Every move matters I ’ V E ALWAYS B E L I E VE D that to achieve difficult goals, every action counts whether it’s big or small. At Finnair, our aim is to be the best choice for responsible travellers. We are continually working to minimise our e nvironmental impact through a range of measures from reducing waste after flights and investing in more efficient aircraft like the A350 to recycling food waste to be used for gas-powered cars. We are also looking into broader solutions like expanding the use of sustainable aviation fuels and investigating in new technologies such as electric flying. Our customers can also play their part. Last January, we launched our Push for Change initiative which enables anyone to offset their emissions by supporting a certified carbon offset programme or the use of biofuels for a future flight. We are continually looking at every angle and action where we can make our operations as energy-efficient and sustainable as possible. Stay tuned! Wishing you a wonderful journey, Topi Manner

Are low interest rates making your hair turn grey? Today, getting a decent return on your investment can be a real challenge. But Evli’s Alternative Funds are a well-kept investment secret that can provide you with an attractive risk-adjusted expexted return. “ t he current low interest rate environment has forced investors to look for returns outside of the public market, especially in asset classes which offer a liquidity premium. As a result, the popularity of alternative investment funds is soaring. For institutional investors and highnet-worth individuals, it is still possible to find investment targets that provide an attractive return,” says Tero Tuominen, Managing Director and Head of Alternative Funds at Evli Fund Management Company.

Investing in real estate and unlisted companies Evli’s private market offerings consist of real estate funds and private equity funds. Evli offers three property funds investing exclusively in Finland, because a local touch is key in this asset class. Evli’s Residential Property Fund develops and builds rental houses on owned sites, Evli’s Healthcare Fund responds to the current demographic trend of an aging population by investing in properties rented to private and public care providers, and Evli Rental Yield Fund is building a well-diversified commercial property portfolio. In private equity, Evli Growth Partners Fund invests directly in unlisted growth companies in Finland and Europe, and Evli Private Equity Funds invest with top-performing global buyout managers in order to build a well-diversified global portfolio of unlisted companies.

Higher returns with the same risk “In a well-diversified investment portfolio, private market investments are an obvious component that can allow you to raise your expected return without increasing risk. This is a clear advantage that is utilised by almost all major institutional investors,” Tuominen says. Since private market investments are not actively traded, they are only suitable for investors who invest with a long horizon and can accept illiquidity.

Not just investing, but owning Private market investments are a very demanding and hands-on asset class where targets are typically hard to access, and single investments are large. This is why many investors use funds to get versatile exposure to this asset class. At Evli, private market investments are managed by a 15-person portfolio management team. “With private market investments, it’s not about just investing, but about owning. Typically, we acquire substantial ownership or the entire asset, and we must be actively involved in managing it. It is also a very exciting market. One of our most interesting recent investments at Evli Growth Partners is in TIER Mobility, Europe’s leading e-scooter company,” Tuominen explains. KEY FACTS: • Evli Bank Plc, founded in 1985, is one of Finland’s largest investment and asset management specialists. • Evli Fund Management Company Ltd has been the fastest growing fund management company in Finland in 2019, according to Investment Research Finland Ltd. Its assets currently under management amount to 9.35 billion euros (8/2019).

Every night at 7:30 pm an Echo performance projects images onto a wall of water in the lake accompanied by a soundtrack.

