Do You Have a PIO? You just had a serious call that has lasted several hours.

Toward the end of the call, the dispatcher notifies the chief that the telephones are ringing off of the hook with the media asking questions. Are you ready to handle the flood of calls? Are you ready to give factual information to the public? Who speaks to the press in your department? Oh, wait a minute, screw the media; you don’t have to say anything! If you believe this, you are WRONG! If you ignore the media, the press will get information from a bystander that, typically, is incorrect ... at best. How about the bystander that tells the press it took forever for the fire department to arrive at the fire, or that they heard a person yelling for help and no one was there to help them? How about a HazMat call where the press is ignored and then assume the “facts.”

Who do you choose as a Public Information Officer to represent your department? On the surface, the answer is simple, but in reality it is quite difficult. You need a person who understands that being a PIO is a position that can make your department look good or look really bad. Remember, “anything you say, could be held against you in a court of law!”

Department PIOs should be able to express themselves clearly and be versed in the technical aspects of firefighting, which must be presented in a way that the public can comprehend. Does your PIO know how to operate and use various visual media including video recorders, audio recorders and still cameras? Can your PIO use a laptop computer for word processing and other related programs to get the word out to the public? Many departments utilize Facebook and their community’s Facebook page to let the public know what is going on. The public will become trained to check out your website and Facebook page to find out what is going on. (The use of Facebook in the fire service will be addressed in a future editorial.)

It is important to remember that PIO’s cannot speak about a situation without first going over it with the Chief of the Department. After all, the chief represents the department and will be questioned on statements that a PIO may have made without his permission. Many chiefs prefer to speak to the media themselves. In that case the PIO should prep the chief for the press. It becomes awkward when a chief says to the media, “I don’t know the answer to that question.”

As a PIO you must be several steps ahead of the media.

Having a press package prepared simplifies your job and keeps the press happy because you’re helping them with their job. If you have been chosen as your departments PIO, take a course with your state’s Office of Emergency Management or with your county’s training center. Being a PIO is a job that requires professional training. Include a scenario at your next drill, so the PIO can test his skills.

Enough Already

by Steve Austin Do you feel the way I do? I've had enough of the thieves who steal from fire departments, fire associations and fire unions.

These people who profess themselves to be our "brothers and sisters" are robbing us. Not only do they take the resources we need to do our jobs, they destroy the confidence the public has in us to control our own destiny. They create doubt in the minds of the public that if we can't protect our own bank account how can we protect our neighbors lives and property?

The sad part about it is that these people aren't white-collar criminals who devise sophisticated financial crimes to steal our money. They are petty thieves who see an opportunity to capitalize on a weakness in a fire company's financial system to rob us.

When they get caught, what do we do about it? In some cases, nothing. Often the betrayal is by a person everyone likes, so the immediate reaction is to keep the issue away from the news media and deal with it internally.

Thankfully, there are fire companies who suspect wrongdoing and bring in the big guns from the auditor's office and law enforcement to deal with the criminal activity.

Stealing, like other bad behavior, has a huge impact on the fire service. Bad behavior by a tiny minority of members erodes the high moral ground from beneath the feet of the entire fire service.

The DVFA has sponsored a number of fraud prevention offerings. DVFA officers are extremely concerned about the impact on our reputation statewide. You should be too.

A service of the Cumberland Valley Volunteer Firemen's Association (CVVFA), www.firefighterbehavior.com tracks bad, as well as good, behavior nationally on a daily basis. Check the site out. Stealing from fire companies seems to be a daily occurrence.

It really doesn't matter why these members do it. When caught, they always have lame reasons. They are behind in their mortgage payment. They have an

addiction. They gamble too much.

They were going to pay it back.

I'm sick of the excuses. These are common thieves who take advantage of the trust placed in them by the fire service to handle funds.

I've even heard the justification that we make it too easy for them, as if it's the fire companies' fault!

Most all of us are honest. I suspect that the large majority of us who would find a fellow members wallet would go to great lengths to give it back with all the money in it. When unscrupulous people steal from us, the fire company is the victim of the crime.

A thief is a thief. Having said that, fire companies are not relieved of the duty to protect the funds entrusted to them from theft and misuse. In a previous column I wrote about the fiscal responsibilities of directors and officers.

Preventing theft and embezzlement are part of those duties.

Just as a prudent person would not leave a valuable possession in plain view in an unlocked vehicle, we have a duty in the firehouse to lock stuff up and put plans into effect that will make the stealing of our money more difficult for the miscreants who masquerade as loyal fire company members.

This column isn't the place to enumerate how to safeguard bank accounts from these creeps. There are plenty of financial firms who can help with that. Our job is to rid all fire service institutions of this cancer. We need to be smart, vigilant and ask questions about how money is being handled before another criminal steals from us. When the crooks are caught they need to be expelled and prosecuted.

Lewes FD LODD Tim McClanahan

Tim McClanahan, a member of the Lewes Fire Department, passed away on July 11, 2016. Tim was a member of Delaware Air Rescue Team. He was also a member of the Sussex County Technical Rescue Team and an Instructor with the Delaware State Fire School. He tragically died on a training assignment with the air rescue team.

Tim served the Lewes Fire Department as an Assistant Chief, Captain, and Assistant Engineer among other offices. When he was the Marine Rescue Captain, he was instrumental in the purchase of the Lewes fireboat.

As an instructor with the fire school, Tim put his love for the fire service and his passion for teaching into every class he taught. I had the pleasure of working with Tim for the last six years in the Basic Firefighting Skills Program. There was nothing shy about Tim in front of the classroom. He may have told a few war stories but he could match wit with reality to deliver the lesson plan to his students.

Six years ago, Tim and Chief Gordon Davis of Lewes Fire Department helped create the Delaware Air Rescue Team, comprised of 18 firefighters and medics. Tim loved being part of the team and probably had more flight hours than any other member. He was always calm, professional and reassuring and was truly an asset to the team.

Tim died Monday evening, July 11. Tim had to be moved three times, each time escorted by fire apparatus. When he was moved to the ME’s office in Wilmington, on every overpass there were fire trucks with

American flags and saluting firefighters. The most impressive move was the return trip from Wilmington to Lewes, with 82 emergency vehicles in the escort. The convoy was led by a contingent of Delaware State Police motorcycles. Along the way were civilians standing with hands across their hearts or saluting and even a children’s day care with all the kids waving American flags.

During the week of mourning there was a steady stream of companies from all over the State of Delaware covering two of the Lewes Fire Stations, 24 hours a day. The Friday editorial in the local newspaper said it best, “The network, redundancy, coordination and dedication of all of these organizations working together and supporting one another for the benefit of all their communities is nothing less than amazing.”

Hundreds of firefighters and emergency services workers along with federal, state and local politicians attended his funeral service at Cape Henlopen High School.

