15 Years Later NYC Box 5-5-8087 was the location of the WTC attack. I am sure you know this.

This was the alarm box that summoned the Fire Department of the City of New York to the World Trade Center for a plane that crashed into Tower One. Ironically, WTC 1, or the North Tower, was the first of the twin towers to be completed, the first to be hit by a plane on September 11, and the last to be destroyed.

This horrific day has been in our minds for the past 15 years. Yes, that’s right, the attack on the World Trade Center happened 15 years ago. Unlike other attacks that still continue throughout the world, the September 11 attack still haunts us by claiming lives through cancer. If you have learned anything from this dark day, remember that every call you go on must be taken seriously and responded to with caution. Simply put,

never leave your guard down and wear your PPE all of the time.

As in the past, I pause to give remembrance to the firefighters I personally knew who died on 9/11. I think of all of the families that were broken apart by this tragic day.

I commend Commissioner Daniel A. Nigro, Chief of Department James Leonard, along with the numerous chiefs, officers, firefighters and friends in government, who always come to the memorial ceremonies to support the families that have lost loved ones. On September 11, 2016, start your day with prayer to remember the families whose lives were sadly changed as a result of the attack on the World Trade Center.

I still close my eyes and in horror, can clearly see the pile that took away lives and continues to destroy families. Fortunately, the current World Trade Center complex is a

proud tribute to this terrible day. The 16-acre site, the purpose of which is to remember the fallen with dignity, is a reality. When you find the time to visit the area, remember that it is place to reflect and pray for the families who lost their lives. I hope the purpose of this beautiful area, which took 15 years to complete, never falls to commercialization. Our families and the families of the future must always remember September 11, 2001. Visit the site, learn from it and say a prayer for the names that are engraved at the site.

This year, we remember 9/11 through the progress that has occurred over the past 15 years. Thank you to photographer Steve Spak, who has followed the development of this newly created complex over the years and has shared them with Fire News so our readers can be part of the rebuilt area.

Daytime Fire Ravages Thompson Dwelling

On June 24, 2016, members from five Thompson (CT) fire companies responded to a report of a house fire located on Jezierski Road. As firefighters made their way to the scene, a large column of black smoke could be seen for miles. First-due firefighters were greeted with heavy fire and smoke showing from a two-story wood frame dwelling on the corner of Jezierski and Linehouse Roads. The location is void of any fire hydrants or a municipal water system, so water had to be shuttled in by tankers. Mutual aid was also called. The fire had gained considerable headway prior to the arrival of the fire department, and crews were forced to remain outside the structure to knock it down. The roof collapsed into the second floor of the dwelling, and a second collapse several minutes later brought down half of the structure into the back yard. The occupant of the house was not home at the time, and no injuries were sustained. Fire departments responding came from Community, Quinebaug, Thompson Hill, East Thompson and West Thompson. Mutual aid came from East Putnam, Muddy Brook, Woodstock, Dudley, Webster and Oxford (MA).

Worcester Commercial Fire

On July 25, 2016, Worcester (MA) firefighters were called to a fire at Dario Diesel on Southwest Cutoff. There was heavy smoke showing on arrival. Firefighters set up ladder pipes and master streams to control the blaze.

One firefighter was treated for heat related injuries, as temperatures hovered in the 80s to 90s with high humidity.

Vernon House Fire

Vernon (CT) Police were patrolling on Franklin Street early on July 5, 2016, and came upon a working fire. Vernon firefighters responded with an exterior attack due to the fire having a strong hold in the attic.

Old Southington Commercial Building Goes

On June 15, 2016, the Southington (CT) Fire Department was dispatched to Main Street for a building fire. Car 3 observed heavy smoke showing from the town center while en route. A general alarm was struck and companies found an 11,000-square foot, vacant, commercial building, built in 1928, to be heavily involved in the rear. Operations quickly went exterior on the blaze and no injuries were reported.

