Wall Of Defense
Bahrain has a long history of designing and building beautiful architecture. In Muharraq District, the tangles of winding alleys are lined with ancient houses with their traditional ArabGulf style of architecture, showcasing the past trappings of prosperity and patient art of those who adorned them with intricate carvings. >>> Recently, in an effort to safeguard Bahrainâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s historic heritage, the government carried out massive restoration and refurbishment work on some of the kingdomâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s old homes and historic buildings, including Arad Fort. Arad is derived from Arados, the old name for Muharraq during the Tylos or Greek period, estimated to be from about 300 BC to the early first millennium. Muharraq was the capital of Bahrain until 1932, when Manama became the seat of government.
There are not enough resources available on the history of Arad Fort, so the precise time of its construction is unknown. However, many historians believed it was built between the end of the 15th century and early 16th century. In 1521, the Portuguese occupied the fort, using their fleet stationed in Oman (Hormuz). Subsequently, the ancient coastal fortification is thought to have been used by the Omanis during their brief occupation of Bahrain in

Art Venue
At present, the fort is sometimes used to host events and concerts, including performances of world-renowned artists who descend on Bahrain for the annual Spring of Culture art festival. The pulsing rhythms of contemporary art throb at Arad Fort. So does ancient life. Visiting hours are from 8am-2pm Sunday through Wednesday, 9am-6pm Thursdays and Saturdays, and 3pm-6pm on Fridays. Entrance fee is 200 fils.
1800. During their rule, they used the fort as a military defense wall and for quashing domestic opposition, before Arab soldiers finally took it over. Now co-existing with modern commercial buildings and affluent villas nearby, the fort is in close proximity to Bahrainâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s international airport, adjacent to the strategic waterways between Bahrain and Muharraq. The fort is square and a cylindrical tower can be found on every corner. In every corner of the upper wall of the fort are nose-shaped openings. A small trench, which used to be filled with water from nearby wells, surrounds it. In the past, the fort relied on dug wells nearby for fresh water supply.
Renovation
The fort has recently gone through extensive renovation, using largely original materials, such as beach rock (coral limestone), sand, and palm trunks. Preservationists avoided using
any other materials, including cement, which might diminish the historic character of the structure. Clay and palm trunks were obtained from Bahrain and stones from Muharraq. Local excavations provided the aggregates. Original construction techniques were applied,including horizontal layers of rendered masonry. The full extent of the restoration work included recreating the outer fortifications.
An inner fortified square with four corner bastions was erected within an outer square with four corner towers. The upper parts of the north-west, north-east and south-west inner walls were rebuilt and topped by rifle holes and crenellations, and the interior of the north bastion was transformed. Consolidation works included reinforcement of corroded walls with industrial brick struts.

ENRICO MARI GREGO When the world-renowned Milan-based architectural firm MGA+C Enrico Mari Grego Architects descended on Bahrain and made it the hub of its pan-Arabian operations, industry watchers asked why. Enrico Mari Grego, the founder of the firm, sat down with Sur La Terre to answer.
Why did you choose Bahrain, which must, after all, be a huge contrast to Milan? Bahrain is a wonderful country; it is multicultural, open and free. I have worked throughout the Middle East, and whenever I return to Bahrain, it feels as if I am going home. Bahrain exudes a certain charm. The country may be small, but I find it endlessly engaging and interesting. And it is not just me: we fly many people in for meetings, and everyone agrees that it is a little gem. What part of your practice is actually being done in Bahrain? The MGA+C portfolio crosses countries and continents.Until now,all our overseas operations were coordinated by the head office in Milan. With an ever-expanding international workload to manage, overseas expansion is inevitable. We have a large team in Bahrain, which is the hub for all our planned pan-Arabian operations. We have already scored some measure of success by being appointed as architects for a luxurious residential development on Amwaj Islands, and
we have more prestigious projects currently in Bahrain Bay, Bahrain Financial Harbour and World Trade Centre. How are you finding Bahrain and the Middle East in general? Financially and commercially, the Gulf region has matured rapidly, bringing in an everincreasing number of professionals and tourists. A new sophistication has emerged, and there is a willingness to embrace innovative ideas and concepts. I find it very exciting to be a part of it. That an ever-increasing number of international talents are coming into the Middle East is an irrefutable indication of its success and stability. Does MGA+C have a philosophy that sets it apart from other architectural practices? We regard a building as being much more than the sum of the materials that went into its construction. A building is an entity, practically a living thing, and one that must be created to function in harmony both with its environment and with the people who

