t’s time to get out of town! We’ve been cooped up for months and the road is calling. After you’ve done a well-serviced check-up of your car, don’t forget the helpful items you need to take along. Even a well-maintained vehicle can break down, so it’s advisable to put together an emergency roadside kit to carry with you. A cell phone tops the list of suggested emergency kit contents since it allows you to call for help when and where you need it.

July 24-25 50 Mile Garage Sale: Scenic By-way Route 90 The annual 50-mile Route 90 Garage Sale takes on a festival atmosphere each year as friends, family members and the occasional family dog go searching for surprises. Stretching along the roadside of Route 90, a New York State Scenic Byway, the sale runs from Montezuma in the north to the Village of Homer at the southern end. Along the way you will find everything imaginable. Always the last full weekend in July the official hours for the sale are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days, rain or shine. Please note:
The Rt 90 Garage Sale is an event that no one person or entity controls. There is no one to contact if the event will be held this year. It is a prediction that depends on the state COVID mandates at the time and individual interests in putting up a sale (assuming they are allowed by the state). ore than 120 wineries dot the shorelines of Cayuga, Seneca, Keuka and Canandaigua lakes. Skaneateles does not have a wine trail, but it does have Anyela’s Vineyard on West Lake Road. Lake Ontario wineries have also developed a wine trail. Each winery has its own style and specialty, everything from converted barns to sparkling new buildings, gift shops and bistros, plus every variety of grape and vintage. The region is known for its award-winning Rieslings and ice wines. Tasting rooms abound and some wineries also have restaurants on site and picnic areas you can enjoy. Some offer music series and special events. The Finger Lakes was named America’s top wine region in a nationwide poll conducted by 10Best.com, an affiliate of USA Today. With nearly 700 growers and 10,000,000+ trees, the New York Apple Association says enough apples are produced each year to bake 500 million apple pies! Before the mid-19th century, the “term” cider referred to fermented (alcoholic, or “hard”) cider. Hard cider was a staple of the English colonials’ diet. Unsure of the water supply, settlers immediately planted orchards and hard cider was the drink of the day. Then came Prohibition, urbanization and an influx of other settlers who preferred beer. Hard cider all but disappeared from the menu until the late 20th century, when artisanal hard cider making began a renaissance. Now more than a half dozen distilling operations throughout the region are crafting impressive local spirits. Myer Farm Distillers offers a taste of field to flask production, using certified organic grain from their own farm, one of the oldest and largest organic grain farms in the Northeastern United States, to craft distill a unique range of spirits. Finger Lakes Cheese Alliance is an organization of cheese producers who make artisan cheeses from milk produced at their family dairy farms. Treat your palate to everything from English style raw milk cheddars, cheese curd, gouda and Swiss types from dairy cow milk to blue cheeses, chevre and feta from goat and sheep milk. The Finger Lakes Cheese Alliance is made up of 12 working family farms and producers, each creating their own brand of artisanal and farmstead cheeses. In addition, several Associate Members support the Alliance -- from wineries and stores that carry their cheese, to accommodations that send their guests out for an “on-thefarm” experience. Find the farms’ visiting hours on the website’s Hours Page, and directions on the Map Page at the Cheese Alliance website listed here. The Alliance, however, advises that you always call ahead because, as working farms, hours of operation vary from farm-to-farm and season-to-season. Trail representatives also suggest that you not try to do the whole trail in one day. Go to the website, look at the map and plan your route by grouping four or five creameries together. Again, be sure to call ahead to confirm availability. The popular Annual Finger Lakes
Cheese Festival, organized by the Finger Lakes Cheese Alliance, will take place on July 24th at Sunset Creamery, 1618 County Route 15, Odessa. It is a fun-filled family day offering cheeses from Alliance members, plus homemade jams, jellies, baked goods, fresh produce, art and games for the kids. amillus, a popular suburb west of Syracuse, was part of the former Central New York Military Tract. Industrial development was promoted by the Erie Canal and the railroad line linking Syracuse to Auburn. Today you will find an interesting look at Erie Canal history at the Erie Canal Park and Sims Store Museum. Of historic note: On January 17, 1852, a call for a Free-Soil meeting in Camillus Village pulled in three hundred and thirty-six document signers. The meeting is claimed as the first in the United States distinctly created on the lines of what later became the Republican Party. It opposed the Fugitive Slave law and the admission of slave states. The Camillus area offers great shopping opportunities in three distinct areas, including: Township 5, a multiuse center; The Town of Camillus along West Genesee Street (Route 5) with top name retailers at Camillus Commons and Fairmount Fair Shopping Center; and the Village of Camillus with unique shops and boutiques.

