Are You Ready for Something That Can’t Happen? An AS/MCI (active shooter/mass casualty incident) drill was held at Greenport (NY) High School on June 4, 2022. The drill had been scheduled months prior, but somewhat eerily took place 11 days after the Uvalde, Texas, school shooting in which 19 elementary school students and two teachers were slaughtered. The proximity to that latest AS/MCI is what has prompted this editorial. The drill involved the Southold Police, Suffolk Police, North Fork fire departments and EMS services from Jamesport to Orient, and even several South Fork departments, along with moulaged teenage actors to play victims. By all reports the exercise was a success. But what makes a successful AS/MCI drill? According to FEMA’s 2013 white paper, Fire/Emergency Medical Services Department Operational Considerations and Guide for Active Shooter and Mass Casualty Incidents, there are several things that responding agencies need to incorporate into a specific SOP for such an event. Why formalize reacting to an AS/MCI if your department already has an MCI plan in place? Because the “AS” part of the exercise makes it, nearly, an entirely different animal. Some particular areas of focus, become apparent with little thought and are proved out — or have problems made obvious — by an AS/MCI
drill. Some key facets are communication between the parties, including ensuring all parties are not only able to communicate with each other, but use the same terminologies when doing so. This is unlikely to be a problem between FDs and EMS, but it may become a problem when communicating with law enforcement (LE) who, in most instances, will be first on the scene. Other areas of concern will become apparent in frequent drills involving all the aforementioned agencies, as well as local hospitals and trauma units. There needs to be a single Incident Command Post for fire, EMS and LE. The goal of any and all SOPs is to plan, prepare and respond in a manner that will save the maximum number of lives possible. Although in their careers most first responders have encountered some horrific scenarios, the results of a mass shooting of unarmed people — seemingly more often than not children with obviously terminal wounds — will undoubtedly be something first responders will never forget. Many of the first responders will be long-term casualties of this ongoing slaughter, even if they never spilled a drop of their own blood. As psychology researcher Deborah C. Beidel, Ph.D. of the University of Central Florida, who has studied the impact these slaughters have on first
responders, put it, “There are just some events that are so horrific that no human being should be able to just process that and put it away.” Add after-action reports and treatments to the long list of things an AS/MCI SOP demands. A last note … “It’ll never happen here” too often becomes, “Oh my God, how did this happen?” Be prepared for the thing that’ll never happen. And the only way to do so is to train for it. - Gary P. LODD: Hauppauge’s, USAR’s Ex-Chief Stephen A. Feron
Stephen A. Feron, an ex-Chief with the Hauppauge Fire Department, died in June 11, 2022, during a training exercise with the Suffolk County Urban Search and Rescue Team. He was 49. Ferron was attending a training program on the use of personal watercraft (PWC) in rescue operations at Smiths Point County Park. Steve was on land side while a boat and the PWC were in the water. He entered the water and, after several attempts to clear the breaking waves, decided he would return to land to try again later. Shortly after resting he suffered a medical event. Immediate life saving measures were administered by other USAR members and life guards followed by EMS. Steve was transported to the hospital with vital signs but unfortunately succumbed later on. Feron was a second-generation Chief of Department in Hauppauge, serving from 2018 until 2019. His father, Stephen B. Feron, served as Chief of Department from 1985 through 1988. Feron was waked at Moloney’s Hauppauge Funeral Home, had Mass at St. Thomas More RC Church and was interred at St. Charles Cemetery on June 18. Feron is survived by his wife Kelly, son Stephen, and daughter Ana. Good Stop in Deer Park
On May 17, 2022, at 1437, the Deer Park Fire Department was toned out for a residential house fire on Sammis Avenue. Babylon Central received information that a child had called saying the house was on fire. Deer Park Safety Officer Tom Donnelly confirmed the fire and had Babylon Central Fire Alarm re-tone a working fire. Engine 1-4-11 picked up a hydrant and made a quick push with heavy fire rolling out the front window. Firefighters knocked down the main body of fire and then pulled the ceiling and knocked the fire in the attic. Roslyn Heights House Fire Late on May 21, 2022, the Roslyn Fire companies, along with mutual aid units, operated on a fire on Elm Street in Roslyn Heights. The fire was located on the first floor of a two-story private dwelling that appeared to be vacant and undergoing renovations. Firefighters put one handline into operation and had the main body of fire quickly knocked down before it could extend. Levittown House Fire On May 11, 2022. the Levittown Fire Department responded to the vicinity of Old Farm Road for reports of a house fire. Upon arrival, 6200 stated he had an exterior fire that made its way to the second floor. Shortly after, he reported that an oil tank on the 2 side of the house blew. Three lines were stretched and put into operation. Mutual aid was provided by the Wantagh, and East Meadow. Lindenhurst Fire Guts Home
On June 12, 2022 the Lindenhurst Fire Department was activated for a residential structure fire on South Strongs Avenue. Upon arrival, commanding units were met with heavy smoke showing from the home, and re-toned for a working fire. Mutual-aid was brought in from Copiague, North Lindenhurst and West Babylon.

