Escape. The word evokes different meanings for different people. For me, it’s somewhere over the Mediterranean, lounging lazily by blue waters, golden sands and endless horizons. For others, it could mean an expedition to the Arctic to see the star-speckled sky from the other side of the world. Whatever the reason, in the end we all just want to escape. I might have a few weeks to wait, but this issue has already sparked the excitement of being out of the office in one of the season’s carefree vacation pieces (that Chloé dress has been screaming ‘wear me’ for sometime now). Capturing the free-spirited fantasies conjured by the very thoughts of travel, our fashion editors played loose and louche in the sun, with the prettiest two-piece numbers and beach-to-bar footwear to ensure you look your best whether on the Côte or yacht. Find out what to pack for those precious days when you’re without a care in the world (page 38).

Our cover feature brings us to Qatar, where Federica Visani’s heritage brand, Arabology, is bringing new meaning to covering up. She tells us how moving to Arabia inspired her to take dressing for the desert to modern heights (page 28). For those hitting up a new locale for the first time, “How to Eat like a Local” (page 70) will help you navigate the crazy and wonderful dining scene like an expert. Find out where two food experts go to get a real taste of their home city and the dishes they return to time and again. And finally to wrap things up we end our journey in Seoul, South Korea’s burgeoning capital that few places in the world can match. An assault on the senses, it’s where East meets West, and old meets new. Our photologue captures a city caught between saving tradition and moving boldly into the future. Turn the pages to get lost…

Curious where the region’s jet set crowd vacations? In “Out of the Office” (page 32), we show you how to globetrot like our favourite Middle Eastern designer darlings, Shourouk Rhaiem, Nadine Kanso, Racil Chalhoub and Nathalie Trad. Discover the global boho enclaves and tropical idylls they escape to for a quick adventure away from the concrete jungle and all its headaches.

“When I next go on holiday, don’t expect much from me. I will be turning off my smartphone and trekking into a Wi-Fi black hole. Maybe, just maybe, I’ll send a postcard.” - Writer Sophie Jones-Cooper on her plans for total discconection

“I've been saving two books up for the summer, The first is Steve Jobs, by Walter Isaacson. Isaacson was managing editor of Time Magazine in New York, when I worked as Associate Art Director in the London office, so I pretty much know this is going to be a fantastically well researched and riveting biography on the notoriously difficult yet highly creative design and technology guru, Steve Jobs. And the second is An Indian History of the American West: Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee by Dee Brown. I read this many years ago, it is a heart-wrenching book, but one that is impossible to put down. A must-read!” - SLT’s design maverick Helen Louise Carter shares her reading bucket list for the holidays

16

“Hands down Vietnam. Kayaking in Halong Bay, riding scooters in Hanoi and eating as much pho as possible made it the trip of a lifetime. I can't wait to go back one day.” - Julia Seidl, our Editor-at-Large, on her most memorable holiday to date

“I’m heading to Turkey and the Greek islands looking for that perfect balance between culture and sun!” - Emergeast’s Dima Abdul Kader is island hopping for the summer

“My go-to destinations for this summer are Nice and Amsterdam. Both cities have a completely different aesthetic, so packingwise I'm focusing on basics that I can wear different ways. An Equipment shirtdress is at the top of the list – paired with Golden Goose sneakers in Amsterdam and Soludos espadrilles in Nice.” - SLT staff writer Yara Jishi on where she’s going this summer and what she’ll be wearing

“There is this really cool place in Mykonos where you can buy funky t-shirts called T-bar. They make the perfect gift.” - Bil Arabi's jewellery designer, Nadine Kanso, on what souvenirs she brings back from Greece

WISH YOU WERE HERE Have you become a hashtag holidaymaker or a selfie-infatuated jet setter? Words: Sophie Jones-Cooper

T

he sun is shining, the weather is sweet, makes you want to move those dancing feet…" Bob Marley’s breezy lyrics may ring true for the happy holidaymakers but for those of us left behind, the social media bombardment that follows has turned holidays into an over shared spectacle of ‘send to all’ sunshine updates, Instagrammable wardrobe highs and flatteringly filtered selfies. Whatever happened to the good old postcard and a simple “wish you were here?" Gone are the days of a handwritten note on a generic holiday snap of a postcard, which arrived home a week later than its sender. Today, the swarm of social media addicts whose key purpose in life involves sharing, updating, posting and hashtagging, has changed the way we holiday. If I see another Facebook status picture of a business-class boarding pass perched precariously against a glass of bubbles in the airport lounge, I may have to sign out of Facebook forever. Even before the holiday is booked, the online infatuation begins. Admittedly, choosing where to holiday is a very important decision, but when did we decide it was the done thing to make assumptions about a destination or a hotel after reading people’s reviews of a place, from people we have never even met before nonetheless? Thank you Trip Advisor for vetoing our itinerary before we even set off. Of course, our online age does come with its perks. Checking in online the night before, ordering our capsule holiday wardrobe to our front door from the comfort of our sofa the day before we fly and hailing an Uber to the airport are all undeniably useful plusses of our smartphone generation. But once on holiday,

20

our nimble fingers get the better of us and even the most passive of social sharers can’t resist the odd post. Selfies are bad enough at the best of times but holiday selfies are on another level. Do we really need to see smug sundrenched Instaready images of your every move from beach to pool to bar? And bikini snaps – especially the flatteringly filtered variety – TMI. A group selfie stick shot? Just about acceptable as it beats the local pickpocket stealing your camera. How did the universe manage when film took a week to develop?

. sur la terre . news .

Then there is the wanderlust of travel that these days is so frivolously shared for the whole world to see. Whatever happened to finding an unknown Michelin-worthy restaurant or stumbling across a hidden cove and not even sharing it with your best friends for fear of it becoming too well trodden? Why of course, lets hashtag it to the Twittersphere for all our followers to retweet and share with millions. When I next go on holiday, don’t expect much from me. I will be turning off my smartphone and trekking into a Wi-Fi black hole. Maybe, just maybe, I’ll send a postcard…

R A D AR A A R R Playing dress up

BO

is a right of passage for just about any girl, with millions around the world having teetered around the house in their mother’s heels at one point or another. Designer Federica Visani has her stylish Italian grandmother - a woman who still gets decked out in her finest (jewellery and all) for a visit to the local grocery store - to thank for inheriting her appetite and passion for fashion. “It was the start of everything,” says Federica, a playful smile slowly spreading across her face when she remembers trying on a pair of purple silk pants her Nonna had bought during a cruise on the Nile. “I would spend countless mornings just going through that one closet she had kept to store findings from her travels,” she says. “It was like rummaging through buried treasure.”