On July 17, 2016, Tim’s casket was placed upon Engine 1 and the procession started its slow ride through the streets of Lewes. Along the way, in the canal, was Tim’s fireboat, with deck guns flowing, along with a Delaware State Police helicopter. The procession ended at Lewes Fire Station 1, with folding of the flag by the State Police Honor Guard, the sound of taps, the serenity of the fire siren, and the fly over by the helicopter. Conference Forms: All conference forms are on the website as PDFs into which you can enter your information directly from your computer making them easier for us to read. Once you have the information in, save a copy for your records and then e-mail, fax or mail the copies to the office. Once we start receiving more forms we will post the registrations on the website.

For the third year in a row, the DVFA is a Blue Ribbon sponsor of the Delaware State Fair through our SAFER Recruitment and Retention Grant. With the fair only a few weeks away, (July 21-30), the R&R Committee would like to ask for your help: Delaware State Fair: There are two shows scheduled Thursday, July 21 — the DVFAsponsored Monster Truck Event in the main grandstand and the Pro Rodeo Roundup in the Quillen Arena.

Tickets: There are tickets available to each show for companies that would like to provide a token of appreciation to members and their

families.

Apparatus: We are asking for assistance with some apparatus to show off on Opening Day. We will need five or six small units to stage on the plaza in front of the grandstand, and another five or six out on the track during the event.

Pit Passes: Please don’t forget that each station should have a packet of Pit Passes, which will allow holders of tickets to the Monster Truck Show to visit the track, trucks and drivers up close an hour before the event. These passes are to be made available to the public if and when requested and can only be obtained by visiting a Delaware Volunteer Fire Company!

The DVFA recruiting booth will be located in the same spot in the air-conditioned Marketplace Tent again this year. The booth will be staffed from 1100 to 2300 each of the 10 days, and we are seeking five outgoing people each day to help spread the word and recruit new Fire Service members! Workers will

by Joe Zeroles, President, DVFA It is hard to believe it has almost been 10 months since I took office as the President of the Delaware Volunteer Firefighters Association. It has been a whirlwind year and it doesn’t seem to be slowing down. We started off in the first week of May with the Congressional Fire Services Institute Annual Meeting and Dinner. I want to sincerely thank the 194 members of the DVFA who attended the dinner. It was a great tribute to a fine organization.

It is also been a sad couple of months. We lost Vice-President Ted Walius’ wife. Virginia was the rock in Ted’s life and will be truly missed. We also lost two of our premiere pastPresidents, Robert ‘Tater’ Sweetman and our oldest living past-President, Clarence Schwatka. They were two great men who served the DVFA well. I offer my sincere condolences to all of their families.

The legislative session has been a busy one for us. We introduced HB406, the Background Check Bill, and had an amendment put on HB302 adding $20 to the increased fines for cell phone usage. Both bills have passed the House and Senate on the last day of the session and we are awaiting the Governor’s signature.

I wanted to thank all the members of the General Assembly who sponsored those bills and voted to pass them. A special thank you to Representative Bill Carson for taking the initiative for the amendment on HB302. While we did not get the separate Grant-in-Aid bill, which we had requested, our Grant-in-Aid funding remained the same.

The last day of legislative session went into the wee hours of the morning. I want to thank the DVFA Officers and all the other fire service folks who were in Legislative Hall.

On May 24, we made a presentation to the National Highway Transportation Safety Board on Volunteer Fire Service BLS. They were in the State of Delaware for Delaware’s five-year review of our EMS system. Our presentation was a part of their review process.

On May 26, my husband and I attended the Delaware Academy of Public Safety and Security banquet at the Aetna Fire Company. It was a privilege to attend the event and present the top female cadet with an award. They are a great group of young men and women, and the school is a great recruitment for fire companies and auxiliaries.

On June 18, my husband and I had the pleasure of attending the Maryland State banquet in Ocean City. It was a pleasure meeting the officers of the Maryland delegation.

HB406: House Bill 406 passed the General Assembly on June 30. It exempts anyone from applying for membership for the cost of a background check done at SBI. The bill does not take effect until 90 days after the Governor signs the legislation. We will have further information on what you will need to give to SBI to verify the person is your applicant.

Hagley Museum for providing the free tickets to volunteer firefighters and their families for the Hagley Fireworks and Pyrotechnics show.

I wanted to congratulate Willard ‘Bill’ Betts on his installation as President of the Eastern Division of the International Association of Fire Chiefs. The DVFA officers and others from Delaware traveled to Verona (NY) for Bill’s Installation. I also want to congratulate the Marydel Fire Company on their 75th anniversary and Sussex County EMS for their 25th anniversary.

Lastly, I want to thank my fire company, the Farmington Fire Company, for their donation of a 1983 Rescue Truck and equipment to the Cross Timbers Volunteer Fire Company from Missouri. It is nice to know we can help our brothers and sisters who are in need.

The conference committee is hard at work getting Conference 2016 ready for all of you.

We have a great line up of exhibitors and it should be a good conference.

Dover House Fire

On July 2, 2016, the Dover Fire Department was alerted for a deck fire at the rear of a residence on Riverside Road. As units were responding, dispatch advised that the fire had spread into the adjoining structure. Engine 4, under the direction of Deputy Chief Ronald Rhodes, arrived to find a two-story, singlefamily dwelling, with fire showing at the rear of the structure and into the roof.

Due to the fire’s progression, command requested a full structural response from Camden-Wyoming. Engine 4’s crew established a water supply and advanced an attack line into the residence through the front door. Engine 6 arrived and pulled a second line to the rear of the residence and assisted with the interior attack. Ladder 2 arrived and laddered the structure, and the crew advanced another attack line to the second floor to assist. As additional units arrived, the utilities were secured and the fire was extinguished. The fire was placed under control in just over 30 minutes. The scene was turned over to the City of Dover FMO for investigation. Dover extends a special thanks to the BLS crew for keeping them hydrated, and to Camden-Wyoming for coming in force to assist.

Commercial Fire, HazMat Leak in Wilmington

On May 17, 2016, Wilmington City firefighters on the B-Platoon were dispatched to Garacshes Lane for a building fire. Upon arrival, units found a car being prepared for scrap, and a forklift, engulfed in flames. The fire impinged on the building’s exterior and spread vertically to the roof area where it ignited part of the roof structure.

The fire was quickly knocked down with minimal damage to the structure. A small portion of the roof area was cut away to ensure no extension. The incident commander Deputy Chief Michael Donohue placed the situation under control. After the fire was placed under control a 300-gallon barrel of antifreeze was discovered to be leaking. The incident commander contacted the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC) for the hazardous cleanup. Wilmington units remained on scene to assist DNREC with the cleanup. The origin and cause of the fire was investigated by the Wilmington Fire Marshal’s Office. Approximately 35 fire and EMS personnel responded, including Sky-boom 2, Engine 6, Squad 4, Engine 1, Ladder 2, Battalion 1, Battalion 2, F-1, F17, D2, D-3, B9, B10, St. Francis EMS, Wilmington License and Inspection, DNREC, Hazmat 30.

Trailer Fire on Turkey Point Road Firefighters responded to a trailer fire on the 3109 block of Turkey Point Road in Felton. Assists came from Camden and Magnolia along with Kent ALS. Deputy Chief Gary Moore had command.