Riverside Vacant House Fire
The Riverhead Fire Department responded to a structure fire last Flanders ambulance was on scene in case of any injuries. The scene night at 2155 on June 8, 2022, on Flanders Road. The first arriving was turned over to Southampton Fire Marshals and Southampton chiefs found a fully involved house. Early Morning Fire in Oceanside
In the early morning of May 14, 2022, the Oceanside Fire Department operated at the scene of a fire on Windsor Place off Rockaway Avenue. Rockville Centre was designated the FAST and responded to the scene with Ladder 447. The main body of fire was located around the attached garage of a two-story private dwelling with extension into the residence. Firefighters put at least one line
into operation, and had the fire knocked down before it could extend. Despite heavy clutter conditions that hindered operations and searches, all occupants made it safely out of the residence. Quick Knockdown in Baldwin On the afternoon of April 14, 2022, the Baldwin Fire Department was called to a house fire on Jefferson Street. Chief of Department Monjardo arrived to smoke showing from a 1-1/2 story home. Bowling Alley Fire
On April 26, 2022, the Garden City Park Fire Department was dispatched to a report of a dryer fire at Herrill Lanes on Herricks Road. Chief of Department Sarracco arrived to smoke showing from the side door of the building. New Hyde Park Dual Response Engine 171 and Garden City Park Ladder 151 arrived and located and extinguished the fire which was contained to a dryer. Carle Place Basement Fire Extends
The Carle Place Fire Department, along with mutual aid companies, operated at the scene of a working fire on Winnie Court on the night of April 7, 2022. The fire was in the basement of a two-story private dwelling with extension to the floors above. Firefighters put at least two handlines into operation. Garden City, Westbury and Mineola were among the departments called for mutual aid. South Farmingdale Camper Fire Spreads
In the early afternoon hours of May 6, 2022, the South Farmingdale Fire Department responded to Midwood Avenue for a reported house fire. Due to a significant smoke column from blocks away, 9701 transmitted a working fire. Crews arrived to heavy fire from a camper that quickly spread to a 2-1/2 story private dwelling. Due to the volume of fire, 9701 transmitted a second alarm. Engine 971 stretched on the camper, and Engine 921 stretched to the interior of the house. Engine
905 stretched to protect the exposure of the second house, shortly after they found fire traveled into the attic. Ladder 978 and Bethpage L3 conducted searches throughout and overhauled the dwelling. Mutual aid came from Farmingdale, Bethpage, North Massapequa, Massapequa and Amityville. West Hempstead House Fire
Heavy Fire on Arrival in Baldwin
The West Hempstead Fire Department along with mutual aid companies operated at the scene of a multiple-alarm house fire on Sycamore Street off Hempstead Turnpike in the early morning hours of March 1, 2022. Firefighters put at least four handlines into operation for heavy fire on all floors of a large, 2-1/2 story private dwelling. The scene was placed under control approximately 90 minutes into the operation and the cause of the fire was under investigation. Freeport Basement Fire The Freeport Fire Department responded to the report of smoke in the basement of a home on Wilson Place on May 22, 2022. Units found a small fire in the basement but needed to check for extension throughout the home. Holbrook Residential Fire
On May 30, 2022, the Holbrook Fire Department was activated for a residential structure fire on Skylark Drive. Commanding units were met with fire showing from the roof of the home. Mutual aid came from Holtsville, North Patchogue and Lakeland. The fire was quickly knocked down by first-due crews without incident, and no injuries were reported. Jitney Bus Fully Involved
The Hauppauge Fire Department and Suffolk Police Highway Patrol responded to a Hampton Jitney tour bus that was fully involved on the eastbound Long Island Expressway just east of exit 56-Wheeler Road on May 24, 2022, at 1145. The driver was able to escape without injury. Eastbound lanes were closed for over an hour while firefighters extinguished the blaze. Islip Multi-Family Blaze The Islip Fire Department was alerted to a report of a residential structure fire on Ard Street off Ohio Avenue. Chief of Department Schroeder confirmed an active second floor fire extending into the attic of a two-story, high ranch, multi-family dwelling. Islip crews quickly made entry, stretching two attack lines and conducted rapid searches which all proved negative. The crews were met with heavy fire conditions on the second floor and in the attic of the home. Mutual aid came from Bay Shore, East Islip, Islip Terrace and the Exchange Ambulance of the Islips. The cause of the fire