Styling for an Editorial Photoshoot

For this assignment, I was asked to style a photo shoot for a magazine of my choice. I chose to do a photo shoot for Harper’s Bazaar because I feel like my style and taste is similar to their style aesthetic. Another reason I chose this magazine was because I loved the way the editorial shots looked. The colors are so vibrant, the locations of the shots are beautiful, and the quality of the images is spectacular. I looked on their editorial calendar and they have all kinds of different themes for each month. I chose to do March of 2014 which is the “Spring Fashion Issue” because I knew of a few interesting trends that are emerging for Spring 2014.

Theme & Inspiration I wanted to base my photo shoot off the ‘wearing metallic during the day’ trend that will be in style for Spring 2014, according to WGSN and Style.com. For my photo shoot though, I wanted to be a little more specific and have just gold metallics because I thought it would be more vibrant. Based off that, came up with the idea to incorporate Byzantine jewelry into my photo shoot because it is mainly gold and consists of colored jewels that I consider spring-like colors. Byzantine history, the color gold, the jewels on Byzantine jewelry, and Katy Perry’s new album Prism are just a few things that inspired me when picking a location, hair, make-up, and outfits.

Hair & Makeup I want the model’s hair to be windswept/textured and put up in either a messy ponytail or undo. I want the makeup to look fresh but with bold brows and a significant amount of blush. I also want the eyes to have light, pastel colored shadow with gold eyeliner on the top eyelid. I wanted hair and makeup to be more simple because the clothing and accessories the model will be wearing are pretty flashy.

Reference This project reflects my ability to work with people in a group setting and the ability to use innovation skills. This can be used as reference in the future when I would like to develop my own store concept. This also reflects how my merchandising skills are being put to use.

Objective Our team of three had to think of an innovative retail store concept and create a design layout for that store. We also had to incorporate how our store is going to be socially responsible, environmentally responsible, and ethically responsible. These little steps eventually became one big picture at the end. We invented ProTech Fitness, which is an active ready-to-wear shop that is targeted towards athletic individuals early 20’s to late 30’s.

Creating with Computer Aided Design Tools Reference This project reflects my ability to use CAD tools like PAD, Adobe Illustrator, and Photoshop. It also shows how these tools can enhance my designs. Knowing how to work with technology will be beneficial for me and whomever I work with in the future.

!

Objective We flat patterned, graded, and marked using PAD system. The textile designs were created using Adobe Illustrator. Our class was assigned a project that required us to design three different correlating textiles using the Flux Pantone color palette. The other part of the project was to design and make flat patterns on PAD so we could construct a garment using the textiles we created. Everyone had to go by the same theme, which was Summer 2014, so most of our garments were summer dresses that were either made out of silk or cotton. I decided to design and construct a coverup to wear to the beach on a hot summer day. I also created a bandeau to look like a bathing suit top so it could be worn underneath the cover-up.

Inspiration For this particular project, the ocean and its surroundings inspired me. The color palette worked very well with the textile designs I wanted to create and it went along with the Summer 2014 theme perfectly. I want these textiles to motivate people to make a connection with their surroundings and explore new places.

Final Garment ! !I designed three different textiles but only chose two to use to construct the garments. My textiles are very playful, young, bright and fun; which sets a great mood for a day at the beach. Any girl that wants to show off their cute, quirky side would adore these garments. Cotton was used to make my garments because it is lightweight and breathable, considering the fact that these garments are going to be worn in hot weather. The cover up has two long straps that cover the bust area and ties around the neck, so the back is completely bare. There is elastic sewn in around the waist so the wearer can get in and out of the dress comfortably. This dress would allow someone to look pulled together in an effortless way. I also designed a bandeau, which was a fun add-on to this project. It is suppose to be worn underneath the dress but was pictured separately because I wanted to show as much as possible. The bandeau goes around the bust and ties in the back, acting as a strapless bathing suit top. The textile designs are different on both garments because I wanted there to be a clear distinction between the two instead of them blending together. !

