Here’s an example… Steinbeck presents Curley’s Wife as a dangerous temptress. The author’s choice of adjectives presents her as seductive, describing her ‘red’ shoes and ‘red’ lips. This means that Curley’s wife is very glamorously dressed, which is unusual for the wife of a ranch owner. The colour red makes us think of passion and love, but also of danger and hazards. Signs alerting us to dangerous situations are often red. Red is the colour of many things associated with love affairs, like hearts, and roses. It is also a striking colour which stands out and draws attention. It can also be seen as quite an aggressive colour. Therefore we understand that Curley’s wife represents passion, but also danger. She is a hazard to the jobs and the freedom of the ranch workers as if they get involved with her, they could be sacked by Curley. She is aggressive in fulfilling her own desires, and does not belong on a ranch, therefore she ‘stands out’, much like the colour red. This links to the author’s message that life is full of hazards for workers like George and Lennie, and that loneliness and unfulfilled dreams can make people bitter and dangerous, just like Curley’s wife.