Is the Middle East part of your long-term plan? We are committed to the Middle East and are excited and delighted by the challenges and opportunities that exist here. We are here for the long haul and, judging by the amount of interest and activity that we have already generated, we will be very busy indeed. will occupy it. We strive to produce working and living spaces that are both efficient and beautiful, places that actively improve the quality of life of those within them. We use colour and lighting to conjure up moods of tranquility, excitement and coziness. The concept that â&#x20AC;&#x153;Design Mattersâ&#x20AC;? is becoming increasingly understood, and companies that wish to build are approaching MGA+C because they know that good design is integral to all our structures. Representing the full scope of Islamic art, the collection is comprised of well preserved and detailed manuscripts, ceramics, metal, glass, ivory, textiles, wood and precious stones, amongst others. Following intense rumour and speculation, the manufacturer Cessna has unveiled its latest wide-bodied business jet, the Citation Columbus. This announcement is a major step for the American aircraft manufacturer as it is the largest aircraft ever to leave its workshops. With a name that predestines it for major trips, the Citation Columbus has a comfortable 11m long cabin. With a sitting area, a bar, office space, washrooms and direct access to the baggage hold, the interior layout has all the
features to make the flight a pleasant one for the potential ten passengers on board. Two new-generation Pratt & Whitney jet engines are fitted to the transatlantic aircraft and it is certainly high-performing: maximum speed of Mach 0.8 and a fuel range of 7â&#x20AC;&#x2122;400 km, in other words Paris-New York or London-Dubai direct. The aircraftâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s first flight is scheduled for 2011; the price is however already known - 27 million dollars.

Not breaking with tradition, the manufacturer Beechcraft has also announced a new arrival in its range of aircraft. Located in the light jet sector, the Beechcraft Premier II is a logical follow-on from the Premier IA. Like its predecessor, the fuselage is built entirely of advanced composite materials that are both lighter (+20%) and more rigid (+70%) than aluminium. This feature, combined with the addition of two new jet engines from Williams International and a pair of redesigned wings,
gives the aircraft a comfortable range of 2’778 km. A true little bolide of the skies, the Premier II is one of the fastest in its category, with a maximum speed nearly touching 900 km/h. Its inaugural flight is scheduled for April 2009.

In an industry where it is essential to offer “what is best”, the aircraft manufacturer Gulfstream made a big splash when presenting the successor to its already prestigious G550. The G650 will fuel the American manufacturer’s claim of offering the fastest jet on the market with a maximum speed of Mach 0.925. Beating all the records, the aircraft also has the largest fuel range in its category - 13’000 km -, meaning a singlehaul flight from Dubai to New York or London to Buenos Aires. The potential eight passengers will also appreciate an impressivelysized cabin (16.33 m long, 1.95 m high and 2.95 m wide), which thus sets a new standard. With outstanding features and price; you have to spend 58.5 million dollars to buy yourself “what is best”, making the G650 the most expensive private jet to date. Really. First deliveries planned for 2012.

Embraer Legacy 450 & 500 The Brazilian aircraft manufacturer Embraer made the most of EBACE 2008 in Geneva to unveil two new models, the Legacy 450 and 500, with great ceremony. They are designed to supplement the manufacturer’s range in the medium-sized jet market. The Legacy 450 can carry up to eight passengers with a fuel range of 4’000 km, whereas its big brother has an increased range of 5’200 km for the same number of passengers. Both aircraft are
fitted with Honeywell HTF7500E jet engines with the latest technology in noise reduction and polluting emissions. As for its Phenom range, the manufacturer has joined forces with BMW to design cabins which, given the first depictions, should be models of design. The Legacy 500 ($18.4 million) should be launched onto the market in the second quarter of 2012, with the Legacy 450 ($15.25 million) following a year later.

Eclipse Aviation is continuing to invest in the Very Light Jet sector with the announcement of a fourseater monojet, the Eclipse 400. The wasp-waisted aircraft has a large V-shaped tail unit at the rear which adds to its aerodynamic appearance. Mechanically, the superb machine is powered by a Pratt & Whitney PW615F jet engine, capable of a maximum speed of 600 km/h. Note that the aircraft has increased its
range by almost 400 km over its big brother, the Eclipse 500, with a fuel range of 2â&#x20AC;&#x2122;300 km. In terms of price, the 1.35 million dollars announced by the aircraft manufacturer makes the Eclipse 400 one of the most affordable jets on the market. Orders may already be placed and the first deliveries are scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2011.
Marketed exclusively on the American market until now, the Hondajet order book is henceforth open to European customers. The first future owner is already known - the F1 driver Jensen Button, who is acquiring two aircraft for his new business aviation company. With the first deliveries maintained for 2010, the Japanese manufacturer also presented
a new version of the jet interior. Resolutely ergonomic and modern, the cabin design is enhanced by a series of perfectly-integrated chromium and precious wood inserts. Outside, the aircraft continues to stand out from the competition with its two-tone bodywork and its two turbojets mounted just over the wings.

Leader in the top-of-the-range aircraft sector, the manufacturer Dassault Aviation caught everyoneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s attention when it unveiled a new model in the Falcon series. This threejet aircraft known as the 900LX is based on the Honeywell TFE731-60, an engine which has proved its reliability with over 540,000 total hours flown. Based on the same platform as the Falcon 900EX, the aircraft
nevertheless has the distinctive feature of added anti-turbulence blades and above all a greatly improved fuel range (8â&#x20AC;&#x2122;900 km). The wherewithal to link New York to Moscow, Paris to Beijing or Mumbai to London, without stopover. With Falcon comes responsibility the lucky passengers can revel in a spacious and perfectly soundproof cabin, a blend of leather, precious wood and flat screens.
Certification for the aircraft is scheduled for the first half of 2010 with a market launch later that year.