FIVE-STAR WONDER NOWH E RE is the old expression “location, location,” more apt than with one of Shanghai’s n ewest hotels. The five-star InterContinental Shanghai Wonderland hugs the side of an abandoned andesite quarry in the southwest Songjiang District, just 20 minutes from downtown. Shimao Group chairman Xu Rongmao had the vision for the project after discovering the abandoned 88-metre deep quarry. Describing it as a scar on the earth, he wanted to turn it into a treasure. “The potential beauty and drama of this incredible site and the challenges and opportunities it gave struck me immediately. To see it becoming reality after 12 years is a great feeling,” says lead architect Martin Jochman, who has seen the p roject through from beginning to end. “The massing elements of the hotel are

based on the shape of the quarry edge on which it sits and is ‘organically’ composed using three basic elements, inspired by the quarry and the surrounding environment itself,” says Jochman. A waterfall cascades down the cliff face opposite the hotel, and the former path taken by the quarrymen, illuminated at night by LED lights, zigzags its way down the cliff face. Sixteen of the hotel’s 18 floors are below ground level including two beneath the surface of the lake. All 336 rooms have views of the quarry but with the living rooms of the suites located underwater, each has a private aquarium. For the adventurous there is kayaking on the lake and rock climbing up the walls. And for the those with a head for heights the theme park next door has a zip line to whiz you over the crater. 

NAKED TRUTH Varberg on Sweden’s west coast is the country’s most spa-dense town. TEXT MICHA VAN DINTHER PHOTOS MIKAEL LUNDBLAD

BACK TO THE SOURCE people have travelled to the western Swedish coastal town of Varberg to bathe and drink themselves back to health and prosperity. Although the well that supplied the town with salubrious mineral water has long since dried up, it has paved the way for many a spa – all with their own claim to fame. Most of these still echo the local spa culture of yore, with rituals and treatments that honour traditional practices. A must when visiting Sweden’s principal spa town is going for a soak in heated sea water while being massaged with handharvested seaweed – a historic treatment that would set spa-goers back seven cents in 1913.

At the historic Varberg kallbadhus open-air bath, skinny-dipping is a requisite, with men and women given access to their own half of the stilted building. Each section has a separate sauna, which comes in handy when temperatures dip below zero. A short stroll further down the shore, lie Varberg’s two year-round nudist beaches – ladies are directed to Skarpe Nord, while gents are invited to drop their trunks at Goda Hopp.

A NEW GENERATION Varberg has always been a breeding ground for entrepreneurs and creatives, and in recent years a new generation is leaving its mark. A few summers ago, Rochanne Handing and André Pfeiffer acquired a small beach shack and converted it into a hotspot for food, music, and surf. In early 2018 Erik Diding, son of Hotell Havanna and Hotel Gästis founder Lasse Diding, inherited the family business and enlisted friends Marcus Karlsson and Daniel Ehn to join him in upgrading the Havanna property with an additional building for rooms. 

hat Lego fan wouldn’t want Stuart Harris’s job? As senior experience designer at Lego House, just down the road from Legoland in Billund, he’s the brains behind the brick, supervising the addition of elements and liaising with Lego-lovers around the globe. They like to talk about appealing to “children of all ages” in this themed Danish town, and Harris is an enthusiastic example of some of the more senior children. Lego House, opened in 2017, and Legoland are distinct entities, but both feed off and nurture the global affection for this most practical and expressive of play brands. Lego House was the brainchild of Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen, chairman of the Lego Group and member of the same Kirk Kristiansen family that founded the company here in 1932. The history collection in the basement of Lego House, added in response to fan community wishes, relates how the company made wooden toys until the famous brick with its interlocking tubes was developed in 1958. The name derives from an abbreviation of “play well” in Danish – leg godt – and appropriately, “lego” means “I put together” in Latin. Billund’s Legoland, the original of eight around the world and several Lego Discovery Centres, was conceived in the 1960s to demonstrate the versatility of the Lego system. But there is, and will only be, one Lego House – the Home of the Brick. Designed

to resemble an assembly of 21 white Lego bricks from outside, the interior focuses on a vast c entral “Tree of Creativity,” a metaphor for the company’s heritage. This creation is one of the biggest Lego builds ever, made from 6.3 million bricks, weighing over 20 tonnes and measuring 15.6 metres tall.

