ditor's letter

We live in a material world. No one will argue with that. The way we each view it, though, differs considerably. What one might think of as luxury others find loathsome. SLT’s latest issue examines just that - the notion of design and what it means to us all. Leading the way is the first lady of cultural jewellery Azza Fahmy (pages 34 to 36), who has spent over 30 years bringing both Arabic and Islamic design to life. We go behind the scenes at her Cairo-based workshop to see how she uses calligraphy and filigree work to weave the most beautiful of stories into her jewellery. Speaking of materials, plush textures and loud exotic skins might sound like a recipe for anything other than quiet. Our “Hide & Seek” editorial (pages 42-47) is here to prove just the opposite of that. Camouflaged, these mother nature-inspired power pieces can also easily be tamed. After all, blending in can also be cool.

In Qatar, Evergreen Organics is going back to simplicity, turning to recycled and reclaimed wood and imperfect furniture to bring the city’s first vegan cafe to life. Meanwhile, a stone’s throw away in Kuwait, childhood friends Nur Kaoukji and Noor Al Sabah’s brand Ecru is adding eclectic bohemian flair into the city’s homes and spaces with artisan-crafted homeware. Last but definitely not least is Dubai, the emirate that is paving the way for EcoLuxury one desert sand bank at a time. Check out their new Sustainable City (pages 80-81) which is out to prove to everyone that you can live a green lifestyle without sacrificing convenience and higher-end living. Curious as to how the rest of the region’s tastemakers are living life? Our #HomeSweetHome moodboard on page 84, courtesy of our favourite Arab Insta-girls, will have you adding Pinterest-worthy touches to your place. We hope this issue opens your eyes to the world around you, sparking a new interest in looking at things in a different way. After all, design in all its forms takes on a certain kind of beauty, it’s just depends on how you approach it.

From accessories to properties, it seems the world is living “La Vie en Vert" (pages 78 to 81) with environmentally conscious developments sprouting up across the globe and as of recent, all over our region.

EYE SCANDI

When it comes to dressing yourself, your home and your little ones this season, scandi cool is a sure fire winner Words: Sophie Jones-Cooper

W

ho doesn’t love the dawn of a new season? First and foremost it means an excuse to go shopping and revamp one’s wardrobe. But this season it’s not only my style that is itching for a fresh look, my home is calling out for a design boost as well. You see, the same notion applies to our homes as it does our wardrobe. Every season we need to hit the refresh button and breathe some new life into our surroundings. And for the coming winter, there is one design style that I shall be embracing in all aspects of my lifestyle – Scandi-cool. Now my obsession, and the obsession of many a design lover right now, with everything Scandi (and by Scandi I mean that inanely cool Nordic approach to minimalistic style), is nothing new but becoming more accessible than ever. Without even trying, Scandinavia has permeated our lives. From the gripping Nordic noir crime dramas on our televisions to tasty bakes and too-cool-for-school cafes, sleek and chic minimalist housewares to colourful and print-tastic childrenswear, the Scandinavians have invaded. My wardrobe for one shall be taking on the nonchalant, laidback luxe aesthetic associated with this achingly cool Nordic style. What began back in the 60s and 70s with Finnish brand Marimekko and their now signature bold and colourful prints has since attracted a whole army of Nordic brands. Start ups from Norway, Sweden and Denmark have gathered and garnered international fame, with designer names such as by Malene Birger, Cheap Mondays, Acne Studios, & Other Stories and House of Dagmar, along with high street giants H&M and COS infiltrating our wardrobes and changing the way the world dresses. Who doesn’t love impeccable cuts and tailoring, subtle silhouettes, clean lines, luxurious fabrics, textured layers and an overall chic and minimal approach to day and evening wear. Cropped trousers, silk blouse and oversized cashmere sweater – yes please. For my mini-me’s, Scandi style is equally as adorable, if not more so, with the emphasis on comfort, cuteness, colour and of course playful prints. My little one’s Christmas lists will certainly include t-shirts, dresses and jumpers from Scandi favourites Mini Rodini, Indikidual and Gardner and the Gang. On my wish list however, are the Scandi design elements, which I hope will transform my abode into one of those laid-back, pared down

22

minimalist homes I pine after in Elle Decoration. When that Grand Designs-esque refurb isn’t an option, I have to be content with some good old scatter cushions, contemporary art and a new lick of paint for the walls. It’s goodbye magnolia and hello grey walls, top them with some stark monochrome artwork in wooden, black and white frames and add a Jacobsen egg chair to my living room and a copper globe light over my (now mid-century modern) dining table. As for soft furnishings, some obligatory pillows in Scandi-inspired geometric prints accompanied by some luxe wool throws should do the trick. And I am all set for winter, Scandi style.

MAJESTIC WINDOWS, MID-CENTURY ARCHES and grand steps as far as the eye can see. What’s not to like about gothic architecture? Be it the dramatic opulence a 400-year old building offers or the air of romantic mysticism related to the period, we’ve all been smitten by the Victorian era at some point. Simone Rocha definitely channeled hers for FW16, taking over-embellished elements and pairing them with disheveled styling for a modern feminine take on dramatic goth. Lace, velvet and rows of buttons will give you the requisite moody overtones, but if you’re not ready for full on theatrics, walk the line between the dramatic and demure and add a pair of ankle boots under a sheer dress with a slick of purple on the lips and presto - you’ve got that don’t-messwith-me attitude nailed! 1. Grab a granny, garner a geek and throw in some bold vintage WE ALL WENT MENTAL WHEN ALESSANDRO MICHELE sent out grandma-meets-hipstermeets-boho-nerd down Gucci’s SS16 runway, but what made it so perfectly quirky had to be the matching kitsch era décor. Yes, there was no escaping the retro room dividers in swirling bold prints or the giant floral printed carpet with Gucci’s signature snake slithering down it. Loud, flashy and oh-so-much fun, it’s made us all want to cavort in flares and fringe amidst kidney-shaped coffee tables and avocado green Eames Lounge Chairs.

Known to most as the first lady of cultural jewellery, Azza Fahmy has spent over 45 years immortalising a heritage that is beautiful, mesmerising and rich, weaving Arabic history into pendants, necklaces and earrings. Influenced by past and present cultures, she has taken calligraphy and global motifs and turned them into what can only be described as ‘pieces of art’. For FW16, the Egyptian jeweller takes us behind the scenes to discover the brand’s new Talisman collection and why she considers it her most charming one yet.

