocally tied to the image of boundless sanded beaches, rolling salted waves, and crystalline blue skies. It’s the season of ease: the season of the young–in–spirit, and, of course, the season of the restless. Three months of graciously drawn out days and hot summer nights, bound with the electricity of briny Southern California breezes and the sweet summer solstice. Bliss incarnate? It would seem so, but not for all. What is left for those who yearn for more than the traditional summer trope? The wild western wilderness. With nine state parks, California reigns first, over other American states, with the most nationally recognized protected areas—some of the most notable being Yosemite, the Redwoods, and Sequoia National Park. And with wilderness abound, one must undoubtedly consider clothing apparel; therefore, let’s preview a number of fashionable necessities from accessible brands, such as Japanese designer UNIQLO, to higher–end niche brands like AETHER:

UNIQLO’s “Ultra Light Down” hooded coat keeps one snug and warm, while the shorter hem and subtly drawn-in waist create a slender, feminine look ($69.90, uniqlo.com).

AETHER “Elite Leggings” offer forward side seams that follow the contours of one’s body, creating a silhouette that holds and flatters in all the right places ($90, aetherapparel.com).

FINN COMFORT “Garmisch” leather hiking boots provide refined simplicity for a durable yet attractive piece of footwear, making you trail–ready ($394.95, nordstrom.com).

AETHER “Welded Duffle” is a rugged yet refined piece of luggage that’s versatile enough for any trip and durable enough for the outdoors ($250, AetherApparel.com).

POWAY WEAPONS & GEAR TRANSFORMS SHOOTING RANGE INTO COUNTRY CLUB As a young woman with little knowledge of guns, I was a bit intimidated by the idea of writing an article profiling a shooting range– but Poway Weapons & Gear is by no means your average shooting range; the massive space brings to mind the elegantly exclusive airs of a country club far more than the old–school boys club most of us associate with a gun range. From the moment I walked into Poway Weapons & Gear I felt at home, a privileged guest catered to by the knowledgeable and friendly staff. Whether you’re a novice or an expert, Poway Weapons & Gear has the informed staff, superior equipment and facilities, and well–stocked retail space to make you feel both comfortable and eager to return. I was lucky enough to get a personal tour from PWG’s founder, John Phillips. After a 24 year career in federal law enforcement and security consulting, and with an inherent passion for training and instructing in the weapons field, Phillips found himself frustrated with his lack of options in the civilian sphere. He quickly found there was nowhere to take his clients or family where he could train them the way he wanted to, or even be treated the way he wanted to be treated at a shooting range. There was simply no option of a high–class range with first–class training in San Diego— until he created one. Phillips began in 2009 with just a retail space, its success inspiring him to open PWG in 2014.

S

ince opening in the fall of last year, Poway Weapons & Gear has welcomed 110,000 guests through its doors and 30,000 onto one of its three ranges. With 25, 50, and 100 yard ranges, PWG is truly unique; most ranges offer a mere 25 or even 15 yards to practice in. Each range is completely automated with a variety of options for each shooter. Choose your target (varying from friend/ foe, playing cards, even golf–themed for you putting enthusiasts) and the system takes over, flipping randomly and traveling anywhere along the rail, near, far and everywhere in between. The 100 yard range offers larger booths, allowing the shooter to stand, sit or shoot prone, making it the perfect place to shoot your larger weapons. If you like to envision yourself as Bradley Cooper in American Sniper, this is the place for you. Phillips continued to pull more and more tricks out of his proverbial sleeve as we toured the ranges, me writing fervently and glancing about with open– mouthed wonder. He pointed out large doors in the back of the range that can open to accommodate vehicles for special law enforcement or military training exercises. Next, the black sound–proofing walls and the way the doors seal behind us to create a vacuum so that everything —from scent to lead— can be sucked downrange in the facility’s top–of–the–line HEPA ventilation system. There’s always a range safety officer patrolling the massive facility in order to answer any questions guests may have and to ensure everyone feels, and is, completely safe. Phillips continued to point out every way in which PWG works to make guests feel comfortable, and his work truly shows; every inch of PWG is clean without feeling sterile, from the fresh air to the sparkling floors. And my opinion isn’t the only one that proves what he’s doing is working: while the majority of visitors to a shooting range stay downrange for approximately 40 minutes, PWG’s guests stay for an average of 90 minutes, more than twice that of the industry average. Once you step onto one of PWG’s ranges, you literally do not want to leave. It’s not just the range itself that makes PWG special. Phillips’ passion has always lay in training, and he wanted to lead