PLAY IS A SERIOUS MATTER

The name lego derives from an abbreviation in Danish of “play well” – leg godt. 38 BLUE WINGS NOVEMBER 2019

For Lego, play is a serious matter. “Kjeld had the dream for many years of an experience centre to help understand something that is very important to Lego, and that is ‘learning through play’,” says Harris. “He and his son Thomas (the next family member to move into the group leadership role) are very passionate about this. Learning through play is one of our main ethoses and all the experiences are designed with this in mind. We wanted to get something very hands-on, where you could realise the brick’s potential creativity. The ‘generic’ Lego brick is at the heart of the place,” says Harris. It can be central to the way that a child learns to interact with the world and to prepare for the kind of creative thought that the modern world increasingly requires. For older devotees, building with the iconic blocks is an absorbing alternative to online pursuits and also a distinct art form. Harris’s responsibilities include coming up with innovative ideas and to administer and maintain Lego House builds – devised by himself and by the legions of international fans of all ages.

A venue for fans, there is nothing else quite like Lego House anywhere in the world.

40 BLUE WINGS NOVEMBER 2019

Below: Morten Gravgaard at work. Right: A Lego House play area.

undamental to the design of the House was the F idea that it should be a venue for fans to exhibit their work, and Harris is in charge of sourcing and curating the fans’ work. Every September a “swapover” is planned, timed in connection with a major international fan event in Denmark. Billund has evolved into “Lego central,” and its facilities and infrastructure, including its sizeable international airport, have developed in response to Lego’s presence, not vice versa. Nearly all enterprises in this pleasant Danish rural town setting are linked in some way to Lego business and tourism. But was this the first choice for an ambitious, creative venture like Lego House? “There were many discussions about where to build the House but it was decided that it would be loyal to the brand to have it here in Billund, not in New York or somewhere more commercially obvious,” says Trine Nissen from sales and marketing. “It’s only 200 metres from where everything started in 1932. You won’t see anything like this anywhere else.”

LEGO LUNCH The element of play is present all around Lego House, including its three restaurants. To order at

Lego Gourmet, one selects tiny bricks of different colours and sizes to represent different items on the menu and inserts them into a table-top device. A digital screen whirs into action and shows animated Lego minifigure characters busy in the kitchen, chirping away in “Lego-ese.” When the order is ready, two robots sort meals in colour-coded brick boxes and deliver them to the canteen. And then there are the play areas that are located all over the building, where children, young and not so young, can – literally – dive into oceans of Lego bricks and lose themselves in creative experience. Four experience zones are coded: red for creative skills, blue for cognitive skills, green for social skills, and yellow for emotional skills. In case anybody is daunted by this sudden proliferation of Lego resources, blue-shirted members of a team of Lego play agents are always on hand. These are led by ten play heroes, part of a 200-strong permanent workforce. “Our day-to-day

job is to assist the guests in returning to childhood memories with Lego bricks and to help them start creating,” says play hero Mathias Thorning. “We want to kick-start those childhood memories so that one, two, or four hours later they want to show off what they’ve done – even the parents!”

AFOLS ARE NO FOOLS The House is clearly a hit with the public – prebooking is essential for all v isits – but their affections also endure for the venue’s cousin one kilometre up the road. Legoland, with its familyfriendly amusement park atmosphere, provides

a different, more expansive experience. This is augmented by the original Legoland Hotel and a new arrival, the Lego Castle Hotel with its colourfully-themed wizard and knight wings, where Lego dragons perch in the corner of the rooms and cupboards contain surprises. The lines are forming outside the Legoland gates 30 minutes before they are due to open and model shop assistant Morten Gravgaard is doing some last-minute checks in Miniland, the enchanting miniature re-creation of towns and cities that is probably the park’s most famous attraction. Trained as a baker, he prefers to work with the legendary bricks. “My job is to repair, replace, and build new Lego models,” says Gravgaard. Visitors are inspired to build by the models and creations they see in Legoland, he says. “There are plenty of adult fans of Lego – AFOLs – I know because I am one of them! It’s a kind of therapy, building in Lego.” Unlimited possibilities: It’s an explanation for Lego’s magic expressed by many fans, including Morten Gravgaard. It’s a magic that crosses borders, too. The best ideas are the simple ones, says Stuart Harris. “Lego holds together as if by glue – we call it clutch power – but you can always pull it apart. There is an element of under-rated sophistication about it, but it’s also very egalitarian. You can give the same bricks to everyone and depending on their imagination, cultural references, and background, they will create something different.” 