Dedicated volunteers working with local government have undertaken the historic preservation of seven miles of the abandoned Erie Canal. Within the park, every structure that is needed to operate a canal is represented, including: the remains of the original Erie Canal, the first enlargement, a replica of Sim’s Store, a replica of a lock shanty, a canal feeder, Culvert 59, the Nine Mile Creek Aqueduct, and Gere Lock. Nine Mile Creek Aqueduct is a restored stone and wood aqueduct of the Erie Canal over Nine Mile Creek. It was built in 1841 and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. The towpath part of the structure has four arches of 30 feet each. It is an impressive part of the Erie Canal Park experience. Sims’ Museum is a replica of the original Sims canal store, constructed by John Sims prior to 1860. The store was stocked with anything the canal fleet needed in the way of medicines, cooking tools, food & water, kerosene & coal, apparel, animal feed & equipment, and hardware. The Erie Canal Park is open year-round for picnicking, hiking, jogging, bicycling, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, fishing, and non-motorized craft boating and canoeing on the canal. Hours: Sims Store Museum is open Saturday year-round, Noon-4 p.m. and May-October, Wednesday & Thursday, noon-4 p.m. and Sunday, 1-5 p.m. Canal Boat Tours are available Sundays, May-Columbus Day weekend with sailings at 1, 2, 3 and 4 p.m. Call for details and reservations and to check on COVID protocols. Dryden Lake Park is at the midpoint of this trail providing rest rooms, fishing and picnic shelters.The trail also passes through Cornell Botanic Gardens Pervis Road Wetlands Natural Area, which contains active beaver dams and various wetland habitats, making it an ideal site for wildlife viewing, particularly for migrant and wetland birds.

lbridge, a town in Onondaga County, contains the villages of Jordan and Elbridge. Elbridge is the smaller of the two, incorporated in 1848. What is now Route 5 was built on Native American trails in 1805 to connect Jordan and Elbridge. The Erie Canal was important to the commercial development of both villages. Today as you drive on Route 5 through both villages you will see many beautiful 19th century historic homes. Elbridge, like Camillus, was formed from tracts of land given as payment to Revolutionary War veterans. History continued to make its mark in Elbridge, as it was named for Elbridge Gerry, a former Massachusetts governor who participated in the Boston Tea Party, signed the Declaration of Independence and was the fifth Vice President of the United States.

he City of Fulton was named after Robert Fulton, the inventor of the steamboat. The Oswego River runs through the city, which was once filled with factories and mills, making use of the rapids and fast-flowing water for power. The two sides of the river have long been connected by two bridges -- one known locally as the “upper bridge” (Broadway/NY State Route 3) and the other more commonly known as the “lower bridge” (Oneida St.) The Nestlé plant in Fulton (closed in 2003) was the first chocolate factory in North America under the Swiss name. The Crunch bar and Nestlé’s Quik were both born in Fulton. The Miller Brewing Company operated a plant in the Town of Volney, (just outside Fulton city limits) from the mid-1970s until its closure in 1994. As Fulton works toward recovery from these economic setbacks, the Broadway Commercial District shines brightly. The 8 buildings on West Broadway between W. 1st and W. 2nd Streets were listed in the State Register of Historic Places and in the National Register of Historic Places in 2020. The Canal Landing Gazebo in the same area offers a pleasant place to view the river and the canal, plus summer concerts, the popular Fulton Jazzfest and the Fulton Farmers Market. Fulton Attractions Great Bear Recreational Trails
Great Bear Road, Fulton 315-343-4565; cnyhiking.com/GreatBearRecArea.htm Great Bear Recreation Area is located off County Route 57 between Phoenix and Fulton. This unique area is owned by the City of Fulton and the Town of Volney. There
are numerous miles of well-maintained trails used by hikers, mountain bikers, as well as cross country skiers. If your unsure of what to hike, CNY Hiking suggests the Yellow Loop. This loop follows yellow plastic trail markers on a pleasant 2.3-mile hike through the property. This hike takes you to an old lock along the Oswego River. You will hike briefly along the old towpath and to the perfect picnic spot with a bench on the banks of the river.
Oswego Canal
Lock 02 and Lock 03 are located in Fulton The Oswego Canal, opened in 1828, is 23.7 miles in length, and connects the Erie Canal at Three Rivers to Lake Ontario at Oswego. The canal has a depth of 14 ft, with seven locks spanning the 118 ft change in elevation. The modern canal essentially follows the route of the Oswego River, canalized with locks & dams. Three locks, with a total lift of 45.6 feet take boats over what had been a steep set of rapids at the city of Oswego. This is the only route from the Atlantic/ Hudson River system to Lake Ontario fully within the United States.
Canal Landing Gazebo & “Old Downtown” Fulton
South First St., Fulton The Gazebo, a bandstand in the “old downtown” area of Fulton, overlooks the Oswego River and one of two locks in the New York State Barge Canal portion of the waterway. Check the City of Fulton website for the free Summer Concert Series calendar (www.fulton.ny.gov). The downtown business district with several buildings of architectural interest, stores and eateries is right in the vicinity of the Gazebo.

