Take Advantage of Winter Can you believe the weather we are having? Oops, I probably just jinxed us and the weather will turn for the worse. The question is; are you prepared to go into battle in subzero weather? Trust me when I tell you that fighting a fire in freezing temperatures is no joke. At the start of this year’s winter, we have been lucky temperature-wise, so far. Keep in mind, that in the blink of an eye, things can change and we can be hit with a record-breaking blizzard and sub-zero temperatures. Are you prepared to deal with frosted windows, slippery roads and the need to be cautious while responding to calls? How about stretching lines or operating from a ladder in sub-zero temperatures? For the new members, remember that frostbite is a serious issue, especially after the fire is knocked down and you are soaking wet. It is probably a good idea to keep extra gloves, ski hats and an extra sweatshirt on hand so that after the call, you can deal with freezing temperatures while packing away your equipment. Talk to someone who lives in a cold climate and ask for suggestions in dealing with the cold. Most
EMTs are aware that the cold can complicate patient care. If you ride a squad, make sure you are prepared to keep the patient warm. Take the time to completely clear your car windows before responding. Years ago, members used cardboard to cover their windshields so that frost didn’t build up. Today, they sell windshield covers for this exact reason. Keep in mind, getting to the firehouse safely is imperative! Winter is a good time to look at your county training schedule. Think about taking a class or two that will help you become a better responder. Prepare now to become next year's company officer. Go online and take those ICS courses that you have been meaning to take. Visit the FEMA website at www.fema.gov/training and take a class or two. As a senior member of my department, I find myself visiting the firehouse for coffee. While the coffee is brewing, I frequently review the pump panel of my truck. It has been awhile since I pumped my company engine at a ripping fire. I want to make sure
that I am not embarrassed when I am the guy responsible to get water to the nozzle crew in a speedy fashion. I have always learned from the best. These are the people who care and reach out above and beyond what they are expected to do. Are you in this group? To all members — not just probationary members — remember that being part of the fire-rescue and emergency services is a privilege and a lifestyle. Lieutenant Joey DiBernardo once said, “Are you on the job or into the job?” Winter is a great time to go down to the firehouse to study your rig, familiarize yourself with the equipment placement on the truck and while you are at it, ask yourself; “Are you leaving a positive mark on your department?” Stay warm and be safe! -Dennis

The Suffolk County Fire Safety Educators Association is a non-profit organization that depends on its members. This organization is looking for fresh ideas and people to pass along our message. “There is no honor in fighting a fire that could have been prevented by education.” Our organization was started in 1983 by a small group of dedicated Fire Marshals and Fire Safety Educators. Sadly, through the years we lost some of the heart of our organization:
John Coen, Ron Stanger and Eric Schall. We are finding ways to change with the times and fundraise to continue with their message. Help us prevent fires in their memory. One way is by the sale of Challenge Coins. If you wish to purchase a Challenge Coin, they are available at $10 each. Send your name, address, phone number an e-mail and your check or money order to Suffolk County Fire Safety Educators Association, 1930 Veterans Memorial Highway, Suite 109, Islandia, NY 11749. Babylon FD Purchases AMKUS Battery Powered Heavy Rescue Tools
On October 15, 2019, members of the Babylon Fire Department were introduced to their new AMKUS Battery Powered Heavy Rescue Tools. The chiefs and officers conducted the training exercise with the expert help of Bob Linster, AMKUS Regional Representative, in extrication techniques and the capabilities of the new tools. The tools are lighter than the tools run by hydraulic supply hoses and electric pumps. The chief’s office reports that these AMKUS tools took much less time to place into operation and were safer to use. AMKUS uses a DeWalt ION Battery System that is easy to change, charge and new replacement batteries are readily available, saving both time and money. The members who used the tools at the drill were impressed with the great features including LED lighting and especially with the ease of operation. The great advantage of the battery powered tools is the ability to use multiple tools at the same time without having to keep changing them on the hydraulic supply hoses. In addition to the spreaders and cutters Babylon also purchased a portable chain saw, 2K saws, and a windshield removal kit. - Fire News photos by Brad Maier

Remembering Valley Stream’s Fallen
On the evening of November 24, 2019, the Valley Stream Fire Department gathered at the Temple Gates of Zion on North Corona Avenue to mark the 40th anniversary of the temple fire that took place there on November 22, 1979. At the fire, nearly a dozen firefighters were injured when the roof collapsed. Among them were Captains John Tate, Jr., and Michael Moran, who succumbed to their injuries in the weeks following the fire. At the Sunday evening remembrance a few words were said recalling that day and a wreath was placed in front of the temple. Once this was done, members of the department relocated to Holy Name of Mary Church on East Jamaica Avenue for mass. An arch detail was setup outside the church and members proceeded inside past the department’s color guard. At the mass, clergy, the village mayor, and Chief of Department Jason Croak all said a few words. Most notably, Captains Tate, Jr., and Moran were posthumously promoted to the rank of chief with badges presented on their behalf. RETIRED FIREFIGHTERS FIND SECOND CAREERS AT SUFFOLK TRANSPORTATION SERVICE “Absolutely!” replied Richie Ruhl, a retired EMS from West Islip, when asked if he would recommend Suffolk Transportation Service to a friend. Richie is a retired EMS. He worked for the FDNY in Brooklyn for 15 years and then switched to Queens for another 15 years. During his last 10 years he served as a lieutenant until he retired in 2015. But he found it's not easy to live on his pension, especially living in New York. So he applied for a bus driver spot at STS in 2016 and started driving soon after. “It’s a solid company,” he said. “The training is above and beyond and management really seems to care. It’s perfect for me.” Recalling how he got the job, he said STS is”"part of my life,” explaining both his father, Robert, and sister, Robin, worked there for years. “I remember when it was Green Bus Line.” STS has been in business for over 70 years. Recognized as one of the best companies to work for in New York State, STS was ranked in 2018 by its employees as a top workplace on Long Island. Gary Stow agrees. A resident of Medford, he served on the FDNY for 20 years as a firefighter in Jamaica, Queens, retired in 2000 and started driving limousines in the Hamptons. But he became tired of the hours — busy all summer and quiet during the
winter. He decided to try STS at the suggestion of his cousin, another STS bus driver. “The company is very stand-up, friendly, honest,” he said. “The best is, no summers, no week-ends, no late nights for me!” On the other hand, Richie, who drives a van during the summer, said he’s “had a blast.” “I have fun driving my mini-van.” Schedules are flexible; other reasons why retired civil servants like working at STS are that they get to work near home, great working conditions, vehicles are clean and well-maintained and the pay is good. Plus, they can get free training for CDL permit and license testing. What it takes to become a school bus driver Children’s safety and security begins with the bus driver. STS bus drivers display a picture ID badge and wear a uniform as a direct identifier for parents, guardians and school personnel. To ensure that safety is top of mind among all bus drivers, STS maintains a variety of requirements for drivers, from an in-depth interview, drug testing, fingerprinting and background checks, commercial driver’s license and clean driving record, in-house training and more. STS is currently recruiting school bus drivers. Interested? Go to suffolkbus.com or email secondcareer@suffolkbus.com.