Help me, Antti!

D

efining Antti Holma is about as easy as catching steam in a butterfly net. He’s an actor, writer, poet, blogger, singer, and, since relocating to join his husband in New York last year, a full-time podcaster. Which title fits him best? “I’m asked this question daily in New York. Americans hate unclassifiable things!” responds Holma. “If I say I’m a comedian, they expect me to start cracking jokes, and I’m not funny socially. I usually just say I’m a disgraced celebrity from a small country who had to flee the paparazzi,” he cracks. (The “not socially funny” part, by the way, is flagrantly untrue.) Just as Holma’s professional title evades definition, so does his style of humour. There’s the buttonpushing crudeness of his podcast Radio Sodoma, “a terrible, terrible radio s tation that broadcasts in a hell-like place.” And then there’s the introspective musings of Auta Antti! (Help Me, Antti!), a podcast tackling topics from death to sex based on questions sent in by listeners, with Holma using his personal experiences to fuel acerbic yet compassionate observations on human foibles.

“I look at the ugliness of everyday interactions as honestly as I can. Life is sometimes funny and sometimes grim. I want to embrace that. For me humour is a way of getting under people’s skin and saying that nobody is good at life. We all suck at it, and that’s okay,” he says. Humour became Holma’s weapon of choice growing up as a closeted gay boy in a small rural town in Finland. “My life isn’t necessarily a lovely story about finding my voice. Growing up, I was an obnoxious selfexpression monster. Making noise was a way of protecting myself.” As a gay man – and thus a former walking punchline for the cisgender white men that long ruled the mainstream comedy space – Holma is excited to have witnessed the recent surge of talented LGBTQ artists making headlines. “The variety of platforms is amazing; from drag performances to anonymous online avatars. I like to think of comedy as an art where you have to express a point of view unambiguously. And although I’m not a political performer, when a gay man makes comedy, it’s a political act,” he says.

he phone rings. The caller who is unaware that James MacDonald is now officially a man asks to speak with the comedian’s former female self. “She’s not here,” he replies. “Are you her husband?” inquires the caller. “Maybe… psychically,” retorts MacDonald. The caller, growing anxious, queries: “But what have you done with your wife!?” Absurd real-life exchanges provide raw material for Gender Euphoria, the first stand-up act to bring transgender narrative to the Finnish comedy space. As a queer, transgender migrant (“from C anada, no less”), M acDonald uses details of his p ersonal life to fuel his unique brand of alt humour, mixing rollicking tales of gender transition with meditations on the zeitgeist and riffs of silly punning. “I’d been doing comedy as a crossdressing woman for a couple of years before I began medically transitioning in 2015. I could have disappeared for a couple of years and returned with a new name, but some of the funniest things happening to me were related to my transition, so it was only natural to put them in my comedy,” he reflects.

MacDonald debunks the clichéd erception of trans people as tragic p sufferers. “I was tired of seeing the narrative that we’re just one step down from suicidal. I’m quite a jolly person! Presenting the image of a well-adjusted, happy trans person is revolutionary in its own way,” he muses. “Actually I’d like to stop talking about being trans when I’m on stage, but whenever some kid comes up to me after a show and comes out to me – as the first person they’re ever coming out to – I realise that I can’t stop being here for the one person in 200 who can’t believe they’re being seen,” he adds. MacDonald admits that while there’s still work to be done to dispel latent transphobia, audiences have instantly warmed to his material. “People like listening to me. I present myself as an underdog but not a pushover. There’s something about being flawed that people can relate to,” ponders the self-confessed Shakespeare nerd. As it happens, MacDonald started out in theatre, but was “never quite right” for the rigid gender categories of conventional drama roles. “The beautiful thing about comedy is that you can be whoever you are… whoever that happens to be,” he says.