After Versace and its A109S Grand, now it is Hermès unveiling its vision of the private helicopter. “Helicopter by Hermès” is its name, the fruit of collaboration between the manufacturer Eurocopter which entrusted a twin-engine EC 135 to the renowned leather goods maker for the occasion. The result is a haute couture machine which does not go unnoticed. The exterior remains minimalist with nevertheless a small quirky touch heightened by this orange spiral crossing the fuselage from one side to the other. As you might imagine, inside is where things become interesting. The fully-redesigned cabin has far more light and space than the “basic” version. A transparent, sliding partition, embossed with the H of the Parisian maker, now separates the passenger compartment from the cockpit. The mythical “Toile H” is used generously from floor to ceiling, whilst the seats and benches are covered in calf leather, an extremely strong leather with unrivalled comfort. And the pilots of this outstanding machine can share in the experience, as the cockpit has been designed with the same care. Note that even the landing gear has been given a relook. And how much do you have to pay to fly with Hermès? 5 million euros.

With a totally carbon fibre fuselage, wide wheels and reinforced landing gear, the Grob SPn is the only jet capable of taking off and landing on unconcreted runways or grass. Just like the aircraft manufacturer Embraer, who has approached BMW for the interior design of some of its aircraft, Grob has joined forces with the car manufacturer Porsche to design the SPn cabin. The end result - an elegant, modern atmosphere which should enchant the eight passengers the aircraft can carry. In terms of performance, note a maximum speed of 769 km/h and a fuel range of 3â&#x20AC;&#x2122;334 km (with six passengers), i.e. a direct flight from Zurich to Cairo. In testing phase since 2006, the Grob SPn should enter into production by the end of 2008.

Elie Saab has become synonymous with luxury and modernism. A serious couturier with a powerful and unique vision, Saab was born in Beirut on fourth July, and his interest in dressmaking became apparent at an early age. At only 9 years old, he spent much of his free time cutting patterns and drawing sketches for his sisters using his mother’s tablecloths and curtains. >>> In 1982, at the tender age of 18, Elie Saab opened his first atelier in Lebanon with ten employees. He began designing luxurious evening gowns and exquisite wedding dresses and quickly proved that his talent surpassed his age when he showed his first collection at the Casino Du Liban in Beirut. Garnering extensive media coverage, Saab’s astounding debut collection dazzled the Lebanese press, who instantly dubbed him the “precocious genius.” Throughout the 1980’s, the Elie Saab couture house became a magnet for princesses clamoring to buy his lavish evening wear. His successive couture collections have been an enduring testament to his ability to innovate, as Saab showcased clothing that was always feminine and alluring on the runway. In the 1990’s, as Saab’s reputation spread through the international media, he continued to expand his business, moving to a larger atelier in Beirut and organizing exclusive fashion shows in Europe. Another landmark moment came for Saab in 1997, when he was invited to take part in the prestigious Camera Nazionale della Moda as the only nonItalian designer to be invited at that time. He also began to show his couture collection in Rome during Alta Moda Fashion week. With new showroom representation in Italy in 1998, Saab launched his first ready-to-wear collection in Milan to rave reviews. The collection experienced tremendous success, gathering sales worldwide including Paris, London, Madrid, Moscow, Los Angeles, New York and Hong Kong. In 2000, Saab opened a salon and showroom in Paris’s eighth arrondissement to target his cosmopolitan and international clientele. That same year, he began showing his couture collection in the city, creating a buzz among the fashion elite.

It wasn’t until 2002, however, that Saab finally achieved his star status when Halle Berry wore an Elie Saab gown to the Oscars and won best actress award. Saab’s designs have since become a favorite amongst other A-list celebrities including Christina Aguilera, Beyoncé, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Elizabeth Hurley, Marcia Cross, Emmanuelle Béart, and Teri Hatcher. He is also the couturier of royals such as the stylish Queen Rania of Jordan. Saab’s final breakthrough came in July of 2003 when he showed his Haute Couture collection in Paris as an officially invited member of the prestigious Chambre Syndicale. The response from the press and retailers was overwhelming and two years later, in October of 2005, Saab launched his expanded ready-to-wear collection on the Paris runway - a place he now calls home. Elie Saab’s business continues to expand. In 2005, he opened his first boutique and moved his headquarters to the heart of downtown Beirut. The five floor, ultra-modern building houses his Atelier, Couture salon, Accessory and Ready-to-Wear collections. A multi-level boutique, also in Paris, opened in March 2007 at 1, Rond Point des Champs-Elysées, where the existing historical building is the base for the sophisticated modernist aesthetic of the new Elie Saab design. The company also plans to increase their worldwide retail presence with additional store openings in New York and London. Elie Saab, a family oriented man, now resides in Paris and Beirut. He is the father of three boys and husband to his wife Claudine.

