Willy’s son, Frederick Frank took over leadership of the winery in 1993 and expanded production with the introduction of a value brand, Salmon Run, which is in honor of the majestic landlocked salmon and beautiful Keuka Lake. Fred’s years of studying business and agriculture at Cornell University and the time spent studying viticulture and enology in Germany helped prepare him to take over the family business. Under Fred’s leadership, along with the help of his cousin and vineyard manager, Eric Volz, the winery has been able to increase both its production and its number of medals earned. Fred looks forward to one day turning over the reins to his son, Kyle Konstantin, who hopes to continue as the fourth generation of Franks at the winery. Kyle will begin studying enology and viticulture at Cornell University in 2010. Dr. Frank’s Wine Cellars is proud of its international winemaking team with each member bringing in their particular expertise. The talented group includes winemakers from California, Australia, France and Germany. The focus on world class wines continues with each generation of the family, each member living up to the Frank Family tradition of excellence.

“Greatest Wine Producer in the Northeast” Chateau Frank Blanc de Noirs is produced from the red skinned Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier grapes, grown in our own Finger Lakes vineyards. These grapes are hand picked, then gently and slowly pressed so as to extract their superb fruit flavors without any of their color. With its assertive flavors, this style of wine makes a perfect accompaniment to shrimp or asparagus spears. Chateau Frank Brut presents the characteristics of a French Champagne with its toasty yeast character, persistent foam and tiny bubbles. A balance is achieved between the fruity contributions of the Pinot Noir and the acidic backbone of the Chardonnay resulting in a long clean finish. The Brut shows complexity with layers of fruit, mineral characters, and an enduring creamy finish. Try with sushi. Chateau Frank Blanc de Blancs presents typical complexity and delicate flavors, exemplifying the traditional Blanc de Blancs style. A crisp acidity accompanied by citrus, floral and hazelnut aromas makes this medium bodied sparkling wine very pleasant. Extended lees aging gives it noticeable yeast autolysis character with notes of toast and honey. Serve with rich foods such as smoked salmon.
Wine Report 2009, 2008, 2007, 2006 & 2005
This delicious, fruity style sparkling wine is very inviting and even easier to drink. Following the Cremant method, the Célèbre is aged “sur lies” after the estate tirage and is made entirely from the Riesling grape. Apple, honey and spicy aromas on a solid acidic backbone give this wine a great balance and fruit forwardness. Serve with pastries, brunch, seafood and mild cheese dishes.
In September of 2009, the New York Times published an article on Rieslings and the New York favorite was the Dr. Frank Dry Riesling. Writer Eric Asimov states, “Two Finger Lakes wines from the two leading New York producers, Dr. Konstantin Frank and Hermann J. Wiemer ... I gave the edge to the Dr. Frank because it had a bit more of a mineral character than the Wiemer.” For the fifth year in a row Dr. Frank’s Vinifera Wine Cellars was named the “Greatest Wine Producer in the Atlantic Northeast” by Wine Report 2009, 2008, 2007, 2006 and 2005! Dr. Frank’s was delighted to be voted “Best Regional Winery” by Rochester, New York’s City Newspaper. Every year City asks Rochesterians what their top picks are for the best restaurants, businesses and things to do in the Greater Rochester area and we are proud to be the number one winery pick. Thank you to everyone who voted for us! Tara Q. Thomas, writer of The Pocket Idiot’s Guide to Wine, describes Rieslings of the Finger Lakes to be “... remarkably like Germany’s - lean, crisp and stony.” She notes that there are a few great Riesling vintners in California and Washington “... but nothing to match those from New York State.” Thomas specifically points out the Dr. Frank name as one to look for from NY State. The Wegmans Holiday Menu recommends our Salmon Run Riesling with finfish, shellfish or pan-Asian cuisine. Wegmans describes, “Crisp minerality, floral elements and pear/ apple notes make this NY Riesling stand out.”
This sparkling Rosé offers very fruity red berry aromas and is made entirely from estate grown Pinot Meunier grapes. Like the Célèbre, the Célèbre Rosé follows the Cremant method and is aged “sur lies” after the estate tirage. It is then riddled by hand or gyropalette prior to disgorging. With its appealing color and forward fruitiness, this is a sparkling wine to please everybody. Serve with chicken, fish and light pasta.
The Menu also recommended the Dr. Frank Chardonnay in their winter issue, stating, “This is a nice, dry Chard with buttery notes and a not-too-oaky crispness.”
