Don’t Be Complacent It is 0300 and your tones go off informing you of an automatic alarm at a residence.

There are a lot of thoughts that should be going through your head as you are responding to the call. Automatic alarm, not a commercial establishment, no additional calls, etc. Your dispatcher informs the officer or chief he has no additional information. Your sleepy mind might be thinking about getting the call over with and getting back to bed.

Damn automatic alarms!

You arrive on scene at a typical house in a residential development. No cars in the driveway, and no sign of anyone in the home.

You knock on the door, ring the door bell, perform a 360 and confirm no one is home.

You find a window that isn’t locked, make entry into the home and there is no sign of danger. Or is there? The front door is opened and a few guys search the house, finding a smoke alarm head flashing. There is no apparent reason for the activation. Hey, you

have been at this type of call many times. It is probably a defective alarm head that was set off by any number of reasons.

By now, a neighbor pops in and asks, “Anything wrong?” You go through your usual questions and find out the house was just sold and the new owner stopped by to check the house and cleaned up. You are ready to go home, when one of your crew says he smells something in the basement.

Making a long story short, it turned out the homeowner set off several insecticide “bombs” in the basement to take care of a bug problem. Fortunately, no one was hurt at this call. But this call makes you think of everything you did right, what you did wrong and what could have happened that might have had disastrous results.

All of us, at times, can be accused of complacency. We assume that every call is going to be like the past calls we have had, especially with automatic alarms. Carbon

monoxide, chemicals, gas leaks that show no sign of odor as you are walking around a structure, are all possibilities that we must be aware of when we enter a building. I can tell you to wear your SCBA and facepiece all of the time. But let’s face it, we don’t always do what we know is the safe thing to do.

This insecticide call actually happened.

No one was hurt, but the call made me think that possibly we should encourage homeowners to place signs on their home when they are using total-release foggers or bug bombs. Encourage your community at Fire Safety Day to read labels on dangerous products and not to be complacent of the hazards of using these products. Use every call as a learning tool to stay safe for future calls. It is springtime, the time of the year that homeowners use pesticides.

Keep this in mind when you respond to calls for a “strange odor.”

East Providence 2-Alarmer

On the morning of April 13, 2017, the East Providence (RI) Fire Department was dispatched to Sutton Avenue for a house fire. On arrival, heavy smoke was showing from a single-family residence. As crews stretched inside, they found a heavy smoke condition throughout the house, with the main fire believed to be in the basement. Engine 5 made their way to the basement and began knocking down the fire, but crews on the floors above reported that almost everywhere they opened a wall or ceiling, they were finding fire. As conditions worsened, the incident commander ordered all companies to evacuate and prepare for an exterior attack.

Ladder pipes and deck guns operated and knocked down the heavy fire. Firefighters were then able to re-enter the structure and completely extinguish the fire. One resident of the house was injured in the blaze.

Reading 6-Alarmer

On June 1, 2017, Reading (MA) firefighters responded to a fire in a fourstory brick building, a school-turned-condo. Dispatched were Engines 1 and 2, Ladder 1 and Paramedic 1 under the command of Captain Phil Boisvert. On arrival, companies had nothing showing and were met at the door by residents who reported a smell of something burning on the fourth floor, where crews discovered an active fire. A second alarm, followed in short order by both the third and fourth were requested. Firefighters encountered a heavy fire condition spreading rapidly into the high loft areas of the top-floor apartment, into an adjacent apartment and into the roofline. A brief Mayday was transmitted, but cleared as firefighters were able to back out just as an evacuation order was given. Mutual aid came from North Reading, Lynnfield, Burlington and Medford. As the fire grew in intensity, fifth and sixth alarms were requested by Chief of Department Greg Burns, along with special calls for additional ladder trucks, Somerville Tower 1 and Boston Ladder’s 1 and 3. Crews were tied up for several hours, mainly in a defensive operation. Mutual aid came from over 15 area cities and several agencies provided support and relief services on scene including from the Boston Spark’s Association, Massachusetts Department of Fire Services, the Red Cross and Armstrong Ambulance, to name a few. The building was left uninhabitable, leaving multiple families in need of temporary living accommodations.

Everett Apt. Fire Goes to 3 Alarms On April 19, 2017, Everett (MA) firefighters responded to a fire in an occupied threestory wood frame dwelling on Oakland Street. The fire was reported to have possibly started on the exterior rear porches of the building and then spread to all floors and through the roof.

