Revitalize Your Fire Prevention Program How do you give back to your community?

With October upon us, it is easy to give back to the people you protect by giving them a well organized and exciting Fire Prevention Program during National Fire Prevention Week.

The NFPA has a great website that all of us should visit to help you organize your Fire Prevention Program. Does your department’s program have a specific goal in mind? Are you highlighting the points that can save lives?

When fire is discovered in a home, every second counts when all of us have to get out of our home. Seconds can mean the difference between the residents of our community escaping safely from a fire or having their lives end in tragedy. Your program should reinforce why everyone needs to have an escape plan. When you meet with your community, it is imperative that you reinforce what to do when a smoke

alarm or carbon monoxide detector sounds or a fire occurs in the home. Reinforce how much time you have to get out. Make sure everyone who attends your fire prevention program knows who to call and what to say to the operator or dispatcher.

Every year, families flock to their local firehouse to observe the many displays and programs about fire safety. I encourage departments that have a fire prevention program to spend a few minutes and write down what your goals and objectives are. One of the most important things you can teach families, is what to do when they exit a house that is on fire.

Occupants must remember to close the door to a room that is on fire. This single action can save lives by containing a fire.

Every year I remind myself of the fires I have responded to at my local colleges, keeping in mind the Boland Hall fire that was in a fresh-

man residence at Seton Hall University on January 19, 2000, one of the deadliest college fires in recent US history.Bring your Fire Prevention Program to your schools, colleges and senior centers.

I hope you are ready to take on one of the single most important things we can do as first responders — educating your community about fire safety. Don’t be afraid to ask tough questions that can save lives. Good luck with your 2019 Fire Prevention Program! …Dennis

On November 8, 2019, the NYC Fire Museum will be holding their annual FDNY Cook-off at the museum. Chefs from FDNY Fire and EMS will be competing against one another. Guests will get to sample the dishes.

Ticket price is $100 ($50 for FDNY members) and includes unlimited food, beer and wine. This is the Fire Museum’s annual fundraiser which helps maintain the museum and fulfill the museum’s mission to “Preserve, Educate and Celebrate the FDNY.” The entire museum is open to the guests of the event. CENTRAL ISLIP FIRE PREVENTION OPEN HOUSE

The Central Islip Fire Department will be holding its annual fire prevention week open house on Friday, October 11, 2019, from 1800 to 2100.

This annual event will be held at the Central Islip Fire Department’s Station 2, located at 110 Wheeler Road, in Central Islip.

There will be many fire prevention displays, demonstrations, a free child ID Program, poster, contest winner's recognition as well as free giveaways and fire safety educational materials. All are invited to this informative and fun filled evening.

Cover Story

1 Burned at Babylon Boat Fire

The Babylon Fire Department was called for a boat fire at the rear of a business on Fire Island Avenue on September 3, 2019. Units arrived to find numerous boats burning and threatening to spread to other boats and a building. Engine crews stretched multiple handlines and used a deck gun to knock down the heavy fire. The crew from Ladder 1-2-8 opened up the boats to expose areas of fire. It took about an hour to bring the fire under control.

A person working in one of the boats suffered burns.

Mutual aid came from West Islip, North Babylon and West Babylon for an ambulance. Members removed a dog from the second floor. The damage to the building was kept to the exterior. Chief of Department Golub was in charge.

1 Burned in Middle Island Blaze

At approximately 2315 on August 7, 2019, authorities were notified of a fire in a garage attached to a house on West Bartlett Road, just north of Barbara Lane. Gordon Heights and the SCPD responded.

Mutual aid came from Yaphank, Middle Island, and Coram. At least one civilian was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital with burns.

North Babylon House Fire

The North Babylon Fire Company was called to a house fire on Longfellow Avenue in the early evening of August 23, 2019. Third Assistant Chief Alt arrived to fire showing from the front of the house and all of the occupants out. Engine 1-8-4 stretched two lines and the crew from 1-8-6 vented and searched the house. The fire was brought under control within an hour, and two adults and two children were taken to Good Samaritan Hospital for evaluation. Also responding were West Islip, Deer Park and Babylon.

Electrical Box Fire in Roslyn

The Roslyn Fire Department responded to a house fire on Kings Drive on August 30, 2019.

Smoke was visible in the rear of the home and a fire was located near the main electrical service.

Solar Panel Fire in Massapequa

On the afternoon of August 23, 2019, the Massapequa Fire Department responded to a reported house fire on Pittsburg Avenue in Massapequa. Engine 6311 was first on scene and stretched a line for a solar panel fire on the roof of the home.

Ladder 636 put their platform into operation to work on the panel and check for fire extension. The fire was confined to the roof area.

Long Stretch in Brentwood

On August 13, 2019, the Brentwood Fire Department was activated for a structure fire at the rear of a North Gardiner Drive home.

Truck Captain Chris Boyle was first on scene and transmitted a working fire in a two-story utility building. The responding units were advised that this would be a long stretch to access the build-

ing. Chief Andrew Renison assumed command. Brentwood Legion Ambulance was also on scene and handled rehab. One firefighter was transported to Southside Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Copiague Vacant House Goes

The Copiague Fire Department responded to a house fire on West Granada Avenue just after midnight on August 22, 2019. Second Assistant Chief Miller arrived to heavy smoke coming from a single-story vacant house. Engine 1-3-9 and Ladder 1-3-4 put two lines

into operation to extinguish fire that was now showing from the rear of the house, while 1-3-4 searched and vented. It took about 30 minutes to bring the fire under control. Lindenhurst also responded to the scene.

Garage Fire in Carle Place The Carle Place Fire Department transmitted a working fire for a private dwelling on Curtis Avenue on August 26, 2019. The bulk of the fire was confined to an attached garage but smoke filled the entire two-story home. Mutual aid companies assisted at the scene.