2 for 1 in Minquadale

Minquadale Fire Company along with Holloway Terrace, Good Will, Wilmington Manor and Minquas were dispatched to a residential fire on Wildel Avenue in Minquadale. Units 228 and 223 arrived and reported smoke showing. Unit 223 advanced a hose line to the front door, and a secondary line was placed in service as

crews from 223 and 226 worked the fire. While crews were working, Minquadale was alerted to a reported kitchen fire on Chesterfield Drive in the Overview Gardens/Garfield Park community.

Command redirected Rescue 23, 18-2 and 205 from the fire scene to handle the second call.

On June 13, 2016, Laurel Station 81, Sharptown Station 14, and Delmar Station 74 were alerted for a structure fire with possible subjects trapped on West 7th Street in Laurel.

Life Member and past-Assistant Chief Greg Adkins, whose home is across the street from the location, responded on foot to the scene.

Adkins observed heavy fire in the rear of the structure and a neighbor alerted him that two small children were still inside the burning structure. Adkins made a quick size-up of the structure and forced entry into the front of the home by kicking in the locked front door. Once inside, he completed an interior search of the residence.

After his initial search yielded no results, he exited to be met by a neighbor who insisted that she knew two small children were still inside. Mr. Adkins reentered the home without any personal protective equipment and saw that fire was beginning to burn through interior walls, engulfing room and contents in flames. Atkins began calling out “Fire Department!” in a continued search for the children. At this time,

Laurel Life Member Carries Out Dramatic Rescue

two little girls who were hiding in a bedroom closet came running out and were assisted from the burning home by Adkins. As the trio safely exited the structure, the fire flashed, engulfing the home in flames. This all happened within minutes, as Laurel’s Engine 81-4 arrived on scene.

Adkins’ determination and selflessness kept the two little girls safe and alive. He singlehandedly prevented a tragedy through sheer bravery and a willingness to help others during severe circumstances. His actions are a testament to the courage and passion that defines Life Member Adkins.

The definition of hero is, “a man of distinguished courage or ability, admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities.” Adkins surely exemplifies the definition of a hero and the Laurel Fire Department is honored to be able to call him a brother in service.

Wind-Driven 3-House Blaze On June 12, 2016, Stations 55 (Magnolia), 41 (Camden) and 48 (Felton) were alerted for a structure fire. Engine 554 arrived a few minutes later under the direction of Chief Rhodes and advised they had a two-story, single-family home fully involved with exposures on both sides catching. Just a few minutes after that, command advised three homes were involved and requested two additional ladders, bringing Ladders 49 and 46. As mutual aid arrived, crews made aggressive attacks on the exposures but had little success due to strong winds. At this point, aerial master streams were placed in service. Units operated for an hour-and-a-half to bring the fire under control. The State Fire Marshal’s Office investigated the fire.

Rescue 45, Deputy Chief Davis, arrived to find Townsend, Middletown, Odessa and Smyrna with several lines in service and a fire in an attached garage. Original reports of a possible subject trapped were unfounded. The crew from Rescue 45 established RIT at the front of the residence until released by the OIC. Crews made quick work of the fire containing it to the garage.

Bethel Township Garage Fire

On June 4, 2016, a street assignment was dispatched for the area of Wisteria Way in Bethel Township for a building fire.

Ladder 13 responded with six, as Delaware County Communications advised a vehicle in an attached garage was involved. L13 landed second-due truck and initially assumed the RIT responsibilities until being put to work on division 2 with fire suppression.

Two Cats Perish in Angola Fire On the evening of May 24, 2016, the Rehoboth Beach Volunteer Fire Company was dispatched to a house fire in the 22000 Block of Cypress Drive, in Angola Neck Park, off of Camp Arrow Head Road. RBVFC was assisted by the Lewes, Indian River and Sussex County and Rehoboth Beach EMS. Upon arrival of the first Rehoboth Beach unit, heavy fire was showing from the rear of the structure. Firefighters made a quick knock down of the fire. No one was home at the time and there were no injuries, but two cats were found in the house. The Delaware State Fire Marshal Office investigated the cause.

Harrington Handles Deck Fire On June 9, 2016, the Harrington Fire Company was dispatched to an outside fire in the 1600 block of Ingram Branch Road. While responding, firefighters were advised that the fire was possibly involving a deck around a pool. Firefighters arrived and confirmed the deck was on fire around the pool and had started from embers from a nearby controlled burn.

Firefighters placed one line in service and extinguished the fire in approximately 10 minutes. The deck sustained moderate damage. The Officer in Charge was Deputy Chief Robbie Brode.

House

Recently, a rescue assignment was struck for an vehicle into a building in the Cambridge Gardens section of Christiana.

Claymont Units 3, 6 and 12 were dispatched along with USAR-13 with reports of a subject trapped. L6 arrived and crews began checking on the driver and the building’s stability. Christiana units started with struts and cribbing while EMS attended to patient care. The building was shored and victim extricated in 20 minutes.

3-Car MVC in Seaford

On June 14, 2016, Seaford Communications Center dispatched Seaford Fire and EMS along with ALS and aviation to the intersection of Old Furnace and Cokesbury Roads for an MVC with rollover. A-87, B87, and 87 Command arrived to find three-cars involved with one overturned. Rescue 87 and Engine 87-5 assisted with patient care and securing the vehicles. All patients were transported by ground with nonlife threatening injuries to Nanticoke Memorial Hospital.

Building; Building Wins On May 20, 2016, LFD was dispatched for its second MVC with extrication within 90 minutes. Tower 81 responded with Chief Mike Lowe as officer. Engine 81-2 responded with Assistant Chief Rob Givens as officer. Crews arrived to find a vehicle overturned into the north side of the building at an intersection.

A second vehicle had taken out the front support of the building.

One patient was transported to Nanticoke Memorial and three patient refusals were obtained by EMS crews from Laurel and Blades. The County Building Inspector was contacted.

MVC on DuPont Highway Stations 26, 1 and 27, 4 and 24 for the Ambulance, New Castle County Paramedic 5, Trooper 4, LifeNet, Kent County Medic KM6 and Delaware State Police were alerted to an MVC with multiple patients and entrapment at the intersection of Pine Tree Road and DuPont Highway. First units arrived and confirmed the report. Station 26 crews made quick work of the situation and extricated a person, while first aid was administered by the BLS crews. Two patients were flown to the hospital and the remaining injured were transported via ambulance.

2 Injured at Roxanna Head-on

On June 1, 2016, Roxana Volunteer Fire Company (Station 90) and Millville Volunteer Fire Company (Station 84), along with Delaware State Police Trooper 2 helicopter were dispatched to the scene of a head-on collision on Roxana Road at Peppers Corner Road. Crews were required to extricate one victim from a vehicle, who was then flown to the hospital by Trooper 2. The other injured was transported by ambulance.

Nice Save on Delaware Bay

On May 9, 2016, the Memorial Fire Company of Slaughter Beach was dispatched for a water rescue with subjects in the water. Bowers and South Bowers rescue boats plus the DSP Helicopter Trooper 2, Sussex County Paramedics and the Delaware Air Rescue Team in DSP Helicopter Trooper 5 also responded. With the Slaughter Beach fireboat not in service, Chief Terry Jester requested the services of the Delaware Bay Launch Service craft. Captain Dave Brown had the boat Big Stone Express ready when the rescue crew arrived.

