Social Media in the Fire Service I hope you realize that Social Media is here to stay. Seventy-six percent of our friends in government reported social media enabled them to have more meaningful interactions with their constituents. We saw the use of social media become a regular tool in the 2016 election campaign. Unlike past campaigns, social media effectively helped both candidates reach audiences across the nation at all times. Social media is not new. Blake Scott wrote an article that was published in Fire Engineering in 2013. He stated, “Social media has changed the world, and now the fire service must make a choice: adapt to the new environment or face some unpleasant consequences in the years to come.” The use of Instagram, Twitter and Facebook have become an integral part of every activity that goes on in your department.

It is no secret that I am a fan of using Facebook. My department has strict rules that the membership adheres to governing the use of social media. Our social media policy was put together by one of our chiefs. The policy was thoroughly explained to the membership.

I am privileged to be my department’s photog-

rapher and Public Information Officer. As soon as I get home from a major call, I write a brief explanation of what happened and share it, along with a photo or two with our community. Community interaction and comments are overwhelmingly positive. I should add that my chiefs trust my decisions and are extremely supportive of what I do.

Let’s face it, the public deserves to know what has happened in their community. The use of social media cuts down on inaccurate rumors and ultimately has rallied our community in support of their fire department. If we have a call that is serious, our community knows to go to our Facebook page to find out what happened.

Occasionally we have to remind a member that comments, and photos are my job. Our members know that they can share whatever their PIO places on social media. As an active PIO at a scene, we welcome the media. The chief has enough to do at a working fire. The PIO can handle the media by giving them enough accurate information so that they can do their job. Their job has been in existence since the early 18th century. If you want a

truthful story about what happened at your call, give the media the facts. Yes, there will be “fake news,” however it has been my experience that the local papers are on your side.

Give them the accurate facts so that they can write accurate stories that compliment your department. Inaccurate stories usually come about when no one talks to the media and they are forced to ask bystanders for statements that may be inaccurate, at best.

Delaware Firefighters Memorial: The Delaware Firefighters Memorial has been completed. It was dedicated at a ceremony on June 10, 2018.

The monument is located on the Green in front of Legislative Hall in Dover. At that dedication ceremony the names of the four firefighters who died in 2016 will be inducted into the memorial. All who attended were in Class “A” Uniform. This was a special day where we honored our heroes of the past and recent times. We came together to honor firefighters Leach, Fickes, Hope and McClanahan.

Conference 2018: Conference 2018 is only four months away. The dates are September 12 to 14, 2018.

Most of the forms are on the DVFA website.

Please fill them out and return them by August 8, 2018.

Also, there will be a number of new and informative seminars under a new format. We will also have some national speakers in the seminar presentations as well. Please check the website for information.

Apparatus and Equipment Inventory: An inventory of all apparatus is supposed to go to

As I sit down to write to you, the question that comes to my mind is, are we serving the public to the best of our abilities? I know that there are some departments that have the qualified firefighters and EMTs to do just that. But I ask you, does YOUR department have the qualified personnel to serve the residents in your district?

I do not write this to inflame or anger you, I write this to open up a dialogue. This is something we need to talk about. Can we continue to operate the way we have? Has your department scratched on the fire or EMS calls? When this does happen, the snowball effects come along.

The next department takes your call then then next takes their call.

Can we have an open and honest dialogue at your upcoming conference? Would you as the leadership of your department be open to this?

We may not have the answers at this time but if we all work together it is possible we could work out something with which all of us could live.

The definition of insanity is when you continue to do the same thing and expect a different outcome.

Please let us know if you are open to having a round table discussion with your fellow fire line officers.

Would you, the administrative officers, want to have a round table discussion on any topics? If so, please let us know.

If you have the opportunity to listen to Scott’s story you will come away with a different outlook on things.

We are still working on the cancer presumption legislation. How many of our members have died from this disease? Why don’t we track these and the suicide deaths of our members? We should, we must. From here on out, please let us know, so we can help keep track of this for our state.

As my time as your President nears the end, I hope that you feel that I, along with your DVFA officers, have tried to keep you informed on everything that has happened this year. We have done our best to keep the lines of communication open and honest.

If you have the opportunity to attend the seminars that are offered at your conference, please do so. We can learn from each other as we can learn from others from outside our great state.

by Lynn Warner, President LADVFA Well I guess the warm weather is finally here. It was a long cold winter that wanted to stay around. I hope that all the mothers out there had a happy Mother’s Day and we all remembered all the mothers who have gone before us and taught us everything we know. For them we are eternally grateful.

It has been busy time as I get back into my duties as president.

On April 1 and 2 I attended funeral services for past-President Mitizi Pharaoh from Talleyville and on April 15 I attended a funeral service for past-President Nanci Ashback from Claymont. Both of these ladies were great presidents and will be missed by many.

On April 24 my husband and I attended the 97th Annual Banquet of the Elsmere Fire Company. We had an enjoyable evening.

On April 19 my husband and I attended the

CFSI (Congressional Fire Service Institute) Dinner in Washington, DC, representing the LADVFA. It was great seeing Steve Austin and Lou Amabili receiving their well-deserved recognition. It was my honor to attend and I thank the LADVFA for sending me.

On April 21 my husband and I attended the 94th Anniversary Dinner of the Brandywine Hundred Fire Company. DVFA President Richard Perillo was honored by his fire company. Congratulations Richard! Harry and I had a nice evening.

On April 28 we attended the 97th Annual Banquet of the Holloway Terrace Fire Company and enjoyed ourselves very much.

The LADVFA Executive Meeting was held on May 7 at the Cheswold Fire Company.

Thank you to all who attended. I would like to thank the Cheswold Fire Company and Ladies Auxiliary for allowing us to use their kitchen and hall. Also, thanks to the Talleyville Ladies Auxiliary for a delicious meal and traveling down to serve the dinner. You are the best! I also want to take the time to thank the

Talleyville Fire Company and the Talleyville Ladies Auxiliary for all their support as I have gone through the chairs. They are my second family and I really appreciate all they do for me.

In May we honored all veterans, firefighters, ladies auxiliary members, and family members we have lost. On May 9 I attended New Castle County’s Memorial Service. The Claymont firefighters and Ladies Auxiliary held a beautiful memorial service. On May 16 I attended the Sussex County Memorial Service in Roxanna and on May 22 the Kent County Memorial Service in Leipsic. The auxiliaries do a great job honoring all the ladies who have answered their last call. These members have donated so much time to the Fire Service of Delaware and deserve to be honored.