Firebrand Ali

A

li Jahangiri is tired of carrying the title of “official voice of diversity” in Finnish comedy. The Tehran-born stand-up star began his life in Finland in a refugee camp, where he rapidly mastered Finnish, showing a whipsmart genius for scathing repartee in his adopted tongue. He may not be the only alternative voice out there anymore, but he’s certainly been around the longest. Jahangiri began performing 15 years ago, when there was only one monthly stand-up club in Helsinki and certainly no other “brown dudes” up on stage. “I started doing comedy because I failed at everything else. I wasn’t a very good businessman and I’m very dyslexic. When I write it’s horrible,” he says in typical self-deprecating form. (He’s an economics graduate with a successful corporate career under his belt.) Jahangiri’s show is a cavalcade of verbal fireworks, targeting everything from racism to modern urban life, without shying away from poking fun at his own silliness. He’s an endearing agitator with a bubbly stage persona tempered by occasional blistering rants and ear-splitting expletives.

“To be honest I’ve encountered way less xenophobia than many of my friends, but if I have a medium like stand-up, I’m going to use to it to speak for the Somali girls and brown boys that don’t have the same platform,” he asserts. On stage he speaks from the vantage point of an Iranian Finn, but insists that he’s not trying to be political. “I just talk about my life. If my best friend happens to be transgender, gay, or Muslim, I talk about it. People always want to analyse how I’m trying to make a social impact, but I really just want to be funny,” he maintains. In the same breath he concedes that getting on stage is a political gesture. “Just me standing on stage with this beard is political, because my beard is not a hipster beard. Without it, I look like just another brown guy, but with the beard, I look like a brown guy on TV that represents an extreme ideology. And if people see that negative stereotype, it makes me work harder,” he says. Challenging comedy stereotypes is Jahangiri’s steadfast mission. “We comedians like to think of ourselves as the last warriors of freedom of speech, but comedy shouldn’t be a space for making marginalised people feel even more marginalised. The world around us has changed, and so must comedy.” 

Hi gh s takes How is aviation responding to customer demands for more environmentally friendly and sustainable aviation? TEXT TIM BIRD ILLUSTRATION JOLANDA JOKINEN

T

o celebrate its 85th anniversary in 2008, Finnair published a vision of future flying. Taking a look ahead another 85 years to 2093, this vision forecast that aviation would become even safer as a result of increased automation. Industry targets to eliminate carbon dioxide emissions by 50 per cent compared to the 2005 level would be achieved by means of more efficient, varied and environmentally sustainable aircraft. Space travel would become a more affordable reality for tourists, while specialised aircraft, skimming the oceans at low altitude, for example, from one highly-populated seaboard to another, would become commonplace. The most flexible airlines would survive in an increasingly competitive industry. This gaze into the future lets imaginations run free in speculating as to what aircraft would look like in the next millennium. Some of the imagined aircraft resembled giant flying saucers, some had transparent fuselages, while others were perceived as car-sized propeller-less helicopters. But it is striking how many of the less fanciful

predictions remain valid, especially with respect to the continuous development of aviation’s environmental sustainability. As predicted, airlines are reacting to the need to cut emissions and respond to climate change, working with aircraft manufacturers to introduce a range of sustainable technologies. “Airbus has already completed all the technical work and testing to certify all Airbus aircraft, including all in-service aircraft, to operate efficiently using certified alternative and synthetic fuels,” says Glenn Llewellyn, general manager, Electrification, at Airbus’s Corporate Technology Office in Toulouse. “These fuels already allow significant carbon dioxide reduction and are used by many airlines around the world. On top of these sustainable aviation fuels, Airbus is also looking at more disruptive ways to reduce emissions.”

