Finlay Geddes Part 2 Architectural Assistant Selected Works November 2018

Finlay Geddes BSc PGDip Throughout my studies and work in practice, I have been consistently passionate about: an architectural process that listens to people and what they want from their buildings; and an architecture that is derived from history and context, interpreted in contemporary language and form. I believe that an understanding of history, thorough design solutions, and traditional craft, is integral to creating architecture with longevity. My strong ambition is to become further involved in, and contribute to, the Scottish and international architectural community via discourse.

Thesis: Pastiche Propaganda Pockets Strathclyde University/Dalhousie University Tutors: David Page & Page\Park staff For final year thesis, I sought to study an issue that I felt concerned me and that I could provide a real solution. The thesis sought to research Scotland’s suburban housing and address the many problems with this. The project was intended as a ‘propaganda’ - showcasing a new format of suburban housing to incite change and conversation on the topic. The result was a diverse, vibrant are of ‘suburban’ housing with nature and life at it’s core - a real alternative to the current norm.

Masterplan. The site developed was a brown field in Paisley as opposed to green field as is convention.

Landscape plan. Amenities were provided by regenerating industrial buildings and adding amenities within the new tenemental blocks.

Detail elevation. The aesthetic and form of the housing plays on the ‘pastiche’ in current suburbs - taking precedent from tradition.

Govan Bath House Strathclyde University Tutors: Lyle Chrystie & Gordon McGregor Govan has experienced a loss of community and feels fragmented since the decline of shipbuilding - contributing to the area’s deprivation. A bath house in Govan was seen as an opportunity to have the power to reignite a community spirit. The approach was taken to locate the bath house addressing both the River Clyde and a rejuvenated market square.

Location plan. Corten steel façades and timber lined interiors offer a simplicity of material and hark back to the area’s industrial past.

Model photo montage facing new square (1:100). The form and aesthetic offer a contemporary reminder of shipyard buildings, in the civic memory of Govan people.

Govan Youth Hospice Strathclyde University Tutors: Lyle Chrystie & Gordon McGregor As an introduction to Govan, the youth hospice project was a unique project requiring understanding of a variety of sectors. The youth hospice is intended to have a simple form but with hidden depths and alcoves within it’s double skin brick walls. A sense of security and calm, inspired by the Old Govan Church behind the site, is created through these brick walls.