UConn Fire On May 8, 2017, a third alarm in Storrs (CT), part of Mansfield and home to the main campus of the University of Connecticut, was in the university’s landscape facilities building on Horsebarn Hill Road. The UConn Fire Department arrived to a well involved building and struck the second alarm bringing Mansfield, Willimantic and Willington to the scene. The third alarm was struck and Tolland and Coventry responded.

Hartford House Fire

On May 4, 2017, Hartford (CT) firefighters were dispatched to multiple calls reporting a fire on Lincoln Street in the city’s South End. The first arriving company reported heavy smoke showing.

After an interior attack, the companies were pulled from the building and a exterior attack commenced with tower ladders and large handlines.

Dogs Rescued at Webster Fire

On April 24, 2017, members of the Webster (MA) Fire Department responded to a reported fire in a dwelling located on Abbey Road. Upon arrival, firefighters were met with a heavy fire condition at the rear of an unoccupied two-story dwelling, with extension into the attic and roof areas.

Eventually, three alarms were struck to bring enough resources to the scene to bring the fire under control. Firefighters from Dudley, Southbridge, Douglas and Oxford assisted. Two dogs were rescued during a primary search of the residence.

Somerset 5-Alarm

On April 9, 2017, Somerset (MA) firefighters were alerted to a fire in a commercial building on County Street. On arrival, crews found heavy fire and smoke showing from the Commonwealth Firearms Store. Companies attempted to make an interior attack, but heavy fire and exploding ammunition prevented them from making any headway. All crews were withdrawn and defensive operations were begun. Mutual aid from numerous surrounding communities assisted.

Providence 4-Alarmer Extends

As Providence (RI) was in the midst of a spring heat wave, a still box went out for a possible fire on the second floor of a house on Prairie Avenue. Engine 10 arrived to heavy fire showing, with possible extension to the house on side 2. A second alarm was immediately struck. It was determined that the fire had extended to the exposure and the IC requested a third alarm. Multiple lines were stretched and operated and the fire was knocked down. Four alarms were required to bring the fire under control. Three firefighters were injured battling the fire.

Exposure Problems in Millbury On April 25, 2017, Millbury (MA) firefighters were called to a house on Upton Street for a report of a building fire. En route a large column of smoke could be seen from a distance.

Companies found a well-involved house with exposure problems. Mutual aid was called in to help fight the blaze.

Norwich 3-Story Fire

Recently, Norwich (CT) firefighters arrived to heavy fire conditions in a three-story multi-family dwelling on one of the city’s many narrow streets. The building was clad in old asbestos siding which, along with balloon-type construction and numerous jogs and voids, allowed for vertical extension in multiple areas. Two-plus alarms would finally be required to bring the fire under control. In the end, all city companies along with all city volunteer companies would be activated for either suppression, relief or coverage. There were several minor fireground injuries.

Worcester Porch Fire Extends

Worcester (MA) firefighters responded to a fire in the City of Worcester on Windsor Street on May 3, 2017. The fire started on the rear porch and extended to the attic in a two-story wood frame dwelling. Ladder 2’s crew opened up the roof after the fire took off in the attic.

Dogs Saved in Seekonk

On March 28, 2017, Seekonk (MA) firefighters were dispatched to Hull Street for a reported structure fire. Engine 1 found heavy smoke and fire showing from a three-story wood frame. Additional apparatus from East Providence (RI) was called to the scene. The fire extended to the third floor and attic and companies were evacuated from the building. Suspicious Fire in Lincoln

Calls for a well-involved structure on Breakneck Hill Road started ringing into Lincoln (RI) Fire Alarm around 0300. Station 3 arrived and reported a fully involved two-bay garage with exposure issues. The OIC requested a second alarm to be struck for exposure protection. The structure collapsed quickly after water was applied. The fire was listed as suspicious.

N. Branford Home Destroyed

Wind-whipped flames consumed a Cape Cod-style house on Brook Lane in North Branford (CT) on April 18, 2017. The mid-afternoon fire, which appeared to have started on the outside of a rear porch, forced a woman and her dog to flee from the single-family dwelling. A team of firefighters, under the command of Chief William Seward and Deputy Chief Robert Colangelo, were able to control the flames in just under an hour. A plume of black smoke rising from the blaze could be seen for miles.