Norwood 3-Alarmer: Been Here, Done That

Firefighters responded to a suspicious three-alarm fire in a vacant commercial building on Davis Street in Norwood (MA) on June 15, 2016. The building was known to the fire department, as several other fires had occurred at the site in past years. Several big lines, deck guns, and ladder pipes were used to control the fire, and water supply was supplemented by relay pumping water through five-inch supply lines. Companies remained on scene for hours hitting hot spots.

Charlestown 6-Alarmer

On July 21, 2016, Boston Ladder-3 responded for a building fire on Bunker Hill Street. They reported heavy fire, from what appeared to be the rear porches of the building. Ladder-9 arrived and requested a second alarm, reporting heavy fire on three floors.

Shortly after, a third alarm was requested. The fire, which apparently started in the rear of a four-story brick and wood duplex occupied dwelling extended to a three-unit apartment building that was adjacent, as well as another dwelling. Large embers floated through

the dense neighborhood, prompting some residents to take garden hoses to their homes. A dwelling 200 yards from the fire building, caught fire from the embers. Firefighters also battled extreme ambient heat, and five firefighters were transported. Several handlines were laid up and over ladders to battle the fire from the roofs of the adjacent buildings. Multiple large handlines and ladder pipes worked the rear of the building, knocking down heavy overlapping fire. The fire ultimately went to six alarms, bringing several mutual aid companies, in addition to the large Boston Fire Department response. Rehab was provided by the Boston Sparks Association A-10, and the American Red Cross. Numerous Charlestown residents came out and provided firefighters and other first responders with water and other food and snacks. Firefighters remained on-scene throughout the night.

Vacant House Burns On August 1, 2016, Willimantic (CT) Fire was dispatched to Ash and North Streets for several calls for a vacant house fire. Car-1 arrived to find the 2-1/2 story house with heavy fire to the rear on two floors. A second alarm was transmitted soon after. After evaluating the scene and considering the prior history of the building it was decided not to enter it.

UConn tower 122, Tower 101 and Truck 1 took positions on three sides; heavy over growth hampered truck operations. The fire extended into the void spaces and attic.

Douglas 3-Alarmer

Douglas (MA) firefighters responded to a house fire on July 4, 2016, on Gilboa Street. Companies arrived to find smoke coming from a 2-1/2 story wood frame duplex. The house was situated on a hill and had several trees in the front yard, which left limited access for ladders. Firefighters found fire in the attic area, which quickly made its way through the roof. Command struck a quick second alarm bringing in mutual aid. Interior companies reported that the fire was traveling the attic area and knee walls, which were behind lathe and plaster walls. A third alarm was struck to get more manpower to the scene and rotate crews out of the attic area. The fire was placed under control in about three hours.

3 FFs Injured in Coventry Blaze On June 18, 2016, Coventry (RI) Fire Alarm started receiving multiple 911 calls for a report of a structure fire on Glacier Way. Upon arrival, firefighters found a fully involved garage. The fire quickly spread to the remainder of the single-family structure. Three firefighters were injured battling the fire. Coventry received mutual aid from multiple surrounding communities. The Providence Canteen was also on scene.

Westport Barn Fire On June 24, 2016, the Westport (MA) Fire Department received a call for a barn fire.

Friends and family of the owners were able to remove approximately 30 young cows from the barn. First arriving apparatus found the barn well involved. Initial efforts to save several nearby structures including the owner’s home were successful due to the efforts of the Westport firefighters. “Without a municipal water supply in the area, the crews needed to use the initial water carried on the engines to keep the exposed buildings cool until a more reliable water supply could be established,” said Deputy Chief Allen Manley. Mutual aid companies from all over Bristol County and neighboring Rhode Island were called to assist with shuttling water from the nearby Westport River. A large store of fertilizer was a concern and the State HazMat Team was called to provide air quality monitoring. The fertilizer was allowed to burn off rather than risk impacting ground water and the river. The Department of Environmental Protection was also call to the scene to monitor the runoff. Assisting were: Tiverton; Fall River; Dartmouth Districts 1, 2, and 3; Little Compton; Lakeville; Somerset; Rehoboth; Middletown; and Portsmouth. Fall River Special Services worked with Westport Emergency Management to provide rehab.

