Are You Afraid of Rehab?

Most of the firefighters I know welcome the chance to be the first responder on their rig, especially when they know it's a worker.

Yet, there is one duty that most balk at. How many of you cannot wait until the fire is over so that you can participate in Rehab and medical evaluations after the fire?

At times I feel sorry for our emergency medical staff because they are given the serious task of making sure firefighters are ready for the next call, and you may try your best to avoid them. Firefighter rehabilitation is the process of providing rest, rehydration, nourishment and medical evaluation to members who are involved in extended or extreme incident scene operations. We are all aware that the effects of heat stress can be fatal.

Injury from slips, trips and falls, along with strokes and heart attacks are things we should also be concerned about. Believe it or not, about 80,000 firefighters are injured every year.

Over the past few months, you have responded and fought fires in extremely adverse conditions. This winter has been brutal. Extremely cold conditions have tested all of you. About 100 firefighters die each year, with cardiac or cerebrovascular events being

blamed for 50 percent of the line of duty deaths. The purpose of Rehab is to decrease the likelihood of on-scene injury and death.

My opinion is that a good rehab program should be ongoing. It should ensure that physical and mental condition of members does not deteriorate to a point that affects safety of each member or that jeopardizes safety and integrity of overall operations.

Over the years, I remember my department EMTs watching over the firefighters as they operated at calls in extreme weather conditions. According to NFPA 1584, the company or crew must self-rehab (rest with hydration) for at least 10 minutes following the depletion of one 30-minute SCBA cylinder or after 20 minutes of intense work without wearing an SCBA. The company officer must ensure that all members are fit to return to duty before resuming operations.

There are many other concerns that should be taken into consideration during Rehab Operations. I am not the expert. Rely on the guidelines and best practices set up by the qualified people in your county. Your EMS staff should review NFPA 1584, which is the standard on the rehabilitation process for members during emergency operations

and training exercises. Accountability is a key component to your Rehab operation.

I recommend that everyone visits the FEMA website at www.fema.gov, and search for Firefighter Rehab information.

Remember that rehab is a necessary component to all firefighter operations. When you are told to go to Rehab, don’t be afraid.

Welcome the thought that someone is watching over you. As for our EMS responders; I will talk about PTSD in a future editorial.

PTSD effects all of us.

Long Fight at Willimantic 4-Alarm

On January 28, 2018, Willimantic (CT) firefighters responded to a fire on West Main Street. Members arrived to very heavy smoke and fire from a commercial recycling building about 200- x 1200feet and struck a third alarm on arrival. The fire eventually went to four alarms and there were at least 15 departments assisting on scene and companies were still operating there 24 hours later.

Chief Stephen P. Frye Beloved Montgomery Fire Chief Died in the Line of Duty Battling House Fire December 22, 1957 ~ December 6, 2017 An adoring husband, amazing father, wonderful brother, gifted grill master and true friend to many. Steve loved his country and his community and spent many years caring for others at all hours as Fire Chief in Montgomery, MA. If anyone needed help, Steve was always there. His caring for others was also shown during his many years on ski patrol at Blandford ski area. Steve built a beautiful life in Montgomery and was happiest when surrounded by his family. Two weeks ago, Steve hosted a Thanksgiving dinner for over 50 family and friends. His sense of humor was unlike any other and we always walked away from conversations with a smile. Steve inspired countless young people as he had wisdom and surety that came from goodness and genuine caring for others.

Steve leaves behind his devastated but proud family; his wife and best friend, Laurie (Taupier), daughter Karlyn and her husband Brendan Patenaude, his son, Matthew and his partner Kelsey Provost,

who Steve thought of as a daughter, all of Montgomery. Steve leaves his mother, Marilyn Frye, his sister, Laurel and her husband, Steve Placzek of Westfield.

Also, his mother-in-law, Miriam Taupier, his sister-in-law Sharon and her husband David Hamel of Agawam, his brother-inlaw Jim and his wife Nancy Taupier of Agawam, and many nieces, nephews and cousins, each of with whom he had special relationships. He was predeceased by his father Albert Frye of Chicopee and father-in-law James Taupier of Agawam.