ocated at the southern tip of Keuka Lake, Hammondsport is a charming, low-key village just right for a stress-free summer get-away. Water views are never far from sight. The village square, shops in town (Lime Berry, Scandia House, Browsers, Keuka Artisan Bakery and more), plus antique stores, nearby wineries and breweries, great historic museums and plenty of opportunities for beach and water activities offer visitors choices that led Budget Travel magazine readers to name Hammondsport “America’s Coolest Small Town.” Hammondsport’s first nickname was “The Wine Village,” as it became a center for the New York Wine industry and is one of the oldest continuous makers of wine in the United States. It began in 1829 when the Rev. William Bostwick successfully cultivated Catawba and Isabella vines behind his rectory to produce communion wine. In 1860, Charles Champlin founded Pleasant Valley Wine Company, which became the first federally licensed winery in America. More than a dozen wineries surround Keuka Lake and comprise the Keuka Lake Wine Trail. Several iconic wineries, including award-winning Dr. Konstantin Frank’s Vinifera Wine Cellars, Bully Hill Vineyards Winery and Heron Hill Winery, are minutes from Hammondsport. Known as the Cradle of Aviation, Hammondsport is home to the Glenn H. Curtiss Museum. American motorcycle designer, manufacturer and recognized expert on gasoline engines, Glenn Hammond Curtis resided in Hammondsport. He was the first person to introduce aviation into the public eye when he flew his “JuneBug” over Keuka Lake on July 4, 1908. Curtiss is also known as the “Father of Naval Aviation,” and for many other pioneering inventions he created in Hammondsport.

es, Homer was named for the ancient Greek poet, a reflection of the early American predilection for the classics. It was first settled in 1791 along and near the banks of the Tioughnioga River. Current residents take pride in the upkeep of some pristine examples of the Federal, Greek Revival, Italianate and Queen Anne style homes that line the village’s historic Main Street. In the center of the Old Homer Historic District lies the Village Green, a large, grassy, tree-filled area used for community events, festivals, fairs, and leisure activities. The Homer Farmer’s Market takes place here every Saturday from May – October. Visit the boutiques, gift shops, bakery and eclectic restaurants on Main Street and stroll the green for a great summer day.
Summer Events in Homer: July 4: 26th Annual Reading of the United States Declaration of Independence. “All are invited to gather at the Center for the Arts of Homer, 72 South Main Street, at 2 p.m. on Sunday, July 4th, to commemorate the first charter of our nation’s liberty. Charles W. Jermy, Jr. and Charles W. Jermy III will recount the circumstances that led up to the Declaration’s adoption in 1776 and talk briefly about the document’s structure. After describing the fates of some of the signers, they will invite those in attendance to read short portions of the Declaration aloud. Following the reading, a cannon will be fired and the bells in the buildings surrounding the Homer Green will be rung fifty times. The Center’s 1874 37-inch Meneely Bell is expected to join the other four bells for the first time in several years. Plan to participate in this important com-

