New year, new wardrobe. Isn’t that how the saying goes? Well, this season there is very little ambiguity over fashion’s message; it’s all about doing you. And our issue celebrates the very people doing just that - the ones eschewing the obvious for a bit of individual flair. Biding farewell to the very king of selfexpression himself, Sophie Jones Cooper pays tribute to David Bowie in her monthly column; a final salute to the Starman who bent all the rules and did so one star-
Yes, these are exciting times with fresh young blood who know cool and more importantly, know what people really want to wear. You might not recognise their names, but our list page 45 will give you the lowdown on who to invest in right now. Speaking of no rules, few places can compare to Los Angeles, a place where anyone can come to write their own storyline. And it is in the very heart of Lalaland where stylist and fashion editor Julie Matos found the perfect backdrop for this issue’s fashion story, Retro Revival. Find out how to walk this season’s fine line between unabashedly retro and eccentric chic with printed separates, character accessories and the funkiest vintage dresses.
spangled alter-ego at a time. Stripping something back to the essentials seems especially fitting now, and a look at the spring 16 collections is proof enough. Trends like Normcore have dominated for so long, that the desire to stand out rather than fit in has struck a collective chord with designers. In truth, it’s more of a feeling than a trend; a very distinct move towards a new way of dressing, where you dress according to what your gut tells you and not because everyone else does. Confused? Our style report on page 56 will sort that out, introducing the new season pieces that you the individual will love.
But remember channel YOU. After all, spring’s most appealing piece is its most relatable - and that’s individuality. As the late David Bowie put it, “All my big mistakes are when I try to second-guess or please an audience. My work is always stronger when I get very selfish about it.”
And like the no-rules, no-holds-barred direction fashion is taking, it’s seems only fitting to experiment with some of the industry’s lesser known talents.

“Today, style reinvention is part and parcel of popular culture and is by no means radical or daring. THE FASHION LIVES ON David Bowie circa 1973
SLT salutes David Bowie and his boundary-pushing glittering styles and extreme personas that have shifted popular culture and fashion Words: Sophie Jones-Cooper
T
oday, style reinvention is part and parcel of popular culture and is by no means radical or daring. Lady Gaga wears a raw meat dress, whatever… But flashback 50 years, and there was one man who can only be described as radical and daring, a chameleon and the King of selfexpression, innovation and reinvention – Mr. David Bowie. It is in fact his groundbreaking and avant-garde guises that have inspired today’s 21st century fashion pack of flamboyant dressers. David Bowie was not born with flame red hair and a sequined second skin, instead a passion for self-expression, and he soon realised that clothes could be his means of expression. At school he reportedly started a trend for tapered trousers and dyed his hair red with food colouring. He then went on to adopt a hippy mod style all throughout the 60s. Up until 1972, David flirted with a more feminine style of trousers and blouses, maxi dresses and flowing locks, but it was really only in 1972 that David’s genius was noted with the birth of his first persona Ziggy Stardust. “Offstage I'm a robot. Onstage I achieve emotion. It's probably why I prefer dressing up as Ziggy to being David,” he once said.
collection and Miu Miu updated the ice-blue Freddie Burretti designed trouser suits from the 1972 ‘Life on Mars?’ video, with her FW12 collection. Long standing friend and fan Kate Moss also collected Bowie’s 2014 Brit Award dressed in the iconic playsuit he wore at his last performance as Ziggy Stardust.
This iconic style, a skinny androgynous waif of a man, topped with a mass of orange-red hair and bedecked in striped jumpsuits and kneehigh boots reached out to millions. Inspired by an assortment of cultural references, this Bowie era went on to transform the fashion industry. His 1972 skin tight cat suit style inspired a Bowie themed FW11 Balmain collection, the one legged knitted cat suit he wore on Top of the Pops inspired Jean Paul Gaultier’s SS13
In 1973, David held a soiree to bid farewell to Ziggy Stardust, giving rise to a new persona – Aladdin Sane. Fantasy dressing was taken to new heights with a lightning bolt representing the duality of the mind and a cat suit for every mood, including the iconic semi-orbular legged masterpiece designed by Kansai Yamamoto. Sane mania was infiltrating the world and continued to do so many years after, inspiring two Kate Moss Vogue covers.
36
. sur la terre . news .
Another new visual persona emerged in 1976, this time it was the turn of Thin White Duke, dubbed by Bowie as a “nasty ogre”. He was a troubled alter ego black on the inside, black and white suited on the outside. After this, Bowie’s style took a more subdued, pared down appearance and by the late 70s and early 80s he adopted slick suits followed by a new romantic mood throughout the majority of the 80s. In 1997, the iconic Union Jack coat designed by a young Alexander McQueen in collaboration with Bowie was to become one of his final iconic masterpieces. Over his five-decade career, David Bowie wowed the world as a cultural phenomenon and will always be remembered as a true avant-garde, agent of glam-rock, who shaped and defined our world forever.

