Leading the way SUSTAI NAB I L I TY is one of the key drivers in our new strategy, as we strive for carbon neutrality. One of our many goals is to halve single-use plastics in our catering services by the end of 2022. We’ve already taken several concrete steps in this direction and reduced both the amount and type of packaging materials of our buy-on-board selection by 50 per cent. For example, single portion milk packets have already been replaced with milk poured from a carton and this year we will exchange plastic cutlery with wooden forks, knives, and spoons. Our amenity kits have also been revamped on many levels from their packaging to their contents – for example, our slippers are made from recycled PET, and many other products made from PET will soon join them. Our long-term goal is to decrease our annual plastic use by 230 tonnes. We’ve already managed to reduce 34 per cent of this target amount – almost 80 tonnes – with another 150 tonnes to be reduced within the next two years. Wishing you a happy new year and a pleasant flight,
Our goal is to decrease annual plastic use by 230 tonnes.

THE NEW SQUEEZE a hug sometimes. But could a cuddle with a stranger make you happier? Yes, if you ask London-based Nordic Cuddle, a company offering licensed and restorative cuddle sessions from one of the team of professional huggers. If the thought of cuddling with a stranger feels odd, think of the nurturing and comforting relationship between a mother and child. If there were more touch in the world, there would be less disease and fewer wars, according to leading touch advocate and the Finnish co-founder of Nordic Cuddle, Rebekka Mikkola.

f you happen to run into Malin Åkerman’s son Sebastian in an LA restroom, be sure to use the hand dryer, not the paper towels – or you might find yourself scolded for “killing trees” by a very exasperated six-year-old. Like her son, Åkerman isn’t shy when it comes to taking a stand for the planet. The Swedish-born, Toronto-raised actress grew passionate about environmentalism after moving to LA and discovering that movie sets are among the most wasteful places on earth. “I grew up composting and recycling, so it was a shock. To this day hundreds of plastic bottles are wasted on movie sets because no recycling is organised. I wanted to make a difference, especially now that I’m a mom. We have a responsibility to the next generation,” says the star of the hit show Billions and movies such as Rampage and Netflix’s upcoming The Sleepover. And while some celebrities just talk the talk, Åkerman is not afraid to walk it, too. When shooting a picture, she insists on “greening the set,”
requiring producers to take steps such as replacing print with emailed scripts and swapping out disposable bottles for reusable ones. The glamorous do-gooder also spreads the green gospel by planting trees, visiting schools, and taking part in campaigns as a board member of the Environmental Media Association, a nonprofit organisation that raises environmental awareness in collaboration with the entertainment industry. Also an outspoken critic of Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement, she finds it “sad and unnerving” that the Trump administration has upturned many Obama-era policies aiming to curb climate change. “Climate change is a scientifically proven fact, so it’s mind-boggling to me that anyone would deny it,” says Åkerman.

I show him pictures of what plastic does to animals in the wild, so when we eat out, he immediately asks for a real glass instead of a disposable cup,” says the proud mum. While striving to reduce her carbon footprint by favouring staycations, Åkerman “cannot avoid” flying due to her close ties with Sweden. “I’m not willing to give up family time, especially while my son is growing up. I look forward to the day that airlines switch to biofuels,” she says. Åkerman has clocked up many air miles over the past year during the shooting of her first-ever Swedish film, A Piece of My Heart directed by Edward af Sillén. “It’s a fun summer romance based on music by Sweden’s own Bruce Springsteen, Tomas Ledin. Sweden is a huge part of me, so it was fun to do a movie in my mother tongue,” says the bilingual actress, who spent her childhood summers in Sweden. “Sweden will always be home. Like most Swedes, I’m quite liberal and humanitarian. I go with logic and grew up believing that sustainability should be part of everyday life. I guess my environmentalism stems from my Nordic roots.”
“Buy local, avoid disposables, and unplug devices when you aren’t using them. Small steps can make a big difference,” urges activist Malin Åkerman.

Pointillism with plants: Julius VĂŚrnes Iversen is inspired by the post-Impressionist paintings of Georges Seurat.