OUR USE OF CALLIGRAPHY HAS BECOME AN ICONIC FEATURE...… of the Azza Fahmy Jewellery design philosophy, and is one of the tools we use to celebrate various cultures usually drawn from a piece of music, a verse from a poem or even a proverb. Some of our pieces have featured love lyrics from Umm Kulthum’s music as well as verses from Kahlil Gibran’s poetry. For the Talisman collection, you will find a lot of these proverbs and calligraphy evident in some of the pieces. AZZA FAHMY JEWELLERY RELATES TO EVERY WOMAN... a woman who appreciates arts and culture. Our pieces have a global appeal, and every piece has a story that people can connect to.

Azza Fahmy

Jewellery can be

found at Fifty One

East, Lagoona Mall. Qatar

EVERY YEAR WE ARE INSPIRED BY A DIFFERENT CULTURAL THEME... and from there we combine our research methods into creating a collection that tells a different story each time. This October we decided to pay tribute to Talismans. Together with my design team of 22 – we researched the meanings and perception behind each Talisman throughout various cultures around the world, in present and in history. It took us 18 months of constant research and work to create the collection it is today. TALISMANS ARE WORLD SYMBOLS... that anyone can relate to. Translating the meanings and heritage behind the symbols in contemporary pieces is at the heart of what we do, and is what we aim to do with this collection.

THE COLLECTION ITSELF TOOK 18 MONTHS... in the making, from inspiration to research, to come to life. With every collection, each piece presents us with a new design challenge, be it creative or technical. The Papyrus cuff presented a technical challenge for us - we had to come up with a new clasping mechanism for our cuffs. We wanted to create something more comfortable and user friendly. We took this challenge as an opportunity to do so. Another challenge we faced was creating the eye and fish ring in terms of design and sketching. Creating this ring allowed us to widen our design envelope to bring out and highlight four different symbols in one piece - The Fish, The Eye of Horus, The Coin in Hand and the calligraphy. I ENJOYED WORKING ON ALL THE PIECES... What I loved though, that we did differently this time, is that every piece was created to combine more than one talisman that is of more than one inspiration. For example our Papyrus cuff combines three symbols - the Papyrus, Lotus and Hand of Fatima.

THE NUMBER OF PIECES WE MAKE VARY...… based on the theme, size and seasonality of the collection. With this collection we wanted to make sure that the 10 Talismanic worldwide symbols that we researched and collected such as the Lotus, Papyrus and Seal of Solomon were included in a way that complement each other featured in the 13-piece collection.

hen you can count Jennifer Lopez, Kate Hudson and Taylor Swift amongst your legion of fans, we’d say you’ve made it in terms of celebrity blessings. But for Paper London’s Creative Director Kelly Townsend, there’s one style icon that she wishes she could add to her roster of clients - Talitha Getty. The late Dutch actress and unofficial figurehead of the bohemian spirit of the 1960s remains a continual muse for the designer. “She got married in Morocco and I got married in Morocco - I just love her sense of style,” says the Central Saint Martins grad. Fair enough considering there are quite a few pieces from Paper London’s Resort 2017 collection that seem right up Talitha’s alley, including the billowing halter maxi dress sans waistline and the indigo tie front jumpsuit. In five short years, Paper London has catapulted into the brand to buy for women with a discerning eye and an affinity for oversized sculptural shapes that flatter as they float effortlessly over the skin. Bodycon dresses these are not. Much of the credit is due to the Temperley London alum’s understanding of both the female form and what type of wool blend to use when creating a ruffle that needs structure without appearing stiff. Here, SLT sits down with Ms. Townsend to talk resort dressing, the most inspirational place in London and swimwear that you’ll actually want to try on.

CULTURE

I really want to build more on the swimwear side of things. When you wear a good swimsuit it really makes you feel great. I’ve learned a lot, for example how a really simple thing like the cut of a leg, just a few millimeters can make such a huge difference in how big your bum looks or how long your legs look. You’ve just got to get that little bit right. CRITICS AND CUSTOMERS ALIKE LOVE YOUR OVERSIZED DESIGNS. HOW DO YOU CREATE PIECES THAT ARE STILL FEMININE AND FLATTERING? There is a fine balance between looking like a child in an oversized dress and making something that fits well. We make bold shapes but always highlight your narrowest part, for example well fitting shoulders or a wide leg that is just wide enough to be flattering to any waist size with the trapeze shape. And the other secret is not too much fabric! Paper London is available at Per Lei Couture in Doha, Qatar..

TELL US ABOUT PAPER LONDON’S RESORT 2017 COLLECTION. The fresh blue hues and rippling silk stripes take their lead from French waterside photography of the 1930's. Lee Miller, Man Ray, Jacques Henri Lartigue and Renee Perle inspire the dreamlike, tranquil and insouciant mood. Fresh white cotton, deck chair stripes, hot magenta folds, sunlit denim, and picnic gingham come together in a breezy blend of pattern and texture. Balloon sleeves, bandeau necklines, soft frills and structured folds are incorporated. We’ve kept it really light in terms of fabrication so loads of silks - silk drills, printed silk and silk taffeta which holds its form and is really forgiving on the body. And we used a really lovely Japanese weave from silk, linen and cotton blend and it’s really luxurious. My favourite piece is the striped knot top and balloon trousers. I can’t wait to wear them on warm summer days. www.paperlondon.com

l

HOW DID PAPER LONDON START? We started five years ago. Phillipa and I met through our husbands, well, boyfriends at the time. She was a lawyer, in corporate law but she really loved fashion and I was working at Temperley London at the time, I was a knitwear designer there and we became friends and over the course of a year or about eighteen months, she got more and more into the idea of starting a brand and it sort of snowballed from there. I picked the name “paper” because it’s a clean, blank canvas and there is nothing to it and that’s what I wanted to start with. AND HOW DOES LONDON COME INTO PLAY? I’ve lived here for a long time, 15 years or so and I think everyday going into the city, it is an amazing cultural mix of colours, people and clothes. People here have a real original style and they aren’t afraid to try things and that’s what I love about the English way of dabbling in fashion. But the landscape as well. I love the galleries, especially the Tate Modern and I love going to Central Saint Martin’s library. I still go there a lot because I find it such an inspirational and creative place. Whenever I start a collection that’s where I go. We go through the old periodicals and look around at what the crazy kids are wearing. It makes you feel old but it’s very inspiring. WHY DO YOU THINK MIDDLE EASTERN CUSTOMERS ARE DRAWN TO PAPER LONDON? I think the light fabrications and mixture of fabrications is what works. I try to always add in a flattering jumpsuit that is forgiving on most figures and it’s great for the evening. And the boldness of our brand. Our colour and bold silhouette just work.

