Are We Forgetting?

Recently, I asked one of my friends what he remembered about Pearl Harbor. He looked at me like I was nuts! Two other members thought for a minute and figured out that I was gathering information for my September editorial. As for Pearl Harbor, we all agreed that if it wasn't for movies, documentaries and conversations with our fathers and mothers, we would know little about the first-hand experience of WW II. I grew up during the era of the Vietnam War. I can tell you about the protests that happened in 1969 and I can tell you about the saddened feeling my family felt when our neighbor was informed her son was killed in battle. But, I cannot tell you anything about the first-hand experiences about the war because I was too young at the time.

I am reflecting about our important history of the past because I woke up last night realizing that another anniversary of September 11 is not far away. Reflecting on 9/11, I can remember where I was and what I was doing. I was teaching a group of eighth grade students. Many of my students had parents who worked in the financial district of Manhattan and quite a few had fathers who were members of the FDNY. All of the teachers in my school went into an emergency

mode to keep our students calm. Yes, there were tears, questions with no answers and serious apprehension of what would be in store for us as the day progressed. I made it through the day and rushed home to my firehouse.

When I walked into my station, the silence in the TV room was unnerving. My company was organized into crews, ready to deploy into Manhattan if needed. Our ladder crew was activated to stage in Queens. The next day our rescue truck responded to the Financial District to provide lighting for the residents of Manhattan. I am telling you this for a reason and it is really not about what the Terryville Fire Department did during the attack on the World Trade Center.

The other day, I watched a bunch of young energetic responders return from a call. I looked at their faces and saw smiles and heard the members kidding with one another about a plethora of topics. Only a first responder knows the complicated feelings we experience after a call. Talking, kidding around and sitting down for a few minutes with the crew is what helps us bring closure to the call. Looking at the crew, most of them were infants when the World Trade Center was attacked. They have no memories

of that fateful day. What they know about the attack on our country is what they have heard from parents, learned in school, or watched on television. As responders, do they really know what occurred?

As time marches on, the first-hand experiences of the past become distant memories.

In some cases, this may be a good thing.

However, as we continue to lose responders that operated at the World Trade Center, we must insure everyone never forgets. On September 11, 2018, take the time to share stories, comfort a friend who lost loved ones and sit with those who have been taken ill with cancer from 9/11. Remember, we never forget our own! ‌‌Dennis

As we remember September 11, 2001, never forget how our lives were changed on that horrible day. Take the time to say a prayer to remember those who were lost, the families that were broken and the lives that continue to be lost as a result of the terrorist attack on our country.

Waterbury Mill Building Blaze

On the evening of July 31, 2018, Waterbury (CT) firefighters were dispatched to the area of Bank Street for multiple calls reporting a structure fire. Crews arrived on scene to find the old Anaconda American Brass Mill buildings well involved. The vacant threestory mill building posed some real challenges for firefighters even being fought from a defensive position. The back section of the mill was connected to another building being used to store chemicals

and equipment for an energy plant. Crews quickly shut down a 12inch gas main that fed the energy plant. A cause for the fire has not been determined but investigators were leaning toward arson.

Smoke from the fire was even picked up on Doppler radar by the news stations.

Hot 3-Alarmer in Saugus

On July 10, 2018, Saugus (MA) Fire struck a box for a house fire on Juniper Lane. Companies arrived to heavy smoke and fire showing, and a second alarm was struck; a third alarm was transmitted a few minutes later. Weather was hot and humid, and the fire’s location was atop a hill, creating water pressure problems. Pumps had to

drop several hundred feet of feeder up the hill and engines had to pump the HAVs at the bottom of the hill to attempt to increase water pressure at the fire building. The fire was knocked down in about an hour.

Northborough 4-Alarmer The Northborough (MA) Fire Department was dispatched to West Main Street for a structure fire on June 2, 2018. Engine 2 arrived to heavy fire showing from an abandoned two-story wood frame building. A second alarm was quickly requested.