Steve also leaves behind an enormous number of close friends, especially Richard Deska of Chicopee and Peter Maziarz of Longmeadow. He was a hero in every sense of the word. He died doing what he cared so deeply about and would be honored at the outpouring of love and support. Special thanks to State Fire Marshall Peter Ostroskey, Chief Russ Anderson, his beloved Montgomery Fire Department, especially Deputy Chief Chris Galipeau.

Fire Destroys Cranston Barn

On the morning of January 7, 2018, the Cranston (RI) Fire Department responded to 7 Mile Road for a barn fire. On arrival, Engine 6 reported a 100- x 80-foot barn completely involved. Additional companies were requested, as there were few hydrants in the area. Shortly after a supply line was laid, a car ran it over and companies lost water. A tanker task force was requested and Scituate provided two tankers to shuttle. Cranston companies were able to keep the fire from spreading to the main house located 15 feet from the barn. Several animals were killed.

Watertown Cars, Structure Fire On December 10, 2017, Watertown (MA) volunteers were dispatched for a house fire on West Road, which started in the garage and and involved cars inside and in the driveway. Crews arrived to a fully involved attached garage spreading to the attached porch and threatening the house.

Mutual aid tankers were requested from Woodbury and Morris, as there are no hydrants in the area. Companies used tank water to knock back the fire while the mutual aid was en route. The companies were able to get the main body of fire knocked down before it was able to extend to the home.

Pembroke Blaze On January 1, 2018, the Pembroke Fire Department responded to a building fire on Furnace Lane in a 1-1/2 story wood frame house. Mutual aid was requested from Hanson. Crews stretched multiple handlines in, but heavy fire soon took over the first and second floors. All companies were eventually pulled. Pembroke’s ladder pipe tried to extinguish heavy fire on the second floor.

Companies had to battle bitter cold with temperatures in the single digits. The Massachusetts DFS Rehab Unit responded and Hanover and Kingston companies were utilized for station coverage.

Fatal Fire in Killingworth

Killingworth (CT) Volunteer Fire Company, along with crews from Chester, Clinton, North Madison, Madison and Haddam, responded to a structure fire on January 25, 2018, inside a manufactured-home community in Killingworth. The homeowner perished in the fire.

Westminster 3-Alarmer On January 5, 2018, fire in Westminster (MA) badly damaged a two-story house just off Route 2. Fire companies arrived to find fire on the first floor and extending throughout. Crews were hampered by extreme cold, with -10-degree wind chills. Mutual aid came from Fitchburg, Leominster, Hubbardston, Ashburnham and Gardner as the fire went to three alarms. It took firefighters about an hour to bring the fire under control.

Tankers Needed in Foster Foster (RI) fire stations were alerted for a house fire on the busy Route 6 on January 19, 2018. Firefighters arrived to find thick smoke pushing from an irregular shaped 1-1/2 story dwelling. Heavy fire was encountered on the first floor as attack lines were pushed in. The OIC requested a second alarm and tanker task force, as the address wasn’t in the hydrant district. Command pulled all crews out as the fire broke through the roofline on the A/B corner. Exterior operations knocked the fire down in about 40 minutes.

Providence Fatal 4-Alarm On January 6, 2018, Providence (RI) firefighters responded to calls for a structure fire with people trapped on Bowdoin Street. Engine 14 arrived to heavy fire showing from a multi-family triple decker and quickly asked for second and third alarms as the fire spread to other structures. As firefighters battled the inferno in sub-zero temperatures a Mayday was transmitted after two firefighters became trapped when the roof of the building collapsed. They were eventually located and removed from the building and handed off to EMS with minor injuries. One woman died in the fire and its cause was under investigation.

New Britain Fire Extends

On January 16, 2018, New Britain (CT) firefighters responded to the fire in a multi-story apartment building on Connerton Street. The fire started in the basement and extended rapidly upward. Firefighters remained on the scene for several hours.

Haverhill House Fire

On December 28, 2017, Haverhill (MA) Fire responded to a house fire on Deer Run Road. While en route, a second alarm was requested by the deputy after hearing a report from police of a well involved split ranch. Crews arrived to heavy smoke and a rapidly advancing fire showing. Firefighters stretched lines to heavy fire on all floors, which had extended into the attic and eventually broke through the roof.