She too would go on some wonderful journeys herself, her passion and talent leading her to work amidst the very fashion houses that bore the labels she played dress up in. At Céline (with Phoebe Philo as a mentor), her eyes learned to love straight lines, while at Balenciaga she was taught to open her mind and embrace experimentation by the greats – Nicolas Ghesquière and Alexander Wang. And experiment she did, jumping ship after four years in Paris and making the bold decision to move to Qatar after she was headhunted by Qela, the luxury brand owned by HH Sheikha Mozah bint Nasser Al Missned. A nomad at heart, she flung herself into the culture and landscape and by adhering to the local aesthetic, she changed her way of dressing, wrapping herself in fabric and draping silhouettes. “I found myself trying to look good all covered up and still stay cool, and soon realised it really wasn’t that easy,” Federica explains. And it was thanks to her very own personal trials and tribulations trying to adapt to life in Arabia that her line Arabology was born. Constantly asked by strangers what she was wearing (which were her own designs) and egged on by her friends and husband David Martinez, art director and co-founder of Blue Brush Hair Studio, she set up shop in the backroom of the house they share. “My goal was to be comfortable but still look stunning. To create basics for your closet that you can wear whichever way you want.” Based on the simple will to dress women, Arabology is all about the covetable, yet unequivocally fundamental pieces of a modern wardrobe. The SS16 thirty-piece debut collection is a dreamy myriad of long fluid dresses, billowing capes and oversized yet light coats. Standout pieces include a peppermint blue bomber jacket with Keffiyeh sleeves, the white ‘fur’ dress - a playful take on winter in the desert, and the cosy oversized colour block coat. “It’s all about our silhouettes,” boasts Federica who takes deep pride in this. “Our fluid drapped long layered silhouettes will give women choices: to unveil ingeniously or cover gracefully.” www.houseofarabology.com SS16 CAMPAIGN CREDITS: Photography, Sebastien Jardini / Model, Marie Meyer @Premium_models / Hair, David Martinez @bluebrushdoha / Make-up, Julie Camus / Styling, Federica Visani

Clockwise: Misti Slippers; Sanayi 313 boutique in Istanbul; Nappino & Caos slippers, Chachacha Accordion bag & Ragno clutches; Serena Uziyel.

buzz brand

Sanayi 313 With the style-set parading around like sultans in slippers worthy of an Ottoman Palace, we hunted down Serena Uziyel, Co-founder of label-of-the-moment and concept store Sanayi 313 to find out everthing one needs to know about the brand.

M

is for more than just one concept Sanayi 313 is a lifestyle store in Istanbul where different disciplines are combined: design, art and food. A gallery of distinguished furniture, home & fashion accessories and a healthy/refined restaurant occupy the ground floor within different corners.

T

is for three, the # of design mavericks behind the brand Enis and Amir are the two brothers who built the Sanayi 313 store. Enis is a great interior architect; he came up with the idea of taking a car repair shop and creating this amazing space for the label. He dragged me into the project then eventually my passion for making shoes and bags came to the surface and we decided to go ahead with our own brand.

30

O

is for organiSational skills I used to work for Zara and it was one of the best experiences I have ever had. It’s where I started to experiment with a lot of different textures and materials. I had access to a great supply chain; I learned that this business needs creativity but you also need to have a great system of organisation to survive.

E

is for the exquisite Ottoman embroidery How long does it take to make a pair of Sanyai shoes? It might take up to 60 hours to complete one embellishment on one pair of shoes. There are several stages involved in making the embroidery. Each artwork is executed in rigorous precision. It is almost impossible to repeat the same pattern or texture.

. sur la terre . news .

U

is for how unique each pair is Sanayi 313 Collection offers a great range of shoes and bags collection, with modern attitude. Each piece is executed in rigorous precision by hand with the most meticulous attention to detail, using a wealth of traditional skills in specific artisanal workshops all around the world.

C

is for the coveted Misti Slippers These are my favourites. They are very elaborate, unique and sophisticated. It takes 48 hours to complete a pair, weaving embroidery with combinations of five different metals and raffia yarns. They beautifully show the essence of Sanayi 313. www.sanayi313.com

They’re Kendall and Kylie’s go-to girls for bad girl leather jackets. Nour Hammour and Erin Conry Webb, founders of Paris-based luxury label NOUR HAMMOUR, know a thing or two about making a covetable jacket. who better to turn to than the gorgeous duo for a quick lesson on closet maintenance. Below, the girls share their top tips on how to keep your leather jacket fresh from the box.

spotlig ht on

www.nour-hammour.com

MRS. KEEPA

Make sure to always cover your jacket with a chiffon cloth before you iron it.

Ironing your jacket with the right technique is necessary to keep your wardrobe looking fresh.

Let the jacket breath. Don't keep it in a closed environment for too long, leather is a living material after all. Remember that leather transforms when it is ironed under the right temperature as it brings out a milky, soft and shiny texture. However, should the temperature be too hot it could create a patch resulting into fabric default.

Egyptian designer Mariam Yehia is bringing boho back to life and oh, with such attitude as well. MY INSPIRATIONS: “My mother – she designed and sewed all of our clothes, a talent she developed from her mother. She has built in me my love and passion for fashion.” MOODBOARD: “This season it was a very warm yet colourful colour palette with an overall vintage mood and feel.” FAVOURITE PIECE: “The teddy bears! I initially bought the fabrics while pregnant to create curtains for my baby girl’s room and fell so much in love with it that I decided to include it in the collection. It definitely is my favourite!” THE MRS.KEEPA WOMAN: “She is one who creates her own edge, dictates her very own trends and is confident of her personal style.” www.mrskeepa.com

Seeing Red

Quench your skin’s thirst for protection with the right SPF and after sun must-haves

Oops! Despite your best efforts, you burnt your nose. Soothe inflammed skin with Eisenberg Paris Sublime Tan After Sun Anti-Aging Face Mask. Leave on for 5 to 20 minutes to minimise damage and calm redness.

Moisture Maniac The sun's rays are drying. Treat parched skin to a dose of Eisenberg Paris Sublime Tan Face & Body Oil. Packed with essential fatty acids and Vitamin E, your skin will drink it up.

Guiding Light Strobe like a Kardashian with Dr. Jart Every Sun Day Illuminating Sunscreen SPF 36. Micro opal pearls help brighten skin tone and deliver radiance, meaning you can leave your highlighter on the shelf.

Welcome Matte If the tacky finish that most sunscreens leave behind leaves you cringing, reach for Aesop Protective Body Lotion SPF 50. The lightweight texture and matte finish leaves skin silky, not sticky.

Lather Up Complexion Protection Designed for sensitive skin, Avène Tinted Cream SPF 50, offers maximum protection (most dermatologists only recommend up to SPF 50) while its tinted formulation evens out complexions.

46

Prime Time Sunscreens aren’t always the most makeup-friendly. The exception? Chantecaille Ultra Sun Protection SPF 45 Primer. The anti-aging formulation is oil-free meaning your foundation stays put.

