CHILDHOOD EDUCATION CENTER IN NORTH PHILADELPHIA SITE DESCRIPTION AND PROJECT OBJECTIVE: THE CHILDHOOD EDUCATION CENTER PROJECT PROPOSES A CENTER LOCATED NEXT TO TEMPLE UNIVERSITY TO SERVE AN IMPOVERISHED COMMUNITY AND THE NEEDS OF THE CHILDREN. THE SITE IS RELATIVELY FLAT AND BORDERS A ROAD WITH SIGNIFICANT TRAFFIC. SAFETY AND PLAY: THIS DESIGN HIGHLIGHTS THE IMPORTANCE OF MOVEMENT AND OUTDOOR PLAY FOR CHILDREN WHILE ACKNOWLEDGING THE SAFETY CONCERNS ASSOCIATED WITH THE SITE AND THE YOUNG STUDENTS AT THE SCHOOL. THE BUILDING INCLUDES PROTECTED OUTDOOR PLAY SPACES AS WELL AS A FULL CIRCUIT OF GRASS AREA TO WALK, RUN, AND PLAY. ADDITIONALLY IT HAS AN OPEN PLAY AREA WITH LARGE WINDOWS AND SKYLIGHTS TO ALLOW AN AREA FOR PLAY AND MOVEMENT EVEN IF THE OUTDOOR ELEMENTS DONT ALLOW FOR OUTDOOR PLAY.

PENN STATE NATATORIUM
PLANS: THE MEZZANINE ALLOWS FOR VISITORS AND SPECTATORS TO MOVE ABOUT THE THE THREE PART STRUCTURE AND ALSO INCLUDES THE GARDEN SPA.
SITE DESCRIPTION AND PROJECT OBJECTIVE: THE NATATORIUM PROJECT PROPOSES A REPLACEMENT FOR PENN STATES CURRENT FACILITY. THE SITE HAS A STRONG GRADE AWAY FROM THE ROAD AND SIDEWALKS. THE NATATORIUM WILL SERVICE STUDENT ATHLETES AS WELL AS RECREATIONAL USERS AND SPECTATORS. INTERSTITIAL DIVISIONS: THIS DESIGN USES INTERSECTING FORMS TO CREATE PRIMARY AND SECONDARY SPACES. THE PROGRAM IS DOMINATED BY THREE POOLS, AN OLYMPIC SIZED POOL, A DIVE POOL, AND A RECREATION POOL. THESE POOLS ARE HOUSED IN THE THREE PRIMARY FORMS. SUPPORTING PROGRAM INCLUDING LOCKER ROOMS, CIRCULATION, CONCESSIONS, AND HVAC ARE HOUSED IN THE INTERSECTIONS. THE UPPER MEZZANINE ALLOWS FOR ACCESS AND VIEWING OF ALL THREE SPACES. THE USE OF INDIVIDIAL-LIKE STRUCTURE ALLOWS FOR STRONG DELINIATIONS OF THE FOCUSES OF EACH POOL AND PROGRAM BUT DOES NOT FORCE A SPECTATOR OR VISITOR TO BE CONFINED TO ONE AREA.

SITE PLAN
MEZZANINE PLAN THE GROUND FLOOR PLAN INCLUDES ACCESS TO THE COMMUNITY AND DIVE POOLS AS WELL AS ACCESS THE THE EXTERIOR POOL. IT INCLUDES THE LOBBY, OFFICES FOR STAFF AND COACHES AS WELL AS, LOCKER ROOMS AND OTHER SUPPORTING PROGRAM.

THE REAR VIEW PERSPECTIVE, AND REAR VIEW OF THE MODEL AT 1/16” = 1’, HIGHLIGHT THE USE OF THE INTERSECTED REGIONS. THE SLIGHT VARIATION BETWEEN THE GLULAM STRUCTURE IN THE MODEL AND PERSPECTIVE IS THE RESULT OF ADJUSTMENTS TO THE DESIGN SO THAT THE INTERSECTIONS COULD BE UTILIZED FURTHER BY THE PROGRAM. THIS DEVELOPMENT TOOK THE DESIGN FROM A GEOMETRY OF TRUNCATED SEMI-CIRCLES TO ORGANIC FORMS.

KAYAK AND SKI HOUSE AT BALD EAGLE STATE PARK

KAYAK AND SKI HOUSE AT BALD EAGLE STATE PARK SITE DESCRIPTION AND PROJECT OBJECTIVE: BALD EAGLE STATE PARK IS LOCATED APPROXIMATELY 30 MINUTES FROM STATE COLLEGE. THE OBJECTIVE WAS TO DESIGN A SKI AND KAYAK HOUSE LOCATED THERE. THE SITE HAS MULTIPLE TRAILS AND A MAN MADE LAKE. INTERLOCK: THE PUPROSE OF THIS DESIGN WAS TO INTERLOCK THE BUILDING WITH THE SURROUNDING NATURAL SITE. TO ACHIEVE THIS I CREATED A MODULE THAT THE BUILDING FOLLOWED VERY STRICTLY AND WAS APPLIED PROGRESSIVELY LESS STRICTLY ON THE SURROUNDING SITE.
PROGRAMATIC DESIGN THE CONCEPT OF “INTERLOCKING” WAS APPLIED TO BOTH THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE BUILDING AND THE SITE AS WELL AS THE SPACES AND PROGRAM WITHING THE BUILING SHOWN IN PLAN AND SECTION, SPACES SUCH AS THE CAFE AND THE RETAIL AREA ARE INTERLOCKED THROUGH OPEN TO BELOW SPACES AND VARYING CEILING HEIGHTS.
MODULE: MODULE IS AN IMPORTANT ELEMENT OF THE DESIGN. IT IS PRESENT IN THE SITE ANALYSIS AND MODELING- SHOWN ON THIS PAGE AS WELL AS THE BUILDING STRUCTURE IN DETAIL. IT IS THE DRIVING FACTOR OF THE DESIGN AS A WHOLE.