Quick Stop in Uniondale The Uniondale Fire Department operated at a house fire on Clark Place on August 27, 2019. Units arrived to smoke pushing from a second-floor window, but the fire was quickly extinguished with one handline.

Jericho MVA

August 4, 2019, at 2310, the Jericho Fire Department was alerted for an MVA with fire in the vicinity of Old Jericho Turnpike and Route 106. Units found a single-car MVA with no fire after the driver lost control and crossed over Route 106, crashing into a fence in a wooded area. Crews secured the car and the driver was transported to a hospital.

North Bellmore House Fire

Late on July 9, 2019, the North Bellmore Fire Department was called to a house fire on Forest Avenue. Engine 656 was first on the scene and found smoke showing and fire on the first and second floors. Crews stretched three lines with two going into operation to bring the fire under control within an hour. All searches of the house were negative and there were no reported injuries. Mutual aid was provided by East Meadow, Bellmore and Wantagh. Chief of Department Narell was in charge of the scene.

FFs Injured at Lindenhurst VFW Blaze On September 4, 2019, the Lindenhurst Fire Department was activated for a structure fire at the VFW hall on North Delaware Avenue. The crew of first-due Ladder 1-6-4 was met with heavy smoke and visible flames showing.

Mutual aid was brought in from North Lindenhurst, Babylon, West Babylon, North Amityville, Copiague and East Farmingdale. Crews made an aggressive attack on the stubborn fire, which took about an hour to bring under control. Multiple firefighters sustained minor injuries fighting the blaze.

Command requested a fire marshal and arson squad to the scene.

Copiague Car Fire

The Copiague Fire Department was called to a car fire on Sunrise Highway at Albany Avenue on the night of August 24, 2019. Engines 1-3-7, 1-3-9, Heavy Rescue 1-3-3, Utility Trucks 1-3-6 and 1-3-8 responded. Units arrived to find a fully involved car with the driver out of the vehicle uninjured.

Centereach Home Gutted

On August 25, 2019, the Centereach Fire Department was activated for a residential fire on Catalina Court. Commanding units were met with a fully engulfed structure and requested mutual aid from Selden, Stony Brook, and Farmingville. Despite heavy fire condi-

tions, crews were able to get a fast knockdown of the fire, but the home was badly gutted. One occupant was transported to a nearby hospital with minor injuries. Command requested a fire marshal to the scene for investigation.

1 Rescued at Freeport Fire On the afternoon of August 5, 2019, the Freeport Fire Department was alerted for an apartment fire on South Bergen Place.

Firefighters located a fire in the living room. The can firefighter held the fire in check while a primary search was done, during which, an unconscious victim was found. She was removed and CPR was performed. Bellmore-Merrick EMS transported the victim to the hospital in critical condition. The fire was quickly extinguished and no other injuries were reported. All fire operations were under the command of Chief of Department Thomas ‘TJ’ Johnson. The cause of the fire was under investigation by the Nassau County Fire Marshall’s Office.

Fatality, Injuries in North Patchogue Fire On June 14, 2019, the North Patchogue Fire Department was activated for a residential structure fire on Ohls Street.

Suffolk County Police advised of an active fire and possible occupants within.

Commanding units requested mutual aid from Medford, Patchogue, Hagerman and Blue Point. One occupant was located deceased in the basement of the home.

Several other occupants of the home were transported to area hospitals for their injuries. Command requested a fire marshal and arson squad to the scene for investigation.

Lightning Sparks Melville Shed Blaze

Good Stop for Cold Spring Harbor

The Melville Fire Department responded to a fire in a backyard on Suydam Drive on August 22, 2019. Chief of Department Chris Nolan arrived to an involved shed that had been struck by lightning, according to reports from neighbors. Melville firefighters responded quickly and extinguished the blaze before any other property was damaged. Chief Nolan was assisted by Assistant Chief David Kaplan, and Jason Bernfeld.

The Cold Spring Harbor Fire Department responded to a house fire on Banbury Lane in the Village of Lloyd Harbor on September 13, 2019. Crews arrived to find an attic fire in the large home.

Mutual aid came from Huntington and Halesite. Atlantic Steamer from Oyster Bay provided standby. “It was a tough fire to fight but an aggressive interior attack by the first-due crew minimized damage,� said Chief Justin Armbruster who was in command with the support of Assistant Chiefs Steve Fitts and Brendan Fitts. The cause of the fire appeared accidental but was under investigation by the Suffolk Police Arson Squad.

Garage Fire Extends in West Hempstead

The Franklin Square and Munson Fire Department received multiple calls for a garage fire on Munson Avenue in West Hempstead on the evening of September 6, 2019. Arriving units found a raging fire

Mostly Exterior Work at Lawrence Blaze

The Lawrence-Cedarhurst Fire Department, along with multiple mutual aid units, battled a fire in a wood-framed private dwelling on Breezeway Avenue on September 6, 2019. The fire was well advanced on arrival and large caliber streams were immediately put into place. Multiple handlines were stretched but the bulk of the extinguishment was achieved with outside streams due to the instability of the structure.

Electrical Fire in Levittown On August 16, 2019, the Wantagh Fire Department received a call for a house fire with smoke coming from a closet on Club Lane in Levittown. First Assistant Chief Ken Kelly was first to arrive and reported a heavy smoke condition in the home and requested all Wantagh stations. Chief of Department Joe Gross arrived to find the smoke condition worsening and apparently in the walls and potentially extending to the second floor and requested mutual aid.

Engine 2, with Captain Marc Besthoff in command, secured a water supply and stretched a line to the first floor. Engine 7, led by Lieutenant Joe Seier, stretched an additional hose to the front door and stood by to back up Engine 2.