Haverhill 2-Alarmer

Haverhill (MA) firefighters battled a second-alarm fire on the heavy fire took control of the third floor. Manpower from nearArlington Street on April 8, 2017. Malden 2 Alarm Fight Goes Exterior

Malden (MA) firefighters responded to Highland Avenue on May 6, 2017, for a building fire. Upon arrival, crews encountered heavy smoke showing from the second floor of a three-story apartment building. A second alarm was transmitted by Deputy Chief Steven Almedia, bringing companies from Medford, Everett and Somerville. Crews were forced to evacuate the building and move to a defensive posture after interior conditions rapidly deteriorated. The cause of the fire was under investigation by Malden Fire and Massachusetts State Police.

Cranston Dumpster Fire

On the morning of April 13, 2017, Engines 4 and 2, Ladder 2, Special Hazards 1, Rescue 4 and Car 3 responded to Buttonwood Drive in Cranston (RI) for a large dumpster fire close to a house.

On arrival, Engine 4 found a fully involved construction dumpster with flames 15-to-20 feet in the air. The fire did not extend to the house and all companies were held to assist with extensive overhaul. One firefighter was injured.

House Fire in West Bridgewater On April 18, 2017, the West Bridgewater (MA) Fire Department responded to Roosevelt Avenue for a house fire. Companies arrived to find smoke showing from a two-story, wood framed, occupied dwelling.

Brockton, East Bridgewater and Bridgewater responded to the scene and for coverage. Command requested a Bridgewater ambulance to evaluate the occupant who reportedly suffered burns. The electrical inspector, as well as the power company, was requested due to downed power lines. Companies had the bulk of the fire knocked down within 20 minutes.

32 Displaced, 4 FFs Injured, 4 Multi-Family Houses Razed

On May 17, 2017, Waterbury firefighters responded to Lounsbury Street in Waterbury for a fire in three large, multiple dwellings. With hot dry conditions and wind, the fire spread across the street to also involve another multiple dwelling. With only so much water and a large amount of fire, the initial effort was to contain the fire so it would not take up the entire neighborhood. The fire was kept to the four houses but they sustained heavy damage and were demolished days later. The fire displaced 37 people and four Waterbury firefighters were injured. Mutual aid came from Watertown, Middlebury, Prospect, Naugatuck, Wolcott and Cheshire to cover the multiple calls in the city and assist at the scene. The cause of the fire was under investigation.

3-Alarmer in Webster

On the night of May 2, 2017, members of the Webster (MA) Fire Department responded to a reported fire in a vacant dwelling located on East Main Street. Webster police reported heavy fire showing at the rear of the vacant three-story apartment house. A second alarm was struck while Webster Engine 3 was en route. Webster jakes attempted to knock down the heavy fire condition at the rear of the building with a blitz line, while other members hand-jacked a fourinch supply line to the closest hydrant. Webster Chief Brian Hickey assumed command, striking a third alarm as several nearby occupied structures were threatened by flames in the early stages of the firefight. As the fire in the rear of the building was brought under control, crews gathered in front of the vacant structure to initiate an interior attack on all floors. The fire was brought under control in about an hour. Firefighters from Dudley, Southbridge, Oxford, Douglas and Quinebaug (CT) assisted at the scene.

Shed Fire in Whitman On May 21, 2017, the Whitman (MA) Fire Department responded to a building fire on Beal Avenue. Box-55 was struck and Engine-243, Ladder-246 and Car-3 responded. Companies arrived to find a large shed fully involved. Engine-243 stretched a three-inch handline with a Blitz gun to the building and was able to quickly knock down heavy fire conditions in the shed.

Maynard House Fire

The Maynard (MA) Fire Department Engine 2 and Ladder 1 responded to a fire in the back of a house on Nick Lane on April 15, 2017. Engine 2 arrived to heavy smoke showing from a splitlevel dwelling and requested a second alarm. Crews found heavy fire conditions with the fire self-venting through the roof.

Multiple large lines were stretched to perform a defensive attack.

Ladder 1 set up the master stream and had the majority of the fire knocked down in 20 minutes. Mutual aid came from Acton, Concord, Stow and Sudbury.

Nice Stop in Woonsocket Woonsocket (RI) Rescue 2 was on the apron of Landmark Hospital when they noticed heavy fire blowing out of the Bravo side of a two-story dwelling on Mailoux Street on April 16, 2017. A working fire was called and a second alarm, as high winds were blanketing the area. The fire extended into the attic space and did come through the roof and dormer on the A-side. The OIC kept the crews in offensive attack for the duration of the fire.

Big Blaze in Lawrence

On May 29, 2107, Lawrence (MA) firefighters were dispatched to a reported building fire in the area of Oxford Street and Milville Avenue. Engines 5, 6 and 7; Ladder 5; and Rescue 1 responded.