.! !Overall, this project was a lot of fun to do because it was really different from what I have ever done before. It allowed me to learn all kinds of new tools on the computer and create patterns digitally instead of by hand. I will definitely be able to apply the skills that I have learned in the future because soon enough, everything will be accomplished digitally.

Specialty Markets: Figure Skating Practice Wear Objective In this particular course, we focused on a niche market of our choice to conduct research on and eventually create samples for. Our research included demographics, psychographics, environmental scanning, competition, and market surveys with a professional in the industry along with potential customers. I chose to focus on figure skating practice wear because I felt there was a need for improvement in this market. As a figure skater growing up, I am already very accustomed to the figure skating lifestyle and also what skaters typically wear. Active-wear in general has become more and more popular these past few years. People are looking for active-wear that is fresh and exciting so they will be more motivated to go exercise. Figure skaters are looking for practice wear that is more modern and fashionable. Based on my experience and research, I feel that there is a need for figure skating practice wear that is fashionable, trendy, comfortable, and also exceptionally affordable. There is definitely room for this niche because since stylish active-wear is in high demand, this definitely could be too. This niche market is very small and that is why I want to take advantage of it and learn more about it. My overall goal is to make the average figure skater feel like an Olympic champion and their desire to get better will increase.

My line, was inspired by the movie Tron Legacy, bright colors, and intricate

lines. I made sure to incorporate into my designs what the customers would want and also my design aesthetic. The clothing in this line are stylish yet comfortable, which is always a plus. This clothing line is different than others because it gives girls an alternative choice that is unique and will make a statement .

Acquiring Couture Techniques in Paris During summer of 2014, I had the great opportunity to do a 4-week program at the Paris American Academy. I learned the techniques of Madame Grès, who was a notable couturier during the 20th century. She is known for her intricate pleating and draping skills. We were taught by instructors Madame Picco, who has previously worked for Madame Gres, and Madame Lenoir. I also learned surface design techniques and millinery. For surface design techniques, we worked with Sharon Kilfoyle, who is a well-known fiber artist from Missouri that specializes in wearable art. For millinery, we worked with Jean Pierre Tritz, whom formerly did millinery work for designer Jean Paul Gautier.

Reference: This study abroad experience shows that I have had exposure to the couture fashion world in Paris. It also expresses how I have further improved my sewing skills from this experience.

The Process Instead of learning the techniques before making the garment, my classmates and I learned the techniques during the process of creating the garment. My classmates and I worked on our garment 7 hours a day, 5 times a week during our time in Paris. Madame Picco and Madame Lenoir took us step by step on how to create this beautiful, timeless garment. It was a slow process because we had to hand-sew most of the garment. First, we had to baste-stitch where the pleats were going to go, then fold and stitch the pleats down. We also had to hand-stitch at the shoulder seams and baste where folds were going to go. In our millinery course, we made a custom top hat with a brim using soap, water, and heat to form it to our head. We also created a turban and decorated it to our liking. In surface design, we dyed scarves using the shibori technique and also made a fascinator using feathers. Once we were shown the proper technique, we were allowed to be creative with our projects.

Acquiring Couture Techniques in Paris Final Products For our garment, we were lucky enough to do a photo-shoot with it. We all went to this building by the school with an elegant, vintage looking interior and a beautiful courtyard in the back. We had the choice to wear the hats that we made as well. I chose now to because I wanted the dress to be the center of attention. ''' ''''' This experience changed my life. Never in a million years would I have thought that I would ever do this. This has given me a chance to study in a different country and gain more knowledge of the fashion world outside of the United States.

Creating Custom Interview Outfits for Grace House Women Reference These pages reflect social responsibility because they are about my involvement in a community based learning project with Grace House. This experience also reflects how I improved my custom tailoring skills and interpersonal skills.

Objective This community- based learning project took place at Grace House, which is a halfway house in Chicago where women get their lives back on track after a difficult time. They relearn skills that they can apply towards finding a job and are also assisted while preparing for job interviews, etc. Our mission was to create a custom, professional outfit for women from Grace House so they could wear it for job interviews. We were assigned to one woman and we created an outfit based on what their style preferences were.

