Has Your Department Adapted? As we enter November, I ask, have you and your department adapted to working with the rules that deal with Covid-19? By now, all of realize that this disease turned out to be a very serious disease and from the onset, the fire-rescue and emergency services worked hard to set up guidelines that protect you, the first responder. At the onset of the new rules and procedures, most of you wore your mask, used the hand sanitizer that was placed in numerous locations throughout the firehouse and kept your distance between one another. Recently, I noticed that many are not keeping their distance from one another, and many of you are not donning your facemask when you enter the firehouse. I know your immediate concerns are not to stop and put a mask on when you are running to don your gear and hopping on the truck to get to a call. However, it is important that after you get on the truck in a confined space that you give thought to wearing your facemask. If you have a call where you are going to work, your SCBA will take the place of the surgical mask. But, what should you do when you leave the building and remove your SCBA? Please, reach into your pocket or see your EMS responders to get a surgical mask. I know, you are think-

ing I’ve lost my mind, but when you are standing shoulder-to-shoulder outside of the fire building, you should don your cloth or surgical facemask. My department held a meeting recently in the truck bay. We kept our distance from one another and wore our surgical masks. Everyone from the chiefs to the probationary members, wore their masks. When the meeting was over, everyone washed up or used hand sanitizer and went home. Let face facts. When large groups get together, it is scenario for the spread of Covid-19. Look at what has happened in certain areas of NYC. In my area, a catering hall was heavily fined when 37 people left the party with Covid-19; 28 children and nine adults tested positive for it. As a result of this incident, 300 people were placed under quarantine and eight schools had positive Covid-19 cases. My point is that it is easy to catch this disease and it probably is just as easy to prevent exposure by wearing your mask, keeping your distance from people and washing your hands as soon as possible. All departments must maintain their training schedule and drills. Officers, if you are going to hold a drill, before the drill starts, remind your members of the protocols that they must follow to

be safe from contracting Covid-19. Safety officers — remind your members when you see them standing around discussing the drill to don their mask. This is November. It is a month to give thanks for all that we have. Your family and friends mean a lot to you. Let’s make sure that we all remain healthy so that we can celebrate Thanksgiving together in a creative safe way. Yes, this holiday will be different, but the meaning will be the same. Happy Thanksgiving to all! - Dennis

Fire Guts House in Setauket

The Setauket Fire Department responded to a mid-morning call on Franklin Avenue off Pond Path. Crews arrived to a house fully involved. Access to a hydrant just across the street provided quick reaction, but a second hydrant was over 1200 feet away. Damage to the house was severe, requiring its demolishment after the flames were extinguished. While the cause was unknown, the single-family house was apparently used for a business operation. The business may have been manufacturing printer ink cartridges. A large amount of shipping material also appeared to have been feeding the fire. There were no injuries reported. Mutual aid came from Stony Brook, St. James, Centereach, Port Jefferson, Terryville, Stony Brook Volunteer Ambulance Company and Port Jefferson EMS. - Fire News photos by Robert O’Rourk

Commercial Fire in Floral Park

In the early morning of September 27, 2020, the Floral Park Fire Department was called to a building fire on Park Place — a restaurant located in a single-story taxpayer on Covert Avenue between Beverly and Marshall Avenues. When firefighters arrived they were met with heavy fire at the rear of a restaurant. A working fire was transmitted and a second alarm quickly followed. The fire went on to reach a multiple-alarm equivalency and took several hours to bring under control. Firefighters’ efforts were hampered by aged

building construction, a natural-gas-fed fire, the inability to shut off the gas, and other obstacles. Various fire departments from across the county were mutual aided to the scene or to standby. Multiple businesses were destroyed by the fire; however, there were no serious injuries. The cause of the fire was under investigation. - Fire News photos by K2MPhotography.com, FirstOnScenePhotos.com and OverTheEdgePhotography.com