. sur la terre . beauty .

Your mane needs protection too. Treat your locks and sclap to a spritz of Nuxe Paris Moisturising Protective Milky Oil for Hair. Afterwards, wash away sunscreen, salt and chlorine with Nuxe Paris AfterSun Hair & Body Shampoo. The twoin-one sends them all straight down the drain.

Fake ‘n Bake For a sun kissed glow minus the UV rays, the right bottle or compact is all you need

Baby Skin Designed for the sensitive skin of the face, Sisley Self Tanning Hydrating Facial Skin Care moisturises while it darkens thanks to hydrating stevia leaf and chestnut extract.

Smooth as Silk If you’re after a matte bronzer that won’t highlight your pores (shimmer can enhance their appearance), brush on Urban Decay Beached Bronzer, available in two creamy shades.

Cirque de Soleil

Midas Touch Thanks to its tinted formulation, you can actually see where you’ve applied Guerlain Terracotta Sunless Tinted Self-Tanning Gel, meaning a streak-free tan is guaranteed in just one hour.

We admit this limited edition Sephora Sun Disk Bronzer is almost too pretty to use but use you must if you’re after subtly golden cheeks with just a hint of shimmer. We suggest you buy two.

Happy Hours Two Timer

Upwardly Mobile

Double up your tanning power with Clarins Self Tanning Milky Lotion. It tans both your face and body plus its fresh scent does away with that icky DHA odor.

Bronze on the go with a Sephora Self-Tanning Wipe. Pop one in your purse and in just a few minutes, you’ll look like you spent a week lounging on the sandy shores of St. Tropez.

No matter your skin tone, Estée Lauder Bronze Goddess Luminous Liquid Bronzer leaves behind a (temporary) pearlised glow. Great when you want a tan for one night only.

undone During the spring shows, the word “individual” was tossed around backstage like a hot potato wrapped in an Hermès scarf. The idea of celebrating one’s individuality played out in the manes at Alexander Wang, Chloé and Stella McCartney (pictured) where tousled bedhead waves and masses of curls were perfectly imperfect. In other words, au natural strands with a hint of dishevelment ruled the runways. What does this means for us mere mortals who weren’t born with model-worthy locks? Play up, not against, your natural texture. If the “no-makeup” makeup look taught us anything, going natural does not mean going product free. Treat wet strands to a spritz of a texturising mist and let Mother Nature do her thing. Air dry is the new blow dry.

Seen by some as a fashion accessory and some as an exercise in modesty, the turban can be both glamourous and conservative. instagram star sahar foad tells us how.

F

or Dolce & Gabbana, no vacation is complete without a silken scarf in a vibrant print wrapped effortlessly around around your mane. Italian summers of days gone by ruled their SS16 runway and the accessory that warranted prime real estate in their travel trunk was the turban. For Instagram star Sahar Foad (above), seeing the turban embraced by Western designers was a welcome sight. “It helps hijabis to roam the streets confident, trendy and stylish,” says the Egypt-based civil engineer who often trades in her more traditional headscarf for a turban. “I tend to wear turbans more to events, fashion-related outings and [special] occasions.” But buying a ready-made turban as sold in stores is not the choice of Sahar, who prefers to wrap her own. Silver screen icons from Elizabeth Taylor to Audrey Hepburn (whose Roman Holiday role inspired D&G’s runway) rocked the turban in the 50s and 60s but it’s a certain modern-day Arab royal that inspires Sahar. “HH Sheikha Mozah bint Nasser Al Missned is the best example of how a turban can be sophisticated and elegant.”

When it comes to fitness, abs aren't being made in the kitchen. they’re being made in the lab. gone are the days of Jane Fonda workouts and leg warmer-clad ‘Keep Fitters’. Today, health aficionados are looking for more than what the neighbourhood gym has to offer. Enter OXFitness Lab, Qatar’s unique and revolutionary way to break a sweat. Aimed at fitness enthusiasts and athletes alike, this isn’t a facility where anyone can walk in and join a class. This is a specialised centre for those looking for total health and fitness in mind, body and spirit. Their motto?

“We are not a gym, we are a fitness lab”.

A UNIQUE & HOLISTIC APPROACH

F

ocusing on three core pillars - OxHealth, OxTraining and OxLife - the Lab offers bespoke training, nutritional programs and a comprehensive IPT (Intelligent Personal Training) health check using the latest technology straight from Europe. Each pillar has a pivotal role in an individual’s health and well-being.

Proving that fitness is more than just about working out, the lab’s unique and holistic approach to wellness is taking the GCC by storm. Find out what all the fuss is about... A REVOLUTIONARY FITNESS CONCEPT Located exclusively at The Gate Mall in the heart of Doha’s Westbay, the 1,700-square foot club guides members through a personalised path towards balanced nutrition and physical health. The aim is to provide the finest collaborative personal service and facilities, all within a motivating and innovative environment.

TRAINING IS JUST ONE IMPORTANT ELEMENT “It ha s b e e n t hr o u g h m y t i m e r e p r e s e nt i ng Qat ar i n c r o s s c o u nt r y ral l i e s t hat I d e v e l o p e d t he d r i v e and k no wl e d g e t o l e ad a v e nt u r e i n t he he al t h and s p o rt s i nd u s t r y,” s ays M o ham mad A b u I s s a , fo u nd e r o f O x Fit ne s s Lab . “The he al t h and s p o rt s i nd u s t r y i s o ne o f t he k e y fo c u s e s o f Qat ar’s nat i o nal v i s i o n and it i s an ho no u r t o hav e a b u s i ne s s i n l i ne wit h t he c o u nt r i e s am bit i o ns fo r fu t u r e d e v e l o p m e nt s .”

Unlike conventional gyms that still operate using traditional methods and with the oldfashioned mindset that the key to well-being is training, at OxFitness Lab health and lifestyle are just as crucial. They help members with the provision of knowledge and education, further monitoring and managing effectively all the key elements of their well-being, rather than just focusing on training.

A WORLD CLASS TEAM Developing a strong and knowledge-based team was one of the lab’s biggest challenges

and biggest investments. The results are astounding; a team of 10 international instructors have joined them from all over the world as experts in their fields to support in delivering a world class and soon to be world-renowned service.

MONITORING & TRACKING EVERY ACTIVITY To gain a detailed insight into their members physiological make-up, every client is put through an extensive assessment (the aforementioned IPT health check) before any sort of diet, exercise or supplementation program is advised. With this technology, the lab is able to generate an in-depth health report about each member, checking everything from blood pressure, HRV (heart rate variability), flexibility and strength to endurance, body fat, water retention and nutrition. OxFitness is the only facility in the GCC with this technology. www.oxfitnesslab.com

POSTWORKOUT BLISS

After a workout, members are encouraged to recover in the steam, sauna and hot and cold dipping pools. There is an opportunity to have a deep tissue treatment or post-workout sports treatment as well. In addition to this, healthy smoothies, salads and sandwiches can be enjoyed in the OxLife lounge.