Companies immediately went defensive to protect an adjacent business and a gas station. A third alarm was struck for mutual aid. Crews remained in a defensive mode until the majority of the fire was knocked down. A fourth alarm was eventually requested bringing in Berlin, Hopkinton, Hudson, Marlboro, Milford, Shrewsbury, Southboro, Westboro and West Boylston; Ashland and Grafton provided station coverage. Patriot Ambulance and Worcester EMS were on scene as well as Rehab 7 from the Department of Fire Services.

Middletown Blaze Takes Off Firefighters in Middletown (CT) responded to a two-alarm fire on Rappallo Avenue on May 27, 2018.

Just before midnight, crews arrived to fire showing from a three-story wood frame. Members went defensive after the fire took off in the attic space.

Worcester 3-Alarmer Webster Square’s (MA) Engine 5 and Ladder 4 arrived to fire showing on the top floor of an occupied apartment building on Main Street.

There was minor extension into the cockloft, but the fire was held in check by aggressive interior operations and rapid roof ventilation.

Several firefighters were treated for minor injuries received in the three-alarm fire.

Heavy Fire in Blue Hills

Blue Hills (CT) firefighters battled heavy fire conditions in a residential dwelling on the morning of July 12, 2018, when they responded to what came in as a fire alarm activation. Crews from Bloomfield Center, Windsor and Simsbury provided mutual aid to help bring the fire under control.

Apartment Building Blaze in Brockton

On July 8, 2018, the Brockton (MA) Fire Department responded to a large outside fire against a building on Grafton Street. Engine-5 and Car 56 reported heavy smoke in the distance, prior to arrival.

Companies arrived to smoke showing from a 2-1/2 story wood framed dwelling. Fire Alarm dispatched a medic unit due to a report of a person having difficulty breathing. Total Loss in Stratford

Stratford (CT) firefighters were called to Soundsphere on Research Drive on July 9, 2018, for a commercial building fire.

Units found a single-story, fire-resistant building fully involved.

Companies went to work defensively with master streams.

Multiple collapses occurred throughout the building. The fire was brought under control in 90 minutes. An employee of the company stated he had mixed chemicals for the day’s job order, left the area and was alerted by a passing ambulance crew of fire through the roof. No other employees were in the building, which was a total loss.

Winsted 2-Alarm

On June 30, 2018, the Winsted (CT) Fire Department was dispatched to Torringford Street in Winsted for a structure fire. Units arrived at a 2-1/2 story wood frame with fire through the roof. It was very quickly brought up to a second alarm due to the intense heat and steep driveway. Mutual aid was requested to the scene and for station coverage. Units operated on scene for approximately four hours.

Well Involved in Stratford

Just after midnight on May 29, 2018, Stratford (CT) firefighters were dispatched to Canaan Road for a house fire. Firefighters arrived to heavy fire in the back of the home from the first floor, extending to the attic. Crews made an aggressive interior attack but heavy fire conditions forced firefighters to go defensive. Once the heavy fire was knocked down crews re-entered but were forced out again by the quickly advancing fire. Crews went defensive and put a ladder pipe and a deck gun to work along with big lines; mutual aid was called. It took almost 2-1/2 hours to bring the fire under control.

Total Loss in Johnston

Taftville House Fire

On June 28, 2018, Johnston (RI) firefighters responded to Green Hill Avenue for a building fire. On arrival, Engine 1 found heavy fire showing from a single-story, metal clad commercial building. A second alarm was immediately struck, bringing all remaining Johnston apparatus. As crews began to stretch lines, they began to experience problems with low water pressure. Three engines from Cranston responded to the scene and laid five-inch supply lines. This improved the water problems but the building was fully involved and was a total loss. No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire was under investigation.

The Taftville (CT) Fire Department battled high heat and humidity at a recent house fire in the District of Norwich. Mutual aid was requested from the Yantic, Occum and the City of Norwich. The house was left uninhabitable and was investigated by the Norwich Fire Marshall’s Office.

