It is a privilege for me once again to write the welcome remarks for NSCAD University’s Graduation Catalogue. This is the fourth year of this publication, which highlights the best works of our newest alumni – the 2010 graduating class. Throughout these pages, through extraordinary creative practices, you will see our future arts leaders. The students whose works populate these pages will together transform the cultural landscape of Canada and NSCAD is so proud to have contributed to their journey as artists.
David B. Smith President
This catalogue is sent to galleries around the world, it is sent to proud parents across the country, and in many cases, it is the beginning of a professional portfolio for our graduating students. It is also a testament to the powerful partnerships NSCAD has struck with the corporate community. RBC Financial Group, through the RBC Emerging Artists Project, has been the sponsor of this catalogue since its inception. The partnership between NSCAD and RBC works on many levels, from raising the profile of students in our community to providing them with a professional self-marketing tool in the Graduation Catalogue. Furthermore, the experience allows students to build key business skills as working artists. Thank you, RBC, for making this experience available to our students through your meaningful investment. I wish to extend my sincere best wishes to all our new alumni and their families. I also want to congratulate two NSCAD students in particular who have worked tirelessly on producing this catalogue and its corresponding exhibition: Cait Vachon, who designed the 2010 catalogue and sol Legault, who curated the 2010 Graduation Exhibition.

As one of Canada’s most respected corporations, RBC values creative thinking as integral to vibrant communities and the key to successful business. Investing in creative talent has long been a priority for us, and we are proud to put our convictions into action through the RBC Emerging Artists Project.
Stewart Robinson Vice President & Branch Manager, Nova Scotia Group, RBC Dominion Securities
Helping talented students make the transition from the academic to the entrepreneurial world of the arts is evident in our ongoing partnership with NSCAD and is one of many ways in which we encourage creative expression in Canada. Former students, now artists, who have been touched by RBC Emerging Artist funding are in galleries, theatres and creative institutions coast to coast, contributing to the cultural fabric of our nation. By featuring the work of NSCAD students in our Halifax office and supporting the graduation exhibition and catalogue, we are excited to know that our role in their careers may be only just beginning. RBC is proud to celebrate creative vision and artistic talent in our community, and wishes NSCAD University graduates continued success.

Taking the big step out into the world can be daunting for an artist, craftsperson or designer these days. As we begin to look back on what we have learned and accomplished in our time here at NSCAD, we will see that what we have gained is directly proportional to the effort and passion we have poured into our work. Challenges set before us by our teachers and peers have been instrumental in developing our creative problem-solving skills and fostering a critical engagement with the world around us. It is we, however, who are charged with the responsibility to take advantage of this valuable experience and apply it to whatever we undertake in the world beyond school.
sol Legault 2010 Graduation Exhibition Curator
One of the most exciting features of this university is its broad range of disciplines. My goal in designing this year’s catalogue has been to highlight diversity by presenting each work to its best advantage within the rich mosaic of art, craft and design. The Twenty Ten Graduation Catalogue does not follow the traditional approach of categorizing entries alphabetically and by discipline. Instead, each submission has been selected and placed according to its underlying aesthetic.
Endless studio sessions, wild NSCAD dances, Monday night gallery openings, getting lost in the stairways at Granville campus, studentled events and movements, daily encounters with ever-helpful department staff, as well as the unique personal connections and relationships we hold dear, all add up to a wealth of experience that will stay with us forever. We, as emerging artists/designers/craftspeople, need to remember that our critical and dedicated approaches to our work and the world are invaluable. In a time when art can be sorely undervalued, we must continue the work that is important to us, and get it out there to make it known that it is important to all. Remember that art is what makes a culture rich. I offer congratulations and good fortune to my peers, the graduating class of 2010!
6
Like many other students coming in from across the country, this was my first year studying at NSCAD University.
On the cover you’ll see traces of a few words. The cover design began as an index of the many disciplines of study at NSCAD. The words that formed the titles and descriptions were then fragmented, overlapped, coloured, and repeated until they became a textured, woven fabric. This multi-dimensional fabric represents NSCAD, its solidarity and the diverse talents of its graduating students.
Cait Vachon 2010 Graduation Catalogue Designer and Coordinator cait.vachon@gmail.com On behalf of NSCAD University and the graduating class of 2010,
I would like to thank Meridian Communications for their generous sponsorship and support throughout this project.

On behalf of the NSCAD graduating class of 2010, I would like to extend a hearty thank-you to all of the donors to the Graduation Exhibition opening reception. These local organizations share our strong sense of commitment to the Halifax community and to the arts. It is this dedication that has helped to make both the 2010 NSCAD Catalogue and Graduation Exhibition exciting and successful celebrations of the talent of emerging students. We, at the Anna Leonowens Gallery and at NSCAD, are proud to work with these important members of our community, and look forward to ongoing collaboration in the future! sol Legault 2010 Graduation Exhibition Curator 114