Wakefield 3-Alarm On June 25, 2016, the Wakefield (MA) Fire Department responded to a house fire. Second and third alarms were ordered bringing mutual aid to assist the Wakefield firefighters.

Long, Hot Fight in Springfield

On June 27, 2016, Springfield (MA) firefighters arrived to find a heavy smoke condition emanating from a multi-story mill building on Wilbraham Avenue. An interior attack was quickly initiated, but transitioned to an exterior attack due to deep-seated fire conditions.

A second alarm was transmitted bringing an additional two engines and truck. The fire burned for more than six hours with conditions

worsening due to a steady wind. The fire spread to the number four side wing before a excavator breached a wall, allowing firefighters to gain access. The blaze was declared under control some eight hours after the initial alarm. Several firefighters were treated for heat exhaustion on scene.

3-Decker Destroyed in Worcester

On June 9, 2016, a three-decker home in Worcester (MA) was completely destroyed in a fire exacerbated by high winds. On arrival, heavy fire was out across the street to a point that fire apparatus were unable to get past the dwelling. A defensive attack was the only choice in an attempt to knock down the intense fire, and a second alarm was struck. As the heavy fire was knocked down and fire-

fighters were able to get inside, the fire re-intensified due to the high winds blowing from different directions onto the hilltop, requiring a third alarm. The roof eventually collapsed and the building was a total loss. Fire officials said seven people were left homeless and a few pets were lost in the fire. The fire is under investigation.

Ansonia Fire On July 8, 2016, the Ansonia (CT) Fire Department was dispatched to Franklin Street for a house fire. First-in companies found heavy fire showing from the first floor of a two-story wood frame house. Members quickly went defensive to knock the bulk of the fire down. Soon after, members went interior to finish up. It was reported that a contractor working across the street pulled an elderly man from the first floor of the house. Companies from Derby, Shelton, and Seymour responded as mutual aid.

Lawrence Blaze Damages Several Homes Lawrence (MA) firefighters were dispatched to Prospect Street on July 6, 2016, after receiving multiple 911 calls for fire and smoke in the area. Engines 5, 6, 7, Ladder 5, Rescue 1 and C21, Deputy Loughlin were on the initial alarm. Engine 6, located not far from that area, arrived and reported some type of outside fire. It was quickly determined that what may have started as an outside fire had extended to a house located on High Street and a second alarm was requested. The fire had full possession of a 2-1/2 story vacant dwelling with extension to two, one-story garages, one of which was attached. Multiple explosions were heard in one garage and several cars housed in the other were damaged. It took crews nearly an hour to bring the fire under control. Due to radiant heat, cosmetic damage could be seen on many of the homes in this densely populated section of the city on Prospect Hill.

Collapse at Lebanon Blaze

On July 23, 2016, Lebanon (CT) Fire with mutual aid was dispatched to Reservoir Road for a house fire. Colchester Assistant Chief 128 arrived to find a home, several hundred feet off the road, heavily involved. Crews laid in down the driveway as tankers arrived. The home was collapsing during this time.

Guilford Fire Extends

A fire in an attached garage quickly extended to the second floor and attic of a large two-story wood frame dwelling on Oakwood Drive in Guilford (CT) on June 25, 2016. Firefighters, under the direction of Chief Charles Herrschaff, struggled to contain the mid-afternoon blaze for more than an hour. An RIT crew from Branford and mutual aid tankers from North Branford and Madison assisted. A drafting operation was augmented by a tanker shuttle to supply water.