Trooper 2 personnel threw a life ring to one victim; the other had been rescued by a passing fishing boat. When the Big Stone Express arrived at the capsized boat, rescuers entered the water and retrieved the victim. Both were suffering from hypothermia, were treated by EMTs and transported.

Dover AFB Gets New A/C Firefighting Vehicles

Dover AFB Fire Emergency Services has taken delivery of two Oshkosh Striker 3000 Ultra High Pressure (UHP) Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) vehicles. The P-23 UHP vehicles will replace aging P-23s that began entering service throughout the Air Force in 1994. The UHP is a 6 x 6 all-wheel drive vehicle carrying 3000 gallons of water, 420 gallons of AFFF and pounds of dry chemical. The firefighting system has a 1950-gpm Waterous pump, a bumper turret with a discharge rate of 310 gpm at 1450 psi and two 150-foot handlines; one for water/AFFF and one for the dry chemical system. These vehicles will be staffed daily with a minimum of two personnel and respond to all aircraft emergencies.

Before long, several children from around the neighborhood walked up and wanted to watch. Firefighters gave six kids tours of the fire trucks and had them all take turns operating the nozzle.

DELAWARE STATE FIRE SCHOOL

Fire School Assists with Recruit Training On April 5, 2016, the Delaware State Fire School began a program in conjunction with the New Castle County Firefighters Association conducting training for a recruit class. The class ran through the end of April and gave 28 students the opportunity to receive accelerated training, which allowed them to be recognized as a Firefighter Level II at the end of the class. Senior Instructor Jerry Brennan was responsible for the class and its successful outcome.

DSFS Places Engine in Service In March 2016, DSFS completed a year-long process to place in service its first new fire engine, a 2016 Pierce/Sabre with a 1250gpm pump and a 500-gallon tank. The engine will be used as a part of Company Officer, Driver Operator, Pump Class and other training as well as for public events. The engine was obtained through an AFG grant written by Senior Instructor Tucker Dempsey.

NCCPD’s 42nd Recruit Class at DSFS

The New Castle County Police Department’s 42nd Recruit Class attended the Delaware State Fire School on May 18 and 19, 2016, for their Law Enforcement Fire Survival Training. The 24 students in the class obtained their HazMat Awareness Certification. They also completed practical stations on the grounds involving ladders, fire extinguishers, sprinklers and emergency evacuation.

Eric Huovinen Retires from SCEMS Special Operations Coordinator Eric Huovinen has announced his retirement after 25 years of dedicated service with Sussex County EMS. Huovinen was hired in 1991 and graduated from the second Kent General Hospital paramedic class in 1992. He was extremely active during his career and served on multiple committees to include hazmat and mass casualty incident. To many, Huovinen’s most notable accomplishment was his work in the area of employee Line of Duty Death (LODD) or serious injury. After an area department experienced a LODD, Eric worked to develop internal guidelines to deal with LODD or serious injury at SCEMS. In addition to the department guidelines, the program allowed employees to complete paperwork that would assist loved ones and the department in the event of a serious injury or death.

Huovinen served as a District Supervisor before being promoted to the position of Special Operations Coordinator, the position from which he retired. Huovinen is also a long-time member of the Millville Fire Company where he has served in multiple positions to include Deputy Chief and Vice-President.

Eric looks forward to being able to dedicate more time to his favorite hobby of fishing.

SCEMS thanks and congratulates paramedic Eric Huovinen for 25 years of dedicated service to SCEMS and the citizens of Sussex County.

Glenn Marshall Promoted to Special Operations Coordinator Sussex County EMS is pleased to announce that Glenn Marshall has been promoted to the position of Special Operations Coordinator. Glenn has been with SCEMS for 19 years serving as Public Information Officer, Field Training Officer and District Supervisor. He has been active in many committees to include hazmat, fitness, bike, public information, education, relations, banquet, and 25th anniversary. He has received multiple awards to include Paramedic and Field Training Officer of the Year.

Glenn lives in Lewes with his wife Melanie and enjoys traveling and photography. He is a member of the Lewes Fire Department where he has held the position of EMS Chief, VicePresident, and is currently serving as EMS Captain. He is also a member of the Sussex County Technical Rescue Team and currently serves as the Team Captain.

SCEMS Announces Retirement of Larry Rock Paramedic Larry Rock has announced his retirement after 25 years of dedicated service with Sussex County EMS. Rock was hired in 1991 and graduated from the second Kent General Hospital, Class in 1992. Rock was extremely active during his career and was one of the original HazMat medics. He served as the team training officer, and remained active with the team until his retirement. He served on the media relations and chaplain committees. Rock also served as A-Shift District Supervisor during which time he developed the training calendar for the department.

He received multiple awards to include meritorious service, as well as multiple individual, unit and Phoenix awards.

Rock plans on further exploring his hobby of photography. SCEMS thanks and congratulates paramedic Larry Rock for 25 years of dedicated service to SCEMS and the citizens of Sussex County.

SCEMS’ Steve Zack Retires SCEMS would like to announce the upcoming retirement of Paramedic Steve Zack, after 25 years of dedicated service to Sussex County.

Zack was hired by Sussex County EMS and attended the second Paramedic class at Kent General Hospital. Zack completed the Paramedic program in 1992 and received high honors for academic achievement. He continued his education at Salisbury University where he obtained a BA in Economics.

Throughout his career with SCEMS, Zack held positions on several committees such as the fitness committee, 12-lead EKG committee, and the EQC committee.

Zack has also received multiple awards during his tenure with SCEMS. He was awarded a Unit Citation, an Individual Merit award and multiple Phoenix Life Saving awards.

Following his retirement, Zack plans on vacationing and indulging his love of fishing and golf. SCEMS would like to congratulate Paramedic Zack and thank him for his many years of dedication to SCEMS and the citizens of Sussex County.

Sussex County EMS Celebrates 25th Anniversary

Sussex County EMS celebrated its 25th anniversary with a banquet at the CHEER Center in Georgetown on May 15, 2016. The event capped off a weekend of events commemorating the occasion, and was well attended by past and current employees, and local and state dignitaries.

Guests were able to view uniforms, equipment, photographs and a history of the process of how SCEMS was placed in service. Guests were taken through a virtual timeline by past and current County Administrators, Medical and SCEMS Directors, with the review started by members of the appointed ALS committee. SCEMS thanks all that contributed to make SCEMS the system it is today and looks forward to celebrating 50 years of caring quality service.

Pioneers of the Delaware Fire Service This issue we are featuring a good friend to many of us, who may be small in stature but has a big heart. That person would be the one and only John P. Fox. John has been a fixture in the New Castle County fire service for many, many years, having joined the Mill Creek Fire Company in 1963. John served his country in the US Army. He attended many training programs at the old fire school when it was held in Camden-Wyoming and also attended many classes at the DSFS. John is also a member of the Aetna Hose, Hook and Ladder Company in Newark. In his 53 years with the Mill Creek Fire Company he has held the office of President; board of director member; First Assistant Chief and Deputy Chief, and is still active with Mill Creek. John was very active in many other organizations in New Castle County and the state, having served as President of the NCC Chiefs Association; New Castle County Volunteer Firemen’s Association; New Castle County Fire Police Association; and the Delaware State Fire Chiefs Association.