“Modern floral designs are closer to art installations than bouquets,” says Iversen.
P
lants make us happy. They relax and inspire. They lower stress levels, filter toxins, and provide oxygen, yet our hyperengaged urban existence has afflicted us with “plant blindness” – a condition of alienation from our silent vegetal friends. In Copenhagen, a new generation of floral aesthetes are rekindling the deep connection between plants and people by “rewilding” interiors and transforming floristry into an art form of multisensory surprises.
ARS BOTANICA

One of the city’s boldest botanical innovators is Julius Værnes Iversen, who humbly dubs himself a “florist,” but this label does justice only when paired with a prefix such as “avant-garde.” When a customer drops in for a Friday bouquet (the traditional way to kick off a hygge-ful weekend in Denmark), they are likely to walk out with a head-turning spray of zingy shellflowers and wispy asparagus fronds – anything but your average pretty posy. His studio, Tableau, looks more like a gallery than a florist shop, with artful clusters of Monstera deliciosa displayed in metal tubes against brutalist raw concrete. Tableau in fact doubles as an art gallery displaying floral creations alongside temporary exhibitions of plantthemed art. But what you see in the studio is just a miniature foretaste of Iversen’s grandly flowering ideas. Given the chance, he likes to work big and conceptual, creating massive site-specific pieces for public spaces. “One of my favourites was an installation I made for Berlin’s Adlon Hotel. It was a floral arrangement trapped >
“Less is more” is Iversen’s interior philosophy. “Most flower shops are too much! I wanted a super-minimalist space,” he says.
“As cities grow bigger, people feel an urge to bring back more green into their lives.”

in a giant Plexiglas cube, reflecting how the beautiful building was taken over by the Nazis,” describes Iversen. The son of a florist, Iversen has been working with flowers since he was 12 and says he feels “tremendously lucky” to be riding the crest of the recent floral comeback. “Floral design has become super-trendy over the past five years. As cities grow bigger, green spaces sadly grow smaller, so people feel a deep urge to bring back more green into their lives.”
BURLESQUE IKEBANA Thilde Kristensen felt the green urge so strongly that she quit her job in communications and founded the
Poppykalas floral design studio three years ago without any fixed concept beyond a desire “to create her own happy universe.” Radiating calm as she inserts coralhued blooms into a six-foot garland suspended from the ceiling, she seems serenely unhurried despite her looming deadline. The unfinished installation she is slowly assembling must be delivered to a major fashion house by the following morning. “Working with flowers is a meditative process. That’s why I got into floral design in the first place. It’s a form of therapy,” she says. Kristensen’s style of transforming public spaces is strikingly different
Kristensen named her studio “poppy party” as a tribute to her grandmother’s colourful garden.

from Iversen’s architectural brutalism. Some might call it “romantic,” “ultrafeminine,” or “naïve,” but her biting splashes of acid green, shocking blue, and psychedelic crimson add an engaging burlesque element to her ikebana-inspired arrangements. “I love enriching large spaces by letting flowers spill out of vases and climb over walls and floors. Flowers are an emotional medium, so I want people to connect with my work on a visceral level, with their whole bodies,” she says. Kristensen pays special attention to the olfactory sensations awakened by her floral art. “I try to add magical fragrances to my installations using flowers such as lemony pea vines.
In the modern world, we experience things two-dimensionally, only with our eyes and ears, but to be truly happy, we should engage all our senses.” The designer sees florals as a healing antidote to the stress of modern life. “People in big cities are losing themselves. We spend too much time on our phones and in our heads. Plants help us to reconnect with Mother Earth by grounding us in the moment,” she reflects.
HEALING JUNGLES A novel form of botanical therapy is offered by Plant København, a studio
that designs lush evergreen interiors for public spaces. Their two boutiques in the hip neighbourhoods of Norrebrø and Østerbro are luxuriant oases with a clean-lined Scandinavian design aesthetic. “We started out specialising in cacti, but two years ago we changed our universe from desert to jungle. Clients wanted a more tropical vibe,” says Cecilie Krawack, a former city planner who runs the business together with childhood friends Maja and Gro Samsø Bastian. “We have only one strict rule: No cut flowers! Every plant needs roots,” asserts Krawack. Chatting softly to a calathea ornata as she gently

“A small corner of greenery can alleviate climate angst.” “In both homes and public spaces, plants transform spaces in ways that enhance our wellbeing,” says Cecilie Krawack.