The first thing that hits you is his delighted child’s smile, as if facing a plethora of new toys. An incomparable asset to still have at 34 what you have been searching for all your life. But make no mistake: underneath his outward signs of youthfulness, Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance is full of amplitude, certainties, rigour and humility which he has applied to major interior design and architectural projects. >>> A Polytechnic graduate-turned-sculptor for a father, an artistic, drawing teacher mother. Difficult for the native of Mende, in France, to escape the creative DNA of such a family mould. But after the death of his father when he was just eighteen months old, the decision was taken to leave the house where they were living, near a hippy community. Mother and son head for Paris, then Brittany. Morlaix Bay opened up all its wide, unpredictable splendour to him. Driftwood polished by salt and sea on the
beaches, next to fishing nets, cuttlefish bones and sea urchin shells tangled up with bunches of seaweed. These foreshores, streaking the sand with strange living undulations, were a source of captivating discoveries for the child. Shapes, textures, smells - the sea and its depths provided him with lasting inspiration. Accompanied by his step-father, an Englishman from South London, he strides along the Brittany coasts where he has lived regularly ever since. The constant affection of this “new father” in

no way blurs the powerful memory of his “real father”. Since he was 12 or 13 Noé DuchaufourLawrance has constantly extended the history of his father through what he wanted to do. A classic approach, undoubtedly, but led here with an essential, constant will. Thus, his first work around sculpture on metal via the applied arts college Ecole supérieure des Arts appliqués Olivier-de-Serres led him towards a meeting of minds with his father, to carve a niche for himself. This long saturation has encouraged him to extend the gesture, to make it his own. “This work reflected my need for continuity, for history, it was a very personal path. I took it for myself. In one way I have buried my father for a second time”, he states today. He thus visited the Milan Furniture Fair at the age of 22, armed simply with nerve and his sketchbook which, at the time, contained virtually nothing but sculptures. He did not hesitate to open his book in front of the most prestigious Italian publishers. Contacts are forged, turning years later into outstanding collaborations. He rounded out his education in the Furniture Section of the decorative arts

college, the Ecole national supérieure des Arts décoratifs. Thibault Desombre and Jean-Marie Massaud make enthusiastic contributions. With his diplomas in his pocket, he sounded out the cinema with film sets, advertising spots and clips. He spent a year in Morocco spurred by a love and desire to explore new things. Good choice. This country was his starting point, his entry route into the profession. He met an architect who involves him in a London project.

Three years of complex work and a similar number to learn about human relationships, the “ups and downs” chapter. In 2002, a year before the creation of his Paris agency Néonata, the Sketch restaurant opened in the British capital under the auspices of its charismatic, Franco-Algerian boss, Mourad Mazouz. Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance is responsible for the interior design and architecture (West Bar Gallery, East Bar, Eggs Toilets), bringing an

avalanche of Cross-Channel praise. Alain Senderens decided to off-load his three Michelin stars, which have given him many years of long and loyal service. Exit “Lucas Carton”, therefore, in place de la Madeleine, the place will revert to the name of the chef. The Duchaufour-Lawrance box had to be ticked to move from the ghost of a gastronomic institution opened in the 18th century to the “Senderens” of today. Majorelle woodwork, classified decor - this was not easy. But the result is clear: modern, refined and welcoming. A few creations further down the line (TAD Concept Store in Milan, Déli-cieux restaurant in Printemps de la Maison in Paris, Manta furniture collection for Ceccotti, Maya Bar in Monaco, Air France Business Lounge in Paris), and the trumpets of fame have now sounded many times, but purity of view and modesty remain invariable. Noé prefers to continue on his way rather than to contemplate his awards or get drunk on Parisian cocktails. “I rarely go to evening receptions. I have two little girls and a great deal of work.” So here’s someone who prefers to be on his sites or at his workbench
than at a party. “I need the energy from the city but also the scale of nature, calm and wisdom. I realise that we do too many things in a hurry, I need fullness.” He has just presented his perfume flask One Million for Paco Rabanne, is fine tuning his exhibition at the Galerie Pierre Bergé in Brussels, exclusive items of furniture launched in December 2008, is continuing with a large scale hotel project in Marrakesh and possibly another one in Switzerland. He is developing a design of furniture for champagne tasting at a large producer, reviewing several anonymous classics of international furniture for an American publisher, planning a collection for the 2009 Milan Furniture Fair, expanding his approach to Air France Business Lounges and Agencies worldwide - with the singlemindedness of true craftsmen, he is weaving his universe. Aerial and powerful, in direct link with natural forms. As in the sculptural collection “Manta” created for Ceccotti, a lyrical image of the sophisticated and moving elegance of the singular fish. As time goes on, Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance is refining his framework and opting for

minimalism. He is maintaining his expression but is ridding himself of devices. What does he wish for principally in the future? “Go to the basics, focus my attention on very precise things” is his reply. “Do less, do better. Introduce relevance into what I do. Re-assess the notion of doing something well. Combine the pleasure of living and the pleasure of doing: enter into a global nature of things, whereby I can take refuge in a workshop in Baie de Somme or an earthen house in Morocco to take the time not to be pressed to produce. That may seem anachronistic given my age, or out of step with the times, but I need this time. Multiplication doesn’t interest me. If I do something, I want to do it in the best way possible. If I have nothing to say, I remain silent. What interests me is to be happy and proud of what I do.” This is the man who, in these uncertain times, does not hesitate to refuse - most politely (highly publicised) projects which provide him with nothing new under the creative heaven, merely cash - without doubt this man has courage. A man of the future.