Ladder 2, led by Lieutenant Nick Finocchio and Ladder 1 with ex-Chief/Lieutenant Bruce Sparke in command, performed truck company operations. A FAST responded from Levittown and Bethpage stood by. The main body of fire was knocked down in about 20 minutes while units remained on the scene for approximately 90 minutes. The Nassau County Fire Marshal responded and determined the cause of the fire to be electrical. There were no injuries reported.

Hoarding Condition in Massapequa

On September 1, 2019, the North Massapequa Fire Department was called to a house fire on Rutherford Drive. First to arrive was Third Assistant Chief Licata who found smoke showing from a two-story house. Second Assistant Chief Frascella arrived and took command until First Assistant Chief Maroldo arrived. Engine 665 stretched a line to the front door. As members made their way into the house they encountered a severe hoarding condition from floor to ceiling in all rooms on all floors of the house, hampering their attempts to find the seat of the fire. The fire was eventually located in the basement and second line was stretched by the crew of Bethpage Engine 9055 and brought to the rear of the house to hit the fire from a base-

ment window. Once crews made their way to the basement, the fire was knocked down and placed under control. The crews from Ladder 661 and Wantagh Ladder 6912 searched what they could of the house and those searches were negative. Additional mutual aid was proved to the scene by the Massapequa and Farmingdale Fire Departments; units from Levittown, North Bellmore and South Farmingdale stood by for North Massapequa. There were no injuries and the cause of the fire is under investigation. The Town of Hempstead was also requested to the scene due to the conditions in the house.

Syosset Car into Building On August 7, 2019, the Syosset Fire Department was alerted for a report of a car into a building on Jackson Avenue in Syosset. Arriving units found the driver of a Tesla had lost control and crashed into the store front. The store front was damaged, and the driver and people inside the store were shaken up but uninjured. The Town of Oyster Bay Building the Department was called to inspect the building that had to close due to the accident.

East Farmingdale MVA On August 31, 2019, the East Farmingdale Fire Company was activated for an MVA on New Highway near Route 109. Crews were met with a two-car MVA with negative entrapment. The crew of Rescue 1-5-4 secured the involved vehicles. One driver was transported to a local hospital for injuries via an East Farmingdale Ambulance.

Fire Extends Rapidly in Hewlett

The Hewlett Fire Department transmitted a working house fire on September 5, 2019. The fire appeared to have started in the rear of the large home and quickly spread up the exterior and into the house.

Bethpage Boat Fire Stopped from Extending

On August 11, 2019, at 0108, the Bethpage Fire Department was alerted for a boat fire alongside a house on Central Avenue.

Arriving units found a fully involved boat in the rear yard with exposure problems and a primary wire down. Crews quickly got water on the fire and it did not extend to the home, but did extend

to a camper behind it. Crews kept two 35-pound propane tanks cool until they could be removed from the front of the camper. No injuries were reported and the cause was under investigation.

CYA? The Power of the Text David Dodson is a genius and his book Incident Safety Officer (3rd Edition) is the pathway to the National Certification exam. On page 150 he covers Cover Your Butt (CYA). Although he states you don’t want to be the Safety Officer that continues to use SOPs, OSHA, etc., you have to concern yourself with the safety of all first responders and take personal responsibility for everyone’s safety.

At an incident scene, we as Safety Officers (SOs) observe, and hear numerous so called, “minor” anti-safety actions, activities and/or orders. You may see someone not wearing gloves, or doing something against the agency’s SOP, etc., not an activity that is going to cause an imminent life or death situation where you can enact the National Fire Protection Association 1500, 1561 and OSHA, and stop, alter or suspend the operation, but where something probably should be said, made note of or handled by you, the SO, in an informal matter.

Well CYA. Why? Because you are the one they are expecting to say something. You are the one responsible under the incident commander, for safety. If there is a serious injury or, worse, an LODD, you will most likely be interviewed by someone from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and/or from the Public Employees Safety and Health organization. Even though what you observed was just a minor infraction of a safety rule or standard, if it comes up in the interview, you will be asked, “What did you do about it?”

You are not going to say, “It didn’t lead to an imminent life-threatening situation so I did nothing.” So how do you CYA? Well, in most cases you can bring the infraction to the first responder’s immediate officer. If that does not exist then there is always the Incident Commander. So, let’s see. You are at an annoying carbon monoxide alarm and there are several firefighters that have not checked in with their accountability tag, information, etc. Imminent threat to their life?

Probably not. Should you say something? Absolutely. Where, how, why and when do you say something?

Let’s take “why.” Because it is a Standard Operating Procedure, Chief’s order, etc., and must be followed. Next is “when?”

Immediately. You observed it, something must be said. Next is “where?” Well, you could wait until you secure from the scene, or you could say something right at the scene.

A text message along the lines of, “Lieutenant, Jimmy Jones once again has not submitted his accountability tag.” Now hold on, I don’t mean sit there on scene and text throughout the entire incident, but when it becomes necessary, the power of the text is a great option to use.

Lynbrook House Fire

Late on September 10, 2019, the Lynbrook Fire Department was called to a house fire on Durland Road off Dunne Place. Crews were met with heavy fire showing from the top floor of a 2-1/2 story private dwelling. Despite the significant volume of fire, firefighters quickly made the attic and got a hold of the blaze.

Among the departments called for mutual aid was Hewlett, Rockville Centre, East Rockaway and Malverne. The cause of the fire was under investigation and all fire units were under the command of Lynbrook Chief of Department Nick Pearsall.

1 Hurt in Car-into-Building MVA The Bay Shore Fire Department was called to an accident at the Burger King on August 11, 2019, for a reported car into the building. Engine 3-1-5, Ladder 3-1-7 and Heavy Rescue 3-1-8 responded under command of Second Assistant Chief Eklund. The driver crashed into the front of the building, injuring one person inside with debris. Islip responded with one ambulance and took the person to Southside Hospital with minor injuries, the driver was uninjured.

