What Are You Thinking About?

Recently, as I was responding to an automatic alarm as a member of the crew on my engine, a few thoughts went through my head.

I looked at the member that was sitting with me and wondered what the young probie was thinking about. For me, I did what I have done for the past 25 years; I monitored the conversation between my officer and the chief who was already on scene. Moments later, before we arrived on scene, we were turned around and headed home.

I took the next few minutes to ask the probie sitting next to me a question. The conversation started like this. "Ah, an easy call, but let me ask you, what were you thinking about when you got on the truck?" He looked at me and said," What do you mean?" Oh well, here I go playing "father firefighter." I lectured the poor kid for the entire ride home. I didn't stop "teaching" after the truck was back in the truck bay. We sat down in the kitchen and had a great conversation on what all members should do

from the moment they hear a call come over the pager.

Most of you who are reading this realize what I was doing. You probably did what I did yourself. I wanted the young firefighter to understand that size-up starts the moment the call comes over the pager. Do you think differently when you hear a call go out with the words "across from?" As you pull into the parking lot, are you noticing how many cars are in the lot? When you enter the firehouse are you immediately gearing up or are you standing around waiting for more members to show up? How about checking the location of the call and looking on the map for the hydrants?

When you get on the road, are you listening to the conversations that are going on inside of the truck? Who is doing what, when you get to the scene? We have learned that size-up starts the minute you hear the dispatcher put the call over the air.

or may not have appreciated what I was doing.

Regardless, it is up to all experienced members to guide new members so they are prepared to go into action when they arrive on scene. No matter what the call is, no one should be getting off the truck without knowing exactly what to expect. The simple automatic alarm is a teaching opportunity. Finding alarm panels and resetting them is a valuable lesson for everyone on the truck. In the fire service, you learn the basic techniques of your trade and you learn what to do at various incidents in fire school. However, a lot of what you learn comes from the experience you received on prior calls. The pockets of your coat are probably filled with small tools that have become indispensable because experience has showed you that you needed them.

To all new members; learn from every call.

To all experienced members; take the time to share your experiences so that everyone goes home safely.

ATLANTIC HIGHLANDS SAFETY SQUAD ADDS DIGITAL OPTION TO FUND DRIVE The Atlantic Highlands First Aid & Safety Squad’s annual fund drive is underway and for the first time ever residents have an option to donate online. Using a “donate” button on the Squad's web site — www.ahfirstaid.org — residents can save themselves the cost of a stamp and quickly make a tax-deductible donation.

The all-volunteer emergency services organization relies on generous donations from residents and the borough to operate. Nearly half of the AHFAS annual operating budget is derived from the annual fund drive letter.

Hillsborough House Fire

On April 5, 2017, Hillsborough Township fire companies were dispatched to the area of Campbell Road for a smoke column in the area. Dispatch quickly re-dispatched companies to Campbell Road for a structure fire. First arriving units from Hillsborough and Manville encountered heavy fire coming from the roof and B side of

structure, and companies went defensive to get a handle on the fire.

Additional mutual aid companies arrived, helping crews to get a quick knock down on the fire using multiple ground monitors and aerial operations. Hillsborough Fire Marshal’s Office was investigating the cause.

Runnemede All-Hands

On March 9, 2017, a dwelling fire was reported on East 3rd Avenue in Runnemede. Arriving units reported heavy fire conditions from a single-family wood frame dwelling. Command struck an all hands. Crews secured a water supply and led off with handline and found heavy fire. A back up line was stretched and placed in operation. Crews opened up from the exterior as command struck an emergency evacuation order for heavy fire conditions throughout the dwelling. Crews placed a handline in operation from the rear to knock down the bulk of the fire, then re-entered the dwelling to hit hot spots and open up.

Pemberton Garage Fire ‌With a Bang

Early on March 22, 2017, the Pemberton Township Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched for a report of a garage fire on Pepper Road in the Browns Mills section.

Firefighters were met with a heavily involved garage. The owner reported acetylene tanks in the structure. As other units arrived the acetylene tanks ruptured accelerating the fire. There were several propane tanks in the garage but they were not involved. Mutual aid came from Goodwill, Joint Base McGuire, Dix, Lakehurst, Cookstown, Plumstead and Hampton Lakes Air Service Unit. Virtua, Pemberton EMS and Tabernacle Rescue Squad Rehab provided medical coverage. Departments from Vincentown, Tabernacle, North Hanover and Whittings provided coverage. One firefighter was transported to the hospital but was treated and released. The building was a total loss.

