‘On-Farm Competition 2018’
The winners of the Leading Edge Genetics On-Farm competition for 2018 were announced in December where a tremendous crowd of over 130 people were in attendance at the Warragul Golf Club. Under our judge from the UK, Mr.Mike Halliwell, the winners were spread across four different breeders. First time class winners and winning the Overall Champion was Colin and Dale Armstrong with their entry 3565, sired by Jeeves (more later in the newsletter).

There was considerable depth in this phenomenal 2 year old class in the Leading Edge Genetics On-Farm Competition for 2018. Leading the way was the great framed Holstein heifer owned by Lancey Farms. Sired by Fever, she placed over the outstanding Jedi daughter 33 of the White Family at Leongatha South. Placing 3rd was 2684, sired by Meridian and owned by first time exhibitors Mark and Trish Hammond from Labertouche.

The 4 year old and over class featured some of the best mature cows from across Gippsland. Taking out 1st place was the entry of 3565 sired by Jeeves and owned by Colin and Dale Armstrong from Darnum. This extremely well balanced and correct animal placed over the outstandingly uddered Valentino daughter 2797, owned by Simon Reid and Belinda Egan of Longwarry North. In 3rd place was the impressive Final Cut daughter of the Templeton family at Meeniyan.

The Group Class is always one of the more interesting classes of the competition. In 1st placed was the Epic daughter group owned by Bill, Faye Brett and Jodi Loughridge of Poowong North. Australian Proof Results Jersey Proofs from Australia - Highlights
Domestically there was little change in the top proven listing. However one bull likely to graduate in April 2019 is the Valentino son, Bontino from Agri-Gene. Whilst only early, his numbers do look promising. He is 243 BPI with 50 milking daughters and 113 for overall type with a 117 on mammary. It is perhaps his linear where the most interest will be. He is strong positives for chest width and body depth, something the Jersey breed has probably missed since the impact of Van Ahlem. There is a number of other promising Jersey bulls to follow over the next 6 months. They include Askn (GAC), Oliver P (GAC/WWS), Viper (ABS) and Megapower (WWS). All of these bulls should get publishable proofs in the near future.

Summer is heating up and so is the Genetics Australia December catalogue with several new release sires hitting the market. Siemers Hotspot is a type superstar at 3.99 for Overall type and 3.32 Udder Composite. This A22 Peak Hotline son is backed by the renowned Cookiecutter “H” family. December 2018 Proof Highlights from Agri Gene The release of the December 2018 dairy proofs once again saw the continued dominance of perennial breed leaders RUBICON & DELTA. Both bulls are former No.1 Genomic sires and they now occupy the No.1 Proven USA TPI position (Rubicon) and the No.1 Proven Canadian LPI sire (Delta) both with many thousands of daughters. RUBICON is also the No.1 Fat sire and No.2 for Net Merit. When you look through the pedigrees of the majority of the up and coming new genomic sires, he is fast becoming one of the most influential sires of his generation. If this is true of the Rubicon sire line then surely one of the most influential maternal lines is from Delta’s DELICIOUS cow family. Leading genomic sires currently from the Delicious cow family in Agri-Gene’s sire line-up include; NOBLE (+2850 TPIg), NEXUS (+2799 TPIg) and NOLAN (+2791 TPIg). NOLAN is also one of our highest BPI sires at +355 who is bettered only by CHAIRMAN at +359. Chairman is also another Delicious influenced pedigree. From our Jersey line-up the highlight is the performance of farmer favourite BONTINO who is the sire of the No.1 Genomic BPI sire PUBLICAN. USA Proof Highlights... His proof continues to strengthen and we speak of course about EDG Rubicon from the ST stable. This Mogul son from the Ex Robust dam is the complete package. He ranks #1 Fat, #2 Net Merit and this together with a strong 2.13 on overall linear make him highly profitable. Other Mogul sons that feature in the Top 10 TPI listing are #4 Delta, #6 Yoder, #10 Platinum. An interesting fact is the highest type sire in the Top 100 listing is another Mogul sire Larcrest Commander from ABS at 2.84. A Mogul son, AltaSpring is the #1 UDC sire in the listing at 3.18. A couple of interesting graduates were the two Montross sons from WWS. At #5 is Duke with plenty of power and frame together with tremendous production.