As 2016 begins with a kick, we highlight the upcoming talent that promise to make it big. Here is who to invest in right now!…
Mari Giudicelli You might not recognise the name straight away but a look at this pretty face and you’re bound to remember her from one of the countless campaigns she has fronted. Yes, the native Brazilian and new New Yorker has been the muse to some of fashion’s favourite brands, from Mansur Gavriel to Simon Porte Jacquemus, and now is putting modeling on the back burner as she tries her talented hands at design with the debut of her eponymous luxury shoe line. “I wanted to create classic, comfortable footwear for women with busy lifestyles. They are all hand made in Brazil with very special leathers and carved wood low heels,” says Giudicelli. Question is will you love them? If her ineffable cool style is anything to go by, then answer is: without a doubt! www.marigiudicelli.com

Jacquemus shaking things up is new kid on the block Simon Porte Jacquemus who (with a small group of young and up coming designers) is giving big brands a run, not for their money, but for the industry’s attention. The talented Frenchie has already got himself a cult following for his cut-and-paste approach to women’s pieces, which he constructs from mannish staples like suits and shirting. From Jacquemus’ (a nod to his mother's maiden name) signature asymmetric cuts to his use of brave tones and futuristic shapes, this is one label proving that there are plenty of reasons to stand out! www.jacquemus.com
Vetement s They had has us all pinning behind those jeans without even knowing anything about the brand. That’s how good brothers Demna and Guram Gvasalia and their collective of friends are. They know cool and more importantly, they know what people really want to wear. There’s no faking it with these boys who have proved over the past few seasons that looking like yourself is the hottest trend out there. If you don't already know Vetements, get to know them fast! www.vetementswebsite.com

Edward Crutchley
He’s cut his teeth at Vuitton, worked with Kanye West and just recently launched his own label; textile design consultant Edward Crutchley has definitely built himself one serious resume. A dedicated disciple of his alma mater, Central Saint Martins' “research, research, research” philosophy, his rethinking of fabrics and materials have resulted in one of the year’s most buzzedabout menswear collections. www.edwardcrutchley.com
Gosha Rubchinskiy
He’s the kid from Moscow that everyone is plying for. The one that managed to get Rei Kawakubo, mastermind behind the Comme des Garçons empire, to make a rare front row appearance at his Fall 2016 menswear show. Heavily inspired by skateboarding and the youth culture of his home country, the Russian wunderkind is proving to be the name to beat in next-level street style, as his boxy cuts, bizarre colour schemes and cyrillic typography make for awkward success. www.gosharubchinskiy.com
Martiniano
It seems that fashion’s love affair with the ugly shoe is not over yet as a crop of glove-inspired, elasticated leather slips ons take over from last season’s army of Birkenstock wannabes. And if you, just like us, are easily swayed by anything hot and buzzworthy then Martiniano is the man to turn to for these minimalist numbers. The Argentinean label, founded by pop star Martiniano Lopez Crozet (who headed one half of Los Super Elegantes) is all about flexible, wearable slippers and flats created using handmade techniques and fine Italian leather in Buenos Aires. www.mnzstore.com

Sanayai 313
Born out of a Turkish concept store (think fashion, interiors and design all under one stylish oriental roof), this new line of shoes and bags is the perfect embodiment of founders and brothers Enis and Amir’s aesthetic and philosophy. A blend of traditional Ottoman weaving and Italian shoe making knowledge, Sanayi 313 takes traditional craftsmanship and combines it with a modern twist. The result? A stunning collection of hand-woven, pompom totting, raffia inspired pieces that’ll probably sell out in no time; we suggest checking out Matchesfashion.com now! www.sanayi313.com

L ocal talent
I HAVE BEEN PRIVILEGED TO BE...… part of an endless world of beautiful creativity and craftsmanship. As my journey progressed, I became a cobbler, a researcher, an artist and a designer. I worked with artisans in the smallest of workshops, was taught by masters of the industry and visited every type of factory, tannery and producer that I could. I became addicted to knowing more, and the more I knew the more I wanted to design an honest product of excellent quality that will tell a story and age beautifully.
I’M FASCINATED BY... … Martin Margiela’s journey in deconstructing fashion. I admire Yohji Yamamoto’s rebellious yet cool attitude towards design that is reflected so amazingly in his pieces. And Riccardo Tisci, I just love how he makes haute couture look so cool and relatable.
MY SOURCE OF INSPIRATION...… was initially drawn from Fariuz and Marina Abramovic and everything between their two worlds. I created a link between their modes of expression, hunger for home and confronting limits they address in their art. The result is the beginning of a journey that has created a label representing a modern, active and confident individual.