Brockton 7-Alarmer

On July 14, 2016, the Brockton (MA) Fire Department began receiving calls for a building fire on North Montello Street, at the corner of Elliot Street. Squad-A, Engine-7, Engine-3, Ladder-1 and Car-56 responded on the initial alarm. Companies arrived to find smoke showing from a warehouse occupied by a furniture restoration company. Ladder-4, Engine-2, Brewster EMS Medic-3 and CA8 responded. A second alarm was struck, and Abington Tower-1 responded. Heavy fire began taking over the three-story wood framed building, which was nearly the size of an entire block.

Companies backed out of the building and began defensive operations. Additional alarms were requested, finally resulting in a sevenalarm building fire. As firefighters used large handlines, and ladder pipes, sections of the old building collapsed. Heavy fire shot through different sections of the roof during the blaze. The fire melted siding on several adjacent houses. Electricity was cut to the area for safety reasons, and some residents were evacuated as a precaution.

The MBTA commuter rail Middleboro line was shut down, as well.

Mutual aid responded from Avon, Bridgewater, Easton, Holbrook, Randolph, Raynham, Rockland, Stoughton, West Bridgewater,

Whitman, Abington, East Bridgewater, and Stoughton. Mutual aid companies from Braintree, Hanover, Middleboro, Weymouth, and Bridgewater covered. One firefighter from Whitman was transported from the scene with an unknown injury.

Fall River Bungalow Blaze On the afternoon of July 3, 2016, Fall River (MA) firefighters responded to a 1-1/2 story bungalow on Newhall Street. Heavy fire was venting from the gable end of the building when command ordered an evacuation. After the heavy fire was knocked down, command resumed interior operations. Because of high heat and humidity relief companies were ordered to the scene.

Fire then MVA in Lancaster Lancaster (MA) firefighters were called to a car carrier tractortrailer on fire at the Route 2 rest area. State Police arrived as the driver of the car carrier was pulling this tractor away from the trailer. Lancaster firefighters arrived and stretched a line and knocked down the fire. Just then an SUV with four young adults who were rubbernecking the fire was rammed by a smaller commercial truck. The SUV occupants were transported to Health Alliance Hospital.

House Destroyed in Baltic

The Baltic (CT) Fire Department along with mutual aid from several neighboring communities arrived at a Whitehall Drive address to find an occupied two-story colonial fully involved. All occupants evacuated the building prior to firefighters arrival. A tanker shuttle was established, and final extinguishment of the collapsed structure took another two hours.

Amherst Apartment Destroyed

A fast moving second alarm fire destroyed an apartment building on Belchertown Road at Amherst Commons in Amherst (MA) on June 4, 2016. Workers in the building noticed flames from a ceiling vent and alerted residents and called 911. Firefighters encountered

heavy fire conditions in the trussed roof attic space as they arrived.

The roof collapsed as it was severely compromised by the heavy fire.

Two ladder pipes, deck guns, and handlines were used to knock the fire down.

Duxbury, Pembroke Respond to Car Fire Duxbury and Pembroke (MA) firefighters battled a car fire on Route 3. Because of the smoke the State Police had to shut down the highway for a short time.

Cover Story

On June 13, 2016, Providence (RI) firefighters responded to the master box at the Roger Williams Park Carriage House. Engine 10 arrived first and reported heavy fire showing from a commercial garage. Ladder 5 arrived and transmitted a second alarm and ordered all companies to begin a defensive attack.

Numerous chemicals and propane tanks were known to be stored in the garage.

Extremely low water pressure hampered firefighting efforts, but crews were able to locate a draft site and establish a positive water source. Numerous large lines and ladder pipes knocked down the fire. Crews remained on scene for several hours to completely extinguish the fire. Four firefighters were taken to RIH with unknown injuries. The cause of the fire was under investigation.

N. Attleboro Suspicious Fire

A suspicious fire broke out in North Attleboro (MA) on East Street in the large vacant building on July 17, 2016. The fire burned a hole through the floor on the third story of the decrepit, unused factory. The building has long stoked safety concerns in town as plans for redevelopment stalled. The fire was extinguished within a few minutes, keeping the flames from spreading to the rest of the structure. The fire was under investigation.