64

FINEsd.com • facebook.com/FINEmagazines

the industry in programs and classes; in just a few short months he has done just that. Commonly referred to as “PWG University,” PWG offers 40 classes ranging from intro to gun safety to training for special forces. Two specially–equipped classrooms offer space for everything from presentations to basic gun–handling. Another thing that distinguishes PWG is its retail space: 3,500 square feet of over $1 million in merchandise, including

1,000 firearms and 8 million rounds of ammunition. Knowledgeable and friendly staff are perpetually present behind gleaming countertops, ready and willing to answer any questions you might have about the incredible retail selection. PWG even offers a VIP lounge with large televisions, lounge chairs and a refrigerator, perfect for your next corporate team–building event, or even your bachelor or bachelorette party. What I found particularly alluring

about PWG is Phillips’ interest in making sure female customers, especially those experiencing their first time on a shooting range, are completely comfortable. Every detail of PWG is designed to make women feel welcome, from a knowledgeable female staff to the elegantly outfitted women’s restroom. Regardless of your experience or gender, whether you’re a first–timer like me or an old–hand like Phillips, once you walk into PWG you’re

bound to feel comfortable and even inspired. Phillips mentioned, with a quiet laugh, that some of his female customers refer to Poway Weapons and Gear as the Nordstrom of gun ranges but, in truth, PWG is so much more than that; with its clean and vibrant atmosphere, friendly personnel, and vast opportunities for a day of fun or a cultivating learning experience, it’s your new home away from home. Your home on the range.

Unlike many ranges, Poway Weapons and Gear can accommodate many large gun models.

CASA SOL Y MAR OFFERS AL FRESCO DINING AT ITS BEST BY M AT T H E W Z A M U D I O

ith every change in season, there is a required change in lifestyle. When we shed the burden of winter, we often find ourselves spending more time outside, baring our flushed skin to the heat of summer’s sun. Summer is a glorious season full of spectacular weather and orange sunsets; we’re lucky to live in San Diego, a place which is known for its picturesque and ceaseless summers. To be outdoors is to be alive when the weather is as beautiful as Southern California’s and there is little you can’t do outside. Take, for example, dining. Outdoor dining, or al fresco dining, is a very geographically specific luxury. If not for Southern California’s temperate climate and paradisiacal summer months, al fresco dining would seem as foreign as surfing does to Russians, leaving us with an almost environmental responsibility to bask in the season. With the benefit of guaranteed warm weather, more and more Californians are beginning to take dinner outside, enjoying the many flavors of the summer season while in the midst of it. Al fresco dining is a simple concept and an experience waiting to be had, requiring just a little effort and a backyard patio. But if you’re not up to producing a full–fledged outdoor fiesta, you could take a trip to Casa Sol y Mar in the Del Mar Highlands Town Center, where your entire al fresco experience is served to you on colorful plates and in goblet–like margarita glasses. A few weekends ago I did just this and headed to Casa Sol y Mar to get a taste for what their al fresco dining experience was like. The restaurant, which opened in 2013, is a culturally eccentric space, designed and decorated with gold, crimson, and orange toned walls and a plethora of Mexican folk art. Owned by Diane Powers and her Bazaar Del Mundo Restaurant group, Casa Sol y Mar bares a striking resemblance to Powers’ other locations, maintaining a characteristic look of Americanized Mexicana and offering a similar selection of plates. On the colorful patio of Casa Sol y Mar’s restaurant during my al fresco experience, I assessed Powers’ restaurant philosophy, trying to decide if “great value, memorable flavors, abundant menu, and authentic environment” had all been present thus far; I decided Powers had precisely executed her philosophic standards, but then, I may have been positively influenced by the mouthful of delicious carnitas. With an extensive outdoor bar, turquoise tiled fountain and twinkling stream of overhead lights, the al fresco dining environment of Casa Sol y Mar is delightful. The decor continues outside of the restaurant, and the careful choice of tables, chairs, and other decorative items are obvious indications of Powers’ interior design past. For being beside a main road, the patio is pleasantly tranquil and the lull of low–volumed Mexican music adds a cultural flare to the table. My first dish of the night was my favorite, incorporating carnitas, refried beans on a tostada, guacamole, and a Mexican coleslaw, which came together to become Carnitas A La Michoacan. Served beautifully on a brightly colored plate and with a variety of eye–catching garnishes, my eyes widened and my stomach growled before the plate had even touched the table. The most delicious component of this plate, though, were the juicy, perfectly cooked carnitas, which I continued to intermittently eat throughout my many dishes at Casa Sol y Mar. As head chef of the restaurant Tony Carreto continued serving and explaining tasty dishes like Carne Asada and Shrimp, Seafood Ensalada Sol y Mar and Mango Chicken Chipotle, I noticed a true passion in his eyes for the food he’s been cooking for over three years. Hailing from Acapulco, Mexico, Carreto explained how he’d joined the restaurant in 2012, helping to prepare for the grand opening. Of