When John was President of NCCVFA and I was his 1st Vice-President, he told me, “Romig, just keep your mouth shut and do what I tell you!” I said yes, Mr. President. I believe Ray Krett was 2nd Vice President at the time. We had a couple of good years with that crew.

John has always been very outspoken and says what he feels regardless of whether he made people glad or mad! He would always point at you to make sure that you knew he was talking about you or to you. John stills attends the county fire police meetings to make sure that they are doing things as they should be,

By Bob Romig and is usually at the county firefighter meetings, as well.

John is also an active member of the Delaware Valley Fire Chiefs Association; Cumberland Valley Volunteer Firemen’s Association; and the Delmarva Fireman’s Association. He is usually accompanied by some of the other members of MCFC and/or

his daughter Patricia (above). He and one of his mentors, Larry Mergenthaler, travel around to the meetings out of state every once in a while, as well.

John mentioned that his most memorable fire was the mansion fire at Carousel Farms. I can’t really remember any fires that I was on with John, but he was probably at many that I ran. John said that he joined the fire service for something to do. I believe that from his record he did more than that. He made it a point to

lead some of the greatest organizations in New Castle County.

A lot of the older fellows remember John’s squeaky voice from the 911 center for his 32 years of service. After retiring from the call board (that’s what is was called back then) he went on to work for the DRBA for 12 years in the maintenance department.

In 2013 John was awarded Firefighter of Year by the NCCVFA and, coincidentally, his daughter Patricia, then Assistant Chief with the Aetna Hose, Hook and Ladder Company, was named Firefighter of the Year by NCCVFA in 2015. John said that was probably the most memorable moment in his fire service career.

Patty was always there to pin on any new badge he acquired.

I asked John who some of his mentors or folks who inspired him to do what he did for the fire service and some of those names would be Dave Rambo and Bill Clark of Station 16; Joe Hojinicki of Station 22 and, of course, one of his best buddies, Larry Mergenthaler of Station 21.

John’s words of wisdom to the younger generation are to, “Become a member, be active and learn as much as you can, as you are never too old to learn something new.”

Through all of this fire service he has had as his best friend and sidekick (in addition to Patricia) his lovely wife Ann who is a member of the Cranston Heights Fire Company.

John, I really miss attending meetings and messing with you, but you know it is all in fun.

You have been a good friend of mine since I joined FPFC in 1970, and I hope that we continue to be friends.

Aetna Hose Celebrates 42nd Annual Emergency Services Week

Aetna’s renowned Chefs Ralph Tucker and Dan Seador grilled pork, hamburgers and hot dogs at a barbecue held at Fire Station 8. EMS Lt. Chris Zistl led a recently formed, Feeding the Finest crew — a group of Aetna members — in creating numerous side dishes. Desserts and giveaway items were donated by Bing’s Bakery, Rita’s Water Ice, Green Turtle, Duck Donuts, Iron Hill Brewery, Klondike Kate’s, Claymont Steak Shop, Malin’s Market and Deli, National 5 and 10, Cold Stone Creamery and Grotto Pizza.

Amy Fitzgerald, the Deputy Chief of EMS at Aetna, said, “The purpose of EMS Week is to ensure that the contributions of EMS practitioners — those people on medicine’s front lines — are celebrated and fully

recognized. EMTs and paramedics safeguard the health, safety and well being of the citizens in their communities.”

Aetna Fire Chief Drew Bowerson said, “EMS Week is an opportunity to publicize the contributions of the members of Aetna Hose, Hook and Ladder Company to the Newark community. Our firefighters and EMTs work together closely at emergency scenes. With close to 9,000 EMS calls for service annually, it is not uncommon to see a fire engine and an ambulance both at the scene of a medical emergency in Newark.”

The barbecue attracted Aetna members and their families, local business sponsors, and officers and members of surrounding fire and EMS companies.

Checking Out the New Birds in Town

On June 13, 2016, Roxana Volunteer Fire Company was visited by both Trooper 2 of the Delaware State Police and by the LifeNet medical helicopter, both based in Georgetown. Trooper 2 landed at the fire company’s helipad with the new Bell 429, multi-equipped for both medical/rescue and police applications. Department members received instructions on loading and off-loading patients, as well as the search and rescue capabilities of the helicopter. LifeNet landed at the fire station with its new MBB/Kawasaki BK117 helicopter. Members were able to tour the helicopter and learn of its capabilities and received instructions relating to loading and offloading patients.

Obituary

Townsend’s Clarence A. Schwatka Clarence A. Schwatka, Jr., 98, of Townsend, passed away on Saturday, June 11, 2016, after a year-long illness.

Clarence was an 80-year Life Member of the Townsend Volunteer Fire Company.

He honorably served his country in the US Army during World War II, served as Townsend Postmaster and 26 years as Chief Sergeant-at-Arms in the Delaware Senate. He was also a member of the Middletown VFW Post # 3792, American Legion, David C. Harrison Post # 14, Smyrna, and the NARFE Chapter 1174, Dover, DE. His greatest passion was his 80-year membership in volunteer fire service. His active service with the Townsend Fire Company, whose building is named for

him, was his crowning glory. He held many offices throughout the county and state in those 80 years.

He is survived by his wife of 78 years Beulah Burris Schwatka, one daughter Joyce Ann Golt of Dover, three grandchildren, Michael R. Golt of Dover, Kimberly B. Knotts (Frank) of Bridgeville, DE, and Sean C. Golt (Diana) of Dover, five great grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren.

Annual Cadet Awards at DAPSS

Class of 2016 Top Cadet Lee Ridgeway is congratulated by Acting School Lead Herbert Sheldon as best overall student in this year’s DAPSS senior class.

On June 1, 2016, the Delaware Academy of Public Safety and Security (DAPSS) held its annual Cadet Awards Ceremony, recognizing the accomplishments of students in grades nine through 12 with 96 awards for academics, leadership and service. In addition, 10 cadets from the Class of 2017 received their class rings as part of the ceremony.

The first-of-its-kind public charter school in Delaware opened in 2011 with 100 ninth-grade cadets. DAPSS cadets live the mission of ‘Diligence to Succeed, Scholarship in the Classroom, and Fidelity to Others,’ in keeping with the school’s goal of educating those who are the future of public service in Delaware. Students receive certifications in CPR/AED, Law enforcement, Fire 1 and Pro Board Haz-Mat, as well as EMT or EMR. The academy graduated its first class in 2015.

This year’s awards ceremony began with a special presentation to the school by representatives of the

Delaware Fire Service. Tom DiCristofaro of the State Fire Prevention Commission; Les Warrick, President of the New Castle County Volunteer Firefighters’ Association; and Mark Willis, Vice-President of the New Castle County Fire Chiefs’ Association, presented an automated blood pressure training device for use in Emergency Medical Services curriculum.

