COVID-19, A Cultural Awareness As the Covid-19 pandemic continues, we must give thought to returning to a new sense of normalcy. Yes, I believe that when things begin to calm down, which they appear to be doing, our return to what once was will be changed. Before I share my thoughts, I would like to sincerely thank our doctors, EMS staff, nurses, and all hospital employees, who have been through hell caring for the constant string of patients in need of help. I pray for the families who have lost loved ones to COVID-19. As of May 7, 2020, there has been over 265,000 deaths worldwide, related to the virus. On a positive spin, there have been 1,313,251 patients who have recovered from it. Currently, there are 2,262,826 patients who have the disease with over 48,000 of them in grave condition. I applaud everyone who is involved with caring for our patients. I thank our newly graduated nurses for their service before they even get started working. I relate their service to a firefighter going in service during war years, or during other times when the horizon looked bleak. The Wildfires of 1995, the crash of Flight 800, the attacks of 9/11 - I could go on and on. At first, a responder feels exhilarated that they are responding to a seri-
ous call. However, when the realization that you are now part of a horrible situation clicks in, you can become worn out and discouraged. It is easy to have thoughts of being a failure, when you feel helpless because you may not be performing up to your own expectations. You may not have been prepared emotionally for the devastation around you. To all essential personnel, everyone around you knows you are doing the best that you can with the skills you have. Do not be afraid to talk with friends or your fellow workers. Talk to your clergy, or anyone else who may have been through what you are going through. As a firefighter, I look back on some of the serious calls I have been on. Why do I sit at times rethinking the calls that upset me? Today we have a name for this. It is call Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). PTSD is something that has become part of our job. Take a moment to talk to the people around you and share your experiences and thoughts. When we return to normalcy, share time together and protect one another with encouraging conversation. Why do I love starting my day at the firehouse? Why do firefighters say they miss the firehouse? It is because being around the people who have shared
your experiences understand what you have been through. An outsider may not fully understand that the bond we have with one another is what gets us through our rough times. We call this brotherhood. It is that special relationship between close friends or the feeling of kinship with others in the same boat. When two people have a close and loyal friendship, this is an example of brotherhood. When a group of people all share the same goals and tribulations and support each other, this too, is an example of a brotherhood. As responders and what is now called essential personnel, we share the same feelings. You will get through these tough times. Look out for one another and share your thoughts of a better time. - Dennis

Firehouse Kitchen
FD Movie Nights
By Ray Cooney Getting frustrated with this quarantine? Tired of staying home? Frustrated that there is no confirmation of when this will end? Are my fellow firefighters upset that we have lost substantial fundraising ability? Well, then I have the answer for you! Firehouse Kitchen, Fire News and the company Long Island Movie Nights have joined together to convert the now empty and expansive parking lots of the fire departments into pop-up drive-in movie theaters. It’s a very simple fundraiser with little work on your part. Contact Long Island Movie nights at limovienights@gmail.com or call 631-4693545. You can also visit the website at limovienights.com. How does it work? The fire department pays Long Island Movie Nights their fee (this includes the movie licensing, insurance and promotion). LI Movie nights will come out and do a site survey to determine the best layout and maximum amount of cars that can fit comfortably. This is included in their fee as well. The department can then decide the following: what to charge per car (my suggestion is $40/car), will you sell hot dogs, hamburgers, soda, etc., will you do 50/50 raffles, etc.
You can schedule two showings an evening - a family friendly movie and a not so family friendly movie (i.e. The Goonies and then Scream). Whatever you raise above and beyond the fee due Long Island Movie Nights goes directly to the fire department! Advance on-line ticket sales are recommended. Just a note, every showing that they have had has sold out within the first hour!! The movie selections range from such classics as Jaws to more recent movies like Jumanji. Who doesn’t remember their childhood memories of attending at least one drivein movie? In a time when our children and grandchildren are all consumed by handheld electronics, let’s bring this nostalgia back
while doing something wonderful and uplifting for our communities. We hope to see you soon at one of these movie nights. In the meantime, stay well and keep washing those hands! To find out more about Firehouse Kitchen visit firehousekitchenshow.com, or to become a sponsor or have your firehouse on Firehouse Kitchen, email me at firehousekitchentv@gmail.com.

Supporting the New First Responders New State Legislation Would Designate Emergency Operators and Dispatchers Within police, fire, sheriff, and emergency services departments as “First Responders. At a press conference held outside of Suffolk AME (Association of Municipal Employees) headquarters in Bohemia, state legislators and local officials joined Suffolk AME President Daniel C. Levler, in announcing the introduction of new state legislation that would designate, for the first time, emergency operators and dispatchers within local police, fire, sheriff, and emergency services departments as First Responders. Until now, civilian emergency operators and dispatchers were exempt from receiving wages, benefits, counseling, and training, typically afforded to uniformed first responders. Under bipartisan legislation (A-10293) introduced by Assemblyman (and former Emergency Dispatcher in Suffolk County Sheriff's Department), Joseph DeStefano and Senator Monica Martinez, essential workers who perform emergency telecommunications work would be designated as First Responders, enabling them to receive key benefits to mitigate the stress and trauma often incurred through the rigorous demands of their jobs, handling life and death emergencies. The titles covered through this legislation include Emergency
Operator, Emergency Services Dispatcher, Public Safety Dispatcher and Emergency Complaint Operator to name a few. Currently, there are approximately 230 essential workers, in Suffolk County alone, who hold these titles and thousands of essential workers state-wide, working in these titles. - Fire News photos by Ron Monteleone