ALSO, DON’T FORGET YOUR CONFERENCE FORMS ARE DUE JULY 15.

Always remember that volunteers are God’s Angels in disguise.

Trailer Fire in Smyrna

On April 29, 2018, Citizens Hose Company of Smyrna, Clayton Fire Company, Cheswold Fire Company and American Legion Ambulance of Smyrna were dispatched for a mobile home fire on West Big Woods Road in Smyrna. Units arrived to find a single-story trailer with smoke showing.

Two hoselines were stretched to extinguish the fire.

Selbyville Responds to Garage Fire On May 5, 2018, the Selbyville Volunteer Fire Company, along with Roxana, Frankford and Bishopville (MD), and Sussex County EMS, were alerted for a structure fire on Bethany Road. Heavy smoke was visible for many miles in the area. Engine 88-1 responded and arrived to find a wooden unattached garage fully involved. Firefighter Logan Murray assumed Operations Officer and Chief Engineer Jamie Latchum assumed Incident Command. Tanker 88 arrived and set up a water supply to Engine 1. Crews from Roxana, Frankford and Bishopville assisted with overhaul as the building was a total loss.

Residential Fire on Dupont Pkwy.

On April 5, 2018, Townsend Fire Company Station 26 was dispatched for a residential structure fire. D-24 arrived to fire from the roof. Engine 26 arrived, laid a four-inch supply line and deployed a 1-3/4 inch line and attacked fire through the front door. Tanker 26 supplied the engine. Crews from RE26 and Tower 27 made access through the garage doors for searches. Engine 275 was RIT. D-24 established a manpower pool for incoming units. Additional handlines were placed in service.

Crews from Stations 29, 44 and 45 handled overhaul. Stations responding were 26, 27, 4-24, 44 and 45.

Fire on Amtrak Train at Wilmington Station

Just after 1730 on May 22, 2018, Wilmington firefighters on the A Platoon were alerted to a train on fire in the station at the AmtrakJoseph R. Biden Railroad Station on East Front Street. Amtrak police reported a fire under a train stopped in the station. Fire units arrived to smoke and fire coming from under two of the train’s cars.

Crews stretched a portable standpipe consisting of three-inch fire hose up to the platform to supply the water to extinguish the fire.

The fire was quickly extinguished and all passenger cars were checked for any smoke or carbon monoxide. Passengers were shel-

tered in the station and in train cars not involved. The incident commander, Battalion Chief Richard Danner, placed the scene under control at 1811. The train involved was the Silver Meteor 97 traveling from New York City to Miami. There were no reports of civilian or firefighter injuries. Approximately 22 fire and EMS personnel responded to the incident, including the following: Skyboom 2, Engine 1, Squad 4, Squrt 3, Ladder 2, Battalion-1, Battalion-2, Deputy 4, St. Francis EMS, and New Castle County Paramedics.

Harrington Assists Houston with Building Fire

On May 2, 2018, the Harrington Fire Company assisted the Houston Fire Company with a building fire on Pine Street in Houston. Harrington assisted with a ladder, tanker, ambulance and two engines. The Carlisle (Milford), Bowers, Greenwood, Farmington and Felton Fire Companies and Kent County EMS also assisted.

Five Points Assists Wilmington Manor

On March 27, 2018, Five Points Fire Company was alerted to assist Wilmington Manor Fire Company with Ladder 17 on a secondalarm assignment for a working fire at the Dollar Tree in Beaver Brook Plaza (see below). Ladder 17 and Chief 17-8 quickly responded. Upon arrival, Ladder 17’s crew set up the aerial ladder in front of Pivot Physical Therapy, and proceeded to the roof to work with

other companies to perform a trench cut. Ladder 17’s crew worked on the roof with the other special service companies for approximately 45 minutes. After completing roof operations, Ladder 17’s crew assisted with exterior operations on the Alpha side of the structure.

2-Alarm Building Fire On March 23, 2018, Wilmington Manor along with several mutual aid companies were dispatched to a building fire at the Dollar Tree in the Beaverbrook Shopping Center (see above).

First arriving units found heavy smoke showing from the roof area. A second alarm was struck shortly after arrival. The officers and members would like to thank the local Wawa in the Beaverbrook Shopping Center which opened and provided food and drinks to all the firefighters.

Volunteer Hose Handles House Fire

On February 11, 2018, Volunteer Hose Company Station 1 and 27, 4 and 24, 26, and 29 were alerted for a residential structure fire in Middletown. First units arrived to find fire from the roof and front of the home. Lines were placed in service and the fire was extinguished.

Harrington Assists Farmington with House Fire

On April 14, 2018, the Harrington Fire Company assisted the ladder and ambulance. Greenwood and Kent County EMS also Farmington Fire Company with a house fire in the 2300 Block of assisted.

Claymont Fire Company On April 15, 2018, the Claymont Fire Company was dispatched to Melontree Court in the Stoneybrook Apartments complex for a report of smoke coming from the second floor. Firefighters found fire in the rear of a two-story, middle-of-the-row townhome on the exterior and extending to the roof. All residents were safely out on their own. The fire extended to the attic space of two units and damaged two others. Responding were Claymont, Talleyville, Brandywine Hundred, Boothwyn, Lower Chichester, Reliance, Aston, and New Castle County EMS. The Incident Commander was Claymont Fire Chief Mark Harris.

Smoking Receptacle Ignites On April 24, 2018, Dover AFB firefighters were dispatched to a arrival. Crews from Quint 58 conducted overhaul of the damreport of an outside fire on Purple Heart Drive, Base Operations aged area while the crew from Rescue 58 checked for extension.

Brush Fire on Gov. Printz Blvd.

On April 14, 2018, the Brandywine Hundred Fire Company Station 11 responded to a brush fire on Governor Printz Blvd.

Vacant House Fire in Wilmington On April 3, 2018, Wilmington firefighters on the C Platoon were alerted for a house fire on West Fourth Street. Wilmington Police arrived and reported fire on the first floor.

While responding, Battalion Chief Michael Schaal requested a fourth engine and second ladder. Units arrived to find heavy fire conditions on the first floor and fire spreading to the second floor of a vacant structure. Additional resources were requested, bringing Engine 3 to the scene. The fire was extinguished searchers found no one inside. The residents of the neighboring houses were evacuated until the fire was placed under control.