Wallington Commercial Fire

On March 4, 2017, an East Rutherford chief radioed the Wallington truck in the rear. Companies were able to contain the fire within the Fire Department that there was a fire on the city’s border. By the relatively small structure with the assistance of East Rutherford time Wallington units arrived, the rear of a former liquor store was Engine 3, Carlstadt Engine 202 and Rutherford Rescue 5.

Medford Township Taskforce 25 was alerted to a report of smoke garage and struck an all hands. Cold, Wind and Fire

On the evening of March 22, 2017, with temperatures in the teens the fire to both exposures and a second alarm was struck. The fire and very high winds, the Newark Fire Department responded to was one of three multi-alarms within four days.

Medford Twp. 2-Alarmer

On March 25, 2017, Station 252 was dispatched for a reported BBQ gas grill on fire in the Taunton Trace Development. Just after, dispatch Central Communications upgraded the call and struck the tone for Taskforce 2524. Central advised the units that a second caller was reporting that the deck and rear of the home were on fire.

Chief 3700 reported a visible column of smoke to Deputy Chief Webb, who arrived to find a two-story, middle-of-the-row dwelling with smoke and fire showing from the Charlie side with extension into the Delta exposure. He called a second alarm.

Good Saves at Vineland Hotel Blaze

Early on February 24, 2017, the City of Vineland Fire Department responded to the Ramada Inn on West Landis Avenue for an alarm.

Engine 61 and Tower 6 responded and discovered a fire in the rear section of the hotel with police on location evacuating guests.

Vineland Engines 11, 31, and 42, Ladder 2, and Rosenhayn Engine 2901, and Vineland EMS also responded. The hotel was an Lshaped structure with no sprinkler system and interior wood frame construction. A window blew out allowing the fire to extend into a soffit. Two Vineland firefighters raised a ground ladder and rescued two occupants from a window. Vineland Ladder 2, set up to ventilate the roof but the fire had too much control of the attic, so fire-

fighters evacuated the roof and the interior. Vineland City Chief Robert Pagnini arrived and requested a second alarm, bringing in the remainder of the City of Vineland firefighters, along with firefighters from Port Norris, Gouldtown, City of Millville EMS, Cumberland, Heislerville, Hopewell-Stow Creek, Mauricetown, Forest Grove, and Malaga, the Cumberland County Fire Coordinator and the Red Cross. One occupant of the hotel was transported to Inspira Hospital in Vineland with burns and one police officer was treated for smoke inhalation. The fire damaged 28 units of the hotel.

Somers Point Kitchen Fire

The City of Somers Point Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched on March 16, 2017, for a fire on Jefferson Avenue. Deputy Chief Somers established command and reported a fire in the laundry room of a single-family, single-story, wood frame house with extension into the kitchen. Command requested mutual aid from Ocean City, the City of Linwood and the City of Northfield. The fire was venting out a door and two kitchen windows on the bravo side.

Crews stretched into the front door and made quick work of the fire. Marmora covered Somers Point and Cardiff covered the City of Linwood. The New Jersey State Fire Marshall was called to investigate. The Somers Point Ladies Auxiliary responded with refreshments. Also responding were Somers Point OEM, Somers Point EMS, Somers Point Police, Atlantic City Electric Company, and the South Jersey Gas Company.

Montclair Handles LZ

On January 16, 2017, the Montclair Fire Department dispatched Engine 1 and 2, and Truck 1 to Kaveny in Montclair to set up an LZ for Hackensack University Medical Center AirMed 1. Clifton House Fire

On January 20, 2017, the Clifton Fire Department responded to Van Houten Avenue for a structure fire. Unit 8-2 arrived on scene in minutes with Station 6 being just two blocks away and confirmed fire showing from the C side. Engine 6 established a water supply and made an aggressive interior attack to contain the fire to its room of origin as a second alarm was struck to bring additional manpower to the scene. A Nutley truck company responded as the RIT and surrounding towns provided house coverage. The fire was brought under control within 30 minutes.

Cologne Condo Fire The volunteer fire companies of Cologne, Laureldale, and Mays responded to Arbor Court in the Woodlands Condominium Complex on Route 322 for a report of smoke. Laureldale Chief Chris Tilley arrived and established command and reported heavy smoke showing. . Firefighters entered and were met with fire dropping down from the ceiling.