INTERSCHUTZ USA IN PHILADELPHIA CONTINUES TO GROW Fire service can now register for three-day full conference, Preconference Workshops and Post-conference Workshops featuring known names and up and comers INTERSCHUTZ USA, the launch of Deutsche Messe AG’s leading INTERSCHUTZ brand by U.S. subsidiary Hannover Fairs USA, announced that registration for Preconference Workshops is now open. These workshops join the already exciting roster of educational and training offerings at the show, taking place Oct. 13-17 at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia, PA. Topics covered in these intensive workshops include recruitment, construction of wood frame structures, communication and leadership strategies between generations and technology management. INTERSCHUTZ USA is a new type of fire service event, bringing the global fire service to the U.S. As organizers of INTERSCHUTZ, the world’s largest fire service event, we are bringing INTERSCHUTZ USA to Philadelphia this October in order to provide the majority of the US fire service the learnings and perspectives that define INTERSCHUTZ as truly a global brand. These international features are complemented by new speakers and leaders in the U.S. fire service, people who you will see first here and hear from for years to come. Be it lessons from Grenfell, the management of the Australian wildfires or the response to COVID-19, we are reminded daily of the similarities and cooperation in what firefighters and first responders face. INTERSCHUTZ USA is built to foster those discussions and learnings.
“Like any professional, and maybe more so for firefighters, training and repetition are necessary,” says Ed Nichols, Vice President at Hannover Fairs USA. “What we continue to hear as states open up is that the fire service will need a place to train and learn. INTERSCHUTZ USA will be that place.” For more details on training at the show visit interschutzusa.com/training. Show management continues to work with local authorities to ensure that all attendees remain safe and prevent further spread of COVID-19. “My team has been working with the City, Philadelphia Fire Department and the Pennsylvania Convention Center to ensure a safe, fun experience for all planning to attend INTERSCHUTZ USA. As protocols for social distancing are established, we are instituting them with the safety of the fire service and all participants as our highest priority,” according to Rachel Lesczynski, Show Manager. Hosted in Philadelphia, a car or train ride for nearly 50 percent of the US fire service, the interest in attending this event continues to grow. While the international participation may need to look different due to current circumstances, it will still be the foundation of INTERSCHUTZ USA! All who are interested in attending INTERSCHUTZ USA can visit interschutzusa.com to learn more and register to attend the show. They will have the option to save their spot using Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn to save time during
the registration process, see who else they know is attending and share their registration status with their networks. All registration and education questions can be directed to Show Manager Rachel Lesczynski at rlesczynski@interschutzusa.com. INTERSCHUTZ USA is Hannover Fairs’ USA launch of its highly successful INTERSCHUTZ brand, the leading fire service event globally drawing over 150,000 attendees to the Hannover Fair grounds. The Medford community was asked to please keep his family and friends in their prayers as they are going through this difficult time. He leaves behind his wife of 31 years and three beautiful daughters. Bryan and his wife, Erin Simonson Danziger, are both lifelong members of our community. Bryan will be missed by all of us. Ex-Captain Fred Proverdi - Fire News photo by Ron Monteleone
Members of the North Massapequa Fire Department mourned the passing of ex-Captain Fred Proverdi of Ladder Company 1, a life member of the department whose legacy of service to the Nation and the Department was nothing short of exemplary. “Ex-Captain Proverdi was an icon in our community and a true pillar in our department,” Chief James Maroldo said. “After valiantly serving this nation in World War II, he went onto to display the same dedication and bravery as a highly respected and beloved member of the North Massapequa Fire Department. His wisdom, affability, experience and kindness will sorely be missed.” Fred was born in 1925 in Greenwich Village. After high school, he was accepted into Cooper Union College’s prestigious art program. Later, he joined the United States Navy and was a Gunner’s Mate 3rd Class on LST 48. A decorated combat veteran, he was on Utah Beach during the Normandy Invasion and was
also at the invasion of France during World War II. Several years after the war, he married his wife Josephine in 1950 and moved to North Massapequa, where he lived for 68 years. They had one son, Ronald, who was also a respected member of the North Massapequa Fire Department and a Lieutenant in Ladder Company 1. Fred worked at Liberty Aircraft in Farmingdale before joining the United States Postal Service, where he worked for 30 years. Later, he worked for BOCES in the evening as a custodian before finally retiring altogether to spend time doing what he loved best ... painting. His artwork proudly hung in the post office lobby of both the North Massapequa branch on Broadway and also the main Massapequa branch on Sunrise Highway. According to his family, Fred liked nothing more than to sit with an ice-cold beer and have a good conversation. He loved his two granddaughters and four great grandchildren and will be dearly missed.
