FIONA LU Collected Works Spring 2015
Hello, my name is Fiona and I am currently a third year student studying architecture at the University of Waterloo. In the first two year of my architectural studies, I have developed the skills in innovative designs that combine form and function in a creative and rational way. My childhood in China has given me a first hand experience of the effects of poor urban planning and architecture in high density areas. As a result, I am inspired to explore innovative designs that provide a better living space for its residents. Enjoy, Fiona

Jan - April 2014
To Whom It May Concern, Fiona Lu interned at Studio V from September 2nd, 2014 through December 19th, 2014. In that time, Fiona became an invaluable member of several project teams within our firm. I worked most directly with her on our projects at West 58th Street and Morimoto Asia. Fiona drafted interior elevations, detail drawings, and enlarged plans as part of an 11-story, 120,000ft2 ground-up, mixed use development on West 58th Street in Manhattan. For this project in particular, Fiona’s work had to meet extraordinarily high standards of rigor and detail, as the project was subject to a great deal of scrutiny by the client’s internal review team as well as the plan examiner. The very detailed and careful approach that Fiona takes to drafting made her extremely valuable to this effort. She was able to complete complicated drawings and cross-reference several other drawings and sources of information almost without oversight. While this work was completed primarily in AutoCAD, she also contributed to concept renderings using Photoshop and her modeling skills in Rhino. It is Fiona’s contribution on the Morimoto Asia restaurant, however, that constituted the bulk of her work during her time here. Fiona worked directly with myself, project manager Sohee Moon, and firm principal Jay Valgora on a daily basis, and contributed to nearly every aspect of the project. Morimoto Asia is a 23,000ft2 , 550-seat restaurant currently under construction in Downtown Disney, Orlando, Florida. As part of Disney’s property, the project has increased requirements for accessibility, energy performance, and life safety. Fiona familiarized herself with all of these criteria, and used that knowledge to assist the design team in everything from space planning to furniture design. Fiona contributed to the production of floor plans, building sections, wall sections, exterior and interior details, life safety plans, and detail drawings of specialty items. She also created a detailed Rhino model and generated interior and exterior renderings for presentation to the client. Fiona participated in internal design reviews, where she influenced decisions on several aspects of the final design, and was an active participant in presentations to the client. In all her work, Fiona exhibits a cheerful attitude, careful attention to detail, eagerness to learn, and diligent work ethic. She is extremely capable in AutoCAD, Rhino, and the various Adobe applications, but also possesses an ability to learn new techniques, solve difficult design problems, and conceptualize very complex systems. She is a good communicator, never afraid to ask a question, but does not require much oversight in her work. Fiona would make an extremely valuable addition to any architecture firm. Feel free to contact me with any questions you may have.
Sincerely, erely,
Gordon Wilhelm, AIA don Wilhelm

Morimoto Asia is a Asian fusion restaurant located in Orlando Florida. The Patina Group, based in New York, hired Studio V to design their new restaurant in collaboration with Japanese iron chef Masaharu Morimoto. The restaurant is to be located in a decommissioned bottling plant, and client wished to maintain the industrial appearance. Due to the poor condition of the existing building, everything had to be demolished save for the structure. The new design gave the building a new façade and interior, but to maintain the bottle conveyor belt which is to be converted into a light fixture. One key component of the design is the “ribbon barâ€?, a ribbon like component that weaves from the ground floor to form the ground floor bar, around and up the stairs and onto the second floor to form the second floor bar.

My contribution to the project included preparing design drawings, and interior elevation package based on completed plans and sections. I also attended bi-weekly meetings with the client to consolidate and review the design. I worked with the team to finish the design process, or to change the design as per the client’s request.

2B STUDIO FINAL PROJECT COMPLETED: August 2014 LOCATED: Milton Dufferin Quarry, Milton, ON Located in the Milton quarry, the spice garden is an indoor greenhouse that grows exotic spices year round in the temperate climate of southern Canada. The facility is built against the rock face of the old quarry, and the wall is softened by berming it with soil. The plants are grown on the sloped berm, and the steepness of the slope determines what kind of plant is to be grown there, as it dictates drainage and sunlight exposure.

The visitor and learning centres flank each side of one of the greenhouse. The buildings act as a transition between the humid greenhouse interior and the exterior. In addition, the building carries the visitor from the ground floor entrance into the upper levels of the greenhouse, or to the top of the quarry wall which overlooks the escarpment.

The decked areas are used as a gathering space for special events, or a lounge.

2A STUDIO PROJECT COMPLETED: Dec 2013 LOCATED: Hood Street, Cambridge, ON This is the design of a community centre located in downtown Cambridge, Ontario. The glass facade plays with the temporal aspect of the building; during the day, the glass is reflective, thus creating an opaque surface when viewed from the exterior. At night, the effect is reversed, such that one can only see reflects of the interior when looking out from the building, but the building becomes transparent for the exterior.

Courtyards and skatepark were raised and depressed