WHAT IS YOUR DESIGN APPROACH WHEN IT COMES TO THE SWIMWEAR IN THE COLLECTION? I really think about myself and what I want to wear. Something that is flattering but interesting. I mean, you aren’t going to be able to swim the Channel in them but they can be worn as a top with jean shorts, they’re very versatile and can double up as clothing.

WHOM WOULD YOU LOVE TO DRESS? I’m a big fan of the late Talitha Getty. She has always been my star muse. She was married to Jean Paul Getty in the 70s and she died very young. I also love people like Debbie Harry and Grace Jones, so quite strong fierce women.

VAN CLEEF & ARPELS’ DUBAI MALL BOUTIQUE GETS A MAKEOVER COURTESY OF ARTIST SHEIKHA WAFA BINT HASHER AL MAKTOUM AND THE RESULTS ARE ANYTHING BUT GARDEN VARIETY

40

l

VISITORS TO VAN CLEEF& ARPELS’ Dubai Mall boutique were treated to a visual feast this Eid and we’re not just talking about the sparkling diamonds and baubles on display. In celebration of the Holy occasion, the French jewellery house partnered with artist and founder of art and design studio FN Designs, Sheikha Wafa Bint Hasher Al Maktoum on an ephemeral window animation that celebrates nature, or more specifically, the lotus flower. Native to the Middle East and of particular significance in the region to Egypt and Iran, the lotus is a symbol of beauty, purity and accomplishment and on this occasion, symbolises a new beginning, or as the iconic jeweller has dubbed the collaboration, Blissful Utopia. What better emblem for Eid? “The Van Cleef & Arpels maison looks at nature very closely. As for me, as an artist

. sur la terre . style .

www.vancleefarpelscom

and designer, I look at shapes and colours,” Sheikha Wafa explains to Sur La Terre. “I was inspired by the shape and form of the lotus broche, and the simple yet beautiful design of it. I merged my personal style of repeated patterns when I created the window design.” Known for her use of metal, the artist transformed the boutique’s façade by engraving lotus patterns onto a garden-like gate, creating an arabesque look. Transparent confetti-like lotus petals and buds dotted the windows, forming subtle plays of light. The light of Dubai that surrounds Sheikha Wafa on a daily basis also plays a role in her creativeness. “My country, the UAE is my inspiration,” she says. “Inspiration is all around me.” This appreciation

for the world at large seems to be a theme for the multi-media artist who holds a degree in Business Administration and has a Bachelor’s degree in Arts and Design. Having already participated in over 50 exhibitions as an artist, and curated over 15 exhibitions, in addition to a recent collaboration with Burj Al Arab Jumeirah, Madinat Jumeirah and Jumeirah Beach Hotel on kitting out their golf buggies, Sheikha Wafa is eternally humble about her talent. When asked about the biggest moments in her career to date, her response is succinct yet telling. “Everything is special; there is not a moment or a piece. All my life is a process to where I am now and for future growth.” It seems new beginnings extend past the artwork and into the artist.

WHAT TO EXPECT BEFORE AND AFTER THE BIG SCRUB

A

modern take on the Islamic-style hammam that leaves the bather feeling refreshed, light and years younger. Upon entering the Kempinski Marsa Malaz's hammam, a comfortable marbleand-tile steam room, bathers are left to rest alone for quiet introspection, while warm steam soaks into the body. A spa therapist later performs a seriously deep scrub before rinsing off the skin with warm water stored in beautiful wooden vessels, and then lathering it up again with loofahs, soap, and lastly a soft mud mask for the body. Guests literally shed their old skin and step into new skin that looks and feels firm and vibrant. For the last stage, bathers are moved to the massage room to shower off and prepare for a light, head-to-toe rub. The treatment is a must for those in need of restorative therapy for the body or a simple fresh start. Staff were attentive and one step ahead of guests' needs. www.kempinski.com

WHAT ELECTRONIC DEVICE CAN’T YOU LIVE WITHOUT? Of course without any questions I have to say my IPhone 7. It has an amazing camera and is perfect for my social media needs.

If you’re a fan of surrealist art why not tote it on your luggage as you jet set around the world? Making art lovers’ lucid dreams come true is Samsonite who have launched two Cosmolite Limited Editions (the brand’s best-selling model) inspired by the art of René Magritte.

SOCIAL MEDIA – LOVE IT OR HATE IT? Absolutely love it! Social media is a platform that has been able to put every talent and artist in the spotlight. This is something that has not been done before. We are now able to see more, discover more and brands are ultimately elevated. WHAT IS THE DIGITAL TRAIT YOU HATE MOST IN OTHERS? I hate when people post every single thing they do, OR eat!

CAR COVETS IT MIGHT HAVE SOLD OUT IN THE SEVEN DAYS following its unveiling at the Goodwood Revival, but we still can’t get the Caterham’s Seven Sprint retro model out of her head. Taking its design cues from a 1960s vehicle that never saw the light of day, this British roadster is packed to the gills with style, from chrome hubcaps to a crimson red interior that would make even the strongest of hearts melt. www.caterhamcars.com

HOW DIGITALLY ACTIVE ARE YOU DAILY? I am constantly on Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp and of course emails – I am always sending those out! DO YOU EVER UNPLUG? I would love to, it would be a dream, but it’s impossible. I have so many people relying on me it would be irresponsible. I must always have one phone on incase of emergencies for the people I love. WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT THE DIGITAL AGE? I would say picture sharing. If you have a loved one who is far away picture sharing is so beautiful, it allows you to be with them in that moment of time.

The pop star has opened up his 900-acre 16th century estate, Villa il Palagio, near Florence, renting out six of the guesthouses sleeping 50 people. With access to a recording studio, yoga centre and vino cellar, this has to be the ultimate party pad. www.palagioproducts.com

NEW YORK There aren’t many things New York doesn’t lay claim to, especially in the foodie department. But until now, if you wanted to tuck into a perfectly cooked CUT by Wolfgang Puck steak, you would have to book a table in Beverley Hills, Singapore or London. FOURTH STOP...