was under investigation by the Suffolk County Police Department's Arson Squad and Town of Islip Fire Marshal’s Office. HazMat Response to Truck Fire On May 18, 2022, the Massapequa Fire Department responded to a vehicle fire on Club Drive in Massapequa. Assistant Chief Friedland reported a fully involved van. Engine 6311 stretched one line, and Ladder 632 also responded. Dix Hills House Fire The Dix Hills Fire Department responded to a house fire on Westminster Avenue in Dix Hills at 131 on May 13, 2022. Upon arrival, fire was discovered in the attic area of an occupied home. The occupants and pets were able to evacuate without injury. South Farmingdale Kitchen Fire On March 5, 2022, at approximately 1405, the South Farmingdale Fire Department was alerted for a kitchen fire on Meadow Court, along with a dual-response engine from the village. Upon 9703’s arrival, he was met with a significant smoke condition. Engine 971 stretched on the dwelling, and Engine 923 assisted the crew of 971. With one line in operation, most of the fire was contained to the oven, with minor extension. The engine company extinguished the fire, while the truck company opened up the surrounding area. Car Fire in Copiague The Copiague Fire Department was alerted for a house fire on Shore Drive South at 2303 on May 7, 2022. First Assistant Chief Miller was told calls were being taken for a car fire next to a house on Warwick Avenue. Engine 1-3-9 arrived to find a mid-size SUV fully involved in the driveway which then extended to the exterior of the house. Pizzeria Fire in Hauppauge
The Smithtown Fire Department responded to a fire on the roof at Branchinellis Pizza on Route 111 in Hauppauge on May 24, 2022, at 1940. Upon arrival, a fire was discovered on the roofs Q decking which was extending to the cockloft and ceiling of the restaurant and a strip of stores. After exposing the area affected, the fire was quickly extinguished. Mutual aid came from Hauppauge and Saint James. Looking Back
Ronkonkoma - 2018 In the early morning of September 4, 2018, the Ronkonkoma Fire Department was activated for a reported residential structure fire on Dorchester Road. Upon arrival, Chief Tim Blewett was met with heavy fire showing from all floors of the home, and transmitted a working fire. Mutual-aid was brought in from Farmingville, Nesconset, Lakeland, Centereach, Holbrook and Saint James. Operations were kept exterior due to conditions. One occupant was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital for burns. Crews worked for over an hour before the blaze was declared under control. The fast-moving fire completely gutted the home. Massapequa Car Fire
On May 21, 2022, Engine 5 and Ladder 2 of the Massapequa Fire Department responded to a car fire on Clark Avenue at Atlantic Avenue. First on scene was Assistant Chief Zimmerman who found a fully involved engine compartment fire that was quickly spreading to the interior of the vehicle. Williston Park Garage Fire
On May 17, 2022, the Williston Park Fire Department was dispatched to a report of an unknown type fire on Lehigh Street. While en route, units were advised of an additional call for a garage fire. Williston Park 1st Assistant Chief Chester and Chief of Department Duggan quickly arrived to find an active contents fire in the garage. Brightwaters House Fire At approximately 1020 on June 6, 2022, the Bay Shore Fire Department was notified of a residential structure fire on Richland Boulevard in the Village of Brightwaters. Second Assistant Chief Tom Komaroski arrived on scene shortly after activation and was met with fire visible from the attached garage and smoke throughout the house. The fire was contained to the first floor with heavy damage to the 1/2 corner. Otherwise there was no fire damage to the rest of the structure. There was, however, heavy smoke and heat damage. Two handlines were put to use. EMS ACROSS THE ISLAND
First of the Season for Bellport’s Hovercraft On May 29, 2022, at 1819, the Bellport Fire Department responded to a water rescue on the west side of John Boyle Island in the Great South Bay. The SCPD Marine unit could not get close enough to a boat that grounded on a sand bar and called for Bellport’s Unit 5-1-27 hovercraft for assistance, with BFD 5-1-26 as backup. BFD 5-1-27 safely transfered two passengers to SCPD Marine Unit. No injuries were reported. It was the first run of the season for the hovercraft. Fatality at SSP MVA In the early morning of May 22, 2022, the Wantagh Fire Department, along with various police department resources, operated on the scene of a single-vehicle accident involving a car versus tree with overturn. The incident was located on the eastbound side of Southern State Parkway just east of the Wantagh State Parkway. The driver of the vehicle, the only occupant, did not survive the accident. A Helluva’ Way to Wake Up The Westbury Fire Department and Nassau County Police responded to an MVA on Cypress Lane East about 0055 on May 12, 2022. The driver of a pickup crossed a grassy median and lawn of a home before crashing through the front of the house. The truck drove through the front door area, then a bedroom, where a 13-year-old was sleeping, narrowly missing the bed. The truck continued out the side of the house and through a fence before stopping. The driver fled from the scene and was arrested a short time later. Mineola MVA
