We now have a mass of data available, whereby bulls are ranked on various traits. The most widely accepted fertility index, DPR (Daughter Pregnancy Rate) gives a true indication by equating it to the number of days pregnant than compared to herd mates. The danger we face is that whilst there is high DPR sires on the market, a lot of them have significant minus ratings for production. However, it is possible ‘to get the best of both worlds’. By using industry savvy apps, speaking with your breeding consultant or through research, there are many profitable production sires that have outstanding health traits.

In the April proof run ABS has added several elite genomic sires to the BPI$ list. This 2019 April BPI proof release saw some significant re-calculations occur. Residual survival has been removed from the three indices: BPI, HWI and TWI. Residual Survival measures the elements of survival that we currently can not estimate genetically (such as lameness and metabolic disorders). It was challenging to implement and the Genetic Evaluation Standing Committee recommended it’s removal to improve stability. In the spring 2017 LEG newsletter we mentioned that Mogul is destined to be a significant impact sire of the Holstein breed. In recent Australian proof summaries this has become evident in spades. There is no less than 13 Mogul sons in the top 50. This list does feature some sires who marginally missed out on getting publishable proofs. Interestingly, it also features 9 sires that are previous members of LEG genomic packs. These sires were selected by LEG based on traits we felt suited Australian conditions. The #1 sire in Mookie (WWS) is 394 BPI nearly 60 points above #2 sire in Maebull from GAC. A number of other Mogul sons like AltaRoble (354) and Gambler (333) feature highly, but miss out on the official list due to being below publishable on reliability for certain traits.

Canadian Proof Results The talk had been strong in Northern America for sometime that S-S-I Montross Duke (WWS) was something special. Debuting at #1 this massive production sire at 2655 Kg Milk coupled with a +17 Dairy Strength makes him a unique sire. Leading Edge Genetics team inspected some Duke daughters recently. They are mid-sized cows with plenty of strength, maintain body condition, have tremendous udders and most importantly, are big production cows. The one area of concern with Duke is his calving ease. However there are promising Duke sons, that are more desirable in this area. LEG have sourced a number for this season ahead. Debuting at #2 on the LPI list is an early Flame son in Benner Bardo from Semex. Sampled in Australia as a genomic sire, this great health trait sire with outstanding udders is one to consider for those wanting high quality milk.

April 2019 Highlights from Agri Gene Highlights from the Australian April 2019 ABV have included the performance of new release sire French sire NACASH. He is not only prominent in Australia for BPI but also the highest European bull on the USA list for TPI at +2855 and also No.1 in Italy. With his global appeal he will be a much sought after sire that will be in high demand worldwide as an elite flush sire. Another high TPI bull who has been performing incredibly well on the Australian BPI system is CHAIRMAN. CHAIRMAN himself sits high amongst the top BPI sires at +346, however it is the performance of his Australian born daughters that is creating all the excitement. Currently from all the Australian heifers born in 2018 and 2019, CHAIRMAN daughters make up 7 of the top 15 heifers for high BPIg. A couple of polled German bulls round out Agri-Gene’s top 5 BPI sires. They are new release sire ADLON-P who is the leading polled sire in Germany and No.2 for ISU in France and POINT-P who would rank amongst the highest polled and BPI sires in the breed at +323 BPI. From the USA, Agri-Gene’s highest new release TPI sire is St Gen R –Haze RAPID at +2850 TPI with over +3 for type and excellent health traits. Other new released high TPI sires include TJR Dynamo PANTHER and Mr Rubicon NICHE who are both over +2 for type with moderate stature, ample strength and good fertility and health traits. Looking for data-loving dairy farmers! DataGene is on the look out for dairy farmers who keep meticulous records to join Ginfo, the industry’s national reference group for genetic information.Participating herds will have their 2-year-old heifers DNA tested (genotyped) and classified for free and have the option to test young female calves at a discount. They also receive a year’s free subscription to the HerdData app and early access to DataGene’ s reports and tools under development. To be eligible, herds need to be regularly herd-testing and recording information such as calvings, joinings, sires and dams, pregnancy test results and health events such as mastitis. DataGene CEO, Dr Matt Shaffer, said Ginfo had enabled Australia to lead the world in genomic breeding values for traits that are difficult to measure such as feed saved and heat tolerance. “Ginfo is a critical data set in the genetic evaluation system for the Australian dairy industry. It’s enabled us to develop new breeding values and to improve the reliability of existing breeding values, especially fertility,” Dr Shaffer said. Over the next couple of years, DataGene plans to double the number of herds in Ginfo to about 200. Ginfo herds are located across Australia’s eight dairying regions. “Ginfo is a great tool for the entire dairy industry by providing the latest genetic information and adding to genetic reliability. At an individual farm level, Ginfo means you have genetic accuracy because of genomic testing, and the ability to make informed selection decisions because of the access to early genomics on young heifers. There are a lot of really good farmers are involved in the Ginfo project so it also gives participants access a great network of progressive famers.” Sam McCluggage Allansford, Victoria, milking 700 Holsteins.