More than just a water, San Pellegrino (say “San Pell” if you want to be really trendy) has become a symbol, a concept that is intimately linked to a variety of fashion phenomena. Everything about San Pellegrino reflects its determination to be the height of fashion. The brand is even installed in an ultra-modern building right at the heart of the Navigli in Milan. It is now several years since San Pellegrino set out to conquer the world and today it is considered to be the mineral water par excellence, served in most top restaurants and promoting an Italian style that is the symbol of elegance and quality. Legend has it that, as he roamed around Val Brembana, not far from Milan, Leonardo da Vinci discovered the benefits of this water, which sprang from its source at a temperature of 25° Celsius. Over the years the original San Pellegrino mineral spring water, with its 14 mineral salts, became increasingly famous and more and more people came to take the waters, including Cardinal Borromeo, Queen Marguerite and Gabriele d’Annunzio. San Pellegrino saw an unprecedented explosion in popularity in the Edwardian Era. The hot springs became THE place to be, with the whole of European high society flocking to them, encouraging the building of a plethora of hotels, restaurants and villas. Today, three buildings have survived the splendours of this era: the Municipal Casino, the Grand Hotel and the Palazzo della Fonte.

Out to conquer the world
In 1899, Cesare Mazzoni set up San Pellegrino S.p.A Company. Very rapidly, the small green bottles set out to conquer the world. In 1920, Argentina alone imported 2 million bottles. San Pellegrino gradually became the musthave drink at the best European tables. From then onwards, thanks to an all-out marketing campaign, the brandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s star drink became more then just a drink - it became a symbol of the Italian way of life. The jet set drank San
Pellegrino from New York to Sydney to Buenos Aires. At the same time, the brand adopted more modern methods and the company diversified and increased its production significantly to enable it to respond to this international craze and to expand. Accustomed to being constantly in fashion, San Pellegrino invested in the visual arts and design and linked its name to the Milan International Furniture Exhibition, a global benchmark in the sector. In 2006, the brand combined with Fratelli Guzzini (www.fratelliguzzini.it) to sponsor the exhibition, WWW Wonderful Water World, the new values of water, which hosted the work of the best Italian designers, focused on the theme of water.

The show business and cinema environment was naturally one of San Pellegrino’s favourite domains. Numerous directors featured the famous green bottles in their films, as a symbol of Italian sophistication and elegance: Woody Allen in The Goddess of Love, Billy Wilder in Sabrina and more recently in The Devil wears Prada - to the extent that San Pellegrino’s nickname is the “Show Business water”. Of course the brand could not avoid featuring in a variety of gastronomic events. It approached the ALMA (International School of Italian Cookery), set up and run by the Chef, Gualtiero Marchesi (www.marchesi.it), to promote both the art of Italian gastronomy throughout the

San Pellegrino Cooking Cup Every year experienced navigators confront each other in the Bay of Venice; on each boat Chefs busy themselves at their ovens to prepare a gastronomic meal. The winner of the 2006 event was the Gecko team from the Compagnia della Vela yacht club, one of the oldest yachting clubs in Italy. This year the 2007 Cup will be held from 30 June to 1 July 2007.

A Passion for Pumpkin For the first time, Ligne Roset is producing a collection of sofas, armchairs and footstools directly inspired by those that furnished the “salon aux tableaux” of the Elysée Palace between 1971 and 1974. The original architect of the collection, Pierre Paulin, is the French master of design whose innovative influence in the sphere of furniture extends to designers the world over.
>>> As its name suggests, Pumpkin, which was nominated for the Interior Award Cologne 2008, is evocative of a giant pumpkin, welcoming the user with its protectively voluptuous (and voluptuously protective) shell. Seating was effectively liberated by treating each piece as a unique volume, more or less sculpted from foam and not necessarily resting on four feet. This untraditional approach brought extraordinary freedom in terms of form, liberating seating as it did from standard methods of assembly and orthogonal lines.With Pierre Paulin, it was finally the seat which adapted to the body and not the other way around. With a fully removable cover, zipped in placed at the junction of seat and back and Velcroed to the thermoformed base, the Pumpkin is a monocolour model which can be made up in either fabric or hide. Paulin’s foam and stretchy fabric creations
of the 1960s – from the Mushroom armchair (1960) to the ABCD sofa (1968) – have become mythical icons amongst the design community. These creations undeniably paved the way for the overwhelming success of Ligne Roset in the 1970s, when the all-foam Togo, designed by Michel Ducaroy in 1973, became an icon which still figures amongst the brand’s best-selling models today.

Debuts in Bahrain
A year after the unveiling of the GranTurismo, Maserati is back at the EuroMotors Showroom in Sitra with the GranTurismo S.
>>> “Last year, Euro Motors launched the GranTurismo to Bahrain. The response and demand we received was phenomenal, and we have extremely high expectations for Maserati’s new offering - the GranTurismo S,” said Paul Yates, EuroMotors General Manager. The compact and lightweight 4.7-liter V8 engine develops maximum power output of 440HP at 7,000rpm and peak torque of 490Nm at 4,750rpm, and ensures high specific power output and more torque at lower speeds without affecting the capacity to increase the revs quickly, typical of racing engines. An electro-actuated 6-speed gearbox is paired with the 4.7 liter V8 engine and has MC-Shift software, which harnesses the new engine’s power output, ensuring new unbeatable gearshift performance in terms of the whole sports car range. The gearshift solution, known as MC-Shift, is the most important innovation of the electro-actuated system on the Maserati GranTurismo S: this includes management software and special hardware components which give top performance in terms of gearshift times. At the wheel, the Maserati GranTurismo S is more rigid and compact, thanks to the suspension layout developed specifically to support the new weight distribution. Vehicle roll has been reduced significantly as a result of the modified springs, bars and dampers. On the outside, the Maserati GranTurismo S is distinguished by a number of aesthetic modifications, which serve to make the car body appear even sportier without abandoning the sleekness of the lines masterfully designed by Pininfarina.
The Maserati GranTurismo S boasts new specially designed 20-inch rims, which resemble the Trident, Maserati’s symbol. The sporty look is complemented by the generously proportioned oval-section exhaust tailpipes. The radiator grille and headlight casings are black, while the Trident on the grille and the oval badge below the hood are embossed in red, in true Maserati racing tradition. The interior, upholstered in Poltrona Frau leather and Alcantara (used for the steering wheel and centre of the seat with the option to extend to the whole of the headlining), reflects the sporty flair of the Maserati GranTurismo S. The front and rear seats are distinguished by their new dynamic design with horizontal piping on the seats and seatbacks.