Sketching Shawnea’s look The woman I was assigned to was Shawnea; her goal was to be as comfortable as possible. Her inspiration for her outfit was from a spread in a magazine. The model was wearing a classic two-piece black suit with a feminine silhouette. She liked the fact that the hem of the blazer was longer and pointed in the front and shorter in the back. I translated that into her look and added a white button down blouse for her to wear underneath. I made the pants a basic slack with pockets in front and fake pockets in the back.

"Based on her preferences, I picked out fabric that was crisp but comfortable at the same time. For the blouse, I picked out a stretch polyester blend that I thought Shawnea would feel best in. For the two piece suit, I picked out a lightweight wool blend that can be worn almost anytime of the year. She also wanted to incorporate pink into her outfit so I chose a printed pink lining that would go inside the blazer.

Final Product and Photo Shoot We first created a muslin and had them try it on so we could make adjustments for the actual one. After we made the final adjustments, we completed the outfit with the actual fabric. Once the outfits were finished, we gave them to the women and they wore it for the photo-shoot that took place at Grace House. It was really rewarding to see the women wear our finished garments. I was really honored to be a part of this project because I was able to help someone that was less fortunate than myself. We were able to help a community of people using our sewing skills and design skills that we have attained at Dominican University.

My senior collection, Radiance, is inspired by the idea of the environmental science term “secondary succession”. Secondary succession is the process of regrowth that an ecosystem undergoes after a destructive event. Based off this idea, I thought of supernovas that occur in space and how a star goes through the same process afterwards. I have had an interest in astronomy since I was little so this idea really intrigued me. I also thought that this would be more ideal because of all the amazing, vibrant colors that a supernova creates, which fueled the collection even more. My senior collection depicts the process of a supernova and how a new, regenerated star is born. Based on personal experiences, I also want to show the mentality that even though bad things happen, something good always comes from it. It represents positivity and hope for what’s to come after the destruction. I named my collection Radiance because throughout this process, brilliant light is being spread causing darkness to drift away.

Design Process Once I discovered my inspiration, I decided that I wanted my designs to look more conceptual rather than ready-to-wear. I wanted my garments to be pieces of art that tell a story; each garment is a different stage of the process. Normally, a collection usually consists of the same color scheme but I felt like that was not appropriate for mine. I wanted to start with bright, warm colors and end with cool, soft colors; the shapes and silhouettes I wanted to use tie it all together. I also want to incorporate a cape into all of the pieces to show transition from one to the other. From my designs, I want people to immediately be in awe of the vivid colors and the silhouettes that bring these garments to life.

Rupture The first garment in my collection represents the first stage of the process; the burst of the supernova. I made this garment last because it is the biggest, most complicated piece. I did some beading on the top of the garment that represents the initial burst and also wanted to show that at the bottom of the dress. I used Adobe Illustrator to print an image onto fabric to use for the skirt. After some trial and error, I was finally able to get the size and the colors right. For the cape, I draped organza to create a bubble-like effect. I made several circular spheres out of boning to attach underneath so there was some structure. For all my pieces, I used fabrics that were more stiff but were still able to flow nicely, like organza or siilk taffeta.

Remnants The second garment of my collection represents the second stage of the process; the remains of what was once there. The embellishments at the top represent the gradual spread of the remnants; a mix of spikes and beads were used to make this effect more dramatic. The colors I used for this piece, metallic silver and violet, are still vibrant but they are starting to become cool rather than warm. This one turned out very fierce and edgy, which I think sets the mood perfectly.

Senior Collection “Radiance”

Reborn My third and final garment represents a new beginning; the rebirth. The main color I used for this piece was white because white usually means pure. I added elements of blue to again show the transition. For the embellished cape, I used sapphire spray-dye to create an ombre effect. I also attached some blue crystals onto the shorts so it would match the cape. This piece is my favorite one in this collection because I love how it turned out. It was also one of the main reasons I created this collection.

Best Individual Design Award- Rupture At Dominican University’s annual fashion show, they hand out awards at the the last show. I got awarded the Best Individual Design Award for my garment, Rupture. That was such a proud moment for me; it was a great reward for all of my hard work. It was also a great way to end my senior year of college before moving on to bigger things.