Lavish Lounging Top 5 Airport Lounges in the World

T

TRAVEL COMPANIONS

he excitement of travel is undeniable but we’re not just talking about the destination. With cuisine from world-class chefs, beauty treatments that rival spas in the chicest cities and private Porsche terminal transfers, airport lounges have become swanky sanctuaries for the crème de la crème of passengers. At these top five airport lounges, it’s so easy to lose yourself amongst the splendors that you’ll find yourself wishing for a later departure time.

Whether you’re heading on a mini-break or plan on jetting off around the world, count on these brilliant styles to take you there.

Etihad Diamond First Class Lounge

THE BACKPACK Make a chic hassle-free exit with the jet sets’ latest obsession – the backpack. Ideal for toting around the essentials.

Where: Abu Dhabi Airport, UAE Why: This first class lounge doesn’t fall short of the glitz and glam the Middle East has to offer. The oasis that is Etihad’s diamond lounge is the epitome of luxury thanks to their champagne bar, cigar lounge, nannies on staff to watch your little ones, and a Six Senses Spa with complimentary treatments. We love: The Realignment Spa Treatment. It improves overall well-being and releases tension.

Frankfurt First Class Lounge Where: Frankfurt Airport, Germany Why: We call it a lounge, but it’s actually a dedicated first-class terminal with its own passport control and security checkpoints. Private sleeping rooms, bathrooms with full showers and its famous cigar lounge make it hard to beat. We love: Being whisked away in a private luxury German car straight to the airplane.

52

Virgin Atlantic Clubhouses Where: London Heathrow Airport, London & JFK International Airport, New York Why: Both of these luxe lounges boast a matchless array of amenities. We’re talking complimentary spa services, Bumble and Bumble hair salons (our favourite) and mouth-watering food. We love: “The Den” at Heathrow where you can play retro video games or catch a flick on the state-ofthe-art flat screens.

Star Alliance Lounge Where: Guarulhos Airport, São Paulo Why: At this Star Alliance Lounge, your holiday doesn’t end. Enjoy a caipirinha off the hand-carved cunaru-wood bar or refresh in the shower suites that are lined with typical Portuguese calçada, the mosaic cobblestone paving found at Copacabana beach. We love: The authentic Brazilian feel evoked by the indigenous woods, natural rope and other local materials.

HOTEL TRENDS THESE DAYS… Hotels are becoming a home away from home; they are focusing much more on the guest’s experience by creating rooms that are larger and more luxurious. In the past hotels could accommodate thousands of guests. Now they are choosing to accommodate hundreds and ensuring their experience is the pinnacle of comfort and luxury. In addition to the obvious, they are also becoming far more creative, from decoration to cuisine to making sure each guest’s experience is personal to them. I have found that many people in the region have exquisite homes and they expect their visit to a hotel to be up to those standards, but at the same time the experience must be intimate. CHANGING HOLIDAY HABITS… Holidays that are out of many people’s comfort zone are becoming popular; these tend to be longer and much more adventurous, although luxury and comfort always remain crucial.

Planning an escape and looking to bask in the ultimate arms of luxury? Hatem Chatter, the regional director for The Leading Hotels of the World, discusses the standards set for its hotels and why you should be booking your next stay with them. Jet setters take note!

WHERE TO VISIT NEXT… Europe is definitely the go-to destination this summer, in particular Amsterdam, Italy and Switzerland. The Leading Hotels of the World (LHW) have over 150 hotels within Europe so there are plenty of unusual destinations to choose from. WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN BOOKING… Large spaces, breathtaking views and a grand lobby! The LHW website is great because you can view all the facilities and scroll through an image gallery of all the member hotels. It also depends on the reason for travelling; this could be for art, a conference, shopping or adventure sports. You must first understand what you are travelling for and seek hotels that cater to those needs, you can call the LHW office and speak to one of our knowledgeable advisors. The LHW team is always on hand to help. BEST TRAVEL ADVICE… Don’t avoid anything, grasp an adventure with both hands and be curious; the sky is the limit. www.lhw.com

B

ack in March, the vast peaks and escarpments of South Africa’s Stellenbosch Winelands found themselves in rare company. Under the blanket of a million stars on the helipad of the ultra-luxurious Del Air Graff Estate, the select few members of the Middle East’s automotive press corps gathered to experience a new Dawn. In a city accustomed to rarity (Cape Town is, after all, home to one of the rarest of natural occurrences, that of a confluence of two oceans – the Atlantic and the Indian – as well as a hub for the trading of a myriad precious stones and exquisite metals), to be chosen as the launch venue for an all-new Rolls-Royce product line seems aptly fitting. So, too is the sense of optimism here. Cape Town feels young and vibrant. Learning its lessons from its checkered past, the city and its people are constantly looking towards a brighter future – The c ar’s b e au t i fu l l y something that the Dawn is p r o p o rt i o ne d b o d y i s ad o r ne d designed to encapsulate. Or, as the ebullient Richard Carter, wit h s u b t l e l i ne s t hat m i m i c global marketing director for t hat o f t he o s t e nt at i o u s 1952 Rolls-Royce, points out with a Sil v e r Dawn Dr o p he ad whi c h sparkle in his eye, a sense of la dolce vita.

served as mu se

Coming in the subsiding aftermath of a global economic crisis that crippled every major market and, in the face of an almost constant stream of bad news emanating from the world’s trouble spots, there is a purpose to the marque’s move away from its usual supernatural nomenclature and the resurrection of the famously optimistic Dawn moniker. The car’s beautifully proportioned body is adorned with subtle lines that mimic that of the ostentatious 1952 Silver Dawn Drophead which served as muse. There’s a sweeping waistline that starts at the drooping prow, upon which sits the forward leaning Spirit of Ecstasy, and culminates in the muscular haunches of the rear quarter, resting over softly

The first thing that impresses me on the blind, undulating turns of Chapman’s Peak Drive is the driving dynamic of the Dawn. The steering is short, sharp and precise - making it a breeze to traverse the winding strip of tarmac that follows.

DON’T LEAVE cape town WITHOUT... 1. Going eye-to-menacing-eye with a Great White shark. 2. Joining the Capetonians to laze on the lawns of the Kirstenbosch and enjoy live music. 3. Saluting the sun as it rises at the iconic Table Mountain (yoga devotees will certainly appreciate this one!) 4. Driving along Chapman’s Peak’s twistyturny road. 5. Enjoying a seafood barbecue on the beach up the glorious West Coast.

flared wheel arches. The subtle, upwardly raked rear overhang add a coquettish, feminine sexuality to the purposeful, muscular stance of the front.

from the Dawn, which seemingly rears back, albeit gently, and that growl, familiar to Wraith drivers, emanates from beneath the car.