Florence

The cradle of the Renaissance, the pumping heart of Tuscany and possibly one of the greatest art cities in the world, Firenze has made everyone who walks its streets weak at the knees. How best to explore it? Although your guide book might suggest the popular sites, do like the locals and avoid the tourist traps with our the top three Florentine mustsees below: PITTI PALACE: Once home to the Medici family, this grandiose Palazzo houses some of the most important museums in Florence with famous works by Tintoretto, Botticelli and several works by Raphael. SAN MINIATO: Located high on a hill overlooking the Arno (the views alone make the hike well worth it) this might perhaps be Florence’s most mystical church. Try and make the trip so that you arrive in the early evening hours, when monks slip into the crypt of St. Minias to sing the mass in Latin.

HOTEL CRUSH – BELMOND VILLA SAN MICHELE A feast for the eyes, this Renaissance gem nestled deep in the lush trees of Fiesole is a rarified, shimmering beauty. With a facade attributed to Michelangelo and beautifully manicured terraced gardens, it’s easy to see why this is one of Europe’s most noteworthy hotels.

FIFTH STOP...

GIARDINO BARDINI: This might be one of the city’s lesser-known gardens, but its stunning terraces offer some of the most extraordinary views over Florence. It’s packed on the weekends with locals who come to escape the more touristy gardens. (3)

CALLING ALL FASHIONISTAS… Forget about Milan, if you want to delve deep into Italian moda this is the city to turn to. Show up during PITTI UOMO (1), the bi-annual menswear trade show, and you’re in for a treat as Italy’s sartorially-inclined crowd hit the streets dressed to the nines. For those who feel like brushing up on their Florentine fashion knowledge a quick stop at the GUCCI MUSEUM (2) is a must, follow that by a delicious aperol at the adjacent café and a quick stop at (2) the in-house Rizzoli bookshop, where browsing is a must. A short distance away, between the Duomo and the Piazza della Repubblica, is LUISA VIA ROMA (3) one of Europe’s hottest concept boutiques. And where you’re bound to find the coolest limited edition designer pieces to take back and show off.

SIXTH STOP...

COME HERE FOR 1- THE PALIO: a bareback horse race held every summer at café-lined Piazza del Campo 2- PIAZZA DEL DUOMO: whose candy-striped façade makes for Instagram worthy snaps

WHAT MAKES THIS SMALL WALLED MEDIEVAL hill town different than the rest? Well other than the superb frescos at the Duomo di San Gimignano, the town is home to the award-winning artisan ice cream parlour owned by Sergio Dondoli. Famous for his unusual creations, it’s worth making the trip just for the Raspberry and Rosemary sorbet or if you’re feeling a bit adventurous try the Crema di Santa Fina (cream with saffron and pine nuts). You’ll thank us for this!

3- SIENA JAZZ FESTIVAL: a summer series of concerts, jam sessions and the most interesting music Tuscany has to offer.

A GRAND OLD TIME The glamour of the 1920s comes to life with sleek modern flair in Starwood’s newly reopened Sheraton Grand London Park Lane. Words: Angela Simaan

Decades ago,

during the Second World War, London’s fashionable set would gather at the Park Lane Hotel to dine and dance the night away in the gleaming underground ballroom that doubles as a bomb shelter. With magnificent palladium-painted walls four feet thick, and the elegant hallmarks of Art Deco throughout the design, the ballroom was no less fabulous a setting for the safety it offered. After a two-year, extensive revamp, the Sheraton Grand London Park Lane, set in the heart of Mayfair and across from Green Park and Buckingham Palace, is once again one of the city’s most elegant addresses for both travellers and locals alike. Initially opened in 1927, at the peak of the Roaring Twenties, the hotel reopened in October after a head-totoe multi-million pound refurbishment by London firm MKV Design. Throughout the hotel, modern touches of luxury have been thoughtfully paired with careful restoration of the original Art Deco designs that made this Mayfair locale a hotspot. In the restored part of the hotel, original murals from the period still adorn part of the Silver Gallery walls that lead down to the Ballroom, the light fixtures and intricate, curling stair railings are originals rewired and restored, and the gorgeous

PALM COURT LOUNGE (pictured left, above and main) is the heart of the hotel. Set between the main entrance and the back of the building, which faces Piccadilly overlooking Green Park, visitors and guests pass the Lounge’s stained glass ceilings and sleek furniture multiple times a day, creating a lively and convivial hub for the hotel. Afternoon tea, dinner and cocktails are served.

MERCANTE (above): A new Italian food market concept headed by Chef Davide D’Ignazio, Mercante’s fresh fare is sourced directly from London supplier Natoora. Chef Davide crafts the menu based on seasonal ingredients, and each dish is influenced by regional specialties and traditional homespun recipes.

Ballroom has served as the set for films like The Danish Girl, Florence Foster Jenkins, and The Infiltrator because of its historical accuracy.

SMITH & WHISTLE (above): Also facing Picadilly, Smith & Whistle is where the locals hang out after work to catch up with friends. Craft food and beverage are on offer in the bar/restaurant, which features a gorgeous copper pipe installation on one wall. The pipes are original fixtures sourced materials salvaged from the hotel’s refurbishment. Open late daily.

On the renovated side of the hotel, deliberate touches throughout the design pay homage to the origins of the establishment. In the guest rooms, the bedside light fixtures are replicas of those in Coco Chanel’s 1920s Paris apartment, and gleaming chrome lamps and objet d’art add modern takes on the materials of the Twenties. In the public spaces, a sharp eye will catch the subtle, sophisticated elements of contemporary luxury. The air conditioning vents have been specially crafted to replicate the Art Deco-era registers in the restored half of the building; the lighting throughout has the delicate brilliance of chandeliers; and the greens and lavender hues of the age have been applied with an updated outlook to the hotel’s color palette.