Subzero temperatures, icing conditions and a fairly deep snowpack made for a hazardous scene, but firefighters were able to bring the fire under control within an hour. Mutual aid manpower came from Methuen and Lawrence, while additional companies were staged for coverage.

Fatality at Oxford Blaze A fire caused by a wood stove resulted in a fatality in the town of Oxford (MA) on December 14, 2017. One of the firefighters wasforced to bailout. He was part of a crew searching for the occupant when things became untenable.

Messy 3-Alarmer in Cumberland

Careless disposal of ashes from a woodstove ignited a three-alarm fire that destroyed a commercial garage on Mill Street in Cumberland (RI) on December 28, 2017. The fire gutted the interior of the complex and also destroyed several vehicles that were stored inside. A 300-gallon oil tank ruptured during the fire, which mixed with the water run off required the need for a HazMat team callout. Woonsocket’s HazMat and North Providence’s Decon teams responded to help contain and wash the oil off of the firefighter’s gear and SCBA. - Fire News photo by Ken LaBelle

Bloomfield Basement Fire Bloomfield (CT) firefighters had to deal with frigid conditions on the morning of December 28, 2017, when they were called for a basement fire in an apartment complex. With temperatures hovering in the single digits, crews made quick work of the fire.

Mutual aid was brought in both to the scene and for coverage.

On December 3, 2017, the Vernon (CT) Fire Department Ambulance arrived at Sunset Terrace first and requested a second alarm for heavy fire in the basement.

Cold Taunton House Fire

Taunton (MA) firefighters responded to a reported house fire on January 1, 2018. Engines 5, 1 and 9; Ladder 3; and Car 2 responded. Engine 5 arrived to heavy smoke showing from a 2-1/2 story dwelling on a dead-end street. Car 2 request two additional engines, which sent Engine 3 and 4 to the fire. Crews made an interior attack with several lines and took about an hour to knock down the fire, which was fought in single digit temperatures and below zero wind chill.

Gas Tanks Hamper Stamford FFs

Stamford (CT) firefighters were dispatched to Grenhart Road for a report of smoke coming from a house. Moments later they received a report that there were multiple calls reporting smoke. Engine 3 and Truck 3 were first on scene. Crews went to make an initial push but were forced to go defensive as there were numerous large pressurized cylinders leaking and blocking access to the building. At least one room was heavily involved.

The fire was placed under control a short time later.

New Home Damaged in Westborough Fire The Westborough (MA) Fire Department responded to a structure fire on Preservation Lane on January 19, 2018. A caller reported seeing flames coming from the roof of the home. Car 1 arrived to find a 2-1/2 story wood frame with smoke showing. Engine 4 arrived and stretched a handline to the second floor where they found the main body of the fire. The primary search confirmed nobody was home.

Companies were able to get the fire knocked down in 20 minutes.

Southborough and Northborough assisted at the scene and Hopkinton covered the town.

N. Smithfield Restaurant Fire A well-known North Smithfield (RI) breakfast place on Greenville Road suffered a four-alarm fire on December 22, 2017. The Coffee and Cream restaurant was heavily damaged as a fire of unknown cause started in the Bravo/Charlie corner and extended through the roof. The North Smithfield OIC requested a second, then third, alarm on his arrival. Crews aggressively worked on the interior to stop the spread of the blaze before it reached an adjacent restaurant, The Beef Barn. The fire was brought under control in three hours. The fourth alarm was struck to cover empty fire houses.

Dorchester 4-Alarmer On January 16, 2018, Boston (MA) Fire Alarm advised of a fire in a taxpayer on Washington Street. Engines 16, 52 and 17; Ladder 6 and 29; and Rescue 2 were assigned. Crews arrived to heavy smoke from a single-story, brick, commercial building.

Upon entering, fire was found in the basement and extending quickly up through the walls. Due to a billboard on the roof, crews were withdrawn and an exterior attack was put in place as a second alarm was transmitted. Third and fourth alarms were also stuck with special call for foam. Crews work for several hours to knock down the fire.

3 FFs Hurt in Woodbridge Fire

On January 5, 2018, the Woodbridge (CT) Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to Inwood Road for a garage fire. First units arrived to fire in the garage, which was quickly spreading throughout the large home due to the extremely high winds.