MODULE VS DESIGN: ABOVE, THE 12’ MODULE IS DEPICTED AND BROKEN DOWN WITH MAJOR AND MINOR GRID LINES. 12’ WAS CHOSEN SPECIFICALLY FOR ITS ABILITY TO BREAK DOWN INTO ODDS, EVENS AND VARIOUS FRACTION. USING 12’ ALSO ALLOWED ME TO INTERLOCK UPPER LEVELS WITH LOWER LEVELS WITH A 1/3 OVERLAP (4’) AND STILL HAVE AN ALLOWABLE CEILING HEIGHT OF 8’. BELOW, IS AN IMAGE DEPICTING THE ACTUAL DESIGN OF THE KAYAK AND SKI HOUSE AS A RESULT OF THE DESIGN MODULE.
23
MODELING SITE-MANIPULATION: THE GRID ON THE BUILDING AND THE SITE INDICATES MANIPULATION OF THE SPACE AS WELL AS THE PRESENCE OF THE 12 FT MODULE. THE BUILDING ITSELF IS CLEARLY IN CONTRAST TO THE NATURAL AND ORGANIC FORM OF THE SITE. IT IS REPRESENTED IN WHITE TO SHOW ITS FOREIGN MATERIALS AS WELL AS IN GRID PAPER TO SHOW THE PRESENCE OF THE MODULE. THE SURROUNDING LANDSCAPE IS DESIGNED TO BE A NATURAL EXTENSION OF THE BUILDING. THESE SPACES ARE SHOWN IN BROWN WITH THE SAME GRIDED MODULE TO SHOW THAT WHILE THEY ARE NATURAL ELEMENTS, THEY ARE PLANNED ELEMENTS OF THE SITE. PURELY BROWN AREAS REPRESENT THE NATURAL, UNMANIPULATED LANDSCAPE SURROUNDING THE IMEDIATE SITE.

PREMIO PIRANESI COMPETITION: PARK AND SPA AT HADRIANS VILLA SITE DESCRIPTION AND PROJECT OBJECTIVE: THE PREMIO PIRANESI COMPETITION WAS A GROUP DESIGN COMPETITION LASTING TWO WEEKS. IT PROPOSED A PARK AND A SPA TO COMPLIMENT HADRIANS VILLA AND STIMULATE TOURISM. I WAS THE TEAM LEADER OF A GROUP OF SIX STUDENTS. I FOCUSED PRIMARILY ON DESIGNS FOR THE PARK. IMAGES OF THE BUILDING DESIGN ARE BELOW THE IMAGES FOLLOWING FOCUS ON THE PARK AND MY PERSONAL WORK IN TANDEM WITH MY GROUP. EXPERIENCING THE VILLA: AFTER VISITING HADRIANS VILLA, MY TEAM MEMEBERS AND I WERE INSPIRED. HOWEVER, WE NOTICED THAT WHILE THERE ARE MANY OPPORTUNITIES TO VIEW FEATURES OF THE VILLA, VISITORS COULD BENEFIT FROM AN IMMERSIVE EXPERIENCE FOR ALL THE SENSES. MANY OF THE DESIGNS IN THE PARK AIM TO CREATE A SIMILAR PHYSICAL EXPERIENCE FOR VISITORS AS THEY MIGHT HAVE HAD WHEN HADRIANS VILLA WAS ACTIVE.

PUBLIC PARK: OUTSIDE THE PARK REQUIRING TICKETING THERE IS A SMALL PUBLIC PARK TO SERVE THE LOCAL COMMUNITY AS WELL AS ATRACT VISITORS TO THE PARK AND SPA. THIS PARK INCLUDES VEGITATION TERRACES, GARDENS, A JOGGING/WALKING LOOP, JUNGLE GYMS AND OTHER SUPPORTING PROGRAM TO SERVE THE COMMUNITY. NORTHEAST SECTION: THIS AREA INCLUDES A BOATING POND WITH AN ISLAND AS WELL AS A “FLOATING GARDEN”, RENDERED ON PAGE 32. THE BOATING POND ENCOMPASING AN ISLAND MIMICS THE EXPERIENCE HADRIAN MAY HAVE HAD ON HIS PERSON ISLAND WITH A SURROUNDING MOAT DESIGNED FOR PRIVACY AND ESCAPE. THE FLOATING GARDEN WAS INSPIRED BY THE DINING AREAS SURROUNDED BY WATER AT HADRIANS VILLA FOR COOLING PROPERTIES AS WELL AS PRIVACY. HADRIANS VILLA DOES NOT HAVE RUNNING WATER SO SOME THE THE DESIGN FEATURES CANNOT BE EXEPRIENCED AND THE PARK AIMS TO PROVIDE THIS QUALITY. CENTRAL PROCESSIONAL SECTION: THIS AREA INCLUDES A PROCESSIONAL AREA, RENDERED ON PAGE 32, INSPIRED BY THE LONG WALKWAYS OF HADRIANS VILLA. IT USES STONE ARCHES TO EMULATE THE MATERIALS OF THE VILLA AS WELL AS THE PRIMARY BASIC FORMS. THE WALKWAY WITH ADJACENT FLOWING WATER AND VEGETATION, ALSO RENDERED ON PAGE 32, PROVIDES AN ADDITIONAL AREA OF MOVING WATER, A STRONG ELEMENT OF HADRIANS VILLA AS WELL AS PRIVACY AND SOLITUDE.