3-Alarm Brush Fire in Leominster On July 20, 2016, Leominster (MA) firefighters were dispatched for smoke in the Jungle Road area. A recall was ordered as it appeared to be a large isolated brush fire, but eventually turned into a three-alarm incident. Mutual aid companies assisted in knocking down the fire after about four hours of hard, hot, smoky work.

Fatality at Hudson Fire On June 23, 2016, the Hudson (MA) Fire Department was dispatched to Baben Road for a report of a smoke condition in a house. Crews arrived to find heavy smoke in a single-story house but little to no heat. Heavy heat damage was found throughout the house and a 76-year-old female resident was found deceased in the living room. The cause of the incident was found to be careless disposal of smoking materials. Companies were tied up for the rest of the afternoon during the investigation. No other injuries were reported.

Winchester 2-Alarm Quickly Snuffed On June 5, 2016, the Winchester (MA) Fire Department responded to a house fire on Main Street. Heavy smoke was showing on arrival and a second alarm was sounded. Mutual aid came from Medford, Stoneham and Woburn and the fire was quickly controlled.

Truck Rollover at Construction Site

On July 8, 2016, the Holbrook (MA) Fire Department responded to a report of an overturned vehicle at the Holbrook Sportsmen’s Club on Quincy Street. Companies arrived to find an 18-wheeled dump truck on its side with the driver trapped. Command requested mutual aid from Brockton for assistance with the extrication and Brockton Squad-A, the TSU, and the Deputy Chief (Car-56) responded. Prior to Squad-A’s arrival Holbrook firefighters were able to extricate the driver. Holbrook’s ambulance transported the victim to the South Shore Hospital. Leaking fuel from the truck was a cause of concern.

Quick Extrication in Glastonbury Glastonbury (CT) crews responded to a rollover MVA with entrapment on July 7, 2016, on Hebron Avenue. Stations 4 and 3 responded and completed extrication in about 10 minutes. One occupant was transported to the hospital.

Hinsdale Rollover On July 14, 2016, the Hinsdale (MA) Volunteer Fire Company was dispatched for an MVA on Old Dalton Road with possible entrapment and injuries. Rescue 4, Squad 1 and Quick Attack 8 were dispatched as was the department ambulance. On arrival, Chief Larry Turner found a sedan had failed to negotiate a curve and rolled several times, ending up approximately 40 feet off the road in a cluster of small trees and brush. The driver had self extricated. Road conditions were slick after a fast moving thunderstorm hit the area after two days of 90 degree weather. The 17-year-old male driver was put in c-spine precautions and transported to Berkshire Medical Center.

Lawrence MVA A Lawrence (MA) police officer on-sighted a two-car MVA rollover on Winthrop Avenue (Route 114) in front of the Wendy’s restaurant on July 29, 2016. Lawrence Fire dispatched Engine 9, Ladder 4, Rescue 1 and C21 Deputy Loughlin to the scene. It was quickly determined that all occupants self-extricated and only one victim was transported to Lawrence General as a result.

Car Into the Woods in Whitman

On July 31, 2016, the Whitman (MA) Fire Department responded to an MVA in the area of Bedford Street (Route-27), near the Brockton city line. Ambulance-247, Engine-243 and Car-3 responded. Companies arrived to find a single-vehicle MVA with the vehicle into the woods and a person entrapped. A box was struck for manpower. The patient was transported to the South Shore Hospital, with an additional paramedic on-board. This was the first time the Town of Whitman’s new set of Homatro battery operated

extrication equipment was utilized. The Homatro battery operated cutters, spreaders, and ram set was recently purchased and delivered with the Town’s new Engine-243, a 2016 E-One e-MAX 1500/750/30F pumper. This engine replaces the old Engine-3, a 1978 Hendrickson with a 1994 E-One Glider Kit 1000/500.