I LOVE HIGH HEELS...… but I do prefer flats for sure. I feel more comfortable in them, and finding the perfect pair means I can wear them day and night. www.ranacheikha.com

HANDS ON He might have been late joining the watch game, but Richard Mille has proved that slow and steady really does win the race!
“I have always said that we have one foot in the 19th century and the other in the 21st. Although my watches are finished by hand, we use very modern materials. Our techniques have been pushed to the limit and sometimes over the limit, and that people understand and appreciate. We are no longer a niche brand. But a general brand filling a niche need. My motto has always been to make watches to live in, not ones to put in the safe.” - Richard Mille, Founder
toys for boys Defined by its very spirit of innovation, Richard Mille has always been a fan favourite at SIHH, and this year was no different with the brand introducing three new spectacular additions: Limited to 30 pieces the RM50-02, born out of a partnership with Airbus Corporate Jets, is modern and bold, fitted with a brand-new movement and a case that is made of Titanium-Aluminum, the same highly stress-resistant alloy used by Airbus for its jet turbine blades Self-winding, 50 hours’ power reserve and a tonneau case made availablefor the first time in a an ultra flat format, the new RM6701 is a work of art.
“Every time I meet a potential client come to buy a Richard Mille watch I warn them and say be careful, because once you are in it you are finished!” - Richard Mille, Founder
An extraordinarily delicate operation, the making of Richard Mille timepieces is brought together by hand-picked specialists and experts who work in harmony, united by their quest to constantly innovate the very concept of wearable timepieces.
Always one full of surprises, Richard Mille’s last addition wasn't a watch at all but a fountain pen aptly named the RMS05. Housed in multilayered NTPT Carbon the brand is writing a new chapter with this fabulous gentlemanly accessory. www.richardmille.com
“Since 2010, my wrist hasn't seen a different watch. With Richard Mille you get a simple watch and what makes it different than others and so special is the way that it was made.” - Rafael Nadal, Richard Mille Brand Ambassador
“My watch is beautiful. It’s an extreme watch made to resist all the extreme movement that a professional athlete like myself exerts on the tennis court. After all, the most important thing for someone like me is to be 100 per cent comfortable, and feel like I am wearing nothing. And that’s what I get with Richard Mille’s watches.”- Rafael Nadal, Richard Mille Brand Ambassador

After the tragic death of her first love, Coco Chanel left Paris following her friend to Venice where she fell in love once again, but this time with an enchanting city. Venice and its palaces, canals, narrow streets, museums and relics of the Byzantine Empire charmed Chanel, but most importantly it was the Lion of St. Mark who captured her heart. This gilded statue of a winged lion, a protective figure, and an emblem of the city’s glory and courage on the Basilica of St. Mark’s façade intrigued Chanel so intensely, that from that day forward the lion became a symbol that resonated within her soul and her work for the rest of her life and beyond. Her apartment in Rue Cambon, Paris is adorned with lion masterpieces and the lion emblazoned on many of her creations – from buttons adorning suits to clasps of handbags and fine jewellery. Even long after her death, when the statue was due for renovation, the House of Chanel stepped in and enlisted the help of two teams to undergo a complete restoration of the original Lion of St. Mark and the mosaic behind it. Once again this Venetian masterpiece can now reign over its city, a city which Mademoiselle Chanel, a Leo herself, so vehemently adored. www.chanel.com

SOLE HOUR How the Reverso got a stylish tribute
How does Jaeger-LeCoultre celebrate the 85th anniversary of its signature swiveling timepiece? With a celebrity designer collaboration of course! The brand, which pulled out a fully refreshed line of its iconic Reverso wristwatch at this year’s SIHH, teamed up with master shoe designer Christian Louboutin to further amp up the look and aesthetic of its famed collection. Guided by his wild imagination, the French designer played around with the maison’s classical design codes adding elements of vibrant colours and pretty textures - all cheekily hinting at his iconic soles - perfectly combining them with the technical supremacy of the Reverso movements and beautiful rectangular Art Deco case. With a variety of combinations in seven dials and seven watchbands, we know we’ll never have to run late again, especially in our skyscraper Loubis. Thank God for that! www.jaeger-lecoultre.com

COCKTAIL O’CLOCK David webb has us all rushing off to happy hour “David Webb has always been a pinnacle of sophisticated style but it isn’t shy or demure. Our cocktail rings, for example, are declarative and bold, utilising the best materials available with bold colour and sumptuous yellow gold,” says Mark Emanuel, coowner of David Webb. “Our jewellery is distinctive and looks best on the stylishly dressed; one who is not afraid to take risks and make a statement.” Their recipe for sucess is actually quite a simple one, and that is to follow in the footsteps of the brand’s founder David Webb himself; a man whose fiercely imaginative mind has captured both socialites and Hollywood with his bold use of colour, dimension and meticulous attention to detail. His original renderings, till this day, remain the foundation of the company and his cocktail rings remain a brand favourite. How to wear them? Large, eccentric and often featuring imposing stones as well as an animal theme, these daring conversation pieces look just great standing alone. www.davidwebb.com

the iconi big pilot's watch gets new wings It seems that each year IWC introduces a massive undertaking, revamping and refreshing of its most popular lines and this year it’s the famous Pilot Watch collection that got a bit of TLC. Bridging the gap between tradition and contemporary elegance, the Swiss luxury watch manufacturer unveiled a flood of novelty watches for its most beloved timepiece, adding 17 new members to the Pilot's watch collection as well as two new limited edition models: the Big Pilot's Heritage Watch 55 and the Big Pilot's Heritage Watch 48. And as Georges Kern, CEO of IWC so elegantly put it, there’s definitely something for everyone: “With the sheer choice of models in the Pilot’s Watch collection we’re also appealing to watch lovers who have until now dismissed the idea of an IWC watch.” www.iwc.com