Main Street Shopping
Homer Men & Boys is a clothing store that has served the community for more than 50 years. Their slogan “if we don’t have it, you don’t need it” generates a chuckle as you enter the store, packed with everything from Northface gear to Carhart. Next door, two connected stores, Bev & Co., and the Old Homer House carry clothing and gifts as well. Homer also has a bead shop, a health food store, a small grocery store, an olive oil shop, a bakery, and more.
National Historic District
Take a self-guided tour (visit homer.org for details) of the Homer Village National Historic District. Get to know the charming, well-preserved historic homes and architectural styles. fishonondagacounty.com (for a map of access points) Nine Mile Creek begins its 22-mile flow at Otisco Lake and flows north through the villages of Marcellus and Camillus before draining its cold waters into Onondaga Lake just west of the New York State Fairgrounds. The middle section has the best cold-water influence and is an excellent trout habitat. With 5 miles of public fishing rights (PFR) and 5 designated parking areas, the middle valley section of the creek is the most popular fishing spot. It supports a good number of both stocked and wild brown trout.

It is a two-story Victorian brick structure constructed in 1870. The first floor is reminiscent of a small-town railroad station. The second floor contains many railroad exhibits. Montour Falls:
The “Valley of Tumbling Waters”
S
urrounded by hills rising 1,000 feet, Montour Falls is the focal point for seven natural glens that radiate from its borders, with more than a score of waterfalls to see. The 165-foot waterfall located on the west end of the village is of special note as it seems like it should flow right down Main Street, a great backdrop for the specialty shops you will enjoy browsing. History permeates the village. Montour Falls was once the site of a Seneca Indian tribe, which was destroyed along with 40 other Amerindian villages by Sullivan’s army in 1779. The Iroquois Long House Council Chambers of the Haudenosaunee was located here. The village was named after Queen Catherine Montour, a prominent Native American woman of Seneca heritage who lived at the village site during the 18th century. Montour Falls was an important trade stop and travel hub, playing an important role on the Seneca Lake inlet when the Chemung Canal was built in 1827 to connect Seneca Lake with the Chemung River. Homes in the Historic District offer a glimpse into this era.
Montour Falls Attractions Eagle Cliff Falls in Havana Glen Park

Serene and scenic, the Havana Glen Park is a nature lover’s destination. With mosses and ferns, the glen has the beautiful Eagle Cliff Falls. In addition, there are playgrounds, picnic areas and hiking trails along the McClure Creek. As you hike up the trail you will find several small waterfalls in your path. The place is perfect to spend a day outdoors with your family. Call ahead to make camping reservations and to check on COVID protocols.
Montour Falls Historic Loop Trail
cnyhiking.com/MontourFallsHistoricLoopTrail.htm The Montour Falls Historic Loop Trail (MFHLT) was created by the Finger Lakes Trail Conference and is part of the nearly 1,000-mile Finger Lakes Trail System. The MFHLT is around 5-miles and features three waterfalls, including She-Qua-Ga Falls, Eagle Cliff Falls and Deckertown Falls. The hike is described as easy, mostly level walking. The Finger Lakes Trail Conference (www.fingerlakestrail.org) features a special map of the Montour Falls Historic Loop Trail with description that they sell on their website.
Newfield Covered Bridge
From NY 13 go into the town of Newfield. The Bridge is located on Bridge St. nycoveredbridges.org/newfield Built in the1850s, the Newfield Bridge is the oldest covered bridge in New York State that still supports daily traffic. Saved from being torn down in the 60s by dedicated citizens, the bridge was restored in 1972,

Montour Falls raising the entire bridge a foot, increasing the height of the portal entrances and adding two additional trusses. By 1998, a large-scale restoration included abutment and bank stabilization, new decking and roofing, a pedestrian bridge, the Musser overlook and a picnic area. Located close to Montour Falls, make a stop and enjoy this picturesque touch of history.
She-Qua-Ga Falls
Dropping 156-feet into the “Glorious T,” She-quaga Falls seems to flow right into the heart of Montour Falls. Located at the intersection of Main and
Genesee Streets, it is a big part of the Montour Falls Historic District. Two dozen structures line Genesee Street, including the courthouse, sheriff’s office, the lovely Montour Memorial Library and many well-kept 19th-century homes. Known as Tumbling Waters to Native Americans, She-qua-ga Falls is often referred to simply as Montour Falls by those having difficulty pronouncing the native name. From the park, built at the base of the falls, banks of lights create a beautiful night setting. Mill Creek Bridge spans the head of the falls and offers another great view of the town and the waterfall.