Meeting emissions targets will help to put the brakes on climate change.

ELECTRICITY POWERS AHEAD According to Llewellyn, electrification is a significant axis for research. It is also the focus of the newly launched Nordic Network for Electric Aviation (NEA), bringing together 11 members, including Finnair, Icelandair, and SAS, for workshops and events to build knowledge and

Destination Tampere Region – where the mind relaxes Coffee and Chocolate

Sauna and Swimming

Lights and Views

As the nights are getting colder, we Finns need something warm and sweet. Luckily, the Tamperebased roasting factories create amazing coffee. Catch the local taste in coffee shops like Tampereen Paahtimo, Mokkamestarit, or Pirkanmaan Paahtimo. Dammenberg Chocolate Shop is situated in Lempäälä, 17 km from Tampere. They produce more than 800 different articles of chocolate.

After a sauna bath and winter swim you’ll almost feel born-again. Enjoy the dim light, hot steam – and then dip yourself into cold water. Paradoxically coldness warms you up. There are over 30 public saunas in the Tampere Region for anyone to enjoy this relaxing combination of hot and cold. Be careful though – you might end up totally hooked to the hormone boost and the afterglow of winter swimming.

From October until March, the streets of the Tampere city centre are illuminated with hundreds of lights. The best – and most romantic – place to admire the illuminated city is the landmark of the city, Näsinneula Observation Tower. Rising to 168 meters, from the tower you get to enjoy the view over the two surrounding lakes, most of the city and some of the neighbouring towns, too.

cooperation in the field. “In this project we are concretely creating the future of electric aviation, together, and taking an important step towards carbon-neutral flying,” says NEA project manager Maria Fiskerud. To achieve industry targets of reducing carbon dioxide, Airbus aims for the launch of hybrid or electric aircraft by the end of the 2030s. The company has already flown demonstration flights with small aircraft and flew the E-Fan 1.0 electric plane over the English Channel in July 2015. The E-Fan X demonstrator scheduled to fly in 2021 will be the most ambitious hybrid-electric project targeting commercial aviation to date, in preparation for the technology to enter service in the 2030s. “Reducing the weight of electrical energy storage devices is key to achieving our ambitions,” says Llewellyn. “We are opening battery labs and test centres to improve our knowledge on the topic. These are the Airbus China Innovation Centre in Shenzhen, at our Toulouse factory, and an E-Systems Test House in Munich to be opened by the end of 2019. Our ability to take these technologies and systems and integrate them into aircraft safely is also a key focus area,” he adds. Meanwhile in Finland, Finnair’s Push for Change initiative, launched in January 2019, offers customers a chance to support the use of biofuels as part of a broader environmental effort. The first two Push for Change flights from San Francisco to Helsinki in August 2019, operated with a 12 per cent biofuel mix, enabled a reduction in emissions of 16 tonnes per flight. The company also offsets carbon dioxide emissions from business travel flights made by its own personnel. Also significant is a fleet renewal programme with Airbus A350 XWB planes that are more fuel efficient than their predecessors.

Airbus’s main global competitor, Boeing, is similarly committed to accelerating new technologies, having produced a series of ecoDemonstrators since 2012. The latest was launched in 2018 and is being used to test more than 30 technologies aboard a Fed-Ex 777 freighter aircraft. Those technologies range from flight deck innovations that enhance safety to 100 per cent biofuel test flights.

