T
he CAR CARE COUNCIL encourages motorists to be car care aware and perform these five simple steps to improve fuel economy and save money.
1. Check Tire Pressure: Keep tires properly inflated and improve gas mileage by up to 3.3 percent. 2. Use the Right Motor Oil: Improve gas mileage by 1 to 2 percent by using the grade of motor oil recommended by the manufacturer. 3. Replace Clogged Air Filters: Replacing clogged air filters on older vehicles can improve fuel economy and will improve performance and acceleration on all vehicles. 4. Check Engine Performance: Keep your engine running efficiently and improve gas mileage by an average of 4 percent.

5. Fix It: Addressing a serious maintenance problem, like a faulty oxygen sensor, can improve mileage by as much as 40 percent, according to fueleconomy.gov. “Proactive vehicle maintenance is a motorist’s best money saving tip,” says Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. “Routine auto care not only helps save on fuel costs, but it helps identify small issues so they can be serviced before they become bigger and more costly to repair.” To help motorists increase fuel economy and take better care of their vehicles, the Car Care Council offers valuable tools on its website, including a free personalized schedule and email reminder service. Auburn: “History’s Hometown”
I
conic 19th century historic sites draw visitors from near and far to Auburn. William Seward, Abraham Lincoln’s Secretary of State and supporter of heroic abolitionist Harriet Tubman, lived in Auburn. You can explore the Seward family’s beautiful home, as well as the Harriet Tubman site, now named a National Park. The Case Mansion offers another tour through history’s artifacts, while the Ward O’Hara Agricultural Museum offers a glimpse into what it took to cultivate the land. The Willard Memorial Chapel offers a unique opportunity to experience the artistic genius of famed Louis Comfort Tiffany. As you drive through the city you will see many beautiful 19th century homes and buildings. Auburn’s South Street is on the National Historic Register. Auburn’s history is matched by its current restaurants, shopping and arts events. It is home to the Auburn Doubledays, a professional minor league baseball team, and to the Finger Lakes Musical Theatre Festival, a showcase of musical theatre from on, off and beyond Broadway during the summer and early fall. Take in contemporary art exhibits at the Schweinfurth Memorial Art Center. Visit Emerson Park on Owasco Lake to cool off with a swim, walk along the shoreline, rent a boat and cruise the lake. Clifton Springs & Phelps Clifton Springs
O
ver the years thousands of visitors have come to Clifton Springs to seek the healing benefits of the sulphur springs that run through the village. Though the various therapies popularized here were based more often on spiritual beliefs than scientific facts, people like Dr. Henry Foster harnessed the power of the springs for use in his sanitarium in the late 1800s. The quaint atmosphere still experienced here is typified by the Victorian-era architecture. Celebrate the town’s heritage at the annual Sulphur Springs Festival, scheduled this year for Friday, June 1st and Saturday, June 2nd, with the parade at 6 p.m. on Saturday. The Sulphur Springs Car Show will also take place on Main Street in Clifton Springs on Saturday, June 2.

Hammondsport Page 40 | 2018 VACATIONER
Water, Wine and Wings! WATER: Located at the southern tip of Keuka Lake, Hammondsport is a charming, low-key village just right for a stress-free summer get-away. Home to the Finger Lakes Boating Museum, water views are never far from sight. Shops in town (with names like Lime Berry, Scandia House, Browsers and Keuka Artisan Bakery), antique stores, nearby wineries and breweries, great museums and plenty of opportunities for beach and water activities offer visitors the choices that led Budget Travel magazine readers to name Hammondsport “America’s Coolest Small Town.” WINE: Hammondsport’s first nickname was “The Wine Village,” as it became a center for the New York Wine industry and one of the oldest continuous makers of wine in the United States. It began in 1829 when the Rev. William Bostwick successfully cultivated Catawba and Isabella vines behind his rectory to produce communion wine. In 1860, Charles Champlin founded Pleasant Valley Wine Company, which became the first federally licensed winery in America. Today you can visit Pleasant Valley’s original stone buildings, now the home of the Great Western Winery and Visitors Center. More than a dozen wineries surround Keuka Lake and comprise the Keuka Lake Wine Trail. Several iconic wineries, including award-winning Dr. Konstantin Frank’s Vinifera Wine Cellars, Bully Hill Vineyards Winery and Heron Hill Winery, are minutes from Hammondsport. WINGS: Known as the Cradle of Aviation, Hammondsport is home to the Glenn H. Curtiss Museum. American motorcycle designer, manufacturer and recognized expert on gasoline engines, Glenn Hammond Curtis resided in Hammondsport. He was the first person to introduce aviation into the public eye when he flew his “JuneBug” over Keuka Lake on July 4, 1908. Curtiss is also known as the “Father of Naval Aviation,” and for many other pioneering inventions he created in Hammondsport.

Skaneateles Skaneateles
S
kaneateles is the eastern gateway to the Finger Lakes. The lake is 16 miles long and one of the cleanest in the world. History has it that after a trip around the world President Abraham Lincoln’s secretary of state, William H. Seward from Auburn, called Skaneateles Lake “the most beautiful body of water in the world.” Another pleasure Skaneateles offers is strolling Main Street’s Historic Business District and visiting the enticing variety of specialty shops, galleries and restaurants along the route. Many are housed in restored buildings dating back to the late 1700s. In 1984, the district became part of the National Register of Historic Places. Today, baskets of bright summer flowers, lovely trees and inviting park benches lead the way as you browse unique foods and culinary items, special antiques, jewelry, fun gifts, fashionable clothing, children’s toys and fine art and crafts. Take in the village’s picture-perfect gazebo by the lake. Get an ice cream cone on a hot summer day and walk the long pier for pretty lake views. Some like to fish off the end of the pier. One visitor to the Annual Classic & Antique Boat Show likened the experience to “stepping into a Norman Rockwell painting.” Visit the excellent web site by the Skaneateles Area Chamber of Commerce for more information, maps, itineraries, driving directions and details about all that Skaneateles has to offer. Go to skaneateles.com.

Weedsport & Cato
W
eedsport and Cato were both part of the Central New York Military Tract reserved for veterans of the American Revolution. Weedsport later became an important part of the Erie Canal, west of Syracuse. Originally named “Weed’s Basin” because the town had a basin (boat turnaround) during the Erie Canal era, the name was later changed to Weedsport. Visit Centerport Aqueduct and Aqueduct Park to get a feel for what it took to build the Erie Canal, the trade route that opened the United States to Westward expansion.
Weedsport & Cato Attractions Cross Lake
Between the Villages of Jordan and Meridian, Cross Lake is basically a widening of the Seneca River as the river flows through the lower third of the lake. According to the Department of Environmental Conservation, Cross Lake is probably best known for producing some large northern pike with fish in the 15 pound range being taken most years. Walleye, tiger musky, northern pike, largemouth and smallmouth bass are the main game fish found in the lake. A DEC launch on Sene-
ca River provides public access to Cross Lake. It is located on Bonta Bridge Road, 2 miles east of the Village of Weedsport. Hand launch. 10 cars and trailers. Several marinas also offer services. Make sure you have your fishing license in hand and check regulations.
Centerport Aqueduct & Aqueduct Park
Route 31 West, Weedsport The Erie Canal was the engineering marvel of its time and this is a great place to study its ingenuity.