On July 9, 2016, Andover (MA) firefighters responded to a trash truck rollover. Its unknown if weather or operator error caused this truck to veer off the road at Canterbury Street at Scotland Drive. The operator suffered minor injuries and was transported by Andover Fire EMS personnel to Lawrence General Hospital. Two heavy-duty wreckers were brought in to right the truck, which was the only vehicle involved.

A Good Reason for CO Detectors

On May 11, 2016, Leominster (MA) firefighters responded to a call at a large, 2-1/2 story home to find the carbon monoxide levels in the home over 500 ppm (the state considers levels below nine parts per million to be safe). Three engines and a truck were dispatched. The homeowners were checked for CO in their blood. National Grid was called to the scene and the gas to the home was shut down. Firefighters had to use their SCBAs until they could get the levels back down and the gas off. Firefighters were alerted to the problem when the homeowners went to check on an unoccupied first-floor unit after hearing the carbon monoxide detectors going off. The elevated levels were found to be caused by a broken exhaust pipe on a heating unit.

Small Plane Crash in Haddam Haddam (CT) Volunteer Fire Company with mutual aid from East Haddam, responded to a plane crash on July 23, 2016, near the Connecticut River.

A single-engine plane, which took off from the nearby Goodspeed Airport, spiraled down and crashed into the roof of a home. The pilot was extricated by passersbys, firefighters and East Haddam Ambulance personnel from the second story of the home. Life Star helicopter transported the pilot to Hartford Hospital with serious injuries. The homeowner was home at the time but was uninjured.

Kayaker Drowns in Halifax

On June 3, 2016, the Halifax (MA) Fire Department received a call reporting a person had fallen out of a kayak on Silver Lake. Halifax Police and Fire responded. The Plymouth County Technical Rescue Team’s dive team was activated, and members from across the county responded. In addition to the Halifax boat, Duxbury’s boat, and Bridgewater’s airboat were utilized for dive operations. Multiple mutual aid companies responded. The Massachusetts State Police Dive Team, the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services Rehab Unit, and the Providence Canteen truck among others. The search was called off at night and resumed the following morning, lasting again until night. Using side-scan sonar, the kayaker’s body — that of a 26-year-old male — was recovered on day three.

Fatality at Rocky Hill Rescue On July 18, 2016, Rocky Hill (CT) firefighters responded to confined space incident on Town Line Road. A worker suffered a medical emergency while in a crawl space. The operation turned into a removal after EMS personal examined the patient. The fire department remained on the scene to assist the police and the medical examiner.

Baseball After September 11 A Ball, a Homer and the Healing of America Fifteen years after the horrific events of September 11, 2001, the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum paid tribute to baseball’s role in the healing process with a six-month exhibit, as well as with a special recognition during the recent Hall of Fame Weekend.

On June 18, the Museum cut the ribbon on an exhibit case that will remain open through the end of the year. The centerpiece in ‘Baseball After 9/11’ will be the Mets jersey 2016 Hall of Fame electee Mike Piazza wore on September 21, 2001, in the first game played in New York after the attack on the World Trade Center. Piazza’s dramatic eighth inning home run propelled the Mets to a 3-2 victory over Atlanta at Shea Stadium.

Additional artifacts in ‘Baseball After 9/11’ included both the NYPD hat worn by Mets manager Bobby Valentine and the FDNY hat worn by Mets pitcher John Franco on September 21, 2001, as well as a game ticket to the scheduled September 11 game at Yankee Stadium between the Yankees and the Chicago White Sox. During the Hall of Fame Weekend, as part of the annual awards presentation, FDNY Battalion Chief Vin Mavaro shared his thoughts and memories of baseball’s role in helping New York City — and the nation — begin to recover from the 9/11 attacks. In late September 2001, Mavaro found a baseball in the rubble of the World Trade Center.