Then, there’s the interior. Four cosseting seats sit replete with gloriously vibrant leather adding a sense of whimsy that juxtaposes the dark canadel wood panelling that covers the rear deck and cascades through the centre of the cabin. It is breathtaking in both its confidence and beauty. I slide behind the wheel, closing the vast coach door behind me, and press the start button. The mighty 6.2-litre V12 discreetly sighs awake and I pull out into the Bank Holiday Sunday traffic that clogs the road. The first thing that impresses me on the blind, undulating turns of Chapman’s Peak Drive is the driving dynamic of the Dawn. The steering is short, sharp and precise and, while it’s easy (or, perhaps, effortless, even) to rhythmically cruise from corner to corner by just steering with only a thumb and forefinger, the car has some heft, giving me a sense of feedback from the road as to where the front wheels are positioned.

in the know 2016 Rolls-Royce Dawn Engine: 6.6-litre V12 Power / Torque: 563bhp @ 5,250rpm / 780Nm @ 1,500rpm Transmission: Eight-speed, dual clutch automatic Weight: 2,560kg Performance: Top speed 250km/h (governed) / 0-100km/h in 4.9 sec Price: $387,699

It’s incredibly hard to be objective when you’re piloting a car that bears a name synonymous with perfection. The Smeg, for instance, might be considered “the Rolls-Royce of fridges,” while the 1957 Fender Stratocaster is arguably “the Rolls-Royce of guitars.” Most people would espouse the Phantom as the “Rolls-Royce of Rolls-Royces,” but I would happily advocate on behalf of the Dawn for that coveted title. The Phantom is Churchillian in its gravitas, while the Ghost is a captain of industry. The Wraith, as I have said before in these pages, is the cad – mischievous and irreverent. The Dawn, however, is the carefree playboy. It’s socially astute, image conscious and optimistic. It is a car for the young at heart, for those whom the weight of the world’s ills has not yet dampened their spirit of ecstasy.

Traversing the winding strip of tarmac which follows the line of Hout’s Bay becomes an almost zen experience, as this phenomenal machine just sweeps from bend to bend, eating up the miles with fluid ease. Under firm acceleration, there’s an immediate pick up

58

As we entered the final stage of our journey, along the monumentally fabulous Faure Marine Drive towards The Glasshouse near Rooi Els, we hit a spot of rain. That meant raising the roof. Dropping to around 50km/h, I activate “the silent ballet” from the passenger seat, and within 22 seconds, the beautifully engineered mechanism had cocooned us in thick fabric. Apart from the pattering of an autumn shower, the inside was as silent as you would expect from one of the company’s coupés.

The glorious poolside boutique is home to the ready-to-wear collection, accessories, watches and in July and August, some high jewellery. While over-indulging and lazing around are popular holiday pastimes, more and more of us are opting for a more active approach to our well-earned breaks and adopting an attitude of improving wellness, health and in turn, happiness. Canyon Ranch, renowned for its wellness and lifestyle-oriented concept of resort and holidaying, is bringing its world of goodness to the Aegean shores of Turkey near Bodrum this summer with the opening of its Kaplankaya wellness resort on the Turkish Riviera in July. Here, enthusiasts can get their feel good factor from daily fitness classes, hiking, bike riding, water sports and indulge in nutritious gourmet cuisine, as well as kicking back in the huge 107,500 square-foot spa. www.canyonranchdestinations.com

NEW YORK We can’t think of anywhere better to spend lazy days and hot summer nights in the Big Apple than on a Manhattan rooftop. And the rooftop of summer 2016, has to be the new al fresco lounge at the SLS Park Avenue due to open its doors this July. Chic uptown destination, check; Philippe Starck design, check; style posse, check… On the foodie front, José Andrés’s latest Bazaar restaurant (think traditional Spanish tapas and inventive tasting menus but with a unique and contemporary culinary twist) is opening in the same building giving you a onestop destination to check in, dine, drink and city gaze. www.slshotels.com

LAKE COMO If you can’t persuade Mr. Clooney to let you join him at his Lake Como villa, there are plenty of other equally luxe places to stay, minus the A-list host of course. Take a seaplane over Lake Como and you will see for yourself the expanse of decadent private villas and luxury abodes, including some seriously stylish newcomers. For a welcome change to the sprawl of Renaissance palazzos, Il Sereno Lago di Como is a contemporary masterpiece near Torno village on the eastern edge of the lake, which is opening this summer. Arrive by custom Riva water limousine to the hotel’s private dock and sink into lakeside luxury in one of the 37 suites and villas, dive into the 60-foot infinity pool or dine on the sublime waterside terrace. www.ilsereno.com

CAP D’ANTIBES It is hard to beat the French Riviera in June and July with the endless lazy days spent lounging on sundrenched terraces perched over sandy shores. So if you are lucky enough to be embarking on a retreat to any of the many ‘it’ destinations along the coast, be sure to book a table at the newly renovated Michelin-starred restaurant Les Pêcheurs at the idyllic seafront Cap d’Antibes Beach Hotel. Perfectly placed midway between Cannes and Nice, Les Pêcheurs is world renowned for its culinary prowess, serving up delicious Mediterranean dishes on its stunning terrace by the sea. The hotel has recently re-opened after a hefty renovation with the restaurant now under charge of Chef Nicolas Rondelli. www.ca-beachhotel.com

LAGUNA BEACH Miami’s Art Basel and New York’s vibrant gallery scene aren’t the only players on America’s art block vying for your attention. Over in South California, Laguna Beach is quite the art destination especially during the summer when its hosts the annual (and one of the nation’s oldest) fine arts show, Festival of Arts and Pageant of the Masters. This year from 7th July – 31st August, the Ritz-Carlton Laguna Niguel is offering guests an overnight experience to celebrate the highly acclaimed arts event. Behind-the-scenes tours, two tickets to the Pageant of the Masters performance and admission for two to Festival of the Arts are part of the deluxe velvet rope pacakge. www.ritzcarlton.com

. sur la terre . life .

Not only is Seoul the soul of South Korea, it’s also the beating heart of over ten million people. It’s a city stepping boldly into the future while keeping one foot firmly planted in tradition, and the contrasts can be striking. It’s a place where ultra-modern skyscrapers dwarf Buddhist temples; ajummas (older Korean women) sell homegrown produce on the sidewalk next to Michelin-star restaurants; and where the Han people’s staunch work ethic is matched only by their love of late night karaoke and 24-hour shopping. But don’t discount the mountains that surround the city. Within the rocky walls, nature lovers and urbanites are often one and the same.