Cartier drives home its iconic design codes in the Drive de Cartier Finally it is here, the watch all Cartier male fans have been waiting for. Don’t get us wrong, the brand has a host of pretty men’s watches but nothing has hit the nail on the head like the Drive de Cartier has. Beautiful, refined and masculine, the collection ticks all the design codes associated with Cartier: Roman numerals, guilloché inner dial, railroad chapter ring, highly defined proportions and an element of fine watchmaking mechanics. Aside from the date window that will have some people whining about, Cartier has managed to create a handsome piece, which is slowly proving to be the most attractive new men's watch to come from the brand in years. A job well done we must say! www.cartier.com

covet it Mrporter.com Deputy Style Director Olie Arnold shares his summer essentials

Common Projects sneakers (1) are the ultimate in pared-back luxury. In ecru leather, this pair has a distinct lack of obvious branding and exudes the 2
simple elegance that works well in the summer. Wear them with soft tailoring or a pair of shorts. Whilst I am a fan of a simple white t-shirt I do think summer allows men to be a bit more adventurous with print and colour. This printed tee by Acne Studios (2) would work well with chinos or shorts, and I would advise keep the rest of your outfit pared down – one pop of print is more than enough. There is something incredibly chic about a white linen shirt (3). It can work well when teamed with denim cut-offs or a pair of Orlebar Brown swim-shorts and is an item that works for a man of any age. It must also be said that it is the

perfect piece to enhance a summer tan. Tom Ford really is the master of luxurious craftsmanship and his sunglasses (4) are certainly worth the investment. This style is made in Italy and feature black acetate frames and a polished rose-gold bridge. The dark-blue lenses offer 100% UV protection so are safe and stylish even in intense

sunlight. I think most men are happy to wear brighter colours in the summer, and pastel tones 5
work well against tanned skin. These Incotex shorts (5) may be pastel pink but they work really well with a simple white tee and white sneakers. An added plus is that they work well for a day on the beach as they do for an evening on the town. www.mrporter.com

A CLASSIC REVIVED
Could this old-school sneaker be the It shoe for spring? As the normcore trend will have it, we are all still sneaker obsessed. Whether we want to admit it or not, a quick look into closets last year is proof enough that the comfort bug has bitten the style savvy crowd, and hard. And it seems that for 2016, big brands plan on carrying over that very torch with some of them turning to reinventing some old time favourite classics. Enter Reebok and the Club C 85 Vintage, the popular ’80s model now available in two modern upgraded variations. With an exterior closely mimicking that of the original, the new sneakers look like just the thing our wardrobe needs for spring. The shoes are balanced by a high abrasion rubber outsole for extra traction, and come in a clean allover “chalk” colourway, with one version embracing green accents just on the logo, while the other keeps it clean with hints of navy in the terry lining and outer sole.

HOW DIGITALLY ACTIVE ARE YOU DAILY? I am very active. I post about 3-5 times a day on Instagram and am constantly updating my blog (www. mrmoudz.com), I also snapchat like it’s my last day on earth.
WHAT ELECTRONIC DEVICE CAN’T YOU LIVE WITHOUT? That would definitely have to be my Vertu. It is a big part of my daily life. I’m a sucker for their concierge service.
DO YOU EVER UNPLUG? I do but not as much as I would like. I think a lot of people don’t fully grasp how demanding being a blogger, amongst other things, can be. It’s a lot of work and I am planning my first digital detox vacation where I will not have any connection to the world for a good 5 days.
SOCIAL MEDIA – LOVE IT OR HATE IT? I definitely love it as it has given me a platform in which I can reach a wide audience of people. It has allowed me to turn social media into a business for myself, and for that I am grateful.