Fire in Ice Cream Truck On July 22, 2019, the South Farmingdale Fire Department was dispatched to a vehicle fire on McKinley Avenue near Merritts Road. The crew of first-due Engine 972 knocked down a small fire in the rear compartment of a Mister Softee ice cream truck. No injuries were reported.

All Out in Medford Bedroom Fire On August 13, 2019, the Medford Fire Department was activated for a residential structure fire on Lad Avenue.

Chief Frank Rivera was met with smoke showing and transmitted a working fire. Mutual aid was requested from Medford Ambulance, Farmingville, Yaphank, and North Patchogue. The fire was quickly knocked down by first-due crews, and confined to only one bedroom of the home. No injuries were reported.

Crawl Space Fire in Wantagh

Just before 2100 on August 18, 2019, the Wantagh Fire Department was alerted for smoke in the attic at a Sycamore Avenue home. Engine 695 stretched an initial handline, while the crew from Engine 693 stretched a second line.

The crews from Ladder 6911 and 6912 laddered, vented and searched and found the seat of the fire under the house in a crawl space. Once located, the fire was extinguished and quickly brought under control. The cause was found to be an electrical issue in the crawlspace. Seaford responded as the FAST and Massapequa, Bellmore and North Bellmore stood by. Chief of Department Gross was in charge.

Wantagh House Fire Stopped

The Wantagh Fire Department was called to a house fire on Sunrise Lane on August 15, 2019. Chief of Department Gross arrived to fire showing from the first floor of a two-story house. Engine 692 and Ladder 6912 arrived and the engine crew stretched three lines with two going into operation to knock down the fire before it extended

to the second floor and had it under control within an hour. The occupants home at the time escaped uninjured. Levittown responded as the FAST and was replaced by the Bethpage after being put to work. North Massapequa and Bethpage stood by.

5 Injured in Amityville MVA

The Amityville Fire and Police Departments responded to an accident with reported car fire at County Line Road and eastbound Sunrise Highway on August 14, 2019. An SUV collided with a small car causing the SUV to burst into flames. Engines 1-1-3 and 1-1-4, and Ambulances 1-1-11 and 1-1-12 responded, along with mutual

aid ambulances from Massapequa, Copiague and North Amityville.

The fire was extinguished in about 10 minutes. There were five people injured and all were transported with non-life-threatening injuries. Second Assistant Chief Budde was in charge.

East Farmingdale Commercial Fire On August 6, 2019, the East Farmingdale Fire Company was activated for a commercial structure fire at the Island Transportation Corporation building on Edison Avenue. Units were met with heavy smoke showing and mutual aid was requested from North Lindenhurst and Wyandanch.

Vacant House Fire in Jericho On August 6, 2019, at 0600, the Jericho Fire Department was alerted for a report of smoke coming from a Fern Drive West home. Arriving units found smoke showing and a fire in the living room of the two-story home, which was vacant and under renovation. Engine 942 stretched one line to the front door.

While crews were getting water on the fire, additional crews from Syosset did searches. The cause was under investigation.

House Fire in Long Beach Late on the afternoon of September 12, 2019, the Long Beach Fire Department was called to a house fire on West Hudson Street off Magnolia Boulevard. Long Beach Engine 2343 arrived to fire in the attic of a private dwelling. Mutual aid was called, and a second alarm was transmitted. Firefighters put as many as four handlines into operation to fight the fire, which burned through most of the attic area. Among the departments called for mutual aid was Rockville Centre, Lawrence-Cedarhurst, Oceanside, Point Lookout-Lido, Island Park, Inwood, and Atlantic Beach Rescue. Two firefighters were injured, neither seriously. All fire department units were under the command of Long Beach Chief of Department Digiacomo.

Friday the 13th Car Fire

The Dix Hills Fire Department responded to an involved SUV fire on New Jersey Street near Deer Park Avenue on September 13, 2019. Driver Hurt in Plainview MVA with Fire

On August 14, 2019, the Plainview Fire Department was alerted for an MVA with fire at the intersection of Old Country Road and Pasadena Drive. Arriving crews found a sedan fully involved after colliding with a box truck. Bystanders had pulled the driver from her burning car and she was transported to the hospital.

Wantagh House Fire On the night of August 16, 2019, the Wantagh Fire Department was called to a house fire on Club Lane off Gardiners Avenue. Firefighters were met with a confirmed smoke condition and then confirmed fire on the first floor of a two-story Levitt-style house. Levittown responded to the scene with Ladder 626. Two handlines were stretched with one put into operation off Wantagh Engine 692. The fire was quickly knocked down and the cause was under investigation.

South Farmingdale Vehicle Fire On the night of August 22, 2019, the South Farmingdale Fire Department responded to numerous alarms during violent thunderstorms and high winds including a vehicle fire on Oakwood Avenue that was caused when a power line fell onto a minivan.

Engines 972 and Heavy Rescue 979 responded with Chief of Department Mackie. The crews put one line into operation and extinguished what fire they could while waiting for PSEG to ensure the power was off. Units were on scene over an hour before being able to completely extinguish the fire.

Car Fire on Sunrise Lynbrook firefighters, under the command of Chief Nick Pearsall, responded to a car fire on Sunrise Highway and Rocklyn Avenue on August 31, 2019, at 2315.

Engine Company 1 was first on the scene and stretched a booster line and extinguished the burning vehicle. Traffic was closed eastbound on Sunrise Highway for about 45 minutes. The driver of the vehicle was not injured.

2nd Floor Blaze in Lake Success

On September 8, 2019, Manhasset-Lakeville Fire Department Companies 3 and 4 were dispatched to Meadow Woods Road, in the Village of Lake Success, for a reported odor of smoke in a house. All four M-LFD deputy chiefs responded and were updated that the Lake Success Police were on scene reporting a working fire on the second floor of the residence. With this information, all five M-LFD

fire companies and the Ambulance Unit were added to the alarm.