Top 3 restaurants in sydney: 1. The Apollo: A Greek restaurant and our favourite ‘fancy-ish’ place to eat. We always order ‘the full Greek’, and it never disappoints! We get the best things on their menu - slow roast lamb, taramasalata dip, Greek salad, the best roast potatoes and the most amazing fried saganaki cheese with honey!

Favourite spots for breakfast: Bills, Sonoma, La Renaissance Patisserie, The Tea Cosy (pictured) and The Grounds of Alexandria to name a few. There are endless good breakfast spots in Sydney!

2. Lucio’s pizzeria: All the pizzas are to die for. Favourites include the Tartufata and the one with potato and rosemary.

Where to grab a good cup of coffee: Gypsy espresso in Potts Point is my number one. It’s my local go-to spot. I also love Single Origin Roasters. Favourite local dish & where to try it: I don’t think there are many local dishes to be honest. Australia’s food scene is such a big melting pot of different cuisines, and they are all done so well. A local favourite thing to eat though is meat pies, and while I am not a huge fan of them, Bourke St. Bakery are well known for good pies.

3. Home Thai: We love their Pad Thai and duck Larb. Addictive!

Restaurant with a view: I honestly haven’t tried any of the iconic harbour-front fine dining restaurants, and I am sure they are all wonderful…but for us, a great meal with a view consists of buying really good fish and chips wrapped in paper near the beach (Bondi or Coogee are our favourites) and sitting right on the sand to enjoy them! Simple, but so satisfying. A picnic in a pretty park is always a good idea too (Elizabeth or Rushcutters Bay are both wonderful with great harbour views!)

. sur la terre . life .

Grab a bite & people watch: Anywhere in The Rocks on the weekend, or Newtown if you want to see some of the most interesting looking people in the city! In the summer, Bondi beach is always buzzing so a lunch at Speedo’s is great to see it all happen. Best alfresco terrace: The of Alexandria.

Grounds

Best burger in town: So far, our favourite is Burger Project. There are so many burger spots in Sydney (it’s quite the obsession here), and we’ve only tried a handful. Burger Project by Neil Perry is always the winner. Secret spot: Locally here in Potts Point where we live, there is this tiny hole-in-the-wall spot called ‘Dumpling & Noodle House’. You’d miss it if you weren’t looking, and it is anything but fancy. Just a few tiny wobbly plastic tables are set out on the sidewalk from 6-10pm with uncomfortable stools and slightly aggressive service sometimes, but they make the best dumplings I’ve ever had! And their home-brewed soy sauce is something we’ve contemplated stealing on several occasions. A favourite for sure! For those with a killer sweet tooth: One of my favourite sweet treats in Sydney is the ginger brûlée tart by Bourke Street Bakery. I never get tired of it! Gelato Messina is great for a late night ice-cream fix. La Renaissance Patisserie has the best French pastries. And finally, Guylian for a rich Belgian hot chocolate.

Top 3 restaurants in rotterdam: 1. FG Foodlabs & FG Restaurant: This duo from chef Francois Geurds (soon to be situated next to each other at the hip and industrial Hofbogen) is innovative, creative and super friendly, which always translates into an awesome dining experience.

Where to grab a good cup of coffee: I’m not a big coffee drinker but I do love lattes. For a perfect latte, I go to Hopper.

Favourite spot for breakfast: That would be at Memory Lane which is my favourite hang-out spot. I love to start the day with an egg and here you can order a perfect oeuf cocotte with homemade bread.

Best alfresco terrace: For sure the best terrace is the rooftop patio of The Suicide Club. Order a cocktail and enjoy Rotterdam from high in the sky. Best burger in town: For the best burger, go to Ter Marsch & Co. Besides their awesome regular burgers they have seasonal burgers. Last summer they had a chicken burger that was to die for!

Favourite local dish & where to try it: Haring or Hollandse nieuwe, is a typical Dutch dish. The way to eat it is also typical Dutch, you pick the raw herring up from the tail dip it in onions and lift it up into the air and then bite it upwards. You can buy the herring from street stalls, but for the best experience I would recommend Schmidt Zeevis. Restaurant with a view: HMB Restaurant in the Rotterdam tower has a gorgeous view of the Erasmus Bridge and river Maas. The restaurant is also very easy on the eyes. Grab a bite & people watch: The perfect spot for people watching is for sure the Witte de Withstraat with its many bars and restaurants. Here you see so many different types of people passing by. Always a good spot to sit down at is the terrace of Restaurant Bazar. Grab a table (if possible as its always crowded), order food and check out the crowd.

2. Dertien: Chefs Pepijn Schmeink and Remco van Erp’s laid-back attitude make this place one of the most pleasant places to eat local seasonal food.

3. Yama: Chef Yama brings the real taste of Japan to Rotterdam. The restaurant has a peaceful and serene vibe, which perfectly suits the cuisine. Secret spot: That would be the secret bar called the Dr. where you would need to have their number to make an appointment with the doctor. Once you get there, you can order some awesome cocktails. For those with a killer sweet tooth: Sweet tooth heaven in Rotterdam is Koekela, where you can buy anything sweet. But I also love the cakes at Mangiare, the apple pie at Dudok and the Japanese cake rolls from Round & Round.

As you enter, you are met with a sumptuously-appointed parlour, the focal point of which is a 1930s Steinway Baby Grand piano which sits under the watchful eye of Ludwig van Beethoven and is lit by two massive crystal chandeliers (which frame a minstrel’s gallery- styled second floor balcony). In the corner, a turntable playing Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue adds the necessary grandeur to the surroundings, while a huge mirror, set above a roaring fireplace, houses a hidden 50-inch TV that announces our arrival, which still feels somewhat dreamlike.

. A carpeted staircase winds its way up to the second floor, though the elevator, while glacially slow and cladded in enough mirrored surfaces to make Liberace weep with joy, is the truly stylish way to arrive at the vestibule of the suite’s private quarters. From here, you get the best vantage point from which to truly take in the opulence of the lower floor. The view afforded by the aforementioned minstrel’s gallery is quite lovely and gives one a true sense of the scale and luxury of the apartment that photographs just fail to capture.

So, they find themselves in auspicious company as, at around 7pm on a muggy Saturday in June, my good lady and I met Lucas, our elegantly-attired butler, who showed us to the room. I use the word room loosely, as this sprawling abode dwarfs my Doha apartment by a considerable margin. The bathroom alone is bigger than my living room.

e l’ s Mu s i c i a n ’ s P e

The Corinthia, being one of London’s finest lodgings, attracts a certain level of clientele. Regularly patronised by Saudi princes and popculture royalty, I’m being granted very rare access to one of its most in-demand living spaces. When Sur la Terre Arabia first visited the Corinthia a few years ago, all of its seven penthouses were occupied and I suspect that, given we sat opposite each other for coffee in the atrium, that Will.I.Am was resident in the Musician’s suite at the time. It’s a favourite home-away-from-home of Johnny Depp, as well.

g h ot

“If the walls in that penthouse could talk,” my barber muses, “there would be some great stories.” The billet in question is where I have found myself for my 39th birthday and, while my celebrations are unlikely to live up to any insinuated legends, the Musician’s suite provides an unlikely backdrop for the passing of another year in the life of a working-class Welsh chancer like myself.