Firefighters began opening up from the exterior and found the fire was between the ceiling and the second floor. The second floor was completely burned out. Firefighters continued opening up as the fire burned along the entire front of the A side. Once everything was opened up, the fire was quickly extinguished.

Good Stop in Mt. Ephraim

On February 1, 2017, a dwelling fire was reported on Northmont Avenue in Mt. Ephraim.

Crews arrived and reported an attached garage with heavy fire conditions. Crews stretched a handline and held the fire to the garage as a truck company opened the roof.

Not Good: Wind And Fire Working Together

On March 17, 2017, the City of Avalon Volunteer Fire Department and surrounding communities responded to Sea Gull Road for a structure fire. Firefighters arrived to find heavy fire showing from a two-story, wood frame, single-family dwelling with a larger home on the D side exposed. Firefighters hit the fire with heavy lines and

Avalon firefighters set up their mid-mount platform on the A side to attempt to make a stop on the fire from involving the B exposure as the wind was pushing the fire in that direction. The fire took several hours to bring under control and the cause was under investigation.

On Fire in Totowa On February 10, 2016, the Totowa Fire Department responded to a car fire on Route 46 eastbound in the lot of Bob’s Furniture. Engine 973 and Truck 1 responded to find an engine compartment well involved. The driver stated he saw flames in his rear view mirror as he was driving.

Door Pop at 2-Car MVA On March 3, 2017, the volunteer fire companies of Bargaintown and Scullville along with Egg Harbor Township Ambulance and Police were dispatched to the intersection of Ocean Heights Avenue and Steelmanville Road for a report of a two-car MVA with entrapment. Scullville Chief Steven Prisament arrived and established command. Scullville Rescue 1537 did a door pop and then packaged and transported the person by EHT Ambulance to Shore Medical Center in Somers Point.

MVA’s Around the State

Pickup Into Pole

It’s Not Always Glamorous!

On February 3, 2017, Engine 2 and Truck 2 responded to the 700 block of Valley Road for an MVA with entrapment. Upon arrival, companies found a pickup on its driver side. When attempting to pass a turning car on the shoulder the vehicle struck a utility pole.

Firefighters were able to help the driver out of the windshield. He was checked over by Cedar Grove EMS and signed a refusal.

The Mays Landing Volunteer Fire Company along with the Township of Hamilton EMS and Police responded to River Road at the bulkhead on February 7, 2017 for a report of an MVA with rollover. Mays Landing Chief Lou DiMartine established command and reported the incident was a cleanup. Firefighters stood by until the vehicle was removed and then cleaned debris from the roadway.

Route 40 Head-on

Domestic Dispute MVA

On January 17, 2017, Mays Landing and Laureldale, along with the Hamilton Township EMS’ Rescue 18, and Hamilton Township Police responded to Harding Highway (U.S. Route 40) and Cantillion Boulevard for an MVA with entrapment. Mays Landing Chief Lou DiMartine arrived and established command for a crash that involved a passenger vehicle travelling west which had crossed the center line and struck a tractor-trailer head on. The crash trapped the driver’s lower extremities under the dashboard.

Rescuers performed a door pop then a dash roll.

On January 4, 2017, Richland and East Vineland fire companies responded to Lorraine Avenue and Railroad Boulevard for an MVA with entrapment. Richland Chief Anthony Monfredo established command, reported nothing showing at location and discovered the crash farther north on Lorraine Avenue about 200 feet off the road on the front lawn of a residence. The crash was the result of a domestic dispute with the car being struck on the driver’s side.

Fire companies had to use portable extrication devices to free the driver, who refused treatment.

Police, Civilian Vehicles in MVA On March 19, 2017, Clifton Engine 1, Ladder 3 and EMS-2 were dispatched to Main and Washington Avenues for an MVA in which a Clifton Police SUV t-boned a small SUV flipping it onto its side. Engine 1 applied a drying agent and a second ambulance was requested for multiple injuries.

Multiple Issues in Bargaintown MVA The Bargaintown Volunteer Fire Company was dispatched to Ridge Avenue and Leap Street on March 15, 2017, for an MVA with entrapment. Egg Harbor Township Police arrived to find a singlevehicle crash with the vehicle into a tree, branches atop the car, one occupant in the vehicle unconscious and a fire in the engine compartment.