4-Alarmer in Medford

On June 27, 2018, Medford (MA) firefighters spent nearly all day fighting a three-alarm fire in a single-story building on Mystic Avenue. Firefighters arrived to smoke showing from a building.

Second, third and fourth alarms were struck, bringing mutual aid from Somerville, Malden, Everett, Chelsea, Arlington and Cambridge, plus other mutual aid from area departments to cover.

The building contained a large amount of cleaning solvents.

Firefighters battled flames from the ground and the top of nearby buildings, successfully containing the flames to one building. The building burned for over three hours, blanketing the entire area with thick black smoke. One Medford firefighter was taken to the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

Car into House ‌ and Then Some

On June 26, 2018, Worcester firefighters were called to Cambridge into the walls of the balloon frame house and quickly started to vent Street for a strange incident. Engine 5 arrived to find an automobile through the roof.

New Haven 2-Alarmer Early in the afternoon of July 4, 2018, the New Haven (CT) Fire Department was dispatched to a boarded-up home on the corner of Dwight and George Streets for a structure fire. Units arrived to find heavy fire in the rear of the vacant 2-1/2 story brick building. Shortly after, a second alarm was called for manpower due to temps hovering around 90 degrees and high humidity.

Tanker Truck Fire on I-90 On April 11, 2018, fire crews from Hopkington and Westborough (MA) responded to a tanker truck fire, which prompted the closing of I-90 westbound just beyond the I-495 interchange. Crews arrived to find the cab of the loaded tanker fully involved. The fire caused multiple small explosions from various engine parts and the truck’s tires. Once firefighters arrived, they went into deck gun operations to knock down the fire. Thankfully the tank contents, 10,000 gallons of liquid oxygen, were not affected.

Bozrah Barn Fire On June 28, 2018, Bozrah (CT) Fire and Colchester Ladder 128 was dispatched to Bashon Hill Road, for a barn fire. Firefighters arrived to a fire, in a 20- x 30-foot hay barn about 500 feet off the road. Command requested tankers, Yantic and Tribal FAST. The barn collapsed about 15 minutes after arrival and a long overhaul of bales began.

Pawtucket House Fire Stopped

Multiple calls rang into the Pawtucket (RI) FAO reporting a dwelling fire on York Street on July 8, 2018. Engine 1 arrived to find heavy fire showing from the Charlie side of a 1-1/2 story Cape Cod’s breezeway attached to a garage. Several handlines were used to quickly knock down the fire. There was some extension to the dwelling.

Salvage Yard Truck Fire

Andover (MA) Engine 1, Ladder 1 and the deputy chief were dispatched on May 21, 2018, to a truck fire in the salvage lot of Elm Street Auto on Lupine Road. Companies arrived to find the engine compartment fully involved with exposure to another vehicle. A single line was run off Engine 1 and the fire was quickly knocked down.

Simsbury Barn Fire

The Simsbury (CT) Volunteer Fire Company responded for a barn fire and arrived to heavy fire showing. The barn was built in the 1800s and was next to an historic house built in the 1700s. During the barn fire, Simsbury also responded to a fire alarm at a school dorm.

Total Loss in Grafton

A Grafton (MA) husband and wife were safely evacuated from their burning home by an aware AAA driver. The driver was passing the residence and saw the smoke and fire. He pulled over and began to search for occupants. The 1-1/2 story dwelling along with its garage was a total loss.

A fourth alarm was struck to bring this fire under control.

Vacant West Warwick Home Destroyed

Vacant House Burns in Willington

On the evening of June 26, 2018, the West Warwick (RI) Fire Department responded to Providence Street for a house fire. On arrival, Engine 3 had heavy fire showing from a vacant house.

Crews stretched in and began attacking the fire but it quickly spread throughout the house and command ordered all companies out. Tower Ladder 1 went into operation with its master stream and, along with several outside lines, knocked the heavy fire down.