HAVEN hat's impossible to know, is that subtely hidden along a winding road of Tangalle, sprinkled with hooting tuktuks and a plethora of wandering cows, is a concealed entrance that hides Sri Lanka's first major international luxury resort, the Anantara Peace Haven Resort. Pulling in to the resort brings a sense of arriving at a VIP red carpet event. Instead of flashing camera bulbs however, metal frame-work lights woven in coconut hair give a natural yet cool low lit ambience leading to heavy wood doors flanked by large columns. Red carpet gives way for a more natural

over-water wood slatted walkway, extending in to an open air pavillion reception synonomous with Anantara resorts the world over. Meanwhile the paparazzi is replaced with a lone man in traditional Sri Lankan dress bearing a conch shell, blowing a low rythmic signal heralding the arrival of guests. The impact of the resort, best viewed from the elevated open veranda of the Lobby Lounge draws the eye to the impossibly tall coconut trees, some of which reach an impressive 20 metres. With a soundtrack of crashing waves agasinst rock and cliff, this extensive yet intimately private southern Sri Lankan resort spans 21 acres positioned on an area of jagged rocky outcrop and beautifully secluded beachfront.

Making good use of this unique coastal setting, impressive lawns and an array of delicately planted trees, including species such as Great Frangipani, Sea Almond, Pink Tecoma, Flame of the Forest and Sri Lanka's notorious Breadfruit tree, form a lucious backdrop for the whole resort. A stunning 25-metre double level lap pool which includes in-water sun loungers perched on a shallow water shelf along one edge of the pool, serve as a relaxing toe-dip and cool down spot. The beach meanwhile spills out in to the Indian Ocean and would make even Leonardo Di Caprio (Ă la The Beach) rethink his idea of the perfect secluded stretch of sand and sea.

Reception at the Anantara Peace Haven Tangalle Resort

Nothing says "YOU'VE ARRIVED" like chartering a PRIVATE PLANE OR HELIOPTER. but if that seems a little excessive by way of turning up to the ANANTARA PEACE HAVEN then you could grab a 40-MINUTE SEA-PLANE flight from Bandaranaike International Airport to Mawella Lagoon, Dickwella, or take a scenic 4-hours drive along the Expressway in the resort’s LUXURY ECO-FRIENDLY HYBRID SUV

The living areas are as impressive as their surroundings, 32 stunning one and two bedroom villas accessible by path or E-tuk (eco-friendly tuk-tuk) in a secluded area of the resort. Here you can throw open the sliding doors to your very own outdoor dining space and deck complete with sun loungers, or immerse yourself in the plunge pool and listen to the dramatic ocean waves from the beach just a stones throw away. Inside, rooms are furnished with custom locally made Sri Lankan hand woven chairs. Sofas, day-beds, large marble-walled bathrooms and s Bose sound system effortlessly blend to create a tropcially airy sanctuary. Also overlooking the gardens, pool and beach are three low rise buildings housing 120 elegant, thoughtfully and luxuriously designed Premiere and Deluxe bedrooms. Glass fronted balconies accented with daybeds and dining space to kick back and relax on give uninterupted pool and ocean views, whilst the ground floor garden view rooms have open terraces spilling out on to lush grass. Delicate cream walls combined with teak wood sliding doors and polished cement floors keep everything cool inside the rooms, and the in-room beach bag and flipflops add that personal touch. For extra opulence a huge floor to ceiling window separates the bedroom and bathroom which includes rain shower, oval bathtub and twin sinks.

Dotted along the edge of the beachfront gardens sit chic white canopied cabanas nestled under the cover of palm trees gently swaying in the sea breeze. An added touch of je ne sais quoi comes in the form of complimentary baskets containing sun-cream, flipflops, cool bottled water, fresh fruit and a dedicated 'Sunshine Butler' which only serves to enhance this beautifully discreet area. Lizards, squirrels, birds and peacocks (expect to see several peacocks) wander the resort daily, whilst King Coconuts are regularly brought round the pool and beach area providing a naturally fresh and healthy hydrating drink for those sultry Sri Lankan days.

Surf Lanka...

Left: The Dutch Fort Hospital Shopping Precinct at the Galle Fort in Galle. Below: Dining by Design beachside, and Anantara's spa relaxing area.

In case you haven't heard, Sri Lankans like to surf. On the south coast of this tropical island, stretching from Galle to Tangalle the choice of beaches on offer bring wave riders the world over. Miles of open water, cliffs, rocks and reefs play host to swells for beginner and pro's alike, which means you can get waxing down that surfboard and you don't have to wait until June. November to March offer smoother, calmer waves, where as April to October produce bigger swells. And no, you don't need a bushy blonde hairdo, all you need is some get up and go. Experienced instructors from THE ANANTARA SURF CENTRE BY TROPICSURF are on site to give tuition for one-to-one, family or groups year round. A nearby secluded lagoon only a ten minute drive away, offers waves that are rookie friendly and ensure that paddling out and getting up on that board is (practically) a given during a two hour session. For those who see themselves a bit of a Kelly Slater or Laird Hamilton, Tropicsurf also arrange a wide selection of surfari's to seek out Sri Lanka's perfect waves. It's not just surfing either, you can turn your hand to the equally on-trend SUP (stand up paddle boarding) phenomenon for those who want an all-over body workout on the water. Top tip: A personal touch means small group sizes (a maximum of four) so book in advance!

Hip History Calling all culture vultures , history buffs and generally inquisitive people. A two hour drive from Tangalle, THE GALLE FORT which covers an astonishing 36-hectares, remains one of Sri Lanka's most popular UNESCO World Heritage sites. Built by the Dutch in 1663, the best way to explore this historic site is to sign up for the GALLE FORT WALK. Tour guide Shanjei, a fantastically friendly bearded ex-advertising executive, demonstrates an impressive knowledge imparted through story telling and anecdotal facts bringing limitless energy and insight. A noteable stop should be made at the impressively chic DUTCH HOSPITAL SHOPPING PRECINCT, which, after having fallen in to a state of disrepair, has now been rennovated and converted in to a stunning upscale boutique shopping and dining spot ideal for picking

spot outside under the stars whilst tantalising your tastebubs on breads served with fresh sundried tomato and baked garlic entrees, indulge in a starter of succulent tuna tartar followed by a main course of seared red snapper with baby potatoes and carrots and aspargus. Afterwards, sit back and relax - there is no other place like it. By the sea, nothing says romance more than Anantara's 'Dining By Design' ethos. You select the setting of choice whether it be a candle lit beach front dinner, a cosy picnic on the sand or a dramatic cliff top meal. Choose from one of the seven menus or even collaborate with the chef to create a bespoke menu. Sample the seafood selection, where lobster spring rolls and jumbo prawn tom yam start proceedings. After which an unforgettable duo of tomato and lemon sorbets are served to cleanse the palette, followed by a medly of lobster, tuna, king fish and calamari are cooked to perfection. All this whilst you are attended to by your own butler - life doesn't get much better! The unique beachside venue Verele offers fresh seafood and meat dishes based on a tasty combination inspired by Sri Lankan and teppanyaki cuisine in an awesome setting.