British Airways Soars to New Heights of Delights British Airways (BA) has launched a new “Taste Team,” which creates menus, focusing on seasonality, provenance, quality and Britishness.

This will help to build up “food tourism” recommendations from the best food halls to the top local street food.

The centre features a number of contemporary art galleries, an openair amphitheatre, an exquisite fine-dining restaurant, an exclusive spa and a state-of-the-art Pilates and dance studio, the first of its kind in the Gulf region.

Architecture Restoration and refurbishment of the property consists of two phases: the restoration of the principal building and the addition of six new buildings within the old edifice. The centre preserves the four main features of fine Gulf Islamic architecture - the wind tower, the double enclosure, the timber louvers at the balconies and the portico. A well balanced architectural design makes the Alireza house known for being the most advanced traditional building in the Gulf. The masterwork is based on the vision of angles, textures, materiality and proportions of round and geometric volumes. The invisible energy according to the light and the hand made coloration of each square meter of wall space generate a feeling of harmony as the water flows from the 26-tonne, handmade fountain. Work exceeded 3.6 million manhours and over US$5.2 million in private investment.

Hermès in Bahrain
Hermès has a new home in Bahrain. Housed in the new tower complex of the Bahrain World Trade Center, the store, located on the ground floor, is open on three sides and finished with slender silk-screened golden stripes. >>> With the glass panels supported by “spider system” metallic arms, the facade appears weightless, and the polished mirror finish of these stainless steel fixtures gives it lightness and character. The silk-screened, metallic structure gives way to the grand windows, which seem to float within the wall. Bathed in light, the 201-square-metre store, designed by RDAI, the Parisian architectural agency led by Rena Dumas, is an expression of clarity, discretion, and lightness. Its unique front entrance reveals the exlibris in a mosaic of off-white and grey set with dark yellow cabochons subtly echoing the gold of the facade. In the centre, a suspended mezzanine volume housing the offices creates a sensation of gravity. Positioned beneath this volume are glass presentation cabinets, dedicated to jewellery, watches, small leather goods, and silk scarves. White stucco freestanding panels increase the feeling of lightness and give the central architectural structure an ethereal dimension. At the back and on either side of the mezzanine lie the men’s and women’s ready-to-wear collections. Their respective areas are delimited by a large grey carpet, and are separated by voluminous changing rooms encircled by mirrors. The double-height ceiling at the perimeter of the mezzanine is highlighted by a frieze of Greek meanders and moulded glass globes designed especially for Hermès in 1925. The mirror and glass surfaces, Marmorino stucco finishes, and white or beige tones create a feeling of purity that radiates throughout the store. Cherry wood shelves punctuate this space of luxurious whiteness, protected from inquisitive eyes by golden casing. In this warm and welcoming ambiance, the memory of Hermès is present and alive and expressed in tangible modernity.

An Evening of Design and Fashion at RUW Fashion design students at The Royal University for Women showcased their creations during its third annual Art and Design Exhibition. The event draws more than 100 guests, including officials from the Bahrain National Museum as well as the Ministry of Information, media representatives and local artists. The collection reflects a variety of unique and colourful garments, from traditional-inspired clothing to dresses created with unusual materials, such as paper clips, pebbles and rubber mats. The exhibition also features the work of Graphic Design and Interior Design students, who designed and displayed a fully furnished exhibition hall, The Exhibition Hall, taking into consideration proper lighting and layout to display artworks in the most ideal setting.

The Masterpieces of Juan dela Cruz Filipino art pieces went on display in a two-day exhibition titled, â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Masterpieces of Juan dela Cruz,â&#x20AC;? at the Al Murjan Ballroom in Movenpick Hotel. The exhibition showcases the works of Filipino painters, digital artists, sculptors and photographers based in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia. The exhibition pays tribute to Juan dela Cruz, a composite image of every Filipino anywhere in the globe. The event, which promotes the richness of the Filipino culture and heritage, also features entertainment from Filipino musicians, dancers, fashion designers, poets and orators. Proceeds of the exhibition, organised by the Bahrain-based Phenomena Productions, which operates under the Philippine Embassy, have been earmarked for donation to the Rehabilitation Institute for Active Learning Centre and the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration of the Philippines.