the many questions I asked Carreto during my al fresco experience, I was most eager to discover how this man could cook such delicious carnitas. Sorry, everyone– I promised I’d keep it a secret. Casa Sol y Mar is just one option among many in the San Diego area that offers a great al fresco dining experience, so it’s easy to spend less time indoors and more time outdoors this summer. If you’re in the mood for Mexican, give Casa Sol y Mar’s diverse menu a try. Great food almost always tastes better outside, so live a little and ask to be seated on the patio next time you go to dinner. Summer is about experience and al fresco dining is a deliciously easy way to make an event out of a meal. Whether creating your own al fresco dinner at home, or heading out on the town for an al fresco experience at your nearest outdoor gastropub, you’re bound to have a mellow, carefree night under the Southern California summer sun or moon. So bring some sunscreen and an empty stomach and enjoy your summer outdoors. Our favorites for an al fresco summer include: STONE BREWERY CO. BISTRO This revered brewery’s bistros offer enormous outdoor spaces and some of the best American cuisine in the San Diego area. Pair your meal with one of Stone’s recommended beers and allow yourself to be spoiled by divine mix of beer and food until the sun goes down. C-LEVEL Looking for a view of the San Diego skyline while eating dinner tonight? Situated on literal stilts protruding from the bay, C–Level stares directly at the sparkling city and offers delicious seafood favorites. Just try not to get too distracted by the view or your date might make you leave. THE PATIO Sometimes taken for more of an art installation than a restaurant, The Patio is a visceral experience with plant–covered walls, illuminated trees and delicious eats and drinks. Stop by the The Patio and enjoy their unique selection of cocktails and cheeses, as well as diverse appetizers and entrees.

C-Level, The Patio and Stone all offer incredible outdoor dining experiences.

Untangling Musical History TANGLEWOOD MUSIC CENTER TURNS 75 BY ERICA MINER

usic festivals abound in the US and abroad, but few compare with the history and prestige of the Tanglewood Music Festival in the glorious Berkshire Mountains of Western Massachusetts. Renowned as the summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Tanglewood has a fascinating history, part of which involves my own experiences as a violin student at the prestigious Tanglewood Music Center (formerly the Berkshire Music Center), which celebrates its 75th anniversary this summer. In 1936, Mrs. Gorham Brooks and Miss Mary Aspinwall Tappan, two members of prominent Berkshire families, offered famed Boston Symphony Maestro Serge Koussevitzky a gift for the orchestra: the Tappan family estate of Tanglewood, with its buildings and 210 acres of lawns and meadows. Koussevitzky gratefully accepted the offering and on August 5th, 1937 the BSO presented an all–Beethoven concert under a tent on the Tanglewood grounds as part of their Music Under The Moon festival. Unfortunately, in the midst of the orchestra’s second program the following weekend, the heavens opened up and practically drowned both the musicians and the audience. At Koussevitzky’s insistence, plans were drawn up for a permanent structure for performances to take place and on August 4th, 1938 the orchestra performed for the first time in the Tanglewood Shed, now named The Serge Koussevitzky Music Shed in honor of the much–revered maestro. Every summer since then, except for the war years 1942–1945,