up local crafts, spices, jewellery and gems. The Fort is home to an abundance of stunning colonial architectural features and is still a working area that is home to a maritime museum, luxury hotel, administative offices, battlements, beach and a gargantuan 500-year old Banyan tree, meaning a tour of this magnificent citadel is definitely one for the to-do list.

www.gallefortwalks.com Surfin' Surfari: North and south, east and west, rock and reef make Sri Lanka a wave rider's heaven

Very few resorts offer land, sea and clifftop dining locations in one place, Peace Haven ticks all the boxes. On land you can eat inside or out on the patio at Journeys overlooking the gardens and swimming pool, watching as the chefs demonstrate their skills in an open kitchen. For a taste of the high life harking back to a time of the Ceylon colonial era, throw on your afternoon tea finest and head to The Lobby Lounge where moorish scones accompanied by delicious jams are served daily with boutique and single estate teas from the highlands. If possible, restrain from over indulgence so you can head out later for dinner and experience Peace Haven's cliff edge dining! Dinner doesn't get more dramatic than the sound of the Indian Ocean crashing against the rocks below, which gives Il Mare the distinction of being the most prestigeous place to dine. With local fishermen bringing their catch to the beach, the creative chefs cook culinary taste sensations as awesome as the setting itself. Book the corner cabana

Sri Lanka, from culture to nature, is impressively diverse and is a proud host to eight world heritage sites that are worth tearing yourself away for. The resort, positioned at the southern tip of the country, is approximately 30 minutes from the end of the Southern Expressway which makes for a convenient striking distance to several must-see attractions. Head out for a days sojourn to see elephants, monkeys, crocodiles, peacocks, and if you're lucky, leopards at the Yala National Park. Or spend a morning at the heartwarming Uda Walawe Elephant Sanctuary where feeding time is something not to miss. Out on the water blue back whale and dolphin spotting is worth the early morning wake-up call or for some seriously epic views head to Mulkirigala Rock Temple. If, like us, inner peace comes in the form of a spa day, then say hello to a little peace of haven at the Anantara Spa. Where, alongside traditional techniques and therapies from Sri Lanka and Asia, oils and resort garden grown herbs create a spa menu packed with personally prescribed facials, massages, wraps and scrubs. Post pampering, retreat to the comfy loungers opposite bubbling water features under a canvas canopy surrounded by super-sized metal urns to complete the mind and body overhaul. www.tangalle.anantara.com

FOR THOSE WHO THINK VEGAN FOOD IS...

You don’t need to give up burgers after all!

It might be the difficult for die hard carnivores to say sayonara to meat, but when a veggie burger looks this good (pictured above) it’ll be hard to pick up anything else after. This bad boy comes served ina whle grain bun or between lettuce leaves, topped with sautéed onions, a side of crisp sweet potato fries and the sickest homemade goji beet ketchup. GOING RAW GHANIM AL SULAITI on Veganism, NASA approved plants and why Evergreen Organics’ almond butter kimchi sandwiches are the new PB&J THE WHOLE IDEA STARTED FROM.. . a place of consciousness. I went through a learning experience, travelling, reading meeting people… Then one day I was watching Good Morning America and this author came out on talking about her new book, about healthy food and how food can change the way you look, the way you feel. This is what started it all. FOR ME FOOD HAD ALWAYS BEEN...just fuel – you just eat it to survive rather than eat it to change something. I got to a place where I thought that something that she was saying was true. THE CAFÉ WORKS WITH...small suppliers here and there and that’s the most challenging thing. We have three to four farms in Doha, two other in Dubai, one from Saudi and another from Lebanon. The rest we source from around the world, but we try our best to stick to the region. I DON’T THINK VEGANISM...is for

everyone. I don’t think you should do it just for the sake of being a vegan; you should do it because you believe in it. I believe in wholefoods, in the real thing, how it all came to be from nature. WE WENT BACK TO NATURE...with the interiors – back to simplicity and to imperfect products. It was a challenge. All the wood is recycled or reclaimed. A local company made us the furniture. The cushions are all natural dyed; the lights are made from coconut shells. THE AIR QUALITY HERE...is the best you will get in Doha. You see all of our plants are real and we even have two living plant walls made up of 800 plants which NASA has proved produce the most oxygen! EVERYDAY I HAVE A DIFFERENT DISH... Lately it’s been the almond butter kimchi sandwich that our incredible chef Matt Dowens’ added to the menu. It’s his take on one of his childhood favourites, PB&J.

FAMOUS VEGANS Looking for some celebrity inspo to get you motivated, here are three famous faces who live the vegan life STEVIE WONDER “I like not eating meat."

JESSICA CHASTAIN “I’m a vegan. I don’t want to torture anything. I guess it’s about trying to live a life where I’m not contributing to the cruelty in the world.” PETER DINKLAGE “By buying meat, eggs, and dairy products, you’re paying for cruelty.”

I FEEL INTERNALLY DIFFERENT, YES OF COURSE THERE ARE A LOT OF OUTER CHANGES THAT HAVE BEEN AWESOME, BUT THE MOST IMPORTANT IS I FEEL AMAZING.