Further making firefighting operations difficult was the bitter cold

temperature, deep snow on the property, and its location in a nonhydrant area. All of these factors brought the fire to a third alarm.

The occupants escaped without injury. Three firefighters were reported to have been transported to the hospital with minor injuries.

Fitchburg Vacant House Fire

On December 2, 2017, Fitchburg (MA) firefighters responded to a fire in a vacant three-story structure on Franklin Street shortly before midnight. On arrival, the deputy chief confirmed heavy smoke in the area and the building venting fire. He called for a second and, then, third alarm. Mutual aid came from Leominster, Lunenburg and Westminster. The building had recently become vacant and still had power and water to it.

Total Loss in Hampden On January 8, 2018, firefighters responded to a house fire on Somers Road in Hampden (MA). The house sat on a hill 1/4 mile from the road and was a total loss - Fire News photo by John DeForest

New Haven Fire Displaces 20 On January 14, 2018, the New Haven (CT) Fire Department was dispatched to West Street for a house fire. The first arriving unit transmitted a second alarm due to heavy fire conditions on the second floor of a 2-1/2-story wood frame home that was already extending to two adjacent homes. Twenty people, eight of them children, were displaced into temperatures that were in the teens. CT Transit provided a bus to act as a warming station at the scene.

Grafton Barn Fire On December 29, 2017, Grafton (MA) crews responded to a fire on Wesson Street. The fire was in a single-story storage barn and went to two alarms.

Bridgeport 3-Alarm Multi-Use

On January 17, 2018, the Bridgeport (CT) Fire Department was dispatched to Pembroke Street for reports of smoke in a storefront. First companies found smoke showing from a three-story brick multi-use structure. The fire proved difficult to locate and it soon escalated to a three-alarm fire as it found its way into the walls and floors from the basement. Pockets of fire were found on all three floors. Four people were displaced and a dog was rescued.

Pawtucket: Cold and Hot

Chicopee Falls Structure Fire

Pawtucket (RI) firefighters battled heavy fire and frigid temperatures on Cottage Street on January 6, 2018. Temps were near zero with a minus-10-degree wind chill. Several companies at the fire were returning from a fatal four-alarm fire in Providence when they responded.

On February 2, 2018, Chicopee Falls (MA) firefighters responded to a structure fire in a building on East Street. Deputy Chief Matthew Cross was in charge. The building was a total loss.

Mutual aid was provided by several area departments and the Massachusetts Fire Rehab vehicle offered heat and hot beverages.

Good Stop in New Haven

Woburn 3-Alarmer

Flames raced through a third-floor apartment in a three-story home on Clinton Avenue in New Haven (CT) on November 26, 2017. Firefighters, under the command of Deputy Chief William Gould and Battalion Chief Ryan DeVito, advanced three lines into the upper floors of the house in order to contain the blaze. The firefloor sustained extensive damage while a portion of the floor below suffered water damage.

Kingston HVAC Fire

On January 14, 2018, crews responded to an attic fire in Kingston (MA) on Spring Street. The fire was smoldering wood around an HVAC unit. The fire was quickly extinguished and there was no extension.

Great Barrington Mixed-Use Fire

Great Barrington (MA) firefighters were called out to the Great Barrington Pizza House early on January 30, 2018. On arrival, significant fire was located in the commercial kitchen. Occupants from the second-floor apartments who were reported to be trapped were accounted for and evaluated by EMS. A mutual aid engine from Sheffield was called to assist. Crews were on scene for several hours conducting overhaul and working on the investigation in conjunction with the state fire marshal’s office.

Fall River Fire Stopped

On February 2, 2018, Fall River (MA) firefighters responded to Flint Hardware located on Pleasant Street for a still alarm.

Members arrived to fire showing and called for a second alarm.

Firefighters attempted an interior attack but were forced to retreat when heavy fire spread throughout and broke through the roof, severely threatening surrounding exposures.

Firefighters went defensive to protect the three, three-story occupied exposures. The hardware store was completely destroyed, while the exposures sustained heat and smoke damage.

Leominster 2-Alarmer On December 18, 2017, firefighters from Group 2 arrived to find a Leominster (MA) dwelling going on the side with fire extending into the home. Two alarms were quickly sounded bringing mutual aid from Fitchburg, Lunenburg, Shirley and Sterling. It took about 45 minutes to bring the blaze under control.