On May 19, 2018, the Willington (CT) Fire Department responded for fire in a vacant house,which sat off the road with limited access, in the area of River Road. Units arrived to heavy fire. Mutual aid came from four area departments.

Rockland 2-Alarmer

Just after 0300 hours on the morning of July 23, 2018, the Rockland Fire Department responded to a reported building fire on Plain Street at Kelliher Brothers Oil Company. Companies arrived to find heavy fire showing from the single-story commercial building, with live wires down in the street. A second alarm was immediately requested. Crews were able to knock down the heavy fire conditions within 15-minutes. The Pembroke Ambulance transported a firefighter who suffered a medical emergency on-scene. He was treated and released from a local hospital.

Rocky Hill and Wethersfield (CT) Fire Departments responded to a dryer fire on Charter Road in Rocky Hill near the town line on July 12, 2018.

2 FFs Injured at Everett 3-Alarmer

Two firefighters sustained injuries — one with third-degree burns — at a three-alarm fire on Morris Street in Everett (MA) on July 13, 2018.

Cat Rescued at Ayer 5-Alarm The Ayer (MA) Fire Department was dispatched to East Main Street for a structure fire on June 17, 2018. C1 arrived to heavy fire showing from the D side, extending into the attic of a 2-1/2 story wood frame, and requested a second alarm. Companies stretched multiple handlines to an adjacent roof top of the D side to hit the fire on the upper floors. A third alarm was struck and command requested the railroad tracks be shut down on the C side so crews could set up a Blitz gun in the rear. Ayer Captain Johnston ascended L1 to rescue a cat spotted on the roof. A fourth alarm, and eventually a fifth, was requested bringing multiple surrounding towns to the scene to assist with extinguishment and overhaul.

Quick Stop in Smithfield

Smithfield (RI) Fire dispatched a full assignment to Homestead Avenue on June 24, 2018, for a reported shed fire with exposure problems. Engine 2 arrived to find a well-involved 12- x 12-foot wooden shed that was set back on the property. Crews used an attack line to bring the fire under control in about five minutes.

Correction

Two Alarms in Stamford

Stamford (CT) firefighters were dispatched to the Edgehill retirement home on Palmers Hill Road on March 15, 2018, for a report of smoke and flames visible from one of the buildings.

First arriving crews found fire on a second-floor balcony of the building. A line was quickly stretched and the fire was knocked down and did not extend beyond a small spot on the porch. A second alarm was called as a precaution due to the type of the building.

On July 10, 2018, the East Bridgewater (MA) Fire Department responded to an MVA in the area of Plymouth Street. Companies arrived to find a 10-wheeled dump truck on its side, and a small pickup with heavy damage. The occupant of the dump truck was able to self-extricate, but the operator of the pickup was pinned.

Serious E. Bridgewater Crash

Mutual aid and Boston MedFlight were requested. A Bridgewater engine assisted in extrication, while a Whitman engine secured the LZ. The extricated victim was flown to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston and two children in the pickup were transported to the South Shore Hospital.

3 Injured in Higganum MVA One patient was air-lifted, and three more were transported to hospitals following an MVA in Higganum (CT) on July 15, 2018.

A driver, heading north on Killingworth Road, lost control, slid sideways into the southbound lane and was struck by a vehicle heading south. Both vehicles had one driver and one passenger.

Haddam Volunteer Fire Company stabilized both vehicles with cribbing and extricated the unconscious driver of one vehicle, who was transported to an LZ at Burr Elementary School via Haddam Ambulance, and airlifted to Hartford Hospital by Life Star helicopter. Firefighters used hydraulic tools to cut open the front and rear passenger doors, and eventually extricated the vehicle’s passenger. That patient was transported to Hartford Hospital by

Hunters Ambulance. The driver of the other vehicle was extricated and also transported to Hartford Hospital via Hunters Ambulance.

The passenger of that vehicle was transported to Saint Francis Hospital via Chester Hose Company Ambulance with injuries.