Childhood friends Nur Kaoukji and Noor Al Sabah are taking the interior design world by storm with Ecru, the Kuwait-based brand of artisancrafted luxury home products in a kaleidoscope of bold hues and inyour-face prints. For the duo, mixing business with pleasure is definitely the secret to success.

hat do you get when you mix two best friends, one with a background in precious gems and handicraft, the other a retail fashion buyer, both with a serious passion for interior design? An explosion of colours, prints and a dizzying array of homeware that will have you seriously second-guessing every plain white vase and print-less pillowcase you’ve ever brought home. Welcome to Ecru, the Kuwait-based home and lifestyle brand from friends Nur Kaoukji, a Lebanese-born designer and handicraft expert and Noor Al-Sabah, the fashion director for powerhouse Kuwaiti retailer Al-Othman. The pair source most of their products from Jaipur, India where Nur spends half the year working with local artisans on their hand block-printed pillowcases, psychedelic woven rugs and hand dyed paper products. SLT sat down with the dynamic duo to find out more about their production process, top design tips and the secret to staying friends through it all. www.ecruonline.com HOW DID ECRU BEGIN? Nur: Noor and I have always been each other’s support system. We had different careers running parallel, Noor was deep in a fashion career, and I in the world of Jaipuri artisana and at one point we decided we had to cross paths. The idea was to have a brand that catered to our aesthetics, to what we really felt like owning. Staple pieces that we could play with when hosting or just admire. Noor: We decided to take on the expression of homeware because it is something we both love and it is not fleeting such as fashion - it is how you choose to live day to day HOW AND WHERE DO YOU SOURCE YOUR PRODUCTS AND PRINTS? Noor: All of our prints are designed by us and blockprinted by wonderful artisans in Jaipur. As for our other items, we design them all and work with craftmen from Sri Lanka, India and Lebanon to execute our vision. Nur: Our latest edition to the ecru team is Nada Dalloul, a talented illustrator, who has sped up the print making process ten fold. Before her I was photocopying and hand tracing repetitions. She’s brought us into the 21st century! HOW DO YOU KNOW WHEN A PRODUCT IS RIGHT TO SELL AT ECRU? Nur: Retail is always a gamble. But when I see a particular glimmer in Noor’s eye, and the product makes my heart pump, and the girls in the team can’t wait to get a hold of it, I know we’ve made a good decision. Noor: Generally when one of us feel as though “How could we have ever lived without it?” makes us quite confident that it will be well received. HOW DO YOU HOPE SHOPPERS FEEL AT ECRU? Nur: Inspired. I’m not a person who loves to shop. What I do love is an experience. There are certain shops, specifically in Paris, that are forever imprinted in my memory. Having a certain smell, or beautifully decorated, well curated with knowledgeable staff. An experience that leaves you feeling inspired. I hope for that. WHAT DESIGN PHILOSOPHIES DO YOU LIVE BY? Nur: Avoid trend or what you think would please viewers. Please yourself, genuine design is the best design. Surround yourself with pieces that ignite beautiful memories. And never hurry. Slowly collect, and only collect what you feel truly speaks to you. THE BEST & WORST PART OF RUNNING A BUSINESS WITH A FRIEND IS... Noor: The best part is having an unwavering support system that compliments your aesthetic. The hardest part would be learning very fast how to separate business opinions with personal stances. Nur: Noor isn’t just any friend, this is essentially a family business. For me the best part is that work doesn’t feel like work, its too much fun and feels ntural. The difficulty I find is switching off and separating work from pleasure. We also tend to never stop talking about it. In retrospect, it may be more difficult for others around us!

Some Like it Raw...

Qatar gets it's first taste of the raw food craze courtesy of the st.regis doha

I

t comes as no surprise that the city’s first oyster bar just happens to have opened at the city’s most coveted food destination, St. Regis Doha. The tiny, no reservations hotspot houses a circular bar with just 11 stools, perfect for solo dining or an intimate catch up with a friend. Warm lighting and sweet mellow tunes keep the bar humming, but the real action unfolds over the counter where Chef Elias Gemayel brings a creative flair and inventiveness to raw cuisine. All you have to do is park yourself on a bar stool and let him work his magic, because when he does seafood, you better believe he does it right. If you’re serious about oysters, Chef Elias stocks the city’s best selection culled all the way from France and the Netherlands. They’re delicious, unpretentious and surprisingly light meaning you’ll easily slurp down a dozen of these beauties without noticing. The Mediterranean-inspired menu is also full of hits, from the homemade cured salmon gravlax with pink peppercorn to the scallop ceviche and tuna tataki; the sushi and sashimi offerings are just as tempting and equally delicious. Remember whatever you do though, don’t say no to their tempting cocktail list; the mango and jalapeno mojito or their punchy pisco sour are the perfect compliments to the end of your meal. Salut!

self-described ‘minimalist by nature’, Lebanese-born, LA-based designer Lamia Maalouf is the go-to girl for pretty interiors – from jaw-droppingly beautiful homes to commercial spaces you’d want to leave your job for. With a roster of Pinterest-worthy projects around the globe, she heads the design half of interior design and structural engineering firm MI Design alongside her partner and brother Sami Maalouf. “I wanted to be an interior designer ever since I was 5 years old,” she recalls, “The design world has always moved me and I can’t but see myself as an interior designer.” She has successfully managed to set herself apart in an industry which is as competitive as it is beautiful, her designs a pastiche of her inspirations juxtaposing eclectic traditional with contemporary cool, often juggling between her original roots and the new ones she has created for herself. “Having spent half of my life in the Middle East, half of it in the West, and constantly travelling back and forth in between both places, I find it extremely beneficial that I understand well both cultures and can cater to both tastes.” And her work definitely speaks for itself. www.midesigncorp.com

Perhaps the aspiring collector leans to traditional forms of art – the notion of history and culture ringing true to their inclinations. odd Levin, an art advisor based in New York, compared the art world to an iceberg. “Only 10 percent is showing, and I search mostly underwater,” he said in his interview with Blouin Art Info. This means that all is not lost when you can’t find the perfect piece. There are a number of art advisors who are willing to go to greater lengths in search for the perfect artwork for their highly valued clients. The process of buying art can be a little intimidating. Especially for a new collector, they might not know where to start! Many of our now-turned art collectors had to start somewhere, baby steps! EMERGEAST was born as a platform to cater to the young collector. Nothing makes us more happy than to educate young art enthusiasts and to guide them to the perfect artwork! It is often a daunting task to figure out what style they like, where to look, how much to spend on an artist and what’s #trending. Perhaps they just want to have fun with their art acquisitions that will still have a place in an esteemed collection down the line. This is where we come in!

Anas Homsi, Acrylic on canvas, 125x125cm, $3,500

Take Anas Homsi for example, a Syrian refugee who has fled his native land in search of refuge and peace. The Syrian artists signature brushstroke has began to make waves beyond the regional art scene, taking him to Berlin where his poignant abstract portraiture is making an impression across various collections.