as one of the cleanest vehicles in the world, the Prius has always been number one when it comes to environmental performance. But now Toyota has set its sights even further into the future, zooming in on 100 per cent zero emission vehicles with the launch of the new Mirai, a hydrogen fuel cell car. A culmination of years of research and prototypes, this is not only the Japanese automaker’s first mass-produced hydrogen fuel cell vehicle, but the world’s as well. And such a big step in the car world has everyone wondering what they will get? Well, according to Mirai chief engineer representative for the Middle East and North Africa Division Yoshikazu Tanaka, it's an innovation “even greater than that of the first-generation Prius” - a usable, capable four-door saloon powered by electricity that’s generated by reacting hydrogen and oxygen together in a fuel cell stack, a technology that Toyota has been developing in-house for automotive use since 1992. It has already proven it can go the distance, achieving 67 miles (108 KM) per gallon in official US combined city/highway driving calculations, and an estimated driving range of 312 miles (502 KM) on a single tank – a distance further than any other zeroemissions car on the market has achieved. With a unique exterior styling, the car’s high quality interior is arguably the most luxurious Toyota has outside the Lexus badge, already amassing an exceptional 1,500 orders in its first month on sale in Japan. “We thank our customers for their trust and continued patronage which further encourages us to create ever-better cars. At Toyota we always put our customer first and by uniting tradition with innovation we are constantly striving to develop next-generation vehicles. The Mirai is a result of this global vision of Toyota and has been well received by customers. With car buyers around the world becoming increasingly eco-conscious, we are confident that the Mirai will set a precedent for future vehicles that will redefine the auto industry,” Yoshitsugu said. The Mirai is definitely a symbol of cutting-edge innovation and environmental responsibility – a car that is light years ahead of its time.

SAN FRANCISCO If you fancy yourself as a bit of an eco-warrior especially when it comes to your food, then a drive up to Perennial in San Francisco is a must. The brainchild of Anthony Myint and Karen Leibowitz, the restaurant is the most ambitious and expensive project the couple has undertaken. Here, ‘farm-to-fork’ is taken to a whole new level with a firm ethos of ‘farm-to-fork-to fork’. On the menu you’ll find aquaponic entrees (to you and me that is waste food turned back into food by feeding it to their in-house worms, who feed the fish, who fertilise the water, which irrigates the soil and back into the aquaponic plants), as well as low-carbon beef and plans for perennial bread. www.theperennialsf.com
REYKJAVIK Don your Canada Goose jacket, Sorel boots and sense of adventure for a springtime jaunt to Iceland. Yes it is still cold in March; after all it is just two degrees south of the Arctic Circle. Don’t let a little cold weather put you off, and book yourself in at the new Canopy by Hilton hotel in Iceland’s capital Reykjavik, which opens early this year on the city’s prestigious Hverfisgata Street near the iconic architectural masterpiece the Harpa concert hall (don’t miss Don Giovanni by the Icelandic opera in March). As well as the hotel’s own rooftop bar and restaurant, Reykjavik is home to several Michelin starred restaurants and some seriously cool Nordic nightlife, as well as the island itself, one of the only countries from which to see the spectacular Aurora Borealis/Northern Lights. www.canopybyhilton.com
CHELTENHAM Fancy owning a Banksy with a difference? How about a genuine Banksy complete with a Grade II listed three-bedroom house thrown in for good measure? In the idyllic Cotswold town of Cheltenham in the UK the house that Banksy chose for the location of his ‘Spy Booth’ mural is now up for sale. And with a price tag of approximately $300,000, we all know a good bargain when we see one. But hurry; art aficionados have been known to splash out six-figure sums for Banksy pieces, so you can bet that this place will sell and fast!

PARIS It is hard to pin down the best part of Paris’ iconic Ritz hotel’s $270-million facelift, as come March, when the hotel of haute grandeur reopens, it will be more splendorous than ever before… First up is the new shopping gallery featuring Chanel, Cartier and Prada complete with a tunnel under Place Vendôme for discreet comings and goings, which means no need to even leave the hotel for a spot of retail therapy. Then there is the new Ritz Club incorporating the world’s very first Chanel spa for the epitome of luxe pampering and a neo-classical swimming pool. And did we mention the roof garden’s new retractable roof, which calls for year-round al fresco aperitifs. Santé. www.ritzparis.com
In the hotbed of hotel activity that is London’s Shoreditch, the much-anticipated wait for Nobu’s London Hotel is soon to be over. In a matter of weeks or most likely a few months (fingers crossed) guests will be able to sit down to chef Nobu Matsuhisa’s wondrous sushi creations at the hotel’s triple height restaurant as part of the five-storey, 156 room hotel and which will no doubt be the hotel’s haute hub for luxe purveyors from around the globe. We can’t wait for another winning Shoreditch combo - sushi, sake then sleep. www.nobuhotels.com
NEW YORK Lower Manhattan is quietly becoming quite the go-to style and culture hub of New York - the place to flaunt your finest and join the style-set at Brookfield Place (a fabulous food and fashion haunt) before a jolly in Tribeca. Hailed as ‘The New Downtown’, there is a new addition on the block for spring that is likely to lure in even more of the city’s cool crowd - The Beekman Hotel. The iconic building was one of the first high rises in the city and for spring 2016 has been revamped, welcoming guests back to its nine-storey atrium as well as dinner in its two new restaurants headed up by Tom Colicchio and Keith McNally. If you really fall in love with the place, you can also become a resident. But be warned; the private apartments start 172 feet up in the sky, so you better have a penchant for heights. www.thebeekman.com
LOS ANGELES If you’ve been eyeing up an LA based celebrity pad for throwing the odd party or two there is a new listing on the books that is about as iconic as they come – Hugh Hefner’s Playboy Mansion. But just because the Playboy magnate is selling his iconic residence, workplace and party pad, it doesn’t mean he is finding a new place to live. If you want to buy the Playboy Mansion, with its 6 acres, 22 bedrooms, game house, home theatre and famous swimming pool and ‘grotto’, it also comes complete with Hugh Hefner himself (and a zoo license!). As part of the sales agreement the mansion will continue to be Mr. Hefner’s residence and place of work. All yours, for just $300 million.