Behind me, my man Lucas is studiously unpacking my suitcase and assessing which items will require pressing before dinner. This flurry of activity takes place in the walk-in wardrobe, which doubles as an ante-room to the prodigious bathroom. A vision in marble and glass, the underfloor heating ensures that, despite the spacious expanse, it remains warm and inviting. The twin “his-and-hers” sinks are flanked by a cavernous bathtub, replete with TV, and equally ample rainfall shower.

The best, however, is still yet to come, and as you enter the boudoir, with its ridiculously comfortable, gazillionthread count, puffy cloud-like bed, the first thing you notice are two doors. One leads to a small balcony overlooking the open-air atrium in the lobby lounge, the other is a portal to another world entirely. It’s the cherry that’s quite literally on the top; the pièce d’resistance; the final crescendo in this overture of luxury. As you step through the door, you are transported to a world of rooftops and spires. A long, tree-lined roof garden stretches for about 30 feet, with a horseshoe of stylish outdoor furniture cosseting a large open fire at one end. And the views are spectacular. Panoramic vistas of London’s south bank, stretching from BT Tower to St. Paul’s on one side, to the London Eye and the Palace of Westminster on the other, interrupted only by the myriad Georgian and Edwardian rooftops of Britain’s capital that seemed distinctly reminiscent of a scene from Mary Poppins. During our short stay, my good lady and I took full advantage of this magical vantage point, enjoying many a late night there that we ended up seeing the sun rise on more than one occasion. Dinner on that first evening, though, was set for eight o’clock sharp in the bosom of my family at the hotel’s splendid eatery, Massimo. I visited the restaurant during my last stay, when it was marketed as an Oyster Bar and seafood heavily influenced the menu. However, under the watchful eye of a new executive chef, Massimo has become, arguably, one of the best Italian fine dining options in the city. Parpardelle with duck ragù, ravioli with prawns and burrata cheese, potato gnocchi with Italian sausage in a walnut sauce, pan-roasted veal with potato purée – there was not one dish that arrived at the table that did not leave each of our party of six in the throes of epicurean rapture. Suitably sated, we retired to Basoon, the hotel’s 1920s Art Deco music room-inspired piano bar, for some first class entertainment and a few of its rakishly prepared signature drinks. It was busy every night we were there, with a wonderfully vibrant atmosphere provided by the many patrons who had “wandered in off the street to hear the jazz go down.” If you get that last reference, dear reader, then you will appreciate why we returned to the suite to take advantage of the turntable, with Dire Straits and the Sultans of Swing providing the mood as the party ebbed towards dawn. We were fortunate to spend another two wonderful days at the Corinthia London, but, unfortunately, space dictates that I have to end my journal of this most memorable of weekends here. I will simply finish by noting that, during my tenure with this venerable organ, I have had the pleasure of enjoying some of the world’s best hotels, in its finest locales. However, without a doubt, the time well whiled away with my loved ones at the Corinthia’s Musician’s Penthouse has provided the best song on the soundtrack of my jet-setting career so far. It’s a magnum opus; my Sergeant Pepper. Indeed, for once, the second album has more than lived up to the hype. www.corinthia.com

Fitting then that the One & Only feels less like a hotel perhaps and more a trio of architecturally Arabic havens, standing in a rich expanse of lansdcaped grounds covered with fantastically lush green gardens hidden behind row upon row of tall trees and palms. The resort spans a boastful 65 kilometres and lays claim to a kilometre of white sand beach looking out to the Palm Jumierah and Arabian Gulf. Each of the three distinct properties - the Palace, Arabian Court and Residence and Spa are built on influences reminiscent of the Orient and Arabia, so much so that within the Arabian Court is a grand hallway comprising of seven arches, each eloquently designed to represent the seven states of the United Arab Emirates - Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Qaiwain, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah, where below every arch inlaid to the floor is a unique star mosiac, each designed to represent one of the states. Man of the Hour

As Jacob & Co. celebrates three decades, founder Jacob Arabo chats with SLT on one in a million gems, his personal motto and the launch of his second flagship store in Dubai. By Julia Seidl

In 1663,

legendary gem merchant Jean-Baptiste Tavernier travelled to the depths of India in search of precious stones to dazzle the French court and in particular, King Louis XIV. No ordinary diamond would do. He needed a rock that would blind His Majesty with its sparkle and lead to unadulterated gasps of admiration. His efforts were rewarded with the discovery of diamonds of such extraordinary transparency that, upon viewing the stones’ diaphanous quality, the King himself called them “pools of crystal water.” These sparklers, brought to western Europe by Mr. Tavernier from the fortified city of Golconda, are characterised by their water-clear appearance and are often classified as whiter than white, earning them a Type IIa designation, a grade awarded to less than 2% of all diamonds. To say that a Golcanda diamond is rare is an understatement.

Legend has it that the Koh-i-Noor and Hope Diamond both came from the mines of Golcanda and now, several centuries later, jeweller Jacob Arabo has in his possession The Eye of Golconda, a 40ct pear-shaped D-internally flawless diamond. “It is one in several millions,” says the founder and chairman of Jacob & Co. “It is an absolutely extraordinary gem.” Like his newly acquired gem, Jacob himself is somewhat of a legend. You may know him better as Jacob the Jeweller, a name bestowed upon him by the hip hop community who were early adopters of his pieces and who showed their gratitude by name dropping his moniker into their beats. Kanye West, Jay-Z and 50 Cent are just a handful of rappers who have showered the jeweller with lyrical love, resulting in a grand total of almost 70 musical mentions. But ever the diplomat, Jacob won’t play favourites and reveal the rhyme he likes best. “It has been so great having the support from my musical clients in this way, but to be completely honest, I cannot isolate one in particular.” It’s been over two decades since Jacob became part of hip-hop history and exactly 30 years since he launched his eponymous jewellery brand. His foray and subsequent conquering of both the gem and watch world are the “I st riv e to s urpri s e my clie nt s each year with i nno vativ e pie c e s u nlike anythi ng el s e i n the market. Whil st there are still ideas o ut there, there i s still wo rk t o be do ne.” makings of a great American success story. At 14, he immigrated to the United States from Uzbekistan (once a stop on the Silk Road trading route). Two years later, he began working as a jeweller’s apprentice and by 17 he had opened up a workshop of his own. Using the profits he earned from manufacturing pieces for other brands, Jacob began creating his own collection. His unique designs and a burgeoning demand for his jewels meant he soon outgrew his space and so the designer opened up his first store in New York City. His flagship boutique is located just shy of the Upper East Side, smack dab between two of the city’s swankiest streets, Madison and Park Avenue. When asked about undertaking such a gamble at such a young age, Jacob is matter of fact. “Every entrepreneur has to be a risk-taker."