Farbod Mehr, Digital collage on paper, 30x40cm, $300

Rabee Baghshani, Digital collage on canvas (edition of 5), 100x80cm, $450

Iranian artist, is disseminating her rich digital compilations to the wider Middle East and beyond straight our of her studio in Mahad.Increasingly, Middle Eastern artists have been utilizing the digital realm to manifest and materialise their creations – often a compilation of East meets West themes resulting into engaging artworks. Despite the reproduction abilities computer generated works may offer, each artist will limit their production of editions (tip: the lesser the editions the better - they’re more valuable).

THE ART OF COLLECTING: NO MYSTERIOUS FEAT WHY BUY ART? Buying a piece of art is a reflection of you. Whether it stirs sadness, joy, identity, a diaspora or comical value, it's yours to share with others around you and a day-to-day reminder of a small piece of who you are and what you liked. Tuning into the Middle Eastern art scene around us gives access to dynamic reflections of powerful contemporary themes taking place in this shifting region. HOW DO I KNOW WHAT I LIKE? Half of the fun lies in finding out what you like through gallery visits, fairs, shows and museums. It's a slow but gratifying process indeed until you find that piece that speaks to you! START WITH THE AESTHETIC VALUE... Don't dwell on whether the artwork or artist you fancy is a future investable or not. You will often find more luck in a piece of art that you connect with and believe in! Remember it's not a stock but a creative masterpiece. TRY AND STICK TO ORIGINALS. There's nothing better to know that this piece belongs to you and only you (unless it's a Andy Warhol of course, then by all means feel free to buy the print!). HOW DO I ALLOCATE A BUDGET? There is no set formula when you're buying an artwork, it's a balance between the your art appetite, the aesthetic value, size of work and the artist's record.

EMERGEAST Since the inception of EMERGEAST, we’ve been spotlighting the Middle Eastern art scene’s up and coming artists who are shining light on the region’s societal, political and personal themes. EMERGEAST brings forth the new shapers of the Middle Eastern art scene. Abstract, calligraphy, pop, digital… the list goes on! Art knows no boundaries. ART GOES WALK ABOUT THE MOVING MUSEUM IS A NEW NOMADIC

ART CONCEPT ENLIGHTENING THE

ART WORLD. ITS FOUNDERS AYA MOUSAWI

ANDSIMON SAKHAI SHARE THE STROKES

OF ITS SUCCESS

ON THE CONCEPT BEHIND THE MOVING MUSEUM… The Moving Museum is a nomadic incubator for artists, ideas and cities. It is a large-scale, immersive project that manifests in a new place every year. The concept is to instigate the production of new work and ideas from urgent artistic voices, provide artists inspiring developmental opportunities in unexpected spaces and to identify and inhabit cities at the epicentre of shifting contemporary culture.

ON THE NEED FOR SUCH A PROJECT… So many people of our generation live and travel in different cities, so it made sense to create an institution that responds to the global nature of our world today. ON GALLERIES BECOMING A THING OF THE PAST… Galleries will always be relevant and be important institutional structures for artists to develop and expand their careers. That said, artists are often looking for more interesting ways to present and showcase their works, and there is a trend of artists who do not want to fit within the structure of a gallery but have the freedom to move around.

Our public programmes employ mediums such as performances, live art and food.

We have just

Words: Sophie Jones-Cooper

Simon Jeremy Bailey which is Iranian, but grew up in New York before can be viewed on moving to China and Dubai. I am Iraqi but our website. grew up in London and have travelled and lived in Venice, Istanbul and Dubai. This sense of identity confusion, of feeling at home in a city that is not technically your home, this feeling of being a nomad and not belonging to any one place but belonging to anywhere we chose to reside, is what has largely informed The Moving Museum. ON THEIR ACHIEVEMENTS… We have travelled to Dubai, London and Istanbul where we have mobilized large-scale exhibitions. We have curated intensive public programmes alongside each project, published in-depth publications, hosted dynamic residencies, commissioned over 50 new artworks by nearly 100 artists across all media, many of which have ended up in important international collections and exhibitions including at the Venice Biennale (receiving the Golden Lion), Whitechapel Gallery, Istanbul Biennale and more, and developed a major digital programme. READ IT & WEEP

For the past five years, The Coveteur has dominated the world wide web with their curated snaps of the fashion world’s most envy-inducing closets. As the duo goes offline and heads to the printing press with their first book, SLT catches up with the team and gets a sneak peek at what’s inside. FOR SOME, THE EYES ARE THE WINDOWS TO THE SOUL. But for fashion lovers, the closet is really a much better indicator of a person’s spirit. From how many Hermès Birkins they own to how they organize their Louboutins, you can really tell a lot about a person by the contents of those four walls. At least that’s what the past five years of The Coveteur has taught us. Since the site’s launch in 2011, New York-based founders Stephanie Mark and Jake Rosenberg have provided us with seemingly unlimited access into the closets of the fashion industry’s heavy-hitters and A-list celebrities from around the world. There’s one thing about seeing the inner workings of one’s wardrobe online but when you see them in print and are able to caress the glossy pages and almost feel the buttery quilting of Suzanne Roger’s Chanel collection, well, that’s an entirely different story. “The closets in the book are a true reflection of the people we started the site to profile. Insiders and the behind the scenes people that make all the magic happen! As well as people who have great person style,” says Jake. Local fashion heroes who made the cut include the Dubaibased Zayan Ghandour of S*uce Boutique and Caroline Issa (her father is half-Lebanese, half Iranian), whose London flat was shot

for the first time for the book. “There is a lot of exclusive content on the book – profiles that you won’t be able to find on the site,” says Jake, whose personal favourite, Christian Louboutin’s Paris home, was also shot for the book, along with Angela Missoni’s Italian villa. The team’s other must-includes aren’t necessarily household names but within the industry they’re demi-gods, including the stylist Elissa Santisi. “She has an amazing wardrobe – her collection of Celine trousers is enviable!” gushes Stephanie, who admits she has had her fair share of covet-worthy moments on set. “Recently I have been dying to bring home all things Gucci and any rare Chanel bags.” The pair were able to edit down their growing list of closets to 43 of the best of the best spread across 272-pages of coffee tableworthy goodness. However, there still remains one closet at the top of their bucket list, their white whale if you will. “I would love to do Michael Jackson’s tour wardrobe,” admits Stephanie. And we’d love to covet it!