The crews of Engines 8735 and 8758 stretched lines, and were joined by the crew of 8712, as ladder crews conducted vent, enter and search operations. New Hyde Park responded with a FAST, which was put to work to assist with firefighting operations. Port Washington also responded.

EMS ACROSS THE ISLAND

No Injuries in East Farmingdale Wall Collapse On August 22, 2019, during heavy rain and violent thunderstorms, the East Farmingdale Fire Company was activated for a reported building collapse onto multiple vehicles at a commercial structure on Executive Boulevard. Commanding units were met with a partial collapse of a commercial two-story building, with heavy debris onto about 10 vehicles in the parking lot. Suffolk County Police K-9 units, along with East Farmingdale Fire Company crews using thermal imaging cameras searched the entire property for any victims. Luckily no injuries were reported. Command requested a fire marshal and building inspector to the scene.

Well, Something Failed, That’s For Sure!

The West Babylon Fire Department responded to an MVA with reported car into a house on Gordon Avenue just before noon on July 12, 2019. Chief of Department Schumann arrived and confirmed substantial damage to the 1-2 corner. Engine 1-9-2, Heavy Rescue 1-9-15, Ambulance 1-9-7 and Fire Police 1-9-5 responded.

The driver of an SUV backed into the garage door of a friend’s house damaging it, the driver then put the vehicle in drive and lost control and crashed into a bedroom of a house across the street.

The driver was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital for an evaluation. There was nobody home in the house that was severely damaged. The crews from 1-9-2, 1-9-15 and East Farmingdale Technical Rescue Truck 1-5-28 shored up the affected part of the house after the vehicle was removed. It was reported that the brakes on the vehicle had failed.

Motorcycle Down in Deer Park On August 25, 2019, the Deer Park Fire Department responded to a motorcycle accident at the corner of Deer Park and Long Island Avenues. A motorcycle traveling south on Deer Park Avenue collided with a car, throwing the driver of the motorcycle. The motorcycle continued another 300 feet on Deer Park Avenue from the scene. The driver of the motorcycle was transported with non-life-threatening injuries to Good Samaritan Hospital and the people in the car were unhurt.

Tree onto Car in West Babylon

West Hempstead MVA

The West Babylon Fire Department responded to York Place off of Sunrise Highway for a reported tree that fell on a car during high winds and violent thunder storms that went through the area on the night of August 22, 2019. Chief of Department Schumann, Third Assistant Chief Kamalic, Heavy Rescue 1-9-15, Brush Truck 1-9-24, an ambulance and First Responder 19-80 responded. The passenger in a sedan was injured as the car traveled on York Place when the tree fell onto the vehicle. The crews were able to remove the injured person to Good Smaritan Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The crews used chainsaws to cut the tree off of the car and clear it from the road.

First-due crews stabilized the vehicle then worked with Suffolk County Police ESU in extricating the driver by removing the roof of the SUV. On August 15, 2019, the Bohemia Fire Department was activated for an MVA with possible entrapment on Sycamore Avenue.

Command units were met with a MVA involving two vehicles. in which a car rear-ended a flatbed truck. Command advised incoming units of negative entrapment. The crew of Bohemia’s first-due engine secured the involved vehicles. One driver was transported to Long Island Community Hospital for injuries via a Sayville Community Ambulance.

August 21, 2019, the North Patchogue Fire Department was activated for an MVA with involving a tractor trailer on the eastbound Sunrise Highway near exit 54. Command units were met with an MVA involving four vehicles. The tractor trailer rear-ended one car sending it into two other vehicles. Command advised incoming units of negative entrapment. The crews of Ladder 2, and Squad 3 secured all involved vehicles. Four patients were transported to nearby hospitals for their injuries via North Patchogue Ambulances.

1 Hurt in Box Truck, Minivan MVA A two-vehicle accident in Westbury left one occupant of a box truck pinned in his vehicle until Westbury firefighters could free him on September 3, 2019.

The crash, between a box truck and a minivan, happened at the intersection of Union and Linden Avenues around 0900. After the impact, the truck smashed into and severed a nearby utility pole which landed atop the truck. The injured was transported to an area hospital by county police ambulance.

DWI at North Babylon Car into House The North Babylon Fire Company was called to an MVA at Centerwood Street and Westchester Avenue just after 0100 on August 31, 2019. The driver of a car went up a lawn and through a fence before crashing into the side of a Centerwood Street home. Engine 1-8-4, Heavy Rescue 1-8-5 and Ambulance 1-8-17 responded along with Assistant Chiefs Cullen and Harrington. There were no injuries to anyone in the house, but the driver was taken into custody at the scene by police and taken to Good Samaritan Hospital with minor injuries.

At Least it Wasn’t an Elevator The Garden City Fire Department received a call for a car into a building on Seventh Street on August 29, 2019. A vehicle jumped the curb and struck a nearby stairway leading to a professional building. The car was stuck atop the handrail so firefighters used hydraulic tools to remove the railings. There were no injuries.

1 Hurt in Car vs. Building MVA in Syosset On August 22, 2019, the Syosset Fire Department received multiple phone calls for a report of a car into a building in the Shop Rite Shopping Center on Woodbury Road. Arriving units found a car into the rear of the Amazing Savings Store.

The driver was not injured after losing control in the Shop Rite parking lot and crashing through the loading dock door and into the M J Beanz toy store. One person inside the store was seriously injured and the passenger was removed by Syosset firefighters. The store sustained heavy damage and the Town of Oyster Bay Building Department was called to inspect the building.

