GRID COVERPAGE After placing a grid over the cover page of the Maclean’s Magazine I have noticed that the layout is incredibly symmetrical. I am able to find four prominent columns that every element on the cover can fit in. Maclean’s is a magazine suited toward a specific demographic therefore they must keep the same organized look month after month which explains their arrangement. The top section of the cover, which includes the large bold title, takes 1/3 of the space on the page. It references the empty white space created at the bottom of the page that makes it seem perfectly divided into thirds. The title of the magazine along with page information above it is centered. Also at the top, there is a right

justified text in the first column and left justified text in the fourth column. These justifications border the text between the two and only add to the pages’ symmetry. The image of the Bonhomme Carnaval and the bold text beside it are balanced and individually encompass two of the four columns. An illusive white border surrounds each element on the page without any overlapping or haphazard placement. The thickness of the white border is similar as the distance directly above and below the title. Every text and image stays within their specific boundaries and don’t go outside the line.

The content page of Maclean’s Magazine, unlike the four columns of the cover page, can be divided into eight columns in which everything fits. You are able to see the smaller number of columns when looking at the lower section of the page. This section is comprised of the eight columns with centered justified text in the middle of each. The content

page as a whole is also very symmetrical. Every text and image box is placed in an orderly manner and none of them veers away from the organized look that Maclean’s is well known for. Again, a suggested white border surrounds the content on the page. At the top of the page, the title along with a subtitle below it and the date/volume are all centered justified. These three text boxes take up the two middle columns. The three images can be evenly split to fit the eight-column grid. Also centered is the text box below the images that sits on top of two larger columns of the same height and width although the highlighted titles in each column are not lined up. This is due to the unequal number of listings within these highlighted categories.

2PAGESPREAD This twopage spread taken from Maclean’s magazine can be separated in to three larger columns per page or nine smaller columns on each page. A large image sits directly at the top edge of the pages but is not centered between the two. It consumes the last of the three large columns on the first page and 1 1/3 on the following. Unlike the rest of the page layout the image box does not follow the “white bordered guidelines” that surrounding the content. Two large bold titles, on each side of the large image box, are perfectly aligned and fit in to the larger columns. At the bottom of the two pages there are a number of text boxes that are left justified and line up within the columns but do not necessarily share the same width. An image box fits in the first column at the bottom and aligns with the text box to its right. At the far right of the pages a column is filled with centered text from top to bottom. At the very bottom of the pages sit page numbers, the magazine title and a date in which they are all aligned as well as justified from left to right.

By taking the grid pattern of the first two-page spread and placing it on top of the second two pages found in the magazine I am able to find many similarities. The same white border surrounds the two-page content and also has the same justified and aligned page information at the very bottom. Text and images fall within the same six columns. A difference between the two; the second page spread does not have a larger image that falls to the edge of the page but six smaller images of various sizes are placed vertically to fit one column. Another small image box is centered between the first two columns matching the grid pattern of the first grid. Horizontal lines toward the bottom of the pages differ the appropriate pattern however vertically both grids match reasonably well. The title at the top left of the page rests perfectly at the center of two columns. Every text box aligns together at the top. Comparing the two shows that one grid system is parallel to the other. There is no colouring outside of the lines when it comes to this magazine. Macleanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s is very symmetrical and rarely veers away from its standard controlled appearance, which is perhaps the reason why it is so successful in keeping their purchasers.
