Campo Santa Margherita, in the sestiere (neighbourhood) of Dorsoduro, is one of the main squares in Venice covering 6700 m2. Exploring the complex relationship between a well-established local cultural identity and the increasing phenomenon or mass tourism, the project will revolve around an external intervention on one or more areas of this square, with a total footprint not exceeding 1500 m2. The aim is to promote a constructive dialogue between these parts, keeping in mind the existing Venetian genius loci.

Very little sunlight during the winter mornings. The longer side of the square (North) is uniformely lit during Spring and Summer. Sunlight also in the Western end of the square.

At Midday during the winter, the West side of the square gets no direct sunlight. In Summer however, it is all uniformely lit.

The South-East corner of the square gets the most sunlight during the winter. Traditionally locals hang their laundry on this side. Cast shadows from the buildings on the West side are more appreciated during heat waves in the Summer.

El Campo De Cebada, Madrid, Spain Reclaimed public space in Madrid Spain. Public market first, then sports centre that closed down. It is now used as a gathering space for public activities and community events thanks to the local community and young architects who claimed the space. Site for street festivals and cultural events supported by the authorities after seeing the huge success.

Strøget District, Copenhagen, Denmark The complex network of pedestrian streets in the Strøget District of Copenhagen was created starting from 1962. Strøget used to be a heavily congestioned traffic artery, giving no space for pedestrians to stop and enjoy the city. Despite an initial hostility from the main fluxes of traffic, cars were diverted, following Jan Gehl’s suggestions, creating a lively, enjoyable area for pedestrians and local community. Comparison between motorised traffic vs pedestrians in Denmark and high density pedestrian flux vs more casual pedestrian movement in Venice.

Main configuration of campos in Venice: open space/buildings/religious buildings

Scale 1:1000

Venice is a highly dense city. Campo Santa Margherita is one of the few large open spaces in its neighbourhood (sestiere of Dorsoduro). From the model, it can be seen how there are other open areas in its proximity. Unfortunately they are all private, or part of the University of Venice and there is no direct public access to them.

Scale 1:500

Variety of buildings in Campo Santa Margherita. Faรงades go from the Gothic and Byzantine examples of the smaller buildings close to the Carmini church, to more modern buildings restyled with a mid 20th century appeal. This variety of styles coexist organically within the square.