At the village edge is Fillmore Glen State Park with nature trails, campsites, picnic pavilions and a replica of the log cabin in which native son, U.S. President Millard Fillmore, was born.The village boasts a variety of examples of 19th and 20th century architecture, many of which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Fillmore Auto Show & Flea Market is the summer’s big event, taking place annually on the Sunday before Labor Day.

enn Yan, the largest town on Y-shaped Keuka Lake, traces its unusual name to its early Pennsylvania and Yankee settlers, many of whom came to Yates County as followers of Jemima Wilkinson, the first American born woman to form a religious society in America, and her group, the “Society of Universal Friends.” Old Order Mennonite families are recent arrivals to the area. Beginning in 1974, many families of the Groffdale Conference Mennonite Church moved to Yates County from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, seeking affordable farmland. The Yates County Old Order Mennonites settlement is the largest horse-and-buggy community in the state of New York. If you are a boating enthusiast, you probably have heard of or ridden on a wooden or fiberglass boat built by the Penn Yan Boat Company. The company, established in 1921 by a German native, Charles A. Hermann, was known for its patented “Tunnel Drive” concept, which provided better boat speed and stability. Today, Penn Yan’s Main Street offers a friendly place to stroll with its eclectic mix of vintage architecture, art gallery, bookstore, shops and restaurants. The community prides itself in looking after each other and in being approachable. Stop in at the Visitors Center on NY Route 14A just south of the village and ask for the “historic Main Street Walking Tour,” which will give you the details on this National Register Historic District.

Yates County History Center: L. Caroline Underwood, Oliver House & Scherer Carriage House Museums

Five major rooms are maintained as Victorian period rooms with many of the home’s original furnishings. Formerly Yates County Genealogical & Historical Society, it is one of the oldest in NYS, actively collecting, preserving and interpreting history since 1860. Its collections of over 50,000 artifacts date from the mid-1700s and include magnificent costumes, an impressive 6,000 digital images, and the foremost collection of Jemima Wilkinson artifacts in the United States. The Underwood Museum houses a unique collection, from swizzle sticks to pink porcelain pigs, while the Scherer Carriage House is home to the permanent Jemima Wilkinson collection. Keuka Lake Outlet Trail & Preservation Area

The trail access is behind the vendor booth, to your left, as you are looking at the field.) Part natural wonder and part “industrial archaeology,” the 7-mile Keuka Lake Outlet Trail is built on the track bed of the old Fall Brook Railroad (1884-1974), which, in turn, followed the towpath of the historic Crooked Lake Canal (1833-1877) that once connected Keuka and Seneca lakes by dropping 270 feet over 8 miles through the ravine creat-
ed by the Keuka Outlet Creek. Lining the trail are remnants of the old gristmills, sawmills and distilleries. Remnants of the Crooked Lake Canal, with its 27 locks, run along the north side of the outlet. ixteen miles long and one of the cleanest lakes in the world, Skaneateles Lake is the eastern gateway to the Finger Lakes. Abraham Lincoln’s Secretary of State, William Seward from Auburn, is reported to have claimed it as “the most beautiful body of water in the world.” The Village of Skaneateles on the northern tip of the lake is a much-loved summer destination filled with boutique shops, excellent restaurants and a lakeside park with a picture-perfect gazebo and long pier stretching over the crystal-clear water. Baskets of summer flowers, lovely trees and inviting park benches lead the way through Main Street’s Historic Business District past many buildings listed now on the National Register of Historic Places. - burg, as the locals call Trumansburg, is a short drive north of Ithaca on the west side of Cayuga Lake. Nearby is Taughannock Falls State Park, featuring one of the tallest waterfalls east of the Rocky Mountains. Enjoy Trumansburg’s eclectic downtown shopping district right on Main Street. Known for funky pubs, delectable eateries, and unique shops, you can sip coffee, indulge in pizza, ice cream and handmade chocolate with the kids at the community playground, pick up organic essentials at the natural grocery store and shop for clothes, jewelry, accessories, art, home goods, and eco-friendly gifts & goodies at one of many great local retailers. The village, incorporated in 1872, was a mill town and commercial center for the agricultural community from its inception until the Second World War. In the latter half of the 20th century, the village became home to many faculty and staff at nearby Cornell University and Ithaca College, as well as many musicians. Between 1961-70, Robert Moog built electronic music equipment including Theremins and his famous synthesizers in Trumansburg.