MVA on LIE Entrance Ramp

On August 9, 2019, the Syosset Fire Department responded to a report of an MVA with multiple people injured at the intersection of Angel Way and Woodbury Road in Woodbury. Arriving units found a two-car accident with a large fluid spill and two people injured. Syosset and NCPD EMS crews took care of the injured drivers. Angel Way, the Long Island Expressway entrance ramp, was closed until the cars could be removed. Both drivers were transported to the hospital.

Melville Responds to Northern State Crash

The Melville Fire Department responded to a single-car MVA on the Northern State Parkway, westbound at exit 39 on August 24, 2019 at about 0220. Two occupants suffered injuries, one seriously.

Both patients were transported to the Nassau University Medical Center. Units were under the direction of Assistant Chiefs David Kaplan and Jason Bernfeld. The accident occurred on the Nassau County border and the Plainview Fire Department assisted with an engine.

Oyster Bay Town The Town of Oyster Bay held its annual 9/11 Memorial Service with new names being added to the Memorial Wall located at Tobay Beach. Among the names being added were James Kennelly and Sheldon Moskowitz of the Massapequa Fire Department and James Mansberger of the Jericho Fire Department.

Massapequa, Jericho and Bethpage Fire Departments flew US flags at the entrance to the beach with many of their members in attendance for the ceremony.

Franklin SquareMunson On the evening of September 8, 2019, the Franklin Square and Munson Fire Department hosted their annual 9/11 ceremony. The event was held at the town’s 9/11 memorial on Naple Avenue opposite Rath Park. During the ceremony the names of those lost from Franklin Square (along with others) were read. Each time a name was read a rose was placed on the piece of steel recovered from the World Trade Center that helps to make up the town's memorial.

SCVF Burn Center Recognition Day

On May 19, 2019, the Suffolk County Volunteer Firefighters Burn Center held their annual Burn Center Recognition Day. Doctor Steve Sandoval, M.D, who is the medical director for the Burn Center, welcomed everyone to this year’s event.

Senator Ken LaValle swore in the new officers for the burn center. Congratulations to acting President Dawn Meyer as she continues to lead the organization in 2019. Good luck to 2nd Vice-President Ken Rubinetti, Secretary Mary-Catherine Dolan, and Treasurer Robert Sutton as they work together in 2019.

Congratulations to Burn Nurse of the Year: Debbie Leiva; Ancilliary Staff of the Year: Nadjwah Golver; and Care Provider of the Year: Norman Cruz, NP, for their dedicated and hard work at the Burn Center. Coram Celebrates 90 Years On June 1, 2019, the Coram Fire District proudly held their department’s 90th Annual Installation and Awards Dinner.

Remembered for his 62 years of service to the Coram Fire Department was Charles Stadier.

He was a great man and is missed by the department.

Good luck to Chief of Department Stephen Turcotte, 1st Assistant Chief William Bozeman, and to 2nd Assistant Chief Robert Walther as they lead the department in 2019. Honored with the Coram Chief of Life Award was Commissioner Thomas Lyon.

Commissioner James R. Brown was recognized for his dedication and commitment to the Coram Fire Department, the Coram District and to the community of Coram for the past five years.

Volleyball Tournament Raises Funds On July 25, 2019, firefighters from all over Suffolk County, as well as New York City, took to the courts at a special volleyball tournament at the Holiday Inn Express in Stony Brook. The second annual tournament raised funds for the Lt. Joseph P. DiBernardo Memorial Foundation, which has been working hard to help purchase Bailout Systems for departments throughout the country.

This year’s teams came from Farmingville, Centereach, Mount Sinai, Coram, Terryville, Setauket, Selden and FDNY Ladder 120, along with a team from Gold Coast Bank. At the end of the matches, the Farmingville firefighters were the champions and donated their $1,000 winnings back to the foundation. Keep in mind that the Lt. Joseph P.DiBernardo Seminar will be on November 2 and 3, 2019. The foundation hopes to see you there.

Franklin SquareMunson Explorers at Fire Camp Five of the Franklin Square and Munson Explorer Post 710 of the Franklin Square and Munson Fire Department attended Fire Camp at the end of July and received fire training. The six-day program was held at the Nassau County Fire Service Academy in Bethpage. In addition to Explorers and Juniors from other Nassau County fire departments, eight exchange junior firefighters from Germany also attended. At their graduation ceremony, they received Completion Certificates for the camp and also earned the German Firefighter Knowledge Award — Level 2.

Islip Terrace Installation and Awards

The Islip Terrace Fire Department held their 100th Annual Installation of Officers at Lombardi’s on the Bay in Patchogue on June 8, 2019. After the invocation by Department Chaplain Joseph Carpinelli, the chiefs and commissioners were introduced. Leading the department will be Chief of Department Thomas Quagliara, First Assistant Chief Frank Russo and Second Assistant Chief Walter Redwood. Led by Chairman Anthony Maieli, the Board of Fire Commissioners includes Frank Chimirri, Keith Miller, Bart Gugel and Peter Peluso.

Ex-Chief Joseph Rosadio was presented with an award in recognition of his dedicated service as Chief of Department. Awards of meritorious service for 2017-2018 were presented to Lieutenant Anton Nadvornik, Jr., as Officer of the Year while ex-Chief Anton Nadvornik, Sr., received the High Points award for 2018. In addition, members were honored for their milestone years of service including Firefighter Salvatore Tidona (50 years) as well as ex-Chief James Fetherston, Firefighter Phil Dimes and Firefighter Joseph Falci, Jr. (40 years).

Celebrating 140 Years of Service Lynbrook’s Rescue Hook, Ladder and Bucket Company No 1 of the Lynbrook Fire Department celebrated its 140th Anniversary as a fire company at their firehouse on Earle Avenue. The company was formed by a group of 15 concerned residents on November 25, 1879, when the Village of Lynbrook was called Pearsall’s. Nassau County EMS Water Rescue Exercise

On August 19, 2019, for the tenth consecutive year, Atlantic Beach Rescue hosted the Nassau County EMS Water Rescue Exercise. Ten Nassau County fire department and EMS agencies participated in the exercise conducting in and out of water rescue and EMS skills.