The curious resort spirit of this desert oasis has charmed the rich and famous from the early days of the 1900s. And now, with the San Jacinto Mountains as a backdrop, the once parched landscape and bare hills have slowly come to life with fine homes and iconic estates where the glamorous have set up base. It is in one of these iconic estates that Louis Vuitton chose to unveil its latest cruise collection. Designed by John Lautner in 1973, Bob Hope’s former ‘spaceship’ home painted the scene for the Ziggy Stardust looking models who blended in effortlessly with the radicalism of the house. And in the words of Michael Burke, chairman and chief executive of Louis Vuitton, it was “the perfect symbol of the American Dream and the energy of the American west coast.”

The Dior Cruise 2016 took over Pierre Cardin's futuristically fantastic Palais Bulle for a night the French Riviera will never forget.
Canne s
Ah the French riviera, France’s Mediterranean marvel. With its supercar lined streets and pristine yacht dotted waters, the small seaside town of Cannes has always been the playground of choice for the rich and famous. And what better place for Dior to launch their Cruise 2016 collection than at couturier Pierre Cardin’s summer home the Palais Bulle (Palace of Bubbles). The result? A whimsical show that mirrored the extravagant estate, and a reminder of Cannes’ inimitable style as a destination for luxury holidays.
EAT: If you enjoy gourmet food and don’t mind ogling at George Clooney over your oeufs at breakfast then Michelin-starred Palme D’Or warrants a reservation.
With the largest beach on La Croisette, Zplage at the iconic Hotel Martinez is where the stylish crowds can be found lazing under chic white parasols, getting their golden Mediterranean tan on.

Gucci Cruise 2016
From Brooklyn all the way to the Bowery, New York has more style per square inch than any other city in the world. Whether it’s fashion, food, design or fine arts, it is the centre of everything and anything Vogue. But it wasn’t the shiny and new that attracted Gucci’s Alessandro Michele to the city, but the grittier more historical side of NY instead. Set in a grey industrial warehouse somewhere on 22nd Street, the brand’s Cruise 16 collection took to the streets, proving that New York’s eclecticism was the missing component the uber-Italian brand needed to offset its vintageinspired art chic looks.

MUST-TRY: You can’t leave the Big Apple without having had a bite of its tastiest resident. The Cronut, a delicious hybrid of croissant and donut, has people lining up outside the Dominique Ansel Bakery as early as 5am to get their hands on this morning favourite.
STAY: Housed in a renovated factory, the Wythe Hotel has even the most hard core of Manhattanites crossing the bridge for its loftily apportioned rooms and King Kong skyline views.
DINE: With brunch arguably the most luxurious meal of the week, a Sunday stopover at Jack's Wife Freda on Lafayette is definitely a must. Just don't forget to get the rosewater waffles and green shakshuka; you’ll thank us later.

Shoes with Souls “What we do, how we do it and all the things we do, nobody else is capable of.” - Giuseppe Santoni, CEO of Santoni And it’s those exact words, combined with a sartorial passion for details and a rigorous “proudly made by hand” attitude, that give Santoni that distinction. After all, a bespoke pair of their double-buckle leather monks will set you back a cool $1,200. But then again, these aren't shoes you forget in the back of your closet, these are shoes you wear for life.

Opposite Page: The mood board and inspiration behind the SS16 collection; Three models inspired by Paloma Picasso.
The Story:
It has been said that the average woman owns 19 pairs of shoes. But what is it that makes her choose a pair to wear over and over again? The concept of uniqueness is something Santoni is quite familiar with. Born with the creation of the haut de gamme shoes laboratory by Andrea Santoni in 1975, it has been the driving force responsible for the pillars the brand has built its success on - tradition and innovation. What started 41 years ago as a small workshop at the back of Andrea’s garage has now become one of Italy’s most revered and respected names, with 500 employees and a turnover of more than 55 million Euros. “The aim of every single person working at Santoni, when they come to work in the morning, is how can we make a better shoe today? Not how can we make more shoes today or how can we make more profit. That’s not the aim of the company,” says Giuseppe of the ethos that has been passed down from his father to the rest of the Santoni family.