Ipswich 2-Alarmer

Taftville (CT) Commercial Bldg. Fire

Ipswich (MA) firefighters responded to a fire in a vacant house on North Ridge Road in Ipswich. Deck guns were used to knock the fire down, but not before it went to a second alarm.

Fire Destroys RV in Scituate

27 Displaced in New Haven

On December 2, 2017, both the Johnston and Scituate (RI) Fire Departments began to receive calls for an RV on fire on Sevo Road.

Both departments arrived to find an RV fully involved. Two lines were stretched and knocked down the main body of fire. Extensive overhaul was required to extinguish the remaining pockets of fire.

No injuries were reported.

On January 28, 2018, New Haven (CT) firefighters responded to Howard Avenue for a reported sparking light fixture. A second call reported smoke in the premises. Firefighters found fire in partitions on the second floor. Trucks opened up and found some extension which was quickly brought under control. Twenty-seven people were displaced. The cause of the fire in under investigation.

On January 15, 2018, Cromwell (CT) crews responded to a two-alarm fire on Leghorn Lane. members arrived to a well involved house with heavy fire from the rear and through the roof.

Mutual aid from numerous towns assisted. The occupant was transported to Bridgeport Hospital with burns.

3-Alarmer in Leicester On January 17, 2018, dispatchers at the Worcester (MA) Regional Communications Center received calls reporting a structure fire on Foster Court in the Rochdale section of Leicester. Crews arrived to find heavy fire showing from the rear of a wood frame structure.

A second alarm brought in mutual aid from surrounding towns to the scene and for coverage. Crews knocked down the fire in the rear of the house, then vented. A third alarm was called for manpower. The balloon frame construction allowed the fire to extend throughout the house.

Suffield Barn Fire

On December 29, 2017, Suffield (CT) firefighters battled a fully involved barn fire on North Grand Street, battling air temperatures of four degrees and water issues as well.

54 Units Damaged in Norwalk Condo Blaze

On December 11, 2017, the Norwalk (CT) Fire Department was dispatched to the Stonewood Condominium Complex on Richards Avenue for a structure fire. The fire was reported to have started on the top floor, but ended up damaging over 54 units between both fire and water damage. More than 50 people were displaced.

Firefighters from Norwalk, Rowayton, Darien and Stamford spent hours battling the blaze.

Providence Explosion, Fire Heavily Damages House On the frigid morning of January 18, 2018, the Providence (RI) Fire Department received multiple calls for an explosion and fire on Enfield Street. Engine 12 arrived to heavy fire showing from the top floor of an occupied house, with an exposure problem on the number 1 side. A second alarm was struck. All occupants were able to escape, but at least two were transported. Crews made an interior attack but the fire was well advanced and Division 1 ordered all companies to evacuate and begin defensive operations.

Exterior lines knocked the heavy fire down and crews entered and extinguished any remaining fire.

Quick Work in Northborough

The Northborough (MA) Fire Department responded to a structure fire on Whitney Street on December 23, 2017. Engine 2 arrived to find nothing showing from the 2-1/2 story wood frame house.

Crews found fire in a second-floor bedroom and advanced a line to knock down the flames in 10 minutes. Mutual aid came from Shrewsbury and Westborough.

Fatality at Shelton Trailer Blaze

On December 1, 2017, the Shelton (CT) Fire Department was dispatched to a fire on Hemlock Drive in the Fairchild Heights mobile home park. First units on scene found a heavily involved mobile home with reports of someone trapped. Soon after an aggressive primary search began, members were pulled out due to a hazardous condition of several leaking propane tanks in the home.

When members secured the tanks, the search was continued and they found a deceased 75-year-old man who had been in the most heavily involved section of the home. The Shelton Police Department, and Shelton and State Fire Marshals were investigating the cause.

Lexington 2-Alarm Garage Fire

On November 30, 2017, Hartford (CT) firefighters responded to a late afternoon fire on Martin Street in the city’s North End. First arriving units found heavy smoke showing the fire was brought under control with the work of the first-due units.