The house sustained significant smoke and fire damage. The following units responded: Engine 6, Engine 1, Squad 4, Skyboom 2, Squrt 3, Ladder 2, Ladder 1, Battalion-1, Battalion-2, F-1, Battalion-12, F9, the Wilmington Fire Marshal’s Office, St. Francis EMS, New Castle County Medics, Wilmington Licenses and Inspections, and Delmarva Power.

Sprinklers Might Have Helped

On March 27, 2018, Aetna Hose, Hook and Ladder Company, along with mutual aid from Christiana and Singerly, were dispatched to Versailles Court in the Frenchtown Woods Townhouses for a structure fire. New Castle County Paramedics were added to the response.

Crews arrived to find smoke showing from a middle-of-the-row townhouse with extension into adjacent (Bravo and Delta 1) occupancies. Crews initiated an aggressive interior attack on all three units while simultaneously searching for any victims. A second alarm was sounded bringing additional resources from Mill Creek (Stations 2 and 21), Volunteer Hose, Delaware Air National Guard, Odessa, Port Penn, Delaware City, Five Points, Elsmere, Good Will, St. Francis Hospital EMS Rehab Unit, and the Delaware State Fire Marshal’s Office. Crews worked for several hours. The Delaware State Fire Marshal’s Office has determined the cause to be improperly discarded smoking materials on a rear deck and damages were estimated to be $400,000. This development did not have residential sprinklers. Chief Bowerson had command.

Stubborn Car Fire at MVC

On April 22, 2018, Aetna Hose, Hook and Ladder Company units a pole and wires down, as well as a fuel-fed fire.

Claymont Assists at MVC

On April 14, 2018, USAR-13 was requested to assist NCC Station 20 (Holloway Terrace) on a serious MVC at Route 295 northbound at the New Castle Avenue off ramp. A tractor trailer had lost control, flipped on its side and the cab was impaled by the guardrail. The USAR team, in addition to members from Station 20 and R12, uti-

lized Paratech struts to stabilize the vehicle while others used multiple hydraulic tools to disassemble the cab from around the driver.

Extrication took approximately 90 minutes before the patient was handed off to EMS. - Submitted by Gary Plotts

Harrington Responds to MVC On May 20, 2018, the Harrington Fire Company, Kent County EMS and Delaware State Police Aviation were dispatched to an MVC on South DuPont Highway, south of Hopkins Cemetery Road. Firefighters arrived to find a single vehicle overturned with two subjects injured and out of the vehicle. The injured — one child and one adult — were transported by ambulance to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. OIC was Chief Robbie Brode.

Townsend MVC On March 7, 2018, Townsend Fire Company Station 26 units was dispatched to an MVC rollover at Macey Lane and Summit Bridge Road. First Assistant Chief Clark arrived to find a single-vehicle MVC with the patient out of the vehicle with minor injuries. The person was treated and transported.

Car Vs. House … Neither Wins Early on April 8, 2018, Station 22 was dispatched to an accident involving a car into a structure on Seaford Street. First arriving crews found an SUV into a house with extensive damage to both the vehicle and the house. One patient was transported to the hospital

by B22. Claymont Fire Company’s USAR Team, NCC Building Inspector, Delmarva Power, and NCCPD assisted.

Injured Worker at Port of Wilmington

June 2018

On May 12, 2018, Wilmington firefighters on the C Platoon were alerted for an injured worker on a vessel at Berth 6 in the Port of Wilmington. The injured worker was located on the ship, below deck approximately 35 feet. Battalion Chief Michael Schaal assumed command and called the WFD Special Operations Team to affect a rescue. The team descended and packaged the patient in a Stoke’s basket and utilized an onboard crane to hoist the patient out

of the hull of the ship to dock side. Additional crews and EMS transferred the patient from the basket to a stretcher and transported him to Wilmington Hospital. The following responded: Skyboom 2, Squad 4, Ladder 1, Battalion-1, Battalion-2, St. Francis EMS, and New Castle County Paramedics.

Elevator Falls Injuring One

Claymont Fire Company

Wilmington firefighters on the B Platoon were alerted to an elevator accident on North King Street in the Delmarva Power Building.

Initial reports indicated that an elevator fell an unknown number of floors and there were an unknown number of injured passengers. Units arrived and determined one passenger was in the elevator and that the elevator fell approximately six to eight feet and stopped between the first floor and the basement. The adult male was reported to be alert but experiencing back pain. The patient was packaged in a Stoke’s basket and lifted from the elevator by Squad Company 4 and Ladder Company 1 through a three-foot opening and was turned over to St. Francis EMS and NCC paramedics for evaluation and transport to the Wilmington Hospital.

Battalion Chief Michael Harris was the IC. The following units responded: Skyboom 2, Squad 4, Ladder 1, Battalion-2, St. Francis EMS, and New Castle County Paramedics.

April 16, 2018, started with some severe weather which, by rush hour, turned into torrential downpours soaking the area, overwhelming storm sewers. Claymont volunteers responded to several subjects stranded in their vehicles. One response involved two motorists on top of a pickup in rising flood waters on I-495 southbound, just south of the Philadelphia Pike. Rescue-Engine 13 (OIC E. Hassel) and crew were able to pull up to the stranded vehicle and the occupants climbed into the cab. Both were evaluated by our EMS in A13. Ambulance B13 checked on several other disabled vehicles and occupants along this stretch of road.

3 FFs Injured in Dover Collapse

On April 22, 2018 at 1903, the Dover Fire Department was alerted for a house fire on Meadow Ridge Parkway in a rural section of the district not protected by hydrants. A tanker assist was started from Hartly (51) and Marydel (56), along with RIT from Camden (41).

Past-Chief Brian Bashista arrived and advised of a two-story, single-family home with fire on the delta side. Capt. Michael Morris arrived, established command and advised of fire from the roof of the garage. E2, E3, R41-6 and L2 arrived and stretched two 1-3/4 inch attack lines. Units were on scene for approximately three min-

utes when the garage roof collapsed on the crews below. Crews removed one firefighter covered by debris. A water supply was achieved by arriving tanker units. L2’s aerial was placed in service.

The fire was contained to the garage with no extension into the residence. The scene was placed under control and crews remained on scene for an additional hour performing overhaul and checking hot spots. Two firefighters were transported and later released. A third was treated and released for duty while on scene.

