F IO N A LU Collected Works Fall 2015

Hello, my name is Fiona and I am currently a third year student studying architecture at the University of Waterloo. In the three year of my architectural studies, I have developed the skills in innovative designs that combine form and function in a creative and rational way. These skills which I have picked up in school have been applied to my various co-op experiences. The following is a collection highlighting some of the projects I have worked on and participated in over the year. Enjoy! Fiona

To Whom It May Concern, Fiona Lu interned at Studio V from September 2nd, 2014 through December 19th, 2014. In that time, Fiona became an invaluable member of several project teams within our firm. I worked most directly with her on our projects at West 58th Street and Morimoto Asia. Fiona drafted interior elevations, detail drawings, and enlarged plans as part of an 11-story, 120,000ft2 ground-up, mixed use development on West 58th Street in Manhattan. For this project in particular, Fiona’s work had to meet extraordinarily high standards of rigor and detail, as the project was subject to a great deal of scrutiny by the client’s internal review team as well as the plan examiner. The very detailed and careful approach that Fiona takes to drafting made her extremely valuable to this effort. She was able to complete complicated drawings and cross-reference several other drawings and sources of information almost without oversight. While this work was completed primarily in AutoCAD, she also contributed to concept renderings using Photoshop and her modeling skills in Rhino. It is Fiona’s contribution on the Morimoto Asia restaurant, however, that constituted the bulk of her work during her time here. Fiona worked directly with myself, project manager Sohee Moon, and firm principal Jay Valgora on a daily basis, and contributed to nearly every aspect of the project. Morimoto Asia is a 23,000ft2 , 550-seat restaurant currently under construction in Downtown Disney, Orlando, Florida. As part of Disney’s property, the project has increased requirements for accessibility, energy performance, and life safety. Fiona familiarized herself with all of these criteria, and used that knowledge to assist the design team in everything from space planning to furniture design. Fiona contributed to the production of floor plans, building sections, wall sections, exterior and interior details, life safety plans, and detail drawings of specialty items. She also created a detailed Rhino model and generated interior and exterior renderings for presentation to the client. Fiona participated in internal design reviews, where she influenced decisions on several aspects of the final design, and was an active participant in presentations to the client. In all her work, Fiona exhibits a cheerful attitude, careful attention to detail, eagerness to learn, and diligent work ethic. She is extremely capable in AutoCAD, Rhino, and the various Adobe applications, but also possesses an ability to learn new techniques, solve difficult design problems, and conceptualize very complex systems. She is a good communicator, never afraid to ask a question, but does not require much oversight in her work. Fiona would make an extremely valuable addition to any architecture firm. Feel free to contact me with any questions you may have.

Sincerely, erely,

Gordon don Wilhelm, Wilhelm AIA

3A STUDIO FINAL PROJECT COMPLETED: April 2015 LOCATED: Liberty Village, Toronto Located in the developing Liberty Village in Toronto, beside a newly built commuter train line serving the Downtown, Crossroads is a project which serves as an extension of the train connecting the suburbs, the Village and the Downtown. In addition, Crossroads is a commercial building to serve the growing, youngworking population in the area. On the ground floor are public gathering spaces such as a market, plaza, and waterworks. The public space is extended to the higher floors through a series of large ramps that is also intersecting the building at points to connect the exterior of the interior. Within spaces for small business start-ups are provided with the addition of traditional office spaces.

Within the building, there are two large “caves” excavated from the massing to create a gathering space for the workers in the buildings. The “cave” spans 5 floors, from which there is a direct visual connection, in addition to a series of stairs physically connecting the people on these floors. This vertical connection encourages collaborating and the exchange of ideas.

In addition to the “caves a series of staircases directly running between floors further encourage vertical communication, and collaboration. There stairs face towards the series of ramps, and the garden on the platform, thus providing a view and connection to the exterior.

SUMMER 2015 CO-OP: davidclovers COMPLETED: July 2015 LOCATED: Causeway Bay, Hong Kong While working as an intern at Davidclovers in Hong Kong, I assisted in the design process of a retail store located in the highly commercialized area of Causeway Bay, Fashion Walk in Hong Kong. Liger Paterson is one of the many fashion boutiques in the district and the client has asked the firm to redesign the interior and facade as part of the shop’s re-branding. Materiality and geometry created movement in the exterior and interior. A simple palette of wood, and white paint clads the interior and exterior. A wooden island when small merchandise such as accessories was designed as the centerpiece of the project. It’s elongated diamond shape with fillet-ed corners is reflected in the wooden facade.

SUMMER 2015 CO-OP: davidclovers COMPLETED: June 2015 LOCATED: Kwun Tong, Hong Kong Kwun Tong was once an industrial area of Hong Kong, and its past has been carried to the present as old factory buildings, and housing still exist despite the changing culture. Davidclovers was invited to participate in a redevelopment competition with the aim of urban renewal to create a better living environment. The requirement was to develop public spaces, retail space, and residential towers for the existing, and incoming residents. The design intent was to create a lively public space for the community to gather, and an extension of the green space into the interior. The extensive public space includes a square, and garden with plenty of shading provided by the existing Banyan trees to shelter the public from the blazing summer sun.

The garden would extend from the public square into the retail complex. The pockets of green space not only provide a intimate gathering space, but also creates faceted storefronts for additional storefront display, as well.

Morimoto Asia is a Asian fusion restaurant located in Orlando Florida. The Patina Group, based in New York, hired Studio V to design their new restaurant in collaboration with Japanese iron chef Masaharu Morimoto.

Interior rendering

The restaurant is to be located in a decommissioned bottling plant, and client wished to maintain the industrial appearance. The new design gave the building a new façade and interior, but to maintain the bottle conveyor belt which is to be converted into a light fixture. One key component of the design is the “ribbon barâ€?, a ribbon like component that weaves from the ground floor to form the ground floor bar, around and up the stairs and onto the second floor to form the second floor bar.

My contribution to the project included preparing design drawings, and interior elevation package based on completed plans and sections. I also attended bi-weekly meetings with the client to consolidate and review the design. I worked with the team to finish the design process, or to change the design as per the client’s request.

2A STUDIO PROJECT COMPLETED: Dec 2013 LOCATED: Hood Street, Cambridge, ON This is the design of a community centre located in downtown Cambridge, Ontario. The glass facade plays with the temporal aspect of the building; during the day, the glass is reflective, thus creating an opaque surface when viewed from the exterior. At night, the effect is reversed, such that one can only see reflects of the interior when looking out from the building, but the building becomes transparent for the exterior.