heavenly music has resounded under the stars at Tanglewood, with performances from classical musicians like Yo–Yo Ma and John Williams and pop musicians such as James Taylor and The Who. The Festival now attracts more than 350,000 visitors a year, many of whom enjoy music while sharing picnic meals seated on the lawn that sprawls outside the Shed. Tanglewood is now a verified international musical mecca. Koussevitzky’s vision of a school for young musicians on the verge of important professional careers, where they could study under world–renowned musicians and conductors, came to fruition in 1940 with the opening of the Berkshire Music Center, now named the Tanglewood Music Center. The faculty included such distinguished composers as Aaron Copland and the prodigious young star of Koussevitzky’s first conducting class was none other than a 22– year–old Leonard Bernstein. “Lenny” has become synonymous with Tanglewood (he taught there and conducted countless performances, including the last performance of his lifetime, with the BSO there), as well as a symbol of the success of the Center’s goal to prepare promising young musicians for musical greatness. As Koussevitzky so eloquently stated, the purpose of the center is “the education and training of a new generation of American artists […] to stir their imagination to new heights and new depths.” As a young violinist studying in Boston with the BSO’s legendary concertmaster Joseph Silverstein, I was lucky enough to spend three exhilarating summers as a Fellowship student at the Tanglewood Music Center where I performed with Bernstein and other great conductors like Seiji Ozawa (himself a student of Lenny) and

coached chamber music with members of the BSO. Looking back on my superb training at the TMC, I realized those experiences were a key component of my journey toward a position in the first violin section of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, where I performed for 21 years. This summer’s 75th anniversary marks a milestone for the TMC, replete with a plethora of dazzling events. TMC alumni will be able to attend rehearsals, performances, master classes and seminars, and also the traditional “Tanglewood on Parade” concert, in which the TMC joins with the BSO for a gala performance ending with Tchaikovsky’s monumental 1812 Overture. As part of TMC’s time–honored Festival of Contemporary Music, more than 30 commissioned works of well–established alumni composers will be performed by world–renowned artists. The highlight of the celebration will be a gala performance honoring the TMC’s 75th: Mahler’s 8th Symphony, the “Symphony of a Thousand,” featuring the BSO, Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra, Tanglewood Festival Chorus, American Boychoir, Boston University Tanglewood Institute Chorus, and eight acclaimed soloists, all led by BSO Music Director Andris Nelsons. On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the Tanglewood Festival in 2012, BSO artistic administrator Anthony Fogg said, “The Tappan Estate, once a graceful garden and manor house, has transformed into the preeminent American musical festival over the course of the last three quarters of a century […] we’re celebrating the countless musicians who’ve made their way through the Tanglewood Music Center to become the backbone of this nation’s rich musical life.” I am proud and honored to have been one of those musicians. Even better, I will be among the privileged few that will enjoy a trip back in time to relive the exalted experience of being a part of the Tanglewood dream.

very year during the month of July our city becomes Insane Diego. Everyone within 100 miles knows Comic–Con will take over the Gaslamp and Convention Center from July 8th through July 12th for five days of crazed fun. Over 140,000 tourists descend on San Diego, dressed in costumes ranging from Zombies to Star Trek and everything in between. And tickets? They sold out in mere minutes months ago. Over on Fiesta Island, July 11th–12th & 18th–19th marks the 62nd Annual Over–The–Line Tournament, presented by the Old Mission Beach Athletic Club. This is San Diego’s largest beach event of the year, known for its racy team names (of which not too many could be printed in these pages), sand, sun, food and lots of beer! This is OMBAC’s major fundraiser of the season; the proceeds from OMBAC’s activities and events have supported a wide range of local, national and international beneficiaries. There are just a few rules to follow at OTL: The No “B”s: No Bottles, Bicycles, Bowzers (dogs), Babies, Boas, Bad Attitudes or Battles (fighting). On the weekend of July 24th—26th, over 90 film crews ranging from amateurs, college students from schools such as Platt College 82

and SDSU, to seasoned film makers, will be dashing about the country shooting for the 48 Hour Film Project, or the “48.” This film competition is held in 130 cities across the nation. Teams have just 48 hours to complete a short film once they have been assigned a random genre (drama, comedy, silent film or any other of the 14 possible genres). At 6:57 PM on Friday evening, the teams are given a character name, a prop and a line; at 7:00 PM it’s game on and you have 48 hours to write, shoot, edit, score, post and render in the export format on disc. These films are then screened (this year at the Reading Gaslamp from August 10th—13th in 6 groups) with the top 3 going to Filmapalooza, a competition of the top 3 films from the 130 cities. From there, the top 10 of Filmapalooza head across the pond to the short film program in Cannes Film Festival to compete against the top 10 from the International 48 HFP (4 years ago a local won this Festival). This is 48 hours of sleepless insane fun. I have participated in this for the last five years and can’t wait for this one! So, now you know where I’ll be on the weekends this month. But let’s not forget the Summer Pops at the Embarcadero, Shakespeare at the Old Globe, the opening of the track in Del Mar and all the other exciting events playing across our county. Check our calendar for all the listings, it’s a great line up!
