he style that’s taken the beer world by storm has many nicknames – New England IPA, Hazy IPA, Unfiltered IPA to name a few. We often get asked what makes a hazy, a hazy, so we thought we’d set the record straight. While this style has been around for years, popularity has increased tenfold in the last year or so. It focuses on fruit-driven hop choices added in late hop additions plus extreme dry hopping to cut back on perceived bitterness, using more ester-laden yeast strains, adding oats and wheat to the malt base and most importantly – isn’t fined or filtered.
Garage Project Fresh IPA Garage Project’s Fresh IPA series is a rotating new, brewery fresh IPA that is unfiltered and unfined, showcasing a unique combination of yeast, malt and hops. This month’s composition is a malt base of Vienna, rolled oats and carapils with a hop profile of Mosaic, Citra and Nelson Sauvin finished with London Ale III yeast.
This ultimately means a fair amount of yeast and hop particles are left in suspension, giving that classic haze. This results in a predominantly juicy IPA, evoking impressions of tropical and stone fruit with more intense and fresh tasting hop characters, a smoother mouthfeel and low bitterness. The downside to these flavoursome beers is the shelf life, fresh literally is best with hazy IPAs that typically have a shelf life shorter than a freshly picked banana.