Collaboration:
A modern-day attitude married to an ancient know-how has created a recipe that has worked well for the Italian shoe makers. One that has garnered Santoni a roster of collaborations that reads like a who’s who of the luxury world; from Rubelli to IWC Schaffhausen (for watch straps) and Mercedes AMG (for a range of driving shoes). Today, in their ecosustainable factory, one that earned Santoni the prestigious Italian award Sistema d’autore METRA in the innovative technologies category in 2011, Giuseppe is taking the brand to new heights. And if the evolution of the company is anything to go by, then this is only just the beginning for the Made in Italy masters of soles. www.santonishoes.com v
Yes here at the brand’s headquarters in Marche, a region made famous for its shoe industry and the elected and favourite place of the Santoni family, everyone from its smallest worker to its master artisans plays a big role. “We are a group of fascinating people, a big family who has an even bigger passion for this job,” Giuseppe says, “Nobody here calls me Mr. Santoni, everyone calls me Giuseppe because I’m one of them. The same applies with my father and my mother - it’s all one big family.”
Technique:
The exact sensitivity practiced with their employees can also be found in the making of their footwear, elements that, even in the presence of unending stylistic change, remain at the heart and core of the company. A result of careful selection, only the best and finest natural materials are used, sourced from the most reputable tanneries from across Italy. It’s a method that highlights the inventive craftsmanship and pension for detail the brand has prided itself over. Shapes, structures, and techniques that arise not only from the experience and an innate aptitude at elegance, but a true culture of the shoe that began with the male shoe cobbler connoisseur. “We here at Santoni are very technical shoe people, we know our shoes,” says Giuseppe. “Making them is very complicated”.

‘Hîjj’, By Iraqi Artist Sinan Hussein WHERE: Adliya, Bahrain WHEN: 19 January - 19 February WHAT: Iraq may not be the first destination you think of when it comes to contemporary art and artists, but this is slowly changing. For one thing, its capital Baghdad is renowned for figurative modern and contemporary sculpture; at the Venice Biennale, the Iraqi Pavilion is becoming more and more popular attracting a vast majority of visitors each year; and finally, there's a steady rise of emerging and talented artists coming out of Iraq. One such artist is Sinan Hussein, who this February is showcasing his first solo exhibition work in Bahrain at Al Riwaq Art Space. Bringing together elements from his Iraqi childhood and world travels to create what he calls, “a tragi-comic surrealist landscape”, Sinan explores the cyclical nature of life through his unique oil paintings. A dreamer who escapes the ugly world through his drawings, he manages to portray the spiritual disquiet of our contemporary society, blurring the lines between the grotesque and the beautiful, life and death, and enemies and lovers. www.alriwaqartspace.com

A GOOD YEAR FOR FILM THE STREAMING SENSATIONS Back in cinema’s post-war heyday, a night at the movies was a common way to spend an evening. In fact, in 1946 it is reported that the average British person attended the cinema more than 30 times. But in today’s modern Internet focused society, downloading blockbusters and box sets and streaming films in the privacy of your own home for all-night binge-viewing sessions is taking over from traditional back row cinema nights. Netflix, Amazon Prime and Hulu are the ones to watch, with an immense library of films and TV shows and for 2016, with more and more original movies and exclusive content. What to stream in 2016 Films: Training Day, 2 Fast 2 Furious and Pride and Prejudice (all on Netflix) TV: The Get Down (a Baz Luhrmann cocreated original drama looking into the music scene of 1970s, Netflix), The Crown (another Netflix original following the first years of Queen Elizabeth’s reign), 11.22.63 (a Hulu mini series starring James Franco who plays a high school teacher, who time-travels back to 1963 in an effort to prevent the assassination of President Kennedy).

THE LONG-AWAITED SEQUELS It is the big blockbusters that bring in the big money, so it comes as no surprise that the film industry is once again turning its hand at reinventing the wheel, with sequels of some cult classics coming our way. Some over-due sequels, such as Independence Day: Resurgence, Zoolander No. 2, Bridget Jones’ Baby, Inferno (a follow up to the Da Vinci Code and Angels & Demons), and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story are high on our must-see list.
THE OLD SCHOOL ARE BACK We loved them the first time around (or not) and now we can enjoy a 21st century revamp of some previous cult classics. Ghostbusters is back, but this time, sees an all-female comic line-up including Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy. The Jungle Book has also been given a 2016 makeover starring Scarlett Johansson and Bill Murray, as has The Legend of Tarzan featuring Alexander Skarsgard, Ben Hur, first released in 1959 and The Magnificent Seven – a remake of the 1960s western.
THE FRANCHISE PHENOMENON The power of cinema has yet to be reckoned with, especially if 2015 is anything to go by, which saw the global box office pull in a whopping and record $38n. And it was none other than super blockbuster franchise and Star Wars The Force Awakens that became the fastest movie to take $1billion worldwide at the box office. 2016 looks set to follow this lead with blockbuster franchise films such as DC Comics’ Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War, Star Trek Beyond and X-Men: Apocalypse slated to be some of the year’s biggest movie players and payers.