Joint Training by Carlisle and Dover

On May 22, 2018, 15 firefighters from Carlisle Fire Company and Dover AFB conducted a joint training session at the training facility on Dover AFB. Firefighters conducted search and rescue training utilizing the search trainer, then conducted hands-on evolutions in

the structural training tower. Special thanks to Assistant Chief Ryan Knowles of Carlisle for coordinating this training event and Assistant Chief Thomas Krass and Dover AFB firefighters for making it a success.

Evening Vehicle Rescue Class On May 2, 2018, several members traveled to the B and F Towing yard on Old Airport Road for vehicle rescue training. Chief Manley oversaw the operation, while members got some hands-on training with the various Hurst Rescue Tools. Squad 17 and Ladder 17 were staffed and available at the training. EMS Memorial Bike Ride Comes Through Delaware

The National EMS Memorial Bike Ride is an event that brings together all EMS levels to bring awareness to the dangers faced by EMS providers and honor those lost in the year or years prior. Nicknamed, Muddy Angels, over 120 bicycle riders and 30 support personnel rode 550 miles starting in Boston, Massachusetts, and ending in National Harbor, Maryland. The National EMS Memorial Service kicks off the Weekend of Honor during which all those lost in Line of Duty Death will be memorialized on the Tree of Life. The event started on May 11 and concluded May 19, 2018.

This year the event entered Delaware at the Cape May-Lewes Ferry on May 17 where a ceremony was held at Lewes Fire Department for Tim McClanahan who was killed in a training accident. The ride continued through Georgetown where a ceremony and lunch were held at the Georgetown Fire Department. The ride concluded that day at

Chesapeake College (MD) with rest stops at the Greenwood Volunteer Fire Department and Denton (MD).

Honorees this year included: FF/EMT Joe Carmody - Bethany Beach and Millville Fire Departments; FF/Medic Alan Schweitzer - Laurel Fire Department and Ocean City Fire Department; FF/EMT Cadet Kaitlyn Purnell - Pittsville VFD; FF/EMT Lt. Christopher Leach Wilmington Fire Department; FF/EMT Lt. Ardythe Hope - Wilmington Fire Department; and FF/EMT Jerry Fickes - Wilmington Fire Department.

The event was also the 10th Anniversary honoring and commemorating: Paramedic Stephanie Callaway - Sussex County EMS; and FF/EMT Michelle Smith - Delaware City Fire Company.

Retirement of Paramedic III John R. Schmitt Senior Paramedic John R. Schmitt started his education with a selected group of individuals from Sussex County. Classes were held at Kent General Paramedics Education Program in 1991. John later graduated from the Tidewater Community College paramedic program in Virginia Beach in 1993, and was hired by Sussex County EMS in July 1993 becoming one of the original paramedics in the county.

Throughout his years of service, he has seen the department grow and patient care capabilities expand.

John was heavily active in different committees to include the equipment committee, of which he was co-chairperson. The committee is responsible for determining what gear and how it was carried by personnel and on the units. John was also a chaplain, part of the EKG review, and later served as a field training officer (FTO). John also was a certified BCLS, ACLS, PALS and PHTLS instructor for many years.

John has an undying passion for education, whether as a student or teacher. He received his master’s degree in Learning Management Systems in 2012 from Wilmington University. Since then he’s taught as a Delaware Technical Community College Instructor for allied health care students.

John enjoyed his time as an FTO and could always be found researching or learning something new.

To his co-workers, one would say he is a joy to be around and will always make you laugh. John has an extremely huge heart, positive attitude, and a gratifying personality that both his co-workers and patients see on a regular basis.

Outside of work, John loves to spend time with his family and friends. John also enjoys spending time at his church. After 25 years of dedicated service, his SCEMS family wishes him a happy retirement. Congratulations John!

Sussex County EMS Deputy Director of Administration Jeff Cox Completes International Professional Designation Process Jeff Cox has successfully completed the process that awards the professional designation of Chief EMS Officer (CEMSO). The Commission on Professional Credentialing (CPC) met on March 13, 2018, to confer the designation. Cox becomes one of only 127 CEMSOs worldwide.

The designation program is a voluntary program designed to recognize individuals who demonstrate their excellence in seven measured components including experience, education, professional development, professional contributions, association membership, community involvement and technical competence. In addition, all applicants are required to identify a future professional development plan.

The CEMSO designation program uses a comprehensive peer review model to evaluate candidates seeking the credential. The Commission on Professional Credentialing (CPC) awards the designation only after an individual successfully meets all of the organization’s stringent criteria.

Achieving this designation signifies Jeff Cox’s commitment to his/her career in the fire and emergency services.

This professional designation is valid for three years. Maintaining the designation requires recipients to show continued growth in the areas of professional development, professional contributions, active association membership and community involvement as well as adhere to a strict code of professional conduct The Commission on Professional Credentialing, an entity of the Center for Public Safety Excellence, (CPSE) administers the Designation Program. With another NASCAR race in the history books, Kent County Public Safety was pleased to contribute to the overall success of the of the May 2018 races at Dover International Speedway. PulsePoint Gets First Citizen Response to Cardiac Arrest For the first time, New Castle County’s lifesaving PulsePoint smartphone application has prompted a citizen response to a cardiac arrest incident. At 2324 on April 3, 2018, the New Castle County 911 Center received a call reporting an unconscious person at the Acme store in the F and N Shopping Center on Naamans Road. Through PulsePoint, a nearby citizen who had recently registered through the app, was alerted to the incident and responded to the grocery store. There, the citizen responder performed chest compressions on the patient while assisting an off-duty nurse who had already begun CPR. The 911 Center also dispatched Claymont Fire Company engine and county paramedics to the incident. The fire engine responded with an AED on board, and three shocks were delivered to the patient. New Castle County Paramedics arrived and restored a pulse before the patient was transported to the Christiana Hospital ICU. “I applaud the immediate response by everyday citizens who provided live-saving care to a member of our community,” County Executive Matt Meyer said. “We continue to share this simple message to all our residents:

Learn CPR. Download PulsePoint. Help save lives.”

“We are grateful for the prompt actions by both the on-scene nurse and the citizen that responded to the PulsePoint alert,” said Chief Lawrence E. Tan of the New Castle County Paramedics.

On March 20, County officials announced the launch of the PulsePoint app, which directs citizen responders to locations where CPR is needed to save lives. It also permits individuals and businesses to register locations of AEDs and alerts bystanders to the closest AED during an emergency medical response. At the time, 597 residents had already downloaded the app and registered to provide CPR in emergency medical situations. That number increased to 1,009 by March 31.