The coveted Top Cadet award was presented to the best student in each of the four grades. For 2016, the ninth grade award was presented to Thomas Riale; the 10th grade award went to Peter Bowers; the 11th grade winner was Angelica Fernandez; and the 12th grade award was presented to Lee Ridgeway.

Leipsic Annual Blessing of the Fleet 2016 The Leipsic Volunteer Fire Company hosted the annual Blessing of the Fleet ceremony at the Leipsic River Dock. Lay Reader Samantha Boots, Auxiliary member of the Leipsic Volunteer Fire Company and the Roby United Methodist Church of Leipsic, broadcasted a prayer via marine radio (Channel 80) to the many mariners working the Bay. This tradition is performed in many fishing villages to pray the mariners are taken care of and they come back with a plentiful harvest.

The Blessing of the Fleet ceremony was created centuries ago and is a common practice by

mariners around the world. This blessing and ceremony also represents emergency responders who operate, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. A superb feast was prepared by the Leipsic Auxiliary for all.

On May 4, 2016, Five Points member Omar Rivera, a Staff Sergeant with the Delaware Air National Guard, was welcomed home from deployment supporting Operation Freedom Sentinel.

SSgt. Rivera has been deployed since October 20, 2015.

He was assigned to the vehicle maintenance shop where they maintain and repair the refueling trucks that keep our fighter jets “taking care of business,” as he puts it.

Lewes Lowe’s Hosts Children’s Safety Event On June 25, 2016, the Sussex County Coalition of Safekids conducted its annual Safety Day at Lowe’s of Lewes. The event has been honored nationally by Lowe’s as a model of public involvement for their stores. This year an estimated 1000 people visited the site and participated in interactive activities, petting zoos, Fire Department demonstrations, saw the State Police K-9 unit as well as LifeNet. Safekids would like to thank the Lewes, Rehoboth Beach, Selbyville and Greenwood Fire Companies for participating, as well as Sussex County EMS and Mid-Sussex Rescue.

Laurel Resident Receives Scholarship At the May meeting of the Philadelphia-Delaware Valley Chapter of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers, Allison Lowe of Laurel and Odessa, received a scholarship for her work with Eastern Kentucky University. Pets Saved Again in Christiana On May 20, 2016, firefighters rescued five cats from a residential fire in the Timberlane Trailer Park in Christiana. Aetna Hose, Hook and Ladder sent an engine and ladder company to assist Christiana with suppression. Aetna Ambulance A7 responded for EMS standby and firefighter rehab, but A7’s crew soon found themselves thrust into a different role, as Christiana firefighters brought rescued cats to A7 for care. A7’s crew used recently donated pet oxygen masks to treat the distressed felines. The pet oxygen delivery kits have three sizes of masks specifically designed to fit different size dogs or cats. These pet rescue kits are carried on each of Aetna’s 6 ambulances. A Newark-based web company, Hosting.com, in an effort to give back to the community, spearheaded a company fund drive to purchase the pet oxygen masks for Aetna. A7 was staffed by Firefighter/EMT Kyle Mench, Firefighter/EMT Aubrey Eveland, and a Firefighter Marissa Berlant from Delaware City Fire Company. The fire was the fourth time that Aetna has used the pet oxygen devices.

Dover Air Force Base Military Firefighter Selected for Promotion On May 25, 2016, Dover AFB FES received some good news regarding military promotions. Technical Sergeant Ryan Atoigue was notified that he has been selected for promotion to the rank of Master Sergeant. TSgt. Atoigue has served on active duty in the USAF for 17 years. He arrived at Dover in 2014 and will assume the duties as one of two Assistant Chief’s for Operations. Apparatus Blessing at Aetna Aetna Hose, Hook and Ladder Company of Newark celebrated International Firefighter Day with a special event. May 4 is the Feast of St Florian, the Patron Saint of Firefighters.

Atlantic Emergency Solutions announced that Joe Pack, President and CEO, has been named a recipient of an EY Entrepreneur of the Year Award (EOY) for the mid-Atlantic region.

The group consists of family and friends who are devoted to funding prevention, education, and researching the causes and potential cure for autism.

To date, Herre’s Gang has successfully raised close to $30,000.

Just a Regular Day at the Firehouse On May 14, 2016, Minquadale Fire Company opened its doors for the state-wide Recruitment Open House. Volunteers spent the day teaching the community how to use a fire extinguisher and gave out free smoke detectors and fire prevention bags. Visitors were able to see members in action as they responded to a six-vehicle accident on the Interstate during the event. When the crews returned, they went right back to work giving station tours and showing off the trucks.

Dover Air Force Base Civilian Firefighter Promoted On May 5, 2016, Dover AFB Fire Emergency Services held a promotion ceremony for one of their civilian firefighters. Assistant Chief for Operations Joseph S. Mriss was promoted to the position of Deputy Fire Chief. Chief Mriss has served with the base fire department since December 1993, starting as a Driver/Operator. In 1998 he was promoted to Battalion Chief for Special Operations and in 2003 was promoted to Assistant Chief for Operations. He is also a Life Member of Carlisle Fire Company of Milford where he has held several positions on the Board of Directors and served as a fire line officer. Schulties Graduates Paramedic Prog.

The Terry Farrell Firefighters Fund of Delaware would like to congratulate one of its own, Director Greg Schulties, on his graduation from the Chesapeake College Paramedic program.

Greg has been a Director of the Delaware Chapter since its creation in 2009, and is a valuable asset to the foundation, serving as the financial director. Greg recently was employed by the Camden-Wyoming Fire Company as a career firefighter/EMT for 10 years. He also is a volunteer firefighter at the Felton Fire Company where he is an Assistant Chief and on the Board of Directors.

Greg is now a Kent County Delaware Paramedic currently advancing through the FTO program.

We are so proud of Greg, and continue to support him through his career. Greg resides in Felton with his wife Jordan, daughter Avery, and son Colton.

Aetna Welcomes an Old Friend and Makes Room for a New Arrival

The first week of May at the Aetna Hose, Hook and Ladder Company saw the oldest surviving motorized Aetna engine, a 1921 Stutz (refurbished in 1937) return to Newark after an absence of 50 years. It met its youngest sibling, a new arrival, a 2016 Pierce 75-foot Quint, which was formally housed during a ceremony at Station 7.

In his remarks at Quint 7’s housing, Chief Drew Bowerson spoke about Aetna’s 128 years of service to the community and urged Aetna’s newer firefighter/EMTs to appreciate the sacrifices that those members who had gone before them made to the building the company and serving the people of Newark.

The Stutz was purchased from collector Rodger Birchfield of Indiana for $1 and paid for with a 1921 silver dollar.

The Pierce Quint was over $800,000 more than the Stutz. It was paid for by check, which was greatly appreciated by VP Brian Bashista of Atlantic Emergency Solutions who sold the Quint to Aetna. The new

fire truck is classified as a Quint because it has five firefighting capabilities. It has a 2,000-gpm pump a 500-gallon water tank, 1,000 feet of large diameter supply hose, sports a 75-foot aerial device, and has 120 feet of ground ladders. Chief Bowerson said, “We need apparatus that can function in multiple roles to best serve the community. Our new Quint 7 enables Aetna firefighters to fill whatever roles may be needed on the fire ground.”