The Poetry Of Art
For Italian fashion house Etro, art and fashion have long been an inseparable pair, and this year the brand has united the two more than ever...
F
Words: Sophie Jones-Cooper
or Milanese fashion brand Etro, their latest online project entitled “The Circle of Poets”, not only encompasses poets in the traditional sense of the word but a collection of poets defined as artists, minds and talents of all artistic genres.
Personally handpicked by Kean Etro himself, the brand’s menswear creative director, these ten men and one woman have been united by their love of art and their personalities and stories each interpreted in the new FW16 menswear collection. “The essence of the circle was spontaneously born as we first met at Jacques’ (one of the ‘poets’) Brera studio,” he explains. “The sense of belonging and affinity that turns five minutes into hours of stories, became the starting point of the project.”
MEET THE ARTISTS The 11 artists who currently make up the ‘Circle’, come from all walks of artistic life and each have their own story to tell. THE FILM DIRECTOR: ADALBERTO LOMBARDO “A picture is worth a thousand words and making a bad movie is as easy as making a good one, but the result can change the person who sees it, illuminating their soul - feeding their imagination.” THE PAINTER: ALAN BORGUET “My expression in the compositional field displays the irrepressible interplay between positive and negative, black and white, fullness and void to the point of challenging the observer’s perception of subjective harmony and the balance between space and lines.”
THE ART DEALER: ANDREA ZARDIN “It was precisely my love for art that led me to open a gallery focusing mainly on young people. Growing together with them is my hope and life goal, along with trying to bring people to art; a world without art is inconceivable to me.” THE FINE ART STUDENT: CATHRINE LEO “In my artistic work, the concept is the most important aspect of a piece, the very idea that drives it.” THE ARTIST: CESARE RIMINI “Today, the most innovative technologies push us toward an ever more limited niche in a way that seems ‘alienating’. We seem to be losing out on facets of life that should not only be rediscovered, but deserve the investment of

thought and concrete action.” THE TATTOO ARTIST: EDOARDO TABACCHI “The beauty of my work is not only in granting the client’s request, but in assuming the role of a friend, confidant, ‘psychologist’. I have the honour of creating something permanent on someone else’s body, which will accompany them for the rest of their lives.” THE ENTREPRENEUR: FEDERICO SIGNORELLI “I try to express myself through works of art that could even take the form of a swimsuit, but I’m not an artist. I’m one who likes beautiful things.”
124
. sur la terre . culture .
THE PAINTER: JACQUES LEO “Images have the strongest presence in the human mind, and it is through them that I try to underline and express the meaning of everything… of the unity that surrounds us - all in the hopes of bestowing on my audience that oftenobserved and sought-after sensation.” THE ARCHITECT: MATTEO CIABATTINI “Architecture is one [an art form] we can’t avoid; it’s all around us and its changes, its geometry, are the most obvious manifestations of the will of individuals to transform our surroundings.” THE MUSICIAN: NICCOLÒ BASSO “I believe that the human condition is not static, that everyone can seize the reins of dynamism and be themselves, be free. This is the greatest gift, the greatest teaching that music gives us, freedom.”
THE PHOTOGRAPHER: NICOLÒ GIALAIN “Culture is a space without boundaries, a living area in which to grow, with an identity formed by those able to grasp the essential features of their present time.” The black and white portraits of the poets captured by Nicolo Gialain, all in FW16 Etro of course, and the mini-film directed by Adelbarto Lombardo are just the beginnings for The Circle of Poets. A global search for like-minded poets is underway, and through Etro’s website invites artists of all genres to submit their work. Selected artists will then be chosen to develop special projects with the brand and join the unique Circle of Poets. To join the poets, send your work (painting, photography, sculpture, art, writing or music…) by uploading your file/s on www. etro.com/en_it/thecircleofpoets
EMERGEAST SUGGESTS... Online art gallery EMERGEAST.com – created by art authorities Nikki Meftah and Dima Abdul Kader – brings forth the region’s hottest up and coming artists for the Middle East's aspiring collectors. Amongst the heap of talent under their umbrella, the duo shares insights and bespoke advice for their young collectors. Who: Pegah Lari What: Pegah Lari’s works immediately connect the viewer to the history of the artist’s native land: Iran. In particular, Lari references Iran’s Qajar era – yet beyond the recognisable Qajari figures, Lari’s work is multilayered in its diverse symbolism of the past, present and future. Lari manages to present calligraphic forms never seen before and to weave in a contextual eastern element to her Western colour palette. Where: Lari currently lives in her hometown of Tehran in Iran. Lari has started to move in international circles where her vibrant and dynamic work is gaining much attention from esteemed galleries across Europe. When: The time is now for Pegah Lari’s works: the artist’s career is currently at its turning point, taking off to catapult her vivid creations in the investment category very soon. Why: The combination of Eastern and Western cultures - the presence of Qajari figures paired together with contemporary Western elements such as dolls and sunglasses are wrapped up in the traditional calligraphic script. Lari’s marriage between our love for modernity versus attachment to our traditional heritage depicts her unique style as a contemporary Iranian artist. These integrations lend a special timelessness to Pegah Lari’s palpable paintings. All artworks available to order on www.emergeast.com