The PulsePoint app is supported by the New Castle County Recorder of Deeds Technology Fund which provided funding to pay the initial set-up and annual subscription fees for the program.

DSFS Hosts “Side by Side” for National Fire Sprinkler Day May 19, 2018, was designated as National Fire Sprinkler Day, with educational opportunities taking place across the county. The Delaware Fire Sprinkler Coalition participated by teaming with the Delaware Volunteer Firefighters Association, Delaware State Fire School and Delaware State Fire Marshal’s Office to conduct a “Side by Side” demonstration. This demonstration shows the devastating results of a residential fire with and without life saving home fire sprinklers. A classroom session took place and then attendees moved to the Fire School grounds for the live demo. Chairman of the Delaware Fire Sprinkler Coalition, Paul Eichler presented valuable information.

DNREC HazMat Conference held at DSFS The DNREC Hazardous Materials Conference took place at DSFS May 11 through 13, 2018. Each year, through the generosity of sponsors, the conference provides class and practical training on various areas of hazardous materials responses at no cost.

Almost 200 individuals were registered this year. The Fire School works with the conference each year to host it along with the dinner each year.

Junior Fire Camp June 26-28th, 2018 For the second year, the Delaware State Fire School will be running a Junior Fire Camp for youths aged 13 to 17 years of age. This camp is for those who are interested in the fire and rescue services and will give them an opportunity to experience a small portion of the training available if they decide to participate with their local fire company. Campers can experience training like using fire extinguishers, forcible entry, and using fire hoses. There will also be field trips and a tour to experience other aspects of the fire and rescue services.

Project has helped reduce fire deaths by checking and installing smoke alarms through door-to-door canvassing. On May 12, 2018, Red Cross Delaware assembled approximately 140 volunteers at the

Dover Air Force Base Museum and split into teams to go door-todoor checking and installing smoke alarms. Participating fire companies included Bowers, Camden-Wyoming, Cheswold, Clayton, Dover, Felton, Hartly and Magnolia.

Cumberland Valley VFA

April was a busy and exciting month for members of the Cumberland Valley Volunteer Firemen’s Association (CVVFA). The month started with the spring meeting, which was hosted by Vigilant Hose Company of Emmitsburg (MD), Fredrick County Fire Museum and the National Fire Historical Center. While in Emmitsburg, members also joined the family members of fallen firefighters Dave Good and Joe Kroboth at the National Fallen Firefighter’s Memorial to remember and honor their lives. These two heroes lost their lives 20 years ago on the roadway and their sacrifice led to the creation of the Emergency Responder Safety Institute.

CVVFA is committed to saving the lives of first responders through roadway education in the memory of our fallen brothers.

The next big event in April for CVVFA members was the Annual Congressional Fire Services Institute’s National Fire and Emergency Services Dinner and Symposium in Washington, DC. Members joined 15000 firefighters from across the country for advocacy and discussion of key issues being addressed on Capitol Hill. During the symposium,

CVVFA members Steve Austin and Meri-K Appy had the opportunity to facilitate a seminar on Introducing Resources for Public Education on Safe Driving Practices at Emergency Response Scenes. The seminar offered attendees training and public outreach tools to create a culture of safety during roadway operations. Another big event highlight was CVVFA’s very own, Mr. Steve Austin, being the recipient of the CFSI/Motorola Solutions Mason Lankford Fire Service Leadership Award and being named to the CFSI board.

To end the month, a large number of CVVFA members gathered in Indianapolis at FDIC to promote roadway safety and educate firefighters from around the country. As FDIC Instructor Jack Sullivan shared a message on roadway safety, Dr. Harry Carter delivered a message on problem solving, Anthony Corriea had a discussion with attendees on best practices for fire service business, and Dr. Candice McDonald facilitated a session on recruitment and retention.

A new addition was also added to the ResponderSafety booth to draw attendees over to hear the message, life size traffic cones! FDIC attendees stopped to get selfies with AND in the traffic cone costumes.

Members David Lewis, Dr. Candice McDonald, and Ryan Daughton also ran the FDIC Courage and Valor 5k in the cone costumes to promote awareness. The cone costumes were a huge hit and will be traveling around the country to keep the discussion on this critical topic going!

Kiwanis Club of Wilmington Honors Captain Gordon Davis The Kiwanis Club of Wilmington held their quarterly luncheon at the Hotel DuPont honoring personnel from various public safety agencies in New Castle County. The club bestowed the honor of Firefighter of the First Quarter 2018 to Captain Gordon Davis.

Captain Davis was hired by the WFD on August 23, 2004. He was selected because of his dedication and determination to move our great department forward and start an innovative department-wide training.

Captain Davis approached the Fire Administration to develop a Squad School. The Squad School's main mission was to train in a multitude of technical rescue disciplines which would ultimately enhance operations. After numerous discussions with the Training Unit, a plan was developed and, with the approval of the Chief of Fire, it was initiated. The program was a year in length and over 70 firefighters participated. All the firefighters have completed the core courses and are able to test for national certifications.

Captain Davis dedicated numerous hours of on-duty and off-duty time delivering the courses. Throughout his career, Captain Davis has always had the best interest of the Wilmington Fire Department as his top priority. Captain Davis epitomizes what firefighters should strive to achieve.

Indian River Volunteer Fire Company recently purchased a 2018 Rosenbauer Commander, carrying 1,000 gallons of water, various firefighting tools and rescue equipment. This replaced a 1994 Spartan/4Guys Engine that was sold to Ovid, Colorado, and a 1997 Spartan/4Guys rescue that was sold to Cooksville, Illinois. This unit responds from the main station in Oak Orchard.

New Castle County Sudden Cardiac Arrest Survivors Reunion At the 6th Annual New Castle County Paramedics Sudden Cardiac Arrest Survivors Reunion held February 27, 2018, over 300 first responders, emergency communications personnel and bystanders were recognized for their lifesaving efforts.

Over the Edge Fundraiser for Special Olympics Delaware

The Over the Edge fundraising event was held on May 10, 2018, in downtown Wilmington. DVFA President Richard Perillo, Christiana Fire Chief Rich Perillo and DVFA 2nd Vice-President Jay Jones each rappeled down the face of a 17-story office building, along with 87 other “edgers” who combined to raise more than $125,000 at this single-day event.

Obituaries

Greenwood Volunteer Fire Company’s Thomas ‘Tommy’ Jones

Thomas ‘Tommy’ Jones passed away on Sunday, February 18, 2018, at Christiana Hospital.