Where do you work and what is your job title? I wear many hats, but I am also the Director for Public Relations for the YK Almoayyed Group. What does your job involve? I make sure YK Almoayyed has established a good communications platform and uses it to foster a healthy working environment for our employees and to spread the word about the community outreach projects we are carrying out as a corporate citizen of Bahrain. I have recently taken the lead to revamp the contents of our company newsletter, giving it a fresh look with a new contemporary design. I also get consulted on creating important marketing materials for the company. Can you take us through a typical working day? I do not necessarily report to the office every day. Besides, I have other things to do. You know, in a family there is almost always one who is an exception. I can say I am an exception in the Almoayyed family. My family is very much into business. I love doing business as well but at my own pace and probably not on a grand scale, since I want to pursue other things, such as art and writing. I start my day by reading. I read all the time. As an author, I need a constant infusion of new ideas. I have already written four books and I am hoping I can teach people, particularly the young people in Bahrain, the value of responsibility and productivity through my writings. The first book I wrote was a tribute to my father. The other three books are about raising children. If child-rearing is done right, I strongly believe we
will have a whole new generation of responsible Bahraini youths. How do you balance business and family life? My children are already grown-up and I care about other things now. There are certain social issues that are particularly close to my heart. For instance, I have been part of a movement that campaigns for a law for the family, including other measures to prevent and punish violence against women, especially domestic violence. What do you do to relax? I do Yoga and exercise daily. But I find reading the Quran most relaxing. I feel like rediscovering my sense of purpose again as a human being each time I read the Quran. Do you have any hobbies or a particular passion outside of work? I paint and I write. Additionally, I am passionate about issues plaguing our youths today, particularly alcoholism, drug addiction and child abuse. If you look around, much of the investment is poured heavily into infrastructure projects - buildings that glitter, move, and stand tallest in the world. There is hardly any investment for the education of the youth. I feel that someone has to step in the gap, and I am doing exactly that. I am also saddened how some people have the mistaken view that building mosques is more honourable than, say, building shelters for abused children. From my understanding of the Quran, I believe these efforts are both honourable.

What books are you currently reading? Now, I am reading a novel and religious and psychology books. One particular book I currently read with interest is one that provides a how-to guide to start a magazine. I have not made up my mind about publishing a magazine, but it is certainly one of the business ideas that I am very interested to pursue in the future. I am thinking of a magazine along the lines of O, The Oprah Magazine. What is your favourite holiday destination? I was in Paris in July for 17 days and I found so much to like about the place. The city is very clean and its art and beauty are matched only by its cultural riches. Its art and architecture, from the Gothic magnificence of Notre Dame with its renowned stained glass, to the engineering marvel of the Eiffel Tower, explain why Paris is one of the worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s most-visited destinations. I also like Turkey. The country is clean and offers a breathtaking natural view. Importantly, the Turkish people are also really nice. If you could be anyone else for a day, who would you be? That kind of a hypothetical scenario has never ever crossed my mind one bit. However, on second thought, I probably would like to try to be in the shoes of Oprah Winfrey. I like the fact that she has a television programme that she uses as a platform to touch the lives of other people and that she is using her strong influence with other people in a positive way. She touches on a problem and tries to be a conduit for bringing a solution to a particular problem. What characteristics do you find most appealing in other people? Honesty. That is really one virtue I want to see in people. What is your favourite type of food? Fish. However it is cooked, I like fish. Tell us one thing that people might be surprised to learn about you. People might be surprised to know I consider myself more of an artist than a business person. I have been writing since 1972, when I was at the Ministry of Information. I also paint, using oil and water colour. I have 50 paintings and four books so far.

Dubai Fashion Week, which will showcase seasonal collections from leading and emerging designers from the region for the Spring/ Summer 2009 edition, will take place from the 5th – 9th October 2008 at the Godolphin Ball Room in Jumeirah Emirates Towers. The Spring/ Summer 2009 edition will be the fourth seasonal installment of Dubai Fashion Week, which aims to establish Dubai’s position in the global fashion industry and promote the regional fashion design industry. Leading and emerging designers will be represented and the collections will range from bridge/couture to prêt à porter. “Dubai Fashion Week is quickly gaining the reputation as one of the most important and must attend fashion trade events on the region’s fashion calendar, not only for buyers but also for stylists and all industry insiders. Middle East International Film Festival, Abu Dhabi 10th - 19th October 2008
MEIFF, held in Abu Dhabi, is an annual event and a project of the Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage (ADACH). The festival is a cultural event dedicated to bringing a diverse slate of international films and programs to the community and introducing filmmakers from around the world to the resources of the region. Held from October 10th - 19th 2008, the festival includes Gala events and screenings at the prestigious Emirates Palace. This year the organizers of the Middle East International Film Festival (MEIFF), in collaboration with Shawati magazine, are also giving artists and designers the chance to submit their artwork for the opportunity to have their design become the next official MEIFF Poster. The competition was announced earlier this year at the MEIFF press conference held at the Cannes International Film Festival. Just as MEIFF highlights the talents of filmmakers and actors from around the world, the Poster Design Competition was created to offer talented artists and artists the opportunity to become involved in the festival in a way other than film. The theme of the poster is simple - it should reflect the mission statement of MEIFF and have the black pearl, the symbol of the festival, incorporated as a main element in the poster and any graphic, photographic or calligraphic elements can be used to highlight the national identity of the UAE and the culture in the region.