Firefighters responded to Kendall Road in Lexington (MA) on January 21, 2018, for a two-alarm garage fire. The garage was fully involved on arrival and an aggressive attack knocked down the fire with very minor extension in to the main house. Lexington assisted on the second alarm call.

Garage Fire in Sudbury

Dinner’s Ready

The Sudbury Fire Department (MA) responded to a house fire on Stubtoe Lane on January 7, 2018. Companies arrived to find fire showing from an attached garage. Crews had to deal with singledigit temperatures and multiple frozen hydrants before the fire was brought under control. The fire was kept to the garage area with no extension into the house. Maynard and Wayland assisted at the scene.

Quick Stop in Providence

Several calls rang into the Providence (RI) Fire Alarm Office reporting a dwelling fire on Parade Street on January 26, 2018.

Companies found fire in the attic of a large, 2-1/2 story, occupied apartment building. The fire was brought under control in about 15 minutes.

On December 7, 2017, the Seymour (CT) Fire Department was dispatched to Tomlinson Road for a structure fire. Units arrived to heavy fire showing from the second floor of a raised ranch. The fire was quickly contained to two rooms on the second floor. Oxford provided mutual aid with tankers to the scene.

Fire Damages Chelsea Home

Smoke But No Fire in Windsor

One firefighter was injured battling a December 21, 2017, fire on Grove Street in Chelsea (MA). Companies were dispatched for a report of a porch fire and found smoke and fire showing from the top floor porch of an occupied two-story. Crews stretched lines to the front and rear of the building and had the exterior quickly knocked down, but the fire had already extended to the interior.

Firefighters opened all of the walls and ceiling near the rear and brought the fire under control. Members of the Chelsea Arson Squad were on scene investigating the cause of the fire.

5 Alarms in Brockton

On December 30, 2017, Brockton (MA) Fire Alarm sent Squad A, Engine 7 and Ladder 1 to Brockton Avenue, followed by Engine 2. Squad A arrived to fire showing from a 1-1/2 story wood frame, attached to a single-story wood frame, which was attached to a two-story barn, formerly used as a wood working shop. Car-56 arrived and requested Engine-4 and Ladder-2 to the scene. All occupants were reported out. A few minutes later a second alarm was struck.

Heavy fire had consumed the 1-1/2 story and was extending into the single-story section. All companies were pulled and crews went defensive. Crews were also battling bitterly cold conditions with temps in the teens and occasional snow flurries. Brockton’s Public Works Department dropped sand and salt. Around the 30-minute mark, Chief of Department Michael Williams struck a third alarm. Fire spread throughout the large commercial building, and consumed the two-story barn at the end of the complex. Ultimately, the fire went to five alarms and crews remained on-scene for most of the evening knocking down the blaze and hitting hot spots. Mutual aid came from Abington, Avon, Bridgewater, Easton, Holbrook, Randolph, Stoughton, West Bridgewater, and Whitman. Support were provided by the Boston Sparks Association, Brockton Emergency Management, Providence Canteen, the Salvation Army, and the Massachusetts DFS Rehab Unit.

Abington and Whitman RIT Drill On December 7, 2017 the Whitman (MA) Fire Department hosted RIT training at the former armory building located behind the Central Fire Station on Temple Street. Firefighters from Whitman and Abington participated in several evolutions for rescuing downed firefighters from several different situations.

Canaan Live Burn Several weeks of intense training on an acquired structure ended with a final burn that took the single-story house to the ground.

Crews worked through several scenarios in the morning and then the building was evacuated and allowed to burn as heavy equipment and Canaan (CT) Ladder 1 kept things in check. Canaan was assisted by crews from New Marlborough and Sheffield (MA) who are regular mutual aid partners despite the state line.

Truck Rollover Middletown On December 8, 2017, the Westfield (CT) Volunteer Fire Company of Middletown responded to the report of a truck, which struck a bridge on Smith Street and overturned.

They arrived to find a large roll-off dumpster truck that had been driving with its loading hook in the up position, which snagged an I-beam of the I-91 north bridge causing damage to the bridge and causing the truck to roll onto its side.

The driver self extricated and was not injured, leaving the firefighters to contain the fluid spilled from the wreck.