Upon arrival, firefighters reported having a 2-1/2 story duplex, located behind a large two-story, metal-clad garage well involved and extending to both that garage and a 1-1/2 story multi-bay wood and masonry garage off Champlain Avenue. A second alarm was called by Deputy Chief Loughlin. Firefighters were able to stretch a

big line between the duplex and the garage and knock down much of the fire on the exterior of the home, which had extended into the first and second floors and attic, as well as the attic of the exposure.

The fire extended into the garage where it took full control of several cars, a motorcycle and various other contents. The garage was gutted. Firefighters from Andover, North Andover and Methuen assisted at the scene while additional coverage for the city was brought in from other area departments.

Well Involved in Woodbury On April 10, 2017, Woodbury (CT) volunteers responded to a well involved residential structure fire. Along with mutual aid companies from Roxbury, Southbury, and Washington they battled the fire in the 2500-plus-square-foot home for about an hour before it was knocked down. Unfortunately, due to the fire being so well advanced prior to it being dispatched, the home was a total loss. All occupants of the home escaped unharmed.

Mayday at Cambridge Blaze On April 18, 2017, the Cambridge (MA) Fire Department received multiple call for a building fire on Reservoir Road. Heavy smoke and fire was showing on arrival, and second and third alarms were sounded. A Mayday was called for a missing firefighter, who ultimately extricated himself. However, the calling of a Mayday automatically resulted in the striking of the fourth (next) alarm. The fire was controlled in about 90 minutes.

Bozrah Truck Fire On April 29, 2017, Bozrah (CT) Fire was dispatched for a reported garbage truck fire on Stock House Road. Before arrival, a fully involved truck was reported and one engine from Yantic was requested. Upon arrival, first-due found just the cab of the garbage truck on fire. Crews had the fire knocked down in a few minutes.

Granby Easter Fire

Crews from three area departments spent Easter morning knocking down a garage fire in Granby (CT) on April 16, 2017. Lost Acres firefighters quickly knocked down the fire in an attached garage with extension into the house. Companies from East Hartland and Southwick (MA) assisted.

Tewksbury 3-Alarmer

Tewksbury (MA) firefighters were called out to a fire on Chestnut Road on May 22, 2017. The first arriving company found smoke showing from a 1-1/2 story single-family dwelling and requested a second alarm assignment. Watertown 2-Alarmer On April 7, 2017, Watertown (CT) firefighters responded to a fire on Main Street. Firefighters were met with a house fully engulfed, and a second alarm was struck. A marijuana extraction lab was thought to be the cause of the fire as the flammable chemicals used for the extraction were ignited, burning one occupant and setting the large multiple apartment dwelling ablaze. All other occupants escaped unharmed. The fire burned for almost an hour before finally being knocked down. Mutual aid came from Bethlehem, Thomaston, Woodbury, Middlebury and Waterbury. The building sustained heavy damage to the upper floors and was deemed unfit for occupation.

Scenic Drive Fire Extends In the early morning hours of May 16, 2017, Worcester (MA) firefighters were called to Scenic Drive for a report of a fire. Calls were being received reporting the house well involved and also reports of an explosion.

Companies arrived to find heavy fire on the delta side of the building. Crews made an aggressive attack but the fire still found its way into the attic.

Bridgeport House Fire On March 24, 2017, Bridgeport (CT) firefighters were dispatched to a house fire on Whitney Avenue.

Upon arrival, units found smoke coming from the second floor of the home. Crews pulled a line to the second floor and made quick work of a bedroom fire.

Hartford (CT) Fire Department units were dispatched to Park Street for multiple calls of a fire. First arriving units found the second and third floors heavily involved. A second alarm was ordered as the fire threatened an exposure. After a short interior attack the crews were ordered out of the building and a exterior attack was mounted. This building was the scene of a fire on February 9, 2017, as well.

Families Displaced in New Haven

On May 7, 2017, New Haven (CT) firefighters responded to a fire in a 21/2 story wood frame dwelling on Blatchley Avenue. On arrival of Engine 10, heavy fire was showing, which quickly extended to the number two exposure, a similar occupied dwelling. A second alarm was transmitted. Multiple handlines were stretched into both fire buildings as firefighters tried to stop the spread of the fire. Firefighters were removed from the original fire building due to the heavy volume of fire on the third floor. The interior operation was continued in the exposure with a successful knockdown of that fire. The fire continued to grow in intensity as companies set up for master stream operations. The original dwelling was vacant, raising the cause of the fire to suspicious. One firefighter was injured with non-life threatening injuries. Multiple people in the exposure house required sheltering.

