RED SQUARE. TOLERANCE PAVILION HMMD’s brief is to design an architectural vision, a temporary pavilion for the education of social, political and religious tolerance, to be erected in Russia’s Red Square, Moscow. This new pavilion is to be conceived as a structure incorporating educational spaces, with lecture and workshop rooms as well as exhibition spaces. Participants are also urged to consider other recreational and public spaces to support these educational programs.

The design of this pavilion has the concept of tolerance as:

COURSE:

- FREEDOM of expression, education, creativity and sharing of cultures - PLAYFULNESS and a driving force of the concept of FEELING GOOD

We created an space that encourages interaction of crowds walking through the Red Square, using architectural forms to promote the exploration of the pavilion. The main components of the design are:

Spatial blocks Spatial blocks:

- SOLID SPACES to show tolerance in both its dark and brighter aspects State Historical Museum - RIBBON: an architectural device encouraging movement across the different solid spaces and the square

The design of this pavilion had the concept of ‘tolerance’ in all its aspects as its driving force. For us tolerance is not only accepting what is different from the mainstream culture, but it is also the promotion of a positive attitude to make people feel good, regardless of their religion, education or political and personal beliefs. Critical Sense of Welcoming Thinking freedom Hope for feeling Darkness the future Critical past a space that will For this reasonin wethe created encourage interaction, Thinking playfulness and curiosity in the crowds walking through the Red Square while being subtly led through it with the use of an architectural Rest device that will engage its users. The design can be divided into two main components: solid spaces and ribbon.

BRIEF: HMMD’s architecture competition is dedicated to ‘designing for tolerance’ to create a temporary pavilion for the education of social, political and religious tolerance, in Russia’s Red Square.

When creating solid spaces with specific functions we kept in mind the idea of ‘experience’. This pavilion, although temporary, is to leave MASSING DEVELOPMENT: a lasting footprint in the collective identity of the square. We strongly believe that more than forms and colours, people remember engaging experiences that made them feel good or which stimulated their daily lives.

Tolerance Pavilion

We divided the spatial experiences into “darkness in the past” and “light for the future“. Users are encouraged to go through a workshop and a gallery showing the dark past of tolerance throughout history. This is reflected by both the exhibitions themselves and the more frequent solidity of the ribbon on this side.

Blocks and Ribbon Blocks and Ribbon:

A second set of spaces show tolerance in its brighter and more hopeful movements, encouraging action for a better future with the ribbon dipping down and opening up to sit on and walk through, interacting with the users. The paths within the pavilion are not fixed. Crowds can walk from darkness to light, light to darkness, or freely explore the area. This “square within a square” is also open as a space to rest and play and also offers a unique opportunity for a privileged view of the square from a peak point above the café that you can walk up to. The ribbon is a visual informing element to encourage certain paths and give unity to the pavilion. Its turquoise and red blocks represent playfulness, an unbiased political position and most importantly the di-Site plan 1:2000

NUCLEAR REPOSITORY Rough open land

COURSE:

This project aims at using the sun as a constant at a specific time of the day as a powerful marker itself.

Design For Exhibitions & Display Edinburgh City Centre

Carving the volcanic rock on the side of Blackford Hill, the barrier that is created is designed to resist extremely long time spans and weather conditions. Information provided to deter from site are both VERBAL and GRAPHIC.

Allotments

A certain degree of FREEDOM is left to visitors to remark it, add a religious meaning to the site or leave it. The purpose of the design remain CONSTANT regardless of its use.

BRIEF: The aim of this project is to create a marker for a nuclear repository visible enough to prevent human interference. The marker should inform about the nature of the area and last for at least 100,000 years given the high risks linked to nuclear waste.

The light reflecting barrier is designed so that during midday, when the sunlight is at its peak throughout the whole year, sun rays can be redirected towards a specific point on the site. This effect works 365 days a year as the barrier is made of different layers of carved polished panels, orientated perpendicularly to both the surface and the sun beam normal vector.

BRIEF: Design of a small-scale architectural project suggesting a unique and insightful combination of functions and businesses. The design must deal with the combining of different companies and similar entities that can help an enterprise grow rapidly.

Timber cladding Pressed soil Cast iron posts

Considering the abundance public green space in Edinburgh but restricted access to private gardens the project aims at providing shelter and privacy in public parks. The result are pods which can be mounted both outdoors and indoors to break from the crowd. These installations are provided by a central business located in Morningside with a showroom displaying the different available pods.

The interiors of the showroom want to reflect the idea of a greenhouse. They are an open space keeping enclosed spaces at a minimum. An office and admin area created with see partitions allows visual contact between shop floor and visitors. The only enclosed area id a staff room and toilet facilities created with solid sliding panels fitting the curved lines of the other main spaces.

Pod for interiors with bamboo plants

2 kinds of pods to suit better the needs of customers: The indoor pod has a lightweight structure that can be easily assembled. Pots and plants places inside will intertwine with the structure to shade from light and the crowd. The outdoor pod is a bigger scale structure. It would be fixed to the ground and ideally placed in public gardens. There are benches inside and place to position bamboo plants. The main material is laminated timber.

CONTEMPORARY CRANNOG COURSE: Design for Living Spaces

Tigh Mor Trossachs Church Location of Crannogs

Loch Achray is a small loch situated in Perthshire, it is a popular hiking and kayaking and has historical sights on its North side. Locating the crannogs on the South side allows the creation of low key settlements balancing the historical buildings. The crannogs can be reached by car from the Duke’s pass or by boat. They are made entirely of insulated mdf panels and sits on Gabion walls, so that it can be dismounted completely if needed.
