Since the inception of artificial breeding only a small number of sires have gained the title of icon or once in a generation sire. These are bulls that have been able dramatically improve a generation, whether it be from a production, type aspect or maybe as a sire of sons. In the 1970’s the Holstein sire that had a massive impact on the breed was Linmack Kriss King. Born in Canada and owned by Milk Marketing Board in England, Linmack was an importance nce iconic per sire. His ability to improve confirmation dramatically and increase components quickly made his impact massive.

Who will be this year’s winning entry?
The dates have been set for this years on farm challenge. Judging will take place on November 8th to 11th by this years judge Matt Templeton. Matt, along with his parents Bruce and Jan operate View Fort Holsteins in Tarwin, Victoria. There they milk 250 cows and farm 350 acres. Matt has previously worked at Coomboona Holsteins as their Elite & Show Herd Manager and Herd Manager for Leslie Farms, home of Pooley Bridge Holsteins. Matt has judged at shows in all states of Australia and New Zealand including numerous judging roles at International Dairy Week . It was here in 2015 that Matt judged the National All Breeds Youth Show. In 2016 Matt was the Associate Judge for the Red and White Holstein Show at the World Dairy Expo. Matt is on the Holstein USA judges panel and has also judged the Jerseys at the 2016 Brisbane Royal and the Holsteins at the 2016 Adelaide Royal. Over the years Matt has also judged the numerous On Farm Challenges, including the overall final of the Semex Challenge. Matt regularly assists with promoting dairy youth activities throughout Australia. Entry forms will be sent out in October and the presentation luncheon will be held at Warragul Country Club on Friday 1st December.

In what was a great result for Agri-Gene bulls in the recent August Dairy proofs the 2 obvious standouts were the performances of proven bulls DELTA and new Genomic sire CHAIRMAN. DELTA debuted in the official proven TPI sire list at Number 1. He is a former number 1 Genomic sire and continues to improve as more milking daughters are added to his proof. USA Proof Highlights... It had been predicted by many, but the Mogul sons came with a bang! The August proofs saw a large number of new bulls graduate. The new # 1 sire is Mr Mogul Delta who graduated with a TPI of 2849, he is 75 points ahead of the former #1 sire in Bacon-Hill Montross. Mogul sons fill 7 of the top 10 positions in the TPI list. Other bulls worth mentioning on debut (all Mogul sons) include #4 EDG Rubicon, #8 Seagull-Bay Silver and #9 Westenrade AltaSpring. A noteworthy debut was that of the #20 bull in Lone-Oak-Acres AltaRoble (Mogul/Observer). At 2.77 for type and 3.13 for UDC he ranks as the #1 udder composite sire in the top 50 TPI sires. Slight adjustments to the TPI formula has favoured those bulls leaving animals of more moderate stature. This change certainly has favoured the Mogul bloodlines.

A bull that has graduated now at #7 in Canada, #13 in America and #1 in Australia is De-Su 11228 Topsy from ABS. MAEBULL increases ABV ranking following August Release April ABV graduate MAEBULL (Palermo x Shottle) further increased his BPI ranking following the August ABV release to move past the magical 300 BPI barrier. MAEBULL was the result of an embryo imported by Calister Holsteins of Calivil, Victoria. He added more milking daughters and the ideal Australian proven bull and the highest Australian standing BPI daughter proven Holstein. MAEBULL has been in extremely high demand since he received his first ABV earlier in the year and it is easy to see why. His blend of production and management traits is ideal for our farming systems with daughters that are medium for stature, highly fertile and extremely resistant to mastitis. He’s just about the perfect bull. He offers a lift to milk volume at +296 and with a +.21% Protein and +0.14% fat, is 90% black and A22. At 111 for udders, 106 or greater for all Workability traits and A22 he will remain in high demand for the balance of 2017. Valentino, a bull available through our relationship with WWS edged past TAHBILK to be the Number 1 BPI daughter proven bull at 286. This bull has had a huge impact around the world and his influence will be felt for generations with a number of high rated genomic sons now available.