Upon donating it to the museum, Mavaro explained at the time that the ball offered an unexpected, almost visceral, reminder of the ideal so many of us learned as children, the notion that a game — and its immortals — can have melding, communal power.

Mavaro was recognized along with 2016 J.G. Taylor Spink Award Winner Dan Shaughnessy and 2016 Ford C. Frick Award winner Graham McNamee.

Remembering PFC Coutu Fundraiser

Firefighters from Pawtucket, Cumberland, North Kingstown, Narragansett (all RI), and Westport (MA) participated in the PFC Kyle Coutu Memorial 5k Race held at Slater Park on June 5, 2016.

The firefighters donned full PPE and wore SCBA during the race.

The proceeds from this event went to the PFC Kyle Joseph Coutu

Memorial Fund, which was created in the memory of Coutu, a 2009 Tolman High graduate and three-sport standout and a U.S. Marine who was killed on February 18, 2010, while supporting combat operations in Afghanistan.

Obituary

Stoneham’s David Atherton

The family of Stoneham Firefighter David Atherton received his fire helmet at his funeral on July 7, 2016. He was an active duty member of the Massachusetts Army National Guard and the Stoneham Fire Department. He died unexpectedly in late June and was laid to rest with full military and fire department honors.

Bridgeport FD Donates $43Gs to Burn Center

On June 6, 2016, Bridgeport (CT) Fire Captain Sal Emanuel, his wife Melissa (a Bridgeport Hospital RN), and members of the Bridgeport Fire Department presented a check for $43,000 to Bridgeport Hospital’s Connecticut Burn Center. The money was raised at the 5th annual fundraising dinner held at Vazzano’s Four Seasons in Stratford on March 19, 2016.

Fall River Fire Museum Show On June 26, 2016, the Fall River (MA) Fire Museum held its 8th annual fire truck show on the waterfront in Fall River. Numerous antique and modern fire apparatus were on display on the grounds of the Old Colony/Fall River railroad museum. The event featured a mock extrication demonstration put on by the crews of Heavy Rescue 1 and Engine 2. The Bureau of Fire Prevention also provided tours of their fire SAFE house. The Bristol County Sheriff’s Department put on a K-9 demonstration. A highlight was a raffle of chainsaw artist Michael Higgins ladder truck carved out of a six-foot-long log.

The Connecticut Fire Academy held a graduation/demonstration on July 10, 2016. The CFA has an Introduction to the Fire Service program for juniors, and this year’s marked 20 years since it was started. Juniors come from all over the state and learn basic firefighting and EMS. Bridgeport American Legion Salutes First Responders On June 18, 2016, the Bridgeport (CT) American Legion Baseball League kicked off it’s opening day with a salute to its public servants. Bridgeport’s Seaside Park Diamond 1 hosted this salute to law enforcement, firefighters, first responders, and military personnel.

Haddam Finds a Treasure Trove of Its Past While doing a little spring cleaning in the Officer’s Room at Haddam (CT) Volunteer Fire Company, members discovered a box of old black and white images, dated 1932, of HVFC’s Pirsch engine; the company was founded in 1930. Peter Pirsch and Sons manufactured fire apparatus in Kenosha, Wisconsin, from 1899-1987.

Eighty-four years later, the Pirsch is still owned by HVFC and continues to make appearances at the local parades and other special events.

In one of the black-and-white pictures, taken in 1932, are HVFC members William O’Connor and Steve Nosal.

O’Connor (1894-1948) served as an assistant foreman, second assistant and first assistant chief with HVFC. Nosal (1910-1993) also served as a second assistant and first assistant chief and took Life Membership in 1959.

Pictured on the Pirsch in May 2016 is Assistant Chief Jamie Kuchyt and Chief Sam Baber with fellow members on the back en route to this year’s Memorial Day parade.

Firehouse Kitchen With Firehouse Kitchen Host Ray Cooney

We got FDNY in the house today!