untangles its roots, Krawack enjoys the daily physical contact with big pots, especially the sensation of plunging her hands in soil. “I’m always exhausted in a good way after a day at work,” she says. Every second week she bikes around the city to care for greenery in restaurants, offices, and other public spaces. Talking to the plants is part of the service: “Each one has a special personality,” she notes warmly. “It’s wonderful to see the effect that plants have on people who work with computers. Their mere proximity has a cleansing effect on the mind. They also clean the air and do good for your body,” she adds.
Plant København takes an openminded approach to working with all kinds of clients. “My favourite project was working with Copenhagen’s famous Noma restaurant. They asked us to decorate the interior with odd-looking plants to match the personalities of staff members. It was great fun!” she recalls. Krawack sees Plant København as responding to a real social need. “The plant trend relates to bigger issues like climate change. For decades, there has been a growing distance between plants and people, but now urban dwellers miss the connection. Having a small corner of greenery in your home can even help to alleviate climate angst.”

n an attempt to out-do our colleagues and stay on top of our game, many of us are willing to work crazy hours, give up vacations, and neglect our families and ourselves all to get ahead at work. Is all that hard work really worth it? Or are we burning out faster than the average Tinder date? Emma Seppälä is science director at the Center for Compassion and Altruism Research and Education at Stanford University and the author of The Happiness Track: How to Apply the Science of Happiness to Accelerate Your Success. According to her, it’s pretty much impossible to achieve real success without some degree of fun and happiness. One of the biggest myths, Seppälä says, is that stress is really important for us to get things done. “Stress is meant to save your life; it’s not meant to be a constant state of mind. It depletes your immune system, focus, memory – literally everything,” she says. Sure, a less stressed work life sounds great, but is it really possible to achieve? According to Seppälä, increasing your happiness and lowering your stress is simpler than you might think. “Research shows that the greatest form of happiness comes from living a life of service, meaning, and kindness – both to others and to self,” she says. Let’s start with serving others. Being of service to other doesn’t mean you have to magically transform into the Dalai Lama. Seppälä says it’s an attitude and state of mind that you can adopt right now. You can go into your office and say: “I want to be someone who adds joy, not stress.”
Research shows that people like this are healthier, live longer, recover from disease faster, and have resilience in terms of their health and wellbeing, which Seppälä describes as nothing short of “spectacular.” So what about serving yourself? All too many of us focus on what we think will bring us happiness, Seppälä says. Things like money, fame, power, and owning more stuff. But what the research shows, she says, is that people who focus on material happiness actually tend to be unhealthier and unhappier than those who focus on “something bigger.” “Happiness from material things doesn’t last and you want more as soon as you get that fix. You want more chocolate, more sex, more likes,” she says. What will make you happier, Seppälä says, is to put aside some of your time for doing absolutely nothing. “We take in over 65,000 gigabytes of information every day,” Seppälä says. “That’s enough to kill a computer in a week.” What’s the best way to declutter your mind in the era of extreme information overload? Meditation, time spent in nature, or quiet time spent doing whatever it is that makes you happy. Both meditation and spending time in nature have been proven to lead to greater emotional regulation and restoration, wellbeing, happiness, and focus – all of which are good for your personal life and your work. When people are able to completely detach from work and connect with themselves, they come back happier, more creative, more innovative and… drum roll please… more successful!
“I want to be someone who adds joy, not stress.”
“it’s pretty much impossible to achieve real success without some degree of fun and happiness,” says Emma Seppälä.

hat kind of person springs to mind when someone says “CEO?” Most people think of a white man simply because they hold the majority of these positions. The stereotype unconsciously limits the variety of people we can imagine serving in such a role. It might also limit the dreams of people who don’t fit in that stereotype. According to a study done at Harvard, female students perform better in science when their textbooks include images of women scientists. The risk of stark stereotypes is real and it has a name: stereotype threat. When an individual faces a negative stereotype about their own group – be it women, ethnic minorities, or immigrants – studies suggest that it can have an actual impact on performance. In a perfect world, everyone would be free to pursue their ultimate dream career without stereotypes standing in their way. But this is not the case, not even in the Nordic countries. Finland ranks at the bottom end of the spectrum of OECD member states with the most gendered workforces, with men tending to work in engineering and women in care professions.
Our societies are diverse, but our industries and workforces don’t reflect it yet. Work roles are lagging behind in both diversity and inclusion. For example, a recently published research in Finland proved how people with foreign names were much less likely to be invited for job interviews. Luckily, entrepreneurs and investors are starting to wake up to this and drive change. International tech and consulting companies are increasingly investing in diversity and inclusivity. Why are they doing it? The answer is simple: They want to recruit and retain the best people. It is clear that diversity and inclusivity don’t happen by magic. It takes continuous effort to be truly inclusive and take into account all minorities such as people with disabilities and gender minorities. Finland made international news when Sanna Marin, a 34-year-old woman raised in a LGBTQ+ family, was recently appointed Prime Minister of Finland. The amount of international attention says something about how rare this is. Seeing a person like her leading the country might inspire and open many new minds to dream of becoming future prime ministers or leaders in other fields. I admit, it feels really empowering.
Work roles are lagging behind in diversity and inclusion.