Labrador Hollow Accessible Boardwalk: Nearly 2,000 feet in length, this newly rebuilt boardwalk is accessible to those with mobility impairments and traverses a diverse wetland complex. An accessible trail leading to Tinker Falls is also available and Labrador Pond features an accessible fishing pier on the west side of the pond near the hand boat launch.

Tully is the largest of six glacial lakes clustered together, collectively known as the Tully Lakes, in a wide valley bordered by rounded hills. 234 acres in size with a maximum depth of 30-ft./10 m., it is ideal for kayaking, canoeing, and quiet motors. Extremely irregular in shape, Tully Lake provides boaters with interesting coves and bays to explore. There is only one public boat launch site. To access this site, take Song Lake Crossing Road in the Town of Preble (Cortland County) at the southern end of Tully Lake to Saulsbury Road. Turn north. Follow Saulsbury Road a short distance to Friendly Shores Road, which will be on the left. Follow this as it curves around to the right. The boat launch is at the end of this road. Green Lake Beach, located just a few minutes from the village of Tully, this is Tully’s only public beach. Operated by Tully Parks & Recreation, it is fully staffed by certified lifeguards and features swim lessons, a sandy beach, a dock and a diving board.

Watkins Glen State Park

Within two miles the Glen’s stream descends 400 feet past 200-foot cliffs, generating 19 waterfalls along its course. The gorge path winds over and under waterfalls and through the spray of Cavern Cascade. Rim trails overlook the gorge. Campers and day-visitors can enjoy the Olympic-size pool, scheduled summer tours through the gorge, tent and trailer campsites, picnic facilities and excellent fishing in nearby Seneca Lake or Catherine Creek. eedsport is part of the Central New York Military Tract that was reserved for veterans of the American Revolutionary War, and later became an important part of the Erie Canal, west of Syracuse. Originally named “Weed’s Basin” because the town had a basin (boat turnaround) during the Erie Canal era, the name was later changed to Weedsport. Visit Centreport Aqueduct and Aqueduct Park to get a feel for what it took to build the Erie Canal, the trade route that opened the United States to Westward expansion.
Weedsport Attractions Cross Lake
Between Jordan and Meridian dec.ny.gov Cross Lake is basically a widening of the Seneca River as the river flows through the lower third of the lake. According to the Department of Environmental Conservation, “Cross Lake is probably best known for producing some large northern pike with fish in the 15- pound range being taken most years. Walleye, tiger musky, northern pike, largemouth and smallmouth bass are the main game fish found in the lake.” A DEC launch on Seneca River provides public access to Cross Lake. It is located on Bonita Bridge Road, 2 miles east of the Village of Weedsport. Hand launch. 10 cars and trailers. Several marinas also offer services. Make sure you have your fishing license in hand and check regulations.

The Erie Canal was the engineering marvel of its time and this is a great place to study its engineering ingenuity. Located in the town of Brutus near Weedsport, the historic Centerport Aqueduct was opened in 1855 and originally carried the Erie Canal over a confluence of North and Cold Springs Brooks. It was named “Centre Port” Aqueduct because it was located almost in the exact middle of Section 7 of the Erie Canal. It is a three-span structure that was constructed with stone abutments and wooden beams made from white oak and pine. The trough was made from hemlock. It is one of the original 33 aqueducts built during the construction of the Erie Canal. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Aqueduct is unusual as it incorporates a dam into the stonework structure. The park has several picnic tables and small grills but does not have restrooms or electricity available. All trash must be removed. Hours: dawn to dusk.
Old Brutus Historical Society

Permanent displays feature an old-time kitchen, a rural one-room schoolhouse, an Erie Canal canal boat cabin, craftsman tools, farm tools and items that were once manufactured in the area. A beautiful series of wall-size murals depicting canal life grace the exterior walls. The Society also maintains extensive genealogy files. Weedsport is in the migration path of Canada geese and ducks and is a gathering place for thousands of birds as they head north for the summer. Fish for perch, brown trout, bream, pickerel, bowfin, smallmouth bass, blue gill and northern pike. Formerly known as Forest Lake and used for ice harvesting before refrigeration, the pond is accessed today via Parker Pond Gun Shop on Short Cut Road. Otter is a small, peaceful lake in Cato covering about 277 acres. Like most glacial lakes in the region, Otter runs south to north and is mostly surrounded by wetlands.