On May 12, 2022, the Mineola Fire Department was dispatched to a report of an MVA with overturn into a pole on Roslyn Road and Washington Avenue. Second Assistant Chief Strauss was quickly on scene along with Rescue 1610 and confirmed an overturned vehicle with a severed pole and minor damage to a building. The occupant was able to self-extricate prior to fire department arrival and was treated by Mineola VAC. AS/MCI in Greenport On June 4, the Greenport Fire Department hosted a multi-agency Active Shooter/Mass Casualty Incident (AS/MCI) on the grounds of the Greenport High School campus on Long Island's North Fork. The drill encompassed some 24 agencies from the North Fork from Jamesport, east to Orient, as well as several South Fork departments. The exercise was as complete as possible with students and various youth organizations and clubs playing the victims of the shooting that took place during a “pep rally” held at the bleachers of the football field, including wounded and dead students in moulage (the art of applying mock but realistic looking injuries for the purpose of training emergency response teams), chaplains who gave last rites to mortally wounded “victims,” medics, firefighters, police, reporters, drones and more. - Fire News photos by John Neely

Blazing Out of Control on Arrival in Sea Cliff Sea Cliff firefighters responded to a raging house fire that burned out of control for nearly two hours on May 31, 2022. The blaze broke out at the large 21/2 story home on 9th Avenue near Summit Avenue around 1100. Heavy black smoke could be seen for miles as flames engulfed the upper floors of the house. Numerous surrounding departments were called to the scene due to the extent of the fire and the intense weather conditions. Islip’s Don McKenna Honored 50 Years of Service The Islip Fire Department recently held a celebration in honor of Honorary Chief Don McKenna’s 50 years of dedicated service to the community and Islip Fire Department. Don joined the department on February 21, 1972, and he remains an active member. Don has always gone above and beyond including serving as Captain of Engine Company 1, and twice as Captain of the Fire Police Company. Don has also been an avid member of the Islip FD Band, and a member of the Wolves Drill Team. One of Don’s most notable accomplishments was that he was integral in restarting our Juniors program and served as a director of the Juniors from 1986-2007. Many of the juniors that he helped mentor have gone on to become members and officers of the Islip Fire Department. Don joins the elite group of 16 others who have reached this major milestone of serving the community for over 50-years. Freeport Fire Council Donates to Oceanside Terrace The Freeport Fire Council met on May 17, 2022, at Freeport Fire Headquarters. At the meeting Freeport Chief of Department Donnelly (on behalf of the Freeport Fire Department) presented the officers and members of Oceanside Terrace Hose Company 3 with a donation of $1500 towards their recently created #coopstrong foundation. The money for this donation came from the 50/50 proceeds from the Freeport Fire Department’s bowling tournament that was held on May 15. New Chiefs Elected for Locust Valley
On May 14, 2022, the Locust Valley Fire Department held its annual installation of officers and inspection of members dinner dance. Chief of Department Ralph L. Longo, 1st Assistant Chief Brian Nolan and 2nd Assistant Chief James J. Bonislawski were sworn in to their new positions. The chiefs were administered the oath by Vice-Chairman of the Board of Fire Commissioners and ex-Chief Ralph J. Longo, Jr., who is also the father of Chief Longo. Each chief was presented with his helmet. Also honored were ex-Chief Dana Converse who celebrated 50 years of service, and ex-Chief George Turner, Sr., who celebrated 75 years of service. Varese Extrication Tournament
On May 13, 2022, the Northport Fire Department hosted the 15th annual Chuck Varese Extrication Tournament. The annual event is held in memory of Northport Firefighter Chuck Varese who was struck and killed by a drug impaired driver while riding his motorcycle in 2008. For the first time in the event’s history one round of the competition required members to work on an overturned automobile. In the other rounds teams had to remove a pair of doors and roll the dash, create a “third door” and for the final round remove all the doors and the roof. Northport Hook and Ladder Company 1 took first place, as well as fastest evolution time (three minutes and 17 seconds). Nassau EMS Council Awards
