Can You Handle the Challenging Call? This past month has presented the fire service with several calls that have challenged our first responders. The calls made me think about our new officers, firefighters and EMTs, who may find themselves involved with a serious call that they think they could handle. My question to you is, “Are you prepared to handle the challenging call?” Recently, a cemetery worker in my area was killed as he was working in a trench and the sidewall of the trench collapsed, burying the worker in 18 inches of dirt. As the first arriving unit, what would you and your crew do? Immediately, you should be thinking, “trench rescue.” Are you aware, trench walls can collapse in 1/10 of a second? When the walls collapse, the earth moves at approximately 40 mph. Guess what? You do not have a chance of getting out of its way. A single cubic foot of dirt weighs 100 pounds. A cubic yard weighs 3000 pounds. As firefighters, we must discipline ourselves to back off and wait for a technical rescue team to arrive to the scene. Sadly, the buried worker lost his life
and the scene quickly became a recovery effort. This month, there was a serious propane incident on Long Island. Two workers were refilling propane cylinders when something went wrong. The two workers were seriously burned and needed to be quickly transported to a burn unit. On Long Island, we are very lucky to have two state-of-the-art burn units. Nassau County has the Nassau University Medical Center and Suffolk County has the Burn Center at Stony Brook University Medical Center. Once you arrive on scene, would you know how to handle a seriously burned patient? I had one fire in my career that I still have thoughts about. It was one of those incidents that, when you close your eyes, you can visualize the patients uncontrollably shaking as their skin was falling off of their bodies. I was part of the ambulance crew that horrible night. Fortunately, our EMT was experienced and knew how to prepare the patient for transport to Stony Brook Medical Center. Every year, the Suffolk County Volunteer Firefighters Burn Center holds a recognition
day. Several of the doctors talk about the newest equipment and innovations, the nurses of the unit are honored, and checks are presented to the unit from fundraisers held by our junior groups and various firematic organization. My advice to everyone — go to this event! Finally, as firefighters, most of us feel confident that we can handle any job that comes our way. The truth is you may not be able to handle some calls as safely as you think. Please take the time to review the courses offered at your fire academy and enroll in Technical Rescue Courses and Rapid Intervention Classes. Take the time to investigate your Burn Center. Meet with the staff of well-qualified personnel and ask questions on handling a serious burn victim. Who knows, the person you save, could be a member of your own company. - Dennis

Terryville Trench Rescue On June 30, 2021, the Terryville Fire Department was called out to a construction site for a worker that fell approximately 15 feet into a trench. Upon the arrival of Assistant Chiefs Ray Kolb and Craig Brozio, it was determined that the construction worker had severe head trauma and needed to be transported to a hospital as quickly as possible. A Terryville paramedic and firefighter/EMT worked feverishly to stabilize the patient, while the chiefs discussed how they were planning on removing the man from the trench. Simultaneously, Chief of Department Frank Russo and Fire Coordinator Bill Xikis decided to call out the Brookhaven Technical Rescue Team to assist. BTRT members from Setauket and Selden quickly arrived. The patient was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital in serious condition. It was reported that due to the immediate care and quick removal from the trench, the patient survived his injuries. Our goal is to be where our members need us. We already have a robust digital plat-
form and a Contact Center that is ready to welcome our Nassau neighbors and we seek to complement those channels with a methodical, data-driven plan of branch expansion.” About Suffolk Federal Suffolk Federal is a local not-for-profit cooperative financial institution owned and operated by its members. A LETTER FROM RESCUE VEHICLES, INC. (RVI) To all our valued customers, vendors and long time friend: It is with great sadness that we announced the June 6, 2021, passing of Rich Partridge, Sr., President and Founding Owner of Rescue Vehicles, Inc. (RVI). Prior to Rich Senior’s passing, the leadership of RVI was reorganized and I accepted the position of President. This was done to allow us to continue a smooth business transition without any interruption in sales and service. It also ensures that RVI maintains the same business values that Rich Senior has instilled in me and the company. We at RVI are staunchly committed to carrying on Rich Senior’s traditions of honesty, integrity, and compassion for our customers and employees, who we have always considered family. There are relationships formed at RVI that are as old as I am. It was not always just business, but genuine friendships between customers, vendors and employees. I will strive to continue that tradition.
Along with the leadership and guidance of Ray Dyrcz, VicePresident, we look forward to continuing to grow and to serving our valued customers as the exclusive Long Island Seagrave dealer since 1999. Thank you for the many kind thoughts, condolence, and memories that you have shared with us. We find great comfort in knowing that my father was so well loved. And thank you for your continued support. Sincerely, Richard Partridge, Jr. President Rescue Vehicles, Inc.
A THANK YOU FOR A JOB WELL DONE, FROM PROLINER The Covid pandemic brought about many challenges for our community. Many essential workers and emergency service personnel struggled to provide service while navigating ever-changing rules and regulations. Many were working with a scarce supply of personal protective equipment and a shortage of other needed supplies. While co-workers were out sick or in quarantine, many struggled to overcome short staffing by working overtime and extra shifts. Some departments had trucks down as the Department of Motor Vehicles was closed and they were unable to register their vehicles. The staff at Proliner Rescue worked diligently to serve the emergency responder community despite the obstacles that the Covid pandemic presented. Not only did ProLiner Rescue remain open during the course of the pandemic, but also had extended hours to meet the increased demand. In addition to keeping community emergency responders’ vehicles up and running, Proliner distributed thousands of gallons of Clorox disinfectant, several pallets of disinfecting wipes
and stocked PPEs. When parts and vehicle supply were low, Proliner worked directly with Ford and Chevrolet to obtain vehicles and parts thereby returning vehicles to service and helping departments maintain their fleets. Proliner administration contacted local legislators to help facilitate emergency vehicle registration, resulting in successful registrations of emergency vehicles by mail via the department of Motor Vehicles in Albany. Proliner will continue to serve our community and is ready to face whatever new challenges the future may bring. The staff at Proliner would like to extend its gratitude to the emergency responder community and congratulate them on a job well done during difficult circumstances.

Fire Riders “Christmas in June” Fundraiser
On June 27, 2021, the Nassau County Fire Riders had their 15th “Christmas in June” fundraiser for the children who reside at St. Christopher Ottillie in Glen Head. This fundraiser provides toys and monetary donations that are collected and are used throughout the year. This year’s run was a donation-drop-off-only event because St. Christopher still had to follow Covid restrictions. In previous years they had up to 400 motorcycles that would follow
Santa and his sled to drop off the toys and then would have a small barbecue to thank everyone for their donations. Next year they hope to go back to the normal run. As always, they are very thankful for the motorcycling club community and all of the fire departments that help make this successful. The smile on the childrens’ faces says it all. - Fire News photos by Ron Montelone, Greg Steiner President NCFR MC