From top: Inside Jacob & Co.'s Geneva workshop, which opened in 2012; Interior workings of the Epic SF24; Launced in 2014, the Astronomia Tourbillon is Jacob & Co.'s most ambitious timepiece.

Hands of Time - Five Time Zone (2002) - Quenttin (2006)

This risk-taking nature has come in handy on the design front for Jacob, who says he lives by the motto, “the sky is not the limit.” And it’s also probably the secret sauce that has led celebrities and fashion industry types (Madonna, David Beckham, Beyonce and Dolce & Gabbana have all worked with the designer) to choose his pieces over more conservative brands. After all, what good is a gem if it's not turning heads?

His passport is stamped with custom declarations from some of the most exotic places in the world, thanks to his sourcing trips to find the sparkliest baubles. “Different soils are rich with different types of gems,” says Jacob. “For example, sapphires and rubies are sourced from Burma which is the finest place on earth to find these gems whilst Paraiba tourmaline are sourced from Brazil and colour diamonds from South Africa and Australia.” Coloured gemstones are sort of a specialty for the jeweller. The pink diamond Jacob & Co. ring given to Victoria Beckham by her husband David has reportedly increased so much in value, she no longer wears it in public.

When he first entered the watch game over a decade ago, Jacob has admitted he faced resistance from factories in Switzerland who were hesitant to work with a brand that wasn’t of European origin. But in typical Jacob fashion, he barrelled through, experimenting not only with design but also with a timepiece’s complications, creating groundbreaking pieces that earned the respect of the industry and continue to draw headlines at Baselworld. From his Astronomia Tourbillon (whose bubble casing made out of a single sapphire crystal allows for an unhindered view of every element of the watch’s mechanics) to his Billionaire (an $18 Million stunner that is covered in 260 carats of emerald-cut diamonds), his timepieces test the limits of horology. Case in point – the the Astronomia Sky that launched this year at Basel. It introduced a never-before-seen complication – a three-dimensional sidereal display with an oval sky indicator and a 24-hour day and night display.

Jacob’s Jewels n ati

The designer took a leap again when he introduced watches into his collection in 2001. Jacob’s first watch was named Angel (after his wife Angela) and he only produced 100 of them. Within one week, they were sold out. Clearly, customers were eager to decorate their wrists with a Jacob. With his celebrity clients and their jet-setting ways in mind, he created his Five Time Zone watch. It features four fixed time zones – New York, LA, Tokyo and Paris – with the fifth dial set to the wearer’s choice. In signature Jacob fashion, it wasn’t short on sparkle. Covered with 239 diamonds and weighing over 260 carats, it took over two years to make and was quickly snapped up by its target market (Elton John once ordered 22 as gifts). Despite the flash, it’s a throwback to a watch his father gave him on his 13th birthday that featured a map of the world.

their mark. “Dubai is a global destination with a deep focus on innovation and luxury,” says Jacob. “The UAE clientele is looking for a sophisticated and trendy design with the highest quality.” Clients looking for a little special something will find themselves lingering in the luxurious boutique thanks to it’s luxe Art Deco décor – think lacquered herringbone wood floors, quilted wall panels and silken fabrics. A store in Dubai is part of Jacob & Co.’s global strategy and it’s also a pretty good way to celebrate a 30th anniversary. But Jacob is most looking forward to celebrating his success a little closer to home. “My family is incredibly important to me, so an experience with my family is the greatest gift I could receive when celebrating any sort of occasion!”

MELBORNE, AUSTRALIA - 200 years of Australian Fashion The unofficial style capital of Down Under is paying homage to their top design talent with the first major survey of Australian fashion. While history buffs might delight in ogling the country’s earliest known dress (a colonial frock from 1805) and modernists might swoon at the sight of international fashion darling Dion Lee’s four-metre tall Swarovski encrusted gown, it’s the pieces from the 70s and 80s that caught our eye. If we had to choose an era in Australian fashion to hunker down in, it would be this rainbow explosion of a period, mainly due to the work of Jenny Kee and Linda Jackson. Their kaleidoscopic work could feed one’s Instagram appetite for months but it’s pieces from Flamingo Park, the eclectic Sydney boutique the duo founded in 1973, that has us aching for a time machine to take us back to the days when wearing a “tutti frutti” dress or purple toga was socially acceptable. PARIS, FRANCE - Décrayonner: Anne Valérie Hash To call the Museum of Lace and Fashion’s exhibit on Parisian couture designer Anne Valérie Hash a retrospective would be a mistake. Instead, the showcase offers fashion fans a glimpse at the designer’s perennial portfolio that celebrates her first 13 years on her own, with a promise of much more to come as she continues to build her brand. Having cut her teeth at Nina Ricci, Christian LaCroix, Chanel and Dior, the designer is now best known for her deconstructed gender-bending wares (think menswear inspired jackets with undone hems and masculine wools blended seamlessly with girly lace and tulle). For couture connoisseurs interested in the construction (or in this case, deconstruction) of a garment, this one is for you. Museum of Lace and Fashion, until November 13, 2016

LONDON, ENGLAND - Missoni: Art Colours The relationship between designer and muse is a magical one but for Missoni founders, Ottavio and Rosita, it wasn’t an individual muse that helped to inspire the signature stripes and zigzags of their Italian label. It was the work of 20th century artists including Gino Severini, Lucio Fontana and Sonia Delaunay that influenced their creative process since the brand’s inception in 1953. This exhibit brings together over 40 paintings from the aforementioned artists and more (including paintings from the Missoni family’s personal collection) plus a large line-up of looks from Missoni’s archives over the last 60 years. May we suggest you exit through the gift shop and pick up the Rizzoli-published coffee table book that accompanies the colourful exhibit. It’s a treat for the optic nerves. is heading to the Tuscan town this summer for a peek into the world of another Italian hero, Salvatore Ferragamo. The designer’s namesake museum has joined forces with four other cultural venues for a citywide exhibit that explores the relationship between art and fashion. Playing on the life story of Signore Ferragamo himself whose own appreciation for the avant-garde art movement of the 20th century resulted in a bevy of collaborations with artists of his time (including the suede mustard Ferragamo pump adorned with a target shooting motif inspired by American artist Kenneth Noland), visitors can expect other celebrated pieces of art-meets-fashion from Yves Saint Laurent’s Mondrian dress to the Andy Warhol-inspired Souper Dress silkscreened in the artist’s iconic Campbell's Soup can print.