Sweet boredom Our fear of boredom is making us dull. To escape existential weariness, we might need to learn to embrace moments of micro-dullness and rediscover the lost art of daydreaming. TEXT ELISA SUOKKO ILLUSTRATION ANJA REPONEN
O
nce upon a time there was no such thing as boredom. Before the mid-19th century, nothing was boring and no one was bored. Ever. At least not in those terms. The word “boredom” was introduced into the English language only in those early decades of the Second Industrial Revolution. Life was obviously monotonous back then, too – imagine 14 hours of farm work per day, or endless tea-drinking with your socialite cousins – but monotony was then considered a normal part of life. The risk of tedium really became an issue around the 1950s, when psychologists diagnosed boredom as an emotional condition that had to be cured with stimulation. Once we found a word for it, no one wanted it. Not until now. These are among the intriguing details shared by professors Susan J. Matt and Luke Fernandez, who trace the history of American emotions in their profoundly non-boring book Bored, Angry, Lonely, Stupid: Changing Feelings about Technology, from the Telegraph to Twitter (Harvard University Press, 2019). Today, boredom is trending. Magazines are quoting Friedrich Nietzsche and recent psychological research, both of which deliver the same message: Boredom feeds creativity. Endless stimulation and phone-fiddling is in fact detrimental to our minds. If our eyes don’t get to stare at a wall/the sky/the ocean every once in a while, our brain becomes dull. If you count all the good ideas you’ve ever had in the shower and compare them to the brainstorms
you’ve had while fiddling on your phone, you’re likely to undersign Nietzsche’s theory. Fernandez and Matt, for their part, suggest that people these days feel bored quite often, but it’s not the kind of old-school boredom that makes our thoughts and time fly. It’s something worse. “Work is getting more repetitive. In the early 20th century, it was the assembly line workers who felt bored at work. These days, white-collar workers are struggling as well, so they bring entertainment to work to make it more tolerable,” Fernandez summarises. It seems that we are bored and entertained at the same time – an oxymoron not so long ago. Or was it? Fernandez and Matt quote research from the 1950s stating that people reportedly felt bored while watching TV, the go-to entertainment of that era. Based on the research conducted by Fernandez and Matt, people are less willing to feel bored these days. A century ago, boredom was felt but not feared. It was only after people started to long for a new kind of emotional fulfilment that boredom became something to avoid. “Today it [emotional fulfilment] means never being lonely, always being engaged and affirmed by others,” they write. Our lives these days are a constant struggle to find emotional fulfilment. In that struggle, we have accepted that we need to be working, developing ourselves, and interacting constantly. If we’re not, that means that we haven’t been able to land a demanding job, a lively circle of friends, a family, or a hot date. If we have a moment of idle time, placing ourselves at risk of potential boredom, something must be

wrong with us. We keep ourselves busy instead. “Some scholars differentiate between so-called micro-boredom and existential boredom. Paradoxically, in our constant attempt to dispel moments of micro-boredom, we develop existential boredom,” Fernandez says. This sounds like a daunting prospect. Something must be done about it! As we are living in the selfhelp era, here’s how: Once the problem has been identified, we ask for advice from an expert and try it at home.
DREAM OR NIGHTMARE? On this occasion, let’s ask a French author. Anais Vanel plunged head-first into moments of so-called idle time. Her autobiographical novel, Tout quitter (Flammarion, 2019), means “leave it all behind” in French. And that’s exactly what Vanel did in 2017. She quit her job in a Parisian publishing house, left her Haussmannian apartment, the parties, the terraces, and most of her belongings, and moved to a small town on the southeast coast of France known for its pine trees, surf, and sandy beaches. She knew no one there. “I wanted to cut off all that was keeping me busy to see what emerges from the silence. I needed to discover who I am without my job, friends, and city life,” she says. In her book, Vanel describes her transformation in brief, powerfully dense sentences. “I have a thousand and one shades of blue. Fire. I have sunsets over the ocean. Medusas. Weevers.
Octopuses. I have time. I have long afternoons for exploring. Long mornings for introspection. I have a board. I have waves.” What Vanel had was plenty of time on her hands, and not many premediated plans to fill it. She lived both the modern dream (the surfboard, the novel that came out of it), and the modern nightmare (nothing to distract you from your own thoughts). “I spent time alone to truly feel my emotions. At first, it was peaceful, but it changed soon. When you have time, you inevitably face all the wounds inside you,” Vanel says. Vanel, for her part, put some of that pain in her book, right next to celebrating the everyday pleasures of listening to beach sounds, sitting on a bench, chopping vegetables, and taking a nap. The story has a day-dreamy structure, interlinking observations about the past and the present. “As an adult, you feel the need to fill up your time. You schedule your work and plan your free time. I searched for a different rhythm and now I am present wherever I am,” writes Vanel. Maybe it’s ultimately not boredom that feeds personal creativity. Maybe it’s the ability to live in the moment and let moments take shape as they will – even if it’s not always pleasant for us. Maybe all it takes is, every now and then, to be utterly and boringly stuck with our own daydreams and nightmares. “Idle moments can be as meaningful as full moments,” professor Matt points out, with the historical insight of someone who has closely studied 150 years of reverie.