Upon placing the new fire truck in service, the Aetna membership celebrated an age old tradition of ‘housing’ the apparatus, a tradition in the fire service where firefighters push a new fire truck into the fire station for the first time. Aetna members ‘pushed’ Quint 7 into the fire station, but at a little over 28 tons, apparatus driver Gene Niland was the compelling force for the evening.

New Castle County Fire Service Supports Special Olympics

Over the Edge, co-sponsored by TD Bank, Brandywine Realty Trust and New Castle County Fire Service, is a unique fundraising event -and the only one of its kind in Delaware -- allowing colleagues or friends the opportunity to raise money and "send" yourself or a friend, or a boss or colleague, rappelling 17 stories (222 feet) "Over the Edge" of a building to raise money and awareness for Special Olympics Delaware. This year's event was held on May 12, 2016. In total the 87 "Edgers" raised $135,000. "Edgers" from the New Castle County Fire Service included: Harry Bight, Delaware City Fire Company, Richard Perillo, Christiana Fire Company and New Castle City Police, Richard Perillo, Sr., Brandywine Hundred Fire Company and DVFA 2nd Vice President, and Les Warrick, Cranston Heights Fire Company and

President of the New Castle County Firefighter's Association. A check for $11,700 was presented to Special Olympics Delaware by the New Castle County Fire Service at the New Castle County Fire Chief's and Firefighter's Association's joint meeting held at the Elsmere Fire Company's banquet hall on the evening of May 12th. The check was accepted by Special Olympics athlete Matt Montgomery and Lisa Smith, Director of Development for Special Olympics Delaware.

Delaware Forest Service Awards Volunteer Grants

Smokey Bear joined Leipsic Volunteer Fire Company’s chief Mike Greco as he accepted a $1938 grant from the Delaware Forest Service’s Kyle Hoyd, who administers the agency’s wildland fire program. The check is part of a matching grant program to help volunteer fire companies purchase tools and equipment to fight wildfires in their communities.

The Delaware Forest Service (DFS) has awarded $22,000 in grants to eight volunteer fire companies to purchase equipment to fight wildfires and improve their wildfire readiness and capabilities. In the past 10 years, the DFS has provided 122 grants totaling more than $288,000 to many of Delaware’s 60 volunteer fire companies through its Volunteer Fire Assistance Grant Program, funded by the U.S. Forest Service. The following companies received the awards.

While applicants must offer a minimum of 50 percent in cost-share match for its request, many provide much more, which resulted in every federal dollar being matched with $1.61 in spending

from the recipient. The grants help underwrite the cost of useful items and equipment to help volunteer firefighters meet the unexpected and often unpredictable threat of wildfires in fields, forests, open spaces, and marshes. Funds can be used to purchase items such as Nomex - the lightweight fire-resistant clothing used by wildland firefighters - or necessary equipment such as two-way radios, hoses, drip torches, flashlights, pumps, hoses, gloves, boots or chainsaws.

The 60 volunteer fire companies in the First State are extremely vital to the mission of the Delaware Forest Service as they provide much of the manpower and equipment to fight wildfires in the state. In fact, many members of Delaware’s wildland fire crew who help battle blazes in the western United States are drawn from the ranks of local volunteer fire companies.

In the past fiscal year, the Delaware Forest Service assisted 43 of Delaware’s 60 volunteer fire companies (72 percent) either through wildfire suppression, loaning of equipment, or training. In addition to the fire assistance grants, the Delaware Forest Service also provides funding to help provide basic wildland firefighting courses for volunteer firefighters. This year, $12,000 was spent in association with the Delaware State Fire School to help offset the costs of basic training courses for a total of 138 wildland firefighters.

Boots Best Badges in Blood Battle A successful 2015 inaugural campaign pitting firefighters against police in an altruistic competition to generate blood donations for the Blood Bank of Delmarva will lead to a rematch.

A partnership between the Delaware House of Representatives and the Blood Bank, the “Boots and Badges” campaign ran throughout the month last May. State House Minority Leader Danny Short (R-Seaford), and State Rep. William Carson (D-Smyrna), led the Boots Team. Rep. Short is a past-Chief of the Seaford Volunteer Fire Department, and Rep. Carson is a past-Chief of Smyrna Fire Department (Citizens’ Hose Co.).

Leading the Badges were two former members of the Delaware State Police: Speaker of the House Pete Schwartzkopf (D-Rehoboth), and State Rep. Steve Smyk (R-Milton-Lewes).

Blood Bank of Delmarva Account Executive Alexis Innis said the Boots topped the Badges, with the former collecting 45 pints of blood to 25 produced by the latter. “The

Still, there are bragging rights at stake and Mrs. Innis recently presented Reps. Short and Carson with the Boots and Badges Blood Drive Champion Cup at the Blood Bank’s Dover headquarters.

“Like any good summer feature, I’m looking forward to the sequel this year,” Rep. Short said. “This is a pretty good looking cup. It’ll look even better with another Boots’ win etched on its side this year.”

The Badges will have an extended opportunity to regain their honor in 2016.

Mrs. Innis says this year the Boots and Badges Campaign will run concurrently with the Blood Bank’s Summer Blood Challenge, May 16 through Sept 24. That four-month effort will include a blood drive at Legislative Hall on Thursday, June 9 from 0900 to 1200.

“I think firefighters, their friends, and families can do much better this year,” Rep. Carson said. “Not only do I think we’ll be hanging onto the cup, but I also suspect we’ll significantly improve on last year's performance.”

The Blood Bank of Delmarva serves 1.6 million people in Delaware; Cecil County, Maryland; and throughout the Eastern Shore.

Honoring Our Military A little rain didn’t s t o p t h e S m y r n a Clayton community from paying respect t o t h e m e n a n d women of the United States military who paid the ultimate sacrifice to defend our freedom.

Usually, the community comes together for a parade, which is followed by a memorial service at the Smyrna Clayton Veterans Memorial, but because of rain, the parade was cancelled and the ceremony was held in that the Clayton Fire Company. Representatives from different community-based organizations took part in the ceremony that honored each branch of the military.

Where’s My Turkey Soup?

With Firehouse Kitchen Host Ray Cooney

While filming the sixth season of Firehouse Kitchen, I set up a very special shoot at Long Island Cares in Hauppauge (hop-pog), New York. Long Island Cares is a foundation that provides meals to people in need. On Long Island alone, there are about 87,000 children who do not know where their next meal is coming from. Long Island Cares is here to help end this epidemic.

When I heard about this charity, I knew we had to get Firehouse Kitchen involved.

I met with the head of the foundation, Paul Pachter, and while visiting him saw the kitchen at their headquarters. It was amazing! The kitchen set up and spotless stainless steel appliances were perfect for a filming.