Jones was a member of the Greenwood Volunteer Fire Company for 41 years. He leaves a legacy of accomplishments not only

for his fire company but for neighboring companies as well.

Over the years he has held the positions of Fire Recorder, Chief Engineer, Third Assistant Chief, Second Assistant Chief, First Assistant Chief, Deputy Chief, and Chief which he held for 10 years. He was the Deputy Chief when he passed away.

He served on many committees including Building and Maintenance, Member of the Year/Firefighter of the Year, Fire Prevention (which he helped form for the company), New Truck (six trucks), New Building, the By-Laws and SOGs, and additional smaller committees.

He was most proud of the committee he chaired to restore the company’s first running engine, a 1923 Ford Model T. The restoration took place from 1986 to 1990.

He had the engine rebuilt, repainted the truck, restored all the original tools it carried, and retored all woodwork.

Tommy joined the ranks of the GVFC on

October 11, 1976, and became a full senior member in 1977. He was one of many who were in a pilot program that allowed people at the age of 16 to serve the company as junior members. Since then he has served his community nonstop and has been at the fire house often more than his own home Tommy has been on over 2300 fire alarms since 2000.

Since 2007 Tommy has been in the top 10 fire responders and for eight of those years he was fireman with most alarms attended.

Tommy was presented with numerous awards over the years to include Fireman of the Year in 1988 and 2007. He was honored with the Chief’s Award in 1993 and 2011 and President’s Award in 1994. He was named Sussex County Ambulance Association Chief of the Year in 2014 and was inducted into the Delmarva Volunteer Fireman’s Hall of Fame in 2016, for his hard work and dedication.

He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Robin; sons Chad (Cassi) Jones, Zach (Jennifer) Jones; his mother F. Elaine Jones; sister Susanne (Cliff) Foskey; and granddaughter Aubrey Jones. Services took place at the Greenwood VFC on February 24, 2018.

South Bowers Station 57 Holds Appreciation Night and Awards Banquet

The South Bowers Volunteer Fire Company Appreciation Night and Awards Banquet was held at the Station on April 7, 2018. The funfilled evening began with an open bar and appetizers from Seafood City of Felton, which served steamed jumbo shrimp, shrimp wrapped in bacon, oysters on the half shell and oysters Rockefeller. Plenty of sliced fruit, fresh vegetables and dips, cubed cheeses and crackers were available. The guests dined on a full meal catered by Mission BBQ of Dover. The pulled pork and chicken, baked beans, potato salad, tossed salad, cobbler and all the fixin’s were delicious.

Life Member/past-President Clinton Adams (deceased), was publically acknowledged and his family was thanked for the generous donation of land where the present fire station is located (Scotts Corner Road). The meeting room is now proudly named in Mr. Adams’ honor.

For dedication and outstanding effort Life Member/Fire Chief Emeritus David Bryan LeGates (deceased), had the main engine garage named in his honor. Both members are greatly missed. Both past-President Adams’ and Chief LeGates’ vision and hopes for the future still live on!

Joseph Yonkers received the 2017 Life Saving Award for his selfless act and heroic effort that saved two lives on July 26, 2017, from drowning in a catch pond near the Dover Toll Plaza. The award was presented by our current Fire Chief Bobby Johnson.

The 2017 South Bowers Fire Chiefs Award was presented to Assistant Fire Chief Alvin ‘AJ’ Walls by Fire Chief Bobby Johnson. The award was given for Walls’ outstanding service to the company, leadership and advanced training skills.

The 2017 Firefighter of the Year Award was presented to Life Member/past-Company President Jack Potter by President Jason Harvey and Fire Chief Bobby Johnson with great enthusiasm. Potter received this award for his leadership skills, dedication and outstanding service to this company and to the fire service in general.

The Top 5 Responder Awards went to James ‘Jimmy’ LeCates (former Chief Engineer); Alvin ‘AJ’ Walls (Assistant Fire Chief); Donna Sivley (Firefighter); Joe ‘Curley’ Hurd (Fire Lieutenant); and Bobby Johnson (Fire Chief).

Each recipient received a Yeti cooler. A really cool award!

Fire Chief Bobby Johnson presented the 2017 Fire Police Member of the Year to Vincent Trice for his years of dedication and outstanding service. It was a total surprise.

Sarah Trice received the 2017 Junior Member of the Year Award for her willingness to participate and eagerness to learn during training nights. She has a positive attitude and has a long volunteer career with in the fire service ahead of her. Good luck. She is the youngest daughter of Vincent Trice, so it was a big night for the Trice family!

Past-Auxiliary President Dianne Burk and past-Vice President Amber Burk presented Charter Members/past-Auxiliary Presidents Janice Walls and Phyllis French with the first Auxiliary Outstanding Achievement Award.

The award winners received an engraved clear acrylic plaque with the new Auxiliary Rose symbol. Both members are still very active with the auxiliary. Thank you, ladies for a job well done!

Steve Austin Honored with Mason Lankford Award

On April 19, 2018, Steve Austin, a life member of the Aetna Hose and Hook Company, was honored with the Mason Lankford Fire Service Leadership Award at the 30th Annual National Fire and Emergency Services Dinner. The award is considered the most prestigious award in the nation’s fire service, honoring individuals for leadership at the national level. Over 1500 fire service officials from across the country attended the program, including a large delegation from the Delaware volunteer fire service.

Steve Austin embodies the virtues of values of our nation’s fire service. An active member of the fire service for 55 years, he established a legacy that few in the profession have achieved. At the local level, Steve remains active with Aetna, still responding to emergencies as a Fire Police Officer. At the state level, he served as President of the Delaware Volunteer Firefighters Association in 1999-2000 and continues to participate in DVFA activities.

It is at the national level where Steve has truly made his greatest impact for the fire service which earned him this coveted award. Since 1985, Steve Austin has made lasting contributions to many organizations including the Congressional Fire Services Institute where he

served as Chairman of the CFSI National Advisory Committee for four terms; Director of Government Affairs for the International Association of Arson Investigators for over 33 years; former Vice-Chairman of the National Board on Fire Service Professional Qualifications; and cofounder of the Cumberland Valley Volunteer Firemen’s Association Emergency Responder Safety Institute, established to teach public safety personnel proper safety procedures when responding to roadside emergencies.

Steve has also been actively involved with other organizations including the National Fire Protection Association, the International Fire Service Training Association, the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation, the International Association of Fire Chiefs and the Fire Service Based EMS Advocates which he helped to establish.