Remembering a Brother’s LODD 50 Years Ago On October 10, 2020, the firefighters of East Rockaway’s Liberty Hose Company 2 renamed their firehouse’s street in honor of their member Robert Pryer who died in the line of duty 50 years ago that day. Pryer, then the second lieutenant of the company and riding the rear step, on October 10, 1970, fell from the engine during a fire call for a car fire, suffering fatal injuries. The company posthumously promoted him to captain. Pryer’s family was in attendance for the street renaming ceremony. Company members, department chiefs, and other company’s members were joined by village and town officials in honoring Captain Pryer. The engine that Pryer was riding on that fateful day, although no longer in service and presently owned by a few of the members, was parked next to the street sign which now bears Pryer’s name. - Fire News photos by Steve Grogan, PIO

Teach the Children Well On September 11, 2020, firefighters at Wantagh Fire Headquarters discovered an envelope in the mailbox. Inside was a note which read: “A Special Thank You to Our Firefighters” and “Thank you for being our local heroes!” This kind gesture was from Mr. Hynes’ and Mrs. Barrett’s 4th grade class at Wantagh Elementary School and it included some very nice artwork and notes from the class thanking us for serving the community. We are grateful to the children for all of their beautiful pictures and thoughts. In addition, we thank Mr. Hynes and Mrs. Barrett for not only teaching their children about how to express their gratitude for community service, but also teaching them about the events of September 11, 2001. HAVE CLASS, WILL TRAVEL The Fire Department Safety Officers Association (FDSOA) is known to teach ISO and HSO classes in local jurisdictions if there is enough interest. This year, with the pandemic keeping firefighters and paramedics busy at home, most departments are not allowed to travel. To date, FDSOA has taught one HSO class in San Diego with multiple departments in attendance, and three other ISO courses, in Alpena, Michigan at the Air National Guard Base; Redmond, Washington; and in Chesterfield, Michigan, also with multiple departments in attendance. Chairman Eric Valliere said, “What’s nice about teaching the course in their own jurisdiction is that we can base the curriculum around the way they respond. Each fire department is going to have different priorities for incident safety.” Valliere taught the ISO class in Redmond with FDSOA Board Member Scott Yurczyk. If you are interested in hosting an HSO or ISO class in your district, please contact Executive Director Rich Marinucci at publications@fdsoa.org, or at our website, www.fdsoa.org.

The Fire Department Safety Officers Association (FDSOA) was established in 1989 as a non-profit association, incorporated in Massachusetts. In 2013, the offices moved to Michigan. Its mission is to promote safety standards and practices in the fire, rescue and emergency services community. The association is led by a volunteer board of directors and has a small staff to handle the day-to-day operations. The association is dedicated to the issues that affect the critical role of the safety officer in protecting and promoting the safety and health responsibilities of fire departments, communities and first responders. FDSOA works to helps fire departments achieve proficiency and promote the recognition of training, skills and a secure future. In May 2016, FDSOA won the Paul S. Sarbanes Fire Service Safety Leadership Award for its work over 28 years, “as an organization fully dedicated to the health and safety of the nation’s firefighters.” FDSOA can be found on the web at www.fdsoa.org. Please follow FDSOA on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

FEMA AWARDS SIX LONG ISLAND FDS RADIO FUNDS Grant-Guys Inc. is proud to announce that SIX Long Island Fire Departments were awarded AFGP funding under three awards; one regional award in Suffolk and one individual award in Nassau County and Suffolk each. The Grant-Guys award total over the last 15 days is $1,228,000 for radios alone on Long Island. In Suffolk, the Brookhaven, Center Moriches, and Mastic Beach departments will share a half-million in funds for mobile and portable radios. In Nassau, the Floral Park Fire Company will receive a $50,000 micro-grant for portables and the Port Washington Fire Department will receive $228,000, also for portable radios. The portables will be assigned to the on-order new engine for the company. That vehicle is also grant funded from the 2018 cycle. This represents the fifth consecutive award for Floral Park, led by Chief of Department Martin Tolan. The 2019 AFGP cycle saw the agency awarded $91,000 in attack and supply hose, which will also be on the new engine.

This is the fourth FEMA Fire Award for the Port Washington FD coordinated by Trustee Chris Bollerman. The department has received three AFGP-SAFER awards and

two AFGP equipment awards. The first being for $360,000 in personal protective equipment. The PWFD has been awarded over ONE MILLION IN AFGP funds over the last six years.