QUIETER FLIGHTS Noise reduction is another area of development for Boeing and Airbus. Finnair passengers on Airbus A350 aircraft will already appreciate the quieter flight experience. “The A350 XWB is the quietest aircraft of its category. Airbus will go further and is committed to reduce perceived noise of flying aircraft by 65 per cent,” says Llewellyn. “We’re also working with partners across the industry including engine manufacturers, airlines, traffic management, and airports to be part of the solution.” In addition to quieter aircraft, targets will be met by means of optimised operational techniques and preferential routings. Modern aircraft design already takes engine noise reduction into account. Quieter flights have an obviously beneficial effect on the customer’s experience. Other developments in aviation technology will enhance the general safety of what is already the safest means of transport by any statistical measure. Meeting emissions targets will benefit the global community by helping to put the brakes on climate change. But is change happening quickly enough? “Airbus’s aim is to continuously make flying better for airlines and passengers and the industry has demonstrated amazing progress over the last decades,” says Llewellyn. “We are now looking at technology that could provide a step change in reducing carbon dioxide emissions.” 

Suntola palkittiinkin saavutuksistaan Millennium-teknologiapalkinnolla vuonna 2018. ALD-menetelmän yleistymisen imussa Suomeen on kehittynyt aiheeseen liittyvää yritystoimintaa, muun muassa ALD-pinnoituskoneiden valmistusta. Hyvä esimerkki tästä on Kirkkonummen Masalassa toimiva Picosun Oy, jonka hallituksessa ALD-menetelmän keksinyt tohtori Tuomo Suntola on mukana.

Laboratoriosta tuotannolliseksi toiminnaksi Aluksi ALD tunnettiin nimenomaan tutkijapiireissä, joissa arvostettiin suomalaisten innovaattoreiden keksintöä, jonka avulla pystyttiin valmistamaan jopa miljoonasosamillimetrin paksuisia puolijohdekalvoja. Kun puolijohdeteollisuus sitten heräsi älylaitteiden valmistuksessa ilmenneeseen, entistä pienempien komponenttien tarpeeseen, suomalaiskeksinnöstä alkoi jalostua liiketoimintaa. Picosun on matkalla alansa johtavaksi toimijaksi.

Suomalainen atomikerroskasvatus valloittaa maailmaa Atomikerroskasvatus eli ALD (Atomic Layer Deposition) on yksi merkittävimmistä suomalaisista teknologiakeksinnöistä. Älykellot, tietokoneet ja matkapuhelimet tarvitsevat entistä pienempiä puolijohteita. Niiden valmistuksessa Suomessa jo 1970-luvulla kehitetty ALD-pinnoitusteknologia on vertaansa vailla.

– Olemme siirtyneet automaatioarkkitehtuurin osalta toiminnallisesti hajautet-

3X TIPS FOR CABIN COMFORT

STAY HYDRATED

It is recommended to drink 1–2 decilitres of water every hour. If possible, minimise the amount of tea, coffee, and alcohol you drink.

HEALTHIER AIRCRAFT

The Finnair A350 combines the latest technology with advanced passenger comfort features to help you rediscover the thrill of flying. An advanced HEPA filtering system changes the cabin air every two to three minutes ensuring comfort and health for all passengers. Large windows let natural light flow into the cabin and LED technology emits lighting and colours that are customised to fit the time of day, destination, or season. The noise level is 16 decibels below the standard requirement, so resting and relaxing while onboard is easy.

GET SOME SLEEP

The best way to tune out is to wear an eye mask and ear plugs. Keep warm, too – have a jacket or blanket handy in case you need it.

2X COMFORTABLE UPGRADES NORDIC BUSINESS CLASS Finnair’s Business Class seats let you fully recline on your intercontinental flight. The seats transform into a 200 cm (6’6”) horizontal bed, so you can enjoy a good night’s sleep.

88 BLUE WINGS NOVEMBER 2019

ECONOMY COMFORT Finnair’s Economy Comfort seating in the front of the Economy Class cabin makes intercontinental travel even more pleasurable with 8–13 cm (3–5 inches) more legroom.

GENERAL WELLBEING

Try to bring something to snack on. Fruit and veggies are always a great healthy option. And remember to wear comfortable clothing.