By receiving the Lankford Award, Steve becomes only the third person in the history of the National Fire and Emergency Services Dinner program to have received this honor and the CFSI Fire Service Person of the Year, the precursor to the Lankford Award which he received in 1996.

Gone But Not Forgotten AGAIN

By Bob Romig I just wanted to let all my friends at Good Will know that Engine 184, the 1964 Mack, has changed hands again. This unit was sold to the SAVES of Somerville, Alabama, in February 2000, and then in 2009, my good friend Jim Briggs, a member of the Florida Antique Bucket Brigade, traded his 1940 Seagrave Quint for the rig. It had been up for sale for the past few years and I contacted the guys from Goodwill to see if anyone wanted to bring her back up to Delaware but no one had an interest. You could have driven it home from Florida as it has Themodyne diesel in it and runs great. Just last month Jim sold it to another private owner in Lutz, Florida, so it will have a good home. The owner is a contractor and wanted it for his kids, but promised to take it

to parades and shows like Jim and Carol Briggs did while they had it.

When I first saw it at one of our meetings I knew it was the old 18-4 from New Castle because it had the mural of the Fox on the door and the brass fittings. This unit carries a serial number of C95F1234. Really would have liked for you guys to bring it back home.

Another rig from Delaware that was owned by Mike Healy, a Florida Antique Bucket Brigade member, has been returned to its home in Smyrna. Engine 44, the 1978 Hahn pumper, was purchased by a couple of members of the Citizen’s Hose Company earlier this year. Sure hope that they will participate in a couple of the Fourth of July parades or Halloween parades that Kent County has every year. Glad to see that it came back home.

The Wilmington Fire Department welcomed 14 new Explorers to the Wilmington Fire Department Explorer Post 100. Young Wilmington residence ages 14 to 20 are able to join and experience what it is like to be a Wilmington firefighter. Explorers will train and

learn all of the skills used by firefighters in emergency medical care, firefighting and rescue operations. The Explorer Post is led by Battalion Chief John Looney, Lieutenant Griff Jordan, and Lieutenant Andrew Cavanaugh.

Fire and EMS Awards Presented

RESCUE FROM TOWNHOME FIRE On May 13, 2017, Christiana Fire Company was dispatched to a townhouse fire in Bear. New Castle County Police reported a person was trapped in the fire building.

Assistant Chief John McPartland, as officer of Engine 12, found a twostory townhouse with smoke showing. Chief McPartland was met by a hysterical female who stated her 16-year-old daughter was trapped inside.

Assistant Chief McPartland directed the hose line crew to proceed to the seat of the fire, which was a half-story below grade. McPartland went to the second floor to start a primary search. Engine 12’s crew attacked the fire while protecting the interior stairs. Searching above the fire, Chief McPartland located an unconscious female in a second-floor bedroom. He quickly removed her; she had no pulse and was not breathing. Ladder 12’s The New Castle County Volunteer Firefighters’ Association, in conjunction with the New Castle County Fire Chiefs’ Association, bestowed individual and unit awards upon emergency personnel for valorous and/or meritorious efforts in rendering assistance, facilitating rescue and battling fire at several incidents occurring during the period of August 2016 through December 2017. Awards were presented at the first annual Medal Day cer-

HEAD-ON CRASH INJURES 8

CRASH WITH EJECTION & ENTRAPMENT On November 13, 2016, Christiana Fire Company Ladder 12 and Squad 12 were dispatched to MVC at Buckley Boulevard and Pulaski Highway. Units arrived to find three persons ejected and lying on the roadway and two persons trapped in two separate vehicles.

Squad 12’s crew extricated one victim and Ladder 12’s crew extricated the other. Firefighters from both units rendered emergency medical care to multiple patients, several of whom were critically injured.

Seven patients were transported, two by BLS ambulances prior to arrival of paramedics. One of these patients was a trauma alert, the other was a trauma code. Five other ALS patients were transported from the scene. For their efforts, emergency personnel are awarded the Meritorious Service Award.

On June 14, 2017, Christiana Fire Company was dispatched to Songsmith Drive and Cybal Court for an MVC. Fireboard advised they were adding ALS and that a subject might be trapped. The crew of Engine 12 arrived to a two-vehicle head-on crash with a priority 1 patient trapped in a four-door sedan.

The crew from Engine 12 worked on the driver’s side of the vehicle, while the crew from Ladder 12 worked the interior. Due to the position of the patient and the damage to the vehicle, Assistant Chief Andrew McPartland requested additional resources. Command 6 arrived and assumed command, as crews continued to work.

Firefighters removed the subject after 24 minutes and turned him over to the crew of B6 and the ALS unit for treatment and transport. Other crews began assessment of seven elderly people who where passengers in the other vehicle. For their efforts, emergency personnel received the Meritorious Service Award.

NAEMT EMS on Capitol Hill

The annual NAEMT EMS on Capitol Hill event took place on April 10 and 11, 2018, with a pre-Hill visit briefing and other details at the Crystal City Hilton in Arlington, Virginia. This was the largest attendance to date with 235 registered attendees from 37 states and Puerto Rico.

Attendees were advised that delays should be expected due to the Facebook (FB) hearing. In addition, some advocates from smaller states were teamed up with other states to make a better presence. Delaware teamed up with Maryland.

Topics and/or talking points were: HR 1876/S781, The Good Samaritan Health Professionals Act of 2017; HR 1445, The Veterans Reimbursement for Emergency Ambulance Services Act (VREASA); HR 5429, The Supporting & Improving Rural EMS Needs Act (SIREN Act); Congressional EMS Caucus (fortunately Congresswoman Rochester had already joined); EMS Staffing, Funding and Drug Shortages.

Our group consisted of St. Francis EMS Chief Scott Bundek, Lieutenants Gary Peterson and Sean Chudzik of St. Francis EMS and myself as we started our day with visits to the following: Representative Hoyer of Maryland at the Capitol Building and met with senior staffer Charlene MacDonald as Rep. Hoyer was at the FB hearing. We gave her our brochure and business cards as we discussed the above mentioned national topics as well as how they affect us Delaware, Maryland and nationwide. We also discussed: staffing and funding concerns at all fire and EMS stations and the mental health of EMTs. We then proceeded to the annual group picture on the east side of the Capitol steps. Afterwards we continued our visit to the Russell Senate Office Building to see Senator Chris Coons and he too was involved in the FB hearing. We were able to meet and speak with one of the Senator’s senior staffers, Jacqueline Thomas, who remembered me from our visit last year. We gave her our brochures and business cards as we discussed all the above topics.