Wantagh Divers, Marine and HazMat Train Together

On August 11, 2019, members of the Wantagh Fire Department’s Marine Unit, Dive Team and Hazardous Materials Team met at Coast Guard Station Jones Beach to train together and practice their skills. Skills included flowing water, deploying divers from Marine One, divers practicing surface dives around the Marina near the Coast Guard Station and finally the deployment and use of Decontamination Equipment and Hazardous Materials suits by the Hazardous Materials Team. A scenario was followed whereby divers were deployed into water which was polluted with contaminants, requiring the divers and their equipment to be decontaminated post dive. EMS personnel were on hand to evaluate and monitor the dive team and HazMat Team personnel and provide treatment.

Bohemia’s Andersen Leaves for U.S. Army

Award Ceremony in Farmingville

On July 18, 2019, Brookhaven Firefighter Peter DiPinto was awarded the prestigious Carnegie Medal for his act of bravery in October 2017 by Mr. Eric Zahren, President and Secretary of the Carnegie Hero Fund Commission at a ceremony at Brookhaven Town Hall.

Levittown’s Schwartz Serves 50 Years Congratulations to ex-Captain Al Schwartz of the Levittown Fire Department for recently reaching 50 years of service to the department and its community.

Al was sworn into the Levittown Fire Department on July 21, 1968, and was assigned to Engine Company 3. He served his company as a Lieutenant from 1974-1975 and was installed as company Captain in 1976 and 1977. Al continued through the Levittown ranks and served as 3rd Deputy Chief from 1982-1983 and 2nd Deputy Chief from 1984. He continues to serve as an active member of Engine Company 3.

During his 50 years of service, Al was awarded the Levittown Department Medal of Valor and the Charles F. Bruen 1980 Fireman of the Year Award for the successful rescue of a male occupant at the scene of a house fire. Congratulations to ex-Captain Al Schwartz on his 50-years of service to his department.

AB Rescue Rookie Training

On June 8, 2019, members of Atlantic Beach Rescue conducted surf rescue training and their annual rookie training class on the oceanfront. The drill tested ocean swimming rescue skills, self rescue, surf boat operator skills, surfboard operations and victim backboarding. The water team was joined by AB Rescue’s Drone Unit which conducted wide-area victim search patterns. At the end of the drill, members of the public who were observing the drill joined AB Rescue for a photo op and discussion of the team’s operations and equipment.

Firefighters Join Vietnam Wall Arrival to Eisenhower Park The Vietnam Memorial Traveling Wall, “The Wall That Heals,” arrived at Eisenhower Park in August and went underneath an American flag arch raised by ladder trucks from the Westbury and East Meadow Fire Departments. The tractor-trailer carrying the wall was escorted to Eisenhower Park by motorcycles from the Nassau County Police Department and the American Legion Riders. The Wall is a half-scale replica of the Washington, DC, Vietnam Memorial Wall and was on display in Field 2 until September 1.

Cooking with Friends

By Ray Cooney Making my way into Red Hook, Brooklyn, is always fun. Fighting the traffic is the highlight of the journey. At the end of this journey, awaited a great reward — Friends of Firefighters. FoF is a firefighter charity that was created after the attacks on 9/11.Its quarters are actually located inside an old firehouse — the original Engine 202, Ladder 101. “It is a sanctuary for New York City firefighters,” said Nancy Carbone (one of the charity’s founders). When I arrived, I was greeted by Tony Catapano and Pete Calascinoe, both retired from Engine 202.

“What are we cooking today?” I asked my two Italian friends. They said that we were making chicken oregenata and pasta Insalata. “Pasta

Insalata? What’s that?’ I asked. It is a delicious pasta salad served room temperature with uncooked sauce. They were surprised that I never heard of it, knowing my history of being married to an Italian woman. As we were preparing the food, we spoke of the old days in the fire department. Tony, being a 42-year veteran of the FDNY, made me feel like I was in the kitchen again cooking with the senior men. It was comical cooking with these guys. They were stepping on each other’s words, questioning each other on what to put in the recipe and then agreeing on what to and what not to put in the recipe. It was like watching an old, married, Italian couple!

One thing they were both passionate about was FoF. They both have been involved from almost the conception. FoF provides counseling, support and health services, such as yoga, acupuncture, etc., to the FDNY. This is a dynamite case and is why I am getting involved. This is why the next season of Firehouse Kitchen will be aiding in the raising of funds for FoF. Feel free to visit FoF at friendsoffirefighters.org.

PASTA INSALATA Large can of whole tomatoes Garlic cloves Olive oil Basil Parsley Romano cheese 1 pound of penne pasta Boil water for pasta. When water boils, place uncooked pasta in pot and cook, stirring occasionally. While that is cooking, pour can of tomatoes into large mixing bowl and squish with hands. Press out garlic cloves and add to taste. Mix 1/3 cup of olive oil, chopped basil and parley to the sauce and garlic mix. Mix together and add Romano cheese to taste. Set aside tomato sauce and let sit for approximately 20 minutes. Strain pasta when cooked. Pour tomato dressing over pasta and enjoy.

Nassau Emerald Society News The Nassau County Firefighters Emerald Society was proud to act as the honor guard at the Long Island Ducks game in August celebrating Irish Heritage Night.

Represented in the color guard were members from East Williston Fire Department, Mineola Volunteer Ambulance, and firefighters from South Hempstead, Island Park, and Floral Park Center. Bohemia 126th Installations and Awards

The Bohemia Fire Department celebrated their 126th annual installation of Chiefs and Officers. Chief Brian O’Neill was installed as Chief of Department; Thomas Iwanejko, First Assistant Chief; and Scott Thompson, Second Assistant Chief. Members of the Islip communities and neighboring departments joined the celebration. Also honored for 50 years of service, member Donald Mistler, who received Honorary Chief designation.