Firefighter Chris Landano and Firefighter Jesus Marcano from Engine 326 in Queens, made it a point to include the name of the truck in their house, Ladder 160.

When you read the name ‘Ladder 160,’ you pronounce it ‘one-sixty.’

Firefighter Marcano was quick to correct me and say, “No, it’s Ladder One, Six, Zero.” This is running joke between the engine and the ladder companies in this house (as any firefighter can attest, this goes on in their firehouses as well).

These firemen were a blast to cook with. It began with calling the meal, ‘Irish Enchiladas,’ in celebration of my heritage, to Firefighter Marcano calling FF Landano by his nickname in the firehouse — Lan-do-nothing. Jokingly, FF Marcano was in awe of all the work Fighterfighter Landano was doing on the show because it was the first time he’d ever really seen him work!

On to the meal. The table looked like a Christmas tree with all the different colors of food. These Irish Enchiladas were accompanied by beans and rice and homemade guacamole. Jesus was the head chef on this meal. He was sure to remind us all that the recipe belonged to his mother-in-law and doing what any good son-in-law would do, he made sure to give her a shout out!

Chris made a comment that Jesus was being a kiss-up. I informed Jesus that I understood his devotion to his mother-in-law. Heck, I had my fatherin-law on three shows! Well, I can’t say that I had to have him on the show. The show received so many compliments on him, that I was afraid I would loose viewers if I didn’t have him back on!

My fire fact on this show was based on something that FF Landano invented.

It is called the Trak Belt 360. This belt allows the firefighter to move the pockets, on the work belt, 360 degrees around your waist.

This is helpful for EMS and firefighters because it allows their tools to be readily available. Being able to slide the pockets around makes climbing ladders safer and is handy in a ‘reduced profile’ situation. You can visit the website for this device at trakbelt360.com.

I enjoyed cooking with these Queens firemen and shared many laughs. These two guys reminded me what I missed most about cooking at the firehouse — the camaraderie and sense of family you feel is unexplainable. I had a pinch of sadness when the day was over.

IRISH CHICKEN ENCHILADAS

Chicken breast Onions Green and red peppers Tomatoes Jalapenos Cheddar cheese Sour cream 1 can crushed tomatoes 1/4 cup of half-and-half cream 1 cup chicken broth Flat, soft tortillas

Using a baking tin, fill with a half-inch of water.

Lay chicken breast in tin and bake at 350 degrees for 30-40 minutes. While the chicken is cooking, prepare the sauce. Combine crushed tomatoes, half-and-half and chicken broth in a saucepan.

Bring to a boil and let simmer for 30 minutes.

Chop onions, peppers, tomatoes and jalapenos.

When the chicken is ready, pull apart with a fork.

Lay pieces of chicken on top of the tortilla shells.

Add beans, rice and all chopped ingredients. Roll the tortilla closed. Layer with sauce and cheddar cheese. Place in baking tin and bake at 350 degrees for 10 minutes.

Sour cream and guacamole can be added to your taste after the tortillas are done baking.

Water Shuttle Drill On July 12, 2016, the East Haddam (CT) Fire Department hosted a tanker shuttle drill at Nathan Hale-Ray Middle School in Moodus.

SHIPMAN’S FIRE EQUIPMENT OPEN HOUSE Shipman’s Fire Equipment Co., Inc., will be hosting their Open House and Customer Appreciation Day on Friday, September 23, 2016.

Terry Farrell FireFighters Fund “Surplus Equipment Program” has assisted fire departments throughout upper New York State with much needed turnout gear, hoses, tools and even several vehicles. All of this is possible through the generous support of Long Island Fire Departments.

We now need the help of volunteers to assist us with • Equipment deliveries • Drive our vehicles in parades • Man our booths at Fire Dept. tournaments, festivals & functions • Assist with the collection of gear from donating department No one is paid in our organization but the feeling of helping firefighters who receive our donations and assistance and the gratitude they show to us is payment enough.