We then entered the Longworth House Office Building for a visit to see Congresswoman Lisa Blount Rochester.

Unfortunately, she too was in a committee meeting and not available. However, we were able to speak to her senior staffer Betsy Coulbourn and she too also remembered me from last year’s visit. We discussed the aforementioned and gave her our brochure and our business cards.

Once again, we proceeded across the Capitol to the Hart Senate Office Building to visit with Senator Tom Carper. This time we were fortunate to actually see and speak with Senator Carper and his chief aide Andrew Shine as we discussed the above topics. We gave both the Senator and Andrew our brochures, business cards and took a few pictures.

We finally concluded our visits and headed across the Capitol again to the Rayburn House Office Building for a wrap up/post Hill visit reception with the other advocates and the NAEMT leaders. The wrap up meeting/reception was well attended and we were surprised that Congresswoman Lisa Blount Rochester and two of her staff also attended the reception. I was able to introduce the Congresswoman to our NAEMT leaders and she was asked by NAEMT President Dennis Rowe and myself to provide her assistance in overall EMS needs nationwide as well as sit for an interview in a future NAEMT Pulse Magazine. We were able to take a few photos with the Congresswoman as well.

As we concluded our day’s events, I was able to in check my walking mileage app indicating approximately nine miles traveled. I finally returned home the next afternoon via Amtrak.

Overall, St. Francis EMS Chief Scott Bundek, for this being his first time involved with this event, did rather well and was very helpful in our discussions with our representatives. As for me, I’m very familiar with getting around in Washington and I felt comfortable that we all had gotten our requests and messages across. However, with the new administration, a lot has changed in Washington and congressional scheduling was one of the changes.

I was also fortunate to have all my traveling expenses paid for by the NAEMT, as my submission of a travel grant letter was one of the few selected nationwide.

I’m currently in the process of sending thank you letters to Senator Coons, Carper and Congresswoman Rochester reminding them of our recent visit and being available to meet with them in either Washington or here in Delaware for any future questions or needs.

Next year’s EMS on Capitol is tentatively scheduled for early April 2019.

NFFF Launches Survey on Suicide Prevention Efforts

The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation’s (NFFF) Everyone Goes Home (EGH) program is conducting a Needs Assessment to build effective suicide prevention and awareness programs. The NFFF has partnered with Dr. Sally Spencer-Thomas, a leading suicidologist with experience in developing innovative programs for first responders. As part of this assessment, Dr. Spencer-Thomas created a survey to gather feedback from fire service members (active, retired and non-uniformed), support groups (clinicians, EAP providers, chaplaincy groups, etc.) and family members.

“I am inspired to see how the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation is tackling the issue of suicide head on,” said Dr. SpencerThomas. “This approach of deep listening followed by thoughtful strategy development is key in making successful inroads into suicide prevention.”

The NFFF encourages fire departments to distribute the survey to its members and use it as an opportunity to share other resources like the Pocket Peer mobile app, the “ACT Now! Ask.Care.Take.” download-

The U.S. Department of Justice’s Bureau of Justice Assistance has opened the nomination period for the 2017-2018 Public Safety Officer Medal of Valor. This is the highest national award honoring firefighters, emergency service officers, and law enforcement officers across the country, including federal, state, local and tribal officers. The nomination period will remain open until 2359 (Eastern time) on Tuesday, July 31, 2018.

This award honors public safety officers who displayed exceptional acts of courage and decisiveness to protect human life, above and beyond the call of duty. To receive the Medal of Valor, public safety officers must be nominated by the chief executive officer of their employing agencies, recommended by the bipartisan Medal of Valor Review Board, and cited by the Attorney General. Each year, the medals are presented to the recipients at a special White House ceremony.

Fire Marshal’s Report Power Transformer Malfunctions in Selbyville Harry R. Miller, Chief Deputy State Fire Marshal The Delaware State Fire Marshal’s Office investigated a structure fire in Selbyville, DE. The incident occurred on April 23, 2018 at approximately 1545.

The fire was located at Mountaire Poultry plant, located in the unit block of Hoosier Street. Selbyville Volunteer Fire Company assisted by Frankford, Roxanna, Dagsboro, Millsboro, Millville, and several other volunteer fire companies responded to the scene to find heavy fire showing from the third-floor exterior area of plant. The structure was in operation at the time of the incident and no injuries were reported. The fire was reported under control at approximately 1750.

The investigation determined that the fire occurred because of a malfunction in a power transformer. Total fire damage is estimated at $500,000.

Three Explosive Devices Found in Newark Home Michael G. Chionchio, Assistant State Fire Marshal The Delaware State Fire Marshal’s Office investigated the discovery of three explosive devices inside a Newark, Delaware, home on May 8, 2018.

The explosive devices were found in the unit block of Hunting Ridge Road in the Country Creek development off of Walther Road around 1100.

The Delaware State Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit removed the devices and rendered the devices safe.

Deputy State Fire Marshals worked on the criminal investigation to bring this case to a successful conclusion. There were no injuries and no property damaged. Residents returned to their homes around 1930 that night.

Special agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives assisted in this investigation.

West Front Street in Milford at the Nice and Fresh Barbershop.

The Carlisle Fire Company of Milford responded to the call and arrived to fire coming from the first floor windows at the rear of the structure. Assistance was requested from several neighboring fire companies with an aggressive interior fire attack, by firefighters, to control the fire. The fire was placed under control at 0720, with no injuries reported.

The building has multiple occupancies, with business and mercantile on the first floor and apartment units on the second and third floors. No damage was sustained to the third-floor units, and only minor damage was sustained to a second-floor unit. The unit involved in the fire was the Nice and Fresh Barbershop, with an attached clothing store all run by the same tenant.

Deputy State Fire Marshals responded to the scene to conduct the investigation into the cause of the fire. Deputies determined an operating light fixture in the rear of the store failed and ignited combustible materials in the clothing store. Significant damage was sustained to the clothing store portion with smoke and water damage to the barbershop and the business unit next to the barbershop. Damages are estimated at $100,000.

The Houston Volunteer Fire Company responded to the scene and arrived to find fire inside the structure and on the roof. Assistance was requested from Carlisle, Harrington, Farmington, Felton, Greenwood and Bowers. Kent County EMS also responded.
