In February LEG took a large group of farmers and industry associates to the Western Districts, to visit a number of progressive farming operations. The tour also took in visits to Genetics Australia and Total Livestock Genetics.

March saw a quality offering of Holstein, Jerseys and Ayrshires put under the hammer at the 4th Leading Edge Genetics Elite Sale. A large crowd of over 250 people saw an extremely pleasing sale average of $4499. The top priced lot was Lot 4 Jarramah Jedi Renea (GTPI +2706) a/c Rowen and Sally Foote sell to Brian Slavin of Tyers for $9500. Jerseys lots were of the highest quality with Lot 15 Philmar FC Griffens Gotya a/c Flemming/B Kuhne sell to Lindsay Heath, Maffra for $7000 as the top priced Jersey. The 2 Ayrshire lots from Munden Farms were of breed leading quality with Lot 21 Avant-Guard Hansoms Locket selling for $3000 to Jake Matthews, Yarragon.

High ranking sires from AGRI GENE The release of the April 2018 USA Holstein proofs saw some expected changes to Productive Life figures along with some unexpected and unexplained changes to Daughter Pregnancy Rates that also had an effect on overall TPI evaluations. While this represented a downward trend in numbers for these traits, it did not result in much of a re-ranking. Bulls that were ranked high before the April release have remained high. There is no better example of this than proven sires DELTA and RUBICON who now both have over 2000 milking daughters in the USA and remain the No.2 and No.3 proven TPI ranked sires in the breed. Some other USA highlights from our 2018 new release sires include: SEAGLASS; remains one the highest TPI sires with conventional semen available at +2762 TPI, he has superb type with a near faultless linear. He is also a great production sire with over 1900 Ibs of milk and is our No.1 Protein Ibs sire. HUNK; is a new Modesty son with a great all-round proof with over 2000 Ibs of milk and combined Fat and Protein of 153 Ibs. He combines this with excellent health and fertility traits and we saw his SCR figure move from +0.4 to +1.4 as more data is received on his semen fertility. The release of Australian April ABV’s saw the release of BONTINO’s first son into AI who debuted at Number 1 on the Australian Genomic BPI rankings. PUBLICAN sits at the top of the genomic BPI rankings at +330. He is an A2/A2 sire with good daughter fertility and will improve udders and increase strength – everything we are looking for in a modern Australian Jersey sire. PUBLICAN’s sire BONTINO continues to hold up well on the Australian ranking with is stablemate at Cairnbrae Jerseys, JETFIGHTER will be one of our most popular bulls for 2018. He comes from the famous Daisy cow family at Cairnbrae and combines high BPI with type, production and is one of the best in the breed for daughter fertility.

USA Proof Highlights... The riches were spread around the recent April 2018 TPI proof release. No fewer than 6 companies had bulls feature in the top 10 listing. Debuting at #1 is the Supersire son from ABS in JoSuper who lifted 49 TPI points. This lift saw him supersede the former #1 in Mogul Delta from the ST stable. Another noteworthy point is Mogul siring 6 of the top 10 include four originating from Robust dams. The Peak program featured strongly in the April proof release. In particular the AltaRobson sons performed well with 3 sons in the Top 10.

Systems Updates from April proofs at CDCB
• CDCB updated the way they calculate Productive Life, which impacted industry bulls more than expected – and for more than just PL. The multiple-trait Productive Life (PL) processing for incoming Interbull data has been completely revised to prevent the emergency actions taken in April and August 2017. The new system no longer tries to forward the differences between single and multiple-trait PL from one generation to the next. This logic tended to inflate the resulting evaluation, affecting primarily foreign bulls. Since foreign bull evaluations were inflated, SNP effects used to estimate genomic evaluations were affected, extending the inflation to the general population (e.g., including domestic animals). • This is not a base change. The variable rollback adjusts for previous inflations, and that means an average TPI and NM$ drop for most bulls this proof round. Top-ranking bulls saw more extreme drops, but on average, according to CDCB, this calculation adjustment equated to the following: o Currently marketed industry HO genomic bulls lowered 1.5 PL, 1.4 DPR and 37 $NM o Currently marketed industry HO daughter-proven sires: 0.8 PL , 1.0 DPR and 18 $NM • To account for previous inflation, be prepared to see lower PL, DPR, TPI, NM$ and customized index values for most bulls. The industry-wide decrease means you’ll want to readjust your mindset on the acceptable values for these indexes and traits. • CDCB RELEASED SIX NEW HEALTH TRAITS – These traits, shown as resistance to each disease, are: Milk Fever, Displaced Abomasum, Ketosis, Mastitis, Metritis, and Retained Placenta. These traits are six of the most common and costly health events impacting dairy herds. Preliminary results and test files were shared to the industry in December 2017. Positive predicted transmitting abilities (PTAs) measure resistance to these health disorders. For example, a mastitis PTA of +3 indicates that 3% fewer daughters will get mastitis during each lactation. Further research is ongoing to: i) extend health evaluations to other breeds; ii) further improve the evaluation model; iii) include these results in the international exchange of evaluations; iv) increase data consistency and sources. Please note that since this is the very first release of this new evaluation, reliabilities are expected to be lower than in the future, when more and more records will be included in the database. A new release sire from the Canadian bull barn is Glenhaven Super CECIL. CECIL is bred from the Larcrest C family, sired by Superhero and his dam is VG 2yr old Main Event who produced just under 10,000kgs of milk in her first lactation at 4.7% fat and 3.3% protein. CECIL will initially be available conventionally but we expect to have Ultra 4M sexed semen available mid-year.