On May 21, 2022, the Nassau County Regional EMS Council presented its 2020-2021 awards. Among the many awards that were given out, Elizabeth Weisburd of the Port Washington Fire Department was named BLS Provider of the Year, Amanda Gross of the Wantagh Fire Department was named ALS Provider of the Year, the Farmingdale Fire Department was named EMS Agency of the Year and Stephen Lincke of the Wantagh Fire Department received the EMS Leadership Award. Also being recognized was the 50th anniversary of EMS being a part of Nassau County Fire and Police Departments. EMS in Nassau County was the work of Doctor Costas Lambrew, who was the driving force behind the start of the EMT/AMT training program and the creation of the medical communications system. Lawrence-Cedarhurst Installation 2022
The 140th annual installation dinner of the Lawrence-Cedarhurst Fire Department was held on May 12, 2022. The Master of Ceremonies was ex-Chief Michael Rizzo, the Pledge of Allegiance was led by Frank Abrams, and Rabbi Kenneth Hain gave the invocation. Captain Justin Hoffman was awarded the Fireman of the Year and several members of the department were recognized for lengths of service ranging from 20 to 50 years. The company officers, department officers, commissioners, and chiefs were all officially installed into office. Freeport 2022 Installation The Freeport Fire Department held its 130th annual installation dinner on April 23, 2022 at the Huntington Hilton in Melville. Being installed as the departments chief for the ensuing year was Scott Donnelly from Hose Company 4. Installed as assistant chiefs were 1st Assistant Kevin Collica of Hose Company 3, 2nd Assistant Albeiro Gonzalez of Hose Company 2, and 3rd Assistant Anthony Sotira of Engine Company 1. This was the first installation dinner since 2019 due to Covid. The past three outgoing chiefs were finally able to be honored for their service. The Elmont Fire Department held its 94th annual installation dinner and dance on April 30, 2022. The evening, which began with presentation of colors by the Department Color Guard and the invocation by Father Kevin Smith, had Elmont Fire Commissioner Andrew Bohnet as the Master of Ceremonies. The department’s administrative officers, line officers, chiefs, ladies auxiliary members and the president of Junior Post 709 were all officially installed into office. NCFC 2022 Officers Elected
On May 11, 2022, the Nassau County Fire Commission (NCFC) held its annual meeting at the Woodmere Fire Department headquarters where the newly elected President of the Fire Commission, Leonard Cherson, is a member. Elected to work alongside President Cherson will be Vice-President Patrick Theodore of the East Williston Fire Department and Secretary Brian Nolan of the Locust Valley Fire Department. At the meeting, each of the nine battalion chairpersons were sworn into office. South Farmingdale Awards and Installation 2022 The South Farmingdale Fire Department held its 61st installation dinner at the Crescent Beach Club. Commissioner Suwalski was the Master of Ceremonies and began the program with the presentation of colors and pledge to the Flag. Deacon Barone did the Invocation and Benediction. Commissioner Heffel swore in Chief of Department Klein for his second term. Chief Klein installed Deputy Chiefs Mackie and McFarlane and then the company officers. Cornhole Tournament Honors FF Jesse Gerhard
On May 21, 2022, the First Annual 3rd Division Cornhole Tournament in honor of Firefighter Jesse Gerhard was held at Islip Terrace Fire Department Headquarters. Jesse Gerhard died in the line of duty this past February while serving with FDNY Ladder 134. Jesse was also a dedicated member of Islip Fire Department Engine 1 as well as the Islip Wolves Drill Team. The cornhole tournament was originally conceived as an informal gathering for members of surrounding firehouses to spend an afternoon together
before the Drill Team season opens. It soon manifested itself into planning for an annual tournament with Jesse Gerhard as the namesake. The Gerhard family opened the event with a pledge to the flag followed by over 40 teams competing in the round robin, double elimination event. JOHN CAPUTO JOINS FIRE DISTRICTS MUTUAL OF NEW YORK John Caputo is an active 34-year member of the Farmingville Fire Department running fire and EMS calls. He was also a 15-year member of the Board of Fire Commissioners. He has been a resident of Farmingville his entire life and has a son, John (16), and daughter Valerie (14). He was also a first responder on 9-11 at Ground Zero at 1100, with eight of his fellow fireman. Assigned to the Houses 4 and 15 in Manhattan to protect Wall Street and lower Manhattan. Caputo has many years of