Also in Suffolk, the Wading River Fire Department received $244,000 for portable and mobile vehicle radios. All the awards carry a local match and must be completed within 12 months. The grant writer fees will be reimbursed to the departments by the federal government as part of the program rules, further helping the local economy as Grant-Guys is Long Island based. For Suffolk County, this represents the THIRD CONSECUTIVE YEAR that GrantGuys has produced a winning AFGP REGIONAL PORTABLE RADIO grant award. Other recent winners include the 2018 Eastport Regional award and the Amityville/Lindenhurst 2019 Regional radio award. “I’m not positive, but I’m pretty sure we are the only fire grant writers that can claim three regional awards in the same county, three years in a row; anywhere in the country,” said Tom Devaney Director at Grant-Guys.

Wantagh Dispatcher Bill Gilmor Retires On October 5, 2020, Bill Gilmor, Wantagh Fire Department Dispatcher 6, retired after 36 years of service from a career he began on April 4, 1984. He signed on the radio Sunday evening for his last tour and reminisced about some of the major highlights of his dispatching career. Bill spoke of the changes that occurred during his career including how alarms were handled “back in the day” with a plug-in switchboard and paper records to where we are today — utilizing a state-of-the-art computerized dispatch system. This was followed by approximately 15 minutes of chiefs, line officers, neighboring departments and other dispatchers wishing him well and thanking him for his service. Bill also spoke of some of the major incidents that he either dispatched for or has worked during his career including the Avianca Flight 52 crash in Cove Neck, an overturned propane tanker in Seaford, the Suffolk County wildland fires, TWA Flight 800 crash in East Moriches, 9/11, Superstorm Sandy and many other winter storms. Bill entered the Wantagh Fire Department in 1976 and has been an active member since. In addition to being a two-time ex-Captain of Ladder 1, Bill also served as Captain twice on Engine 1. He is a past President of Wantagh Hook, Ladder and Engine Company One, past-

President of the Wantagh Exempt Association and was a longtime department Secretary. Bill is not alone in his service to the fire department. His wife BJ is a past President and member of the Ladies Auxiliary and his son Brian is a Lieutenant on Ladder 1. Brian’s older brother Billy was previously a member of the department. In retirement, Bill will continue to serve the

residents of Wantagh as a member of the department but will undoubtedly enjoy more time to go camping with friends, ride his motorcycle and spend time with his grandsons Connor and Brian. We wish Bill and BJ and their family a long, happy and healthy retirement and we thank him for his 36 years of service as a dispatcher. - Fire News photos by Kevin Regan, PIO

Obituary

Westhampton Beach’s Richard Speed and Richard Van Tassel

The Westhampton Beach Fire Department lost two long-time members on September 18, 2020, when retired Firefighter Richard Speed and ex-Chief Richard ‘Dick’ Van Tassel answered their final calls. Firefighter Speed served in the department for 44 years. He was a 1963 graduate of Westhampton Beach High School where he

played football, basketball and baseball. He graduated from the State University of New York Agricultural and Technical College at Morrisville and Miami University of Ohio. He joined the Army and served in Vietnam after which he worked at his family’s business, Speed’s Pharmacy on Main Street in Westhampton Beach. He coached Pop Warner football and was an avid supporter of all Westhampton Beach sports. He was devoted to his golden retrievers and a pet parrot and spent as much time as possible on the beach. Born in 1942, Chief Van Tassel, was a lifelong Long Island resident. He was a 1959 graduate of Sayville High School and a 1963 graduate of Wesley College. One of his earliest jobs was being a salesman for the Griswold Candy Company, a position that led him to be known as the ‘Candy Man’ of Westhampton. For many years he ran a landscaping and tree service. He was always available

to plow snowy driveways for friends and neighbors, and the wood he supplied kept many a Westhampton home warm throughout the winter. He was also the inspiration for his son Dean’s farmstand, which has been a Library Avenue fixture for more than 40 years. Dick’s greatest loves were his family and the Westhampton Beach Fire Department where he was a 50-plus year member, serving as Chief Engineer from 1983 through 1986. He was also a leading force behind a restoration of the department’s 1928 Brockway in which he proudly rode in the 2019 St. Patrick’s Day Parade. Dick was known for his infectious smile and the kindness he showed to all department members, from probies to chiefs. These two devoted members will be sorely missed. - Fire News photos courtesy of the Westhampton Beach FD
