From the Editor’s Desk Dennis Whittam, Editor

We Made It! As I gave thought to this editorial, I realized that it is for the December Fire News. Wow, December; can you imagine that 2020 is about to end? Covid-19 has certainly made our lives as first responders difficult. Despite having to change the way we exist at the firehouse, we’ve had to rethink how we handled routine events and calls, while major calls also challenged our chiefs. The fire was never the problem. The problem was reminding members that distancing themselves from one another before, during and after the call was a new requirement. I can’t tell you how many times I walked up to the fireground and forgot my face mask. Thanks to our EMS responders who always politely reminded me to wear my mask as they handed me a new one so I could be protected from Covid-19. As 2020 continued and the number of Covid cases dropped, many of us started to let our guard down. Occasionally, we found out the hard way that this horrible disease is still alive and threatens us. I know of several incidents where members received calls from their chiefs notifying them they were

exposed. It may have happened when a member was exposed to the disease at another location and now responded on a call without wearing a facemask. The result of this mistake ended up with members having to be tested and/or quarantined. Please, remember to wear a face mask when you are in close proximity to people all of the time! In many departments, 2021 elections have been held. If your company has new officers, please give them the support that they need to continue keeping you safe. It is also a good time for new officers to sit down with senior members and officers ending their term to discuss the things that can or cannot be done to keep your company running smoothly. Speaking from experience, I always appreciated the advice I received from experienced members. I always learned something important when I took the time to sit with them over coffee and asked for input. I always love to share my favorite drills which challenged members and I love to share the problems I had as a new officer. To the new officers, take the time to share ideas with the people who

probably made the same mistakes you could make on your very first day in office. In closing, I would like to wish everyone a blessed and happy holiday. Remember the people of your community who are less fortunate. Most likely you are not going to be opening your firehouse to your community as a result of Covid-19 prevention. Even though your doors for socialization will probably be closed, you can still let the community know you are there for them. A simple wave of the hand lets everyone know that they are in your thoughts and prayers during this holiday season. Merry Christmas and happy holidays to all! -Dennis

Bargaintown House Fire

The volunteer fire companies of Bargaintown and Scullville responded to Churchill Drive at 2213 on November 5, 2020, for a structure fire. Bargaintown Assistant Chief Wil Hancock reported heavy fire showing from the garage of a two-story, wood frame, single-family dwelling. The call automatically triggered a RIT response from the City of Somers Point. Bargaintown Chief Eugene Sharpe arrived and established command and requested engines from Cardiff and Farmington.

Engine 1527 stretched an LDH and had Scullville Ladder 1535 set up out front and begin hitting the fire. Crews used multiple handlines to attack the fire, which was extending into the dwelling. The fire was brought under control in about an hour. Also responding were the City of Linwood (covered Bargaintown), EHT Ambulance, EHT Police, EHT Fire Police, Bargaintown and Scullville Ladies Auxiliaries. - Fire News photo by Dennis C. Sharpe

Paterson 4-Alarmer

On the afternoon of August 3, 2020, Paterson Fire Dispatch transmitted a box for a building fire on Cianci Street. Crews arrived to heavy fire on the second and third floors of the three-story frame, mixed-use building which was attached on both sides. Searches were quickly conducted under severe conditions as firefighters stretched lines to stop the fire’s spread. With the fire spreading into both the Bravo and Delta exposures, a second alarm was transmitted, quickly followed by the third and, as conditions deteriorated, all members were withdrawn from the building. Four ladder pipes, two deck guns and multiple exterior handlines were pressed into service to extinguish the fire. A fourth alarm was requested bringing mutual aid to the scene. The fire took a couple of hours to be placed under control and crews remained on the scene into the night. - Fire News photos by Peter Danzo

Secaucus Kitchen Fire Extends

On October 8, 2020, the Secaucus Fire Department was dispatched to Paterson Plank Road for a fire in the kitchen of Noches De Columbia restaurant. Crews arrived to a smoke condition in the kitchen area along with high heat in the structure. Upon further investigation, smoke was found in the walls on the C side of the structure. As a result of the extension from the kitchen, the assignment was upgraded to a second alarm. A third alarm quickly fol-

lowed as heavy smoke began to show from the rear of the building while crews continued the interior attack. Mutual aid came from Rutherford, East Rutherford, Lyndhurst and Jersey City. Three lines were stretched as the fire was marked knocked down approximately an hour after arrival. One firefighter was treated on scene for minor injuries. - Fire News photos by Mark Rosetti

Total Loss in Flanders

Just after 2100 on October 22, 2020, the Flanders Fire Department was drilling when a homeowner from three houses down pulled into the station and reported his house was on fire. Crews radioed the dispatcher and reported a working house fire and called a second alarm, bringing Budd Lake, Roxbury, Chester and Netcong. Cars 90 and 91 arrived to a 2-1/2 story wood frame with fire showing from the first and second floors. Engine 95 and Tower 96 started an interior attack but were forced out due to heavy fire and hoarding conditions in the home. Budd Lake’s chiefs and Engines

59 and 53 arrived and took the rear and established a second water source as two ground monitors and a tower ladder went into service. The fire was darkened down within a half-hour but, due to a collapse of the second floor and delta side, a excavator was called in for demolition. There were no injuries but the late 1800s house was a total loss. All crews were released around 0300. The fire was under investigation by the Mount Olive Fire Marshal’s Office and the Mount Olive Police. - Fire News photos by Kevin Maloney, AC Budd Lake FC 1