experience in the insurance industry starting back in 1988 with Mutual of Omaha for five years then 20 years in medical laboratory sales. He then moved on to Allstate as an agency owner, then AFLAC and now Fire Districts Mutual of New York. He is licensed in NYS for property and casualty insurance and life, accident and health insurance. He is very much excited in his role at Fire Districts Mutual of New York and is looking forward to expanding the business and helping out all fire departments and districts across the state with their Worker's Compensation and VFBL insurances. NATIONAL FIRE SERVICE RESEARCH AGENDA REPORT RELEASED Researchers and fire service practitioners met virtually last year for the 4th National Fire Service Research Agenda Symposium resulting in the National Fire Service Research Agenda Report with nearly 300 recommendations. Symposium participants worked in three facilitated working groups to create recommendations to have the most significant impact on firefighter health and safety. The facilitators then submitted the recommendations as worksheets to an expert jury of researchers and fire service representatives. After review, the jury was able to modify and move recommendations to other domains as needed. The report includes the finalized recommendations and the working groups’ original worksheets. The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF) hosted the National Fire Service Research Agenda Symposium, and UL’s Fire Safety Research Institute (FSRI) was the exclusive sponsor. NFFF Chairman of the Board of Directors Troy Markel said, “Our commitment to create a fire service national research agenda is embedded in the 16 Firefighter Life Safety Initiatives through Initiative 7. But even more critical than that, is our commitment to take a multidisciplinary approach to firefighter health and safety by providing the opportunity for researchers and fire service representatives to map out the future needs of the fire service.” Steve Kerber, Executive Director of FSRI, added, “The research conducted today is without a doubt making a difference in the health and safety of our nation’s firefighters and communities across the
country. It is promising to read these recommendations created with the input of firefighters and envision what the future of fire service research can be.” The report features the working group recommendations based on their domains topical area. The planning committee determined the three domains to be: • Domain #1: Hiring/Retention/ Advancement included recommendations on recruitment, effective leadership, diversity/equity /inclusion/belonging, and hiring, promotion, and retention. • Domain #2: Effective operations included recommendations related to training, tactics, tools, equipment, apparatus, personal protective equipment, and community risk reduction. • Domain #3: Health and safety included recommendations related to wellness, understudied populations, cardiovascular health, cancer, mental health, metabolic health, reproductive health, occupational medical evaluations, fatigue, injury prevention/assessment, violence prevention/risk assessment, and work environment. Montauk Wetdown On May 14, 2022, was a very big day at the Montauk Fire Department, as members and their families celebrated the department’s fire apparatus with a traditional wetdown of seven trucks and emergency vehicles. North Babylon Installation 2022...Continued from previous page The North Babylon Fire Company held its 86th installation dinner at the Huntington Hilton on April 2, 2022. Chief of Department Cullen was sworn in for his second and final term as Chief by his father Dara. The assistant chiefs, executive officers and the line officers from the four stations were installed by various dignitaries. ExChief John F. Caroleo was awarded with the Chief Francis J. Noonan Award, and ex-President Thomas P. Hellum was awarded the Chief Willian Scarangella Award. Most Alarms for the Year 2021 were given to the winner from each station. Service Awards were given to eight members with fiveyears, two members with 10-years, six members with 15-years, one member with 20 years, one member with 25 years, three members with 30 years, one member with 40 years, two members with 45 years and one member with 65 years. Obituary
Medford’s Chaplain Rev. Harold C. McDowell
The Medford Fire Department mourned the passing of their Chaplain and Life Member Reverend Harold C. McDowell on May 22, 2022. He was 95. He was a Chaplain of the Independent Hose Company of South Medford, and the Medford Fire Department when it became a fire district in 1949. He returned to Medford in 1964 and became chaplain in 2002 and had well over 45 years in the department when he passed away. He was a US Army and US Navy veteran and the spiritual leader for the Medford Fire Department. He will be missed. - Fire News photos by Ron Monteleone