The kitchen was donated by Dunkin’ Donuts and Lifetime Brands. I asked Paul what the kitchen was used for. “We give seminars on cooking and nutrition to families with a tight budget,” he said. Paul explained how macaroni and cheese, and cereal can go a long way, but it’s not the most nutritious for kids.

Paul and staff show people that there are other alternatives, using the same budget, yet getting the right nutrition for the children.

The recipe for today’s article is from Medford Firefighter Jean Dowd. Two days before we started shooting at Long Island Cares, one of my (FDNY) firefighters had to cancel. I put a blast out on Facebook asking any firefighter if they’d be interested in appearing on Firehouse Kitchen, and Jean came to my rescue. With 18 years on the job,

Jean had tons of good stories. My favorite one was for this recipe called “Where’s my turkey soup?” After having a Thanksgiving meal in the firehouse, there was about 20 pounds of turkey left over. Jean was going to make a turkey soup for the next department meeting. When she arrived a few hours before to make the soup, all the turkey was gone! Somebody had thrown them away! In a panic, and pressed for time, Jean went through the refrigerator and found hamburger meat and breakfast sausage. Jean said to me (something I say a lot on the show), “Present a firefighter with a problem and they will always find a solution.” Jean ground up the hamburger and sausage meat, retrieved some other spices and broth and presto! Turkey (or not so turkey) soup! It was delicious!

On days like this, it’s good to be Firefighter Ray. When I meet people like Paul Pachter, the staff and all the volunteers at Long Island Cares, it shows me that there are still a lot of good people in the world. WHERE'S MY TURKEY SOUP 2 quarts chicken stock 2 28 oz. cans crushed tomatoes 3 tablespoons oregano 3 tablespoons basil 1 bag carrots 1 bunch celery 2 medium onions 1 lb. ground beef 1 lb. bulk sausage 1/2 cup orzo pasta Heat stock and tomatoes over high heat in a large pot. Chop vegetables into big chunky pieces. Add to liquids. Add oregano and basil. Bring to a boil. Once boiling, reduce heat to simmer.

Crumble and brown both meats. Add meat mixture to pot and let simmer for 30 minutes.

Add orzo and cook additional 10 minutes or until vegetables are soft.

Serve and enjoy!

HOW HANG-DRY BECAME A REALITY Before starting Hang-Dry I worked as a commercial diver. The hassle of getting back into a wetsuit after a previous dive was always difficult, uncomfortable, wet, cold and sticky.

I had tried washing them by hand and letting them air-dry, but it just took forever. To make matters worse, my mind always wandered as I got into a damp wetsuit thinking about what might be growing inside my dark wetsuit and definitely did not make me feel comfortable.

While working as a commercial diver I would spend my free time riding motorcycles, doing track days and later on moving to road racing for over 10 years. I would do anywhere from eight to 10 races every weekend, and by the end of it my race suit was always saturated with perspiration and sometimes rain.

Like my wetsuits for diving, I tried to stop the odor and bacteria by washing my suits after my weekend races. It took too much time to air dry and I was concerned with just leaving it to air/sun dry.

As I looked for my own way to dry my suits, I did a lot of research about the effects of perspiration and bacteria growth within unventilated materials like leather, Nomex, neoprene and others. From there, Hang-Dry was born - directly inspired by wanting to help others find a safe solution to drying their suits and gear.

The first Hang-Dry that was ever built (I still have it!) was made of chicken wire fence, lots of duck tape, a fan, a wire, two bolts, a pipe, a bungee hook - yes, a bungee hook - and a whole lot of creativity. It took a long time and hard work for Hang-Dry to get to where it is now but I made sure that no corners were cut. I wanted the best of everything in the Hang-Dry dryer so it could withstand just about anything. And, with help from so many great people along the way, I am also proud to say it is MADE IN THE USA! Fire Marshal’s Report Equipment Malfunction Sparks Fire in New Castle

One Resident Transported from Cheswold Fire

Michael G. Chionchio, Assistant State Fire Marshal The Delaware State Fire Marshal's office has determined that building fire on June 24, 2016 in New Castle, Delaware was accidental.

The Good Will Fire Company responded to 500 Centerpoint Boulevard, Centerpoint Industrial Park, shortly after 0700 for a fire alarm activation at Nixon Uniforms. Firefighters encountered an active fire inside the building.

Deputy Fire Marshals were called to the scene to conduct the investigation. The fire was caused by a malfunction inside a commercial ironing unit that was operating inside the building. The fire was contained to the unit. There was no structure damage.

One employee was transported to the Christiana Hospital in good condition suffering from smoke inhalation. A second employee was treated at the scene and not transported. Fire damage was estimated at $250,000.

B. Scott Bullock, Chief Deputy State Fire Marshal The Delaware State Fire Marshal’s Office investigated a building fire that occurred on June 8, 2016, in Cheswold, DE, in Kent County. The fire was reported at 0340 in the 200 block of Commerce St. Firefighters from the Cheswold Fire Co arrived on scene with heavy fire and smoke coming from several second floor windows. Assistance was requested by several neighboring fire companies to assist with fire suppression operations. The fire was placed under control at 0430.

The structure has several second floor bedrooms that served as apartments that were occupied at the time of the fire. All occupants escaped the fire, with a 53 year old female sustaining smoke inhalation and was transported in critical condition to Kent General Hospital, and later transported to Chester Crozer Burn Center in PA. The Red Cross of Delmarva responded to assist the remaining displaced occupants. Damages are estimated at $50,000.

Multiple Homes Damaged by Fire in Magnolia

Robert L. Fox, Chief Deputy State Fire Marshal The Delaware State Fire Marshal’s Office has determined that house trailer fire In Bear, DE was accidental.

The Christiana Fire Company responded to the 500 block of Vincent Lane in the Waterford Trailer Park shortly after 0830, on May 13, 2016 for a trailer fire. Upon arrival the Fire Department found smoke and fire coming from the trailer. Additional Fire Departments were called to assist.

Deputy Fire Marshals were called to the scene and determined that the fire originated in the living room area of the trailer and was caused by the victim smoking while using oxygen igniting surrounding combustibles.

The approximately 60 year old resident of the trailer was critically injured and was transported to Christiana Care Emergency Department

by New Castle County Paramedics and Fire Department EMS. The victim was treated for smoke inhalation.

The fire caused approximately $20,000 damage to the residence. No other injuries were reported.

Alan Brown, Assistant State Fire Marshal Delaware State Fire Marshal Deputies conducted an investigation into a house fire in Magnolia DE that occurred on Sunday June 12, 2016 and caused heavy damage to the two story single family dwelling. The fire also caused exposure fire damage to nearby dwellings.

The Magnolia Volunteer Fire Company responded to the 100 block of Viola Drive, Magnolia DE shortly after 1700 for a report of a house fire.

Firefighters arrived to find heavy fire coming from the dwelling.

The house was unoccupied at the time of the fire. The Magnolia Fire Company was assisted by neighboring fire companies who fought the blaze for several hours before bringing it under control.

There were no reported injuries. Occupants of the nearby dwellings were being assisted by the American Red Cross of Delmarva. Fire damage is estimated over $500,000.00