Overturn with Entrapment in Rockland

On the rainy evening of April 4, 2017, the Rockland (MA) Fire Department responded to an MVA in the area of Market Street.

Companies arrived to find a two-vehicle accident, with one car on its side. One victim from the overturned vehicle was able to selfextricate, but the other victim was trapped. An additional engine was requested to the scene, and a box was struck for manpower.

Abington Ambulance-4 was dispatched and transported two victims to a local hospital. The Rockland ambulance later responded and transported an additional person. The Rockland Police Department was investigating the cause of the crash with the assistance of the Plymouth County Sheriff’s Department BCI unit.

On Saturday May 20, 2017, state police and the Southington (CT) Fire Department responded to I-84 eastbound at the exit 28 on ramp for a tractor-trailer that failed to negotiate a curve and overturned. There were no injuries or entrapment.

For the second time in a week, on May 26, 2017, Southington (CT) firefighters and state police responded to I -84 eastbound on the exit 28 on ramp for a semi-truck carrying a large pipe, which had rolled onto its side going around the bend on the ramp. There were no injuries or entrapment and the saddle tanks remained intact with no fuel leaks.

1 Injured in Worcester Car Fire On March 23, 2017, Worcester (MA) firefighters were called to Lowe’s on Lincoln Street for a report of a vehicle fire with someone pinned in the vehicle. Firefighters arrived to find a pick-up truck on fire in the storage part of the Lowe’s lot. The driver, who suffered serious injuries, was freed by a passerby.

Blue Hills HazMat Call

Blue Hills (CT) firefighters were alerted to a potential hazmat incident on May 24, 2017. Upon arrival, crews found an active refrigerated carbon dioxide leak in the building. Command called for assistance from UConn Health Center’s HazMat team, the State DEEP, and Bloomfield Center for an engine and manpower. Multiple mutual aid was brought in to backfill the town.

The incident was brought under control after crews secured the leak and metered the building.

River Rescue on the Blackstone A couple was rescued from the Blackstone River in Millville (MA) on April 30, 2017. They were each in kayaks when one tipped over. The other tried a rescue, and that kayak tipped as well. Both were lucky enough to cling to a downed tree at the river’s edge to call for help. Millville firefighters donned coldwater suits and rescued both parties. They both refused aid after an evaluation in the EMS unit.

9 Hurt in Worcester Deck Collapse On May 27, 2017, Worcester (MA) firefighters were called to a deck collapse on Mohave Road. Companies found a deck that had failed along with numerous people injured. A party was being held at the time of the accident. Nine people were transported to the hospital with minor injuries.

New Haven Fills Officer Ranks As a part of his continuing effort to upgrade the efficiency of the New Haven (CT) Fire Department, recently appointed Chief John Alston and Mayor Toni Harp administered the Oath of Office to 35 newly-minted line officers. The promotions included a new Assistant Chief of Operations, three Deputy Chiefs, five Battalion Chiefs, 12 Captains, 12 Lieutenants and two Inspectors. Chief Alston recommended the promotions to the Mayor and to the New Haven Board of Alders in order to replace several senior officers who have retired over the past several months. After the new officers were piped-in by the New Haven Firefighters Emerald Society Pipes and Drums, an invocation was delivered by Deacon Martin O’Connor who is a retired Chief of Department. The event was held in the Hill-House High School Auditorium on Sherman Parkway on April 21, 2017.

Puree in blender with spices, chili, lime 1/2 cup red onion, brunoise juice and cilantro. Puree and pour over pork 2 oz. pork belly 1/4 cup JalapeĂąo, brunoise belly. Roast pork belly at 325 for six hours. Pineapple relish Lime wedge 1/4 cup Cilantro, rough chop Calabrian Chile hot sauce 2 tbl lime juice CALABRIAN CHILE Cilantro sprig Honey to taste HOT SAUCE Flour tortilla 4 tbl olive oil 1/2 cup Calabrian chile Queso fresco Salt and pepper to taste 1 cup red wine vinegar Combine ingredients and let sit for a few 1 tbl Harissa hours so flavors can marry.

VIRTUAL REALITY ACTIVITY AT FDIC INTERNATIONAL 2017 RAISES $25,000 FOR TERRY FARRELL FIREFIGHTERS FUND Globe Donates Funds from New Turnout Gear Launch Activity Globe Manufacturing Company continued its partnership with the Terry Farrell Firefighters Fund at FDIC International 2017, the nation’s largest firefighter training conference and exhibition held April 27-29 in Indianapolis.