Power Lines Down in Cambridge

Hinsdale 2-Car MVA, Wires Down On December 27, 2017, Dalton (MA) toned out the Hinsdale Volunteer Fire Department for a two vehicle MVA near Robinson Road. Rescue 4, Car 1 and Ambulance 5 were dispatched. Chief Larry Turner reported that there were two patients, one from each vehicle. A pickup veered of the road and sheared off a wooden utility pole and travelled through a snow bank ending up 20 feet into several small trees. The utility wires were entangled under the truck.

Immediately behind the pickup was an SUV, which was unable to avoid both the pole and the wires in the road. It ended up with heavy front-end damage and was also entangled. Both drivers had exited the vehicles prior to HVFD arrival and signed patient refusals.

MVA in Berlin

Cambridge (MA) firefighters from Engine 9 and Ladder 4responded to a city truck which took down a power line.

The Berlin (MA) Fire Department responded for a reported car that had crashed into the Shell gas station on River Road West on January 19, 2018. Crews arrived to find a midsize SUV had crashed into the front of the building. Four ambulances were called to the scene to transport the victims of the crash. The extent of their injuries was unknown.

CPR at Leicester MVA

Pinned in Auburn MVA

Firefighter responded to a two-car MVA on Route 56 (Huntoon Memorial Highway) in Leicester (MA). One vehicle’s occupant was pinned, and another was found lying on the ground. Crews used chain saws to cut trees and used hydraulic tools to cut the operator out of the vehicle. A medical helicopter from Worcester was called to the scene. There was extended extrication of the operator and at one point his pulse was lost and CPR was performed.

On January 3, 2018, Auburn (MA) firefighters responded to an MVA on Interstate 290 westbound near exit 8. Companies arrived to find an automobile under the trailer of a tractor trailer with the occupant pinned. It took some time to extricate the driver who was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Save at Plympton MVA The Plympton (MA) Fire Department responded to County Road for an MVA rollover. On arrival the vehicle was found off the road on its roof. Police extricated a woman who was in cardiac arrest. CPR was performed and she was resuscitated. Medflight was called and she was transported to Boston Medical Center.

Obituary

Bridgeport Firefighter Dave Gaito

On January 17, 2018, the Bridgeport Fire Department said goodbye to one of its own, Firefighter Dave Gaito, at St. Patrick Church in Bridgeport.

Dave was hired by the Bridgeport Fire Department in 1996 and served up to his passing. He was most recently assigned to Ladder 6, but previously worked on Rescue Company 5 and Engine Company 1, as well as other companies throughout the city in his 22-year career. Dave will be sorely missed by the members of the BFD. In addition to his devoted wife of almost 22 years, Jenn, and his mother, survivors include his cherished children, Jordan, Jameson,

Stephanie, Mallory and Robert, a granddaughter, Isabella Gaito; three siblings, Marcella Gaito Crone (James), Kenneth Gaito (Teresa) and James Gaito; his father and mother-in-law, Leo and Marlene Dorsey, several nieces, nephews, grand nieces and nephews; as well as many dear friends and fellow firefighters.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Bridgeport Hospital Burn Unit c/o Bridgeport Hospital Foundation, 267 Grant Street, Bridgeport, CT 06610.

Worcester Cold Storage Fire 18th Anniversary

December 3, 2017, marked the 18th anniversary of the Worcester Cold Storage Fire, which claimed the lives of six firefighters: Lieutenant Thomas Spencer (Ladder 2), Firefighters Paul Brotherton (Rescue 1), Timothy Jackson (Ladder 2), Jeremiah Lucey (Rescue 1), James Lyons (Engine 3; promoted posthumously to Lieutenant) and Joseph McGuirk (Engine 3). A ceremony was

held at the Worcester 6 Memorial, which included the Rhode Island Professional Firefighters Pipes and Drums, Greater Boston Firefighters Pipes and Drums, New London Firefighters Pipes and Drums, and the Worcester Fire Brigade Pipes and Drums.

On December 22, 2017, members of IAFF Local S-15 presented the colors at the XL Center in Hartford (CT) prior to the hockey game between the Hartford Wolfpack and the Providence Bruins.