Ocean City House Fire

On March 15, 2017, the Ocean City firefighters along with firefighters from Marmora in Upper Township, responded to Simpson Avenue in Ocean City for a structure fire. OCFD Engine 3 arrived to find heavy fire showing from a 1-1/2 story, wood frame, singlefamily dwelling. Firefighters pulled three lines, two onto the fire

and one onto an exposure. Once reinforcements arrived (Marmora, Engine 2, Truck 1, Heavy Rescue and ambulances) the fire was brought under control. The cause was under investigation by the OCFD. - Fire News photo by Carl Crossman

Call For A Demo The City of Somers Point Fire Department responded to the Boston Market Restaurant on New Road, on March 9, 2017, for a structure fire. Deputy Chief Jim Somers arrived to find smoke showing on the C side. Somers Point Engine 47 began attacking the fire, which was contained to the men’s room. Command requested a second alarm bringing Scullville, Bargintown (coverage) and City of Northfield FAST. Also responding were the New Jersey State Fire Marshall, and the Somers Point Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, who provided refreshments. The fire was caused by a cigarette discarded in a mulch bed causing the mulch to smolder and eventually burn through the exterior wall.

Three Times No Charm

Recycling Plant Fire

On March 10, 2017, the Passaic Fire Department responded to Aycrigg Avenue for a house fire. First arriving police reported heavy smoke showing from the residence. The building had sustained two previous fires and there were multiple holes in the floor from those fires. Companies were able to contain the fire within 20 minutes.

On March 10, 2017, the North Hudson Regional Fire Rescue responded to West Side Avenue for a structure fire on an evening with temperatures well below freezing. Companies arrived to find a large commercial recycling plant with heavy fire within. Multiple handlines were stretched and a tower ladder was set up for suppression. An excavator was used to help remove debris as firefighters worked to wet down the trash.

Portal Bridge Fire On February 23, 2017, Washingtonville firefighters responded to a fire on the Portal Bridge in Kearney, a railroad bridge over the Hackensack River.

The fire involved wood planking on the underside of the bridge that was being used as a scaffold to catch falling debris during engineering work.

Good Stop in Egg Harbor City The Egg Harbor City and the South Egg Harbor Volunteer Fire Company responded to White Horse Pike early on March 19, 2017, for a structure fire.

Egg Harbor City Chief ‘Butch’ Kienzle established command at a two-story wood frame structure with heavy fire showing from the A-side second floor.

Egg Harbor City Engine 10-1 stretched two lines into a door on the D side up to the second floor. Egg Harbor City Ladder 10 arrived and put its main in place for firefighters to access the roof.

South Egg Harbor firefighters assisted Egg Harbor City in making a good stop.

On March 10, 2017, the volunteer fire companies of Farmington and Cardiff responded to Fisler Avenue for a structure fire. Exposures Saved in Paterson On February 10, 2017, the Paterson Fire Department responded to Pearl Street for a fire.

Companies arrived to find heavy fire showing from division 2 of a two-story residence with exposures B and D in extreme danger. Companies made an aggressive interior attack as a second alarm was struck to help prevent the exposures from going.

Companies had the heavy fire knocked down within 15 minutes and were on scene for another hour conducting over haul and wrapping up operations.

Mount Holly House Fire On March 5, 2017, firefighters from the Mount Holly Fire Department and surrounding communities were dispatched to Randall Avenue for a dwelling fire. Command arrived to find the rear of a single-story, wood frame, single-family dwelling well involved and spreading into the interior. The first-due engine laid in with an LDH and stretched two lines into the interior. The fire was brought under control within 30 minutes.

By Ray Cooney Anti-Oxidizing Chocolate Balls While filming an episode of Firehouse Kitchen, I was visited by a very special person - Ann DeGregoria. Ann is a holistic-nutritional therapist. She said she had some delicious holistic recipes that could help firefighters. The one that came to mind was anti-oxidizing chocolate balls. These chocolate balls help with joint inflammation and blood circulation.

I set up the shoot. Firehouse Kitchen is going holistic!

The whole crew looked up as Ann entered the set. She’s a very attractive woman, in her early 40s. She is outspoken and has a smile that lights up a room. When the show started, I said, “OK, let’s get cooking.” Ann replied, “There is no cooking. Not every delicious treat has to be baked or fried.”

We mixed the ingredients together, from cocoa powder to butter, and a whole lot of other ingredients that I didn’t think would be in the dessert. Have you ever heard of rice syrup?

Ann was unbelievable at giving examples of how these ingredients can help with ailments.

