Hi from Jeff NZ’s largest Bordeaux Wine Sale is upon us once again, which means it’s July and I for one can hardly believe where this year has gone! There’s always plenty going on here at Fine Wine Delivery, but this sale is one of my favourites every year. As we gear up to celebrate our 22nd birthday, I have lost count of how many times customers have said to me that they find French wine confusing and expensive – Bordeaux in particular! And that has always been the premise for this sale, to demystify Bordeaux on your behalf and dealing directly with the Châteaux we cut out the middleman and secure the best prices for you. In conjunction with four key Bordeaux Negociants we ramped up our initial search to include hundreds of possibilities, that we narrowed down to 100 for our tasting panel. All 33 wines that made the cut did so with 100% panel consensus. We looked for a fair representation of the subregions, and are thrilled to see a great mix of some old faithful brands as well as a few new Châteaux featured this year. Now, to try and keep things simple, I personally think there’s only a few things to remember when you’re learning about Bordeaux. Vintage matters... 2015 and 2016 are two extremely high-quality vintages consecutively, it was 2009 and 2010 when this last occurred. You almost can’t go wrong in vintages like these, but need to be more selective in lesser years. Left Bank vs Right Bank. We are simply referring to which side of the Gironde Estuary these regions lie. And this is important because of the difference in soils. The Right Bank is rich in clay and limestone, which is ideal conditions for plush

Merlot led styles... so you’ll mostly find Merlot and Merlot dominant blends from there. On the Left side of the Estuary it is more gravelly, due to the ancient river soils that are perfect for Cabernet and for wines that have greater structure and ability to age. The frustrating thing about French labels is the lack of varietal information on them, but rest assured we have included that in our expert tasting notes! The other confusing topic is that of Classification. Now this is where it does get more complex. Each region has its own ( or more ), and some Château don’t want to be restricted by these classifications in order to make the best wines they can. Many an expert have lost years of their lives trying to make this topic simple for the consumer and I for one would not get too hung up on this (unless you’re a wine investor), after all what’s more important is the journey the wine takes you on, and whether you enjoyed it or not. My advice to get you started on this journey is to visit one of our SuperStores this Saturday the 27th of July, where you can taste your way through a selection of 30 wonderful examples of quality and value to get your Bordeaux research underway. Here the famed Médoc reigns supreme with its subregions of Pauillac, Saint-Julien, Saint–Estephe, Margaux and Pessac-Leognan (the areas first classified in 1855). With gravelly, ancient river soils, this is where Cabernet Sauvignon dominates the blends bringing more powerful and tannic reds.
Saint-Emilion with its rich clay soils and limestone hillsides, and Pomerol with its gravels, are the most wellknown sub-regions. Typically known for rich, bold red wines filled with fleshy, ripe fruits; you’ll find mostly Merlot dominant blends.

A generous, smooth and very accessible entry into the red wines of Bordeaux. An excellent vintage, it is bursting with red fruits, florals and spice. A slightly creamed texture and soft tannins.

The third year this ultraconsistent, organically grown Bordeaux Supérieur has charmed its way into our annual selection. Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux Certified organic since the 2013 vintage, Fongaban whose origins date from the 17th century, is located just a few kilometres away from Saint-Emilion. Château Plaisance 2016 Montagne Saint-Émilion The iconic Château Plaisance built in 1886 was purchased by the Ducourt family in 1994, the well-established, old vines provide excellent fruit. The vineyards are located right on the border of the Saint Emilion/Lalande-de-Pomerol appellations. The wine spent 12 months in 100% French oak (50% new and 50% in one year old) before a further two years in bottle prior to being released. With only 3000 bottles

Château Teyssier 2016 Montagne Saint-Émilion A welcome return, this was a huge customer favourite last year. From 35-year-old vines, this red is juicy, layered and serious on the palate, with rich blackcurrant and deep red berry fruits. The rich fruits and smoky oak are all wonderfully harmonious with a silken mouthfeel. This is exciting value.

BORDEAUX Right Bank Château Faizeau Selection Vieilles Vignes 2016 Montagne Saint-Émilion Named after the Benedictine abbey of Faize, situated close to the property.