Right Place, Right Time in Leicester On May 30, 2018, a motorcyclist came in contact with a passenger vehicle on Main Street at Curtis Parkway. A passing Leicester (MA) Ambulance stopped to render medical aid prior to Worcester Fire arriving.

Shelton MVA On May 25, 2018, the Shelton (CT) Fire Department was dispatched to Weybosset Street for an MVA rollover with entrapment. Once on scene, members found that the passengers had self-extricated.

Franklin Nitrogen Leak in Rollover

Franklin Fire was dispatched to Route 32 and New Park on July 6, 2018, for a nitrogen tanker that was being towed (after a it caught fire in Clinton) and rolled over. It was decided by CTDEEP to let the gas bleed off. Once the gas got to a safe level, the tanker was lifted and placed on a flatbed trailer. The road was closed for several hours.

6 Injured in Wolcott MVA On July 7, 2018, the Wolcott (CT) Fire, Police and EMS responded to Todd Road for a report of a car versus tree with multiple victims injured and an entrapment. Engine 4 extricated one victim and EMS transported two adults in serious condition and three children, who were not wearing seatbelts, with minor injuries. The road remained closed for seven hours while police investigated.

Whitman and Hanson Work Town Line Crash On July 3, 2018, the Whitman (MA) Fire Department received a call reporting a two-car MVA with both vehicles into the woods on Franklin Street (Route 27) at the Hanson town line. Both departments responded with an ambulance and engine. Companies arrived to find the occupant of one vehicle ambulatory, while the other was stuck in the vehicle. EF-1 Tornado Rips Through Dudley and Webster Members of the Dudley and Webster (MA) Fire Departments responded to numerous calls for service in the wake of an EF-1 tornado (80 to 110 mph winds) that ripped through the towns on the morning of August 4, 2018. The first twister touched down in the area of Central Avenue and Cross Street. A number of trees were uprooted, several landing on houses and vehicles, and several large trees limbs wreaked havoc on many overhead lines in the area. The twister grew stronger as it crossed the French River and entered the Town of Webster. Lower Main Street was hit with greater-than-100mph winds, and tore into three taxpayers on one side of the street, tearing off the roof of one and severely damaging the others. Across the street, winds blew in air conditioners and windows of a threestory concrete apartment building. Salem Responds Twice

Tippy Canoe in Lincoln Lincoln (RI) Stations 3 and 5, and Rescue 1 responded to the Lincoln Woods State Beach boat ramp on June 16, 2018, for a reported overturned canoe with three people in distress. Stamford Tanker Shuttle Drill Firefighters from Fairfield County (CT) and Westchester County (NY) gathered in Stamford (CT) on June 10, 2018, for a large-scale tanker drill. The drill which took place at the Stamford Reservoir had companies drafting water to load tankers and then shuttling it down the road to the dump site of three portable tanker pools.

Crews ran through two sequences of the drill.

Stamford, New Canaan, Long Ridge, Turn of River, Springdale, Glenbrook, West Redding, Cos Cob, Stevenson, Banksville, Vista, and Croton-on-Hudson all participated in this drill.

Chief Jillson Retires After 46-Year Career

Lone Ridge, Turn of River and Belltown Celebrate 90th Anniversary

On June 8, 2018, members from the Long Ridge Fire Company, Turn of River Fire Department, and the Belltown Fire Department gathered in Stamford (CT) to celebrate 90 years of service.

Members posed for photos in front of antique equipment from Long Ridge and Turn of River, shared memories and stories while being

treated to a buffet dinner and were treated to a special performance by the Fairfield County Police Pipes and Drums. Toward the end of the night a giant celebratory cake was brought out and the first cut was done by a woman whose family founded the Turn of River Fire Department.