Ann explained how tart cherries helped her with psoriasis and joint pain. After the mixing was done, we made this brown - I wanna’ say slop - into little balls. We put them on a tray, sprinkled them with coconut and put them in the fridge for an hour to an hour and a half.

OK, now it’s time to taste. Ann asked me if would I say something if I didn’t like them.

I told her of course I would! That would be great television! Fortunately for Ann, they were delicious.

Anti-Oxidizing Chocolate Balls 1/2 cup of organic cocoa powder 1/2 stick of organic butter 1 Banana blended 1 cup organic peanut butter 1/2 cup tart cherries blended 1/3 cup walnuts grounded 1/3 cup coconut chopped 1/3 cup organic oatmeal 1/3 cup rice syrup 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Mix all ingredients in a big bowl. Shamong Chimney Fire On March 22, 2017, District 28 units were alerted for a chimney fire. Chief 2800 arrived to find nothing showing, but then reported fire had breached the box around the chimney. Engine Company 2812 stretched a line and Quint 4314 from Tabernacle opened up the chimney.

DAVID RUSSELL ELECTED TO FEMSA BOARD

David Russell, of Fire & Safety Services, Ltd., was elected to the Board of Trustees of FEMSA in late September at their annual meeting in Nashville Tennessee. His term of office began on January 1, 2017, and runs for three years. David was appointed as the head of the membership committee as part of his Board duties.

David is the Principal and President of Fire & Safety Services, Ltd., of South Plainfield, New Jersey. He has worked for Fire & Safety Services off and on since his father, William, bought the business from its founder, Walter Runyon in 1982. After college, David joined the Metuchen Volunteer Fire Department in his hometown and was an active member there for 12 years, rising to the position of Lieutenant. In 1999, David decided to leave his career as a litigation attorney and return to the business and officially took over principal ownership and the Presidency of the company in 2006. In his free

time, David enjoys spending time with his wife and daughter, and watching his daughter excel as a middle school distance runner. David also finds relaxation by throwing his body around as a goalkeeper in a competitive Over-40 soccer league near his home.

FIREFIGHTER THROWDOWN

April 28-29, 2017 at Lucas Oil Stadium, Indianapolis On Friday, April 28 and Saturday, April 29, 2017, the Firefighter Throwdown will be held at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana. The event will be held from 1000 to 1700 on Friday and 1000 to 1230 on Saturday.

The goal of firefighter fitness is to increase the chances of everyone returning home safely. Plus, being in shape helps to assure no one is a liability to their fellow brother or sister on the job. This is a two-day functional fitness event that is employing a three-memberteam format (minimum one-woman per team).

The Firefighter Throwdown was created to address health, wellness, nutrition and exercise, as it relates to firefighter safety, job performance and quality of life. With 50 percent of all firefighter LODDs directly related to heart attacks, the fire industry is in a state of emergency. The most tangible and immediate way to address, prevent and correct this situation is through bettering the state of individual firefighters’ health starting with nutrition and exercise. This event concept showcases elite firefighter athletes from around the country, and internationally, who prove by example, that fitness is intrinsic to a firefighter’s survival.

Operations will be managed for a second time by CrossFit North Atlanta, and judges/volunteers and a local presence has been secured by partnering with CrossFit NapTown, Indianapolis. Athletes are chosen to compete from all those who apply online at www.firefighterthrowdownusa.com.

Cardiff Stove Fire Snuffed On March 9, 2017, the volunteer fire companies of Cardiff and Bargaintown responded to 4th Avenue in the Cardiff section for a stove fire. Cardiff Chief Steven Sear arrived and had first responding Cardiff Engine 1516’s crew take a preconnect straight in the front door and quickly extinguish the fire.

Bargaintown firefighters, under the direction of Chief Gene Sharpe, forced open the rear door once the main body of fire was knocked down to help ventilate.

Laureldale Truck/House Fire On March 9, 2017, the volunteer fire companies of Laureldale, Cologne and Mays Landing responded to Route 50 and Birch Street for a vehicle fire next to a structure. Laureldale Chief Chris Tilley arrived to find fire on parts of the C/D side of the structure. Several units from the New Jersey Forest Fire Service were nearby and responded to assist and aided in moving the vehicle away from the structure while crews from Laureldale Engine 1833 extinguished the fire. Also responding were Hamilton Township EMS, Police, and Fire Investigator.