Hanover Firefighters Union Holds Shave-Off

On December 7, 2017, Hanover (MA) Firefighters IAFF Local 2726 held a Shave Off fundraiser for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society following their No-Shave November. Hanover firefighters raised money throughout the month for not shaving their mustaches. Hanover Firefighters Local #2726 President Chris Azzizian said this fundraiser was the idea of several union members who decided that they would like to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society after some family members suffered from this disease. The month of mustache growing culminated at the Hanover American Legion Hall where firefighters mustaches were auctioned off for the opportunity to shave the mustache off of your favorite

firefighter. Wives, girlfriends, kids and even a firefighter’s mother donated to shave the faces of the participants. Hanover Firefighter Eric Johnson was able to get over $200 in donations for shaving his soul patch, which he has had for over 16-years. Another $50 was raised while he was in the chair for him to reluctantly shave his head. The fun evening ended up raising around $4500 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (www.lls.org).

Lt. Kevin M. Kelley Memorial

On January 9, 2009, Fire Lieutenant Kevin M. Kelley, 52-years old of the Boston Fire Department’s Ladder 26, died from massive injuries he received when his apparatus came down a steep hill and the brakes failed on the rig causing it to smash into two parked cars and a brick wall, eventually ending up hitting a high-rise building on Huntington Avenue. Lt. Kelley died at the scene. On January 9, 2018, the family and fellow firefighters paid tribute to him.

Smally Wanna B’s Shave Off

The 2017 Team Smally Wanna B’s shave off is now a memory. Friends and brother firefighters from across the state participated and the Rhode Island Firefighters Pipes and Drums Band came out in support. The event raised over $6400. Glenbrook Christmas Party On December 18, 2017, the Glenbrook (CT) Volunteer Fire Department, formerly the New Hope Fire Company, hosted their annual holiday Christmas party. FDIC 2018: NEW CONCEPTS, PRODUCTS, THOUGHTS AND APPROACHES

By Chief Bobby Halton The key to firefighter’s success is training, education, and networking — all of which they aggressively pursue at FDIC and bring back home to local departments. Firefighters see how every element of consequence that impacts firefighting is assembled at FDIC International 2018. The work behind FDIC International 2018 represents literally everyone you could imagine in the fire service.

There will be many new faces at FDIC International 2018 — new instructors, new concepts, new products, new thoughts, and new approaches. The uninitiated think everything is new but insiders, those with skin in the game, the FDIC people, know we are building on the foundations laid by millions who came before us and to whom we are grateful.

FDIC 2018 will offer 28 hands-on training classes, 80 workshops, 200-plus classes, the most inspirational keynotes, an emerging technologies summit, the most comprehensive fire exhibition, the largest stair climb, and countless networking celebrations and unique FDIC traditions that bind us, define us, and connect us.

The Main Program speakers are Dan DeGryse, Gavin Horn, Ted Nee and, special guest, FEMA Administrator Brock Long. The classes will again create the direction, the intellectual drive, the controversies, and the debates for the coming year.

There are literally dozens of special networking events. Beginning on Tuesday night, the Firefighter Cancer Support Network has its comedy night fundraiser; the Fraternal Order Of Leatherheads hosts its FOOLS bash; there’s the Courage and Valor 5K Fun Run; the

National Fallen Firefighter (NFFF) Stop, Drop, and Rock ‘n’ Roll celebration; the MSA block party. Friday is the NFFF Stair Climb and the Indianapolis firefighters’ union party. All week long, the Firefighter Combat Challenge will be going on, as well as dozens of other events and gatherings.

Last year 34,000 attendees celebrated the art and science of firefighting. Firefighters attend FDIC because it represents who we are. We are the fire service, we are the community, we are neighbors, we operate in the real world together, we drill and train together, and we assemble at this FDIC conference and exhibition together. This is our show, firefighters, men and women who have skin in the game, who respond when called, who never accept how it is but only accept that it will be better. The classes, drills, instructors, and speakers were all chosen by us, gritty, street-savvy firefighters who may not have the alphabet after their names, who sometimes drop the wrong kind of adjective when excited, but who struggle every day to be better than yesterday.

This is the conference that no volunteer, no career, no industrial firefighter should miss; a conference that pays the utmost respect to local expertise, that put first and foremost in all they do the interests, concerns, and well-being of firefighters and our mission first.