Firefighters Ricky Richter and William Fagan were recognized for their years of service as well.

NOMINATION PERIOD OPEN FOR ANNUAL EVT AWARD Chief officers are encouraged to submit an emergency vehicle technician for Firehouse’s annual EVT award for service that goes above and beyond.

The job of an EVT is technical, complicated and dangerous as they work to keep vehicles on the road to respond to the next emergency. Walk through the apparatus maintenance shop today and you’ll find an assortment of digital equipment, electronic diagnostics gear and computers alongside traditional mechanical tools that EVTs use on emergency vehicles.

In 1988, the Emergency Vehicle Technician Certification program was introduced to elevate the standards of emergency vehicle maintenance and the personnel performing the work. To nationally recognize the EVTs’ dedication, the Emergency Vehicle Technician of the Year Award was created in 2003 to raise awareness of the vital role these individuals play in fire and emergency services.

“Over the past 15 years, we have heard many stories of EVTs studying and earning EVT and Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications on their personal time,” EVT of the Year Coordinator Janet Wilmoth said. “Continued training and education through local EVT associations, national conferences and manufacturers’ programs is critical to EVTs and the evolving technology in fire and emergency apparatus today.”

The selection criteria are focused on leadership, professional development, integrity and a commitment to the safe operation of emergency vehicles for responders and the community. The nomination letter should emphasize a nominee’s implementation of safe procedures, advanced education in the field and service above and beyond.

Anyone can nominate an EVT that meets the following criteria: • Be a member in good standing of a state or local EVT association as of Jan. 1, 2019.

• Have at least five (5) years full-time employment in the maintenance of emergency vehicles.

• Be working toward or passed any of the Emergency Vehicle Technician Certification

Commission tests.

• Be working toward or passed any of the Automotive Service Excellence tests.

• Foster professionalism through participation in a local, state or provincial mainte-

nance/emergency vehicle technician association.

• Adhere to the education of safety practices and procedures in his/her profession.

early 1990s. As more electronic components appear on fire apparatus and demand new skills, coupled with the legal liability of unsafe apparatus and unknown carcinogens lurking inside apparatus and ambulances, emergency vehicle technicians do their job so you can do yours. Show your appreciation for their commitment and nominate your EVT. The 2019 EVT of the Year Award is sponsored by Spartan Motors and will be presented at the FDSOA’s Fire Apparatus, Safety and Maintenance Conference, Jan. 13-15 in Scottsdale, AZ. A nominee previously submitted can be entered again.

The nominee will be advised that they have been nominated for an award and will be asked to provide the following information: name; department; phone number; email address and permit of the use of their photo and name for promotion purposes.

A select panel of judges will review all nominations and jointly select the winners.

The winner will be notified by Dec. 16. All nominees will be notified by e-mail of the results.

CSEA’s Nick LaMorte Thanks You

The CSEA Union election process is long and somewhat complicated, but LaMorte, along with his slate of officers, hopes to prevail. He will be representing all CSEA state, local government and retiree members throughout

New York State, some 265,000 members. Along with Sue Sheehan, Executive Vice President; Ira Bethea, Treasurer; and Maria Navarro, Secretary; they will move the union forward and strengthen its solidarity, political power, defend the benefits in place and improve the quality of life for all members, while at the same time providing the services members provide for the citizens of New York State.

Smithtown’s Father Dan Bitsko

On September 9, 2019, approximately 50 members of the Smithtown Fire Department and Smithtown Chief’s Council traveled to Lansford, Pennsylvania, to say farewell to one of the most revered members in its history. Father Daniel Bitsko, who had been the Chaplain of the Smithtown Fire Department for 50 years, passed away on September 4 at the age of 82.

Father Dan joined the department in April 1969 and was assigned to the Hook and Ladder Company. A four-time recipient of his company’s Firefighter of the Year Award and a 2005 recipient of the Department Firefighter of the Year award, Father Dan served the department in many capacities and has received more honors than can be listed. He went on to become the Chaplain for various fire service organizations including the Smithtown Chiefs Council, Suffolk County Chiefs Council and the Suffolk County Volunteer Fireman’s Association. In 2002 he became the Chief Chaplain of the NYS Association of Fire Chaplains, a position he held until 2004.

Throughout his career, Father Dan had an influence on countless firefighters and their families, which was made evident by those who packed St. John the Baptist Byzantine Catholic Church for his funeral. Firefighters assembled outside, posted the colors out front and stood honor guard at the entrance while many loved ones came to say their farewell. Following the funeral liturgy, members stood in formation behind Father Dan’s fire gear and saluted as he was led out of the church by his fellow priests, and carried by fellow firefighters. A testament to the fraternal brotherhood he had with each. Following a short ride to the Summit Hill Cemetery, a peaceful graveside service was held where a final salute was offered by each member in attendance, and his Chaplain’s helmet was presented to Father Dan’s brother, Nick, by Chief Kevin Fitzpatrick. As all those from the many facets of Father Dan’s life connected and exchanged wonderful stories about the man, one common theme kept arising; Peace. West Islip’s Jeff Kempf On August 14, 2019, the West Islip Fire Department laid to rest Commissioner Jeff ‘Jocko’ Kempf. Fire News offers its sincerest sympathy to his family, friends, the West Islip Fire Department and to the Drill Teams in which Jeff played such a vital role.

Jeff was a forty three-year member, lifetime Raider and ex-Chief of the West Islip Fire

Department. Interment took place at the North Babylon Cemetery.

We offer our prayers to Jeff’s wife Bernadette and to his family. May Jeff ‘Jocko’ Kempf rest in peace as he watches over us from the arch above.