WE COMBAT ANIMAL DISEASES TOGETHER! We want to prevent serious animal diseases such as foot and mouth disease, classical swine fever and African swine fever from spreading to Finland. These and other animal diseases can be transmitted from one country to another by animals or by meat and dairy products even if they are packed for personal consumption or intended as gifts. Travelers like you play an important role in preventing the spread of animal diseases.
Don’t bring meat, meat products, milk and dairy products from non-EU countries to Finland! A ban on personal imports applies to meat and dairy products brought into Finland by travelers or ordered and sent through the post. The ban applies to foodstuffs intended for personal consumption or as gifts and to pet foods. If you have food products of animal origin with you, throw them in a waste container in the point of entry or contact Customs! Outside the EU, African swine fever has been detected in Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, Moldova, Georgia, Serbia, Africa, China as well as in many other countries in east and southeast Asia for instance. Although not dangerous to humans, the disease is deadly to pigs and keeps spreading from country to country if not stopped.
Bringing meat-containing products as presents and for personal use from an EU country to Finland At the moment, there are EU countries with cases of African swine fever. In those countries there are restriction areas and, as a rule, pork or wild boar meat or products containing these meats may not be imported from these areas into Finland. Import is allowed only under very strict criteria controlled by local authorities. However, the sales of these meat products within the country may be allowed. In the EU, the disease has been detected in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Belgium and Italy (Sardinia) for instance. It is difficult for travelers to know and prove from which area meat products originate and whether the products on sale meet all criteria. This is the reason why we recommend that people avoid importing any meat products containing pork or wild boar meat as presents or for personal use from countries with African swine fever. PLEASE NOTE! Never leave any food waste or scraps in the environment or places where they may be eaten by wildlife. Never give food waste or scraps to production animals or to pet pigs.
Thank you for helping us to prevent the spread of animal diseases. We wish you a pleasant journey! More information on private import:

AIMING FOR CARBON NEUTRALITY Sustainability continues to be a key driver for Finnair, with a new long-term target of carbon neutrality. To achieve this ambitious goal, Finnair will invest in new aircraft that produce less emissions, invest in biofuels and in the development of electric flying. To address the emissions that cannot be reduced by these measures, carbon offsetting remains important.

Volcanic views in Los Hervideros, Lanzarote. A rewarding sunrise in Bali after a sweaty hike.
Windy, white sand beaches near Corralejo, Fuerteventura.
Hooked on hills When things get hectic, Sini Haapala heads to the trails to wind down. are great for a nature lover. Some of my favourite places are the amazing cliffs of Los Hervideros in Lanzarote, the green and foggy hiking trails in the peninsula of Anaga, Tenerife, and the endless beauty of the windy beaches of Fuerteventura.

plants, waterfalls, little turtles, and butterflies. You can also hike up to Strawberry Hill to enjoy a great view over the city. BA L I is a such a wonderful destination with all of its amazing nature and wide variety of activities. Hiking to Mount Batur, which is an active volcano, at dawn is quite the physical experience – but the view makes up for the effort!

EU citizens , as well as citizens of Japan, South Korea, Australia, US, Canada, and New Zealand can use the automated gates as they depart. Citizens from other non-Schengen countries will be directed to the manned booths. In addition, there are separate queues for passengers travelling in large groups.