17th - 21st November 2008 Artparis Abu Dhabi is returning with an impressive panorama of modern and contemporary art in a variety of media, ranging from painting to sculpture to photography. From November 17th to 21st 2008, Artparis promises to present a broad panorama of the artistic creations of the 20th and 21st centuries. With the support of the authorities in charge of culture and patrimony (ADACH), the art fair plays an active role in the cultural activities of Abu Dhabi. The fair’s official inauguration will take place on Monday, November 17th in the presence of his Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Crown Prince of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. On the grounds of Emirates Palace, 57 galleries will exhibit more than 3,300 works of art, with
more than 700 artists showcased, including Kader Attia, Paul Cézanne, Shilpa Chavan, Jim Dine, Bernard Frize, Alberto Giacometti, Damien Hirst, Henri Matisse, Shirin Neshat, Julian Opie, Yazid Oulab, Pablo Picasso, Thomas Ruff, Faisal Samra, Niki de Saint Phalle, Massimo Vitali and Andy Warhol, amongst others. The Doha International Book Fair, held at the Qatar International Exhibition Center, is one of the biggest book fairs in the region. Hosted by the Qatari National Council for Art, Culture and Heritage, the fair is attended by thousands of people from all walks of life, including special trips for various schools in which hundreds of children take part. Around 98,000 books were on display at the last edition of this fair, the majority of which were in Arabic, with about 17,000 books in other languages.
Islamic art is characterized by the secular art produced under Islamic influences. Although an art unified in style and purpose, it is often marked by strong regional characteristics as well as by significant influence from other cultures, given the vast geographic and temporal boundaries, with Calligraphy often playing the most important role in this highly dynamic and deeply rooted art. Treasures of Islamic Art will show pieces of art, meticulously selected, as woven textiles and carpets, illuminated and delicate manuscripts, inlaid metalwork, blown glass, glazed ceramics, carved wood, carefully embellished furniture and calligraphic panels. Ranging in date from the 12th through to the 20th century, this special and unique Exhibition, at Souq Waqif, will bring masterpieces of some important Islamic Art collectors from the Arab World, as well as state-of-the-art pieces from Doha itself.

Dolphin Watching Bahrain has only recently added dolphin watching to its water-sports activities, which already include windsurfing, waterskiing, jet-skiing, parasailing, diving and snorkeling. Dolphins have always been a relatively common sight in the Arabian Gulf. Island Tours (17 294-439) provides three boat trips daily except Sunday, leaving from the Marina Club in the heart of Manama. Dolphin-watching trips leave at 10am, 12 noon and 2pm, lasting for about one-and-a-half hours. The charge is BD10 for adults and BD5 for children.
Horseback Riding Bahrain shares a love for all things equestrian with other Middle Eastern countries. For the Arab world, horse riding has always been a passion, and Bahrain is certainly no exception. Horseback riding is a wellliked sport in Bahrain, where horse races are also held. The horse racing season usually runs from October to March, when the weather is cooler. There are stables with mounts for all ages and abilities in Bahrain. At Awali Riding Club (17 756-525), horseback riding is assisted by a professionally qualified instructor and usually starts at 6pm. A half-hour ride around the Awali area will cost BD4 for non-members.

Adventure Drive Arabia
Oil Museum
Located at the Bahrain International Circuit, Adventure Drive Arabia (ADA) is a unique, state-of-theart, off-road 4Ă&#x2014;4 attraction; it is the Gulfâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s first purpose built, dedicated off-road four-wheel driving centre. ADA boasts a dramatic off-road course built into the desert landscape and comprises some 30 demanding obstacles.
Bahrain was the first country to discover oil in the Gulf region. To commemorate the 60th anniversary of the discovery of oil in Bahrain, the Oil Museum was opened in 1992. Located near the first oil well discovered in Sakhir, the museum houses old drilling equipment, samples of rocks found underground, topographical maps, some information about the companies that had participated in the exploration for oil, and a working model of an oil rig.

Bahrain After Dark Bahrain has many pubs, night clubs and other nightlife party places. Live bands are a regular feature at many nightclubs, and the choice of music is quite varied, such as Ethiopian, Arabic, Indian and Western. Most nightspots are inside hotels. The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain Hotel & Spa, for example, is home to Trader Vic’s, a bar, lounge and restaurant. On the other side of town is Sherlock Holmes, one of Bahrain’s oldest watering holes, in Gulf Hotel. Bahrain’s nightlife draws many party-goers from around the neighbouring GCC states each week.
Recreational Pearl Diving A few companies in Bahrain provide recreational deep-sea pearl diving accompanied by professionally qualified divers. For instance, Scuba Master (17 292-154) allows divers to collect oyster shells and to keep the pearls they might find. Until mid-1932, when oil was discovered in Bahrain, the deep-sea pearl was providing lustre to its economy, employing thousands of people and spawning a flourishing retail trade. Bahrain’s natural pearls are considered the finest in the world, exuding a special lustre and an exquisite range of colours. Many often attribute the Bahrain state flag’s red and pearl-white to the propensity of the old merchants to display their pearls on ruby-red cloths to highlight their beauty. The pearling industry was dealt a crushing blow, when cheaper Japanese cultured pearls began to saturate the market.