Fire and Police Graduate Advanced Fire Investigation Course State Fire Marshal Peter J. Ostroskey and Massachusetts Firefighting Academy Director David C. Evans announced that 24 public safety officials completed the Academy’s six-day Advanced Fire Investigation course on May 27, 2018. This rigorous professional training provides public safety professionals with the advanced skills to accurately determine the origin and cause of fires in their jurisdictions and together, build solid, prosecutable cases.

The graduates came from the following agencies: Amherst FD and PD, Boston FD, Boxford FD, Cambridge FD, Cambridge PD, Department of Fire Services, Everett FD, Gardner FD, Gardner PD, Haverhill FD, Hudson PD, Lawrence FD, Marlborough FD, Massachusetts State Police, Methuen FD, Northampton FD, Northampton PD, Saugus FD, Somerville PD, Springfield PD, Stoneham FD, Waltham FD and the Weymouth FD. The six-day advanced fire investigation course covers the concepts of fire behavior, scene examination, fire scene documentation, evidence collection, witness interviewing, and management of major fire investigations in more depth than the basic fire investigation class. It also addresses the legal issues of managing fire scenes, evidence collection, and concludes with practical exercises of interviewing witnesses and participating in the courtroom process.

Students research and present case briefs on landmark fire investigation cases and scholarly publications. They work with assistant district attorneys to prepare their legal cases and participate in a mock trial. The program covers unintentional fires, intentionally set fires, and fatal fires.

New Haven’s DC William Gould Retires A large group of firefighters, both active and retired, attended a traditional Last Shift party that was held on June 9, 2018, to honor Deputy Chief William Gould retired after completing 31 years of service with the New Haven (CT) Fire Department.

The event was held at the Central Station on Grand Avenue, and officially marked the end of Gould’s distinguished firefighting career. Referring to Gould, New Haven Fire Chief John Alston, who recently took over the department after serving with the Jersey City Fire Department, said, “He was one of one of the greatest chief officers that I have had the privilege to serve with.”

The retiring Deputy Chief, who played a part in Alston’s orientation, was well known as a brilliant field commander.

Stamford Wetdown and Push Back On July 2, 2018, the Stamford (CT) Fire Department officially put their brand new Rescue 1 into service. Members of Rescue 1 and Engine 5 participated in a small wetdown and push back ceremony for the Pierce Enforcer. The Stamford Fire Department Mechanical Division put an incredible amount of time and effort into this apparatus, making it the most personalized rig Stamford has had. The vehicle won best in show for apparatus at the Beacon Hose Firefighters Parade and was the main showcase for Pierce at the New England Chiefs Show.

On July 26, 1918, Engine 50 was organized by the Boston Fire Department in the Charlestown District of Boston.

A celebration took place on July 26, 2018, at the base of the Bunker Hill Monument. Engine 50’s firehouse is undergoing a complete renovation. Boston Fire Commissioner Joseph Finn addressed the gathering, and the hand-drawn Washington Engine Company which served the Charlestown community for over 100 years was brought to the ceremony.

Dudley Breaks Ground Braintree for a New Station Dedicates New Fireboat

On July 11, 2018, the Town of Dudley (MA) finally broke ground for a new fire station. Dudley Fire Chief Dean Kochanowski invited members of the fire station building committee, the Board of Selectmen, the architect and the general contractor to join him in a ceremonial groundbreaking on the future site. The new station is being built on the site of the old West Main Street Station, which was erected in 1960. The new station will approximately double the size of the current firehouse, and will reuse a portion of the existing building, although it will be completely renovated. The project is expected to take 14 to 18 months to complete.

The Braintree (MA) Fire Department placed a new fireboat in service and dedicated the boat to the memory of former Braintree Firefighter and later Boston Firefighter Chester ‘Chet’ Daiute, who died of cancer 17 years ago. The boat was dedicated on July 11, 2018, and is 34-feet long, built by Munson and equipped with a 1500-gpm pump. Boston firefighters, mostly from Engine 18 and Ladder 6 who worked with Chet, and Braintree firefighters attended the ceremony along with Chet’s widow, Barbara.
