From the Editor’s Desk Dennis Whittam, Editor
We Made It! As I gave thought to this editorial, I realized that it is for the December Fire News. Wow, December; can you imagine that 2020 is about to end? Covid-19 has certainly made our lives as first responders difficult. Despite having to change the way we exist at the firehouse, we’ve had to rethink how we handled routine events and calls, while major calls also challenged our chiefs. The fire was never the problem. The problem was reminding members that distancing themselves from one another before, during and after the call was a new requirement. I can’t tell you how many times I walked up to the fireground and forgot my face mask. Thanks to our EMS responders who always politely reminded me to wear my mask as they handed me a new one so I could be protected from Covid-19. As 2020 continued and the number of Covid cases dropped, many of us started to let our guard down. Occasionally, we found out the hard way that this horrible disease is still alive and threatens us. I know of several incidents where members received calls from their chiefs notifying them they were
exposed. It may have happened when a member was exposed to the disease at another location and now responded on a call without wearing a facemask. The result of this mistake ended up with members having to be tested and/or quarantined. Please, remember to wear a face mask when you are in close proximity to people all of the time! In many departments, 2021 elections have been held. If your company has new officers, please give them the support that they need to continue keeping you safe. It is also a good time for new officers to sit down with senior members and officers ending their term to discuss the things that can or cannot be done to keep your company running smoothly. Speaking from experience, I always appreciated the advice I received from experienced members. I always learned something important when I took the time to sit with them over coffee and asked for input. I always love to share my favorite drills which challenged members and I love to share the problems I had as a new officer. To the new officers, take the time to share ideas with the people who
probably made the same mistakes you could make on your very first day in office. In closing, I would like to wish everyone a blessed and happy holiday. Remember the people of your community who are less fortunate. Most likely you are not going to be opening your firehouse to your community as a result of Covid-19 prevention. Even though your doors for socialization will probably be closed, you can still let the community know you are there for them. A simple wave of the hand lets everyone know that they are in your thoughts and prayers during this holiday season. Merry Christmas and happy holidays to all! -Dennis

Wantagh House Fire
At approximately 1553 on November 6, 2020, the Wantagh Fire Department responded to a report of a house fire on Seaford Avenue in Seaford. Second Assistant Chief Lenny Mathewson arrived and gave a preliminary report to Chief of Department Ken Kelly. Chief Kelly reported a fire on the second floor visible to the left side of the house and also reported all occupants were out. Engine 3, led by ex-Chief Joe Gross, stretched a line to the right side of the house and went up a narrow staircase to the second floor. As they reached the second floor, they were met by heavy smoke and increasing temperatures as they attempted to make their way to the fire. They went through a small kitchen area and were trying to advance towards the fire but were unable to locate the hallway which led towards the other end of the house. It was later determined that a refrigerator, which was in the narrow opening to a living room area, was blocking access. In the meantime, as the fire rapidly advanced, Engine 1, led by Lieutenant Brian Gilmor, stretched a second line to back up Engine 3. Engines 5 and 7, led by Captain Alex Errico, stretched a third line to the front door and
knocked down much of the flames while crews from Ladder 1, led by Captain Bruce Sparke, and Ladder 2, led by ex-Captain Rich Mongiello, commenced ventilation operations and opened up walls and ceilings. Ladder 1, Seaford Ladder 3 and Massapequa Ladder 2 set up aerials in front of the house and a master stream from Ladder 1 was utilized to fully extinguish the fire, which had extended into the attic and through the roof. The fire was brought under control in approximately 40 minutes, but not before the house sustained extensive damage. Investigators from the Nassau County Police Department Arson/Bomb Squad and Nassau County Fire Marshal’s Office were on scene to determine the cause and origin of the blaze, although it did not appear suspicious. Firefighters were on scene for a little more than two hours and no injuries were reported. Mutual aid came from Seaford, Massapequa, Bellmore, North Bellmore and Levittown while Massapequa, Merrick and Bethpage stood by. - Fire News story by Kevin Regan, PIO; photos by ex-Chief William K. Crazy Socks in Huntington October 17, 2020, was a fun afternoon at the Huntington Community First Aid Squad as it had a visit from John Cronin of John’s Crazy Socks (johnscrazysocks.com). Due to Covid-19 restrictions this was forced to be closed invitation-only event, however it was extremely enjoyable. John’s Crazy Socks is a father-son social enterprise inspired by John Lee Cronin (and his father Mark), a young man with Downs syndrome, and his love of colorful and fun socks, or what he calls his “crazy socks.” John has been designing a new line of socks dedicated to EMS First Responders. As a resident of Huntington and graduate of Huntington High School, John has generously chosen to make the Huntington Community First Aid Squad a beneficiary of 10 percent of all sales.
Recently, John designed a line of socks for firefighters, and is donating 10 percent of all sales to the Nassau County Firefighter’s Museum in Mitchell Field. They also donate five percent of their earnings to the Special Olympics as they’ve played a vital role in John’s development. John met with HCFAS Chief Como, President Fischer, some the operational officers and the board of directors. Additionally several local dignitaries came to present John with some awards and express everyone’s appreciation for his generosity. John was kind enough to give all who attended a pair of the new socks as well as provide water and cookies. Thank you, John, for your support of the Huntington Community First Aid Squad. - Fire News photos and story by John Mancino

Obituary
Sayville’s Nicholas Campson Honorary Chief and 55-year member Nicholas Campson of the Sayville Fire Department answered his last alarm on October 6, 2020, at the age of 93. Nicholas ‘Nick’ Campson joined the Sayville Fire Department’s Hook and Ladder Company on March 15, 1965, and became an integral part of the department. Along with a good friend, he wrote the “Sayville Siren,” a regular column in the Suffolk County News about happenings in the department. Nick held many positions within the department and district including Hook and Ladder Company Treasurer (1968-1972), Company Trustee (1972-1979), Commissioner for 22 years from 1979 to 2001, serving twice as Chairman (1986 and 1992), District Treasurer (1979 to 2009), Deputy Treasurer (2010 to 2013 and Fire Police Lieutenant (2001 to 2009), and Captain (2010-2012). Nick was awarded both the Sayville Firefighter of the Year, and Hook and Ladder Company Member of the Year in 2009 as well as being appointed Honorary Chief by the membership in 2014. Nick was also credited with implementing the Membership Assistance Program, which had a mental health program that was years ahead of its time. An accomplished businessman with his own audio-visual communications equipment and service company, Nick was credited with securing land acquisition and favorable bond rates for the construction of Station 2. He was also an instrumental founding charter member and President Emeritus of the Islip Town Fire and EMS Museum and Education Center which came to fruition following a 25-year journey. Nick was well known for his ability to secure funding sources for this project — it was often said that Nick could actually shake a tree and make money fall out of it! Nick is survived by his children Richard (Debbie), Karen Cavanagh, Susan Torsiello (Larry) and Edwin, grandchildren Keegan, Lindsay, Laura, Kelly, Graham and Katie, three great grandchildren and his sister Ann Fazio. Nick was pre-deceased by his loving wife Ann and son Michael. Nick will also be forever remembered by many friends and brother/sister firefighters including those who considered him a grandfather figure. Visitation including a firematic service were held on October 10 at the Sayville Fire Department with a private cremation following. In lieu of flowers, the family requested donations be made in support of the fire museum to the Friends of Islip Town Firefighters at PO Box 674, Sayville, NY 11782. Nick’s dedicated service to the fire service will never be forgotten. Rest easy, Nick. - Fire News story by Tom Rinelli, photos courtesy of the Sayville FD