On December 23, 2016, the Clifton Fire Department responded to Knapp Avenue for an attic fire. EMS-2 was the first arriving unit and advised companies of heavy smoke in the area and a working attic fire. Multiple lines were stretched into the large 2-1/2 story home. A second alarm was struck to cover the city’s firehouses.

On January 2, 2017, the Irvington Fire Department responded to Linden Avenue for a structure fire. Companies were able to get a handle on the fire quickly. The fire had started in the basement with extension to divisions 1 and 2.

Paterson Basement Fire Extends

On January 5, 2016, the Cedar Grove Fire Department responded to Woodmere Road for a reported house fire. Companies arrived to heavy fire in the basement, which companies soon found was partially gas fed, hampering suppression efforts. Mutual aid came from Verona, Montclair, North Caldwell, Caldwell, Bloomfield Rescue, and the Bell and Siren Club responded to assist in below freezing temperatures.

On January 23, 2017, the Paterson Fire Department Tour 2 responded to a working fire on Dixon Avenue. Heavy fire was found in the basement of a 2-1/2 story frame dwelling with extension to the first and second floors. A very aggressive interior attack had the fire knocked down in 20 minutes and under control in about an hour. One firefighter suffered non-life threatening injuries.

Tough Job on Tuckahoe Road

On January 24, 2017, as companies were returning from a previous alarm just before noon, the Elmwood Park Fire Department was dispatched for a report of an apartment fire on Boulevard. As units arrived, heavy smoke was showing from the two-story garden apartment building and a working fire was found in a second floor apartment. Several lines were stretched and put into operation, the roof was opened up and companies reported extension into the attic. Quick work had the fire knocked down and under control in about 30 minutes. Mutual aid came from Garfield, Fair Lawn and Saddle Brook.

On February 5, 2017, the volunteer fire companies of Richland (Station 12-1), East Vineland (Station 12-2) and Squad 12-9 (Buena Vista EMS) responded to Tuckahoe Road for a dwelling fire.

Richland Chief Anthony Monfredo arrived and reported heavy smoke and fire showing and requested a ladder and tanker from Landisville and a water tender from the Mizpah. He then requested a second alarm bringing additional water tenders from the Dorothy, Newtonville and Collings Lakes; Forest Grove and Estell Manor covered. The fire was brought under control within an hour.

Atlantic Highlands Teaches CPR

Recently, the Atlantic Highlands First Aid and Safety Squad trainers, who are also American Heart Association-certified CPR instructors taught 14 people CPR skills. The community CPR class developed through a conversation between AHFAS Captain Tom Hayden and resident Colette Umar, who asked about being trained as part of her studies as a preschool teacher. “The idea for the class was Colette’s and it mushroomed into something quite nice,” said Hayden. “This was a great way for us to connect with the community we serve, while also building the number of people who can provide CPR in times of emergency. Polar Bear Plunge in Denville On February 25, 2017, the Denville Fire Department Water Rescue Team provided water safety assistance for a Polar Bear Plunge fundraiser, which was raising funds for a new playground at Gardner Field.

Air temperatures were in the low 70s and water temperature in the upper 40s. Forty-six participants took the plunge and raised about $11,000 for the playground.

Hamilton, Richland SAR Training On February 23, 2017, the Hamilton Township Dive Team and Richland Volunteer Fire Company of Atlantic County participated in a joint dive team exercise at Lake Lenape in Hamilton Township under the direction of Chief Glenn Hausman. Harold ‘Whitey’ Swartz Funeral

Retired Atlantic County Fire Marshall Harold ‘Whitey’ Swartz was laid to rest on a bitterly cold March 11, 2017, morning with full honors. His casket was placed onto his 1938 Brockway by family, friends, and fellow firefighters who braved the bitter cold to come pay their last respects. The Brockway motored along several roads in Galloway Township passing the Bayview Volunteer Fire Company’s 6th Avenue station where dozens of uniformed firefighters, EMS, police and civilians stood at attention. It then passed by his Firefighters Museum of Southern New Jersey where current Atlantic County Fire Marshall David Buzby and Park Ranger Bill Wilkinson stood at attention with Whitey’s gear on display. The motorcade finally came to St. Mark’s All Saints Church, passing under a flag draped by the City of Pleasantville Fire Department’s Ladder 1 and Bayview Tower 49. Reverend Tom Sweeny, the Chaplain for the Atlantic County Firefighters Association, blessed the casket while it was carried inside by the pallbearers while other uniformed firefighters stood at attention.
